The departures board carried on ticking over as Winter patiently waited for her train out of Mystic Falls to… wait where the fuck was she going? She must have been waiting for a train back to Seattle, but she couldn’t quite figure out why she was heading to Seattle. Oh yeah, probably to see Jeremiah since it had been a hot second since they’d met up. She still needed to tell him about Elias, but couldn’t find the right words. Perhaps their conversation would go along the lines of ‘I met your twin brother. He's an asshole, like a major asshole. Anyway how’ve you been?— she risked upsetting Jeremiah, considering Elias was hand delivered to a rich family whereas Jeremiah wasn’t. At least Jeremiah had managed to keep himself alive all this time. One point to Jeremiah, nil to Elias. Winter hadn’t paid attention to any of the people around her since she arrived, she resembled a zombie like the rest of them. Eyes glued to the board until an announcement was made that a train was pulling in, then she hauled herself to her feet like the rest of them, but never actually got on her train? It must have been delayed. She didn’t even notice Penny had sat down next to her and only drew her attention to her after Penny had screamed Winter’s name in her ear. “Oh hey. Where’re you heading?” Why the fuck was Penny using public transport? She could just flap her wings and be at her destination in no time. It was a shame Elias was such an asshole otherwise they could have had a little sibling meet up. He wasn’t even a little bit of an asshole either because that she could deal with, afterall she’d been dealing with Lex for so, but no Elias took the crown. Winter couldn’t stand him and he was just stored away in her mind next to the other shitty family members who brought nothing to her life. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ OF COURSE THEY GOT TAKEN BY THE GHOST RIDERS. Fuck. Penny couldn’t fucking believe this. One minute, they were at the museum, and the next, they were in this fucking train station, all because of those fucking zombie cowboys.
She’d heard of this before. You didn’t get to be around for five hundred years and not hear of the ghost riders━of people being taken, all trace of them erased, and how only a few lucky ones were remembered. Unfortunately, Penny was screwed, because Winter was here with her, and nobody else would remember her. Maybe Cassandra. Lawrence would be happy to get rid of her. That was it. Penny was never getting out of here.
Once upon a time, she would’ve had a little more hope. Back when she had Alice, or Edmond━people who loved her. Maybe even one of her husbands. Now, though, she came-to in the dreary train station almost immediately, and frowned at the slack-faced people around her. How long would she have to stay here? Forever? That was a long fucking time.
A few people flitted around, clearly conscious of what was happening, and Penny turned to see Winter sitting beside her, still completely out of it. She nudged Winter, asking, “Hey, you awake yet?” And received no response. She pushed her a little harder, then again, growing louder until she leaned in and screamed in Winter’s ear.
It felt like she’d been screaming forever before Winter finally looked at her, seemingly lucid now, though she asked the dumbest question imaginable. Penny scoffed and shook her head, motioning to their surroundings. “Look around you. Does anyone else look like they’re in a fucking hurry?” She snapped, “This isn’t a real train station. Do you remember how we got here?” The faster Winter figured it out, the less annoyed Penny would be.

Winter had grown accustomed to Penny by now. A little grouchy and not to be fucked with, but Winter assumed that came with age. Imagine being alive for centuries and having to deal with people’s bullshit over and over again. Winter was still in her twenties and she was already done with it. Some of the people they had walking into the museum were fucking idiots. Needless to say, Winter wasn’t taken back when Penny snapped at her because she snapped at most people. She didn’t jump to answer the question either, taking a second to think about it. Of course no one was in a hurry. There wasn’t a train due yet, so they were left waiting for the next one. Just like Winter was waiting for her train to Seattle, except Seattle wasn’t written on the departure board. She’d never paid much attention to the board until now. It was full of place’s she had never heard of before. She frowned a little as Penny asked her how they got to the train station. “I—” They walked there? Got an Uber there? Wait. Winter never used public transport. If she needed to go to Seattle she would drive. Plus there wasn’t even a train that would take her from Mystic Falls all the way to her home city. “Give me a minute.” She muttered as she placed her hands into her hands, trying to piece it together. She couldn’t remember making any plans to go and see Jeremiah and that was the only reason she’d head back home. “We were outside the museum… we were going home and it was raining.” She pulled her head out of her hands, looking at Penny, “Those assholes shot us… where the fuck are we?” Reality washed over her as she realised they were sitting in some fake train station with a bunch of strangers. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ EVENTUALLY, PENNY WAS ABLE TO GET through to Winter, to see the recognition begin to flutter over her features. It took her a moment longer as she thought of where they were and how they got there, and then, finally, her head rose from her hands, and Winter looked like she was back in the land of the living. That, of course, ended up creating slight panic━or, at the very least, discomfort.
“Right.” Penny muttered in a monotone voice, as though she was bored of this already━irritated by Winter’s inability to “get there” as quick as Penny wanted. After another second, she was finally asking the right questions.
“I don’t know if it has a specific name,” She sighed, “But think of it like purgatory…” As if that was at all helpful, “… No way in other than those guys, no way out━you just sit. And wait. For nothing.” The edges of Penny’s lips pulled downwards into a heavy frown, her eyes falling to her hands in her lap. This was it. “They shoot us, and we come here. Then everyone back there forgets about us.” She didn’t want to give Winter any false hope, but she was ten times more likely to be remembered than Penny. Still, it wasn’t simple, nor was it promised. They could both be stuck here forever.
“You get to go back if they remember you. It’s not an exact science, but your shit gets left behind. The people in your life have to try really hard to get those memories back, though.” And she couldn’t see Lawrence putting any effort into her. “Do you have anyone who you think will remember you?” Penny asked, a dry, humourless smile on her lips, “Because if you’re here with me, then I’m fucked.” Normally, she wouldn’t share anything about herself, or start a little pity party, but what did it fucking matter? She was never leaving this place.

Okay that was a lot for Winter to digest considering she’d just snapped out of some zombie state. She let out a nervous laugh, trying desperately to search for some humour in Penny’s voice, but there was nothing. No trace of sarcasm like usual. This was serious. “But… we can’t just sit here forever. Like… we can’t.” Forever was a fucking long time and Winter couldn’t sit in a cold dark train station all that time. She was to go back into her zombie state where she was living blissfully unaware of the truth. Panic started to set in for Winter, but she kept her cool for now as she looked up at the four walls which surrounded them. It sparked memories of when her dad would try and lock her in her bedroom if he was throwing some kind of party. Sometimes people would freak out if there was a child there. The idiot would always forget the door could be unlocked from the inside too. She’d wait an hour before making her way downstairs to make herself dinner. By that time her dad was too twisted to know she was there. “Um…” Lex was the first name that came to her. The pair had been living together for a year now but would he try really hard to remember her? Then there was Jeremiah, but she had seen him in so long that memories of her were wiped with ease. Plus there was absolutely nothing she would have left behind with him. Finally there was Elias. Ha! He was trying really hard to forget she existed. “Let me think… I’m an orphan with one friend who can’t remember to put the fucking toilet seat down, no boyfriend and two half brothers that are barely in my life… so yeah I’m fucked.” She slouched down into the chair in a huff, folding her arms as she did so. “You’re telling me I’m the only person in Mystic Falls who might remember you?” Penny was like a million years old. There had to be someone out there who cared about her. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ WINTER COULD TRY TELLING THAT TO THE WILD HUNT assholes. Penny would love to see that shit. She scoffed quietly at Winter’s reaction, though she knew it wasn’t fair to make fun of her like that. This was… fucking terrible, and they were screwed. They’d be stuck here for… forever.
Or at least Penny would.
Maybe Winter would be as bad off as Penny was, though. But she had at least one friend, her roommate━he’d be more likely to remember Winter with all of her stuff left at their place. Penny lived alone. But still, they were both fucked, and that was enough to have Penny softening a bit. Neither of them would make it out of here.
“Pretty much.” She muttered, then quietly added, “I was seeing this guy… not really seeing, I guess. We slept together whenever we ran into each other, but I doubt he’d remember me.” And who knew where the fuck her sister was. “Not that I’m not memorable.” One edge of Penny’s lips lifted in a small smirk. She rocked that little vamp’s world. “But… he’s an idiot. No hope for me there.” Penny scoffed despite the reality of her situation. Of their situation.
Penny glanced over at Winter, a little grin on her lips, just a ghost of meanness to it. “Isn’t that friend kind of your boyfriend, though?” She raised a brow, “I’ve never platonically shared a home with a man.” Nor had she a woman, but… that wasn’t the point. But Penny was from a different time, so who really knew what kids found appropriate nowadays. They talked about “catching feelings” as if it was a virus, which was another thing she just couldn’t understand.

While Winter was relistent and tough, dealing with everything life had thrown at her so far, being trapped in a train station forever could break her. She wasn’t a social butterfly, one who craved human interaction, but to be trapped in a world away from reality was daunting. She’d always been optimistic in life however it was difficult to be positive about something like this. Were either of them memorable? Winter didn’t visit the bars or the club frequently to have her face recognised. The museum mainly attracted tourists. She occasionally went to the Grill. She hadn’t gone out of her way to make friends in Mystic Falls, choosing to gravitate toward Lex instead. “You never know. He might surprise you.” Partly telling herself that about Lex. Maybe there was a crumb of common sense inside that boy. Winter scoffed, shaking her head, “Fuck no. We met at a fair last year and I agreed to drive him to Mystic Falls. He pays for the hotel room. Twin beds… we’re just friends though.” She never even looked at Lex in that way. “Anyway. He’s an idiot too.” She commented with a smile on her face. “So we gotta wait here until our idiot men save us.” Winter leaned back into the seat, folding her arms as she did so. The waiting game began. PENNY BARTLETT - end!
