If only it were so easy to make certain they would never again lose the ones they loved. All the good intentions and meticulously laid plans were no match for fate. In fact Elijah had long believed that the old adage was right. The road to hell was indeed paved with good intentions and almost every Mikaelson was well on their way there. Niklaus had only the best of intentions in mind when he had taken Henrik to see the wolves that night, his mother likely only had the best intentions when she had given in to her grief and had ensured her children would never die, he had only the best intentions when he had chased Tatia on the morning she had found he and Niklaus covered in blood. They had excuses for each crime, perfectly valid ones, but fate had cast a dark pall on their actions. Elijah had now that they could have a moment in the light before that same dark pall was cast back over them. Both Henrik and Tatia deserved more than another heavy-handed swipe from fate. His brother deserved the chance to keep his promise, to get to know the family he had been cruelly taken from too soon. If there was anything on heaven or earth he could do to make certain his brother could do that, Elijah knew he would make it happen. The same with Tatia. He’d had his life, had lived a hundred lifetimes that should not have been his by right, surely fate would allow them to now live theirs in peace for a time. Just a little benevolence, that would be all that it would take and then he could go to his own fate with a lighter heart, knowing that they hadn’t suffered for merely being close to those whose lives had been cursed.
The corners of Elijah’s mouth lifted into a faint smile at his brother’s words. His own promise could’ve been echoed in return but he knew that if things continued the way they were then they might again be separated for a time. Niklaus would see everything he was doing to prevent this ritual as a betrayal. ”I have no plans to leave either. There are too many people in this town who are important to me right now to even consider leaving.” He had too many to protect, that was the truth of the matter. With his eyes open now Elijah could see it all coming. They were no longer blind to all that was weird, wonderful and terrifying around them, he and his siblings were at the very heart of it. Esther had guaranteed it, making them a part of the supernatural world after years of shielding them from it. ”Some of the truth at least,” Elijah said darkly. There were always surprises, always new threats coming to light. If Niklaus succeeded in his ritual he would become something the world had never seen before, embodying the powers of both a werewolf and a vampire. The possibility left him feeling as though ice were sliding down his spine. Elijah had pushed himself to his feet to escape the thoughts running through his head, returning to the bottle to pour himself another glass of liquor. His expression was faintly curious as he studied his brother, concern growing at the edges. ”I know I will not be able to change your mind but I can’t let you go on a fools errand either brother. I don’t wish to see father look at you the same way he does the rest of us, don’t wish to see him attempt to slaughter you in the way he has us. You don’t deserve that life Henrik.” None of them had deserved the lives they had been cursed with but most of all Henrik and Tatia should have had so much more.

When Crowley had revealed that Mystic Falls was the destination for his next mission, Henrik couldn’t deny that he had been a little sceptical. He had heard rumours about the town beforehand and he knew that it was a place where a lot of members of the supernatural world were trying to put down roots but when it came to carrying out different tasks for Crowley there was usually a lot more to it than trying to recruit people to the demon’s cause. True to form Crowley hadn’t been completely honest with him, the guy had had secrets just like always but now Henrik knew exactly who he had been sent to Mystic Falls to recruit – his siblings. It could be no coincidence that one of the first people he should bump into while he was in town was Elijah, Crowley had kept the fact that they were alive from him for the last eight years probably certain, and rightly so, that had Henrik found out the truth earlier then he would have sought them out before. He had always known that he hadn’t wanted to do the demon’s bidding forever, he wanted to start living his own life rather than having to constantly do things for someone else and now he hoped that he just might have the chance to do so. The first time around his life had been taken from him far too soon and he had spent the last eight years doing as Crowley had asked so Henrik knew that this was his time to start living his life the way he wanted to and knowing that his siblings were still alive was giving him the courage to do just that. He knew that he couldn’t turn his back on the King of Hell completely, at least not yet, so he would at least try and recruit some people to Crowley’s cause while he was in town but he knew that he wasn’t going to let it take up all of his time the way he once might have done. What might have only been intended to be a fleeting visit to the town had already turned into a much longer stop and Henrik knew that he wasn’t going to be going anywhere anytime soon, at least not as long as his family were in town. While it was true that Elijah was the only one that he had seen so far and the others were still daggered he knew that he wasn’t in a hurry to strike out on his own again so he was more than happy to stick around and get to know the person that his brother had become. As Elijah spoke, a smile touched Henrik’s lips. “Now I know you can’t just be talking about me. Who else is in town that you want to stay close to?” he asked, genuinely curious as to who his brother had in his life even though Henrik wouldn’t have met any of them yet. He knew that Elijah had been through a lot so if nothing else he at least hoped that his brother had been able to find happiness with someone. Elijah’s comment that they knew some of the truth was enough to pique Henrik’s interest but for now he decided not to question it. He knew quite a bit about the supernatural world now but he hadn’t known that his siblings were still alive so if nothing else he knew that Elijah had a point and he had a feeling that it would only be a matter of time before more came to light too. As Elijah spoke again, a laugh escaped Henrik’s lips. “I would like to see him try,” he chuckled, lifting his right hand and snapping his fingers which caused a small ball of fire to dance above it. “I’m not the same person I used to be either, Elijah, and I’m not new to magic. I can protect both of us from father if he finds us, you don’t need to worry about that,” he assured his brother. He wasn’t the same defenceless child he had been when he had died, his time with Crowley had helped him grow stronger than he ever could have done on his own and it had made him into someone who could protect himself and the people he cared about so even if their father wouldn’t listen to reason he had plenty of spells up his sleeve to stop him in his tracks. Catching sight of the darkening sky outside the window, Henrik glanced back at his brother. “It looks like it is getting late. If you’re sure you are fine with me moving in would you come with me to the motel and help me grab my things?” The truth was that he didn’t have much, in fact he had more grimoires with him than anything, but he knew that it would be much quicker to pack up his belongings with his brother by his side. The last time he had seen Henrik, his brother had been so painfully young. After Niklaus had bought his body back to the village Elijah had searched his mind for every detail of the last words he had spoken to him, the last afternoon they had spent together in the woods, charging amongst the trees, playing acting in a way their father had never been able to understand. They had been close but Henrik had not yet grown enough to hear of the more serious side of his siblings’ lives. He had not confessed more than an affection for Tatia, knowing that at 13 his brother’s interests had likely not yet swayed to girls or thoughts of marriage. Henrik had been cut down before any of that could really have been a consideration, going to his grave little more than a child. That was what had made the loss even more tragic, his brother hadn’t been allowed a life, hadn’t been allowed to finally reach manhood. The man before him, and this Henrik was certainly that, had finally been given that opportunity, but at a cost Elijah could not yet fathom. A King of Hell had brought his brother back for unknown reasons. It was rude to look that particular gift horse in the mouth but after a thousand years Elijah could no longer bring himself to trust something blindly. To do so was to court danger and when it came to being able to keep both Tatia and Henrik in his life, Elijah knew that he could no longer be blind to what could possibly happen. Both of them had been lost once, getting them back now, he knew that he could ill afford to lose them again.
The words out of Henrik’s mouth, the smile on his lips, could once have graced any of his brothers’ faces. Kol and Niklaus had certainly been of an age where girls had started to catch their eye, both his and Niklaus’ finding the same girl’s before she had been taken from them. Elijah’s smile curved further as a faint trace of bashfulness had him dipping his head slightly. ”Not just you, brother, no,” he confirmed, not wanting to hide anything from him. ”There is a girl here to be shielded and another … was brought back here. After we lost you others were lost in the village, including Tatia. On my way into town I discovered her alongside the road. We are still unsure how she came to be here but as she is, I will not leave here without her.” He had been the one to kill the girl he had loved once, Elijah was determined not to allow it to happen again, at anybody’s hands. The threat was there from Niklaus and always there from his father. He knew that it was only a matter of time before Mikael stumbled upon them again. Elijah hadn’t been able to stop himself from warning his brother, or to stop his brows from rising again now as Henrik snapped his fingers and demonstrated magic that came to him as easily as to their mother. ”Same person or not, there is still a danger brother. We spent a thousand years trying to find a way to escape, to protect ourselves from him. Just … be cautious.” Eljiah’s gaze remained on the flame until it was extinguished, his brow lined until Henrik drew his attention to the hour. Twisting his wrist, Elijah checked the watch upon it and nodded. ”It appears as though the afternoon has gotten away from us. I’m quite certain,” he promised, reaching out to lay a hand on his brother’s shoulder. ”Let us go, see if we can get you settled here tonight. Tomorrow we can start to discuss a way to convince Niklaus to free our siblings from their confinement.” That way was likely to involve violence, as it always seemed to where Niklaus was concerned.
