Everything had seemed so much simpler to Henrik before he died. Back then he really hadn’t had a care in the world other than to make sure he stayed out of the way of his father when he was in a bad mood and to stay safe each month during the night of the full moon. Now everything was so much more complicated, a thousand years had passed since he died and he had no idea what his siblings had been through during that time. He honestly hoped that Elijah would fill him in but given how protective he had always been a part of Henrik was concerned that Elijah would try and shield him from what they had been through. He already got the impression that it wasn’t good but despite the fact that his siblings were all older than he was and had no doubt seen a lot more of the world than he could ever dream of he wasn’t a child any longer and he knew that he wasn’t going to let them keep things from him. When he was a child he had appreciated the way they had tried to look out for him and he couldn’t deny that he had missed having people around him who cared but now he hoped that he could look out for them in return. “We will see,” Henrik nodded. He wasn’t sure he believed Elijah but he still hoped that in time he would find a way to let go of the guilt that he felt. Being around Elijah now was enough to make him hope that he and his siblings would get the chance to be a family once more but even as Elijah spoke of Niklaus Henrik could tell that there was something that his brother wasn’t telling him. “How was he after that night?” Henrik asked, doing his best to keep his voice even. It was still a difficult subject to talk about or even think about but he knew that he needed to know the answer. He had convinced Niklaus to go with him that night to watch the wolves turn and while he didn’t remember much after seeing the look in the wolf’s eyes just before it attacked he could only imagine how difficult it must have been for his brother. “I think you might be right,” Henrik nodded. He wanted to know what his siblings had been up to in the years that had followed his death but he also knew that Elijah would have questions about how he was back and Henrik knew that he was going to have to do his best to answer them. As they reached the apartment block and Elijah made his offer Henrik couldn’t deny that he was surprised. “I couldn’t ask you to do that brother, I wouldn’t want to impose,” Henrik said honestly. The truth was that he wanted nothing more than to be around his family once again but he knew that the last thing he wanted was for Elijah to feel obligated to make such an offer. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

There were few occasions these days when Elijah allowed himself to discuss the changes his brother had gone through in the last thousand years. He could be quick enough to point the finger of blame at his parents, to blame them for all that had happened after the night Henrik had died, but time and time again he had made excuses for Niklaus. Their father had twisted him, the man he could be still lurked beneath that bitter, angry surface. Elijah wasn’t so sure if that was still the truth though. A thousand years of desperation had done damage to his brother, had slowly eroded that man away until he wasn’t so sure their younger brother would even be able to see it in Niklaus when they were reunited. Then again, Elijah thought, glancing down at his own hands, where he could readily imagine Tatia’s blood as it had been on them at night, was Henrik able to see the earnest young man he had once been in him. Likely not, although he had led himself to believe that he had clung on to more humanity than his siblings. He could quite easily have been deluding himself, just as he had over the identity of Tatia’s murderer for centuries. Perhaps in preventing Niklaus from slaughtering those in this town whose blood would release the bonds holding back his wolf side, he would find some redemption for himself. It might end in centuries in a coffin for himself but it would be a price would paying to see Tatia be able to live her life free and safe. He would not let what happened to Katerina happen to either Elena or Tatia.
Perhaps with Henrik by his side he would achieve it, although even if he did his younger brother might still be weighed down with the guilt he himself had carried for centuries. Elijah nodded shortly at Henrik’s words, not wanting to push things further when his brother was likely not ready to let go of that burden. Slipping his hands into the pockets of his jacket, Elijah let out a long breath at Henrik’s question. ”I won’t lie to you, none of us were the same after that night and I don’t only mean physically. Esther may have changed what we were but who we were, that was never the same either.” He couldn’t lay the blame for that at his brother’s feet, it had been their father, the hunger, the thousand years of the vow weighing upon them. A corner of Elijah’s mouth twitched faintly as he thought of what Niklaus had kept with him. ”He still has the soul of an artist in a way, even if sometimes it is buried beneath his temper.” Some had called Niklaus monstrous over the years, others a lunatic. Most thought him irredeemable but when he saw Niklaus in front of a canvas, when his brother genuinely smiled, that hope was rekindled. There was a chance Henrik would believe that the Niklaus he had known was gone when his brother arrived in town to enact his ritual. Niklaus would have a chance to tell his side of it then, albeit a heavily biased one most likely. ”I will tell what I can of what has happened but Niklaus, Rebekah, Kol, they will have their own side of things.” Their own way of dealing with this. His own way was to want to keep his brother close, not to trust that all of this wouldn’t be snatched away again. Elijah kept the keys in his hands as he walked up the four flights of stairs to the top floor, one that gave a view over the town square. He shook his head at Henrik’s words as he opened the door to his apartment. ”It is far from an imposition. I’d be honoured to have you here. The lodgings aren’t exactly palatial but there is space enough for you to call your own…” Elijah stepped inside, holding the door for his brother. Dark eyes swept the room around him, with its almost industrial lines and furniture more modern than his tastes would usually go for.

Henrik hadn’t known what he would find when he arrived in Mystic Falls, usually Crowley went into detail about missions he wanted completed but this time he had been surprisingly cryptic. Deep down Henrik knew that he shouldn’t be surprised after all the King of Hell had hidden the fact that his siblings were still alive from him for the last eight years but he had honestly thought that after everything he had done the guy might have started trusting him. As it turned out he was wrong and a part of him knew that there was never going to be that level of trust there between them. He still felt loyal to Crowley considering the guy had been the one to bring him back to life but at the end of the day Henrik knew that he was his own person and he was ready to start living his own life away from Crowley’s influence. There was a time when he knew that he had needed Crowley, when he was brought back to life he was nothing more than a child but now Henrik knew a lot more about the world he had been brought back in, about what was really out there, and a lot more about himself. He had spent the last few years studying magic as much as he could to strengthen his powers and some of the things he had achieved over the last year or so were things that he knew shouldn’t have been possible so he knew that he was ready to break away and finally start living his own life. A big part of that, naturally, was going to mean reconnecting with his family. Given how long it had been since he had last seen any of them and given how much he had changed he didn’t doubt that it was going to take a while to convince them that he was who he said he was but he had managed it with Elijah and he could only hope that he would be able to do the same with his other siblings as well. For the last eight years he had been searching for a place where he belonged and now being back with his brother once more he was starting to feel like perhaps he had finally found just that. “Elijah, I’m sorry,” Henrik said sincerely. “I never wanted anything to happen to you because of me.” He knew that he would never be able to change what had happened or make it any better for his siblings but at the very least he hoped that he might be able to bring the family back together once more. Whatever had happened to them since his death was very much on him no matter what his brother said and Henrik knew that he was going to have to find a way to live with that. Truth be told he wouldn’t have blamed Elijah for turning him away after everything that had happened but he had always been the one in the family who was the most willing to forgive and that at least didn’t seem to have changed. It had been an innocent request made by a young boy at the time, a request to see the wolves turn just once, and it had cost him his life but the consequences for his family had been much more severe. “I always enjoyed watching Nik while he worked,” Henrik admitted, a ghost of a smile touching his lips as he looked over at his brother. Being the youngest meant that he had always looked up to his older siblings and he had found things in common with each of them over the years. As Elijah spoke once more, Henrik nodded. “Please tell me what you can, I need to know,” he said gently. He had been sent to Mystic Falls for a reason, to recruit his siblings to Crowley’s side in the coming way, but he had a feeling there was more to it than that so he knew that he needed to be prepared. Looking around the room he found himself in Henrik felt his smile return. “Trust me, this is a lot better than I’m used to,” he admitted. “Thank you, I would love to stay here with you.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Repeatedly over the centuries Elijah had found himself promising that he would do anything for his family, anything to keep their vow intact. He had lied, tortured, killed and sacrificed his own heart and happiness to protect his siblings. He had helped to dagger Kol, had stayed Rebekah’s hand when she had been prepared to kill their father. Had he not done that last perhaps they would never have reached the point where their mother had felt it necessary to turn her own children into monsters to protect them. With Mikael dead they might not have stayed in the village, might not have been there for Henrik to beg Niklaus to take him out into the woods to see the werewolves change. At every step in their long, long lives there had been a decision to make, a fork that fate could have placed in the road. Blindly they had charged down each, although undoubtedly Niklaus would have argued against the idea. Fate had steered them, had plucked at their hearts, at their flesh, had whispered in their ear to coax them from one curve of the road to the next. There had been no real choice on their part, no ability to steer their own path, the return of first Tatia and Henrik was proof of that. Given the inability to steer, to determine their own fate, was there truly any way he could prevent the loss of Tatia once more? Elijah wasn’t sure, couldn’t be sure, he thought, until Niklaus’ plan played out and yet again his family was left standing amongst the ruins.
Elijah’s hands tightened into fists in his pockets as his youngest brother again apologised. Even if the heavy hand of fate had not been to blame for the tragic turn the Mikaelsons’ lives had taken, he would not have allowed a child, as Henrik had been on then, to blame himself for something that had not been his fault. His jaw flexed in time with his hands as he shook his head. ”I don’t believe what happened was because of you, not solely because of you,” he promised his brother. ”Our parents were damaged by grief long before you were even born. The loss of you was merely one more weight upon their shoulders.” The proverbial straw to break the camel’s back, or rather to break their sanity. Esther had grown desperate enough to violate nature, Mikael angry enough to chase his children across continents, across centuries. Mikael had been angry long before Henrik had been lost, whether through grief or through frustration at his wife’s indiscretion, Elijah had never been sure. He had taken his temper out on the son that had not biologically been his, belittling a child who had not been to blame for his mother’s mistakes, trying to drive out of him what had made Niklaus a delicate, sweet boy.
The only way he could see that boy now was when his brother’s hands were bathed in something other than blood. ”He always enjoyed creating things for you all, always enjoyed seeing you smile.” It had been a long time since his siblings’ happiness had been any concern of Niklaus’. If it had been he would have bitten his temper back, would have allowed Rebekah to truly lose her heart to Marcel, he wouldn’t have tempted fate in New Orleans. ”I will not hold back from you, you have my word on that,” Elijah vowed. Once they were in his apartment, once he could face his youngest brother in private and tell him the horrors of the last thousand years that might colour his opinion on his siblings once and for all. Closing the door behind them, Elijah gestured to the room he had left as the owner had furbished it as a guest room. ”I’ll be glad to have you here. I’m not sure if you want to take a look at your space before we talk…” Elijah suspected the answer would be ‘later’. There were weighty matters here, ones that could perhaps put another fork in that road that was leading them towards Niklaus’ ritual.

No matter what Elijah said Henrik knew that it would not alleviate the guilt that he felt about what had happened to his siblings. Things had never been particularly easy for any of them while they were growing up, their father had been a tyrant who had been feared not just by his children but by many others in their village as well and Henrik had never thought that anything would change. He’d had a couple of friends outside of his own family but most of the other children his age had been happy to stay as far away as they could so it had made it a little lonely to say the least. He knew that that was perhaps why he had wanted Niklaus to go with him to see the wolves turn so much, he had wanted to be able to share that with someone and his older brother had seemed like the perfect person. He never could have known that that one request would lead to his own death or to his siblings becoming the first vampires but a part of him couldn’t help but feel that perhaps he should have known something bad would happen. He hadn’t always been privy to the conversations between his parents or his siblings, they had all tried to shield him from things as best they could, but he had listened and observed and he had seen the hurt in his mother’s eyes when she thought that no one was looking. Things had always been complicated for his family and one decision he had made had made them even more so and he knew that he had to live with the consequences and the guilt of that decision. “I know, mother did her best to try and hide it but I knew there was something wrong,” he admitted. It had taken him a while to learn the truth about what had happened, that his parents had lost a child before they travelled to the New World, but as soon as he had found out it had made sense. His mother had tried to protect her children while his father had tried to make them strong only neither of them had gone about it in the best way. Elijah still seemed to be the man he had known back then but Henrik knew from what his brother had said that dark matters lay in his past and he didn’t doubt that it was the same for all of them. He had been close to each of his siblings in their own way and it hurt to know that they had been through so much but now he was determined to make it right. Looking around the apartment, Henrik shook his head as Elijah offered to let him have a look around before they talked. “I’ll have a look around later, Elijah. I need you to tell me what has happened to you all and what Niklaus is coming her to do,” he said, his gaze steady as he looked over at his brother. He knew that he probably wasn’t going to like what Elijah had to tell him but he needed to know the truth. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The darkness that had always been there in his parents had been there longer than any of them have known as children. It had burned beneath his father’s shield, the anger his ancestors were famed for fuelled by his wife’s betrayal. In his mother it had started as grief, with the loss of a child before they had ventured to the new world. That seed of tragedy had grown, snowballing out of control when her youngest son had been lost just as her oldest child had been, albeit by a far more violent form of nature. Centuries later Elijah had found it easier to see why they had acted, even if he had never been able to bring himself to forgive them for their crimes. His own conscience had been bowed over the years, by his actions, his necessary actions, but he had never allowed it to break him. Learning of what he had done to Tatia had brought him closer to him being finally crushed by it but out in the woods for the second time the words of the woman he still loved had brought him some measure of relief. She did not blame him for what he had done, for his having made her break her promise to her son, and Tatia had implored him not to blame himself. Elijah could hear her words in what he had said to his brother now and that echo almost curved his lips into a smile. He had carried Tatia’s words with him for a thousand years, hiding them deep within his mind to take out only when he could bear to think of them, now, all those centuries later they were coming back to him as she had, as Henrik had.
If Esther had been aware that there was another way to bring her son back would she have resisted taking such drastic measures? Elijah couldn’t be sure but a part of him doubted his mother had been capable of handling things any other way at the time. ”She never truly spoke of it, neither did Finn or father but there were whispers in the village,” Elijah said tightly. ”There was nothing she could do against nature, no way to fight the plague.” Now there were antibiotics, other medicines that could keep death at bay for far longer than anything imaginable in their day. Few made it to his parents’ ages then, let alone to a hundred years old. Their children had made it ten times as long as the oldest living human, through world wars, pestilence, famine, impervious to it all. They had released their own plague on the world and now Niklaus was aiming to change the balance of power once again and become something new, something most would see as terrible. Trying to push the thought of how he had lost the brother he had known when they were younger aside, Elijah could only nod curtly as Henrik met his eye and asked to finally hear from him the truth. Making his way towards the lounge area of the open plan of the main room, Elijah headed straight for the crystal decanter. He pulled its stopper, filling two of the glasses standing beside it before setting it back and turning to his brother a glass in each hand. ”You’ve still not told me of how you returned but I suppose that if you were brought back in the same way as Tatia you are unaware of what happened after … you were taken.” He handed one of the glasses to his brother before sinking down heavily in a chair. ”Mother was broken by the grief, inconsolable. She became determined to find a way to make certain she did not lose a third child.” They had known nothing of her plans of course, not until it came time for the ritual.

Henrik had always known that there was a reason why Crowley had decided to send him to Mystic Falls but the demon had held off on telling him exactly what that reason was until the very last minute. Learning that his siblings were alive a thousand years after he died had come as a shock but deep down a part of him knew that perhaps he should not have been surprised. Their mother was a powerful witch who was protective of the people she loved and he knew that he should have realised that she would have done whatever she had to in order to keep them safe. Crowley had given him the mission of recruiting his siblings to the demon’s cause so that they would fight alongside him in the coming war but the more time Henrik was spending with his older brother the more he was starting to realise that perhaps it was time to break away from the demon’s influence. He would always be grateful to Crowley for everything that he had done to him but the truth was that Henrik was tired of being used as a puppet, only being able to spend time on around other people when he had a mission that he needed to carry out. He had long since grown tired of the company of demons and he knew that he was ready to start living his life for himself rather than so that he could do Crowley’s bidding. Breaking away was something that was going to be a lot easier said than done but it was something that he was starting to believe that he was ready for so it was something that he knew he was going to have to give some serious thought to. For now his main focus was learning all that he could from Elijah. While it was true that Crowley had told him that his siblings were alive he hadn’t told him exactly what had happened to them and that information was something that he was pretty sure he would only be able to get from his brother. “I wouldn’t be surprised if mother had still tried, she always liked trying to achieve the impossible,” Henrik admitted. That was something he had always admired about her while he was growing up, no matter what life had thrown her way she had always tried to find a way to get what she wanted but when it came to his siblings he was already getting the impression that it had come at a great cost. Even as he watched Elijah pour them each a drink Henrik could see that his brother was going to try and avoid telling him what had happened for as long as possible. In a way it was infuriating, Elijah had hinted at different things over the course of their conversation but he seemed reluctant to reveal exactly what had happened and that was enough to make Henrik’s curiosity grow even more. “Not quite. I know who brought me back and I also know why but you probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” he said, a humourless laugh leaving his lips as he lifted the glass Elijah had handed him to his lips and took a sip. “I can fill you in on all of that later though, first you need to stop avoiding the issue and tell me exactly what happened to all of you. I know you are a vampire, Elijah. I sensed it the moment we bumped into each other I just don’t know how it all came about or what Nik has planned,” he said, hoping that his brother would finally be straight with him. “You always tried to protect me when we were children but you don’t need to do that any longer. I haven’t been the boy you knew for a long time. I can handle the truth.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The truth could hold enough weight to crush a man. Over the years he had grown used to dancing around it, to manipulating in a way that he could live with. Elijah knew that he could quite easily have become as accustomed to lying as his siblings, for whom truth was often a challenge rather than a necessity. For them it was simple to let a lie slip from their tongues and just as simple to spit out the truth with the velocity of a bullet. Those words could cause just as much harm as a projectile, sizzling their way through flesh, leaving bodies in their wake. On occasion lies had left his own tongue but each time they had come with an aching conscience and the knowledge that the scales were tipping away from him once more. He had long been known as the honourable Mikaelson, the one for whom humanity didn’t lie in the past. He'd liked to think of himself as the truthful Mikaelson too but now that he found himself struggling to fill his youngest brother in on all that had happened in the wake of his death Elijah wasn’t certain he would be able to bear the weight. Saying the words would lighten his own burden but having already heard Henrik apologise for his death he knew that it would merely shift to his brother. They’d all attempted to take care of one another during their human lives, shielding each other from Mikael’s foul temper, bonding closely enough that a few muttered words had bound them for centuries. Would withholding the truth from Henrik now shield him once more or would it only bring him harm?
Unfortunately, Elijah thought as he heard Henrik speak of their mother, it was likely to be the latter. Targets had been drawn on them all when Esther had completed her ritual and they’d spent the last thousand years unsuccessfully trying to remove them. The weariness of those thousand years settled into the lines of his face as Elijah shook his head. ”I imagine that mother tried time and time again and in some ways might just have managed the impossible, just not in the way she ever intended.” Having failed to fight nature one, Esther hadn’t rested until she’d broken through its strictly ordered lines. Perhaps if she hadn’t her children would not have become the monsters she then turned against. Niklaus might not have been Mikael’s son in any sense of the word but he could see his mother in him, in that bloody minded stubbornness that would likely see this ritual success as the first had. If Esther had been able to curb the darker parts of herself then her living children would have had their natural lives, would have died at a relatively young age … and not been here to see those they loved come back to them. It had undoubtedly been because of them that Henrik and Tatia had been brought back here but he had believed that neither one of them could explain that reappearance … until now.
After a thousand years he was skilled at keeping up a blank appearance but as Henrik chuckled and lifted his glass, Elijah’s mask cracked. He stared at his brother with open curiosity. ”I would likely believe me than you would think,” he cautioned. After all he’d seen he was certain that he knew what lay beyond this town. His own glass bit into his fingers as they tightened around it. He wasn’t the only one to know, to have experienced. His brother, so newly returned had discovered more than he’d been about to reveal. ”We were protecting you for your own good, for you safety,” he managed hoarsely. ”The truth is that mother couldn’t bear to lose any of us after you were killed. When I told you that she was prepared to fight against nature she did it quite literally. Esther completed a ritual that guaranteed us all eternal life – for the price of an eternal thirst. We were the first, the Original vampires.” It was blunter than he had intended to be but it had rapidly become obvious that however he had been brought back, Henrik had learned far more than Tatia about the truth.

When he was younger Henrik knew that his siblings had done their best to shield him from the majority of the torment and abuse that their father had subjected them to but he had never been oblivious to what was going on around him. Even as a child he had watched from the shadows and seen just what the man he should have been able to look up to had subjected his older siblings to and there were times when he had fallen foul of that wrath as well. If anything it had worked to bring them closer together instead of drive them apart the way that their father had perhaps wanted to but Henrik knew that he hadn’t been that young boy who needed to be protected since he was brought back. Elijah had no idea what he had been through since then but if he did he had a feeling that his brother would never look at him in the same way again and Henrik would be lying if he said that didn’t scare him. For too long he had done Crowley’s bidding, too worried about speaking out and losing the only family that he had thought he’d had, but now he knew that his siblings were still alive and that at least one of them was in Mystic Falls and as far as Henrik was concerned that changed everything. He would do what he had come to Mystic Falls to do for Crowley but after that he was done, he was ready to start living his own life and he knew better than to waste whatever time he might be able to spend with his family while he could. “You’re all still here, that’s what matters. I’m glad that I got to see you again,” Henrik admitted. He didn’t doubt that had it not been for his connection to Elijah and the others then Crowley probably wouldn’t have bothered going to the trouble of bringing him back to life but he had the chance to see his siblings again and he knew that he was never going to think badly of that. As Elijah said that he would believe more than he might think, Henrik couldn’t help but laugh, taking another sip of his drink before studying his brother carefully for a moment. “Really?” he asked, an eyebrow raised as he looked over at his brother. “You would believe that the King of Hell brought me back, taught me all about magic and has had me doing his bidding for the last eight years?” he asked, pretty sure that no matter how open minded Elijah was trying to be now that even he would likely find that difficult to come to terms with. There was so much more out there in the world that most people knew but even so the idea of angels and demons being real was more than most people could understand. “I know you were but you don’t have to do that anymore, I can handle it,” he assured his brother, relieved that Elijah was finally starting to be honest with him. As Elijah finally told him what had happened, Henrik let out a breath he hadn’t known he had been holding. “I had my suspicions but I didn’t want to believe it,” he admitted, taking a moment to get his head around it before looking over at his brother once more. “So all vampires are linked to the five of you,” he added, nodding in understanding. “And mother and father? What happened to them?” he asked, knowing that there had to be more to the story than Elijah was telling him. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Miracle wasn’t a word that Elijah often would’ve associated with his life. Some would have seen an eternity as a blessing, a way to experience everything, to travel everywhere, to see it all, but most who were offered some semblance of it knew after a few short years, a few months even, that it was a curse rather than a blessing. Even those who embraced it initially tired of it, they grew bored, they grew reckless, they took the torment that hadn’t faded with their turning out on those not quite so durable. He had seen it with his own siblings, had watched others despair and attempt to self-destruct. Some, those he had occasionally seen as lucky, got the ending they seemed to wish for. Others were doomed to that eternal misery. Elijah had seen himself of the latter, finding little blessing as the centuries passed, the joys that he did find were short lived, a brief respite snatched away as punishment. At first his brother’s return had seemed impossible, the words that had passed Henrik’s lips to prove who he was the only thing that had brought down the wall of doubt, then It had started to seem like a miracle, a gift to them for all their suffering but doubt was still there, the cynical certainty of a man who had watched too much be taken. Time and time again Elijah had called himself cynical, had forced himself to open up that scarred heart of himself again and each time he had been proven right.
Oh what he would’ve given for Henrik to be right now, for his family being still here being enough. Elijah could hear that voice in his mind though, that warning little whisper that only allowed him to nod at his brother’s words. ”And I’m glad to see you too brother,” he promised. If this rally against Niklaus was to be swan song then at least he was singing it with those who he most would’ve wanted to hear it around him. There was much to tell both Henrik and Tatia in the time he would have left, things that would likely stun both. In the last thousand years he had continued to find things that were shocking, even after he thought himself jaded. Elijah’s mouth curved into a thin slanted smile. ”I can promise you. Living as long as I have has let me experience many things brother.” But it had not given him more than the simple image of ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’ that was pervasive the world over. He’d always believed that if there were anything more to it then something benevolent, or the opposite, would have made itself known to a family that brought so much destruction with it by now. Elijah stared at his brother, words measuring themselves on his tongue before he managed to speak. ”Believe yes, because I trust my brother, but expect to hear such a thing? Not in all my years.” Despite the almost fantastical nature of his brother’s truth Elijah still felt himself almost hesitating to reveal his own path. Henrik might have been old enough to handle it now but he didn’t want to change the way his brother looked at him. ”It’s a reality we have all struggled with since mother turned us,” Elijah admitted wearily as he let his head fall against the back of the chair. ”For over a hundred years it was just the five of us. We had no idea that we were capable of creating others. Once we did ... the lineages took on a life of their own. Esther ... mother ... did not live past the night she turned us but father did, he has spent all the time trying to find us and deal with the monstrosities they created.” There was a weariness to his words. As youngsters they had tried to shield Henrik from Mikael, protect their brother from seeing how their father treated Niklaus but even then Elijah knew that his younger brother had occasionally seen the man beneath.

From his first day back Henrik had known that the world around him had changed, he had spent months cooped up in Crowley’s lair with just a load of old grimoires and a handful of demons to keep him company but even then he had seen the difference not just in the way the demons dressed but also in the way they spoke. Back then he had pretended to be oblivious to it all but even then he had been doing just as he had when he was around his family and the others in his village, he had watched in silence and in doing so he had been able to pick up on things that he otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. Now he was no longer the scared child that he had been when he was first brought back, he had grown up a lot since then and he knew that he was more than capable of making his own decisions. He hadn’t known why Crowley had sent him to Mystic Falls to begin with but the moment he had first bumped into Elijah it had all started to fall into place. If his brother was in town then the others wouldn’t be far behind and with what he knew about the coming war Crowley needed all of the powerful allies that he could get. Henrik had known straight away that there had to have been a reason why Elijah was still alive a thousand years after he should have died and the fact that his brother had already adopted the style of the times had been enough to make him realise that he hadn’t been brought back recently. There was more going on than he had been made aware of so far and Henrik was determined to get to the bottom of it. As Elijah spoke, Henrik felt a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth. “That may be so but somehow I think this might be difficult to believe even for you,” he admitted. It was one thing to have seen a lot of things over time but it was something completely different to learn that demons were real. Back when they were younger they were just monsters told in stories to try and convince children to behave but Henrik had learned the hard way that some monsters were real. He had lived among demons for the last eight years and he had no desire to go back to that way of life. While it was true that he was still loyal to Crowley he knew that no matter what happened he would fight to stay on Earth where he belonged. Now he knew that his family were still alive after all those years he knew that he wasn’t going to let anything happen to make him leave them again. “It probably sounds crazy but it is the truth Haki,” he said gently. “Demons are real and so are angels and so many other things we never would have believed when we were younger,” he explained. While it was true that he had yet to come across an angel himself, or at least not as far as he was aware, he had heard from Crowley and the other demons just how much they hated the angels so he knew that it had to be true. A few in particular seemed to enjoy causing them headaches and even though a part of Henrik longed to finally be able to live a normal life after living in the shadows for such a long time he knew that he was ready to start living in the real world now while he had the chance. As Elijah explained what had happened after they were turned, Henrik nodded slowly. “Do you know where father is now?” he asked as he looked over at his brother. “Perhaps I could reason with him. I don’t want any of you to get hurt.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

There had been a time when magic was not the ridiculous notion most thought it to be now. Before humanity had started to explain their world with science, magic and religion were the only things people had known. Elijah had believed as a child that magic would be his to control once he came of age, like his mother he would wield it for good, but the skill had never truly been there, not the way it had been for Kol, or for Henrik. He had made his peace with that, had thrown himself instead into becoming the sort of man his father should have been. Those around him had respected that, had respected his family’s legacy. Now it was an anathema, as much of one as the rest of the supernatural world. It was entertainment to those who remained unaware of what happened under their noses in this world. They revelled in slaughter on the big and small screens, took great joy in terrifying themselves with it all. Never did it occur to them that the very things they laughed about and shivered over lived side by side with them. Elijah never would have believed that after all this time there were things out there that he remained blind to. He’d set foot on every continent, had called most major cities home at one time or another, had seen, experienced, touched so much and yet he had still found himself stunned. Watching his brother’s mouth crook in that familiar smile now Elijah knew that he could never have predicted Henrik’s return to them, nor Tatia’s.
Elijah could pretend all he liked now that there was not a word Henrik could say to surprise him but finding his brother in the town square, hearing his brother’s pet name for him emerge from a face a decade older than the one he had known had just done that. All the experience in the world hadn’t prepared him for the return of the dead and he suspected now that it might not prepare him for what he would hear. The corner of his mouth still hooked up, Elijah shook his head. ”I supposed we will have to see just how far you’re able to open my eyes with what has happened.” In the end the reality was they were opened pretty damn far. Elijah managed to keep his expression schooled, a thousand years of life allowed him to do that, but his throat worked as he tried to swallow the notion of heaven and hell actually being on earth, of his brother being kept by beings from the latter. Letting out a long breath, Elijah dragged a hand over the lower half of his face. ”It sounds more than crazy but given what we became I can see the truth in it. I’ve seen many of those things we could not have believed in.” They were things that they never would have believed in, all of the children scoffing at the tales told around the fireside. It was all true, all of those tales containing a kernel of something. Elijah’s throat worked once more as he studied his brother’s face. He had always been their father’s favourite, the golden son who had not yet fought against him the way his other children had. ”Father has not been seen in decades, although I don’t put it past him to still be trying to track us. Do you honestly believe that after all this time he would stay his hand when it came to Niklaus? For a thousand years his sole desire has been to erase their mistakes, to slaughter us all.” So often Mikael had almost succeeded with his plan, leaving them to escape by the skin of their teeth. Would his plan extend to Henrik once he realised his youngest son had also managed to thwart nature?

Henrik had always suspected that there was a reason why Crowley had gone to the trouble of bringing him back to life a thousand years after he had died. A Warlock who had only just started coming into his powers when he died never should have caught the attention of a crossroads demon, let alone one who would end up becoming the King of Hell, but Crowley had always been very good at keeping things to himself. Now that he was in Mystic Falls and he knew that Elijah and the rest of his siblings were still alive, however, all had become clear and now he couldn’t help but feel angry that Crowley had kept the truth from him for such a long time. His family had become the Original Vampires, the first of their kind that the world had ever known, and from them every other vampire had originated either directly or indirectly. Before he died he never would have thought that such a thing was even possible but since he had been brought back to life his eyes had been opened to so much that he never would have thought possible so the truth was that very little surprised him these days. He knew now that he had made a mistake as he had trusted Crowley to tell him things that were important but the demon had kept the fact that his siblings were alive from him and Henrik wasn’t sure if he could forgive him for that just yet. For such a long time he had been Crowley’s pawn, he had done whatever the demon had asked of him no matter how difficult and yet Crowley had still lied to him so he knew that it was about time he started living his life the ay that he wanted to at last instead. A long time ago Henrik had made his peace with the fact that his siblings would have died a thousand years ago but now he knew that they were still alive he knew that he wanted to get to know the people that they had become now. He knew better than to think that they would be just the same as they had been when he had known them, they had lived a thousand years longer than he had and they had been through so much together but at the end of the day they were still his family so he knew that he would stick by them no matter what. Elijah at least seemed like the brother he had known back then and for that he was glad. “We will in time, I have a lot to tell you,” Henrik assured him. There was a lot that Elijah still didn’t know, after all Henrik had yet to tell him that he could actually do magic, but he knew that that would come in time. For now he was more interested in getting to know who Haki was now and he had a feeling that it wouldn’t be too long before he started finding out the answer to that question. “So have I,” he admitted as Elijah said that he had seen a lot of things that he wouldn’t have believed in before. “I wonder if the world really was the same back then and we were just oblivious to it,” he added. While it was true that he had known that his mother was a Witch and that there were men in the village who turned into wolves every time there was a full moon he couldn’t help but wonder if some of the other creatures that were in the world now were around back then too but deep down he knew that they would likely never know the answer to that question. As Elijah spoke again, Henrik studied his brother’s face carefully for a moment. “I won’t let father hurt any of you,” he promised. No matter what happened he knew that he wasn’t going to let anything happen to his siblings, not when he had just found them again. “It might not work but even if there is a chance that it might then I have to try. I owe you all at least that much,” he added. Everything that had happened to them after his death had been because of a decision that he had made and they had spent the rest of their lives hunted by their father so he knew that he at least had to try and right that wrong. It would take a decade to entirely catch Henrik up on all that had happened to them in the last thousand years. Some details Elijah knew he could never tell his brother, the shame too strong, the truth too bloody. He had his own crimes, despite the attempts he had made to keep his hands clean, but his siblings had far more and Elijah was reluctant to colour his youngest brother’s view of the sister and brothers he loved with the monstrosity their parents had imbued in what had once been human flesh. Had Henrik not been killed that night he would’ve seen his siblings grow older, would’ve been there to witness the important moments in their lives, to see them find live, to become an uncle, to watch them grow old and grey as he grew himself. Only he hadn’t lived and the night he had died had ended those possible futures forever. The ripples of that night had spread, continued to spread now and each of them would have hundreds of lifetimes to explain. Elijah knew he had to let the others tell things to Henrik in their own way. Despite what Niklaus had planned for when he arrived in town he could not in good conscience keep his brothers apart. The loss of Henrik had torn his brother’s tender heart apart and it was time that the wound carved so deeply in Niklaus’ heart was allowed to heal. If he could make certain that happened then perhaps he could convince Niklaus not to go through with his plans, show him that it was time that Kol and Rebekah, perhaps even Finn, were set free. This was the time for their family to live again, to truly live and not just survive.
There was a lot of hard work to put in before they could get there however, starting with keeping Tatia alive. Elijah knew that Henrik would be willing to help with that but did not yet want to turn brother against brother. The explanation for what was to come was one to have later. Elijah nodded at his brother’s words, his eyes growing troubled even as he forced his smile to remain. ”And I you. At least we have the time now.” His brother had been returned to him, given a second chance, just as Tatia had been. Remotely Elijah wondered whether they had been brought back the same way but Tatia had no memory of it, no tale of the King of Hell bringing her back to life. Amusement huffed out beneath the cover of his fingers as he looked up at his brother. ”We were so isolated then, it could quite easily have been going on all around us, all around the world, and we never would have known.” There were men who turned to wolves under the light of the moon and magic flowing through the veins of his mother’s line, and it had all seemed so normal. Who was to say that other things in other parts of the world hadn’t been just as normal. Perhaps it was better they had been blind to it, who knew what else his mother would have done that night if she’d had other options. What other monstrosities would Esther have created in her desperation? Where Esther had done anything to keep them alive, their father had done anything to kill the things they had created. A thousand years later and his father had not tired of the pursuit. Would that now extend to his youngest son? The thought twisted Elijah’s stomach as he pushed to his feet to refill his glass from the decanter. ”I’m not sure there is any way to stop him now. He’s no longer the man you knew and perhaps he is even further beyond reason than Niklaus. You truly believe you owe us something?” he asked, turning back to his brother. Henrik had told him that guilt lay heavy on his shoulders but even the hardest heart would not believe that he should have to pay for a child’s mistake yet again.

Henrik had always suspected that Crowley was up to something when he brought him back to life and right from the start it had been clear that there was a hidden agenda lying just below the surface but the truth hadn’t come to light until Henrik had bumped into Elijah earlier that day. Now he knew exactly why Crowley had brought him back, the demon needed his influence to sway his siblings to join his side in the coming war. All along he had been used by Crowley but the truth was that he had ended up getting something out of it as well. The spell books the demon had provided him with had given him the chance to learn more about magic than he ever would have had the chance to learn on his own. Now he was in Mystic Falls he was determined to start putting that magic to good use. He knew that he could just keep his head down and reconnect with his family but he had done his research before making his way to the town and he knew about the reputation that it had. Too many people died in Mystic Falls and he knew that if there was something that he could do to stop that then he would. Henrik knew that he had been doing Crowley’s bidding for far too long, he had carried out lots of different tasks on the demon’s behalf and now he knew that it was about time that he finally started living his own life especially now that he knew that he had at least one brother in town. He wasn’t sure just how long it would end up being before he saw Nik and the others but for now he was happy just getting to know that person that Elijah had become. He knew that Elijah had changed but they were still family and he knew that that was what mattered. “That’s true, we do. I’m not planning on going anywhere,” he nodded. He knew that Crowley hadn’t necessarily planned on him staying in Mystic Falls for too long but as far as Henrik was concerned he would stay in the town for as long as his family did. He had missed out on so many years of their lives and even after he was brought back he had spent eight years believing his siblings to have died a thousand years ago so he knew that he wasn’t going to miss out on the chance to spend any more time with them if he could help it. As Elijah spoke again, Henrik nodded. “You’re right, we were,” he agreed. “At least we know the truth now.” Their mother had tried to shield them from certain things going on around them and there was every chance that there was so much more that they just didn’t know at the time. Now his eyes had been opened to everything that was going on around him and he knew that he wouldn’t go back to the way things used to be even if he could. He wasn’t the naive boy he had been back then, he knew who he was and what he could do and he was finally in the position where he could look out for his family the way they had always looked out for him while he was growing up. As Elijah asked if he really believed he owed his siblings something, Henrik studied his brother carefully for a moment before answering. “I know you said that what happened isn’t my fault but it doesn’t change the fact that because of me none of you were able to live normal lives. I’m always going to owe you Elijah so if there is even the smallest chance that I can stop father from trying to kill all of you then I have to take it.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON
