He’d slipped a little bit too far. Those late nights in the bar became more and more frequent, with a glass of something alcoholic glued to his hand, knocking them back until the world around him faded into a blur. He was just trying to drown out the reality he was stuck in because he didn’t have the privilege of turning it all off like Remzi. He couldn’t run from his emotions like his brother did, they were stuck with him and fuck he was hurting. The shit hand he had been dealt by Allah slapped him in the face after Ayla left him sitting in that booth. Perhaps he’d gone a little too far with his accusations, but he couldn’t hold back when he asked her about Hector. Hector? It didn’t make sense, but nothing made sense anymore. He’d done nothing but good with his life so far. Raik left his home as a young man to fight for his country. He saved countless people on the battlefield and for those he couldn’t he stayed with them until the bitter end. He’d chosen the right path every single damn time, putting others before himself and how was he repaid? With nothing but pain. He watched his co-worker get shot, his brother lost his human life, his childhood sweetheart was torn apart and to top it all off he was murdered. Well, fuck the world and fuck Allah. There was nothing good left for him. Ayla was the only light in his life preventing him from spiralling into a pit of depression. He’d given up an entirety in heaven for a shit human life on earth because he was too damn busy putting Remzi before himself. Ayla was something for him to focus on, keeping him grounded, but now she’d gone he had nothing left. He was done with choosing the right path because all it did was lead him towards some shitty situation. He finished his beer, clumsily placing it down on the edge of the bar, managing to stand it upright before he dragged himself away to the toilet. The same toilet in which he found Remzi covered in blood with two girls dead on the floor. Once he left the military he didn’t think he’d ever see a dead body again, but Remzi made sure Raik saw plenty, including his own. He hauled himself into one of the small cubicles, closely the door behind him before sitting down on the toilet with a heavy thud. He fumbled around for his cellphone in his pocket, finally pulling it out. Everytime he was trashed he’d unlock his phone, go through his contacts until he found Ayla’s number and just stare at the screen, reading her name over and over again until his eyes would burn. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been staring at the phone, ten minutes or ten hours, but eventually he slid it back into his pocket digging out his next item. Something to numb everything. There was a loud thud on the door causing him to jump slightly. “Alright… alright.” He quickly shoved everything back into his pocket, unlocking the door and opening it ungracefully. “Kit.” He greeted Kit with a huge grin, throwing his arms around Kit to bring him in for a tight hug. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ KIT FELT LIKE SHIT. AFTER THE IMPROMPTU intervention, he’d been trying to get better. Working at a club perhaps wasn’t the best place to try to get clean, but he’d done it before, right? Or had it only been laying dormant until something else triggered it?
Whatever it was, it had to stop. He knew that. Maybe he wouldn’t die from it, but something else would get him eventually, and being a fucking mess wasn’t any way to get back Katja. If she even wanted him back. Wasn’t as simple as an apology, but he’d have to get himself on the straight and narrow before trying to figure out what he’d do. He couldn’t be good for someone else if he wasn’t even good for himself.
And working sober made it easier to spot others that’d gone too far, or people like him, who made this a habit. He hadn’t expected one of them to be Raik, though.
Raik was the good counterpart to his brother. He was a soldier through and through, a kid who probably played with G.I. Joe dolls and kept his dream to be like him when he grew up. But now he was mirroring Kit’s behaviour, getting wasted and disappearing into the bathrooms only to return with a sudden newfound energy. Was it PTSD, the aftershocks of coming back to life, or a mixture of both? Whatever it was, Kit didn’t wanna see him go through it━he couldn’t recognize that he was worth much, but someone else? He wasn’t gonna watch Raik lose himself and do nothing about it.
The first time Raik went to the bathroom that night, Kit told someone to cover him for a minute and followed. He stalked into the washrooms, letting the music fade behind the door, and listened closely to the sounds coming from within the stalls. Once he found Raik’s, he tried to open it himself, but began slamming his fist into it upon realizing it was locked. “Open up!” Kit shouted, still banging until the door finally swung open and Raik appeared, suddenly happy, suddenly energized.
And with a smudge left under his nose.
“Dude━” Kit began, but then Raik was hugging him, the sheer force of it knocking Kit back a few steps. He steadied himself and cleared his throat, then patted Raik’s back a few times before pushing them apart. “Fuck’s up with you, man? Doin’ bl-w in the bathroom, drinkin’ like a fish? You ain’t like this.” He didn’t wanna get heavy right away, but clearly Raik was past the point of soft suggestions━plus, Kit wasn’t really a “soft suggestions” kinda guy. “You… good? Like, mentally?” He frowned, trying to search Raik’s face for some semblance of lucidity. “Listen, I know… comin’ back ain’t easy; if you wanna talk t’someone, I think my brother could, I dunno, help with that.” He’d have to run it by Kace, but he couldn’t see why not. Actually, he could see a dozen reasons, but Kit would owe him if it helped straighten Raik out. Ah, wait, maybe Theo was a better favour to call in…

To begin with it was liberating saying fuck it to the world and doing whatever the hell he liked, but Raik knew it was out of character because. Out of control and off the rails? That badge belonged to Remzi and he wore it proudly. It didn’t suit Raik. His aim was to get so trashed that he’d go home that evening and fall asleep with ease instead of lying in bed staring at the ceiling while his mind replays everything that’s happened recently. His extra bit on the side wasn’t going to help him sleep though, but at least it would give him an ounce of happiness even if it was only for an hour. If Remzi spotted Raik now would he be proud of his big brother for having a bit of fun? For a few minutes perhaps. Remzi had two brain cells left in his head, dancing around together trying to make sense of things, but those two brain cells would work together quickly and notice something wasn't right with Raik. He longed for things to go back to how they were before Remzi died. They were a solid unit with an unbreakable bond which turned out to be capable of breaking. Raik’s death fractured it, now they were trying to glue it back together. It was taking a while and parts of it kept falling off because of Ayla. Maybe she held the ability to shatter it again. His thoughts were pretty fucking scrambled as he swayed back and forth on the toilet seat. Nothing was really making sense, so instead of thinking he focused on the task in hand. The sound of music thudding through the walls of the toilet were helping to get him pumped too. Fuck thinking, tonight was about getting trashed. He didn’t even recognise it was Kit’s voice on the other side, but he was pleased when he opened the door and his friend was standing there. Raik straightened himself up after hugging Kit. “Doing what? Nah dude… it ain’t like that… I’m just… just chillin’ man.” He brought his arm up, using the sleeve of his shirt to rub his nose. “What? ‘Cause I’m good.” He tried to brush Kit’s question off with a laugh, but it weighed heavy on him. It had been a while since someone asked if he was okay. “It’s all good.” He placed his hands gently on Kit’s shoulder, moving him to one side so he could leave the cubicle. He headed for the sink, washing his hands as he glanced up at himself in the mirror. Raik didn’t like the person staring at him, the person was unrecognisable. He slowly turned the tap off as he sighed, placing both hands on the basin. “I — ‘course I’m not good… y’know we saw some shit out there on the battlefield but seeing your own body with your throat slit open? You ain’t suppose to see that. I can’t stop thinkin’ about it. It’s…” The image was burnt so harshly into his mind that he’d never get rid of it. But it wasn’t just that though. “Remzi’s getting married to someone… she works here. Ayla… she’s pretty amazin’ and… I can’t stop thinkin’ about her.” His hands gripped tightly around the basin as his head dropped. He inhaled harshly, trying to hold back the tears. “She fuckin’ Hector though… bloodsuckin’ piece of shit… it hurts…‘cause I think I’m fallin’ for her which is fucked because she’s marrying my brother” If he wasn’t careful his legs would be carrying him to Hector’s office, where he’d start throwing fists at the vampire for touching Ayla. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ ‘COURSE HE WAS GONNA DENY IT AT FIRST. What dude wanted to willingly admit he had some other shit goin’ on? Kit was a fuckin’ hypocrite, obviously, but maybe that was why he was the best person for Raik to talk to about this. If he ever talked about it.
Raik kept insisting he was good, and Kit turned to watch him move to the sink, a frown settling onto his features. He didn’t believe it for one fuckin’ second, but he stayed quiet for a minute, hoping that crossing his arms and staring would do the trick. Eventually, it did.
He started talking about his dead body, and Kit knew he’d guessed right. He had no experience with that shit, but he’d had more than enough fuckin’ nightmares about it. And, honestly, he would’ve rathered seeing his own body instead of his brother’s. He knew Raik would probably agree with him, but they weren’t measuring their fuckin’ issues right now. This was about Raik and how far he was slipping.
“It’s fucked up, man.” Kit finished for him, nodding slowly, “You can talk t’my brother, huh? I’m sure… y’know, I think he saw a lot of the same shit.” And Kit would make himself fuckin’ scarce for that situation.
But that wasn’t it━’course it wasn’t; it never was. It was always about a chick, too. Kit just didn’t think it’d be about… Ayla.
His brows went up when Raik mentioned her name, but he figured now wasn’t the time to question Raik’s taste in women. Yeah, she was beautiful, but she didn’t have a lot goin’ on upstairs. She didn’t seem like the right kinda girl for Raik. For one night, sure, but in love? Man, he was absolutely fucked.
Kit settled on the wall and let Raik get it all out, but as soon as he mentioned Hector, he was pushing off, moving to stand a few feet behind Raik, catching himself in the mirror’s reflection. “That is fucked, man━not fucked, but fuckin’ sucks. But she ain’t bangin’ Hector.” He would’ve laughed if Raik wasn’t so distraught by everything. “There ain’t no fuckin’ way. Hector sleeps with bitches like Hannya, not Ayla. She’s way too… soft for him, man.” He chuckled softly, and shifted closer, dropping his hand onto Raik’s shoulder. “He was helpin’ her ‘cause she… really sucks at her job━no offence━but that was it. You really wanna steal your brother’s woman?” Kit couldn’t fathom it. For the half of the time that Kace actually liked women, he couldn’t see them having the same taste. At least not anything more than looks-wise, which wasn’t the most important thing for Kit.
And he’d had it all with Katja, but he fucked that shit up, didn’t he? Whatever. Maybe he was a lost fuckin’ cause, but Raik didn’t have to be.

This shit was supposed to make him feel better, but it was doing the opposite. It was causing him to think too fucking much about everything. His mind was cluttered with so many different thoughts it was difficult to pick one out to share with Kit. He picked the most obvious one. His death. Something which should have been permanent but was somehow reversed. Raik didn’t understand the logic behind what happened, but it happened. Allah wouldn’t approve however there was a long list of things Allah wouldn’t approve of, such as squeezing Raik squeezing himself into a cubicle to have a pick me up or him having feelings for his brother’s fiancée. No matter how much he spoke about what happened he still struggled because Raik couldn’t find anyone who could relate to how he was feeling about his own death. He’d only brushed over the subject with Ayla, not wanting to worry her. “Your brother?” He muttered, glancing up for a second catching a glimpse of Kit in the reflection before returning to staring at his own hands. Each time a thought of Ayla popped into his head he thought about Hector too. What did he have that Raik didn’t? Apart from money and immorality, but surely none of that mattered to Ayla? “Too soft?” Raik’s hands dropped from the basin as he turned to face Kit, “But… she told me it was a one time thing and he was upset so she was trying to make him feel better… fuckin’ Remzi bro. I don’t know why the fuck I listen to him!” Someone needed to give Remzi an Oscar because sometimes his performances were outstanding. The lies flowed off his tongue so easily, but Raik couldn’t figure out why he lied about this. He didn’t give a shit about Ayla, but that was a conversation for another day. “Fuck no. I don’t wanna steal her… I would never do that… these feelings, they’ll pass” All they’d been doing was growing stronger though. Each time he saw Ayla he fell for her a little more. Raik fumbled in his pocket for his phone, pulling it out clumsily before dropping it on the floor, “I gotta call her… tell her I’m sorry… tell her…” Tell her he was falling in love with her and it was driving him crazy not speaking to her. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ IT FELT LIKE EVERYBODY KNEW ABOUT KACE, but, apparently, Raik wasn’t in that group. “Yeah, man, my brother. Kace. He… he was dead, too. Came back. He’d know what you’re goin’ through.” Even if Kace had been back for a little longer, he still seemed to be unsteady some days, which would give him someone to talk to, as well. But Raik would probably benefit from talkin’ to someone who was steady most of the time. He’d set that up later, though… right now, his main concern was Raik spiralling into the same depths Kit was trying so desperately to pull himself out of.
It was like the story of the soldier and the hole he’d dug, he thought wryly. Only another brother could get you out━and you’d have to do it together.
The first challenge was getting Raik to realize that Hector hadn’t slept with Ayla. There was absolutely no way. Kit didn’t care what Remzi had told him━that brainless idiot wouldn’t have a fuckin’ clue.
“Yeah, man, no way. Don’t listen to him.” He puffed out a laugh, happy that Raik had finally gotten himself there in the end.
What he wouldn’t understand right now, though, was that these feelings weren’t gonna pass. Maybe he wouldn’t even get that when he was sober. “Yeah, sure,” Kit scoffed sarcastically, though he kept his voice light━he didn’t wanna give Raik another fuckin’ breakdown.
“Nah, nah, nah,” Kit started shaking his head the moment Raik began stumbling over his words, seemingly desperate to make things right with Ayla right this second. “Fuck no, man, that’s a bad fuckin’ idea.” He bent, scooping up Raik’s phone before he could get it. “You’re all fucked up right now, and it’s late. She’s not gonna know what the fuck you’re talkin’ about━you’ll probably just upset ‘er.” Lord knows almost everything fuckin’ did.
Kit put Raik’s phone in his own pocket for a minute, then set his hands on the other man’s arms, patting one lightly. “Jus’ go home, man, get yourself cleaned up, get some sleep, then talk to ‘er. Don’t rush it. You wanna do it right.” He backed up and started leading Raik to the door. “Lemme call you a cab, huh? Get you home. Don’t gotta keep partyin’ so hard,” He reached for the door, though he didn’t pull it open just yet, continuing to keep the music at bay for just a little longer. He wanted Raik to have a minute to steady himself, to catch his breath, and then they’d go back out once Raik was ready.

Raik perked up a little when Kit mentioned Kace had been through the same thing. There was another person in Mystic Falls who’d know exactly how he was feeling. “Do you, um, would it be okay to speak to him? Would he be okay with it?” Raik wouldn’t blame the guy if he wanted to forget it ever happened. Focusing on the here and now. Unfortunately Raik hadn’t reached that stage yet. One day he was certain all of this would be behind him. He’d managed to pull himself through awful situations in the military. This was just another shitty situation to handle. The conversation he needed to have with Remzi would be saved until the morning. If Raik had to guess though Ayla had told him one thing and his brain processed it as something completely different. Like when their mom would tell him not to climb the huge tree in the park near their house because he’d break a bone. He’d run off towards the park with the idea his mom said it was okay to climb the tree so long as he didn’t break a bone. Sometimes it must have been nice for Remzi having the most basic thoughts running through his mind. Raik just couldn’t relate. He never climbed that tree in the park, instead he just sat at the bottom waiting for Remzi to fall. He caught the sarcasm in Kit’s voice. The comment didn’t exactly fill him with hope. The feelings had to pass though. He had no fucking choice in the matter otherewise he’d spend the rest of his life in love with his brothers wife. An imaginary light bulb lit up over his head when he thought about texting Ayla. It was a brilliant idea because his mind was overflowing with thoughts that he wanted to share with her. She needed to know how he felt and now was the perfect time. But then the phone tumbled from his hands and Kit snatched up off the floor before Raik even registered it was no longer in his hands. “Upset her? No… no… I don’t wanna upset her, man.” Even though he was convinced now was the right time to call Ayla he also trusted Kit. “You’re right. I’ll speak to her tomorrow.” When everything had worn off and he was able to thread together a sentence. Raik nodded in agreement, his head bouncing up and down heavily like it weighed a ton. It felt like it did sometimes with all those confusing thoughts in his mind. “Good idea.” Whatever he wanted to say to Ayla could wait until the morning. “Thanks for listening to me, bro. Means a lot.” He placed his arms around Kit, pulling him in for a tight hug. “Kace is lucky to have a brother like you.” He One that took the time to listen instead of one who thought with his dick. Whatever, he still loved Remzi regardless. They were best friends and Raik was determined to keep things that way. He pulled back with a smile on his face. “No need for the cab. I’m a few blocks away. I'll make it home.” He took his phone back off Kit, “I’ll even text you when I get home.” Raik walked back into the club, the music vibrating through his body. The night was still young, but Raik wasn’t. The hangover tomorrow was going to be hellish. He flashed Kit one last smile before dragging his exhausted body through the club and out the doors. KIT CLARKE - the end!
