Had they won? It was difficult to say. Mal was still alive, but Krista’s memories of him had been wiped. That must have hurt him a little bit, especially if Pierre was right about their connection. It didn’t bring back Baxter though. Revenge always felt sweet to begin with but then reality would set in that it wasn’t going to change the present. She killed the men who killed Mako, but it didn’t bring him back. She’d taken Krista away from Mal, but Baxter was still technically dead. They would have killed Mal too if it weren’t for those stupid creatures flying through the window. Those successful inventions that Lena and Pierre had been working so hard to achieve. How had he managed to do it? It was a ship that had sailed now though because Mal was never going to give them his secret recipe. Her hand curled around Pierre’s as they walked down the sidewalk. They’d been married for centuries, yet she still locked her fingers into his whenever they were walking somewhere. The love she felt for Pierre was the same now as it was when they started dating. Everyday she considered herself lucky to have met someone like Pierre. Protective and caring. A man who would do anything for her. She started to slow down as they approached High Stakes Society, with a for sale sign advertised across the front. The place had seen better days, it was clear the current owner didn’t care about the business. The sign above the door was on the verge of falling off and the place needed a new layer of paint. “Pierre… we buy?” She nodded towards the building, glancing over at her husband. She wasn’t prepared to leave behind Mystic Falls whilst Baxter was still at college. They’d left their son to his own devices once before and he ended up getting killed. “We can stay here and keep an eye on Baxter.” The business was the perfect excuse for the couple to stay in town. ━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ WELL, MAL WAS STILL OUT THERE somewhere, likely spreading more poison wherever he went. That was all he did. He was poison, a disease━a plague on Mystic Falls! Mal and all of his little experiments would suffer (except Baxter, of course), just like they had in the Church. At least he no longer had his human to keep him company, and Pierre could only imagine the pain that would bring him. After living more than a hundred years by yourself, you finally open your heart to someone… and they’re taken away? The idea of it was enough to make him laugh, and now Mal would know a fraction of their pain upon realizing what he’d done to Baxter.
That was enough revelling for now, though he didn’t have to still be psychic to know something similar was on his wife’s mind. He squeezed her hand gently as they walked, turning to offer her a small smile. They rounded a corner, and Pierre leaned in to peck her cheek, then continued down the sidewalk. He would never take this from them. Mal didn’t scare them. They would continue walking down the street as though nothing could touch them, and they would not hide in shadows as he did.
Though, eventually Lena and Pierre would have to decide what their next plans were━if they were to stay in Mystic Falls and seek revenge again or simply leave━but there was time to figure it out. Evidently, the answer became clear (to Lena, at least) as they approached the town’s sole casino.
Hmph.
Their casinos would have never been reduced to this state. The boats required a certain amount of upkeep, but there were additional costs and dangers to having a floating business. This was stagnant, and the owners couldn’t even maintain it.
“We buy?” He repeated, looking at Lena incredulously. His eyes slowly moved from his wife and back to the structure, and he knew immediately that he couldn’t say no to her. “Well… let’s ‘ead inside.” Pierre began walking up to the big doors. It was too early for the place to be open yet, but that wasn’t a problem.
Without pulling his hand from Lena’s, Pierre used his free one to break the lock on the casino’s doors and push it open, shooting her a small smirk. “We will replace dzis lock anyway, yes?” Most things would need to go… but you had to invest in your business for it to become great, and decades of running their own had given them expansive knowledge in this sort of thing.
As they stepped inside, Pierre looked around the large main room slowly, checking over the various slot machines and tables. “Zee felt on zee tables still looks in good shape,” He hummed, inspecting them before looking at Lena again. “Mmm… but what would we call it? ‘Igh Stakes Society will simply not do,” Pierre grinned almost cheekily, like the rest of it wasn’t enough of an agreement by itself.

Her mind was spinning with ideas as soon as she spotted the building up for sale, although she’d always found it a little bizarre there was a casino in the middle of Mystic Falls. According to Pierre it attracted people too, usually supernaturals. They had their own bar where they could drink it, so why not somewhere to gamble their money away? Her eyes lit up when Pierre suggested they headed inside. She expected him to make some argument that they needed to focus on Mal, but they’d done all they could with Mal, for now. They weren’t finished with him, they’d only just begun. In the meantime Lena couldn’t sit at home all day doing nothing, waiting until another opportunity arose for them to attack Mal. There was only so much cleaning one person could do before they went insane. Plus, she’d never been the type of woman to be left at home cleaning whilst her husband goes out to make money. Nowadays no one batted an eyelid if the wife wasn’t at home all day, which Lena revelled in. She stood just behind Pierre as he snapped the lock off the door. “Oui. It looks rusty anyway.” Barely, the lock looked brand new but they needed something that couldn’t be snapped easily by a vampire. Her hands slipped out of Pierre’s as she stepped inside the building. There was a strong smell of must in the air, the place needed a deep clean, but it had the foundations. She glanced down at the tables, running her hand lightly over the felt. “Feels new… no need for us to replace.” She had no intention of pouring money into the place because this town wasn’t going to be their forever home. They’d been there for about five seconds and already the place was filled with bad memories. “Hmm…” High Stakes Society wasn’t a catchy name. She picked up a lone card off the table that had been left behind, “Queen of Hearts Casino?” She flashed the card Pierre to show the Queen of Hearts with a smile on her face, “First we buy the place then we work on the name.” Together they’d come up with a good idea, they always did. It was just one of the things on the long list of reasons why she loved her husband. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ THE PLACE WAS ALRIGHT. CLEARLY IT WAS still running even without someone at the top, but whoever had been there was letting the quality dwindle. That wouldn’t happen any longer━Pierre and Lena would get control, rebrand, and then start churning out profit, just as they’d always done.
He loved when she spoke French. Pierre glanced over his shoulder at his wife with a smile, and though she’d only said one word, he was gushing nevertheless.
Pierre hummed in agreement as they looked at the tables, then slowly moved toward the bar, turning to look at his wife, leaning back against it. He knocked on the sealed wood, finding nothing but fine craftsmanship beneath it. “Whoever left dzat card out will be zee first to lose zeir job.” He grumbled, pushing off the bar without much urgency. “Sure… but we should ‘ave some idea.” He puffed, moving back to Lena finally.
“‘Ow about Lierre… what is zat?” He stopped, hearing something strange, like hooves.
In a moment, there was a puff of green smoke, and a man on horseback trudged towards them. Pierre burst into action, darting to Lena with his enhanced speed, calling, “Mon cœur! Mon cœur!” As he went, desperate to save her from… whatever that thing was.

Excitement buzzed through her when they stepped inside, her eyes taking in every single detail of the casino. This could have been the perfect venture to help distract her from what happened with Baxter. They needed time to heal, together, and accept their son was a vampire. One who struggled with the bloodlust. Sitting in that apartment day in and day out was starting to irritate her anyway. They had executed their perfect plan with Mal, but now they needed some cooling off. Taking Krista from Mal felt better than killing him, if he even cared for her in the first place. Time would tell. Maybe Mal would come grovelling to the pair, desperate to get Krista’s memories back. She had tried teaching Pierre her native language when they first met, but it wasn’t easy when all the words sounded so damn similar. As for writing and reading? Impossible. French however was a lot easier for her to understand. Plus, she could listen to her husband speak French all day every day. The words rolled off his tongue so perfectly with his soothing accent. Lena turned to face Pierre as he spoke, “We have no slackers in our casino.” They were firm but fair bosses. It seemed the place already came with its own selection of staff too. “Lierre?” She let out a hearty laugh, “I—” Before she went on to express her hatred for the name the sound of horses running filled the air as the sky outside grew dark instantly. Suddenly a man appeared in the building, riding a horse and brandishing a gun. Was this another one of Mal’s creatures? The being pointed his gun directly at Lena and before Pierre could rush to grab his wife the trigger had already been pulled, sending a bullet flying into Lena’s chest. Seconds later she was gone. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE - the end!
