CROATOAN VIRUS PLOT

The Croatoan Virus was created years ago by Pestilence and originally caused infected humans to turn into murderous rabid creatures with various degrees of intelligence. Some were savage and mindless shells of the people they used to be and would rip a person limb from limb as soon as they got close enough while others became cruel and cunning monsters who liked to torture each victim in a different way before killing them.
Back then the virus was transmitted through blood contact but now just getting close enough to someone infected has been known to pass the infection on in some cases. Wes Maxfield and the Augustine Society managed to get their hands on the body of a human infected by the Croatoan virus the Winchesters faced years before and they have not only managed to unlock the secrets of the virus, they have managed to make it that much more deadly. Altered so that only supernaturals can be infected with the intention that once infected they will target and kill other supernaturals, the virus was tested in New Orleans but quickly mutated and it wasn't long before those infected were killing humans as well.

With a few infected supernaturals managing to slip through the cracks despite the safeguards that Wes and his team put in place, the virus has slowly but surely been spreading across the country and a few of those infected have found their way to Mystic Falls, even in their infected state drawn to the town by the Nemeton created by Grey Maddox and Destiny Baccari despite the fact that it is still in its infancy.
Fortunately a solution has been found, albeit a temporary one, in the form of phoenix stones. When someone infected is stabbed by a weapon set with one of these stones they will be drawn into the phoenix stone and will be kept there until a cure is found. Some supernaturals find themselves once they are in the realm inside the phoenix stone but others remain rabid resulting in a fight for survival like none the world has ever known. The hunter Braeden has brought these stones to Mystic Falls in the hope of finding others who will help her in her mission of saving as many of those infected as possible.
Please note: The phoenix stones have been linked so those stabbed with a weapon set with one will find themselves in the same realm regardless of who sent them there rather than individual ones.
HOW IT WORKS
Infected supernaturals have made their way to Mystic Falls. They look just like anyone else but they have the ability to infect other supernaturals if they get close enough and the virus makes them want to kill any supernaturals around them although they have also been known to attack humans. There may be some supernaturals who are immune to the virus, not enough is known about it for sure yet, but what is known is that it spreads and the only way to stop those infected is by either trapping them in the phoenix stone or killing them.
Once infected, characters may try to fight the virus and they may succeed for a while but sooner or later it will take over. There will be people working on a cure so when characters are trapped in the phoenix stone it won't be permanent, some can be pulled out to test a potential cure but to start with it will be trial and error which means there could be some being pulled out of the phoenix stone, possibly escaping and being trapped again.
This is another plot that is intended to get you doing threads you wouldn't otherwise be able to do and when it comes to being trapped in the phoenix stone, think of it like purgatory from Supernatural or the prison world where Malivore was trapped in Legacies. Monsters who aren't in control and have been consumed by the virus will be roaming around and will be trying to kill anyone in sight.
