It was like a little light bulb had illuminated in his mind one evening when he remembered there was a counterpart of his wedding ring. Well, he knew there was a second ring, but his mind never came up with the idea that it could also be used as a daylight ring. Although Hector’s complaining may have prompted the idea. Almost every single day the man was asking Lawrence when he was going to get himself another daylight ring because he couldn’t just work night shifts forever. He needed an employee who could go outside without frazzling. Lawrence didn’t argue with Hector about it either. The word was final. Lawrence needed a new daylight ring. He was never a fan of asking people for favours, but without magic he had no choice but to ask Teddy to help him. He dug out the few belongings he kept from his human days, which included a small brooch that belonged to Grace. It was a box that was rarely opened, covered in dust at the top of his wardrobe. As soon as he opened the box he was met with a photograph of his family. Young innocent looking Phoebe and Lawrence looking back at him, standing alongside his mom who was wearing a warm smile and his dad who was just about smiling, but it was probably forced. Two years after that photo was taken they would be forcing their son to leave. He tossed the photo back in the box, unable to stare at it for a minute longer. The spell threw up a location within seconds. He was expecting to find the ring had travelled across America, but it was still in Elk Valley, within the local cemetery. Brilliant. He was prepared to go alone, but Teddy insisted he would join Lawrence, practically ready with his shovel. He had a valid point too, Lawrence had never dug up a body. He dreaded to think what condition Grace would be in after a few decades, but he needed that ring. Elk Valley wasn’t a few hours drive away, so the next time Hector mentioned the daylight ring Lawrence threw this into conversation. It wasn’t the end of it though. Hector told him he would fly the two of them there, promising to deliver them in one piece. He didn’t have a plane full of immortals like their trip to London, so Hector actually took that into consideration before shooting them a thousand miles in the sky. Being back in his hometown didn’t fill him with any sense of nostalgia. He wasn’t burning to go and see what remained of his childhood home, or look at the river banks where he and Phoebe used to play. Their mission was to dig up the body, get the ring and leave the place behind, forever. “This is kind of fucked, eh? Digging up my ex-fiancee for a ring.” He slammed his shovel into the ground, again. It was a mixture of relief and sadness to find out Grace was buried alone. If they looked hard enough they’d find Lawrence and Phoebe’s headstones. Then he felt his shovel hit something hard, “I think we’ve struck gold.” He was dreading unearthing the coffin. He looked over at his best friend, “She’s gonna be bones, right?” He was looking to Teddy for some kind of reassurance that they weren’t about to peer into a box full of maggots and a rotting corpse, although his nose would have scented that long before they hit the coffin. ━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY WAS HAPPY TO HELP LAWRENCE IN ANY WAY he could. It was helpful to have someone home in the mornings to watch Julian if Teddy ever got home late from work, but that wasn’t Lawrence’s job, and no person should ever have to live only in the nighttime━vampire or not.
Especially because it wasn’t his fault that he’d lost his ring. Lawrence was tricked, and Teddy knew how awful that could be. So, with Julian’s help depositing some magic into an amulet, Teddy was able to perform a locator spell for Lawrence’s other ring. His ring’s mate━the one meant for Lawrence’s fiancee. It was still in Elk Valley where he’d left her━left all of them. Teddy couldn’t imagine what it would be like to return to his coven after they were all dead. Would any descendants of Lawrence’s coven still be there, or would they have been pushed out by modern developments? It still seemed quite rural when Teddy had researched it, but he supposed it would be a long shot if anybody was left.
Apparently, Lawrence was under the impression he’d do the rest of this alone. Well, he wouldn’t. Teddy was more than happy to tag along (if he could find a babysitter), and, also, he knew graves; he knew what it was like to dig them up. He would be more than necessary on Lawrence’s mission━even if it was only for moral support.
Plus, someone would need to be there to hold Teddy’s hand during his first flight. It was somehow worse that it was flown by Hector, as Teddy didn’t have the tried-and-true corporations of a big airline to fall back on. It was just… different. He couldn’t really come up with a good explanation as to why he felt that way, only that he did.
Regardless, they made it to British Columbia in one piece, and Teddy climbed off wearing only a backpack and holding a shovel. It was dark outside, but he was used to that. When they approached the grave, he kept quiet (out of respect), and took a small, battery-operated lantern out of his bag, then opened it and put it to the side. Usually, he liked wearing his headlamp best, but it would be hard to work with someone else while using it.
Once they were approximately six feet in, the lantern was just about the only thing illuminating their work━the moon helped, too, but Teddy was working mostly on muscle memory. “A little bit.” Teddy said sheepishly, glancing up at Lawrence with a half grin. “But it’s necessary.” Though he was sure Lawrence could’ve saved his pennies and bought a lapis lazuli ring in Mystic Falls…
Teddy cringed when the shovel tinged off of something hard. The potential repercussions of damaging the outside of someone’s coffin had been ingrained in him, but he realized that nobody would be coming after them for this. Lawrence’s comment, however, was a little morbid.
“She won’t even be that.” Teddy answered, clearing some space to the side for them to stand. Once he was able to rest his shovel out of the way, he brushed off the remaining dirt from on top of the coffin and slipped his fingers into the grooves to pull it open. All that was left was dust. And…
Teddy reached in━trying to save Lawrence the trouble and potential heartache/heebie-jeebies━and plucked the ring from amongst what remained of her bones. There weren’t any threads left behind, either, though that was to be expected━he didn’t think any coven a century ago had nylon.
“Here.” They’d have to do the spell later, when the sun came up, but Teddy didn’t want to be responsible for the ring until then. Though, considering Lawrence’s track record, perhaps he should’ve been. Nonetheless, he dropped the ring onto Lawrence’s palm and slowly closed the coffin.
“I know it isn’t… maybe it’s not the right time to talk about this,” He began, almost nervously, “But maybe… in the daytime, after I’ve finished your ring, you could show me around?” Teddy’s smile grew, all bright and hopeful. “I want to see where you grew up. If that’s okay.” If not━if it was too painful for Lawrence━then he’d understand. Teddy wasn’t sure how he’d feel showing Lawrence the place where he grew up, but it hadn’t been nearly as long.

Teddy was far more respectful to the dead than Lawrence. He was carefully weaving between the headstones whereas Lawrence was just walking straight over the graves trying not to look at the headstones in case he spotted someone he knew. Most of them were bare, with no fresh flowers. Grace’s was no exception, with moss covering half of the headstone and her name had started to fade away. Digging up his ex-fiance's body was the quickest way to secure himself another ring. He never thought he’d find himself in Elk Valley, slamming a shovel into the ground with his best friend for the sake of a daylight ring. Just another bonding experience for the pair. He was starting to think someone had partook in a bit of grave robbing until his shovel hit something solid. Thankfully Teddy was the one to clear off the dirt and wedge his fingers under the lid to pop it open. Lawrence peeked inside the coffin, the light illuminating the inside. There was hardly anything left. She had gone from being a human being to nothing. “It’s kind of sad.” He muttered as he studied the inside for remnants of Grace. The ring lay amongst it all. He watched as Teddy reached down to pick it up. “Thanks.” He took the ring and slid it into his jean pocket, patting it carefully through fabric to double check it was there as Teddy slid the lid back onto the coffin, closing Grace away forever. He was keen to kick the dirt back into the hole and head back to Mystic Falls, but Teddy wanted to see more of Elk Valley. The first answer that spring to mind was no because the tour would be bleak and depressing. “Yeah, sure. We can have a little vacation in BC.” He jumped out of the coffin, spinning around to offer his hand to Teddy, “I guess I could show you mine and Phoebe’s grave whilst we're here?” It was a little pointless having an empty coffin buried in the family crypt, but his parents had to do something to convince the coven their children had died. Once the dirt had been thrown back into place he scanned his surroundings for a moment. “Wait a minute.” Within a second he was back with a single flower he’d stolen from another grave. “Sorry for disrupting your sleep.” He carefully placed the flower down next to Grace’s headstone before doing the sign of the cross. The closer they drew to the crypt the more uneasy he felt. The door was locked with a rusty padlock, with moss growing up the front of it. He tugged harshly at the lock and it snapped with ease. As he pulled the door open it made a loud creak, causing Lawrence to shudder a little. The inside was dark, with some light spilling in from outside, but mainly it was illuminated by Teddy’s torch. “They thought our bloodline would go on for centuries.” He gestured to the many empty spaces, reserved for coffins. The only ones that were inside were his grandparents, parents and his and Phoebe’s. His eyes bounced around the room as he studied the engraving on each headstone, but his heart dropped when he spotted his mom’s. “Pass the torch, please.” He took the torch from Teddy before shining it over his mom’s name. “Jesus Murphy… it’s mom… looks like she died a few months after Phoebe was turned.” It stabbed him straight through the heart realising his mom didn’t grow old like he’d always imagined, taking a deep breath as he tried to ignore the sadness flooding his body. A few tears forced their way though, but he quickly wiped them away hoping Teddy didn’t notice. TEDDY AARONSON

━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY UNDERSTOOD THAT THIS WOULD BE HARD for Lawrence, and he knew what it was like to have to leave someone behind. He often wondered what they’d done with Octavia’s body━he supposed they gave her a burial ritual and made a martyr out of her. Even though they’d all come after her in the end, it still pained Teddy to think of her parents doubled over in pain, mourning the loss of their child. He’d never meant to do that. They’d pushed her away, forced his hand in the end, but he was supposed to leave with her. She was supposed to be safe with him.
It’d been different with Lawrence’s fiancée━the fact that they’d never gotten married, for starters━but Teddy knew it all the same. As they closed up the coffin and began filling the hole again, he smiled softly at Lawrence and nodded curtly. “Sure.” Teddy agreed. It was morbid, perhaps, to see the graves of his loved one (and said loved one’s sister), but there was nothing there, and it was still a part of their history.
As soon as all the dirt was back on the grave (and levelled to Teddy’s liking), he wiped his hands on his pants and picked up his shovel, ready to go to the next grave, but stopped when Lawerence asked for a moment. He watched as his best friend deposited a flower on his ex-fiancée's grave and apologized to her, a tiny smile on his face.
Teddy carried his shovel and electric lantern to the next spot, which turned out to be a crypt instead of a regular grave, and cringed as Lawrence broke the lock. That was just inviting trouble, but he supposed it belonged to Lawrence, so he could do with it what he liked. Teddy rested his shovel on the wall outside before going in.
The moment they stepped inside, he felt the power like a tingling sensation all over his body. They’d been skilled when they were alive, it seemed, and something lingered here with them. If Lawrence still had the ability, Teddy imagined that casting a spell here would give him plenty of power.
His eyes flicked to Lawrence’s face before drifting across the headstones, and all the names that were carved into them. Teddy only nodded, not even sure if Lawrence could see him━it didn’t seem like the type of thing that needed a response. He knew, though, that his parents thought that of his own bloodline. And it would, of course━Teddy had younger sisters who would keep it going, and the rest of the coven would accept the new leaders as they came, forgiving his parents for their “first-born mistake” until Teddy’s story became nothing more than a legend within their coven.
Lawrence’s parents, however, had no back-up plan to their back-up plan, which, he assumed, was Phoebe. These spaces would be empty forever.
“It’s more of a lantern.” He said quietly, knowing that a torch’s fire would give them a warmer━but less bright━light. And also a reminder that it would run out of batteries eventually. Teddy handed it over anyways, holding it around the light part so that Lawrence could grab the metal handles on the top. Perhaps he shouldn’t have said anything━it didn’t really matter.
Teddy leaned closer as Lawrence pointed out the date on his mother’s headstone, and frowned deeply after comparing it with Phoebe’s. Yep, Lawrence was right━perhaps the grief took her, whether it was natural or unnatural. Either way, he supposed Lawrence might have mixed feelings about it. He likely envisioned an ending for his parents that looked different from this, and even though they’d cast their children away for something they couldn’t control, she was still his mother. Teddy wasn’t sure he could relate, but he rubbed Lawrence’s back anyway, frowning as he watched his best friend shed tears. He wished he could do something to help, but the only thing that came to mind was a hug, so that was what he did. He pulled Lawrence in and squeezed him lightly, hoping it would ease some of his sadness.
“There’s… power in here.” He said softly, slowly pulling away to look at the headstones of Lawrence’s parents and grandparents. “I could try to do a spell to connect with them… if you’d like.” He wasn’t sure if that was something Lawrence would want, but Teddy thought he’d offer anyway. Lawrence could always just say no.

Lawrence’s parents were probably watching him from the other side as he ripped the lock off their family crypt, his dad cursing at him for daring to come back to Elk Valley. He’d like to think his mom was at least pleased to see him. He survived all these years, despite their concerns their son wasn’t going to last more than a few years away from home. Neither of them would have been proud of what he’d done since leaving Elk Valley though. It was a different story with Phoebe though, she’d actually tried to do something meaningful with her eternal existence. Meanwhile Lawrence killed a bunch of people and found himself staring into an empty bottle of whiskey most weekends. Phoebe could take the golden child award since Lawrence had been carrying it his entire human life. The award had been forced into his hands by his dad though, pouring all his time into Lawrence because of his future role in the coven. Their mom however split her love between the pair, they were both equally special to her. It could have been a reason to explain her premature death after Phoebe left. She’d lost both her children because her husband kicked them out. Along with the sadness that overcame him there was anger brewing too, directing toward his dad. His mom begged and begged for him to let Lawrence stay. They could have worked something out with the coven. He could have been raised surrounded by witches and warlocks, rather than trying to figure it out on his own and ultimately switching it all off. The question sprung into his mind immediately. Did she choose to end her life? Lawrence turned to face Teddy, holding the lantern up to illuminate the space between them. There were a thousand things he’d love to say to his parents. It would mainly be hurling abuse at his dad about what a piece of shit he was for disowning his children. “I think it’s best I speak to Phoebe first… if we do contact them she’ll wanna be here.” They could take it in turns to berate their dad, if he decided to connect with them. Ultimately he wanted to speak to his mom though even though there was a chance he could break him. “They’re probably here anyway… listening and watching us.” His gaze bounced around the crypt, as if he was trying to spot them, “Thanks anyway.” They’d unearthed enough old trauma for the day, they didn’t need to add to it by contacting his parents, even though he desperately wanted to speak to his mom. He was worried if she started to apologise for everything he’d find himself forgiving her. He’d needed Phoebe alongside him to stop that from happening. His deep thoughts were disturbed by his buzzing cell phone. He pulled it out of his pocket with his free hand, answering the call and pressing his phone to his ear. “Hector… yeah we’re nearly done we’re just… right, okay. Yeah we’re heading back now.” He ended the call, letting out a sigh, “Hector is threatening to leave us here if we don’t hurry up.” Lawrence would be toast within a few hours anyway. He glanced at his parents grave for the last time, mainly his mom’s, before leaving the crypt. TEDDY AARONSON - the end!
