She gave into the peer pressure from Lex and invested in a new phone because she actually had some element of disposable income for the first time in her life. She quickly fell into a rabbit hole though downloading all the apps on the charts in the app store, in fact she’d developed a mild addiction to Candy Crush. That wasn’t the only thing she got addicted to though. When she first opened Tinder it was like she had been transported into another world. All these single men popping up on her feed and some of them were sooo hot. She asked Lex to help her pick some pictures to upload onto her profile, but he dismissed her. According to him, dating apps were lame and for men who were a little too close to children but as always Winter told him to shut up and carried on swiping on Tinder until there were no more men in the area. She didn’t even know it was possible to exhaust all the options, but she managed to do so quite quickly so she increased the radius a little bit more picking up more potential men in the area. It was just a game to her though. She had no intention of meeting the men who had matched her because of the whole predicting death situation. There were a few messages, but no one really caught her attention anyway. It was basic chat up lines and men clearly looking for one thing. Winter was the last person to be dishing out that kind of service. She almost deleted the app until Samuel jumped to the top of her messages and finally it was someone who knew how to hold a damn conversation. Then he asked to meet her, sending Winter into a mild panic but she eventually said yes. Lex made some stupid comment about Samuel being an eighty year old with twelve cats and no teeth, but Winter had spoken to him over the phone. He certainly didn’t sound like an eighty year old man with no teeth, instead he sounded sweet, telling her he was looking forward to meeting her in Campbells Bar that weekend, leaving Winter with a stupid grin on her face after the phone call had ended. Winter was so excited that she’d picked out a number of outfit options, consulting Penny about every single one of them. Her circle of female friends was somewhat lacking, so Penny had pulled the short straw, having to listen to Winter gushing about Samuel but also she was forced to look through various outfit choices. She picked the last one, but Winter was convinced she’d only done that because it was the last picture on the screen, but whatever. Lex didn’t really say much when she asked if she looked okay before heading out for her date, but nothing could kill her ridiculously good mood. She arrived at Campbell's Bar five minutes before they were due to meet, but seven came and went. She felt her mood deflate with each passing minute until it was half seven and she decided to call Samuel. The call wouldn’t connect though, so she tried again and again. Nothing. Then her text message bounced back as undelivered, so she went onto Tinder to find he had unmatched her. Nonetheless she carried on waiting outside Campbell’s bar until it reached half eight and she accepted that he wasn’t turning up. The anger was building inside of her as her eyes started to prickly. She practically stormed back to the hotel, throwing the door to their room open and slamming it closed behind her. “Fuck this stupid fucking app.” Winter launched her phone onto the bed with such force it bounced off the mattress and hit the wall. “Wasted my fucking time.” All that time she had spent getting ready was pointless now. ━ one click and you are overwritten ━ LEX DIDN’T DO IT TO BE MEAN (FOR ONCE); HE WAS just lookin’ out for her. He didn’t think Winter would fuckin’ cry over it. Jesus, chicks were so touchy.
Okay, so he fucked up her date. But, like, Winter was prancing around fucking non-stop talking about some guy she met on a dating app for p-dos (not actually, but that’s the only kinda dudes on there), or, was, like, gonna meet. And Lex totally had a funny feeling right off the bat. Call it a dope sense of intuition or something. It was not anything else. At all. He was just trynna look out for her ‘cause, yeah, he didn’t, like, hate her or anything. They’d probs be friends━y’know, if Lex actually had any of those.
Anyway, in the end, he was right (obviously). The guy was a creep. No, not a loves-little-kids kinda creep, but a has-a-girlfriend kinda creep. Which, y’know, wasn’t as bad, but was still shitty. And he didn’t wanna see Winter wasting her time with this guy just to get upset at the end of it all, so he sent him a couple messages.
Weelllllll, actually, he went into the dude’s computer and flooded it with blackmail, sayin’ he would leak the guy’s personal info and ruin his relationship with his girlfriend if he went on the date with Winter. Actually, if he messaged Winter at all.
So, y’know, that’s why she was all sad and shit. But Lex figured he’d done something good. He just didn’t know why he felt kinda weird, like, in his gut. As if he had a conscience or some shit. He didn’t feel this way when she’d left; he was actually kinda proud of himself. And Winter had looked really good, but what was the point of gassing her up if there wasn’t actually a date to get to?
He sat up straighter as she came storming into the hotel room and pulled the half-eaten sour key from his mouth, quickly exiting out of the security footage window on his laptop. Yeah, he was watching the cameras at Campbell’s, aight? He wanted a leg up in case this douche actually had the balls to show up. And, well, if he decided to fight back and do something to Winter, then Lex was ready for that, too.
Lex cringed as her phone bounced and hit the wall, not because of the potential bill from the manager (he could cover it no problemo), but as if the phone was an extension of him. “He a loser like I said he’d be?” He smirked, then popped the rest of the sour key in his mouth to free up his hand. Lex used it to lift the plastic container of them in a silent offering to Winter. “Seriously, when am I ever wrong? He say somethin’ gross? Cop a feel? Get sad when he saw your ID… ‘cause he realized you were legal?” He felt a little stab in his chest around the pride and relief, but ignored it. Nobody had time for that dumbass shit.

There was a tiny part of her that was craving a relationship by now or even just casual dating. She’d closed off that option for so long that it was starting to bring her down a little. Sometimes she’d spot cute couples in the museum on a date, holding hands and laughing about something only they found funny. Winter wanted that, but she couldn’t wrap her hands around someone else’s. She couldn’t even take a dollar note from someone without foreseeing his death. She didn’t want to die alone like her dad had. Loved by no one, not even his own daughter. The church was practically empty at his funeral, with Winter on the front row and few random drinking friends who probably drank themselves into oblivion afterwards to celebrate Seth’s life. It was just an excuse to drink though. Meanwhile Winter jumped into her car and left town. Being stood up was like a whole new level of embarrassment that she’d never experienced before. This boy had decided that she wasn’t worth meeting, which made her feel awful. None of it made sense and Winter spent the walk back to the hotel trying to figure out where she’d gone wrong. Did she come across a little keen in her last message? Had he matched with someone better? Whatever the reason was, it left her biting back the tears. She was ready to let them out once she reached her room, but Lex was in there. No fucking way was she letting Lex see her cry, especially over a boy. She’d never hear the end of it. The phone hit the floor with a thud and Winter rushed over to pick it up, remembering that she couldn't afford to buy a new phone like Lex. The screen was still in one piece. “Yeah.” She muttered as she sat down on the edge of her bed facing Lex. Was he fucking smirking? “This isn’t funny!” There was absolutely nothing funny about the situation. It was crushing her and he was sitting there offering her sour keys. However, she still reached forward and picked one out of the container. “No none of that.” Her eyes were focused on the sourkey in hands as she awkwardly played with it instead of popping it into her mouth. “He didn’t show up.” She muttered quietly as her voice began to break with emotion, refusing to take her eyes off the chewy sweet to look at Lex because she could feel the tears burning her eyes. She swallowed harshly, turning the key in her hands, “I waited but he never showed up.” One tear managed to escape, dropping down onto her hands. LEX CAMERON

━ one click and you are overwritten ━ LEX WAS ALL JOKES AND SHIT-EATING GRINS until Winter snapped at him. He paused for a second, that feeling in his gut intensifying, before his smile returned. Okay, yeah, it sucked that Winter was feelin’ bad, but how much worse would she heel if she started dating that douche only to find out he had a girlfriend after catching feelings? Lex was helpin’ her out. Bein’ a good bro… or whatever.
Winter took a sour key, though, so he figured they were alright. Lex placed them near the edge of the bed, still in arm's reach for both of them━just in case she wanted another. Lex chewed on the one still in his mouth, not bothering to apologize, just watching her.
Usually, displays of emotion made him uncomfortable, but as Winter got more and more upset, he just… felt shitty. Like he’d swallowed a bunch of rocks and they were sitting at the bottom of his stomach, weighty and taking up too much space.
When she looked at him, Lex stared back like a deer caught in the headlights. “Oh,” He mumbled, ‘cause he felt like he had to say something. “Um…” He watched her start to cry, one tear dropping onto her sour key, which was kinda gross. “That really sucks.” Lex added, ‘cause what else was he gonna say? ‘I saved you the trouble’? Well, not exactly that, but…
“Maybe… y’know, maybe it’s better, you feel me? ‘Cause maybe he was a weirdo.” Lex ate another sour key, biting the circle part almost in slow motion. “Like, a weirdo with a girlfriend. And he figured it was better to bail than get his ass kicked.” Lex took a beat, tossing the rest of the candy in his mouth. “Uh, by his girlfriend, I mean. You wanna watch a movie? I got a grocery delivery comin’, it’s fulla snacks and shit.” ‘Cause what else did he eat? He changed the subject as fast as possible, hoping he could distract her with his offer. He stuffed another sour key in his mouth.

It did suck. It sucked so fucking hard. She could feel the bruise on her self esteem already forming, it had taken a huge beating. Men were trashed and she hated them all. Well, not all of them, Lex was okay, but all the other men could go to hell. She picked the key up, which was now damp with tears and placed it in her mouth. She couldn't understand why he constantly ate the candy, they were too tangy and sour. It felt like it was ripping her mouth open as she chewed on it, but it was something to focus on rather than crying. But, Samuel didn’t seem like a weirdo. He seemed very normal, which is why she agreed to meet up with him. His messages weren’t suggesting he just wanted to bed her. Foolishly she hoped it was something more than that, but maybe that was her problem. None of it mattered anymore because he didn’t show up. On the walk home she looked through their messages, furiously analysing every single one of them to see if she said something weird. If she hadn’t felt so insecure she would have asked Lex to read over them, but she wasn’t mentally prepared for a roasting from him. Snacks and a movie sounded good though, although it wouldn’t have hurt Lex to order a vegetable every now and then. Instead more sour keys were about to be delivered. She sniffled lightly, wiping the tears away. “Wait, a girlfriend? Why would he have a girlfriend?” She’d only spoken to Samuel via Tinder. He claimed he didn't have any social media accounts and of course Winter believed him. “Do you know something Lex?” Her eyes narrowed slightly as she studied him. He was far too quick to guess her date had gone badly as soon as she walked into the room. LEX CAMERON

━ one click and you are overwritten ━ LEX DEFS THOUGHT HE FUCKIN’ GOT AWAY WITH IT. He shoulda known. He wasn’t good with chicks, though━didn’t have all the experience to realize that they fuckin’ knew everryttthinggg. Could figure out everrrrythingg. This was why Will was divorced. Chicks were difficult and annoying and, clearly, Zoey was too smart for a Nazi-Squashing-Art-Stealing Thief like him.
Aaaanyway. Bashing Will wouldn’t get him outta this sitch. Nothing would━‘cept for maybe more lying. But… aaah, nah━if he pissed her off enough, Winter would probs just read him or some shit. Force the truth outta him.
It didn’t mean he wouldn’t at least try, though. If only for a second. “Whaaat? Nah, I meant it, like, figuratively.” He laughed sheepishly, giving Winter the same sort of smile. Guilty as fuck. After a moment, he put his phone down and huffed, “Okay, yeah, dude, I checked him out. You were gonna meet some random guy off the internet, who was probs a p-do, and I wanted to make sure you didn’t get, like, kidnapped or some shit.” Hard to insist he didn’t care now, but fuck it, whatever. Girls liked that shit.
Not that Winter was a girl or anything. Or even a girl he was trynna impress.
“But, yeah, he had a girlfriend. Like, long term. Dude was obvs a scumbag, so why would you wanna even go on a date with him, y’know? I basically saved ya the trouble.” Except it didn’t feel like that. It felt shitty. Right in his fucking guts. Lex stuffed a few more sour keys into his mouth to try to offset the feeling.

Lex was lying through his teeth, it was so fucking obvious. If he’d have cleared all this with Winter before she went on the date she might have been okay with it, but not now. Not after she felt so humiliated and embarrassed about being stood up and Lex has partially caused it. “Well, if he was a p-do why the fuck would he kidnap me? I’m in the wrong damn age bracket!” It just wasn’t a good enough reason for him to go snooping around in her date's personal information. Maybe after she’d calmed down she’d see that Lex was trying to do a good thing for her, but his actions weren’t landing well with Winter especially when the whole thing could have been avoided by him speaking to her before she went. All the anger and sadness which had been building up inside of her since she left the bar was now being projected onto Lex. Winter stood up off the bed, throwing her handful of sour keys at Lex. “No Lex. You didn’t save me from shit. You humiliated me! You knew all this before I left and you still let me go.” There was no point letting a good outfit go to waste. She bit back the tears, refusing to ruin her makeup. Winter stormed off towards the door, grabbing the handle furiously before ripping the door open. She quickly cast her attention back to Lex, “I use my good fucking setting spray for this date!” Not that it meant anything to him, he probably didn’t even know what setting spray was. Winter left the hotel room, storming off down the corridor like an angry child. LEX CAMERON - the end!
