She needed a drink urgently, not that the alcohol would make any difference to the nerves that were swirling inside her. Clearly, the worst thing about being a werewolf was snapping your bones every month but having to polish off copious bottles of alcohol to feel tipsy was up there as well. It sucked balls but still she needed a stiff drink after her evening with Krista. Kitty had spent the evening tossing and turning in bed as a zillion thoughts ran through her head. Has Krista been compelled? Should she tell Krista that she might have been compelled? Was it better this way? Did Mal do this? She had been praying for the day Krista and Mal split up, even if it did mean she’d have to deal with Krista’s heartbreak for the foreseeable future, but this didn’t seem right. Now she felt like she was holding this massive secret and she needed to tell someone. At first she was going to run to Phoebe, but she was currently drowning in college work and would murder Kitty for disturbing her. Kitty couldn’t bounce from a broken neck. She could have called her sisters but they would have started to panic that she was associated with vampires, but they killed people and shit. She didn’t have the patience to sit down and explain to them that not all vampires were like that and only Mal was one of those bad vampires who bite their girlfriends and let them walk around campus with scabs on their necks. So she rushed down to The Ruby Slipper. Kit probably wouldn’t want to hear all about the teenage drama, but she needed someone to tell her what to do and Kit was like an outside person. Plus he was older so he had all that life experience behind him so he would know what to do. Kitty walked into the bar five minutes after it opened. There was no bouncer on the door and the music hadn’t even started blaring yet. The place looked empty, but Kit was standing behind the bar. “Dude.” She pulled herself up on the bar stool before leaning on the bar, “I need your advice. It’s about Krista… y’know Krista right? The blonde girl, can’t handle her liquor, looks sweet as hell… anyway. She has this boyfriend who’s one of them.” She nodded towards the door that led downstairs, to where the vampires apparently hung out. “He bites her… and not the good kind. Anyway. I think someone’s compelled her to forget him… and do I tell her? Or just carry on living our life free of that asshole?” She took a deep breath in. Damn it felt good to get that off her chest. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ KIT FELT LIKE SOME SOAPY, SCUMMY WATER circling a drain. He’d been in this position before, but he’d never been able to see it like he was now. Kit felt like he was hovering over his own body━and wasn’t that funny, huh? Exactly like Kace usedta be━watching everything go to shit without the ability to stop it.
Katja was gone, and he felt even more lonely than before, and no matter what he snorted, inhaled or washed down with a beer, the feeling never passed. It was worse than her week away, though at the time he thought the pain would never end. Now he knew how much worse it could get.
He was relatively sober for the beginning of his shift, which was unfortunate, but Kit was on his fourth beer, so he was still actively working on that. Pre-opening prep had been easy━especially now that Ayla, the glass-shattering-butter-fingers, was gone━and everyone completed the jobs he ordered them to do, so he had confidence that he’d be able to slip off to the bathrooms at some point.
It was a weekday, but still, nobody was ever here at opening. Sometimes sad, lonely old dudes traipsed in to sit at the bar until it started to fill up, but Kitty wasn’t one of them. His brows raised as he watched her come directly to him, a tiny smile playing on his lips. He liked Kitty. She came around when he was… well, sorta in the same shitty state he was now, and gave him a responsibility he didn’t want, but needed. She was part of the reason he’d found a better path, and now her presence was even more welcome. Kitty was kinda part of his unofficial pack, y’know, if they had someone fit to lead them.
“Dude.” He repeated her “greeting” with a grin, and put together her regular drink as she spoke. Yeah, he knew Krista, the chick who’d come with Kitty a few times and looked extremely out of place. Well, except for the bite marks on her neck.
His eyes flicked to the door she indicated, though he would’ve known what she meant without it. Krista wasn’t here enough for him to see a pattern, but that meant the scabs weren’t just a one-off. She had one of those bloodsuckers on her all of the time.
He knew he was supposed to hate vampires. But, vampires were also supposed to hate him, meanwhile he and Hector had a great professional relationship. Lawrence was annoying, but he wasn’t an awful person━Remzi was probably the only vampire Kit actively hated. It sounded like Krista didn’t have a good one, though━if they even existed.
“Damn,” He puffed, “That’s a lotta shit you got goin’ on.” And it was nice to focus on someone else’s problems for a change. “Well, I don’t wanna tell ya to lie,” Kit frowned, battling with what he knew was right, even if he hadn’t been following it for a while now. “But is she honestly better without him, or do you just think he’s an asshole? Why’d she stay with ‘im so long if he’s so bad?” He asked, because he had to know to deduce the best course of action for Kitty, but also to make her think about what she was gonna do next.

No one told her werewolves were supposed to have a little crew of other werewolves. She’d just been cruising around on her own until she met Kit, who told her everything she needed to know. After that she found herself turning to him in her time of need, whether he liked it or not. He’d certainly grown into the role though and didn’t sigh as much when she rushed to him with a problem. But this was a big problem and she needed to unload it off on Kit because she was starting to think she was the only person noticing Krista’s sudden memory loss. It had considered the theory that maybe Krista had experienced some kind of psychotic break and her brain had forced her to forget about that asshole. But compulsion was the most likely theory, even though Krista having a psychotic break wasn’t completely off the table. One thing was for sure though, her best friend needed a fucking threapist. Kitty didn’t want to be forced into this situation, where she had to weigh up what option was best for Krista because truthfully she had no clue what to do. Pre-compulsion Krista would have made Kitty swear on Jesus’ life that she would help her remember Mal if anything like this were to happen but Kitty didn’t want her to remember this dude. Now Krista seemed so blissful and happy, so what was the point of changing that? “I mean…” Her voice trailed off for a moment as she considered Kit’s question, “I hate him, there’s no denying that, but he’s no good for her. For starters he’s like a zillion years old so lowkey predatory behaviour but also he banged some professor at our college and filmed the whole thing… also, he tried to compel me once so he could bite me… so if he tried to do that to me he must be biting other bitches too… which Krista would label as cheating.” Krista would probably count liking another girl’s Instagram post as cheating. It hurt her having to tell Krista what happened with Mal, but she needed to know her boyfriend wasn’t keeping his fangs to himself. “I don’t know why she stayed with him.” She let out a loud sigh, “Krista probably thought it was super cool that her boyfriend was a vampire.” Like she was living out a fantasy life where she could live forever with her boyfriend. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ KIT DIDN’T REALLY KNOW KRISTA, BUT he’d seen her (or heard stories from Kitty) enough to know she was a little nutbar. Cute, but trouble, and either this vampire hadn’t gotten any smarter in his old age, or he found something appealing in her craziness. Kit had never seen the draw.
Kitty wasn’t jumping to respond, which Kit appreciated. He wouldn’t have agreed to train her if she was an idiot, and this only proved she had a good head on her shoulders.
He scoffed at her “predatory behaviour” comment, then poured the last of her drink and set it in front of her. Kit froze when she mentioned the professor, though, his eyes darting to Kitty’s. “That was him? Krista’s boyfriend?” Admittedly, he hadn’t paid attention to the dude. And, yeah, when Frank told him about a coworker’s tape getting leaked, he felt bad for the chick. Didn’t stop his curiosity from gettin’ the better of him, though.
“First of all, I don’t think the age thing counts for them. Plus, if you were a zillion years old, wouldn’t you want somethin’ young and sweet to suck on?” It was kinda gross to think about, but Kit could understand, and he didn’t bother to mince his words. “Okay, wait.” Kit put both hands on the bar and leaned towards her, “So, he real cheats on ‘er and fake cheats, tried to feed off ‘er best friend… and she stays with ‘im? She knows ‘bout all this stuff, right?’ Along with all that, dating a vampire just seemed stupid and fuckin’ dangerous. Krista had her whole life in front of her, and she was wastin’ it on a dead guy.
Kit sighed heavily, leaning back a bit as he considered the situation, his arms folding over his chest. “Okay… so, he’s shitty to ‘er, but are we gonna call it abusive? I guess she lets ‘im feed on ‘er, but… damn, I guess it’s her choice.” He puffed, thinking about Frank. It was hard, ‘cause he knew they’d never get into this situation, but would he tell Frank if he mysteriously forgot someone that was awful for him? Or━thinkin’ about chicks he knew other than Katja━would he tell his little sister? No fuckin’ way. “Yeah, I dunno, normally I’d say don’t get involved, but she’s gotta be better off without ‘im. She’s too young to throw away ‘er life for some asshole like that. And, yeah, she seems a little crazy, so maybe it’s a give-and-take thing, but she’s still got time t’grow up. I wouldn’t tell ‘er.” The problem was keeping him away. “He even wanna get back with ‘er? Has ‘e been ‘round or anythin’?” Kit would’ve considered himself free and booked it, but obviously this guy had a thing for self sabotage.

Perhaps Kitty should have been one of those girls who vetted their best friend’s boyfriend ruthlessly to make sure they’re good enough, but she trusted Krista to pick a good dude. That was arguably a mistake looking back on the situation now. She should have insisted on meeting Mal sooner, brought him in for a grilling like her grandmother would grill the boys who picked her granddaughters up for prom night. Those poor boys were asked countlessly questions about what their intentions were and what they were planning on doing with their life. Kitty mentioned to pull her date unscathed. Bringing Mal in for questioning could have been worse though. She could have built up some kind of friendship with the devil then he’d try and bite her. Wait, had Mal taken Krista to that place downstairs? Passed her around like some human juice box so he and all his mates could have a sip. It was a question for Kit, but she’d kind of forgotten about it as their conversation switched over to the tape. “You’ve seen the tape?” She exclaimed, her right eye widening with shock. Fuck, it had leaked to everyone in Mystic Falls. Just another piece of information she was going to hold back from Krista. Shame it was Mal, otherwise she would have laughed and discussed the details of the video with Kit, but she couldn’t bring herself to even think about it. Granted, Phoebe was well past hundred years old and Kitty had witnessed her kissing boys in their twenties, so yeah the whole age thing didn’t count for that. But Phoebe looked twenty something, meanwhile Mal looked like he was pushing forty. “The tape thing was before they were together… apparently… but anyway yeah she knows all about this but stays with him.” Well, she knew about all that in the past, but Kitty had no idea what Krista knew now. Kitty shrugged before knocking back her drink. She wasn’t going to be cheeky enough to ask for another one, sadly Kit had become a stickler for the rules recently. “Who knows. He could compel her to think that.” But if you put a gun to Kitty’s head she would accept Krista letting him do that, probably scared Mal would dump her otherwise. She was desperate to keep hold of him, even if it meant sacrificing a few pints of blood. Yay— Kit agreed with her. Mal was old news, he was gone and forgotten. Kicked to the curb like a piece of trash no one wanted. “He ain’t been round, but they bumped into each other or something… he had some shitty necklace with her name engraved on it and she has the other half of it. I managed to convince her that he was just some nut job… I didn’t really know what to say about the necklace though.” She was keen to move forward from the Mal saga, but she also wanted to know who had compelled Krista in the first place. She was torn between shaking their hand or punching them in the face for fucking with her best friend's mind. KIT CLARKE

━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ “FUCK YEAH I’VE SEEN IT,” KIT SCOFFED, raising his brows at Kitty. Aight, maybe that was too much, but yeah, it was a fuckin’ video and a half. He was kinda sad he couldn’t chat with Frank about it, and that the professor wasn’t single. “My, uh, roommate’s her good friend. They work together.” Kit explained in a normal tone.
Slowly, he started putting the pieces together, and his eyes widened at Kitty. “Wait… Krista’s the crazy chick who sent it out?” He blew out a breath and rocked back on his heels, holding onto the bar as he did. He laughed and shook his head, more in disbelief than anything else, and figured it made sense. Krista really was crazy as fuck.
He didn’t know who was better off, Krista or her boyfriend.
“‘Course she stays with him. Sounds like he’s the only one who handles her crazy.” Kit scoffed. “I know she’s your friend, but c’mon.” Kitty had to know, though, right? She lived with the girl during school.
Kit watched Kitty down her drink in a matter of seconds, and he raised his brows, but dutifully started making another. “Slow down, wouldja?” He was one to talk. But Kitty was different; she didn’t have to start knockin’ ‘em back just ‘cause her best friend was havin’ a rough time. Actually, not even, ‘cause she didn’t remember any of it.
He nodded slowly like he was considering it. Yeah, she could be getting compelled, too. That wasn’t off the table. But then why wouldn’t he compel her to, like, not be crazy? Or compel her to forget ‘bout seein’ the video? Kit would lay money on the fact that Krista liked givin’ him something ‘cause she got somethin’ else in return.
After pouring her drink into a new glass, Kit replaced it with her old one, and tossed the other in a small tub to be washed.
Ultimately, whether it was better for one party or the other, Kit had to agree. Kitty shouldn’t tell Krista ‘bout the dude. It would only make shit more complicated for everyone, and hopefully she’d learn to be normal if she didn’t have someone lettin’ her be fuckin’ crazy all the damn time.
Turns out she musta been good for somethin’, though (three guesses what that was), ‘cause he came to find her again. Or bumped into each other, but somebody had to tell ‘er ‘bout that necklace. “Jesus,” He laughed incredulously, “They have those?” Dude was a glutton for punishment. Or Krista was really good with her mouth. “Dunno what I’d say ‘bout it, either. I’ll let ya know if I come up with anythin’,” He grinned, then cracked open a beer for himself and tapped it against Kitty’s cup. “‘Nough ‘bout her, though. You good? School’s endin’ soon; you got plans?” Again, he was one to talk, but he’d done something important after high school━something he’d never change no matter how bad it fucked him up. All he wanted was to make sure Kitty was gonna do something rewarding, something she wanted to do, ‘specially now that he’d gotten her covered for the werewolf thing.

Her face screwed up in disgust when Kit admitted he’d also seen the tape. Course he had though, it was Kit. Bet he enjoyed watching the female professor too, but who wouldn’t? She was attractive, a thought she kept to herself, knowing Krista would scream murder if Kitty said that. “Woah, woah, woah.” She rocked forward the chair slightly, leaning on the bar, “You can’t tell anyone that she sent it, okay? I mean it. No one!” If the truth got out about how the video was leaked then Krista would find herself in a heap of shit, so deep even Kitty would struggle to pull her out. Plus, Krista had no idea about the tape anymore. Kitty had considered taking the fall for Krista if needed. She was at the end of her degree now, just in her final few weeks so what could they even do? Krista was bouncing off the walls batshit crazy at times, to the point it could be perceived as unhinged. There had been moments where Kitty had to take a moment to process Krista’s rambles. The girl probably needed a therapist or a lobotomy, but Kitty handled Krista’s crazy, so she didn’t need Mal in her life. She set the chair back onto its four legs as she pointed a finger at Kit, “Hey! She’s not crazy, she's just… eccentric.” Even before meeting Mal she’d always thought that he unintentionally prinkled a little extra madness into Krista. Her jealousy had no limits when it came to Mal, but Kitty put it down to the fact it was Krista’s first boyfriend. Naturally she was going to be head over heels for him. Kitty scoffed as Kit told her to slow down, “You’re one to talk.” She teased with a grin on her face, “It ain’t like one drink is gonna get me tanked.” Gone were the days where Kit would also be knocking back drinks with her. She missed those days, but it was obvious he was going through some shit back then. Shit she never quite got to the bottom of. The next drink goes down a lot slower, with Kitty taking a small sip once it’s placed down in front of her. “Yeah that shit kind of gives me the ick y’know, but Krista looooooves it.” Any obvious display of affection had Krista’s name written all over it. Kitty could never. She lifted her glass, tapping it lightly against Kit’s. She let out a long ass sigh when Kit asked her what she was doing after college. The dreaded question. “Fuck knows dude. I ain’t thought that far ahead.” Aka a few weeks ahead, “I think you should speak to Hector, tell him to hire me as like one of those promotion girls. I can stick shit up around town. Posters and stuff.” The second option was asking for a bar job but she’d be so jealous watching everyone having fun on the dance floor while she was stuck behind the bar, serving shots. KIT CLARKE - the end!
