There had been no mention of the M word in forever and Kitty was starting to feel a little guilty. Yes she hated Mal and she wished Krista and Mal had never met but it didn’t mean Krista couldn’t speak to Kitty at all about Mal. Hopefully the pair had split up, which was seeming very likely considering Krista wasn’t sneaking out all hours of the night anymore. She would come home at all hours of the night to find Krista fast asleep in her bed. Plus the bite marks had disappeared. There was something different about Krista though and Kitty couldn’t quite put her finger on it. But it did upset her that if Krista and Mal had split up Krista felt like she couldn’t come and speak to her best friend about it. Of course the first thing she would have done is brought out the bottle of tequila and poured shots for the girls and even though she hated Mal she would have provided a shoulder to cry on. She imagined break ups were hard, not that she’d ever been through one herself. The closest she had gotten to a relationship was a boy in her year at school when she was fifteen, but it fizzled out after a few weeks. After that Kitty considered herself a lone wolf (no pun intended). So realistic what did she know about the hole left behind in your heart after your ex decides to call it a day? She was assuming Mal was the one to pull the plug, given how smitten Krista had been. Now it was like he never existed. She didn’t even catch Krista shedding a tear which was so out of character. She expected hours of continuous sobbing. So, she decided to set up some kind of pamper night for her and Krista. Fun girly movies, poorly made cocktails, popcorn and cheap face masks. It was the perfect mix to try and get the truth from Krista about what had happened. Unfortunately she lacked the ability to compel the truth out of her best friends, so easing her in cocktails was her second option. “Sooooooo.” She handed Krista another cocktail as she climbed back onto the bed. This one was made of a mixture of whatever alcohol she had left over. “How’s everything going? You’ve been spending more time here recently.” She asked before sipping on her own cocktail carefully. Even that weird guy that somehow thought he knew her. She loved him like she loved all strangers, like how she was taught to love ‘em in Church, and hope that they got the help they needed. The matching necklace thing was weeeeird, though. Like, totally crazy. How’d it even get on her?
Anyway, she was super excited for her girls’ night with Kitty! She’d stuffed herself full of popcorn already (with no chance of stopping anytime soon), and had slurped down two fruity cocktails! Her face was starting to get hard to move, though━‘cause of the face mask. But hopefully it would make her skin all silky and nice and stuff! (She wasn’t exactly sure what they were supposedta do)
“Thanks!” Krista squeaked as she sipped her third cocktail. This one wasn’t as good, but she’d drunk so much that she didn’t really care anymore. “Have I?” Krista giggled, then downed a mouthful of her cocktail. “I feel like it’s the same? I dunno; maybe school is less, like, bad now? Uuuuh… stuff is good! I always get people in class━who don’t really know me━askin’ if I’m okay, but, other than that, it’s all good!” She was gonna ask how stuff was goin’ with Kitty, but then she got distracted again.
Krista pulled in a gasp, though it was slightly restricted by the fact that she couldn’t really open her mouth all the way. “Oh! I forgot to tell you, some guy came up to me yesterday and he, like, was so sure we knew each other. Like, he knew my name and everything! He was kinda old, though, said he wasn’t a student nothin’. Like, he came looking for me. Ain’t that weird? Said his name was Mal. Do you know him?” Did she, like, have a brain fart or was he actually just kinda crazy?! She was gonna feel really bad if she’d met him and forgotten him, though. That was so rude!

Kitty had spent the whole day looking forward to their girls' evening. It felt like they hadn’t done something like this in forever, mainly because Krista was always with Mal. Krista had neglected their friendship a little since meeting the piece of trash, but Kitty didn’t get too salty about it. It was her first relationship so of course she wanted to spend every single second with her boyfriend and Kitty was her biggest supporter until Mal tried to bite her. After that everything changed. Kitty found herself struggling to be happy for her friend when she was falling in love with someone like that. Even though she was hoping to ease Krista up with some alcohol she was also careful not to feed her too much. The last thing she wanted was Krista becoming a drunken mess and crying over Mal. It was a fine line and she was desperate not to cross it. Three cocktails would surely be enough, considering she’d seen Krista get wasted off five. The situation was making her feel a tad uncomfortable too, knowing that Krista should be crying constantly. It wasn’t like she was good at keeping in control of her emotions either, unlike Phoebe. That girl never cracked. Krista wasn’t cracking either. “Right… okay… so long as everything is cool with you.” She needed Phoebe’s help urgently because it was impossible to accept Krista was okay. She took another sip of her drink as Krista reeled off her story, but she almost choked on the liquid when she dropped Mal’s name in there so casually. Kitty laughed nervously, “Is… are you kidding me?” This had to be some kind of joke, but she didn’t want to laugh. “What did you say to him?” KRISTA MAY |

Honestly, Krista was doin’ good. As long as no more mystery guys approached her claimin’ they knew her, she’d be fine.
Seriously, she couldn’t stop thinkin’ about it.
“No,” Krista frowned at Kitty, then took another big gulp of her cocktail. “It sucked. Like, I felt so bad for him, ‘cause he was clearly super confused.” At Kitty’s next question, she sighed, rubbing the necklace over her shirt, feeling the half-heart shape beneath the fabric. Kitty didn’t really answer her, but she figured━by her reaction━that she didn’t know him. “Welllll,” She sighed heavily, “I basically just told him I didn’t know who he was and that I was sorry. I kinda thought he got me confused with someone or he was, like,” She leaned in and whispered even though they were alone, “Not all there…” Krista settled back on her bed again with a puff. “... But he had this necklace on and he knew lots about me. The other half of this.” Krista pulled it out of her shirt and frowned, flipping it over to reveal the “Mal” engraved on the back. “And his said ‘Krista.’ And I would remember somethin’ like that, right? ‘Cause clearly we didn’t just meet once.”
Krista rubbed a blunt nail against her glass absently as she thought, hazel eyes trained on the liquid inside. “I even accused him of workin’ with you or somethin’. Like, y’know, you put this on me in my sleep and then hired this dude for one of those prank videos.” She scoffed, but her smile died quickly. “But I guess you don’t know anythin’ ‘bout it if you’re askin’?” Krista almost hoped Kitty knew so then she wouldn’t have to feel so awful ‘bout it anymore. A prank woulda been mean, but it was better than thinkin’ about this guy who was wanderin’ ‘round thinkin’ Krista didn’t even care enough to remember him. Gosh, that was so sad.

Kitty’s mouth hung open slightly as Krista spoke about Mal, desperately trying to figure out whether her friend was being serious or not. Krista was being super serious though, Kitty could tell. Had she been to like some hypnotherapy shit where they’ve programmed her mind to think something else, or… oh damn. Someone had compelled Krista to forget about Mal. Her right eye fell on the necklace as Krista flipped it over. Who had done the compelling hadn’t tied up all the loose ends. She wanted to rip the necklace from Krista’s neck and burn it. “Yeah that’s kind of wild.” Obviously it wasn’t Mal who had done the compelling either, but the less Kitty knew, the better. “Probably just some weird coincidence… nothing to worry about.” She’d decided to hide the truth from her best friend, for her own sake. Did this make her a bad friend? She would be racked with guilt later, but if her mind had been wiped then maybe Krista had no knowledge of vampires either. Kitty didn’t want to be the one to deliver that bombshell. In fact, she was shocked to find Krista was cool about vampires existing in the first place, since they didn’t fit in with religion. Kitty had never picked up a bible, or any piece of religious text, but she was certain there was no mention of vampires in there. Just some guy who could feed lots of people with one fish. Then again, if Krista could believe in that then the vampire's seemed plausible.
“Prank videos?” Kitty chuckled lightly. She’d shown Krista some of those silly prank videos on YouTube before, especially those ones where people pretend to be a mannequin in a store. Those were her favourite. “Nah, no idea what you’re talking about.” Guilt struck her hard. This was her time to tell Krista the truth, but instead she drank her cocktail. “Like I said though, it’s probably nothing to worry about… if he comes over to you again maybe just attack him with something… like a wooden stake.” She laughed, but she was being one hundred percent serious. Clearly it was the only thing that was going to keep Mal away from Krista. KRISTA MAY wanna wrap with yours? |

But if Kitty had no idea, then she figured it was back to the drawing board! Or, uh, the freakin’ headache of trynna figure out this mystery. Ugh, she hated mysteries━if they weren’t too scary, then they were just way too confusing to figure out. Krista was always surprised by the outcome in the end━none of her guesses were ever right.
Krista downed the rest of her cocktail and furrowed at the brain freeze, then smiled to herself━she felt the warm buzz spread over her body almost instantly. She was about to drown in her own thoughts before Kitty’s comment pulled her out of them. Krista sputtered out a laugh, staring with an amused-slash-incredulous look at her friend. “A wooden stake?!” She giggled, “Like Dracula?” Krista didn’t know a ton of pop-culture references, but she knew that one!
Gosh, she was just so darn happy she had Kitty in her life━someone who could get her outta a funk almost instantly. “Mmmmaybe we should have som’more!” Krista lifted her cup and wiggled it in the air, giggling as she did. They were out of the extra stuff, but she was sure she was already a few cocktails deep enough to handle it now! She was so excited for the rest of their Girls’ Night!
