The drive from Brownsburg to Mystic Falls shouldn’t have taken too long, but it took Lottie nearly three days to reach her final destination due to a mixture of being unable to follow the map and having to pull over to sob whenever a song came on the radio that mentioned the word love. She wasn’t used to sitting behind the drivers seat either, opting for the passenger side whenever she and Freddie went anywhere. He was the one who navigated the maps and got them to wherever they needed to be whilst Lottie sat staring out the window. All this was coming back to bite her now because as soon as hit the highway out of Brownsburg it dawned on her that she’d never actually driven out of state. In fact, she hadn’t even driven much on her own. She always had someone with her. She pretty much hit the brakes immediately when the realisation crept into her mind. Viv was nearby though. She could ram the gear into drive and head straight there. It took half an hour until she started the car up again and rolled back onto the highway. This was her opportunity to get out of Brownsburg and try to be an independent woman, even though she was heading to her other sister. Lucky. The dependency was warranted though. Her marriage was over and she needed someone to comfort her, but upon reflection perhaps Lucky wasn’t the best sister to go to for that. She’d be fortunate to even get a hug from Lucky, but perhaps the tough love was what she needed. Alongside taking countless wrong exits there was a storm that hung over her for the majority of the journey. Water thrashed down on the hood of the car as Lottie went through another packet of tissues because she spotted something that reminded her of Freddie. It felt like the sun was never going to shine again in her world. She didn’t completely force herself into Lucky’s space though, even though it was tempting. She booked herself into the hotel instead, which she was dreading. Sleeping all alone in a strange room? The thought of it made her want to throw up, but she couldn’t back out now, especially because there was a heavy cancellation fee for less than twenty hours before the booking. Maybe she could sleep with the light on all night. Lottie approached the desk, ringing the little bell to announce her arrival. As she waited for someone to appear her eyes bounced around the reception area as she studied her surroundings. It seemed safe. Actually, it seemed like the type of hotel Freddie would have chosen for them to stay in. Tears started to sting her eyes. Again. It didn’t matter though as she already brought the rain to town with her. She brought her hand up trying to brush away the tears quickly as someone came out of the office. “Catia!” She exclaimed loudly. Lucky never mentioned Catia was here too, right? There were mixed feelings brewing inside of Lottie for a moment. Lucky had been adamant that Catia had basically abandoned the family to run off with her new boyfriend, but Lottie was so excited about seeing her sister that those feelings disappeared rapidly. She rushed around to the other side of the desk, throwing her arms around her sister. “I can’t believe you're here as well!” Did this mean Lucky and Catia were friends again? Hopefully. She finally let go of Catia, retreating back to the other side of the desk. “Do you work here? Wait… no obviously you do… I’m booked in here for a few weeks! I booked under Lottie Christmas though because…” She had a lump in her throat as she went to explain to her sister what had happened, “Me and Freddie are getting divorced and… anyway! Can I have a room on the highest floor?” That way no weird serial killers would crawl through her window at night. CATIA MCKENNA

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Catia decided that the day shift receptionist needed replacing. She was definitely not reliable in the slightest. She was tired of having to cover the desk when her employee couldn’t be bothered to show up to work. Or shown up when she felt like it…But needs must… the only good news was that she could still do some of her job while at the reception desk.
Stepping away from the desk only for a moment, and went to her office which was not far from the desk, using the lobby camera to keep an eye on the desk for when someone came in. She slumped into the couch in her office keeping an eye on the camera as she thought. In the matter of days her life had turned upside down. Cameron, the love of her life, was back. She had spent years thinking he was dead. She was happy, but things hadn’t just gotten back to how they were, for how could they. A long time had passed since then, she was a different person. He probably was as well. They were willing to make it work. They were meeting up later, trying to find their way back to who they had been.
Looking up she spotted someone standing at the desk. A flow of dark hair. Standing quickly she headed back out again, her tablet in hand and went behind the desk, ” Welcome to the Grey Haven. How can I-“ She started with the same welcoming speel. Her voice polite, but it was almost a rehearsed speech. She was cut off when she saw the girls face and her name in a familiar tone. Stunned she smiled, ” Lottie.” She repeated more stunned to see her than anything.
Lottie had always been the happier one, the more carefree. It was almost impossible not to respond to her warmth and energy. When her sister dashed around the desk and enveloped her in a hug, Catia returned the hug, squeezing her tightly for a moment. ” Yeah, I’ve been here for almost a year now.” Catia answered her before Lottie she stepped back from her. ” You’ve seen Lucky then?” Catia asked. She knew that her youngest sister had joined her here a while ago. They were working toward building their relationship… so far so good.
Lottie walked back to the other side of the desk and Catia stayed on her own. She smiled when Lottie asked if she worked here and Catia smiled and nodded. Then she added what she was doing here at the hotel. Catia stepped up to the computer flicking open the system and typed in her married name and came up with no joy. Then she heard what she said about her husband and Catia’s eyes softened, ” I’m sorry Lottie…” Catia told her gently, typing in her family name, and found her booking. She wasn’t a manager for nothing. Taking her as high as she could go and giving her one of the best rooms they had, programming her a key card she slid it across the counter.
It was at that moment that the receptionist bustled in, looking a little more than dishevelled. Catia gave her a less than impressed look and allow the girl to give her apologies before stepping away from the desk, ” Looks like I suddenly have some free time. Want to get a drink?” She said gesturing to the hotel bar. The underlying question was ‘do you want to talk?’

Even her waterproof mascara couldn’t withstand the amount of tears flowing out of Lottie’s eyes on the drive to Mystic Falls but she had managed to calm herself down to a reasonable level by the time she pulled into the car park. She didn't want people seeing her cry then ask what was wrong to set her off again, having to explain the story. How did it even come to this? They were supposed to be together forever. He’d even stood up in front of all his family at their wedding and promised her forever, but it came to an unexpected end after a few years. This was by far the worst pain she had ever experienced. It felt like her heart was literally breaking in her chest. It wasn’t like a broken bone, where she could just slap a cast on it and it would heal within a few weeks or month. There was no remedy for this, although Viv joked the best way to get over a man was to get under another one. Usually Lottie would laugh along with Viv’s joke, but not that one. It went down like a lead balloon, leaving Lottie furious that her sister could even suggest something so stupid. No, she was now sworn off men. They were nothing but trash and they all cheated. If Freddie couldn’t be trusted, then none of them could be. Now she longed for some level of comfort from Lucky, which was ridiculously ironic. Lottie had sorted out the sister who was the most cold hearted one, but now she had two sisters to lean on for comfort. Maybe Viv should join them too, so they could have a proper reunion. “Not yet, but she told me she was here… which is why I’m here.” Because Lottie was completely incapable of making decision on her own, when Lucky mentioned Mystic Falls Lottie was packing her car, despite the lack of invite. “It’s so good seeing you!” Again, she threw her arms around Catia for a second time, genuine filled with happiness to see her sister again. It was almost embarrassing having to admit to her sister her marriage had crumbled. She had spent gloating about her perfect marriage, her perfect husband and her perfect life with him, but it was a sham. “Thanks.” She responded quietly with a weak smile on her face as she grabbed the key off the desk. Her head whipped around as another girl came rushing into the hotel, apologising for being late. She went to smile at the stranger, but noticed Catia didn’t greet her with a warm smile so Lottie followed suit, remaining stone faced. She nodded at Catia, “Yeah that’d be nice.” She collected her bags from the floor before stepping back from the desk, waiting for Catia to lead the way. CATIA MCKENNA

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
It had been years since Catia had last seen her sisters. They hadn’t exactly parted on good terms. Initially she had hated herself for what she had done. Allowing her temper to break that relationship. But she also knew that if she didn’t, then she would still be stuck in that little town, playing mother to her younger sisters. Now it seemed they were all coming here and Catia was grateful for the chance to at least mend the damage she had wrought.
She asked if she had seen Lucky yet, as she had admitted that is who she was here for… Catia was just a bonus, ” Yeah she came here looking for me.” Catia admitted, ” Its been interesting.” Lucky in traditional fashion has come here to make amends with her. In true Lucky fashion, her attitude hadn’t really changed and Catia would never expect it to. Trying to put the past behind them, and Catia was nothing but proud of the mother that she was to her daughter. Things had all worked out in the end.
She hugged Lottie, her smile and laughter as infectious as ever and it was impossible not to respond to her warmth, ” Its good to see you too.” She returned. Wondering briefly where her husband was… and she soon had her answer. When she couldn’t immediately find her booking under her married name. She apologized instantly when Lottie told her. As requested, she used her own login to override the initial booking. The initial booking being what she could afford, not something which Catia was going to take care of. Giving her a better room on a higher floor.
Sliding the key across the counter, annoyed that she was covering the desk, due to the late receptionist. Honestly her sister had just shown up and she couldn’t even spend time with her. Almost as if she was summoned the girl stumbled through the main doors and Catia’s look at her was less than impressed. Stepping from behind the desk, deciding to have it out with her later, she turned to Lottie asking if she wanted to have a drink at the bar, ” Leave them. We will have them moved to your room.” Catia told her turning back to the receptionist, ” Call Gavin and have her bags moved to her room please?” Catia requested in her professional voice. The girl was instantly on the internal phone calling their concierge. Tilting her head she walked across the lobby to the right and led her sister into the bar, ” What would you like?” She asked her. It was midafternoon, 5 o clock somewhere Catia mused to herself. Smiling at the bartender he smiled back before busying himself getting Catia’s preferred drink ready for her.

It was a mystery as to where Lottie had inherited her overly sensitive personality trait from. Her mom wasn’t made of glass, especially after spending years behind bars and her dad certainly wasn’t emotional. She had a free pass this time though because naturally she was going to be upset that the love of her life had been cheating on her. It brought bile rushing to the back of her throat if she thought about it too much, allowing herself to process the details. Her sisters were going to be the perfect distraction though and this little town she was going to call her temporary home. The place seemed okay, but she hated the fact she knew no one. It wasn’t like Lucky was going to keep her company every night, sipping on hot chocolate and watching trash reality shows. It was another mystery as to why she sought out comfort from Lucky aka the most prickly one. Maybe the tough love she was about to receive from Lucky was what she needed. Grabbing her by both hands, yanking her up on her feet and telling her to forget about Freddie because he was a piece of shit. Why waste a minute longer crying about that man? But then Catia was here too. She’d dial it back a little when dealing with Lottie. She frowned for a second when Catia mentioned that Lucky had come to Mystic Falls looking for her. Bizarre considering Lucky was salty as hell when Catia left home, accusing Catia of abandoning the family. It was clear that bygones were bygones now. It was the good news she needed to hear. Lottie placed her bags back down on the floor, “That’d be great! Thank you.” It was hard enough trying to drag her bags from her car to the front desk and it was only a fraction of her belongings. She wasn’t in the right frame of mind when she was throwing clothing in her suitcase, so fuck knows what was in there. Hopefully she hadn’t accidentally thrown Freddie’s sweater in there otherwise that would bring hours of crying. Was it too early to order a margarita? Oh fuck it. She was dealing with a broken heart. “Margarita please.” She flashed a small smile to the bartender. There was a small chance the alcohol was going to turn her into an emotional mess. “So what are you doing in Mystic Falls? “ As matters stood she was failing to see the appeal in the small town. Like, it was okay but not a place she would have chosen to come to alone. CATIA MCKENNA

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Catia honestly couldn’t believe that another one of her younger sisters was here. All they needed now was Vivi and it would be a family reunion. All Catia could hope for that it would be an amicable reunion. Her reunion with Lucky had gone as well as she could have hoped. Lottie though had never had an ounce of Lucky’s attitude. The twins were honestly like polar opposites. Vivi being the much more prickly of the two.
Though with this warm welcome she had to think that Lottie hadn’t held her departure against her. It could have only served to better all of them. Catia had been like a second mother since their father lost their fortune, and he could no longer afford to keep a constant sitter on staff.
With Lottie all booked into the hotel, she was about to let her go and get settled in as she couldn’t leave the desk. But as luck would have it (or a miracle) the receptionist actually arrived at her job. Catia had given her a stony look before stepping out from behind the counter not accepting her apologies. Catia then was offering her a drink at the bar, a chance for them to talk.
Catia gestured at the bar for her to order whatever she liked; she certainly didn’t care about the time as the bartender handed her own drink. It wasn’t the hard stuff that she had upstairs in her room, a spirit with a mixer. Upstairs… mixers were non-existent. With her sister placing an order for a margarita Catia lifted her own drink, while they waited for her sister’s drink.
Once it was in hand, she moved them to a table off to the quieter side of the bar. Lottie was first to ask a question at what she was doing here, ” Well I work for the chain of these hotels. They are across America and I am the group manager for all of them. This is just the newest in a long line I have helped create.” Catia shrugged her shoulders, ” In all honesty I didn’t help set up this one. Grey came here earlier than I did. I went travelling around the others: checking in in person instead of just over a video call.” Catia smiled. She was happy to talk about her for a minute. If Lottie didn’t want to talk about her breakup that was fine, Catia certainly wasn’t going to push.

Viv was probably itching to leave their family home sooner than what she did because she was constantly asking herself what about Lottie? Would Lottie be okay? Sometimes Lottie was like a dead weight, hanging around her neck, refusing to float on her own. Eventually she was shown how to float on her own, but only for a short while because she found Freddie to cling onto. With him gone she would have to cling onto Lucky and Catia, until they cut her loose. Lucky first probably. The margarita was placed on the bar and she lifted the glass to her lips, taking a sip. Not bad. She took another sip, this time bigger. One drink Lottie was fine to handle, but three drink Lottie could be a nightmare. With her drink in hand she followed Catia to the table, sitting across from her sister. Contact with Catia had been minimal since she left Brownsburg as Lottie was always under the impression her oldest sister wanted to be left alone. She’d run away from the family, and didn't want to be contacted. That’s how Lucky had portrayed it. “You’re doing so well!” Lottie was also feeling a bit of relief too because there was no way her sister would let some deranged person check into the hotel, find Lottie’s room and kill her. She felt safe knowing Catia was in charge. Her finger trailed around the top of her glass gently as she sighed, “I’ve left my mom to sell my salon. It’s not going well… Freddie was cheating on me with some bitch.” She managed to get her words out without turning into a blubbering mess even though it was brewing, “Do you have any jobs here? I’m kind of screwed until the salon sells.” Plus half her money was tied up in the house Freddie was still living in. CATIA MCKENNA

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
With her sister sat across from her, ready to be the big sister that she hadn’t been for a long time, if that is what she needed. Though she wasn’t going to push her to talk about what happened. That would come out in its own time, perhaps sooner if she downed a few more margaritas. Instead, Lottie asked about her, and what she was doing here.
Catia then explained part of what she had been up to since leaving her sisters behind all those years ago. Working with her friend, building a massively successful chain of hotels across the continent, ” Ahh pays the bills…” Catia shrugged. Not that she had many of those either. Staying in the hotel was a pittance in comparison to what she would have been paying for a mortgage. Given that they had been moving around the country setting up these hotels… it made sense to stay in them.
Catia waited and didn’t push and then Lottie started talking, this time about herself. Her face turned soft when she revealed what Freddie had done, rage kindling inside her like a hot flame. How dare he? She kept that off her face, that was something she didn’t have to deal with. Lottie was the sweetest girl in the world and didn’t deserve that. Should Catia ever see him, she would have a few choice words for him, ” I’m sorry.” Catia said again, ” You loved that place.” Catia stated with sad smile.
When she went on to ask about jobs Catia just smiled, ” What do you want to do?” Catia asked first. Cleaners they were always looking for. She then flicked a look to the receptionist, ” Want hers? Her days are numbered…” Catia half joked. Giving her sister a better room at a lesser cost she could do and giving her a job was something she could also do. But she wouldn’t make her do something she didn’t want to do. Cleaning rooms certainly wasn’t glamourous not by any stretch of the imagination.

As they settled down in the bar any nerves she had about the hotel had completely lifted. It was apparent some strange man wasn’t going to sneak into her room in the middle of the night and kill her. There was still a chance they could sneak in through the window, but that’s why she kept everything triple bolted. In the few times they had been away she’d always had Freddie in the bed next to her. Without him there she felt vulnerable and very lonely. No one could have prepared her for those nights where she would sit in bed alone, wide awake until the early hours of the morning, then she would peel herself out of bed to try and go about her day. Sleep was the thing of the past for now, but maybe a few drinks from the bar would help her fade away. Selling the salon felt like she was selling a limb. The place had been a massive part of her life for so long, along with the customers. Locking the door for the final time almost completely broke her, but she had her mom alongside her, holding her hand insisting there would be better opportunities out there. She was praying there was something for her in Mystic Falls because she couldn’t drag her ass back to her hometown, for starters the journey was traumatic. So many damn highways and drivers beeping at her constantly for just simply driving (but mainly it was because she failed to use her blinker all the time). Lottie pulled her eyes away from her sister for a moment, looking over at the woman in reception. “Oh I don’t want to take someone's job!” She looked back at Catia as she took a sip of her drink. That would surely bring her bad karma and she’d had enough of that shit. “But if there’s a vacancy I’ll take it.” Even if it did mean changing beds and vacuuming. ❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Catia joked only a little when she offered her sister the receptionists job. She wouldn’t be so callous, but a conversation would need to be had regarding her attendance to her job, ” In my defence she is effectively firing herself with her piss poor attendance.” Catia rushed to explain as she sipped on her drink. After all she had her own job to do and couldn’t always get that done while she was busy covering for the late or absent receptionist.
Catia smiled a bit when she said that she couldn’t take someone elses job. Never mind that it probably wouldn’t even be hers for much longer unless she made a drastic overnight change. Catia wasn’t about to fire someone immediately. She would at least have the conversation first though. When Lottie said that she would take anything she smiled a bit, ” I’m sure we have something. Let me look later and I’ll get back to you.” Catia offered her sister. Off the top her head she couldn’t be sure, so she would offer her the best thing they had available, that she could do well, while she got on her feet. ” Though this isn’t going to be a forever thing, Lottie. You’re too good at what you do. So, once you are back on your feet, settled and sorted, I will accept your happy resignation. Alright?” Catia warned her, big sister naturally coming back out to the surface, only wanting the best for her younger siblings… and that included Lucky with her foul attitude.
She wasn’t going to allow her sister to just sit and wallow and work away like a glorified Cinderella, if she did end up with a housekeeping role at the hotel, ” That’s my only condition for giving you a job.” Catia told her gently. Her only condition was that it was only for while she found her feet. Got back on track…

Would Lottie’s attendance be any better? She was always on time opening her salon but that was because she had hair to cut. However, she was forever late for every single other appointment in her life. Time just didn’t make sense to her sometimes, especially when it came to one of those twenty four hour clocks. But she’d be in the hotel anyway so it would be impossible for her to be late. All she would need to do is walk down the stairs and bam she was there. Her face lit up when Catia said she’d have a look into it regardless. The whole getting back on her feet seemed impossible though. As for being settled and sorted? Oh that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. Nonetheless Lottie nodded slowly. “Deal!” She agreed brightly, reaching forward to shake her sister’s hand. She pulled her attention away from Catia for a moment, observing her surroundings. Was she going to be happy here? Maybe. She’d yet to see Lucky though so it could all go downhill from there.
