Scooping ice cream into a cone every Saturday and Sunday morning wasn’t exactly Eden’s idea of fun, but money from the podcast rolled in very slowly, plus, it kept her parents off her back who constantly worried about their daughter supporting herself from the income generated from the podcast. Her dad would always make comments that it was impossible for a person to make a decent salary from talking into a microphone about ghosts, but Eden refused to let that dream die. Whilst she was forever the optimistic person, she was also realistic in the fact she and Billy weren’t about to make money that quickly. Their fan base was growing though with each episode released and eventually, sponsors were starting to show an interest. They were yet to reach the top one hundred podcasts on any type of listening service. Eden had pened up an idea for a new episode all about werewolves, but first she wanted to go on a werewolf watch with Penny on a full moon. Oh, so beautiful Penny who had a radiating smile and gave her number to Eden. She spent days following their encounter thinking about how to word her first text message to Penny. She wanted to sound chilled and cool, but not too cool, just the right amount of cool. She couldn’t go in with a standard ‘Hey you okay?’ text because that was boring as hell. So, she held back until a week before the full moon then bit the bullet asking Penny if she’d like to grab a coffee somewhere in town. Casual, chill, cool. Which was the complete opposite to how Eden was feeling when she hit send on the text message, then she circled her phone until Penny replied. She jumped for joy when Penny said yes. Then Eden pretty much broke her ankle running to work to tell Daniel all about Penny. There was a voice of reason in her head that was telling her she was jumping to conclusions. Yes, Penny was happy to go for a coffee with Eden but that didn’t mean she liked Eden. This wasn’t a date, she had drilled that into her mind, as much as she wanted it to be. “Daniel!” She rushed into the store, positioning herself behind the counter, “Remember that girl I told you about? Penny? Anyway! She’s yes to meet for a coffee.” She could barely get her words out quick enough as she spoke, filled with excitement that it was about to burst from the seams. Daniel could almost sense Eden's arrival even before seeing her and he wished that he was wrong for once about that, but then the door opened and it revealed none other than Eden herself and it was honestly a miracle that she had managed to make her way to work without breaking something or ruining someone's day on the way over. "Anyone know a Daniel around here?" Daniel pretended to not know who Eden was speaking to for a moment but she still carried on with the conversation regardless and he did listen because he couldn't deny that he was curious what had gotten her so excited.
"Penny? No, I don't know who that is. You've only talked about her like, twelve-hundred times." Daniel sarcastically remarked while adjusting the flavors in their correct place in front of their names before he paused at Eden's words and quirked an eyebrow because he did not expect that. "Meet as friends for coffee, or as an official date thing? Please tell me you didn't just say 'let's meet for coffee' and actually asked her on a legit date." Daniel paused in his task to look at Eden properly, one hand propped on his waist like the stance of a very disappointed parent.

Eden almost launched herself over the counter to hit Daniel when he was standing there pretending not to see her but instead she launched into a ramble about Penny, barely coming up for breath. Only twelve-hundred times? Wow it felt like at least thirty-hundred times. She couldn’t help though. Eden had latched onto the idea that Penny might fancy her. Similarly she latched onto the idea that her dead ancestors' ghosts haunted her family home. She was like a dog with a bone sometimes, unable to let things go. She quickly grabbed her apron from off the side, throwing it over her head as Daniel rearranged the flavours into their correct position. She took the hazelnut chocolate flavour, shuffling it along a little. “Gotta be next to pistacho mate.” She pulled her hand away from the ice cream, looking up at Daniel as he spoke. She sighed dramatically. “I asked if she wanted to grab a coffee sometime. I didn’t wanna use the D word in case she got all weird and shit… ugh I should have used the D word right?” Fuck. This was why she should have spoken to Daniel before sending the message. “Help me! What should I do?” She grabbed Daniel by the shoulders, dropping her head slightly as she sighed again. Daniel made a disgusted look when Eden adjusted the position of the hazelnut chocolate to be next to the pistachio. He looked like he had gotten cursed at personally with how offended he looked. "No, mate, you're supposed to put chocolate away from the pistachio, or it's just gonna smell like pistachio." Daniel stubbornly adjusted the hazelnut chocolate ice cream to be away from the pistachio.
"God, you're helpless." Daniel sighed and shook his head dramatically. Honestly, he should reel in his own words and how cocky he was because he was just as bad, especially with the fact that he had never dated anyone before. So he shouldn't make fun of her for not asking her out on a date. "Yes, Eden. You really should've used the D-word. If she had turned you down, at least you would've known the answer, no?" Daniel stopped adjusting the flavors once he was pleased with their arrangement. He made sure to adjust the tags accordingly so they knew the name of each flavor.
"You're a hopeless case, bud. I don't know if even I can help you." Daniel was being a little more dramatic than necessary but hey, he lived to tease her, and he would rather not make things easy for her from the get-go. "Obviously, you're gonna go out with her and try to ask her out again before the night ends. This time, use the D-word. Please. For the love of anything holy. Be like, hey, I had so much fun today. Wanna do this again sometime? As an official date." Daniel worked on matching the tone of his voice to Eden's, adding an exaggerated wink. "She's gonna fall for you so hard, dude. Don't even worry about it. Just follow my lead. It's guaranteed to get you that date."

The only people she’d been on dates with were silly boys when she was a teenager still trying to figure herself out. Mostly she was just lying to herself though, pretending that she was attracted to boys when in fact they made her stomach turn. The thought of kissing a boy? Ew. But she’d never been on a date with a girl. Was it different? This was a whole new world for her despite being out of the closest for a few years. “But now the vanilla is gonna smell like pistachio?” Who gave a fuck anyone. It was just ice cream. Eden left it alone because they had more pressing issues to discuss. Penny.
“Wait… you think she might have turned me down? Nah… she seemed keen.” Or maybe she’d completely misread the signals. Penny was holding up a huge sign that said ‘Not into you, sorry.’ and Eden had read it and thought, ‘Yep. She’s so into me.’ It wouldn’t have been the first time she’d misread a situation. She watched Daniel adjust the flavours, biting her tongue and not telling him they were in the wrong order. Eden started to fan at her face rapidly as panic set in. Why the hell didn’t she use the D-word? Penny was going to think she was some creepy lesbian who fancied every single girl she saw. Totally inaccurate, she only fancied the pretty ones like Penny. “Wait a minute Daniel. How many girls have you asked on a date, hmph?” It was a grand total of zero since they’d met, unless he’d been asking girls out on the sly without consulting Eden. DANIEL ROSWELL |
