━ uneasy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam liked to think that he'd changed in a positive way over the past couple of months. It wasn't an overly drastic change where he'd suddenly found himself lodged in his rebellious phase or anything like that, but he wasn't exactly the same wide-eyed boy who looked at the world through rose-colored glasses anymore. He was still Adam, the good boy who followed the rules and tried his hardest not to give his parents any hard time, that never changed and it will possibly never change. But with every past traumatic event, Adam changed bit by bit, he started realizing that bad guys really do exist and they are out there, waiting for the perfect chance to pounce and it was the mere thought of losing anyone in his family or any of his friends that scared him to his core. He didn't want to lose anyone but he was also aware that it wasn't in his hands to do anything about it, either. But you know what? He'd try because that was all that mattered, right?
He didn't think that today would be one of those days where he'd have to try and protect someone he loved dearly but life sure had its way of throwing obstacles when you least expect it to. He was on his way to his next lecture with Ria when screams began to echo in the corridor. There were a few students running toward them, passing by them in a hurry to get away from whatever was there at the end of the corridor. Rather than running away with the rest of the students, Adam turned to look at Ria to see if she was thinking the exact same thing. "I can get whoever it is to stop if I can get close enough." Adam sounded confident which also gave away just how much he'd changed. He'd always been in odds with his powers, had always felt ashamed of having them and with his constant anxiety, they were always tip-toeing near the edge of bursting out of him and hurting everyone around him. But being at the school helped in so many ways and now, he felt like he had some control over his powers. Adam felt the ground beneath his feet begin to shake harshly and more screams ensued from all around him which made him move forward as if his feet were possessed.
They were losing control over their powers rapidly and he was worried that if they wait a second longer, someone might actually end up getting hurt. He spotted the student surrounded by knocked down lockers, her hands covering her ears as she tried to calm herself down. Adam saw brief flashes of him trying to do the exact same thing in the past. He could almost feel that fear all over again. "Hey!" Adam called out as he stepped forward carefully. "It's Maxine, right?" Adam knew who it was but they never actually talked. "My name is Adam. This is my girlfriend, Ria. We're here to help you, okay? I know how scary it is, to lose control like this, but we're going to help you, I promise." Adam tried to reason with the scared student but she stepped away instead.
"Stay away! I don't want to hurt you, too! Please! Stay away! I don't need your help... I don't need it!" The girl screamed which caused their surroundings to shake even more which made Adam take a step back so he wouldn't scare her even more. "That — went terribly, right? I feel like it definitely did. I can't get closer to her like this. We need to calm her down first. Uh. Any ideas?"

Ria had learned about the supernatural when she was younger since her mom had told her about that world in order to prepare her to become a part of it. It had always seemed inevitable to Ria that she would take after one of her parents but what she hadn’t known was which one. Her mom was a kitsune and her dad was a werewolf so there was quite a difference between them but in the end it had been her dad that she had taken after the most. She was a werecreature like him only she didn’t turn into a wolf like he did every full moon, instead she turned into a panther. That was something that she hadn’t seen coming but ever since that very first full moon when she had escaped her captor at long last she had been doing her best to control her new abilities. She had met Adam pretty quickly after she escaped and knowing that he was also getting used to controlling his abilities had helped. She had trusted him not to hurt her straight away and he had proved her right and ever since then they had both been working really hard to learn more about what they were and what they could do. Now they had both graduated from high school and had decided to stay on at the Salvatore College and as far as Ria was concerned it was the best decision they could have made. The school was a safe haven for them and others like them and she knew that she wouldn’t have wanted to go to college anywhere else. Sooner or later they were really going to have to face the real world and they did see more than just the inside of the school but Ria knew that she still had so much more to learn about the supernatural world and she wanted to be as prepared as she could be. Her mom had taught her as much as she could but there was a lot that she still didn’t know and being a kitsune meant that she didn’t completely understand the werecreature side of it. At the school Ria was surrounded by a pack who understood what she went through every month and she also had Adam by her side so she knew that she really couldn’t ask for anything more than that. There was a time when Ria and Adam had been the ones losing control of their abilities in the hallway but this time it was someone else and the moment Ria heard the screams it was enough to make her blood run cold. Some students seemed to be running in their direction to get away from whoever it was who was losing control but Ria couldn’t bring herself to do that and the moment her eyes met Adam’s she could see that the same was true for him. “I know you can, let’s do this,” she nodded. Ria had never been the kind of person who could turn her back on someone who needed help and she wasn’t afraid to put herself in harm’s way to protect others. That was something that she knew she had inherited from both of her parents and she wasn’t ashamed of that. Ria instinctively reached for Adam’s arm as the ground beneath them began to move and together they made their way forward. It didn’t take them long to find the girl who was losing control and Ria offered the girl a smile as Adam introduced her as well. “It didn’t go terribly, she’s just in a bad place right now,” Ria assured him gently. That was definitely something that she could understand and she knew that they had to find a way to help the girl. “I’ve got one idea but she needs to want to help herself,” she nodded as she stepped forward. “Maxine, try and focus on the sound of my voice. We’ve all been where you are, the first time Adam and I met he was scared of hurting anyone too but I trusted him and it paid off. We’re trusting you now not to hurt us,” she said gently as she took a couple of steps forward. “I know you’re trying to do this on your own but you don’t have to. We’ve all had help, there’s no shame in that. The first thing you need to do is get your breathing under control, can you do that for me? Take a deep breath in for five seconds at the same time I do and then exhale for another five seconds. You can do this,” she said, waiting until the girl was ready before doing just that and hoping that Maxine would follow suit. ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ uneasy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam understood the fear that came with losing control, it was that very same fear of hurting someone that made you lose control even more so. Wasn't that such a cruel joke? You try your hardest not to hurt someone but in the end, you end up doing it anyway and you just can't control it because with every passing moment, it just gets worse and worse until you're the only one left standing in the wreckage. Adam sympathized with the girl and if it weren't for the school's continuous hard work to help him keep his powers under control, he would have been right there next to her. He knew what she was going through but despite all that, he still wasn't sure how to calm her down though. He can't remember what worked for him when he was feeling like he was out of control because, thankfully, he hadn't lost control in a long time, possibly close to a year now. "Okay." Adam nodded his head at Ria's words when she said that she had an idea. He watched her step closer to the scared girl who seemed to be a lot more terrified now, terrified of what she could do, terrified of what she had done already. There was nothing worse than the guilt that came right after, it was so intense and so overwhelming it could swallow you whole. Adam watched what was happening between the two of them, the girl slowly but surely bringing her attention to Ria and from the looks of things, she was listening to what she was saying.
Adam took a small step closer too, his own movements were a lot slower than Ria's and he wasn't saying much because he didn't want to break the moment between Ria and Max because it really did feel like the girl was slowly but surely calming down. He could hear a few of the students coming closer to where Max was but Adam made a gesture for them to stay still, shaking his head slightly in a way that was meant to warn them not to come closer. Thankfully, they seemed to understand what Adam was trying to say and they came to a stop, so did Adam as his eyes relaxed on Max who actually seemed to be taking slow and deep breaths, following Ria's administrations. He watched the way the ground stopped shaking so much under their feet and released a quiet sigh of relief but he knew they weren't out of the woods yet although he could tell that they were close, really close. The rumble in the ground was present, reminding him that if anything were to tick Max off, it won't end well for anyone involved.
Adam took a small step forward and closer to Max. "My powers were out of control all the time. It was really, really messy and I guess what they don't tell you about being different is that it's scary but with the right people and the right amount of help, it's bearable, Max. It's controllable, too. You just need to find your own pace, that's all and trust me, you're in the safest place to find that." Adam offered her a small reassuring smile when he felt her eyes rest on him, her chest rising and falling quickly but with each deep breath, it started to get slower and slower. "Trust me, Max, if I can control my powers then so can you. My powers are triggered by my emotions and if I'm anxious then they get out of control and you wanna know something? I'm anxious all the time." Adam said with a brief chuckle falling from his lips not long after, feeling hope bloom within his heart when he saw the small smile that formed on her lips. "Want me to let you in on a little secret? I'm anxious now, but do I look like I'm losing control to you? No, right? There's hope for you, I promise you." Adam took a small step closer to Max, his hand held out for her to take, a silent request for her to trust him.
And she probably would've taken his hand if it weren't for the student that stepped on broken glass from the burst lights and pulled her attention to him and just like that, the ground beneath them was back to shaking vigorously.

Ria had known for a while that chances were she would have taken after one of her parents and it turned out that the person she took after was her dad. She hadn’t known what was happening at first when the moonlight had hit her skin and she had started to change after finally escaping but she had quickly figured it out. Ever since then she’d grown used to having her dad with her during full moons but she knew that she had others who knew what it was like thanks to the Salvatore School as well. She had her pack around her and the truth was that Ria knew that she would be lost without them. Adam and her mom were both so supportive but they didn’t know what it was like to go through that pain every month and the truth was that she wouldn’t wish it on them either. She’d had to learn to control herself just like Maxine was going to have to go now and she honestly believed that the girl could do it but she wasn’t sure whether Maxine believed that herself just yet. She was clearly scared and Ria could remember all too well what that felt like. She didn’t want anyone to feel like that if she could help it and she knew that she wasn’t going to leave Adam try and help the girl on his own. Maxine seemed to be listening and Ria was relieved to see that the girl was taking deep breaths in time with her. She seemed to be calming down and that was enough to make Ria relax a little but not completely, not yet. She knew that it would only take one thing to set Maxine off and that was the last thing they needed. It was clear that she didn’t want to hurt anyone and Ria knew all too well what that was like. It would be easy to give in and lose control but Maxine was trying to hang on and for that Ria really was grateful. Adam’s words were enough to bring a smile to Ria’s lips. “Adam’s right, you’re not on your own anymore. You’re surrounded by lots of people who are like you and who are learning to keep what they can do under control, just like you’re trying to do right now,” she said gently. A small laugh escaped Ria as Adam said that his powers got out of control if he felt anxious and he was anxious all the time. She knew that it was the truth but he was doing so much better than he had been when she had bumped into him the day they met and she really was proud of him. “You can do this Maxine, we believe in you,” she said, offering the girl a smile before groaning mentally as she heard a noise behind her and suddenly the ground was shaking once more. Rounding on the student that had moved, Ria’s eyes flashed golden as they met the boy’s scared ones. “We’ve got this, get out of here,” she growled, shooting a look in the direction of his companions who quickly nodded and led him away before Ria turned back to look at Maxine once again. “It’s just us now, you don’t need to be afraid. You can do this. Adam and I know you can, you just need to believe in yourself as much as we believe in you.”ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ uneasy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam had his doubts about the school at first, he thought that they wouldn't be able to help him, that he was too far gone for them to be able to make any difference but they had proven him wrong when they took him in and showed him that he was worth saving. He knew that they will show Max the exact same thing, she just needs to believe in herself first. He was quiet as Ria spoke and he could tell from the girl's reaction that her words were working but there was a moment where Max began to lose control all over again and that was when Ria told the other to get out of there, leaving just the three of them.
"It's going to be okay. i know this might seem like the end of the world to you, but it's not. It won't be." Adam assured her softly, knowing that the guilt of it all would make her feel like the world was going to end because of just one mistake. Maxine began to try her best to calm down and Adam noticed the change almost immediately as the ground began to stop shaking. "That's it. You're doing so well." Adam praised, all while keeping his eyes on Max still. She began to shake her head slowly, still struggling to get her powers under control especially with how hard she was crying. "I can't. I can't. Please help me." Max begged which made his heart ache for her because he had been in that exact position before. He nodded his head a few times, his hands moving to gently cup Max's cheeks, drawing her attention to him and with their eyes fixed on each other, Adam spoke again. "I'm sorry." Using mind control wasn't his favorite thing because it felt wrong using it on others but he knew that Maxine was really struggling to keep her powers under control, so he had to do something or else she'd end up doing something she'd regret for years to come.
"Calm down, Maxine." Adam used his mind control on the other and the difference it made was instantaneous. She calmed down visibly, her eyes stopped producing those streams of tears and the rise and fall of her chest became a lot more stable, same with her breathing. "That's it. That's good." Adam drew his hands away and gently held onto her arm just in case she needed support standing or walking. Adam's own head was ringing but that was usually what happened after using his mind control power. It usually left him feeling a lot weaker than before. He wiped the blood that started falling from his nose. He looked over at Ria, offering her a small relieved smile before he drew his attention to Max. "Okay, let's get you to the nurse's office to check you for any injuries, yeah?" Maxine nodded her head slowly and that was when he turned his attention to Ria again. "Ready to go?"

Ria had felt like her world was falling apart when she shifted for the first time shortly after she finally escaped the guy that had been holding her captive for so long but she knew now that things could have easily been much worse. Being around both of her parents and being at the Salvatore School had helped, she had gained confidence in who she was and she had learned to control what she could do as well. Even the full moons didn’t scare her like they once had, the pain was still difficult to deal with but she had her dad and her pack to help her with that and even though Adam wasn’t a werecreature like her, she knew that she could always lean on him for support and she was so grateful to him for that. Adam had his own stuff going on so she always tried to be there for him in return as well and now it was their turn to be there for Maxine as well. One thing Ria had learned during her time at the school was that you couldn’t give up on anyone and she knew that there was no way they were going to give up on Maxine. “Adam’s right. We all have to start somewhere and it’ll get easier, I promise,” Ria assured her gently. She knew that Maxine could do this, they had all struggled with control at one time or another but they had all learned to get better at it and she didn’t doubt that Maxine would as well. Just when things seemed to be getting better she started to lose it and the ground beneath them started to shake once more. It was clear just how upset she was and Ria wished that she knew how to help her but nothing she said seemed to do any good. Ria really was at a loss for what to do but as she watched Adam she knew that there was something that he could do and Adam had realised that as well. Taking a deep breath, Ria placed a hand gently on Adam’s shoulder and gave it a squeeze. She knew that he didn’t like having to use his mind control ability but right now it didn’t look like he had any other choice. They had tried to calm Maxine down without it but nothing seemed to have worked so this was their only shot. Sure enough it seemed to work straight away and Ria felt a smile touch her lips. “You did it,” she beamed, knowing that there hadn’t been a doubt in her mind that he would. Catching sight of the blood that had started running from his nose, Ria was immediately concerned and she made her way to Adam’s other side in case he needed her. “Yeah, let’s get out of here,” she nodded, taking his hand in hers. “We should get you checked out while we’re there,” she added in a hushed voice so that only Adam would hear her, knowing that using his abilities always took a toll on him. Giving his hand a squeeze, she led the way down the corridor and in the direction of the nurse’s office. ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ uneasy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam instantly felt relieved when he saw that Maxine had finally calmed down, his mind control working seamlessly which had his shoulders sagging in relief. The consequences of using mind control usually were symptoms that matched fatigue. He'd feel a bit sluggish for a while as if he's been awake for a few days now. There was a headache that would stick for a while, and most noticeably, the nosebleed. It felt like a fair trade, if you ask him. Using something like that shouldn't come easily or else it'd be something that can be manipulated and used for selfish gains, even though Adam would never do something like that.
A soft smile appeared on his lips at Ria's words before he nodded his head. He, too, was pleased that it had actually worked or else Maxine really would have spiraled out of control. "Yeah." He breathed out, feeling relieved to see that it had worked and now Maxine was a lot calmer, her breathing finally sounded normal and her body was a lot less tense as if she was constantly stuck in a fight or flight state. When he noticed that Ria was now by his side, his smile remained on his lips before he shook his head as if to reassure her that he was okay. He pinched his nose to stop the nosebleed as best as he could because right now his priority was to get Maxine to the nurse's office.
And upon their arrival, the nurse instantly came over and took the girl to the bed where she finally laid down. When the nurse offered to check him over, he quickly shook his head. "I'm okay, really. It looks worse than it is." Adam assured the nurse almost instantly. "Please just take care of her." Adam added, offering the nurse a reassuring smile and eventually she seemed to buy what he was saying before she gestured for him to go into the bathroom and get cleaned up. He looked over at Ria, nodding for her to come along so they could give the nurse some space to look after Maxine. "Are you okay?" He asked Ria once they were alone, the sound of the faucet running was clear as he turned it on so he could wash the blood away the best he could. "It was a bit crazy back there, huh?" Adam asked with a breathless chuckle following because yeah, no shit, Adam. "We make a pretty good team though, don't you think so?" Adam added with a soft smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he finally straightened his back after he was satisfied he'd gotten most of the blood wiped away.

Ria knew what it was like to lose the control that she worked so hard to hold onto start slipping through her grasp, when she first shifted it had taken her a while to feel like she was starting to get things under control and even then it hadn’t been easy. It had been the same for Adam, he had struggled as well and Ria was pretty sure that it was something that they all went through at some point. Right now it was Maxine’s turn to struggle with control but Ria wasn’t going to give up on her and neither was Adam. Fortunately Adam’s mind control managed to calm Maxine down when all other attempts had failed but Ria knew that it would have taken a toll on him. The nosebleed was the visible sign but Ria knew that a headache would start soon enough if it hadn’t already and it would take Adam a while to get his strength back. Ria hated the toll that using his powers took on Adam and she knew that she was going to have to make sure that he took it easy and let himself recover once they’d made sure that Maxine was alright. She knew Adam didn’t like using his powers but this time it had been necessary and it had stopped a lot of people from getting hurt. “You’re amazing, you know that?” Ria asked Adam gently. It was true, he had managed to get Maxine to calm down and she really was proud of him for that. She was also worried about him, though, and she stayed close to Adam as they made their way to see the nurse. Thankfully it wasn’t long before Maxine was in good hands and Ria shook her head as Adam promised the nurse he was okay and said it looked worse than it was. “You really need to learn when to let people take care of you,” she said once they were alone. Following him in the direction of the bathroom, Ria reached for a washcloth and she held it under the tap for a minute before holding it out to Adam. “I’m fine, I’m more worried about you,” she said, her eyes locked on his as she spoke. “Are you okay?” she asked carefully. “I know you told the nurse you are but you don’t need to hide anything from me. Has the headache started yet?” she asked, a look of concern on her face as she looked over at her boyfriend. “You can say that again,” she laughed as Adam said it was a bit crazy back there. “You did so well with her, you knew just what to say and do,” she said, unable to deny that she was proud of him for that. “We definitely make a good team,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she let her hand rest against his cheek and leaned forward to kiss him. Pulling back a few moments later, Ria reached for the washcloth once more. “You missed a little bit,” she said, reaching up to wipe the last of the blood away. ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ uneasy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam felt a shy smile form on his lips when Ria called him amazing. "I don't━" Adam paused to let out a shy chuckle. "I don't know about amazing, but um, thank you." Adam still had a lot to learn, but it felt good to use his powers for the greater good rather than constantly having them slip out of control. It was a much-needed change, really. It showed that he had changed, progressed from that scared kid with so much anxiety that he'd just fuck up the lights wherever he goes, to this guy who was capable of stopping a fellow student from doing something she'd regret for a long time.
Adam smiled a little at Ria's next words because he knew they stemmed from a good place that cared, a lot. "It's okay, she's already got Maxine to look over. S'just a nosebleed." Adam assured Ria in a soft voice. 'Thanks." He said when she offered him the wet washcloth. He used it to wipe away the blood as much as he could. His expression softened when Ria told him that she was more worried about him before asking if he was okay. "I'm okay, really." Adam assured her. He didn't always like having people worry about him so much but only because he didn't like being a burden. "It's just a bit of a dull ache, if it gets too much, I'll let you know, I promise."
Adam's lips stretched into a gentle smile. "She reminded me a lot of myself. So I just said what the younger version of me wanted to hear." Adam replied when Ria told him that he knew just what to say and do. He knew that she was just a scared kid who needed help and that what she did does not define her in any way. He just hoped that she'll forgive herself for the damages done and will accept the help that the school so eagerly offers to those in need. "Felt pretty badass." Adam said with a chuckle falling from his lips not long after and when Ria leaned in to kiss him, he was all too happy to return the gesture. When she leaned back, so did he, his eyes opened slowly and his brows soon shot up when she mentioned that he had missed a little bit of blood. He let go of the washcloth so she could get it for him. "Thanks." Adam said with a gentle smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I think this calls for a celebration, doesn't it? How do you feel 'bout going out together to eat something?"

“You might not believe it but I do,” Ria said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at Adam. So many people might have just given up on Maxine but he hadn’t, he’d managed to keep her calm for the most part and when that hadn’t worked he had managed to use his abilities to get her to stop and make sure that she didn’t hurt anyone. Maxine had definitely managed to scare a lot of people and she had caused some damage to the school but it wasn’t anything that couldn’t be fixed and it would have been a lot worse if Adam hadn’t been there to help her. Ria knew what it was like to feel afraid of what you were capable of, she had felt that way after she first shifted but being at the school and having Adam and her dad in her life had helped her learn how to control herself and she knew that in time Maxine would learn that as well. “We both know what nosebleeds mean for you though, they mean you’ve overexerted yourself,” she said gently, unable to deny that she was worried about Adam. All she wanted was what was best for him and even though she knew that using his abilities had been the only thing that he could do, she still hated seeing the way that using them took a toll on Adam. He hadn’t asked for the abilities he had now but she knew that he was trying to use them for good and that made all the difference as far as she was concerned. “You’re welcome,” she said as Adam thanked her. Ria still wasn’t completely convinced when Adam said that he was ok but she knew that she had to trust that he would tell her if anything was wrong. “You’d better, you’ll be in trouble if you don’t,” she assured him, taking his hand in hers and giving it a gentle squeeze. She knew that Adam was the suffer in silence type of guy but he didn’t have to be like that around her. He had helped her while she was getting used to everything after shifting for the first time and she knew that she wanted to repay the favour and be there for him. She had tried to do that after his girlfriend died and now she wanted to be there for him again. “It seemed to do the trick, I think she connected with you,” Ria admitted. She had seen the way that Maxine had started to calm down while Adam was talking to her and it really had been great to see. She was pretty sure they had all been there before at some point, they had all struggled for control at one time or another but they looked after each other and that was something that she had learned pretty quickly after starting at the school. “I bet,” she laughed as Adam said it felt pretty badass. “I’m proud of you.” She knew none of that had been easy for Adam but he had done so well and she was certain that Maxine would appreciate it once things settled down. Kissing Adam gently, Ria reached up and wiped away the bit of blood he had missed before setting the washcloth down. “Much better,” she said, her smile returning as her eyes met his. “I think you’re right, something to eat sounds great. Shall we head to the Grill or would you rather somewhere else?” she asked, knowing that it didn’t really matter to her where they ended up. ADAM HAWTHORNE

━ uneasy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam felt a soft smile tug at the corner of his lips at Ria’s words before nodding his head to show that he believed her. “I know. It’s just because I used mind control. That’s usually what happens when I do.” Adam tried to get some of the blood wiped off to the best of his abilities. He let out a chuckle when she told him that he’ll get in trouble if he doesn’t let her know. He made a gesture of him jokingly crossing his heart to show that he’ll keep his promise this time around.
Maxine reminded him a lot of himself when he first joined the school. He was lost, scared, and his powers were so out of control that he kept sending the school into blackouts just because he couldn’t control his wired nerves. But, with time, things started looking up and he was a lot less worried about his powers getting out of control because he knew how to keep his breathing steady and how to not let everything affect him and that honestly did the trick most of the time except for those moments where he could no longer control his breathing but those moments happened so far apart that it gave him back some resemblance of control and normalcy in his life.
“I’m proud of you, too.” Adam replied earnestly with a gentle smile resting on his lips. He glanced over at his reflection before his smile soon returned when he couldn’t see any traces of blood anywhere. Yup. Definitely much better. “Let’s go to the Grill.” Adam agreed with a quick nod of his head following. He held up his hand for Ria to take. “C’mon, let’s go, then.” He started to make his way out shortly after, leading Ria to the exit of their school and to the area where the parked vehicles were. He’d gotten a scooter to help him commute from his home to his classes. It certainly made a lot of things easier. He handed Ria the extra helmet that he had before he put on his helmet and got on. He switched the ignition on. “Hold on.” Adam told her before he started driving them to the Grill. He wasn’t a reckless driver by any means, but he wasn’t slow, either.
Adam parked in front of the Grill in the designated area for motorcycles and got off not long after. “Wanna eat something in particular? I was thinking of trying one of their combos today. I don’t know if I wanna go for meat or chicken, though. Everything sounds pretty good right now.”
