Maya is Ethan's older sister but only by four months. She and Ethan share the same dad and during the pregnancy her mum decided that she didn't want to be a mum and she signed over her parental rights when Maya was born. Her dad got married shortly after and she was adopted by Mrs Machado who is below. She knows that she is just as much a part of the family as any of them are.
Maya was always the one to cry the most when they were younger and it was Ethan's presence that was the best way to soothe her. Maya was the one who talked first but it was Ethan who crawled and walked first. They have always been close, practically twins even though they actually aren't, but they also sometimes bicker like most siblings do. Maya sometimes likes to tease Ethan about being into comic books and superheroes but he always sticks up for her if she is picked on. As they got older they became popular and Maya helped Ethan keep on top of his studies. To this day they are still incredibly close and Ethan is protective of her.
During their sophomore year their dad fell sick and Maya and Ethan both stepped up to try and help their mum. Ethan ended up getting a part time job to help with the bills as well but whether Maya did or not is open. Eventually their dad died and after graduating from high school all three of them felt like it was time for a fresh start. Maya and Ethan were both accepted into Whitmore so the whole family decided to relocate and they have been living in town for the last few months. Maya doesn't know anything about the supernatural world.

She and the kids' dad dated while they were in high school but drifted apart after graduation. When they reunited he was in a relationship with Maya's mum but he was never unfaithful, he only broke the relationship off when he found out that she had been cheating on him. About six weeks after he and Mrs Machado got together they found out that his ex was pregnant. Mrs Machado was really understanding and after they learned that Maya's mum didn't want her, they decided to raise her together. She adopted Maya when she and Mr Machado got married and four months later Ethan was born prematurely. Originally she worried that he would have health complications but he was fine, he just had to stay in hospital for a while to get stronger.
During the kids' sophomore year Mr Machado fell sick and died and she became a single parent. After they graduated from high school the three of them decided on a fresh start and they moved to Mystic Falls.
