— he has no notion of loving people by halves —
River's long strides took him closer to the motel with only one goal in mind. Find Mal. He wasn't there to give him the 'if you hurt my sister, I'm gonna hurt you right back' talk. He was there to ask him where the heck he was keeping his sister. He prayed relentlessly that his sister would be there, that she'd be the one to even answer the door because then, all the anxiety he was feeling right now would evaporate into nothingness. For a little context, River had texted his sister earlier today to check up on her but the message remained on 'DELIVERED', so he sent another message to grab her attention, but it was never read by Krista. He'd tried calling her, too. But each time, the call went through and it rang, rang, rang, then the call disconnected. He'd left her countless voicemails asking her to just acknowledge him and reassure him that she was okay but she never called him back. Maybe he was overreacting in the eyes of some people, but he knew his sister. She wouldn't leave him on delivered, wouldn't just let him call her endlessly without answering him back in some way or the other. So, of course, he left his job in the middle of his shift and made his way to her dorm room but he couldn't find her despite the fact that she had classes today, so she should've been there. It only made him worry more.
He knew something was wrong, but when he went to the police for help, they didn't share the same concern. They instead told him that his sister was an adult and reminded him that she had a history of running away, so what was stopping her from repeating that today? He'd tried to convince the police officer that Krista wouldn't just run off like that, but the officer instead told him to wait. "If you're not gonna help me find my sister, then I will find her myself!" He'd yelled at the officer before getting out of the police station. He came here to ease his own anxiety but instead, it grew tenfold.
He only had one last place to check and that's how he found himself in front of Mal's door. He hesitated for a moment, praying yet again that his sister would open the door, and knocked on the door. "Hey!" He called out from where he was. "Krista! Are you in there?!" River yelled, knocking rapidly on the door before he stepped back. "Mal!" He called out the man's name, too. He knocked again, refusing to let up until someone answered him.

Mal shot the girl a look as she threw herself at the door of the cell. Her dark eyes were glowing yellow, flickering like her fuse was blowing – and not in the pissed off way she threw aside the food he’d just pushed through the bars. ”It’s no good pitchin’ a fit, you ain’t getting' any more of that just cause you threw a tantrum. You either eat it or wait til the mornin’, it’s no skin off my nose either way sunshine.” He bared his teeth in a smile as she threw herself at the bars again, a spike emerging from her wrist, stopping two inches short of his nose. Clucking his tongue, he gave the end of it a tweak before he stepped back. ”Try that again and I’ll snap it off. Don’t think it’ll get rid of it though, pretty sure we can just have it growin’ back.” Like the tail of one of those lizards that’d scurried away from the men when they’d fetched up to get water on board somewhere near Dominica. He laughed as he strolled away, throwing up a hand in a wave to her. Come the weekend she’d be gone anyway, planted out in the woods like the rest of them. A seed of some wonderful genus something new and interesting sprouting at the bottom of the pit they’d claw their way out of. Unless they buggered themselves up after that and he was sent back out to put in a fix, he had nothing more to do with them. She could walk past him in the street – or sleep with him – and she’d not have a clue. Unless Krista tried to put a fix in again.
The sigh slipped out, heavy as an anchor, as he locked up. That was a problem he would have to deal with sooner or later. Somehow the professor had it in her heart not to have her booted out of Whitmore, but it meant she was still here, the fight hanging over everything here like a storm on the horizon. At some point it would break, likely frying his backside worse than the professor had, the pendant that still hung beneath his shirt, bumping warmly in the crease of his chest as he climbed into his car. Mal glanced at himself in the mirror, cursed and started up the car. He wasn’t caving and crawling if that she was waiting for. Was the blood he managed to snack on at work half as satisfying? Did it practically beg him to take his fill? Nope and nope. It didn’t get him arrested though and it didn’t put his bare arse out there for the entire town to see, either though, did it?
There was no light glowing behind the curtains at the motel when he pulled up. The other rooms were all lit up, a couple still containing the long overdue remnants of Christmas in twinkly little lights – not such a temporary spot eh? – people living out their tiny existences behind the thin plywood doors and walls thin enough that he’d had to check with the neighbours the morning after, just to see if Krista’s accusations had reached eager little ears. Nah, it had been safe enough that he didn’t feel in the least bit shy about shooting the grizzled old grump who strolled out of a room at the end of the row a smile and a sloppy salute in greeting. No response, but what did you expect in a place like this.
It would’ve taken an act of God to have him admitting that the emptiness of the room bothered him when he arrived. No Krista bouncing on the bed, offering herself up like a succulent little lamb for him to take his fill. No warm leaching into the bed, clinging to the sheets that would end up tangled and on the floor before the night was out. Nothing fresh at all. Mal grunted, throwing his coat over the back of one of the chairs at the chipped little formica table in front of the window. He crouched in front of the mini-fridge she’d cleared out, muttered under his breath when he found there was only two bags left. The emergency supply had dwindled practically to nothing. Well, Krista wasn’t gonna get her wish now, there was no way he’d be ale to avoid feeding on someone else … and enjoying it too.
Fangs snicked out as he stood, nipping until the blood squirted into his mouth in a thin stream, might as well make it last after all. Mal flopped down on the bed, starting to toe his boots off. The first thump on the door stopped him in his tracks, his hand stilling on the remote he’d picked up, eyes narrowed and aimed at the door. The sodding brother. He’d have recognised that nasal whine anywhere, even without the holler of her name. River barked his name in the middle of those knuckle rattles. Him too now? Grumbling under his breath, he carefully stowed the blood bag upright between two pillows, cradled carefully so he wouldn’t lose a drop while he got shot of the idiot here.
He opened the door slowly, the acerbic smile sharp on his lips. Reclining against the door frame, he made shooing motions with his hand, trying to back River up. ”You ever thought ‘bout waitin’ for someone to actually get up and get to the door before you go bangin’ again? There’s probably people tryin’ to sleep in here.” Not him, probably not half of them if they were night owls of a sort. ”You’re climbin’ the wrong tree anyway, son. Your sister’s not here. I’d check the dorms if I was you. They’ve probably not driven her out with torches and pitchforks, but it’s just gotta be a matter of time, eh?” And then Krista would probably be back at his door, sobbing out apologies, clinging to him, her throat right there, the scent luring him in until he pressed his mouth right there. He cursed her as he swallowed the taste of her drawn blood, it was all her fault that she wasn’t there.

— he has no notion of loving people by halves —
River raised his fist, ready to knock on the door a few more times but then the door opened and his expression turned hopeful but then his eyes relaxed on none other than Mal and his hopeful expression evaporated in an instant. He tried to peek over the man's shoulder but it was impossible to see anything with the man standing in the way. The gesture to get him to take a step back worked as he took a singular step back, his lips parting and closing a few times without offering anything back for a moment or so as he scrambled to gather his scattered thoughts. He was here for a reason and even though the man carried an intimidating aura around him, River wasn't going to allow himself to be intimidated by him. He was on a mission to find his sister, for god's sake! "I don't care about other people!" River nearly yelled but instantly felt bad for doing so. Not because he was afraid of hurting Mal's feelings but because he actually did care about other people and he didn't want to be a huge inconvenience to them, but you know what? He had no problem being a huge inconvenience toward Mal. He pressed his lips into a thin line as he took a moment to really calm down because he didn't want to wake anybody up. Just because he was having a terrible day, doesn't mean that others should, too. Except for Mal. He should have a terrible day, too. But judging from the way he spoke of his sister, he wasn't worried about her, not like River was. "She's not here?" He repeated, the words making his guts twist into a knot. That feeling from before that something bad had happened only intensified from there. He paced nervously, bottom lip lodged between his teeth as his frown only began tugging at his features.
He stopped his pacing in order to answer Mal. "I did check the dorms, she wasn't there." River whisper-yelled as he tried to peer inside of Mal's motel room again but to no avail. "She wouldn't just disappear like that, okay? I know her." Okay, maybe she did disappear like that before, but this time felt different. They were closer than that now, weren't they? She'd tell him if she wanted to leave town. He'd ditch work and everything else in an instant to be with her if she wanted to put some distance between her and Mal. But he knew his sister, she wouldn't just give Mal up so easily despite the fact that things were rocky between them at the moment.
"Look," River paused when the door to one of the motel rooms opened and a man stepped out. He didn't say anything, he just walked away. Did they really have to do this here out in the open? "I know things between you two are rocky, but, please put that aside for now, alright? Something's not right. Call it a gut feeling or whatever you'd like, but she's not answering my calls, texts, she's not in her dorm, and according to you, she's not here. Isn't that at least a little bit worrying to you? I'm hitting a dead end here. It's too early to report her as missing but I can't just sit and do nothing. Do you have an idea about where she might have gone?"

The last time he’d seen Stream or Creek, or whatever it was Mr and Mrs May had decided to curse their son with, he’d been hustling Krista out of the sheriff’s station before the bad influence in her life could get her locked up again. It wasn’t funny how he was coming looking for her here now, maybe thinking he’d chained her to the bed, or convinced her to dump her family again – like that decision was on him. He could’ve just thrown the door open, let Boulder … nope, River, that was it, still ridiculous if you asked him, see for himself that Krista wasn’t there, but the bloke was like sand, bland looking, but irritating all at the same time.
Mal clucked his tongue, letting his lips curve into a smirk in the scruffy surround of his beard. The scarecrow stood there, mouth opening and shutting like his brain wasn’t working fast enough to catch up with it. He adjusted his weight, crossing his legs at the ankles like he was settling in for the ‘big brother’s here to put you in your place for breaking his sister’s heart speech. Hazel eyes rolled sideways, then back sharply as River snapped. ”I’d say they’re gonna care about you real soon. I’m sure with the rapport you built up with up with the sheriff’s people you could slide right out of the slap on the wrist if they get called.” There was no way he would, though, once the almighty gob here started yapping to them about how his sister had disappeared in his company – like Krista hadn’t stormed out of the motel room all of her own huffy accord.
Touching a finger to his lips, Mal hissed out a sssh, probably unnecessary since River was already clamping down. He dropped it, looking at Krista’s brother expectantly until he asked if she was there again. Mal started to laugh, still not backing up to give him a look in the room. Wherever it was Krista had swanned off to, she hadn’t told her brother first and it had him all antsy, like a cat on a hot tin roof, pacing back and forth, his teeth chomping on his lower lip. If he wasn’t careful he’d bite clear through it and then Krista wouldn’t be the only May he had a little snack on.
River stopped pacing at the news that he didn’t have Krista hidden under the bed. Mal frowned as River snapped again, with just enough sense to keep his voice down a little. ”Maybe you should take that as a sign that she’s out havin’ some fun.” And that wasn’t happening here anymore. Dark brows hitched, his teeth baring with his grin. ”I’d say not as well as you think, mate. Where did she do the first time she turned up here? I’d call that disappearin’, wouldn’t you?” Krista had run to Mystic Falls looking for answers, leaving her parents and her brother none the wiser about where she’d toddled off to. She’d found them, and the bloke who’d put those fang marks on her neck.
The ‘I told you so’ almost rolled out on a cackle as one of the motel room doors opened. Not Krista, not someone coming out to tell River here to keep his mouth shut either. Shame. It would’ve put an end to this quick. Look. Mal huffed out a breath and lifted a hand to grind his finger tips against his eye lids for a moment. ”I’d say somethin’ ain’t been right with your sister since she decided to try and get herself kicked out of school. Did you ever think she was just tryin’ to duck what happened?” His mouth was pinched as he straightened up. Mal stepped back, sweeping his arm into the room – maybe it was just proving that he had nothing to do with this, maybe he was trying to get River out of everybody else’s earshot for now. The alarm bells had started to ring, just low for now, in the centre of his chest.
Gut feeling for him said that Krista hadn’t gone anywhere except just far enough to put the fear of the almighty in them. Maybe River had cracked down on her after the video, maybe this was all about him instead. ”You’re right, it’s too early. The cops aren’t gonna pay a bit of attention to a grown woman who’s only been duckin’ her brother for a few hours. Did you try that blabbermouth she rooms with? Long Jane Silver. If Krista’s gone with anyone it’d be her.” He reached for his phone though, cursing himself for even caving on what could be just a story spun to purposefully put him on edge about what hornet’s nest Krista had gone and stuck her nose in.
The number was still in it – he should’ve deleted in immediately when she’d dropped her little cannonballs in his lap – the phone on the other end ringing again and again until Krista’s voicemail cut in. ”You can stop playin’ your silly games now, love. Call your brother back before he crawls any further up my backside about wherever the hell you’ve gone.” He raised his brows at River as he hung up. ”Happy now?” he asked. Probably not, that was the way this family seemed to roll after all.

— he has no notion of loving people by halves —
River didn't want to get escorted out of the building and possibly to the back of a police car, so he knew that he should keep his voice down but he couldn't help it because at the moment, it felt like he was talking to a wall or someone deprived of any feelings and that might just be the most accurate description of the man before him. He wondered that if it would even be possible to get to him, to show him that the situation was serious and it wasn't just Krista acting out. River placed his hands on his hips and looked down at the ground, counting backward from ten to stop himself from bursting out again because he felt like this time around, someone will definitely call the police to file a noise complaint or something.
River frowned a little and looked away for a moment before he shook his head. "No, she'd tell me. At least reply back with a single text to let me know she's okay, she'd do something because she knows well that I worry." River was stubborn and if this was Mal's attempt at getting him to leave, then it wasn't working. If anything, it made him want to stay. "You've spent enough time with her to at least know that it doesn't sound like something she'd do, Mal. She's not out there havin' fun." His expression fell a little bit when Mal brought up her first disappearance. He hated to admit it, but Mal had a point and back then, he'd considered the possibility, too. What if her break up from Mal had pushed her over the edge? What if he had failed to see the warning signs that were right there before his eyes all along? What if he had failed as a brother once again?
River swallowed past the lump in his throat again, the edges of his lips dipping down into a small frown before he started shaking his head. "No, no. Back then, it was..." River released a shaky sigh, shaking his head again. "It was different." River concluded, although it really didn't sound like he believed it. "She wouldn't do that again."
River grimaced a little as he thought about the whole messed up situation between her and Mal, though he still stubbornly shook his head at the suggestion that Krista was just ducking somewhere, waiting for things to blow over. "She would've told me. I went to see her, when the whole thing happened. She was really upset, but she didn't say anything about disappearing like that. She would have told me." Does he know that for sure? Not... really. But he hoped that Krista knew that she could talk to him about anything, could tell him anything.
River released a soft sigh, just remembering that the police had refused to help him look for his missing sister was enough to make his mood turn even more sour. "No, I didn't try her roommate. I just didn't see her in the dorm and came here hoping that I'd find her with you instead, but she's not here either." River admitted. Should he have searched for the roommate? Could it be that they are together right now and River was just worrying over nothing? There was hope beginning to show in his eyes as he noticed that Mal was finally, finally doing something. He watched as he called his sister and when Mal started talking, River's lips parted in surprise, actually thinking that Krista had answered the call but from the sound of things, it was Krista's voicemail and just like that, the hope in his eyes vanished entirely and his lips pressed together into a thin line.
He grimaced a little at Mal's words because just hearing the voicemail might wind up making Krista spiral at his harsh tone. "I — would have been if you were at least a little nicer to her." He grumbled before he seemed to realize something. Voicemail. His sister didn't answer Mal either. He had a feeling that even if she had mistakenly missed River's calls, she wouldn't have missed Mal's. His sister seemed smitten with the man, so she would have answered his call right away.
And just like that, the call that was supposed to ease his worries only made him worry even more. "She didn't answer you," River whispered, his eyes finding Mal's once more. "She didn't answer your call." He probably sounded crazy, huh? "Don't you find that at least a little bit suspicious? Even if you two are on bad terms right now, I have a feeling she'd have answered your call because maybe, just maybe you were calling to apologize. So why didn't she answer you? Please tell me you can feel that something's off, too. You can't be that emotionless." River could feel his own anxiety eating away at his insides, leaving him feeling unbelievably worried. "Something happened to her. I can feel it." He was certain of it now. "If you're not going to help me find her, then I'll do it myself."

He’d always known that Krista would screw it all up for him here eventually. Despite the fact that he suspected she would’ve done anything he’d asked without having to compel her before she’d gone poking around on his phone, she was wild. Unpredictable. Jealous, motivated by those green eyes of her to the point where just glancing another woman’s way probably would’ve had her spewing like Vesuvius. It wasn’t like he hadn’t seen it, or felt it. The first rumblings of it had come down the street outside of Campbell’s, ready to get rid of her competition by towing her car away. It had worked, he’d sank his teeth into Krista here afterwards, but it’d also proven the lengths she’d go to when she wanted him all to herself. And he hadn’t considered that quite enough. The silence was never gonna last. It was always gonna blow again, or come banging at the door. It might as well have been a big, shiny brass band and not some drip, practically wringing his hands at the thought of someone coming to slap his wrists for the disturbance. If only he’d be so bloody lucky. Faint lines sprung up between Mal’s brows as he watched River have some sorta mental communion with himself at his warning. Hands on his hips, staring down at the ground. He could probably hear the cogs spinning in his head. Eventually getting close to his assessment of the situation. Krista had stormed off again. Mal’s smile sharpened if that was possible, back teeth grinding til it felt like he had sand trapped between them. ”Again...” he said tightly. ”Cause she did the first time. This is Krista we’re talkin’ about. She sees anythin’ that interests her then she’s off like a toddler after some sweeties. No thought about tellin’ anyone.” And he’d been that thing for months on end. That laser like focus – scary as it was – had been on him for months before it’d burned itself out. The heat of Krista’s temper searing him before she’d quenched it in her tears.
He’d spent enough time with her. Maybe too much before it had all blown up. He was almost certainly Krista had been waiting for him to come looking for her. Crawling in on his knees, begging for forgiveness for his crimes, pleading with her to take him back. Fat chance. Mal raked his teeth over his upper lip. Shutting the door in the kid’s face wouldn’t have been out of order. This was his room, his life, he didn’t need to have the May siblings charging into it all whenever they felt like it again. He was almost resigned to being dragged into this as he stepped back, another cackle rolling out of him as River tried to act like Krista was contrite for releasing the video. ”You’re givin’ your sister too much credit. If she found somethin’ else that pissed her off the same way she’d do it all over again. She wasn’t upset about bein’ caught ruinin’ some woman’s life, she was upset because it didn’t do what she wanted it to.” And that meant Krista was gonna be just as unstable, as unpredictable as she’d been from the start.
How Kitty put up with her was honestly beyond him. She’d been the good little angel on Krista’s shoulder through their entire – no, he wasn’t even gonna think of it as a relationship – grassing him up when he’d tried to have himself a little taste. Probably convincing her that giving him and her brother a little shock would have them both doing just what she wanted. ”I suggest that’s your next stop then. She loves to talk and the two of them are joined at the hip. Find Kitty and you’ll find her.” Mal sighed. Of course he didn’t have Kitty’s number, why on earth would he, but Krista’s was in his contacts, soon to be deleted. The minute she picked up, he was hanging up the phone, using it as the confirmation of her being just fine and his excuse to shut the door in her brother’s face.
Come on, Krista, pick up the sodding phone. Stop playing silly buggers.
It wasn’t quite what’d dropped out of his mouth, although Krista deserved that much and worse – it was close though. Mal’s empty hand clenched and released into a fist over and over as he talked, the only sign of nerves he displayed. She’d probably listen to the message and delete it immediately, but that wasn’t his problem now, was it? He huffed out his amusement as he ended the call and dropped the hand holding the phone to his side. ”You mean it should’ve been ‘darlin’, I’m so sorry, come back and let me make it all up to you?’” Mal cackled at that, shaking his head. ”Course she didn’t answer me. She’s still sulkin’, that’s all. You need to stop worryin’ about her and let her get it out of her system.” River’s words were getting under his skin though, leaving his shoulders to creep up towards his ears, his hand coming up for her to drag it over his beard. He couldn’t be that emotionless – well, her brother didn’t know him any more than Krista did.
The phone buzzed in his hand before he could wave River off, wishing him good luck. Mal glanced down at the screen, not recognising the number. He smirked at River, shaking it in the air to show him the incoming call. ”Told you she was just messin’ around. You can unbunch your panties now.” Connecting the call, Mal lifted the phone to his ear. ”’ello love. I think you better turn up and get your …” Brother. Out of my room. That wasn’t Krista’s dulcet tones, they were even more annoying, a dark edge to an accent he’d last heard whimpering clear across the country. ”Still got your stellar grasp of English, eh Pierre? Long time no hear.” Because there was no bloody way on earth he’d stick around in San Francisco to see who came walking out of that warehouse.
Now his heart did start to ache, like the skinny little Frenchman had plunged a hand into his chest to clamp his fingers around it. He’d left the pair of them there – alive, thanks to him – but that was meant to be the dissolving of their partnership. Apparently Pierre hadn’t taken the goodbye like he should’ve done. ”Well, y’know, when you get the right people involved, things stop fuckin’ up.” The Doc had always been the one who was gonna manage it. Now he’d flip his sodding lid. Krista was gonna have to put up with him not being here now, because they’d be out of town as soon as they could manage it.
Her. Mal’s gaze flicked up to River, his expression going grim. Maybe the brother wasn’t hearing this, but he heard Krista sob in the background, knew the sound of it well enough. It racked through his own chest, a shudder in his rib cage that had a whimper rolling out of his own mouth. Mal bit down on the sound, clamping teeth into his tongue with a grunt to bite it back. Jesus, was he that sodding worried suddenly? It wasn't the first time he'd felt angsty in the last few weeks. Krista had gotten her claws into him and little bits of her had started to bleed out into him. This was why you didn't get attached to things - not that Krista had thought he was capable of it - cause when you did you opened a door to all sorts of stuff you didn't wanna deal with.
Tears crept into Mal's eyes, he could feel a burning sensation working its way through the muscles on one side of his neck, just like he had done when Josiah had bitten him. Echoes of a past suddenly in the present. His arm curled protectively around his chest, almost like he expected that wound to open up too. ”Lay one fuckin’ hand on her and you’ll lose it.” Would lose it this time. It was gonna be a short trip into the lab for Pierre and whoever the fuck else he’d brought with him. ”If she’s not alright when I get there I’ll make San Francisco look like toddlers throwing a strop.” He didn’t bother commenting on the schedule, just cut the call off the second he heard go dead on the other end. ”We’re goin’,” he grunted at River. ”I know where she is.” He pushed out the door past him, dragging it shut behind them. There was just a stop to make first – wasn’t dumb enough to go in there unarmed after all.
