MY LITTLE BIRD WITH AURORA DE MARTEL
It had taken far longer than he wished it to for this moment to come. He had assumed that handling Strix business back in the old world would be swift and he could return to his current plan within a matter of a few weeks. Instead...
...well, he knew Aurora would be cross with him.
He had done his best to keep an eye on his sister, even from afar. He had not wanted her to come to Mystic Falls, not when the Mikaelson family was so close. They might have talked of revenge at one point in their long history but the years had taken their toll on Aurora's mind. He did not want to expose her to anything that might break it permanently. Like he assumed Klaus Mikaelson would. Lucky for him the hybrid bastard of the family seemed to be elsewhere and therefore there was some safety in leaving her in the small town. She was not alone of course. Whether she knew it or not there had been a trusted member of the Strix keeping an eye on things and reporting back to his boss.
That's how he knew about this place.
Tristan ran a hand over the arm of the sofa he was seated in. It was hardly what he would want for her but they could fix that now that he was here (and here to stay). His eyes traveled over the small apartment with a critical gaze. He could see touches of his sister and that warmed his heart but he couldn't help but wonder who else had seen the inside of his place. After all, Klaus was back in Mystic Falls and from what he understood, Aurora hadn't been alone (or so his man said). He only hoped that he would find her in the right frame of mind for a happy reunion.
Speaking of --- he could hear footsteps in the hall.
He remained seated, a small smile crossing his face when the door opened and there she was. The light of his life, the reason he pushed forward to ensure that the world would be a better place for vampires. "Aurora," he began, standing at last, his hands automatically moving to smooth out any wrinkles in his pants. "Rory." He couldn't help but throw out the pet name he had for her. It had been too long since they had last properly spoke. "It warms my heart to see you once again." Now he braced himself to see whether or not she returned the sentiment. He never did know how he would be received. But that never stopped him from coming.
She was his sister after all.

When Tristan left Mystic Falls Aurora couldn’t help but feel lost and somewhat lonely. What was she supposed to do whilst he was off with Strixs business? Apparently nothing. He told her to sit tight and that he would be back soon. She asked to follow, but her brother insisted she stayed in Mystic Falls, probably too much of a liability to take along with him. She was his own personal ticking time bomb. Fragile and to be handled with care, like a delicate little porcelain doll. One slip up could lead to her being permanently broken. Smashed beyond repair. Damien didn’t view her in that light though, like something that needed to be fixed. He saw her as a strong-minded beautiful woman who was perfect the way she was. It would have been deluding to think that she had been truly left to her own devices in Mystic Falls. Her brother had slackened the reins slightly, but not fully. Yet as time went on Aurora started to believe that maybe Tristan had trusted her to look after herself. Her meetings with Damien were becoming more and more public, even inviting him into her apartment and waking up next to him some mornings when work had stolen him away from her. She was playing a dangerous game, knowing her brother could walk in at any moment, but she was too consumed by happiness to think about that. The apartment she had found was somewhat decent, albeit nothing compared to her childhood home back in France. Maybe one day she and Damien could own something a little bigger. Hopeful, but it was a thought that had been rattling around inside her mind for a while now until it was quashed by the realisation her brother would never allow that to happen. She slotted the key into the apartment door and beyond that silence awaited her, although she paused once inside. Something felt off, as though she wasn’t alone. Damien could have been waiting for her in the living room or worse, Elijah. Carefully she moved through the hallway, pushing the door to the living room open. Tristan. He greeted her with the nickname he had for her before rising from the sofa. “Tristan.” Soon enough she broke into a smile, stepping closer toward her brother and placing her arms around him. “I was beginning to think you would never return.” Obviously the question on her lips was why had he returned. MY LITTLE BIRD WITH AURORA DE MARTEL
Today would be about reuniting, about once more being together. They had been pulled apart throughout the centuries for one reason or another --- usually due to her fragile mental state. As much as he wanted to keep her with him, he recognized that it was not conducive to Strix business. Add to that, it was not safe or healthy for her. He had always vowed to put her first, even if it broke his heart to part from her. At least this time there had been a time limit in place. His business dealings were a temporary setback and now that they were behind him, Tristan hoped to settle into life in Mystic Falls once again.
He gave her a small smile, enjoying the way she said his name. There was no malice, no anger --- both good signs. He had braced himself for both, ready to deal with her changing moods with the ease of someone who had done it for a lifetime (many life times actually). His arms slotted around her, pulling her in tight to him, his forehead resting against the side of her head. He had missed his during his travels. There were not many that he actually allowed to touch him --- he sometimes ached for those he did.
"I could have been better in my efforts to communicate. For that I am sorry, Aurora," he began as he pulled back enough so he could see her face as they talked. His hands slid back enough to rest on her arms. Just because he had kept her from the Strix didn't mean that he should have maintained radio silence. She did not deserve that, especially when she relied on him for a great many things (some might call it arrogant to think so but he knew the truth). "I am back now and I have no plans to leave any time soon. I had meant to settle in Mystic Falls before things went a little off kilter. Everything is back on track now." Never mind that her being here had never been part of the original plan. She was supposed to remain in her current treatment in hopes that they would finally find a way to quiet her trouble mind. But she was here now and he would just have to find her the help she needed in Mystic Falls.
"How have you been?" His eyes traveled over her as if he could see the signs of her inner turmoil littered across her physical form. "Please tell me the truth, Rory."

A message would have been nice to announce he was returning to Mystic Falls, but why would Tristan want to do that? Alerting his little sister he was coming back, giving her an opportunity to make sure everything was in order before he arrived. She was kind enough to leave a voicemail for Tristan before arriving in town like a hurricane, but centuries back it was impossible to do such a thing so instead, she would catapult into his life unannounced after escaping from whatever institution he had left her in, leaving a trail of bodies along the way. Sometimes she would show up straight away, other times she would leave it a while before turning up, just to make her brother sweat a little especially when she was bordering on feeling erratic. But also to prove that she was capable of standing on her two feet and didn’t need to be sectioned. “No need to worry brother. I am just happy you are back.” She broke away from Tristan, a small smile on her face as she did so. She could love a thousand people in her life but none of them would top the love she felt for her sibling. It was the only thing they had in common with the Mikealsons. Family trumped everything. Their devotion to one another was unmatched. “I am pleased to hear that.” She would need to warn Damien urgently that it wasn’t safe to show up at her apartment without announcement. At least she didn’t need to sneak him out the window like some naughty teenager, he could vanish into thin air in a heartbeat. One minute they were in Mystic Falls the next minute they were soaking up the rays on a beach in Mexico, which would terrify Tristan. This man had the ability to whip Aurora over to the other side of the world instantly. She cast her mind back over the past few months, running over the events. Nothing too drastic had happened. Yes, she had threatened Elijah with an axe, nearly got killed by a hunter, and robbed a bank, but that was all low level stuff for Aurora. She broke into a warm smile, “All has been well… I have been feeling good within myself.” Thanks to Damien. Granted he hadn’t necessarily kept her on the straight and narrow considering it was his idea to rob the bank, but he’d kept her from spiraling into darkness. Without Damien, there would be plenty more pieces for Tristan to pick up upon his return. "What brings you back?"TRISTAN DE MARTEL

MY LITTLE BIRD WITH AURORA DE MARTEL
Her delight at seeing him made up for so many things that had gone wrong in his life as of late. He should be months into his plan for Mystic Falls but instead he was starting from scratch thanks to the mishap in the old world. He knew it was unavoidable but he hoped that he made himself clear when he moved to come back to this place --- there should be no more uprisings, he was not to be disturbed, any further failures would reflect on the European faction. He refused to worry too much about it, instead wanting to focus on his sister and Mystic Falls.
"I am happy to be back. I was too long away from you, Aurora but we will make up for lost time." It wasn't just his trip away, it was all the time that they had spent apart while she had been trying to heal her mind. He had seen her at her lowest points, watched as she retreated so far back in her psyche that he feared that he would never be able to reach out to her again. Even standing here, seeing her in good health and spirit, he worried that some day he would have to witness that again. It seemed like a cycle doomed to repeat itself for the rest of their eternity. For now, he refused to dwell on that, instead embracing the idea that this all could be a new start for them both.
He broke out into a genuine smile when she spoke of feeling right within herself. It did him more good than he realized to hear that. He couldn't stop himself from reaching up to cup her face with his hands, his features softening. "I am so glad of that, Aurora. I will admit that I was worried when you made your way here after abruptly cutting your treatment off..." That was one way of putting it. "But I see now that it has done you well to be here." He knew that there were reasons for that and he was determined to get to the bottom of them even without her knowledge. He wanted to be sure that if the time came he could protect her (even if it was from herself). His hands fell away and he took a step back.
"As for my reasoning on being here, I am sure it is not lost on you that the Mikaelson family is here --- and that is key to my decision to use Mystic Falls as a base while I strengthen the Strix's foothold in North America once more." He turned on his heels and moved to look out the window at the small town. "But you needed worry about the details. I will take care of everything."

Each time she was ripped away from reality and thrown into one of those God awful institutions she despited it, but if Tristan were to do that again, it would push her a little too far, knowing Damien was out there without her. Her brother would come to visit her from time to time, but would Damien? He’d struggle to even find her. So, she had to put on her best performance for Tristan. There couldn’t be even the slightest slip in her behaviour. “Not to worry. It has given me some time to settle into Mystic Falls.” To find her feet alone without having to think about their vendetta with the Mikaelsons. Her brother held her face in his hands, as if he could study her features to determine how her mental state was. It wasn’t always obvious that Aurora was secretly spiralling inside until it was too late. She managed to keep her mind away from swaying toward the darkness though. “The time in the monastery did help but I was feeling much better and I wanted to be with you Tristan. Here. In Mystic Falls.” The same thing happened that always did. Her mind started to tell her she was better and she didn’t need to be contained anymore, so she would break free. Perhaps she wouldn’t have acted so rashly if Tristan involve her in his plans in the first place. Aurora hated being left out. Even though she asked she knew his abrupt return was something to do with the Mikealsons and the Stirx. Her brother's mind was fixated on getting revenge. Once again, he was looking to exclude her from his plans as if she was a liability. She let out a small huff of frustration as he peered out the window, “But I can help with these plans of yours… so please share the details.” Tristan was putting his trust in a group of vampires who could be compelled by the original family to spill their secrets and forgetting they couldn’t invade Aurora’s mind in the same way. MY LITTLE BIRD WITH AURORA DE MARTEL
Settle? He truly hoped that his sister could settle. It was all he ever wanted for her. Their life since the moment the Mikaelsons entered it had been tumultuous at best and it had taken a severe toll on her. He just wanted her to be at peace. He had seen her the opposite of that and it had cut him more deeply than he could let on. He was known for his stoicism, whether it be truly him or some remnant of Elijah in his brain, he did not know. Either way, his face could remain neutral while his mind was collapsing. Some might accuse him of not caring but he knew the truth.
He hoped his sister did too.
"And how have you fared in Mystic Falls? I see you have settled into a home. But have you made connections, found people to surround yourself with. I know how you crave such things. You do not do well alone." She, more than anyone, should not be alone for long periods of time, left with only her thoughts. Those thoughts could turn on her, manipulate her in ways that people could not understand (he did, of course, he understood her better than anyone).
He broke into a smile at hearing she wanted to be with him. "All I want, sister, is for you to be happy and for us to finally have a chance to live as we should have all those years ago. Without outside inferences. Without threats to our lives or the thought of death looming in the background. Maybe this will be the place we can do such a thing." There was one rather large obstacle. Or rather a few. He could not see Mystic Falls being big enough for all of them but he wasn't planning for it to be. He was planning on being the last one standing (with Aurora by his side naturally). He would take the land that bred the Mikaelsons and make it his own.
It felt fitting to him.
Speaking of, he turned his attention to the task at hand, knowing that she wanted to be involved. He took a deep breath, his face a mask of concern. "Rory, that means allowing you anywhere near Niklaus. I am not so sure that is a good idea. What happened between the two of you...I know that has left a mark and I do not want to risk reopening old wounds when you should be continuing to heal instead."

She had spent a thousand lifetimes lying to her brother and a few more wouldn’t hurt. She hated lying to him, but he left her with no choice. One whisper of the truth and he would react badly. She was prepared to hide Damien from him for eternity. It was the only option. “I have made a few friends, yes.” He hadn’t seemed to care about her loneliness when he locked her away with the monks. They didn’t exactly hold much of a conversation with her either. He was right though. She surrounded herself with others in order to drown out the voices in her head. It had been working perfectly well since she arrived in town, with minor hiccups. Life was never going to go back to the way it was before they were turned. Their first one hundred years of being a vampire were spent running away from Mikael before finding out they had been forced to live a lie. Unfortunately by that point the damage inflicted on Aurora’s mind was irreversible. Despite her doubts, she smiled and nodded, “I agree. This could be the fresh start we need.” She knew there was nothing fresh about the town given the Mikaelsons were living so close by. She had spent centuries dreaming of a life where it was just her and Tristan without her brother’s need for revenge creeping into every conversation. The compulsion had not only fractured Aurora’s mind but it had also filled Trsitan with a thirst for revenge that seemed impossible to quench. The Mikaelsons were unkillable. She was washed with relief when Tristan mentioned Klaus, meaning he had no knowledge about Damien. He was still concerned about the hybrid. “Tristan. I do not wish to have any involvement with Nik nor his retched family.” Maybe if she offered him some of the truth, he would dig too much into what had happened whilst he had been away. Not only had she sought out Elijah but Hope too. “I made contact with Elijah whilst you were away. I was worried and I thought maybe he had taken you.” Spiralling into paranoia was the correct term but when she came home to a note from her brother saying he was leaving town for a while immediately her mind jumped to Elijah, convincing herself he must have taken Tristan. MY LITTLE BIRD WITH AURORA DE MARTEL
He smiled as she answered that she had found friends. He was glad of that. He hated the thought of Aurora being isolated with her thoughts. It never ended well and it pushed back her progress along the way. He wanted nothing more than his sister to be well, to be truly happy. He felt like he had been fighting for that for centuries. Some would argue that he had gone about it in all the wrong ways but they didn't understand Aurora like he did. He regretted all the times he had to shut her away but he hoped that from here on out, her connections in this world would allow her to grow stronger.
He would just have to meet those she chose to surround herself with. Ensure that they were truly the best for her overall mental health.
"When do I get to meet these friends of yours?" he asked, his voice casual. It was clear that he was intending to do so no matter what but he hoped that Aurora would volunteer the information herself. He wanted there to be trust between them. He needed there to be trust between them. Being in Mystic Falls with his plans to even the score with the Mikaelsons for good while also worrying about his sister was a fine balancing act. He needed to ensure that there were not any pieces that would tip them one way or another.
"I will do what it takes to ensure that you have that fresh start, Rory. You know that right? Most everything I do I do for you." There was not a lie in that. He was devoted to making it right for her. The Mikaelsons had taken something from Aurora and he hoped that by taking something from them, he could eventually make Aurora whole again. Give her the happiness that her mind had robbed her of time and time again. "I look forward to making this a place where you, myself and the Strix can finally settle for a time."
He was surprised to hear her speak out against the idea of Klaus. "Are you telling me that you no longer harbor any feelings towards the beast? That you finally have let him go?" It was a bit hard to believe given the length of her seeming obsession. He knew better than to take the news at face value. He did, on the other hand, have the good sense to look sheepish when she admitted why she had contact with other members of the Mikaelson family. "I apologize, Rory, for worrying you. I should have been in contact sooner. I should have let you know what I was planning. I can see that you are stronger now. I should put more trust in that."

Sometimes the lies spilled out of her with ease, flowing effortlessly off her tongue. It wasn’t the type of relationship she wanted with Tristan, but she’d drop the ball too many times with him. It was his way of showing he cared about her though, so she tried to keep her frustrating to a minimum. “I am sure something can be arranged.” Immediately she thought of Enzo, but quickly dismissed him. Introducing Tristan to male friends wouldn’t be smart. Maybe Rose could help her drag together a small group or even humans compelled to lie. Aurora was constantly in Tristan’s mind when he was making decisions, but sometimes the decision didn’t work in Aurora’s favour yet she was told it was for the best. Everytime she was sectioned the last thing she would hear was her brother telling her it was to help her before he would disappear down the corridor. She was unfixable, even he should know that by now. “I am looking forward to calling this place our home.” Her, Tristan and the Strix. An invisible extension to Tristan. She’d let go of Klaus, but arguably she had replaced him with someone else. Someone better. Someone else to pour her love into and receive the same level of devotion. Despite cutting ties with Klaus she didn’t like hearing Tristan refer to her ex-lover as a beast. Elijah was the enemy in their love story. “I have realised he is not worthy of my love… I do not care about him anymore nor do I love him.” Damien was the only man for her. Tristan had spent centuries worrying about his younger sister, so she wasn’t surprised when she was greeted with a stream of questions about her mental wellbeing. She’d fed him a mixture of the truth and lies, but her mind was strong now. The neurotic side of her had been suppressed. “Not to worry Tristan. You have been busy but the important thing is that we are back together and I am here to help execute your plan.” Although she wasn’t sure that her brother would want her help. Sometimes it was best she sat on the sidelines. TRISTAN DE MARTEL - wanna wrap up with yours?

MY LITTLE BIRD WITH AURORA DE MARTEL
"The sooner the better. I am very interested in meeting those you found worthy while I was gone." There was a tone of finality in his voice, indicating that he wouldn't be denied such a meeting. He might be willing to give his sister the freedom she craved (though he would keep a close watch for fear of what might happen next) but she had to give him something in return. He didn't think he was asking for much. After all, any connections she might have made had the potential to sway her one way or the other. He just wanted to make sure that it was in the right direction. The safe one. He couldn't stand the idea of having to lock her away again. It would break him.
Instead he would focus on her desire to make this place their home. He would root the Strix here deeply, let it shape the future of this town and hope that in the end, he was doing the right thing and not just catering to her whims. At least he could be assured that those whims did not include Klaus. For he believed her when she said that she no longer loved that monster. "This is what I wanted for you, sister. I wanted you to know that you are so much more --- that you deserve so much more." He gave her a smile before coming close to her. His hand found the back of her head and he leaned forward to place a kiss to her forehead.
He stepped back, his hand falling to her shoulder. "We will never be parted again --- and soon enough, we will have full rein in this town. It can be both your safe haven and your playground. For now, I need to go check in with the Strix but I will be back soon. We can catch up properly."
