Their dad told the boys they had to face their fears head on instead of letting them control them, which is why he didn’t want to buy Raik a night light when he was five because he was scared of the dark, but his mom went ahead and bought one anyway. He didn’t fear the club in that sense, but he tried his best to avoid the place. Every time he saw the building he would remember how his body lay inside those four walls for months on end whilst Leah desperately tried to find a solution. It was the only time he had ever been thankful to her, but it didn’t erase the fact it was partially her fault he died. But now as he was standing outside the empty club, staring at the heavy doors, his mind didn’t automatically jump to his death. It leaped to Ayla and their dance together on Halloween. He was so close to following his heart, rather than listening to that voice inside his head that was telling him to stick to his morals. This was Remzi’s woman, not his, but what pissed him off was that Ayla wasn’t the only woman in Remzi’s life. Leah was still hanging around, more so than before. If Remzi knew what was good for him he would have dumped Leah and settled down with Ayla, but this was Remzi. The man always chose the most reckless and chaotic routine in life, leaving Raik to walk down the sensible path alone. Ayla seemed like the type of person who would walk alongside him though. Hand in hand. He needed to get those thoughts of Ayla out of his head, which was difficult considering she was so integrated with Raik’s life. Permanently. Hopefully, any feelings that had rinsed to the surface over the past few months would somehow disappear even though they had done nothing but grow stronger since the day he met her looking all cute and innocent crumpled up on the floor in his clothes. Raik imagined if he confessed the truth to his sibling Remzi wouldn’t even care, probably encouraging him to crack on with her. Their relationship meant nothing to Remzi, which Raik was certain Ayla could see. Remzi could be a great actor when needed, but he clearly didn’t give a shit about what Ayla thought of their relationship. He was only putting on a performance when they were in front of their parents, especially their mom who had already chosen what hat she was wearing to the wedding. Raik didn’t even want to bring himself to get measured for his suit. Anything to delay the wedding. Perhaps if he delayed it Ayla would see Remzi wasn’t the man she should be walking down the aisle for. For what felt like the millionth time that day he tried to push thoughts of Ayla out of his head as he pushed open the doors of the club. A few drinks at Campbells Bar with his colleagues always ended up leading them to the club, which Raik usually protested but the previous weekend he was dragging along anyway. The following morning he woke up with a patchy memory and a ticket for the coat room, yet no coat, forcing him to pull his fragile body from his bed and toward the club. The only person mulling about behind the bar was Kit. He wasn’t necessarily angry with Kit, rather pissed that Kit hadn’t spent an extra few seconds inspecting the corpse in the freezer and realising it was Raik. “What the hell bro?” He said as he approached the bar, “I was in that damn freezer for months and you didn’t even realise it was me?” He kept his voice low as he spoke even though he was convinced there was no point as it felt like every man and their dog was involved in whatever shit was going on downstairs. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ KIT WAS GLAD TO BE HOME AGAIN. IN FACT, HE was kinda glad to be working again, too━under normal circumstances. The trip to London was cool, and he’d never really been on a vacation like that. Any other place he’d travelled was for work… okay, real work. Where they’d have to set up shop and integrate themselves into a location while possibly having to destroy the area with gunfire before they left.
There was no gunfire in London. There was everything but that. Kit was surprised he’d made it out alive.
But he was glad he had. He got back, Thanksgiving happened, Bo was born, and shit with Katja… it felt like it was headed somewhere. He never thought he’d consider settlin’ down with someone who wasn’t even American, but look at him, right? That was growth. Maybe the fact that his life had slowly begun to slot itself together was part of it. He was happy with what he’d built in Mystic Falls, even if his world-renowned skills as a Special Forces soldier were going towards serving drinks and trying to wrangle a myriad of things that didn’t want to do any real work.
Shifting behind the counter to setup for the shift, Kit busied himself with cutting citrus. The schedules had already been set for the next two weeks; he’d done that on the computer in Hector’s office earlier. Upstairs and downstairs, because Hannya was still slacking in that regard━actually, Kit figured she straight-up forgot it was supposed to be her task because he’d been doing it for so long. Plus, he wasn’t getting any special treatment from her anymore to constitute picking up her slack.
But ah, fuck it. He was cool with Hector, and he was sure the guy appreciated him, so that was worth more than a little extra here and there. If Kit ever needed it, he had an old-ass vampire on his side━someone to protect his rapidly growing (solely thanks to Freyja and Theo) family, though Kit hoped it was never needed. But who knew in this fuckin’ town.
Hearing the door swing open, Kit glanced up with furrowed brows, not expecting anyone else for a while. He didn’t recognize the guy’s face as one of his colleagues, either━it took a moment to finally set in. Raik.
He hadn’t seen him in…
Ah, shit.
“That was you? Listen, man…” He puffed out a breath, mostly just stalling while he scraped at his mind for something to say. “People look all fucked up after they die. I try to avoid the whole-a downstairs, too━I’m sure ya know why.” His shoulders tensed, hands peeling away from the fruit to find a dishcloth to wipe his hands on. “Plus, it wasn’t…” He lifted a hand, motioning vaguely to his own throat. Honestly, Kit hadn’t looked farther up than that. It was hard for him. It brought up too many memories of other shit. “... Pretty.” He settled on the word with a huff, feeling like it wasn’t good enough to encompass everything that went on there.
He settled both hands on the lower counter on his side of the bar, leaning into them and frowning lightly at Raik. He wasn’t trying to be an asshole or snub a brother in arms━that was the last thing he wanted━but apparently he’d done it anyway.
“You’re back now, though, right? That’s the good part of this. Apparently death ain’t so final no more, which is a little fucked up, but hey…” He shrugged lightly and smiled, still unsure how he felt about it. He was glad his brother could have a second shot after Kit ended the first go-around, and that Raik could return to his family━even if Remzi didn’t seem tamer with him back. The body━Raik━had disappeared a while back, so if the timeline in his head matched up, he woulda already been with the livin’ again during London.

Raik hadn’t spent too long staring at his dead body all frozen and stiff, but he didn’t catch a glimpse every now and then. At one point he laughed at to himself that it was the only time he’d ever looked paler than Remzi, but then he was hit with a wave of sadness when he realised he couldn’t share that joke with his brother. In fact he couldn’t share the joke with anyone because no one could hear him or even see him. He faced crippling loneliness on the other side. Not the type of loneliness he sometimes felt when Remzi went out with his friends all night when they were younger whilst Raik was busy doing school work. It hit harder. He wasn’t completely alone though with Leah popping by to say hello when it suited her. He’d never had thought there would be a day where he would actually want to engage with her, but he needed some human interaction. Now all that human interaction he was encountering was somewhat overwhelming, but he forced himself to endure it. Even forcing himself to endure the Ruby Slipper Club. Anything to feel normal again. Raik was hoping he would have bumped into Kit in the park or even in the Grill where they could have had a nice catch up, but no, the first time seeing each other since the military was when Raik’s beard was full of ice and Kit was dashing off to the other end of the bar, furious about the fact there was a dead person in the freezer. Raik was hoping Kit would have lingered just a little longer to see it was his old co-worker lying amongst the ice cubes. The others didn’t seem to have a problem with staring at Raik's lifeless body, but then he soon found out the place was rammed with vampires who had probably seen countless dead people before. Raik’s eerie face didn’t faze them. So granted, Kit wasn’t all that comfortable with staring at dead people, but Raik was still pissed. Without thinking Raik raised his hand too, pressing his fingers against his skin where the wound once was before his hand dropped. “Yeah… it wasn’t a pretty death.” Nothing could have prepared him for seeing himself slumped at the side of the hotel bed with a gaping cut across his throat. “And here I was thinking I’d die whilst on tour… an explosion or being shot at.” He’d survived all that only to be murdered by two people who thought he was Remzi. They were living in some kind of fucked up world where death was only temporary. He nodded in agreement, “I still don’t know how I feel about it all… one minute I’m all alone and invisible, the next minute I’m doing shots at the bar and waking up with a vicious hangover.” He had no idea how to process it all. It wasn’t like there was some support group out there for people who had been brought back from the dead. “It seems like you ain’t one of them.” He gestured downstairs, “So what are you?” KIT CLARKE

━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ “DO I EVEN WANNA KNOW?” KIT ASKED, THOUGH he was sure he didn’t. Curiosity got the better of him, however, and he’d listen if Raik answered. It just might… spiral into some other shit if it was really that bad. But, for now, he was willing to risk it. It just seemed so barbaric and… personal, and he couldn’t imagine Raik pissing off anyone enough to do that.
Kit scoffed softly. “Ain’t we all think that?” His smile was grim, though, riddled with a darkness they both likely shared. Raik had to deal with a lot of the aftermath, though━the men that had been shot at and through, limbs missing, all that bloody, horrific shit. Kit saw it, but it wasn’t his job to wrap them up day in and day out.
He always thought he’d go out like that, too. A valiant death for a soldier, forever emblazoned in who you were. After you were gone, they’d always say, “He died for his country,” and there was something so poetic and so fucking sad about that; like getting shot at by some guy was the highest badge of honour.
Kit got that medal anyway. He wasn’t proud, though, not when he lost so much of his team. Not when his fucked up, puzzle-piece brain decided to see his little brother as another enemy and take his life, too.
He would’ve been better off dying when that IED went off… but then Frank wouldn’t have made it, either. And maybe none of them would’ve made it to Mystic Falls, Theo woulda never met Freyja and given him a new niece, a new family, and Kace would’ve never met Cassie, woulda never come back. Well, Kace would’ve still been alive and wouldn’t have needed her, but… still. Shit worked out the way it was supposed to.
But did God really want them all comin’ back to life? He figured it wouldn’t happen if so, but then again, a lotta bad shit happened ‘cause of the other side. Whatever. Fuck. He wasn’t gonna shove Raik’s miracle back in his face with a “But do you really think you should be back?”
“Yeah,” Kit puffed, thinking about Kace and how rough all of that must’ve been for him. Must still be, especially when Kit was worried about him constantly. But, clearly, he had a reason to be. “Gotta be the first time you’re kinda thankful for a hangover, huh?” He chuckled, wondering if he would be. Now, maybe not so much━but back when it started? If he could’ve given it up in a minute? Yeah, probably━but then again, that would change everything.
And if Raik got hangovers, that ruled out werewolf or anything that healed quick. He likely knew about vampires from Remzi (no way that dude could keep his mouth shut) and, if not, then he did now. And didja always just stay the same when you came back?
“Vampire? Fuck no,” He scoffed, then raised his palm to Raik, “No offence.” Kit added, settling on the counter again. “Werewolf.” He finally admitted, momentarily allowing his eyes to flash blue before blinking them away. He normally wasn't so forthcoming with it, but Raik wasn’t just anybody, and Kit had fucked up by not recognizing him or doing anything about his body. “Whadda ‘bout you?” Nodding upwards, his brows drew together with curiosity. “Since it ain’t either of those. You a warlock or somethin’?” Not only was it a good guess, but it was also one of the only other options he wanted to consider. Psychic was possible, obviously, but kinda the same thing. And he didn’t think (he hoped) there wasn’t another banshee around. He could only handle running to so many high-pitched wails.

No. Kit didn’t want to know what happened but he was a man who’d served his country and had also witnessed death first hand, although it didn’t make much difference. Raik’s heart still ached when he had to deal with deceased soldiers, no matter how many he’d dealt with before that. He knew there would have been a point where it would have all become numb, but he jumped ship before that could happen. “I used in some weird supernatural sacrifice… I don’t really understand what happened but they were following a ritual… they slit my throat then strangled me with something… it felt like wire.” The only thing he was thankful for was the fact he couldn’t remember everything. The pain was somewhat numbed by whatever the hell was pumping through his veins. A bullet through the head wouldn’t have been too bad. It would have been over and done with. He’d made it through all of that to be killed in a case of mistaken identity. He left out that fact when explaining what happened to him though. He didn’t want to paint Remzi in a bad light, knowing he’d probably jump at the chance to defend his brother if Kit said anything. Raik broke into a small smile. He was thankful he was alive again, even if that meant nursing a hangover from hell. “I’m getting too old for this shit, man.” Drinking until the early hours of the morning should be a thing of the past now, but Remzi had spent months telling him there was no age restrictions when it came to “getting fucked up.” but that was easy to say when you’re a vampire. His eyes widened slightly when Raik mentioned he was a werewolf. “You do that whole full moon shit?” If he was to look at some popularity hierarchy of supernaturals, he knew vampires were balancing towards the bottom. They were the children who told the teacher there was homework set the night before just before she dismissed them. He didn’t really know where werewolves fell on that scale. “Just human.” And he intended on keeping it that way. He wasn’t itching to jump at the chance of becoming something special. He pulled the ticket out of his pocket and placed it on the bar, “Do you know where I can pick my jacket up from? I was too trashed to remember to grab it last night.” KIT CLARKE - wanna wrap up with yours?

━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ “JESUS,” KIT MUTTERED. HE DIDN’T USUALLY like usin’ the Lord’s name in vain and shit, y’know, especially since trynna do better, but this definitely called for it. Raik’s throat wasn’t just cut, he was fuckin’ ritually sacrificed. Kit figured he shouldn’t-a been surprised, but, despite where he worked, Kit kinda lived in his own little bubble. Sunday dinners and watchin’ Hazel sprout up overnight (literally) had made his life soft and ultra-domestic. It was a nice change, ‘specially when no one he knew ever got ritually fuckin’ sacrificed. “That fuckin’ sucks, man; I’m sorry.” It didn’t matter that he was back now; Kit knew very well that how someone died could have a ton of lasting effects.
But a hangover? Shit, man, he’d welcome one at this point. He figured Raik would, too━just another symptom of being human. He chuckled, knowing exactly what Raik meant. Kit had given all that up for his domestic life, too━Raik just had to get away from his shitty little brother if he ever wanted to change.
He came clean pretty easily to Raik, assuming he was something, because who fucking wasn’t in this town? His question made Kit pause, however, ‘cause who was somethin’ and didn’t know were-creatures changed during the full moon? Finally, it came out, and Kit puffed out a breath and rocked back on his heels, dragging a hand down his face. “Fuck, really?” He laughed incredulously. “And your brother’s a vamp? That’s gotta suck, huh?” Not because Raik would want to be one (would anybody?) but because they lived so differently to everyone else.
When Raik asked about his jacket, Kit nodded, reaching over to grab the ticket. It wasn’t usually his job, but Raik was a friend, and Kit also had to make up for the whole body-in-the-freezer thing. “Yeah, man, I’ll grab it.” He walked off to coat check, returned a few minutes later with Raik’s jacket, and gave him a one-armed hug and a pat on the back. Hopefully he’d be able to put some distance between himself and Remzi soon, otherwise Raik would never get the change he wanted.
