Some of the inmates tried their best to get the festive mood once 1st December hit by putting what little decorations they were allowed up around the wing, but it was always a difficult time of year for everyone. Another Christmas away from their family and for some that included children. Chase always visited near Christmas day, putting some money in his commissioner by way of a present. His parents always sent a card too, with scribbles inside about how much they missed their oldest son, but not to the point where they would come and see Mikey in prison. They were happy to bury their heads in the sand, acting like their son was away at some Christian camp or some shit. It was easier for everyone that way. There would be extra two placemats on the table on Christmas day, awaiting their parents' arrival, but who knows whether they would come. That journey from New Orleans to Mystic Falls was a little too far for them, at least that's what their dad would say. There was a rush of relief when Chase announced the two should spend Christmas in Mystic Falls this year. Going back to New Orleans was dangerous territory for Mikey, knowing the Agnellis’ could be waiting for his arrival. He’d like to say they had moved on from that, finding another poor soul to take his people, but he never knew with those people. The gang could have gone through a shift of faces by now and one of them could have been lurking in Mystic Falls. No. He couldn’t let himself drift off toward that idea. That bitch from the cop station had got inside his head, telling him that people don’t just walk away from those sorts of people scotch free. There would be a heavy price to pay, as if spending two decades in prison wasn’t enough. The decorations placed up around Chase’s apartment were far easier on the eye compared to those glued up around his old cell, which usually consisted of whatever he could find in the box of mismatched ornaments provided by the staff. Some pieces were older than Mikey. It was the one time of the year when everything seemed quite on the wing too. No one dared to kick off, knowing phone and visiting privileges would be suspended in a heartbeat. Anyone who looked like they were about to step out of line was slapped back into place by the other inmates, Mikey included. On the surface it was easy to predict Mikey was a miserable bastard when it came to Christmas. It was a festive period that was filled with joy, bright lights, and over excited children. On paper, it was everything he hated but he actually enjoyed Christmas. Their parents had always made the day extra special when they were younger, even though they were living on the breadline. They did what they could. One medium sized turkey, basic trimmings and a few crackers were placed on the table. Chase was always determined to break off the bigger part of the cracker so he could claim his plastic prize from inside and Mikey would put in some extra elbow grease whenever it came to pulling a cracker with his brother. He didn’t even want the prize inside, always giving it to Chase anyway. Mikey dragged himself from bed just after 9am, his body feeling just about refreshed and ready for another day of work. Flipping burgers and deep frying fries. It wasn’t his first career choice, but that ship had sailed by now. He was just grateful for the pay check at the end of every week so that he didn’t have to rely on his brother anymore. He threw on a clean tshirt from the stack of clean clothes in the corner that he hadn’t gotten around to hanging up and a pair of joggers from the floor before heading off towards the kitchen. The coffee machine has just flicked off when he spotted someone out of the corner of his eye enter the kitchen. He should have known by the height of the figure it wasn’t Chase, but as always he was oblivious. “Fancy a coffee? He turned around with a small smile which soon dropped from his face when he realised it was Roxxi wearing just Chase’s tshirt. “Oh… hey.” He tried to sound friendly, but his tone came across as flat, “I… um… I guess I should offer you a coffee.” Or he could scurry out of the kitchen and back to his bedroom so he wasn’t forced to stand face to face with the woman his brother wanted to start a family who was holding back a huge secret. ━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ROXXI FOUND HERSELF SPENDING MORE TIME AT CHASE’S apartment than not. Which she didn’t necessarily mind, especially if he didn’t. She didn’t want to feel like a nuisance. She’d spent most days here directly after the tape was released, save for the times she went home to change and ultimately give him space. Surely Mikey had a problem, but that wasn’t Roxxi’s problem. He couldn’t let it go and just leave her and Chase to be happy and move on without telling him about some ancient fucking history. It truly didn’t matter anymore━especially when Mikey avoided her like the plague.
She still saw him every full moon, only Mikey didn’t know that. Just another piece of information that wasn’t worth letting out.
Of course, neither of them knew she had known who Mikey was when they slept together (both times), and that she’d already met Chase, but even Roxxi had no idea where they’d end up. It was long before she took Chase seriously━long before she’d known how prominent he’d be in her life. Roxxi felt so close to losing him every time something minor happened, like whenever the boat rocked, he’d just slip through her fingers. She wouldn’t let him go, and she wouldn’t let Mikey take him from her with some insignificant bullshit.
Slipping quietly from his bed, Roxxi planted a few kisses underneath Chase’s earlobe, then smooched towards his neck in a long trail. “I’ll start the coffee.” She whispered, shifting almost entirely off the bed before she paused and darted back in, smacking one more kiss on Chase’s cheek with a wide grin. Eventually, she escaped from under the covers and pulled one of his t-shirts over her head, traipsing through the apartment like she owned the place.
Like there wasn’t another person living here.
Roxxi didn’t hesitate as she entered the kitchen and found Mikey, moving towards the mug cupboard with purpose. He was friendly, though, which was incredibly surprising. Roxxi glanced at him with a raised brow, then saw the realization slip across his face, followed by a frown. Nice. “It’s fine; I can get my own.” Roxxi scoffed, reaching up to pull two mugs from the cabinet and setting them down on the counter. “You have my full permission to run off with your tail between your legs now, because I know just how much you hate being in the same room with me.” She frowned, shifting closer to the coffee machine━and, in turn, Mikey. “Scusi,” Roxxi muttered, motioning, with a bland expression, to the machine.

He was happy Chase had found someone. He may not have seemed like it on the surface, but genuinely he was. He was just furious that the woman Chase wanted to settle down with was the same woman Mikey had slept with as soon as he arrived in Mystic Falls. There were so many other women in town so why the hell was Roxxi the one Mikey chose to sleep with? Then again, it was almost impossible to resist her when he found her in the woods. Fresh out of prison after twenty years plus a beautiful naked woman putting it on him hard. He was in Mystic Falls for two seconds before he managed to throw a spanner in the works for Chase’s future relationship. He wasn’t sure whether it would be better coming from him or Roxxi because either way, it was going to hurt him. Mikey knew technically he’d done nothing wrong by sleeping with Roxxi. He had no clue who the hell she was when they met and she claimed whatever was going on between her and Chase at that time wasn’t serious. The problem was they didn’t tell Chase straight away, as Mikey insisted. She promised she’d tell him as soon as possible, but that spanned into weeks then months. A part of him had almost forgotten about Roxxi considering the pair had managed to avoid each other for some time. The only time he was reminded of her was when Chase mentioned her leaving Mikey trying to fight the urge to let the truth spill out. But there she was in the flesh, standing in Chase’s kitchen, reminding him that she exists. “I don’t hate being in the same room as you.” He muttered as he stepped away from the coffee machine, moving toward the door. Toward freedom, but he didn’t reach for the handle. “I hate keepin’ secrets from my brother because you ain’t found the right time to tell him… there ain’t ever gonna be a right time.” But the longer they were leaving it, the worse it was going to be yet it felt like Roxxi couldn’t see that to the point Mikey was convinced she was never going to tell Chase. ━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ SHE WOULD RATHER IGNORE MIKEY’S EXISTENCE ALTOGETHER. Chase was enough of a reminder of what━who━she was, who he was. Mikey was more guilt on top of it, and not just for his connection to the Agnellis. When she thought of him━which wasn’t often, but once in a while she’d hear a shift in his room or Chase would bring him up━she still saw the boy who used to sit across the dinner table with them. Integrated into the family, one of them... until he wasn’t. Roxxi absolutely fucking despised him before he’d gotten Georgie killed, and then she wished only good things for the boy who had to quickly become a man.
Then all this happened, and now they couldn’t be in the same room with one another for more than a few seconds. It hurt her, not only because of the totem he represented concerning the Agenllis, but because he was Chase’s brother. Perhaps her brother-in-law one day, an uncle to her children… the ones they planned to have before the video came out. She wondered if Chase had told him.
Mikey retreated to the door, and Roxxi moved in with that same blank, guarded expression. She started the coffee in Chase’s cup first.
Surprisingly, the Silent One spoke again. She would’ve applauded him, though Roxxi found she wished he would’ve fucking stayed silent.
Guilt curled in her belly as she turned and leaned back against the counter, frowning across the kitchen at him. “No, there won’t be.” She puffed. “I love him; I don’t want to do anything that would endanger our relationship. Why don’t you understand that? And why can’t you just get over it?” Roxxi rolled her eyes and grumbled, but soon heard the door of Chase’s bedroom and the telltale creak of the floorboard in the hallway. Her gaze jumped back to Mikey, and though he’d likely heard it himself, she hissed a whispered, “He’s up.” It was a warning of its own, though she wasn’t sure if Mikey would heed it.

It had been a late one, a long one. Another body found out in the woods yesterday afternoon after the rain had washed away the soil from the roots of one of those big old oaks. The sheriff had dragged anybody available out there, had them tracking through the woods for hours as though a glance at the body, its grey, mottled skin already shrinking down around the bones, hadn’t told her that it had been out there for a while. As he’d expected they’d found jack squat in the way of evidence before the coroner had arrived to take the body. The swirling lights of the deputies vehicles had cut through the dark, leading him back to where he’d parked up, but as he’d got behind the wheel of his car, Chase had felt the grittiness in his eyes. His shift had ended three hours before – the time for dinner, or maybe just a couple of hours watching TV on the sofa with Roxxi or Mikey (if his shift wasn’t ‘til closing) long gone.
She’d been there, the sort of welcome home that had the exhaustion sloughing off along with his clothes. Admittedly it hadn’t been for long. Once he’d settled beneath the covers with Roxxi wrapped around him it had bled back in, what he’d had left in the tank disappearing in a rough breath that shuddered out against her throat. He’d been so deep under that the dreams that still plagued him from time to time – those flashes of gunfire, eyes so black that even the whites got swallowed up, blood slick on his palms as he looked at them – couldn’t penetrate.
The alarm had been shut off last night. If Forbes thought he was dragging in on a Saturday after last night she was crazy. He had places to be, people to convince to stay put right there with him. That was his wake-up, the lips that reached beneath that haze of sleep that still clung, one that he’d grown used to in the weeks since that thing had been sent out across campus, changing everything.
Chase grunted out a ’good morning’ or something like it, smiling slow as he rolled onto his back. The trail of kisses was still fresh on his skin, that last one that smacked his cheek like the full stop to an unspoken phrase of affection. It might’ve been possible to stay in bed, but that was gonna have to be a delayed plan. Letting out a sigh, he sprawled onto his back, fingertips tracing the warmth trapped between the sheets and the covers, his grin growing. It might’ve seemed then that their future was derailed, but it had just been a little shunt to everything. That life, their plans, were just a little delayed.
Yawning hard, Chase brought up both hands to cover his face. A shower maybe. Wash what was left from the woods off of his skin like he shoulda done last night. He ducked his head, took a sniff and grunted again, his nose wrinkling. Definitely on the cards, although coffee would get him there, give him enough energy to drag Roxxi in there with him before he could maybe talk her into lunch somewhere. The Diner woulda been a kick in the balls for his brother, whatever still stung after finding out what Roxxi had done digging into his past bright enough that things weren’t right there yet. They couldn’t keep going that way though, not if they were actually gonna have a kid – this wasn’t gonna be one more thing Mikey was cut out of. He was gonna be an amazing uncle when he got the chance and that was gonna be a kick in the teeth for Emiliano Agnelli after his attempts to leave Mikey rotting in a cell for the rest of his life.
Tossing the covers back, rolling up to sit on the edge of the bed, Chase reached for the t-shirt and sweat pants he would’ve put on last night if it hadn’t been for the welcome waiting for him in bed. He scrubbed hands through his hair, padded out of the bedroom on another yawn. Maybe five minutes on his own in the shower first, scrubbing away that grime before Roxxi got her hands and lips on him again.
The voices rumbled low out of the kitchen. So much for trying to make things right himself. ’Right time … over it … he’s up’. Little snatches that had his stomach sinking as he appeared in the doorway. Dark eyes still ringed with the shadows of a late night flicked back and forth between them, his head dipping finally. Chase sighed, sniffed as he dragged a hand over his stubbled jaw. ”Yeah, he’s up,” he agreed. ”Shoulda figured maybe you’d both be … we should you know … fuck it … this needs to stop. Neither one of you’s goin’ away. I don’t wanna keep dancin’ around it. She’s sorry …” His gaze settled on Mikey at that, his brows furrowing as he tried to drive the apology home. ”This is your place too though and I don’t want you feelin’ like you’ve got no choice, but to put up with everythin’. You OK with this man?” Maybe he was, probably not considering that snapped ‘over it’.

He wasn’t planning on living in Chase’s spare room forever. One day he would eventually have enough money to move out, leaving Chase and Roxxi to plan their perfect life together. It pained him that he had such a rocky relationship with Roxxi considering how much Chase cared about her. It might have been the tiniest bit better if Roxxi hadn’t brought up the whole jail thing, using it as some sly dig at Mikey. It wasn’t like him to linger around to get in the last say. He was happy to let a conversation die but something was stopping him from bolting out of the kitchen. He’d played the part of a lousy older brother for far too long. It seemed like Roxxi was prepared to take their secret to the grave, but Mikey wasn’t. It wasn’t to spite Roxxi or even throw a spanner in the works of their relationship, it was because he would want Chase to do the same thing if he were in Mikey’s position. Be honest and truthful. Two words his parents would never use to describe Mikey after the lies he’d told them whilst growing up. Frustration peaked as Roxxi complained to Mikey, telling him to get over it. “If you love him then you’d wanna tell him the truth… I can’t just get over it and I don’t know how you’re fine keepin’ this from him.” He bit back. His gaze bolted toward the door as the floorboards in the hallway let out a loud creek. “Obviously.” He stepped back from the door quickly, hovering near the fridge as Chase entered the kitchen and it was clear he’d picked up the last of the conversation between Roxxi and Mikey. The tension in the room was apparent, leaving Mikey itching to leave the room but his brother said something. Roxxi was sorry and their little feud needed to stop. Guilt rushed through his body as he looked up as his brother, “So… there’s something we gotta tell you.” He refused to even look at Roxxi, keeping his eyes locked on Chase. If she wasn’t going to rip the bandaid off, then he would because he couldn’t keep the secret locked inside him for a second longer. ROXANNE BRASCHI

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ SHE WAS FINE KEEPING IT FROM HIM BECAUSE THERE WERE A dozen other worse secrets she had to lock inside. Too many had spilled out already and Roxxi hated every time she saw his face twist up in pain. What she’d done with Mikey was a one-time thing born of Roxxi trying to prove something to herself and Emiliano; she was over it now; she let it go━why the fuck couldn’t he?
She would’ve snapped something at him if it wasn’t already clear that Chase was awake. Roxxi narrowed her eyes at his obviously, frowning deeply up at Mikey. Yeah, how could she forget━snake boy acting exactly like he always had. Except on the night of full moons when she sent him off to do… whatever was needed. Another secret she’d never tell.
When he came in, Roxxi offered up a warm (albeit sheepish) smile. She turned, dumping far too much sugar into his mug and stirring it as the machine’s whirring and groaning puttered out. She shoved it into his hand by the time he’d started talking, and then she was shrinking away again, back to the safety of the counter.
Roxxi hugged herself around the middle, smiling shyly when he mentioned that neither of them were going away. She hoped not. Not even after this. She wanted a hundred more birthdays like the one he’d just given her, and endless days of coming home to him━or any of the little Chases they’d have by then.
Maybe. Maybe fucking not, because apparently, their uncle Mikey couldn’t keep his fucking mouth shut.
Her dark eyes ticked up to him for his response, a panic beginning to bubble in her stomach as he spoke. He didn’t say yeah, it’s fine, do what you want, like he should’ve━he was going to tell Chase.
Roxxi sucked in a breath, bringing the flurry in her stomach to her chest. He hadn’t said anything yet, but it was coming.
“We slept together.” She blurted, wide eyes finally turning from Mikey to Chase, “Forever ago. Before I met… no, it was just after I first met you.” Though her eyes began to well with tears, Roxxi smiled as if the memories of that first night would forgive all that’d happened. “I didn’t know…” No. She had to be careful; Mikey would know she was lying. She had to tiptoe around the truth, drop in pieces and hope he put it together himself. “... Not until that morning I saw him in the kitchen. But I haven’t━we haven’t━been together since before I started seeing you.” And that was the truth. Roxxi was carefully avoiding the fact that they’d slept together more than once, but as soon as she realized her relationship with Chase was heading somewhere, she stopped letting their “Full Moon Encounters” spiral out of hand.
Apparently, it didn’t matter anyway; Mikey was completely willing to extinguish his little brother’s relationship if it meant he didn’t have to keep one secret out of God-only-knew how many. And to think, Roxxi had only wanted the best for him━for Mikey to grow out of the life he’d drowned in. He’d just become a snake in another way.
“I’m sorry I didn't tell you, Chase.” Roxxi spoke softly, taking a few cautious steps towards him with her arms outstretched, ready to curl around him if he let her. “It never mattered. It was before you, before us. I love you so much, baby,” She sniffled and smiled again, desperately hoping this was just another thing they could work through.

It didn’t take a cop’s instinct to realise there was tension crackling in the air when he walked into the kitchen. The whispered words he’d caught snatched of had started the knotting process in his gut, Mikey skittering back in the kitchen to hover awkwardly by the fridge only added to it. Roxxi was smiling at him, but it didn’t do a damn thing. This was like a repeat of the night when she’d slipped out, shying away from what had started to build between them. That feeling like he was suddenly on the outside of his relationship, watching it vanish when he couldn’t do a damn thing to catch hold of it.
Chase didn’t bother smiling back, wasn’t sure he could until he cut that tension in here, slicing through it like it was the Gordian Knot and that swipe of the sword, or a sharp demand to just drop all of this was going to solve the problem. By now, he knew that it was never easy, the scars that littered his body and his life were proof of that, but God, he just wanted this one thing – two things. After everything that had happened, surely it wasn’t too much to want both his brother and his girlfriend in his life. She was already stepping away to finish getting him the coffee she’d promised. Chase doubted he could stomach it, especially not that way she was making it now, shoving it into his hand as he spoke. The thick bridge of his nose wrinkled at the smell of the sugar, his lips pinching at Roxxi’s retreat. He stared at Mikey, like he’d see that plea hitting, then at Roxxi, but the way she was hugging herself only had the knot growing tighter. Desperately, he wanted those sit-com mornings, the three of them sat around the kitchen table, talking, laughing, happy in the way that they deserved, not this.
Mikey broke first, surprising given that half the time you couldn’t wring two words out of him. The eyes that were lighter than his own – ironic giving all the trouble Mikey had seen – rose to meet his. Shit. Those knots were dragging his guts lower, trying to drag them clear out of him. ”What did ya mean tellin me somethin’?” he asked hoarsely. Mikey wasn’t talking now though, like dropping that was his one contribution to something he was growing pretty sure he didn’t wanna hear.
Chase’s throat went dry as he glanced at Roxxi. She was looking at him too, sucking in a breath that had that little voice in the back of his head chanting no, no, no, like he could ward all of this off. Without taking a sip, Chase reached out and set the coffee cup down on the table. There were a dozen things he’d expected to come out of her mouth, but that? She’d slept with …
That no, no, no was back, rising up his throat on a wave of nausea. He swallowed, shaking his head without being able to work a single word free. After they’d met, when she’d vanished on him like Whitmore’s version of Cinderella. Tears were welling in her eyes as she spoke, saying she hadn’t known … God, some part of him wanted to believe her. Chase snapped his gaze to Mikey for just a heartbeat and then back. It wasn’t like the two of them looked alike – even after twenty years in jail Mikey still had the good looks, he had … a face only a mother and Roxxi could love. ”And then you lied to me,” he said hoarsely. ”Was that all bullshit?” Had all of it been bullshit? She was swearing they hadn’t, but now all he could see was her slipping out of her bed and into Mikey’s.
If the coffee was in his stomach, it would’ve been churning out of him already, but the last thing he’d had in his stomach had been sunk at the station last night, before he’d dragged himself out of there to come home to her. He’d been so fucking happy to crawl into bed with her, finding peace there in her arms.
His head snapped up as Roxxi started to approach, her arms unfurling like she’d take him right back there. Chase put his hands up, taking a step back, away from where he desperately wanted to be. ”You loved me enough not to tell me. After you sat there and admitted that you’d gone diggin’ into everythin’ about us … after that video came out? You had a million chances to, both of you, but you let me fall in love with you knowing that this was comin’ at some point.” Unless the intention had been to never cop to it.
”Don’t…” he rasped, already stepping back into the hallway. ”I don’t wanna hear how he didn’t matter to you, just like the other guy didn’t. I don’t wanna think … I don’t wanna see either one of you. Get out.” Something tore open inside of him as he looked at his brother. Mikey had come here to him because it was the only place he had to go. This town was meant to be a fresh start, somewhere he could have a life, but now he’d taken that bite out of his. ”Get out, both of you get the fuck away.” His bare feet thudded heavy on the floor as he started back up the hallway, his eyes down on the floor, the bile searing its way up, threatening to add to the stink of grief and sorrow and loss that already seemed to rise out every pore.

He wasn’t going to shy away from the truth and try to bullshit his way out of what happened. They fucked up. Not massively, but it was still a fuck up. Roxxi jumped in though, telling Chase everything. Well, almost everything. She held back the fact they’d slept together more than once, but Mikey didn’t say anything. The situation was bad enough without him piping up and adding further insult to injury. He was surprised she’d even worked up the nerve to tell Chase though as he was prepared to be the one who ruined everything. “She ain’t lied to you about anythin’… I had no idea who she was and she had no idea I was your brother.” Even though he wasn’t Roxxi’s biggest fan he didn’t want her to take all the blame for what had happened. From the moment he found out about Roxxi he spent countless nights lying away in bed trying to figure out the best way to break the news to Chase. Mikey didn’t want to ruin his relationship with Roxxi, even though it seemed like he was on some kind of warpath to do exactly that. Roxxi would argue he was determined to break the couple up, but for what reason? He wanted his brother to be happy and if that was with Roxxi then so be it. It broke him to watch his brother’s heartbreak, even more so when he was partially to blame for it. To no surprise, Chase didn’t raise his arms to embrace Roxxi. There was a frown on his face as Chase mentioned a video, but now wasn’t the time to ask about it. Alongside the guilt, he felt he was feeling bad that Roxxi was getting, what felt like, the majority of the blame. “We couldn’t find the right time to tell you… we’re sorry man.”He cast a glance over to Roxxi as Chase mentioned the other guy. So this wasn't the first time something like this had happened. Lips parted for a moment as he was about to blow up at her for doing this more than once, but his attention darted back to his brother as he ordered them both to leave. He watched as Chase stormed out of the room, footsteps echoing down the hallway until he reached his room. Mikey didn’t bother looking at Roxxi before he left the kitchen too, heading straight for his bedroom to pack his bag. Maybe Chase was better off with Roxxi if she was jumping into bed with other men and apparently filming it. Whatever. He needed to get out of there. ROXANNE BRASCHI
