Raising a hand to the operative in the gatehouse – the fact that the Senator even had one showed exactly how ridiculously paranoid he was here – Rowan pulled out onto the road. If the way Luc had been ingratiating himself to the man was anything to go by, the security would be amped further next week. If it was, then, well, there was one name that would remain top of her list. It was only right after all, considering the two of them were friends.
A half smile played over Rowan’s lips as she tapped at her phone screen and had it start playing her messages. Most were from the office, more details to be nailed down, schedules to be bickered over – the Senator’s contract was tying up a lot of staff, but not all of them – in a town where the supernatural was on practically every corner, people always wanted to feel a little safer. Rowan tapped again as she drifted through the trees. A voice note reminder to send the contract for a new security system and monitoring over to a family who lived south of town. Even if Ingrid decided to make a move back to their home base, things with her family settled, the office here would still have enough business to keep running. That was the joy of a town full of the supernatural. They kept the place lively.
At least Mystic Falls had been big enough to actually have a hotel like the Grey Haven. Some didn’t and years in a motel would have drive her insane in the end. In a suite there was enough room for her and Ingrid to each spread out, no constant treading on one another’s toes. And when Ingrid was away, it felt practically palatial.
Ingrid would likely be at the office when she got back. Meetings had been scheduled across the afternoon and if her boss was anything, it was punctual. Ingrid ran a tight ship and honestly, she appreciated it. Nobody wanted to work for a sloppy boss, especially in a business where one wrong direction at the wrong moment could get you killed – even if you were one of those supernatural things. Luc might’ve tried to rock that boat when he’d arrived, mostly to get under Ingrid’s skin, but she’d give even him credit for being an absolute professional on the job – albeit one who seemed to have a hard time ever keeping his mouth shut.
Rowan glanced at the clock on her phone. Ten more minutes to town. Maybe she’d have time to get changed and shower off the scent of the Senator’s aftershave – it felt like it clung to your skin like cobwebs if you spent enough time in the man’s presence – before Ingrid’s meetings were done and she headed back. Her fingers tapped against the wheel, already anticipating the water pressure that put her apartment back in Washington to shame. They stilled as the engine cut out. It cut back in, practically belching before it cut again. ”Oh you’re kidding me. Come on!” The heels of her hands drummed against the wheel. She was still a ten minute drive from town, probably at least an hour’s walk, less if she ran, but there was no way she was running back to town. It was just a car right? Which meant it couldn’t be that complicated.
The car was barely rolling by the time it bumped off the road and onto the scrubby ground at its side. Rowan climbed out, rounding to the front of the car, what looked like smoke – please just let it be steam – rolled out from under the hood. Chances were falling and soon the light would be too. More smoke belched out as she lifted the hood, leaving her stumbling back a couple of steps. One look and she knew there was no way she was figuring the damn thing out. Give her a handgun and she could strip it down in seconds, but the moment she reached out and brushed her fingers over the engine she was cursing, her fingertips stinging. Stepping back, she jammed them in her mouth, the other hand trying to wave the smoke off. It wasn’t think enough to have her concerned that the engine was on fire, but it did the oncoming car for a moment. Rowan waved with her good hand, waiting until the car slowed before she stepped forward, still shaking off what would’ve been a nasty burn if she was anything but what she was. ”Hi. You don’t happen to know anything about cars do you?” she asked, bending down.

Growing up in Mystic Falls Brady had never known that life could be like it was now. He hadn’t known about the supernatural world back then despite the fact that his dad and best friend had both been a part of it. His dad had kept the fact that he was a werewolf to himself and Julian had been sworn to secrecy when he had started turning as well. Brady didn’t blame his friend for it because the truth was that he would have done the same if the roles had been reversed but there would always be a part of him that would wish that he could have had the same chance to decide whether or not to trigger his curse the way that his siblings had done or at least be prepared for what would happen if they did. His had been triggered in an act of desperation to escape those who had kept him captive for years and he hadn’t had a clue what was going on during his first full moon. Thankfully he had been taken in by a pack that had taken him under their wing, a pack that he was now the Alpha of thanks to another cruel twist of fate that had seen the previous Alpha slaughter half the pack while trying to gain more power for himself. Becoming the Alpha was another thing that Brady hadn’t been ready for but he had adapted the same way that he always did and he had brought the pack to his home of Mystic Falls after his parents were killed and several of their remaining pack members were taken so that they could all have a fresh start. That was something that Mystic Falls had given them, at least. Between Klaus gathering werewolves to turn into hybrids, the Dread Doctors and the hit list that had circulated around the town they had survived so much already but the truth was that Brady didn’t regret bringing them to Mystic Falls one bit. It had given him the chance to reconnect with some old friends and even though he had spent years away it really did feel like home. Liam and Mel were both doing pretty well and they had settled back in quite easily and he’d used some of the inheritance he’d been left by his parents to buy the local garage so that he could have a stable income to support himself and his siblings. Brady had grown up and he knew that that was something that some people wouldn’t have expected him to do but the truth was that he was happy and he knew that he wanted it to stay that way. He’d learned that his parents had been killed by his uncle and he had a cousin he had never known about in town who had originally tried to kill him but again he had survived and he knew that when the fight did come to him then at least he would have the home field advantage. With no other garages in town Brady had plenty to keep himself busy and that was how he liked it. He was on his way back from one emergency call out when he caught sight of a car at the side of the road which seemed to have smoke coming from the engine and he didn’t hesitate in pulling his own vehicle over and putting the hazards on to warn any oncoming traffic that they were there. As the woman asked if he knew anything about cars, a smile touched Brady’s lips. “I might know a thing or two about them,” he chuckled as he climbed out of the car and grabbed his tools from the back. “I’m Brady. I own the local garage so if I can’t fix it then you’re really in trouble,” he explained as he made his way to the front of her car to take a look at the engine. “Can you tell me what happened?” he asked, knowing that was the first step to diagnosing the problem. Ingrid had prepared her people for a lot of things, but engine repair had never been one of the parts of the training she’d been particularly interested in. They worked in partnerships or teams for a reason, you had overlapping skill sets. Most of the guys had that ‘me man, me like mechanical things’ mindset, and honestly she’d been glad to let them have it. She was more analytical, the sort who could organise a single bag of supplies into something that could keep them going for months. An engine wasn’t something you could divide, or augment, it was a snarl of metal and pistons and … whatever else went into these things … that she didn’t understand and that had obviously fallen apart in some way while she’d been in the meeting with the senator.
If she’d dragged one of the team along with her, they’d maybe had taken one look at it and would already be trying to get them back on the road. She hadn’t though and so Rowan puffed out her cheeks as she waved the smoke off. One of the team could be out here soon enough. At the very least they’d be able to pick her up and someone else could come out to deal with the car afterwards. With the sting in her fingers fading, and the smoke drifting on the air, she’d stepped back, ready to go and grab her phone from the car, but another had drifted into view.
Green eyes squinted through the smoke, the decision made before she’d really weighed it up to approach. If this was an easy fix – yeah, she realised just how tiny the chances of that were – then she wouldn’t have to call one of the team out to deal with it. The if had her wincing as she bent down and caught sight of the man behind the wheel. He was smiling at least, that had to be a good sign. ”Sounds like it’s more than I know, at least,” she quipped. Rowan straightened up as he got out of the car and headed for the trunk. She pushed her hair back from her face, narrowing her eyes at the engine again. A new fleet vehicle was probably just a drop in the ocean for the operating budget, but she still felt a little bad about it.
As the man lifted a toolbox out and introduced himself, Rowan looked back and mustered up a smile. She would’ve offered a hand but it didn’t seem the time. Brushing her fingers over the front of her blouse, leaving behind a sooty streak, she chuckled. ”Rowan. I guess I picked the right spot to break down in, a lucky moment too. I’ve got a feeling you’re gonna be my saviour Brady.” And if he got her back on the road then he’d save her the embarrassment of having to admit to people she managed that she really had no clue about what went on under the hood of her own car.
Trailing after him, Rowan carefully propped her hands on one side of the engine compartment. She didn’t dare touch anything, the memory of the sting leaving her curling her fingers in towards her palms. ”This is gonna sound like I don’t have a clue about any of it … and I don’t.” Smiling wryly, she gestured towards the front seat of the car. ”It was fine when I started driving – that was about fifteen minutes ago – but then the engine kinda coughed, then it cut out entirely and well … do you think it’s just overheated? It was smoking a few minutes ago.” There were still thin threads of it now, although whether it was actually smoke or just steam she didn’t actually know.

Brady was used to being called out to various emergencies around Mystic Falls but the truth was that he wasn’t used to finding someone who needed help at the side of the road while he was on his way to the garage. Brady knew firsthand that sometimes bad things would happen when you least expected them to, though, so he knew that he shouldn’t really be surprised. At least this seemed to be a normal engine problem rather than something supernatural anyway and given what Mystic Falls was like, that was definitely a good thing. There was a time when Brady had lived in the town and been completely in the dark about the supernatural but those days were long gone now. These days he was a part of that world himself, having been thrown into it when he’d triggered the curse he hadn’t even known he’d had, and he was an Alpha which meant that he was responsible for looking after not just his siblings but his pack as well. That was why he was trying to do the responsible thing by making it work at the garage as well, it gave him something to do with his time, he had a steady stream of money coming in and it gave the pack a place to hang out when they needed it. Things were different this time around but he knew that that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Nodding as the woman said that it sounded like he knew more than her at least, Brady felt a smile touch his lips. He had always been good with cars and after making it back from Ecuador he had found that it did him good to channel his focus into something productive. It would have been easy to lose himself to the darkness after what had happened but he had known that he couldn’t afford to do that. Even before his parents died there had been certain expectations placed on him and he had known that he had to try and get back to some semblance of normality even if the person he used to be was long gone. “I can’t make any promises but I’ll do my best to get you back on the road,” he assured her. “It’s good to meet you. There were so many new faces in Mystic Falls and even now that Brady had been back in town for a while it still seemed like he was often coming across people that he didn’t know. That wasn’t really a bad thing, though, and Brady had been drawn back to Mystic Falls after his parents died and so many of his pack went missing so he knew that it was probably the same with others too. Brady’s attention was focused on the engine as Rowan explained what had happened but his expression turned thoughtful for a moment once she had finished. “Maybe. There are a few things that could cause smoke like that, I’m just hoping it’s something I’ll be able to fix for you now rather than having to tow you back to the garage. You aren’t in a rush to go anywhere, are you?” he asked, knowing that Julian had the day off so if he couldn’t fix the car right now he could at least ask his friend to take Rowan wherever she was going. Living this down with the team wasn’t going to be easy. She’d had to prove herself again and again, fighting to be the best at every level to work herself up to where she was now. That meant not being caught unprepared, being able to think on the fly when things did go wrong. Had living in Mystic Falls this long left her soft? Maybe, it was more likely her time out of the field had more to do with it. Working directly beneath Ingrid on the corporate ladder was a matter of pride, but it almost meant less time operating. In the end you started to lose your skills, and it seemed as though hers had grown as rusty as the engine of her car.
Rowan felt the embarrassment burn its way into her cheeks as she stood and watched the mechanic approach her car. That scarlet flush she couldn’t exactly will away. At least if he was a professional it’d be easier to stomach than some random guy showing her just how little she knew about the whole thing. Come tomorrow morning she was heading into the garage, forcing one of the team to show her how to strip down an engine, how to deal with whatever this was herself the next time this happened. Undoubtedly if she mentioned it to Ingrid, there wouldn’t be a next time, the entire fleet would be stripped down, built back up with perfect precision or heads would roll.
At any other time she’d have shaken his hand, but not today. Rowan nodded instead, her smile twitching at his reassurance. ”I appreciate it,” she assured him. ”If only it were under better circumstances.” There was a wry twist to her voice. Under any other circumstances she wouldn’t have needed the rescue. Focussed on work the vast majority of her waking hours there hadn’t been much of a chance to get out in this town. The people she had met had blipped out of her life just as quickly as they’d come into it, just confirming that connections in her world never seemed to be made to last outside of the job.
She’d trailed him back to the car, looking at Brady as much as she did the engine – it wasn’t like it was going to make any more sense to her now than it had before. Rowan filled him in as much as she could, the technical information seriously lacking. It was smoke then. She mentally cursed, brushing her hands through her hair before she remembered the soot that still clung to them in spots. ”That’s both of us hoping. You sound like you don’t think it’s gonna be one of those things.” Crap. Maybe she shouldn’t have leapt straight to the negative. There was still a chance here. Pressing her lips together, Rowan shook her head. ”If it had been a couple of hours ago, I would’ve said yes, but I’m just heading back to town now. Is there anything I can do to help?” A glance down at the engine again had her wincing, but she’d try if she had to. Maybe if her dad had been the traditional sort, he’d have sat her down as a kid and taught her all about this stuff, but he’d have been even more useless at this than she was. The thought brought a smile to her lips as she propped her hips against the fender.

Brady hadn’t known how he was going to ever adjust to being home again after he finally escaped captivity in Ecuador. It had been difficult being back even around the people he loved and it had taken him a long time to feel like he wasn’t going to wake up and find himself back there at any moment. Working on cars had helped, it had always been therapeutic for him before he went travelling and he had found that it helped channelling his energy into doing something productive. He had come to terms with the fact that he had triggered his werewolf curse and ever since then he had been doing his best to help his pack through it as well. He hadn’t ever thought that he would become the Alpha but he hadn’t been about to let their previous leader kill him and take his power the way he had killed so many others in the pack. Brady would have quite happily passed the title on to someone else but the pack had wanted him to lead them and he had been doing his best to do just that. It wasn’t easy keeping them all safe and bringing them to Mystic Falls was a risk but they had all needed the chance to start over so the truth was that he didn’t regret the decision one bit. Now things were going better for the pack and running the garage meant that he had a way of helping other people around town as well. It might not be the most exciting job in the world but Brady enjoyed it and he knew that that was all that mattered. This definitely wasn’t the first time he had seen someone broken down at the side of the road while he was passing by and it wouldn’t be the last time it happened either but he knew that he would get to the bottom of the problem the same way he always did. “Who knows, perhaps our second meeting will be,” Brady said, offering Rowan a smile as he looked over at her. He hadn’t seen her around town before but then again there were a lot of faces around town that were different to the ones he had known while he was growing up here so he knew that that was to be expected. Lifting the bonnet, Brady started checking the engine carefully. He had meant it when he had said that there were a few things that could have caused the smoke and some of those options were much worse than others so he really did hope that it would be one of the easier things to fix but as time went on he wasn’t so sure. “I’ll be able to fix whatever is causing it, it will just determine how long it will take to do that,” he shrugged. As she said she was just heading back to town now rather than anywhere urgent, Brady nodded. “That’s good,” he admitted as he continued checking the vehicle. “I found your problem, your radiator hoses are cracked,” he said as he lifted his head and looked over at Rowan. “I can patch this up for you but that is only a temporary fix. They really need to be replaced and I could find some other jobs that need doing while I’m at it. I can tow you back and you can come and pick your car up later if you prefer or I have some lengths of it with me that might be long enough so I can see what I can do here. It’s up to you,” he offered, knowing that only Rowan could make that decision. ROWAN BISHOP

Thanks to Ingrid’s decision to open up a second branch of the company in town, what would’ve been ‘I probably won’t see you again’ was more like a ‘perhaps I’ll see you around’. It had felt strange at first, not waking up to a phone call at 6am to tell her a meeting had been brought up and she had half an hour to get to the airport, finding people smiling at her on the street like she was an old neighbour instead of someone new – and usually – suspicious in the neighbourhood. Rowan had expected it all to change at any minute, but ... it hadn’t, Ingrid hadn’t changed her mind about being here. She’d left at times, heading back to DC or somewhere else to do business, but each time she’d come back here, taking the reins back as soon as she landed. That part had been a relief at times, being boosted to lead had been the biggest compliment possible, it was also a headache though. Especially with Luc throwing a wrench in the works, and times like this.
If it hadn’t been for her white knight here, she’d have been the sort of stuck that might have had Ingrid changing her mind about just who she trusted with the company. It didn’t mean she wasn’t going to admit it happened, but more than anything she’d be mentioning that she had gotten out of it, with help. ”You’re an optimist,” Rowan said, with a huff of amusement. She nodded for a moment, like she mulling it over and then hummed her agreement. ”Maybe it will be.” At the very least she was going to have to pay him for the repair, or the lift back to town. The car could be towed, but there was no way of earth she was waiting around out here for it to happen. Not on her own, at least. One problem with working in security was that you knew exactly what went on in places like this.
Knowing better than to go wiping her hands over any part of herself, Rowan folded her arms over her chest instead, her fingers held carefully away from herself to avoid smearing the soot over her suit. One dark brow rose with amusement. ”A. K. A. it might take longer than either one of us wants to spend out here right now?” she asked lightly. For now she was happy enough to stay put until she had her definitive answer. She almost threw her head back to thank someone for it when he announced he’d found the problem almost immediately. ”That sounds … ominous,” Rowan said, trying to keep her tone light. Of course, it was. The moment he said he could only provide a temporary patch … and that was if the hoses were her only problem, she grimaced. That was definitely more than a hang out here for an hour while I get this sorted sort of problem. For a moment she studied the side of his face, weighing up the options he’d given her. Ingrid taught her people to be smart about things. Don’t take unnecessary risks. ”You honestly wouldn’t mind towing me back to town? I’d rather not put you to the trouble of trying to fix it out here only to find out it’s a bigger problem.” One of the operatives could pick her up from the garage. They’d gripe about it, but not too hard given that she was now one step higher up that ladder.

Ever since he bought the garage Brady had grown used to receiving all sorts of calls from people who needed his help but this time around it just so happened that he was in the right place at the right time. Rowan had managed to pull over at the side of the road but she would have been stranded there otherwise and that was something that he knew he wasn’t going to let happen. He always made sure to keep a set of tools and various different parts with him just in case something like this did happen and he hoped that he would be able to fix it and have her on her way before too long but the only way to know for sure was to take a look and that was exactly what he was going to have to do. “Not always,” Brady chuckled when Rowan said he was an optimist. When it came to most things Brady had been through far too much to ever be considered an optimist but he was trying his best to do better and stay positive because the truth was that he had so many people counting on him now and he knew that he didn’t want them to worry. When it came to problems with vehicles there was usually a way to fix them but this time around the best he could do was a temporary fix so that she could continue on her way. As she spoke, Brady couldn’t help but laugh. “I take it you’ve heard something similar before?” he grinned. Roadside repairs were possible and Brady tried to do that as much as possible so it wouldn’t inconvenience his clients too much but it always depended on exactly what the problem was and what parts he had with him. He couldn’t carry everything that he would ever need around with him so he usually just had what was left over along with a few essentials. Looking over the engine, right now the best he could do was a temporary fix to get her on her way again but it definitely wasn’t going to solve the problem. As she said it sounded ominous, Brady felt a half smile touch his lips. “It sounds worse than it is. The radiator hoses themselves can be replaced easily enough but they can be connected to other issues as well,” he explained. Whatever the damage he knew that he would be able to fix it but it would affect how quickly he was able to do that. As Rowan spoke again, Brady shook his head. “I wouldn’t mind that all,” he assured her. “I can drop you off somewhere along the way if you like or you’re welcome to hang around while I fix it. I was thinking of ordering pizza anyway,” he offered, knowing that he would be happy to go along with whatever she decided. ROWAN BISHOP

The security business wasn’t about best case scenarios – those were what you considered a blessing when they happened. You stuck to pessimism on a daily basis, figuring out what could go wrong so that you had come up with every possible way to avoid it or turn it around when that inevitable nightmare struck. Rowan hadn’t found her on natural inclination towards positivity dimmed by it, but she was sure she had her parents to thank for that. Not everybody at the company had that sort of a start – including Ingrid herself, although the details of what had happened before hadn’t been shared with her beyond a few salient details. People had suffered, been toughened up like old boots, maybe training and the right sort of management could soften then up a little, but nothing was going to change who they’d become on that almost cellular level.
”You are for now and it’s appreciated.” Rowan assured Brady as he tried to brush off her compliment. It did make a difference when you were maybe looking at a long stay out in the woods – something she would’ve been avoiding at all costs even if he hadn’t stumbled on her out here. Optimism would’ve vanished fast then, leaving those shivers running down her spine and her shoulders going tense as she made sure that her weapon was at hand. Nothing coming out of those woods as darkness fell would’ve been as altruistic as the mechanic here.
He could’ve told her that just about anything was wrong with the engine and she would’ve believed him. She was grinning now though, bobbing her head as she listened to him laugh. ”Variations on it. I pretty much use a similar line on staff when plans change.” And most of them were wise enough not to crab about the crappy options that they were being offered. Nobody ever liked to deviate from the neat little lines of their schedule, but sometimes it was unavoidable and at times, like now, that meant having to make a choice between sticking it out and ending up miserable and just abandoning things. Rowan sighed faintly. It was looking more and more like she was going to end up abandoning the car out here. Better it than her, she guessed.
Ominous it was. She could just about picture what the radiator hoses were but the nebulous other issues were under that dark cloud in her mind. She hummed out an acknowledgement, her brows knitting as she crossed her arms. ”I’m not sure how much worse it could be…” she quipped lightly. It all sounded off like it would be better fixed in a garage than it would be at the side of the road. Rowan straightened up as he offered for her to wait around while he fixed it – maybe not such a huge job after all. Her grin brightened, her eyebrows rising. ”Dinner and car repairs?” She glanced at like she was searching for something, then looked back at him. ”Where’s the white horse you road in on?” In her book he was definitely a hero for all of this. Rowan turned, leaning into the car to gather up her jacket and purse. ”I’ll take you up on that. It’ll be a relief to get it all over and done with tonight if I can. Pizza’s on me though … consider it part of the payment.” It would all go on her company credit card, the cost maybe deducted from whoever had failed to spot the problem in the end.

“That’s because when it comes to cars I know what I’m doing. With most other things I just make it up as I go along,” Brady chuckled. He’d been through so much over the course of his life so far. He had been abducted, tortured, made to watch his friends die, triggered his werewolf curse after taking a life when he escaped and from there he’d had to deal with becoming a werewolf and having to stop his previous Alpha when the guy went crazy and decided to wipe out the whole pack so he could steal their power for himself. Since then he’d become legal guardian to his younger siblings after their parents were killed by their uncle and he’d had to figure out how to protect them and his pack. Brady had never been good at any of this, he still felt guilty about being the only one out of all of his friends to survive their trip but he was doing the best he could and he knew that he really couldn’t do anything more than that. “To be honest, I do as well. It’s one of the tricks of the trade,” he grinned. He often had to break bad news to customers and it wasn’t always easy or what they wanted to hear but it came with the territory. Brady knew that Rowan’s car was going to take a lot to get it up and running again but he knew that he could do it, it just wasn’t something that he wanted to try doing at the side of the road. He could have gotten the car going again if she’d had somewhere she needed to be but Rowan had gone for the sensible option and he really was glad about that. “It could be a lot worse, trust me. Don’t worry, I’ll have you back on the road in no time,” he assured her, knowing that it would be easier to make it seem like time was going quicker when they were back at the garage. At least there they could get something to eat and drink and that was never going to be a bad thing. “Can’t think of anything better,” he grinned as Rowan said about dinner and car repairs. It had been a long day so pizza sounded pretty perfect right now and it was something that would be easy enough to make sure that Rowan would like as well. “No white horse I’m afraid, just my truck,” he chuckled. It really wasn’t anything more than his job as far as Brady was concerned but he was glad that he’d arrived when he had and was able to help. “I’ll do what I can,” he nodded as she said that it would be a relief to get it all over and done with tonight if she could. “Sounds like a deal to me. I’ll get your car hooked up and then we’ll go,” he said before setting out to do just that. ROWAN BISHOP

Rowan tried to squelch her grin and failed, her lips were still caught in a bright smile as she narrowed her eyes at Brady. At least he knew cars, that was pretty much all she needed for the moment. ”That’s good to know,” she assured him. ”I’ll know where to call bullshit when I have to.” Sometimes those little white lies and scrambling through situations you didn’t entirely understand came back to bite you on your ass. Sometimes, like she had as a teenager, you got lucky under those circumstances and someone saved your ass. Rowan guessed that this was like a faint echo of what had happened with Ingrid that day. She’d been about to blunder on, determination and perhaps a hint of overconfidence possibly leading her into a sticky situation. Ingrid had gotten her out of trouble then, and now Brady was doing the same. She really had to start planning for all contingencies. Mechanics were never going to be her forte. Ingrid had always taught her to use other people’s skills to complement her own. It seemed to be part of the reason why Ingrid had gathered so many supernaturals around her. They had strengths that complimented her own, becoming an almost unstoppable army – if Ingrid chose to use them that way. She could pick up bits and pieces of what others could do, but at the end of the day she was never going to be able to do what they could. Rowan figured she could probably say the same about the engine now, even if she could learn some of the lingo, or learn to change a spark plug or something.
”I guess there are some skills that are always transferable,” Rowan joked. ”If you ever want to swap a garage for a little time in security I imagine you’d do pretty well.” Her gaze raked him up and down – not in the sort of flirtatious way that Luc had looked at her when he’d swaggered into the office and had been looking to put both her and Ingrid off their game. Brady looked like he could handle the job physically at least, mentally was always another question, one that they figured out during training when they winnowed their trainees down to just the people who could handle it. She couldn’t help but wince as Brady assured her that it could be a lot worse. If she hadn’t already planned on reading the riot act to the staff dealing with the company’s vehicles, she would not. Could something have failed when she was going at a high speed? What if a tire had blown? She could heal almost anything, but she’d have preferred not to have to claw her way out of a car wreck if she could help it. ”It’s appreciated,” Rowan told him, swallowing hard as she tightened her arms around herself a little. It would’ve been easy to sink into those worries, but Brady had been reassuring from the start. ”You need to set a higher bar,” she said with a chuckle. Right now she’d appreciate both, though, especially since he was willing to spend his evening making sure that she could drive away.
”I’ll take it. I’ve never been much of a rider, anyway.” It wasn’t exactly a skill that was required for the job. Rowan slipped her jacket on, hooking her purse over her shoulder before she gripped Brady’s arm for a moment in gratitude. ”Sounds good to me,” she murmured. Tugging her phone out of her pocket to shoot a message to Ingrid to let her know that she’d be back late – she wasn’t spelling out the details in a message, Ingrid would only react immediately and she wanted to chew the staff out herself. ”So where’s the best spot in town for pizza?” Rowan asked she watched Brady work. All this time in town and she was still fumbling around the local restaurants and amenities – after a long day it always just seemed easier to get room service at the hotel.
