Ben had learned pretty quickly after his mom died that not everyone who was supernatural was evil, he had met hunters on the road who had thought otherwise and they’d tried to talk him around to their way of thinking but that just wasn’t him. Ben knew that there was good and bad in everyone and the fact that he was one of Azazel’s Special Children was proof of that as far as he was concerned. For years he had worried that the demon blood that had been fed to him while he was just a baby would affect who he was and corrupt him the way it had done his uncle Sam but fortunately that didn’t seem to be the case. Ben didn’t use his abilities unless he had to and these days they were much easier to control. A lot of the Special Children seemed to have left Mystic Falls and Ben knew that was probably a good thing, having them all in one place like that had put a target on all of their backs and that was something that none of them had deserved. Now they were all free to do their own thing and for Ben right now that meant helping Riley try and find Danny. He had been looking into the curse ever since he had first heard about it but he hadn’t been able to find anything at all other than the reports about the deaths of Danny’s family members and they hadn’t revealed anything other than that each one of them had been branded and they had all been killed by what could only be a Darach. He had wanted to spare his friend that same fate but it hadn’t worked out it seemed and now he was missing. It was clear that Riley was doing his best to hold it together and Ben knew that he needed to stay positive for him and do everything he could to find Danny. “We will. He’ll turn up,” Ben assured him. They had to believe that, there was something strange going on in Mystic Falls at the moment and he knew that this could just be another one of those instances but something told him that wasn’t the case. They had all known that it was only a matter of time before the Darach caught up with Danny whether they wanted to admit it or not and even though there could be a reasonable explanation for what was going on right now, Ben couldn’t shake the feeling that the Darach was responsible for Danny’s disappearance. As Riley said the Mikaelsons needed to be finding something out about this now, Ben’s expression softened. “I’m sure they’re doing all they can. They’ll be in touch if they find anything.” They had been looking into the curse for a long time but this was different, now Danny was missing so there had to be someone somewhere who knew what was going on or some lead they could find as to where he had gone. “I know they have. They’re all doing the best they can, you just have to have faith.” That was easier said than done sometimes but Ben honestly hoped that someone would come through for them quickly. “I know,” Ben said gently as Riley said he was trying not to give up hope. As Riley spoke again, a smile touched Ben’s lips. “I wish. Unfortunately that’s not one of my abilities,” he grinned. It would have been good if it was since it meant that he could have found out more about what was going on but it wasn’t something that he could do so he was going to have to settle for other ways of tracking him down. Finding the ground disturbed like that wasn’t a good sign at all and Ben knew it was more important than ever that they find Danny as soon as they could. “That’s Danny,” Ben nodded as Riley confirmed that Danny hadn’t wanted anyone else getting hurt by what was coming for him. Ben wasn’t surprised by that at all, Danny always put others before himself and there was no way he would want to risk the safety of anyone he cared about. “He might have still got away,” Ben said even though the truth was that he was losing hope as well. The fight looked bad and Ben hated the fact that Danny had had to face the Darach alone but it was the way Danny would have wanted it. This time when Riley tried Danny’s phone he could hear it faintly and Ben listened carefully for a moment trying to pinpoint the location of it before heading in that direction. He could hear it getting louder the closer he got and he crouched down as it sounded like he was right on top of the phone, searching under the leaves on the ground until he found it. “It’s here,” he said, picking the phone up and feeling his heart lurch as he realised that the screen was broken. Riley tried to hold on to Ben’s faith. He was a hunter, he’d been finding … things for years. If he’d found them then surely he could find Danny too. Danny wouldn’t be trying to hide from them, maybe from something else, but not from them. If he could he would find them and everything would be alright again. Doubt had been trying to swallow him like a whale closing its mouth around a tiny speck of plankton. It was all around him, the light that was his hope that he was just being dramatic shrinking fast. Riley made a small sound in his throat of agreement. He had to keep hoping because the opposite was unthinkable. They hadn’t gone through all that they had just to lose one another now. Their friends would gather around them, stretching out across the campus and town like a net, bound to find Danny and whoever might have hurt him in it somewhere. Once they did they could stop the darach for good, he and Danny could go on with the life they’d planned.
He wanted to say that he didn’t think what everybody was doing would be enough, but that was admitting defeat. Riley saw the way Ben’s expression softened and suspected that somewhere inside he knew that too. He was just trying to prepare him, to make sure he held on to hope for as long as possible. When the truth arrived, he’d want them all to be together so he wasn’t the only one standing here with him as he fell apart. Riley’s gaze ticked away from Ben’s. ”It feels like we need to do more. We’ve been trying for so long…” Running into dead ends the same way that Danny’s family must have done again and again over the centuries. All of those people searching for a way to end this nightmare and they still hadn’t found a way. Riley’s head dipped, his throat working again, his eyes shimmered with tears when he looked up and croaked at Ben. ”I’m sorry. I’m trying. It just … it feels like I failed him somehow. Like I should have been there and I wasn’t.” Not in the way Danny had been there for him in those few seconds before he’d died. He’d known Danny was there, but Danny didn’t have that, he didn’t have him.
Without Ben he wouldn’t even have gotten this far. Ben had been the one pushing him on, offering help, his hunting abilities probably already coming in handy. Asking for him to be doing more than that was guilty, but still being able to joke about it was loosening the chains that had left his chest feeling so tight. ”That’s a shame, we could’ve done with one right around now,” Riley managed. His lips curved for just a moment before the expression fell away. Moments later any thought of humour was long gone. He’d been right. Someone had come for Danny and his fiancé had been left fighting for his life, maybe while he’d been standing around talking to Ben. ”I would have done it though,” Riley whispered to Ben. ”I’d give my life for his every single time.” Whether Danny would’ve let him or not. Danny surviving was the only thing that mattered to him.
Chest tight, Riley ran along the path Danny had taken, proud that he’d fought and sickened by the thought that he’d still lost all at the same time. ”Maybe. If he did he would’ve come to us. He knew where I was going to be.” But maybe Danny had wanted to direct the fight away from him, making sure he didn’t get pulled into it. Desperate for a good outcome, he’d pulled his phone from his pocket, calling Danny’s number again. His ears strained, trying to track the sound, but his pounding heart drowned it out until he saw Ben head off in a direction. Following, Riley stared down at the ground, trying to pick it out among the leaves. His fingers white knuckled his own phone as Ben lifted Danny’s phone. The screen was cracked, maybe crushed by whoever had taken him. ”Can you get anything up on it? Maybe he tried calling one of us, maybe he left a message.” Some clue, because they sure as hell didn’t have anything else right now.

Ben knew that the chances of finding Danny alive weren’t that great, it had been a while since he had been branded by the Darach and even though they had all tried to find a way to save him, it seemed that the curse had caught up with him at last. It wasn’t what Ben had wanted for his friend and it wasn’t what he wanted for Riley either, the two of them were so in love and Ben had hoped that they would get their chance at building a future together but now everything was so uncertain. He was doing his best to get Riley to stay positive even when that hope was beginning to fade within Ben himself. He didn’t want to think that Danny was gone but he knew that it was a very real possibility and so did Riley. “I know. None of this is easy but this curse goes back generations and we’re not the only ones who haven’t been able to find a way to stop it,” Ben said gently. He didn’t doubt that Danny’s family would have tried to find a way but from what Danny had told him none of them knew how to break the curse either so at least they weren’t the only ones that had tried. Seeing the way that Riley’s eyes were full of tears when he looked up at him, Ben reached for his friend and pulled him into a tight hug. “You haven’t failed him, you’ve done everything you could for him,” he assured him as he let Riley go once more. “If you were there then you could be missing right now too and Danny wouldn’t have wanted that,” Ben added, knowing that his words were true. One thing Danny had said time and time again was that he didn’t want anything bad happening to Riley so Ben was probably pretty glad that he wasn’t there. A smile touched Ben’s lips as Riley said they could have done with a psychic around right now. “Sorry to disappoint, you’ll have to make do with my tracking skills instead,” Ben shrugged. He might not be a psychic but he could help in other ways and he knew that he was going to do just that. Ben found himself nodding as Riley said that he would give his life for Danny’s every time. “I know you would and Danny would do the same for you. That’s what love does,” he said gently. Each of them would put the life of the other before their own and that was something that Ben still hoped that he would be able to find one day. He had been in love before but his relationship had come to an end when Hayden had moved away and he hadn’t had much luck finding anyone since then but he still wasn’t giving up hope. “Unless he needed to draw the Darach away, then he would have got as far away as he could,” Ben said gently. Danny would have done everything he could to keep the people he loved safe, that was something that Ben knew for certain. He looked around the area as Riley rang Danny’s phone and he soon found it under a pile of leaves. The screen was cracked but Ben managed to unlock it and his heart ached as the screen opened onto a draft text to Riley. “He did leave a message, it’s for you,” he said, his breath catching in his throat as he held the phone out to Riley. The message was simple, only five words, but Danny hadn’t had the chance to send it. I love you, and goodbye.RILEY PARKER

Ben was probably trying to be reassuring by saying that none of Danny’s family had ever been able to get out from under this, but in a way it was the opposite. All those druids, all of their knowledge they’d built up, and none of them had been able to find a way out from under this. He hadn’t wanted to think about it before, but maybe that meant that there wasn’t one. This was always destined to happen this way and they were never going to get that happy ever after that they’d both hoped for. ”Someone should’ve found a way by now,” Riley whispered hoarsely. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, trying to will the tears that wanted to burn their way free back. They only burned the harder when Ben pulled him into a hug. Riley curled his fingers into the back of Ben’s shirt, holding on tight for a moment. A mirthless laugh huffed out of him as Ben pulled back and he met his eye. ”Danny always warned me not to try and push too hard to be a part of the fight. He wanted to protect me. It’s just hard knowing that I couldn’t in the end.” It made his heart ache and his stomach turn to think of his fiancé out there fighting this evil all by himself. Alone he might’ve been useless at this, unless he’d managed to pick up Danny’s scent, but that was a big stretch given that they didn’t even have a starting point for him. Ben hadn’t just managed to keep him sane, he’d gotten him on track, and had handled every ounce of panic that had spilt out of him. ”I’m lucky to have you and all your skills right now,” he admitted, his smile fading out again. ”Danny always said you were amazing at what you did.” The sort of hunter that didn’t just slaughter every thing he came across. The word love left his chest tight now, his lungs fighting against the breath that he drew in. ”Love hurts, especially at times like this, but every bit of it is worth it,” Riley managed hoarsely. ”It’s gonna be so much more than this when he gets back.” The lifetime together that they’d imagined, with no need to try and take the bullet for each other when trouble came knocking at the door again. Decades of happiness, the same way Danny’s parents had – and his own in their own way. His fingers felt numb, but if he could just keep holding onto the idea, they would get there.
Finding the signs of Danny’s fight eventually left his hope in shreds. Riley closed his hands into fists, trying to make sure they didn’t flutter away. Danny wasn’t helpless, he would’ve fought the Darach with everything he had, not giving up until had to. Maybe he’d managed to chase the Darach off, maybe he was somewhere here, hurt, waiting for them to find him. Ben’s gentle reassurances had him carrying on when his legs wanted to give out. ”We need everybody out here,” he told Ben hoarsely. ”If Danny’s here, we need to find him. I know he’d want to make sure we’d be safe first, but if everybody’s here…” It would be safety in numbers. Fingers shaking he tried calling Danny’s number again. He half expected Danny to pick it up, but it just rang and rang, drawing the two of them in. Riley shook his head as Ben explained there was a message, tears blurring his vision as they finally started to fall. His hand shook as he took the message. The goodbye he’d desperately wanted to avoid. Sobbing, Riley fell to his knees, clutching the phone to his chest. No. It wasn’t over, it couldn’t be over, this couldn’t be the last time Danny told him that he loved him.
