Unfortunately, the podcast didn’t bring in enough money to keep Eden afloat. They had a few sponsors on there, but no big names had signed up. Yet. She still had hope that their podcast was going to make it into the top ten in America one day. They were slowly climbing the ranks. In the meantime, she was left picking up odd jobs here and there in order to keep her bank balance depleting to zero. Her face lit up when she saw an advertisement for the carnival stuck to the notice board in town, inviting vendors to step up and join. She wasn’t exactly a brilliant cook but she knew how to whisk up some decent cupcakes and it wasn’t going to be any of those boring cupcakes with vanilla icing and sprinkles on them. Eden stepped back from her little stall with a proud smile glued to her face as she admired her homemade cupcakes. Each cupcake had some kind of supernatural spooky theme going on although her personal favourite was the vampire themed cupcakes. Red icing on them with fake edible blood dripping down off them and teeth gummies stuck on top. Although the ghost themed ones were also adorable. She stepped back once more, raising her phone to take a picture before uploading it into all streams of social media for the podcast. She doubted any of her listeners would be in the small town to swing back and have a look at her stall, apart from one. Her and Billy had yet to identify the person who invited them to come to Mystic Falls, telling them the place was full of mysterious goings on. Eden was still searching high and low for such things, but they were only at the start. The morning was somewhat slow for Eden, with about a half dozen people stopping to buy cupcakes. Some would just slow down to observe the cupcakes from afar, some with a frown. It wasn’t even October yet and someone had already whipped out vampire and ghost themed goods, but those things didn’t come out just on Halloween. Ghosts surrounded them all day every day, which was another thing she’d tell her listeners. She broke into a warm smile as another potential customer approached her stall or perhaps just another one to observe. “Hey! How’s it going?” She stood up from the beach chair she had managed to dig out from her belongings that morning. A slight creak from the metal legs as she got to her feet. “Cupcakes are $3 each or two for $5.” KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA WAS GOING THROUGH A WHOLE freakin' crisis. Like, her boyfriend tried to munch on her best friend and she had no idea what to do about it. Plus, her concealer kept sticking awkwardly to the scabs on her neck and totally not covering them. It honestly just made them look worse.
Anyway, usually Krista reacted pretty quickly to stuff like this. She freaked out and screamed and cried, and then managed to forgive Mal (whether or not he was deserving), but she didn’t want to this time. She’d always forgave him, but they had a whole freakin’ conversation about Mal drinking from other people, and then she got those blood bags for him! For the birthday she put together FOR him!
Why the hell didn’t he appreciate her? She was the best girlfriend in the world, and she deserved way more… hold on, is that a cupcake dressed up like a vampire?
Practically skidding to a halt, Krista cocked her head to the side, eyes wide and focused on the stall full of themed confectionaries. Immediately, she lit up and wandered off the path, practically prancing up to the cupcakes━and likely losing River in the process. He could have a heart attack later, though; she wanted a cupcake.
Alright, so maybe it didn’t make sense to get a dessert that reminded her of her boyfriend right after she was plotting his freakin’ funeral, but… they were just so cute! And yeah, she was really mad, but she still loved him!
“Hi! Good, how ‘bout you?” Krista lied, smiling happily, though on the inside she still felt really awful. But it was important to be polite, and she wasn’t gonna let Mal being the worst ruin everybody else’s day, too.
“Reeeaally?” Krista gaped at the price, her mouth falling open for a moment before she grinned, pulling out her phone. “They’re so cute! Yeah, gimme a vampire and a… ummm, ghost, please!” Finally deciding which would be a good choice for River, she opened the camera app and lined up a shot of the vampire cupcake. “I gotta show my boyfriend,” She practically squee’d, snapping a photo and sending it off to Mal. “These are so cool. You made all of ‘em?” Beaming, Krista stuffed her phone away. Briefly, she thought about how emotionally soothing it would be to bite off the top and pretend it was Mal’s head. “Super excited for Halloween, or what?” She teased, giggling softly as she pulled out her wallet.

For a town where a heap of people was dying nonstop, the locals seemed pretty nice, bordering on chilled. Eden couldn’t figure out why though. The media hype hadn’t affected them in the way she would have expected. If something this crazy was going down in her hometown in Australia people would be bolting their front doors shut and not leaving the house until it was safe to do so. Unless they were all forced to forget everything somehow. Like their minds were being controlled by something else and they were being told to be calm all the time. In the same way Daniel totally forgot who she was even though the two had a pretty long intense conversation the first time he met. Maybe the townies were being pumped full of chemicals by the government and their minds were being altered. Okay. That was a little absurd but a theory to put on the back burner for now. Either way she wanted solid proof of the supernatural world. Something she could produce as evidence to show everyone and say “Ha. I told you I was right.” She needed to see something with her own two eyes rather than a few fingerprints on a dusty piano she saw when she was a child. A perfect example of a happy chilled local wandering towards her stall. The blonde girl’s face was lit up like a Christmas tree, her eyes fixed on the baked goods on the table. Eden nodded in response to the girl’s question, “Yup, all good.” She responded with a quick nod. The smile that was spread across Eden’s face grew wider when the other girl asked to buy two. “Of course! Cash or card?” She waited until the stranger took a picture of the cupcake before carefully picking up one vampire themed one and one ghost themed one, “Yeah made them this morning.” She placed both cupcakes into a small box and then handed them over to the girl, “Halloween is one of my favourite holidays, but also I’m an avid fan of all things supernatural… I run a little podcast where we look into spooky things that have happened throughout history. One of our listeners told us to come here as the town is full of unexplained shit… are you a local?” Eden held back before throwing all her questions at this girl about the town. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ OKAY, SO KRISTA WAS SUPER-DUPER MAD at Mal, but she also liked a good cupcake. What girl in her right mind was gonna turn down a freakin’ vampire cupcake?! Well, okay, maybe some girl in her ‘right mind’ wouldn’t be dating a vampire, but whatever. That wasn’t the point.
“Cash!” Krista dug her hand into her pocket and pulled out a few crumpled bills. She smoothed them out, counted, and handed them over. Taking the box in exchange, Krista giggled at it, already over the moon with her decision to buy one. Maybe she’d send a picture of her licking the top to Mal━he wouldn’t suspect a thing━and then she’d bite it off. She hoped they were yummy. “Thank you!” Krista said cheerfully, working past the urge to dig into the box right away. She wasn’t really good with the whole ‘delayed gratification’ thing.
Oooh, fresh cupcakes. Even better! Even harder to resist, too. Would River get mad if she ate hers before she even made it back to him? Maaaybe.
Whoa, avid fan of all things supernatural? So was Krista! Okay, so she was just a fan of vampires. Okay, so she was just a fan of one vampire (and one werewolf). Still counted. Did the Cupcake Seller also have a vampire boyfriend? Maybe a wolf bestie-slash-roommate? That would be cool.
“What’s a podcast?” Krista asked. She was sure she’d heard the word before, but everyone always just said ‘You don’t know what a podcast is?!’ and then never answered her. She hoped the Cupcake Seller would be more open to an explanation, especially ‘cause she was running one herself.
Bristling only slightly at the curse word, Krista nodded slowly. “Unexplained stuff like what?” She frowned, wondering if Mal was in trouble. Leah had mentioned hunters and, well, Krista wanted to make sure he was bein’ safe, even if he was a big dummy about it. “Nope! I go to Whitmore, but I grew up, like, three hours from here. I never really thought Mystic Falls was spooky.” Pausing for a moment, she added, “Or history. What spooky stuff has happened throughout history?” Krista only knew what she was taught in school and Sunday School, and the “spookiest” thing she could think of was when Jesus brought Lazarus back to life, then himself. Maybe when he turned water into wine; that was pretty cool, though, not spooky.

She would probably end up being a jack of all trades, yet master of none. This week she was selling cute vampire cupcakes and next week she’d be selling tote bags with fangs etched on the front. Swapping the whisk for a sewing machine and no doubt swapping it for something else the following week. She did the exact same thing as a child though, bouncing between hobbies furiously. It infuriated her mom since she was the one paying for all these hobbies. One minute Eden wanted a pony the next minute she wanted tap shoes. Now she was the one funneling her money into these hobbies. Eden reached forward, taking the notes from the girl before stuffing them into her jean pocket without bothering even to count them out, buzzing on the inside at the stranger's excitement with the cupcakes. The girl had what Eden would call ‘good energy,’ which sounded like some spiritual bullshit and Eric would always pull a face whenever she used the term, but she never pulled her face when he referred to certain celebrities as ‘wifey material,’ even though they had no idea he existed. Old people had a tendency to frown whenever Eden mentioned the word podcast before proceeding to tell her they use to make their own using just a stick and a ball, but not a girl who appeared to Eden’s age. Oh my. Maybe she was one of those super old vampires who didn’t know how to use technology. “Errr. It’s like audio episodes. You can listen to them online whilst going about your day-to-day, just like music except someone talking to you about something.” She quickly grabbed her rucksack off the floor, rummaging through one of the smaller pockets. She pulled out a small card, that basically looked like a business card and handed it to the girl. “Check us out! We’re on Spotify and Apple.” But if this girl was like a super super old vampire she probably had no idea what Spotify was. Or perhaps she was just a normal teenager who had been living under a rock for a few years because she didn’t seem too concerned about Eden’s prying around in the supernatural world. “Dead bodies turning up with no explanation… that kind of thing.” This girl seemed waaaaay too nice to be a vampire who killed people anyway. “There are so many people that going missing or get killed in this small ass town so either there is a super clever serial killer amongst us or something supernatural is going on… also that whole Founding Council shit seems weird as hell.” Sadly it would be near impossible to worm her way into the council to find out their secrets and tricks. ━ i can't get you out of my head ━ THANKFULLY FOR KRISTA, THE CUPCAKE GIRL was gonna tell her what the heck a podcast was. She seemed a little flabbergasted that Krista even asked, but what was a girl to do?! Everybody kept talkin’ ‘bout them things, and she had no freakin’ clue what they were!
Now, though, she thought they sounded super cool. “Whoaaa, like, people just tellin’ you stories and stuff?” She wondered if they had bedtime stories on there. Krista figured they’d probably help her fall asleep at night, ‘cause sometimes her thoughts kept her up for hours, and havin’ Mal around didn’t always help. “That’s cool.” She agreed.
Krista reached over and took the card, smiling down at it. “Spotify! I think my brother has that. I’ll ask him to set me up on it!” She pushed it into her pocket, hoping she wouldn’t forget later on. It might not be River’s thing, but Krista thought she’d like it a lot!
“Oh.” Krista said softly. She didn’t know why, but she felt a little… guilty about the whole dead people thing. She was givin’ Mal her blood, so he shouldn’t be out bitin’ people, but that wasn’t true with Kitty. But… he’d never kill them, right? No way. Krista just wouldn’t believe it!
She nodded slowly and swallowed hard, hearing the audible gulp in her head. “Yeah… you’re right. I feel like they woulda caught just one serial killer in such a small town.” Krista frowned. She didn’t know much about the Founding Council, but if this girl thought they were weird, then she did, too. At least for now.
“I gotta go find my brother,” She said suddenly, her eyes flicking up and around. “I just realized I dunno where he is. Thank you for the cupcake and the podcast stuff, though! I’ll check you guys out!” Krista waved with one little cupcake box, beaming a ‘goodbye’ smile at the girl before trotting off in search of River.
