It wasn’t the family reunion she was wishing for, but all that mattered was their son was still alive. Well, kind of. He was still standing and breathing which was a relief. However he was different. Not just the dark veins that now crept down his face or his desire to drink human blood. He was withdrawn and closed off. Lena had tried everything with Baxter, but he still had no idea what had happened to him the past few months. It was increasingly frustrating, but it wasn’t his fault he couldn’t remember. It was Mal’s fault. She was convinced he was behind the kidnapping and she wanted to end his miserable life. She dreamt of taking a wooden stake and driving it through his cold unloveable heart. Mal’s death wouldn’t change what happened to Baxter but it would certainly bring the family a sense of revenge. Perhaps death was too kind for Mal. She wanted him to suffer the way she and Pierre had for the past few months. Lost, devastated and angry. The best thing for Baxter was to return to college and have some sense of normality back in his life. At least that’s what he told Lena when he begged his parents to let him return to Whitmore. It was the last thing she wanted, but what else could they do? Keep him locked up in the apartment under twenty-four-hour surveillance. Something that would surely drive him insane and further towards breaking point. As he was packing his bags to return he promised he would call his parents three times a day. Morning, noon and night. Even if it was just a quick phone call to say he was okay. Seeing Baxter latch on to the stranger in the town square, with no concern for the human’s life, broke her heart into a thousand pieces. Thankfully he has his dad alongside him. Someone who would understand exactly what he was going through. Someone to hold his hand and guide him through the next few months. A part of Lena felt useless. For the first time in her life, she had no idea how to help Baxter. He wasn’t a toddler learning how to walk or a child learning how to ride a bike. He was learning how to control his bloodlust. It wasn’t as simple as holding onto the back of his bicycle until he was ready for one of his parents to let go so he could peddle alone. Nonetheless, she was confident they would get through this. Pierre managed to get his bloodlust under control, so she knew Baxter could do the same. Lena shuffled through the front door, two grocery bags in one hand and her keys in the other. She pushed the door closed with her foot. “Hello? Pierre?” She called out as she headed into the kitchen, tossing her keys on the side and placing the bags on the counter. “I buy cookies.” She rummaged through the bag, pulling the bag of cookies out. She broke into a smile as she saw her husband appear in the kitchen. “You okay? You look… um, all ruffled.” She extended her arm, offering a cookie to Pierre. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ PIERRE THOUGHT ABOUT KILLING MAL EVERY day and night. Each waking moment, his daydreams were filled with the ways in which he’d do it━how he’d tie the vampire up and burn him alive. Pin him to some sort of surface with stakes, like a makeshift crucifixion.
Would any of that make him feel better, though? Perhaps. It would keep his family out of danger, too. They were Pierre’s first priority, his love and his life. Baxter was their final hope after Mal took that choice away from them, though Pierre figured he should be a little more grateful. Maybe.
No, no. There was no room for that now. Just anger and hatred.
He’d plan. It didn’t matter if Mal had succeeded and was now creating all sorts of strange creatures (more than just mixes of two, but advanced vampires as well), Pierre would stop him. Pierre and Lena would stop him, and they’d do it… as soon as Pierre figured out a plan.
With his fingers buried in his hair, Pierre frowned down at his map of Mystic Falls. Across the coffee table were scattered papers, containing strange accounts of beings in the town and surrounding areas, reports of “animal attacks,” and handwritten letters from friends in other states. Friends were what led his family here in search of Mal, so they could be valuable again, non?
The sound of the door creaking open was a shrill jab to his brain, one that knocked Pierre out of deep thought. Hector had only just dropped this bomb of information on him, and Pierre was yet to share it with Lena━curling up in bed together at the end of the day just wasn’t the time. Now, though, he had the chance with Baxter back at school. And now seemed to be as good a time as any.
“Salut, mon coeur," Pierre smiled as he stood up and moved to the kitchen, though he looked tired and a little crazy━his hair was standing on end, sticking out every which way. “Oui, oui, I’m… non,” His smile fell, as did his shoulders, with a long sigh rolling out of his lungs. Pierre moved in, plucking the cookie from Lena’s hands and offering her a sad smile in return. “Merci,” He shifted around, wrapping his free arm around his wife. “I spoke to Hector. ‘E told me about dzis woman ‘e met, a vampire, dzough… she was far stronger dzan me.” Or our son, but he didn’t allow the words to be said aloud. “Or any of us. She couldn’t be killed with a stake in her ‘eart. She tried to feed from Hector.” He sighed, “It seems Mal… ‘e’s doing far more dzan we thought. Creating creatures… we never dreamt of.” Pierre stuffed the cookie in his mouth, though it didn’t make him feel any better.
“I’ve been dzinking…” He began, talking around the cookie, “... Perhaps we set a trap for ‘im? No loved ones, no one would ever be so stupid, and ‘e is likely as lonely as ‘e’s ever been…”

Lena tried her best throughout the years to let go of regret, knowing she’d spend centuries overthinking every single thing she ever did, but amongst it all, there was one thing she regretted the most. More than anything in the world and there had been a lot of bad shit she’d done. Trusting Mal. It had cost her so much in the end. Firstly her husband’s morality and now her son’s. There was only so much slow down she could do to her own age. Her life wasn’t eternal, at least not in the way Baxter and Pierre’s was. The only person she knew who had a loophole to this was her mom. She had tried her best to contain her anger because nothing good was going to come of her and Pierre being consumed by rage, especially when their son needed them the most. It was eating away at her slowly, but she tried to focus on Baxter. Her love for him outranked her hatred for Mal. Mal’s time would come. There was no point pouncing on him right now as their actions were driven by sole emotion. The couple needed to sit down and devise a plan. There was that blonde girl they’d seen hanging around campus with Mal, then there was the girl with one eye who Lena had handed a leaflet to, but apparently, she was Baxter’s friend. Off limits. Lena was set on going after the blonde girl anyway. Her gaze flickered past Pierre and onto the map which lay across the coffee table, along with other pieces of paper. She didn’t pay much attention as her attention jumped back to Pierre with a smile. He always looked so handsome when his hair was a little wild, but the smile fell from her face when she realised her husband looked worried. Her heart skipped a beat as she thought about Baxter. Had he killed someone? Immediately she felt guilty that her mind leaped to the conclusion that her son had done something bad. She placed the cookies down on the side as Pierre slipped his arm around her waist, listening to her husband speak. It was Mal that did something to their son. She pulled back from Pierre a fraction, looking up at him, “So it not just Baxter he been messing with?” She knew something was off about the town after reading about all the horrible headlines in the papers. “We should have stopped Baxter from coming here.” Had she led Baxter to his death by failing to put her foot down with him? Lena stepped back from Pierre, taking a cookie from the bag before taking a small bite. “Do you have anything in mind? This trap would need to be convincing… convince Mal.” Something the couple couldn’t rush into haphazardly, thinking only of their son. “That man will die alone.” He would soon be gone and forgotten with no one mourning his death. ━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, PIERRE WOULD SEE Mal suffer. Perhaps he couldn’t kill him━nothing would be rid of a cockroach, and Mal could be even more powerful if he was creating things like that━but none of this would stop Pierre from trying.
“Seems not.” Pierre answered with a sigh. He didn’t know if that was better or worse━no, definitely worse. It meant he didn’t care who he turned, and hundreds of abominations could exist. Perhaps all under Mal’s control. (‘Abominations,’ of course, because Pierre wasn’t involved in their creation. Unless some of his ideas were used━were they?!) He squeezed Lena for a moment, trying to comfort her. “We never could ‘ave known ‘e would be next,” It was true, but it didn’t make this any less difficult.
Pierre let Lena step from his arms without protest, and continued to watch her while wearing a concerned expression. As much as he was spiralling into the depths of his frantic mind, he still worried about Lena. He never liked to see her suffer, but it was inevitable.
He munched the cookie while coming forward with his plan, and smiled around it when Lena asked for his input. “Well… exactly. What does ‘e like more dzan ‘imself?” Pierre’s eyes brightened like a kid on Christmas. Okay, Hanukkah, maybe, with a new dreidel. “Nothing!” He exclaimed, excited by his own answer. He threw his hands up to accentuate it, and, as they fell, he reached out to grab one of her own. Pierre led her to the couch, flopping down with Lena. He spread his arms, indicating the plethora of… mess.
“I dzink━from my research━‘e’s most active around zee college. Most cases where someone goes missing from dzere for a few days and comes back… look,” Without finishing his sentence, he jumped to the next thought, pulling forward a free seemingly disorganized pages. “Missing… dzen animal attack. Missing…. return trois day later… animal attack. Okay, so dzere’s a few Missing-For-A-Few-Days cases where dzere’s no animal attack━but still!” He stabbed the papers frantically, making a ‘thunk’ sound on the table each time he hit one.
“We wait… we get stakes, vervain━we get ‘im when ‘e least expects. Take ‘im… ah, we need a place to take ‘im.” Clearly, his planning hadn’t gotten very far. Pierre visibly deflated when he sighed, tilting his face down, almost ashamed. “I guess zee plan isn’t complete yet…” The important part, anyway. But Pierre hoped Lena could fill in the gaps, as she often did in his life.

The sadness that had burnt through her over the past few months due to Baxter’s disappearance had evolved into rage. She was no longer the weeping mother who wanted her son back in her arms, she was the mother who needed revenge for what happened. Until she held Baxter in her arms she never realised just how strong a mothers lover for her son could be. It was as if she and Pierre had been placed on the earth to protect Baxter. Perhaps it was sheer coincidence that Mal went for Baxter, after all they kept their son away from anything to do with the experiments, unless Mal had been doing his own research. Whilst they were looking for, maybe he was watching them, but the chances were they were nothing but a fleeting memory to him now. Those people he left behind to be slaughtered by hunters. He was too busy looking out for number one, as always. “C'est la vie.” She responded with a small smile. They could have never predicted this. Pierre was running away with his own thoughts, excitement oozing from him as he spoke to Lena, although she wasn’t fully following what he was saying, which wasn’t an uncommon occurrence with her husband. Sometimes it was like someone had rammed a firework up his ass and let it off. There had been a spark of an idea whilst she had been out, clearly. She followed Pierre to the couch, sitting down alongside him, her eyes drifting over to his research. She reached forward, picking up one of the papers, her eyes scanning over it only taking it part of the context as she was too busy focusing on what Pierre was saying. “We go to college and we find Mal.” The thought of coming face to face with him sparked a mixture of excitement and anger inside her. She placed the paper back down on the table, turning to Pierre with a huge smile on her face. He looked like he’d just hit a brick wall with his idea. “This is great stuff Pierre!” She exclaimed, placing her hands on her cheeks, cupping his face in her palms. “We go to college and do like one of those stalk outs… no wait… stake out. Make notes, watch him, figure out his pattern then take him. We find somewhere outside of town to take him… then bam torture him until he beg for death.” Driving a stake through his cold heart was too quick for him. Lena wanted him to suffer until the very end. She edged forward, placing a light kiss on Pierre’s lips. “I love you.” Her hands dropped from his face before her fingers laced in his, pulling him up from the couch. “We have been too stressed to take advantage of empty apartment.” Lena drew Pierre close to her, a grin on her face before she tugged her husband into the bedroom. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE the end!
