━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ MYSTIC FALLS WAS, WELL, FUCKING BORING LATELY. HANNYA HAD a few ideas for what she wanted to do next━perhaps including another little meeting with her hunter friend━but if she was one thing, it was impatient. Hannya could wait to calculate a plan, execute it and suck out the savoury bits like bone marrow when it was done, but she was a demon, and that meant chasing instant gratification.
Like ruining a marriage.
Or using her boss as a ploy in driving apart said marriage.
Casper, Hector and Lawrence were playthings most of the time━Joel was difficult; he was the real challenge, the wall she wanted to pick at until it came crumbling down. Dolly whimpered and whined on the inside; she begged for the man’s life, though she seemed to have no idea it was already over. He was in a loveless marriage (though his loyalty to his wife kept Hannya interested) and stuck with a partner who did nothing but stalk both her and Joel. His only source of entertainment was the demon herself. Without her, he’d have no purpose. Dolly should’ve been thanking her, really━he’d probably kill himself if he didn’t have Hannya.
With that in mind, she ensured she was on the list for those putting themselves up for auction during the town’s event, and sent Joel an invite. If his wife was ever home or paying attention to him, she might’ve seen it, but the thought of it alone had the hair on Hannya’s arms standing.
Hey pumpkin, see you at the founder’s party later? Bring some cash xo
She was sure they took card, but she figured it sounded more intriguing that way. Hannya sent the same text to Hector, though she replaced ‘pumpkin’ with ‘baby’ and expected her plan to go swimmingly.
Wearing a baby blue dress that clung to every previously-useless curve on Dolly’s body, Hannya strutted onto the stage once she was called, moving as if it were her own personal catwalk. Under the lights, she posed with one hand on her hip, knowing she looked like the picture of beauty standing there above everyone. The dress’ pattern caught the shadows, making her appear as though she was carved from marble━soft enough if anyone got to touch.
She wore the giant diamond ring “Hector” had given her, too, of course. She wasn’t about to let Joel down.
And there, on the stage, with long, blonde curls draped down her back, Hannya began to emit the energy she was created to spread. Just like Daddy, she cast envy out into the crowd, filling the space until the weaker ones choked and removed themselves. She watched as men turned to ogle her, practically drooling while their wives became a deep, angry red, fists clenched at their sides. They’d want her off the stage soon enough, though they wanted to be her for now. Their husbands didn’t look at them this way anymore━they hadn’t in years. Hannya was what each of them wanted in their own way, whether it was to be her or be with her━or both.
The auctioneer tried to sell her, though Hannya figured her appearance spoke for itself; the audience wouldn’t be buying her for fucking housework. The woman stuttered over Hannya’s━well, Dolly’s━credentials, and the demon cackled. “What I don’t got in work experience I make up for with lotsa other talents.” Hannya hummed, flashing the crowd a smirk. There were chuckles and light shifting, people bustling in an attempt to get ready for the bidding war. “Grew up in the backwoods of Tennessee, too, so y’know I ain’t afraid to get a lil’ dirty. And I was raised doin’ manual labour━got strong hands, and I always get the job done.” She winked, then cackled lightly, leaving the majority of the crowd to laugh along with her. Another rush of jealousy came, and she couldn’t take the anticipation.
Nodding upwards at the woman running the auction, Hannya’s smirk drained into a thin line. “Alright, get ‘er goin’.”
She tried to appease the demon, though her starting bid wasn’t nearly as high as Hannya thought it should be. “No,” She hissed, gritting her teeth, though she kept her voice low enough so she couldn’t be heard by any (regular) ears in the crowd. “You start at three hundred. Wha’do I look like to you?” Hannya was worth far more, but how much could these bumpkins really shell out? She wanted Joel to at least think he had a chance on that public servant salary.

”Don’t wait up for me. Forbes has got us all pulling double time with event goin’ on this week. I dunno what time I’m gonna be back.” Fingers curling over the top of Jo’s shoulder, Joel bent to kiss the top of his wife’s head. For all the reaction he got from her she might as well have been a statue. Carved of marble and just as still and cold.
Maybe that was a hum of acknowledgement as he let his fingers drift slowly away, but it sure as hell wasn’t the segue to a conversation. ”I’ll see ya … love you.” No response again, just that cold that seemed to linger in Joel’s fingers as they wrapped around his jacket. He glanced back at the kitchen table as he slid out. Jo hadn’t moved an inch, she still frowned at the paperwork in her hands like the answers to the universe were in there. It had been the way Dolly had looked into his eyes.
The shiver ran down his back, spread over his limbs in that spreading, tingling warmth. Not cold. Dolly wasn’t Jolene. In his lap, in his hands, she’d been all heat. Joel sank teeth into his upper lip, rapping his knuckles against the newel post as he jogged down the stairs in the apartment building. The confines of the elevator would’ve just seared that feeling back into his skin again, leaving it glowing like a scarlet letter on his forehead for Ricky to seize upon if he was skulking around the events in town the same way he had the club. Wasn’t like he’d have told him if he was planning on being there, communication was tough when you’d decided to set fire to the bridge connecting you with the only person remotely in your life.
Joel headed for his car with his shoulders stiff, faded denim eyes scanning the street around as he got in. Who woulda thought Ricky could blend into the club well enough not to be seen as he tailed someone he was meant to be able to trust. That ramrod attitude should’ve marked him out, but somehow he hadn’t seen the surveillance. Ricky could’ve been lurking in any shadow now, scowling, waiting for proof that his partner was dicking around in something more than the strictest meaning of the word. There wouldn’t be a conversation then, just a trip to the sheriff’s office and a dismissal that would take his badge rather than leaving him offering it up willingly. For Dolly.
Two minutes into the ride he’d cranked music up on the radio. No help. Just that same crackle beneath his skin, the same way it had been every night since Dolly had slipped away from him. Once upon a time it had been a different imprint of her he had pressed into his flesh, that last day she’d spent in Cunningham it had been her mouth branding him. Now … the shiver ran through him again, had him dragging a hand through his hair as he pulled up into one of the spaces reserved for law enforcement. It wasn’t just Dolly’s mouth he could still feel on his skin.
Adultery.
Acid rushed up the back of his throat, almost sending Joel turning back to the car for the bottle of Maalox in the glove. When it had tipped over from being just trying to get Doll out of that place and into this? He jerked away from a couple emerging from the auction – well, that wasn’t exactly shocking, Carnegie and his ex-wife, if scuttlebutt had it right – with another woman tagging along behind. Joel held the door for the woman, flashing a faint smile as he then stepped in past.
The excuse he’d given to Jo wasn’t exactly a lie. Forbes had asked for an extended police presence this week, but like Carnegie, his hadn’t been one of the hands shooting up for it. He’d just needed to look, needed to start pulling things together on the investigation to prove to Ricky that Dolly wasn’t on the other side of things. She was innocent, caught up in events she never would’ve gone into willingly. She was Hector Dacre’s pawn and the ring on her finger was just more proof of it. And so was Dolly’s invite.
It caught the light. Twinkling on her finger up on the stage. Lights bathed Dolly, highlighting everything he hadn’t seen until she was already walking away from him. The roll of notes in his pocket, taken out of the bank, the itch of guilt building between his shoulder blades as the ATM spat the stack out. Joel slipped his hands into his pockets, watching the way Dolly posed with a pit opening up in his stomach. She didn’t have to do that, parading herself for these leaches, there was so much more to her than what she revealed, but none of them would know it. That didn’t stop the heat from building in his throat though, his gaze cutting to the men and women around him. Every set of eyes was fixed on Dolly, men slowly leaning in, turning red for a different reason to their wives.
The acid rose further, strangling his voice as he went to holler over Dolly’s voice to tell her to stop. He’d pay every damn dollar in his pocket, in his bank account – their account, Jo would see the withdrawals, but so damn what – if it meant he could protect her from all of that. Joel worked his way forward, the woman running the auction was already throwing an amount out there, but he barely heard her over the whoosh-whoosh-whoosh of his heart beat in his ears. ”Five hundred,” Joel croaked, looking up at Hannya. He could see another figure out of the corner of his eye, dark, glossy, snake like. Hector. ”Make it a thousand.” There was an edge to his voice, a shift in his posture as he stared at the man, the one whose claws were deep in Dolly’s lives, the ones he’d tear free.

Hector loved an excuse to dress up in a sharp suit and sip champagne so naturally, he was drawn to the founder's party in town. It wouldn’t be on the same level as the events he was usually invited to in the big cities of America, but it was a reason to mingle with the locals and make sure they knew who he was. It was amusing to think he moved to Mystic Falls to keep a low profile. The man didn’t know the meaning of such a thing. He wanted his name in everyone's mouth. He wanted to be known. Centuries ago he would sail from port to port, making a name for himself everywhere he went, but it was harder to have that kind of influence in the cities. Mystic Falls however was a different ball game. Hannya text him earlier that day inviting him to the party, promising it would be good fun. He wondered how many other men she'd sent the same message to. Hector grabbed hold of a champagne glass as soon as he entered the building, taking a small sip, and swirling the liquid around his mouth for a moment before swallowing. It could have been better champagne, but it could have been worse. Not only was he drawn in by the party, but also the auction. It was a chance to see if any beautiful women put themselves forward, so he could hand over a generous amount of money to spend the day with them, although it would have to be an outstanding woman for him to do so. It was a potential idea he could steal for a night at the club though. It had a Valentine's day feel to it. For once the club nor the bar were at the top of his list of priorities. The conversation he had with Pierre had been rattling around in his mind for a few days now and Hector was on the hunt for this Mal person. The one who could apparently bend the rules and somehow make some supernatural beings who were strong and impervious to a stake being driven through their heart. He hadn’t made his mind up whether he wanted to bring this other vampire down or join him. One thing he did know was he didn’t like this whole operation going down without him somehow involved. No, he couldn’t join the operation. That would be a massive ‘screw you’ to Pierre and his son. In Hector’s mind, Pierre’s son had been made into something better by becoming a vampire, but he could tell Pierre didn’t agree with that. Some people carried their vampirism with them like a curse, but Hector wore it as a badge of pride. After years of fighting at the beginning, he finally succumbed to what he was. A person who would tear your throat out Hector knocked back the cheap glass of champagne before replacing it on the tray and swiftly grabbing another one. He swept up a few sausage rolls as he made his way past the buffet, throwing a few into his mouth as he looked out into the crowd. He didn’t catch the woman announcing the next person to get up on stage, but he instantly recognised that cackle. Cold and piercing along with her drawn-out southern accent. He rolled his eyes a little as she continued speaking, selling herself to the crowd as she always did. Three hundred dollars as the starting price. He knew Hannya would be seething if it settled so low. He moved through the crowd, sipping on the champagne with a tight smirk on his face as he watched the bids roll in. The numbers were climbing. Another male in the crowd even yelled out a thousand dollars, looking straight at Hector, as if he knew him. The bid was less than the price of his suit. He let out a low whistle, eyes locked on the man before he looked up at the auctioneer. “Two thousand dollars.” He paused for a moment, casting a glance back at the light-haired man as there were mummers and whispers from the crowd JOEL MCGRATH HANNYA

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ DAMN, SHE WAS A FUCKIN’ MASTERMIND, HUH? AROUND SINCE the beginning of time and still hadn’t lost her touch. Inviting both━well, two━of her men to bid on her worked within seconds. Joel spotted Hector and immediately raised his bet. The crowd (and auctioneer) seemed baffled, and Hannya raised her chin in pride. It still wasn’t enough for her, but she’d be damned if she wasn’t the most expensive date tonight. Ah, she was damned either way, but the point still stands━Hannya was more than this town could handle.
Awarding Joel with a smile didn’t seem to deter Hector. She heard his voice loud and clear, ringing over the mutters and grumbles from onlookers. He doubled Joel’s bet, and Hannya soaked in the jealousy. Not only was it more than the rest of the crowd could afford, but Hector was a source of envy himself. Attractive, clean-cut and well-dressed, and if the men weren’t already jealous enough, they would be now.
‘Going once, going twice… sold!’
“To Mr. Dacre,” Hannya purred, grinning broadly at him, lifting her left hand to wiggle the ring he’d “given” her. It wouldn’t mean anything to him, but it would to Joel, which was the important part.
Speaking of, Hannya turned to find him again in the crowd, smiling sadly. She shrugged as if to say ‘whaddaya gonna do?’ and began her slow descent down the stairs, leaving everyone with a gorgeous view━a better memory than anything they’d see for the rest of their miserable lives.
Hannya completed her slow, purposeful strut to Hector and drew him in, arms falling around his shoulders. “Glad ya came,” She whispered, leaning in to skim her lips over his. “Can’t wait for ya t’do it again.” Humming, she swiped her tongue over his lips and drew back. “That’s one’f the detectives lookin’ into the club. Let’s go say hi.” She could still feel Joel there, watching, wanting. “And if ‘e asks ‘bout our engagement, just play along. Spouses can’t testify ‘gainst each other in court.” Hannya added quietly and winked, taking one of Hector’s hands. “Plus, he wants me.” Hector would know what she wanted in return━jealousy━and she expected him to help scratch that itch.
She led him straight to Joel and put on one of those shy smiles, pure Dolly━and definitely not Hannya. “Hiya, pump━” Cutting herself off, she shot a nervous glance at Hector before returning her gaze to Joel. “Hey, Joel.” She corrected, “Happy ya made it.” At least that was true.

A bachelor auction. He might as well have put himself up on that stage for all that was left in his marriage now. A woman who hadn’t even acknowledged his presence in the apartment before he’d slipped out, one who’d ignored every session of marriage counselling he’d set up until he’d given up even calling it that. It was counselling just him for now and Joel suspected that soon enough even that wouldn’t be enough to keep him trying.
Love was still lodged there like a thorn in his heart. He could feel it with each beat of it, digging in deeper when he was this close to Hannya. When he’d been … Nausea had bitten deep at the mental image when he’d been outside in the car, that now familiar burn (not the pleasurable sort that had settled into his limbs like he’d sunk into a hot bath when every inch of him had ached for one when Dolly had drawn him close on the couch) rising up his throat. Eventually it was going to eat through his stomach, maybe straight up into his chest. It wouldn’t pull the thorn free, it would just eat it up, leaving everything in him hollow. Maybe it already had.
Seeing her up on the stage, Joel realised maybe it was a little too late for that. The heat was already rushing in on a bitter wave. It wasn’t just him seeing Dolly up there, eyes all over the room were fixed on her and Doll was basking in it. Tension started to pull tight inside of him, a rubber band that encompassed his heart, his gut, his conscience stretching so far it felt like it would cut him in two. Some part of him wanted to call a stop to it – this town’s charitable foundations could gather their money another way. None of them could see her, not the same way he did. They were all looking, but it wasn’t the woman in the skin tight dress and blinding ring he saw up there. Joel saw her, Doll, not walking away from him this time.
Dacre stood there in the crowd, champagne held in his hand like it belonged there. An expensive suit, undoubtedly cut to show off his stretch of shoulders instead of taken off of some Nordstrom’s shelves for court. Lips pursing to let out a whistle as their eyes met. Competition. Dolly caught between the two of them like some prize to win, only she was more than that. ”Three,” Joel croaked, not bothering to meet the eye of either woman on stage. It was like he couldn’t tear his eyes away from the man who was dragging Doll down into the filth he revelled in. That fire burned brighter in the pit of his stomach, leaving his hands shaking with the need to mess up that pretty face. A muttered word was all it would take, that barely used power inside of him welling up to shatter the glass in that manicured hands.
The price was upped again. A quick calculation leaving Joel swallowing hard. He couldn’t. Not even if he cleared out everything he had to hand, cards, their joint account, it wasn’t going to be enough now and Jo … Fuck. Mouth falling open, he looked up at Hannya, shaking his head like he was trying to deny what was going on. There was no denying it though. The woman on stage was already calling an end to things. Dacre had won. And Doll was …
There were protests from the crowd as he started to push towards Doll, lecherous old men bristling like he’d ruffled their feathers. They should’ve had their eyes on their own wives, the women now pawing at their husbands’ arms, wanting the attention Doll had gathered in like a plant did the sun. Hatred of the guy sizzled at the back of his throat, almost spewing out on a rush of something foul. He could’ve spat it up, right there on the floor, but it felt like it would just keep coming while Dacre still had a hand on her.
Hannya trailed down the stairs, drifting through the crowd – away from him. Joel held up shaking fingers in the face of a waiter who tried to offer him a glass of the champagne he wished Dacre was going to choke on. The guy took one look at his face and backed away – it didn’t matter how glossy this town was, there was always something shady going on, discretion needed. Ricky would’ve been clucking his tongue, disapproval pouring off of him.
Before he got to her Dolly was turning, her arms wrapped around him, lipstick staining Dacre’s mouth the way it had done his when … Joel stopped, lifted a hand, rubbing the back of it restlessly over his lips as they turned towards him. Maybe de la Peña had taught him something after all – restraint. He didn’t tear Dacre’s hands right off of her. ”Doll,” he croaked. Mouth tight, he dipped his head at Hector, not bothering to offer up a hand. ”If I’d known you were gonna be up there I would made it before … and with a little more money in my pocket. I’m guessing your fiance’s got plenty in the back. Am I right Mr … Dacre is it? I’m sure Doll’s told you plenty about me, given how close we are.” He sniffed, eyeing the guy again. It wasn’t like he’d whipped it out to pee on the floor, but guys knew how the territory was marked. His with his claim of history, Hector’s with that gaudy piece of crap on Doll’s finger.

Hector wasn’t sure if it was Hannya’s looks accompanied by a killer body or some secret demon power that had the crowd fixated on her. Either way, she knew how to work the people with every single set of eyes on her, including Hector’s. Unlike most in the crowd though he knew what lurked under the fabric that clung her to curves. The money was burning a hole in his pocket and he was prepared to put forward thousands more just to prove a point to this unnamed man that was glancing over at him. It was apparent he wanted to win Hannya, but Hector had other plans.. Two thousand dollars was out of this man’s price range and Hector won his prize. Hannya would belong to him for the evening. The flash of the ring went completely unnoticed by Hector. He waited until she started to make her way down off the stage before heading over towards her, “Spectacular performance.” He commented once he drew closer. Her arms snaked around his body, resting on his shoulders, her tongue gliding over his lips softly. If only they weren’t standing in public. “Ah…” So there was a reason the light-haired man was staring at Hector and it wasn’t just because he wanted Hannya to himself. “Engagement?” He muttered quietly, but Hannya had already locked hands with him, tugging him towards the detective. She was ready to put on her second performance of the night and she wanted Hector to star alongside her. A role he was prepared to take although he wasn’t entirely sure why Hannya would testify against him in the first place. He drew his hand up, rubbing the pad of his thumb along his lips to remove Hannya’s leftover lipstick as they approached the detective. He slipped his hand out of Hannya’s before gliding it along her lower back, pulling her closer to him, squeezing lightly at her waist. “Please, call me Hector. Mr. Dacre is my father” He offered his other hand up for a handshake, a warm yet false smile plastered across his face. “I don’t believe she’s mentioned you before… have you darling?” Dark eyes ticked over to Hannya, mischief lurking beneath the surface. He flicked his attention back to Joel, “To be honest we both work so much that we don’t really get a lot of alone time together and when we do…” He let out a quiet chuckle before lowering his voice a little to talk, “Well let's just say there’s not a lot of talking if you know what I mean.” Again, he chuckled as his grip on Hannya’s waist tightened a little. There was a benefit in this for Hector, knowing if worked up enough jealously from Joel he was guaranteed a wild night with the demon. JOEL MCGRATH HANNYA

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ NOT ONLY HAD HANNYA MADE HIM JEALOUS, BUT SHE’D ALSO stripped Joel of the very thing his wife took away: his masculinity. It was easy to accomplish that with mortals; older beings were harder to tear down, but they were still susceptible. Hector wasn’t her target for that tonight, though. She’d seen the way he’d looked at her when he tried to ‘be the boss’ and her eyes had darkened, letting Hector know just who she was. She’d allow him to corral her for the night if all went well with Joel.
In any case, she wanted to clear out what was left of Joel before she built him back up. Hannya would be the one to make him whole again, and he’d know she’d deserve all the gratitude. He didn’t have as much money as Hector, and he didn’t have a solid relationship or a claim to anyone━not Hannya and not his wife. He would have to survive this interaction knowing he was lesser, and Hannya figured she’d help his realization along a little.
“S’okay,” She added quietly, still acting meek, pretend embarrassed by nearly calling Joel ‘pumpkin.’ But Hector played his part well, and she giggled as he squeezed her against him, both arms slipping around his middle. Hannya pressed one warm, blushing cheek to his chest and laughed, “Yeah, Joel knows allll about that. His wife works a lot, too.” Except she never slept with him. Hannya wondered if Jolene had smelled another woman’s perfume on her sheets; if it’d bothered her━if she’d even noticed.
Hannya gently squeezed Hector as a way of offering a silent ‘good job,’ “But, uh, yeah, I have,” She added, her voice dipping down to that shy, sugary-sweet level as she looked up at Hector, then to Joel, trying to communicate something in her eyes, like, See, I know what it’s like━he doesn’t listen to me, either.
“We grew up together.” She added, starting as though she was trying to jog Hector’s memory. “Best friends ever since we were itty-bitty lil’ things,” Hannya smiled, “I ain’t seen ‘im since I left home, though… then we reconnected when Joel came t’Mystic Falls. S’really special, ain’t it?” Cooing, she looked to Hector again and fluttered her lashes, shifting so she stood on her own beside him once more. One arm still hung loosely around his back, but the other slid to his chest, her palm resting in the middle of it━a picture of the perfect couple. “I missed him real bad.” Hannya puffed out a breath, shooting Joel another one of those sad smiles.
Slipping out of Hector’s arms for a moment, she walked into Joel’s and wrapped her arms around him, squeezing his chest into hers. “Really am happy ya made it,” She whispered, turning her head to smile at him and brushing her lips against Joel’s cheek along the way. After just long enough for Joel to feel her body against his, Hannya effectively ripped herself away and stepped out of his arms, slipping back into her spot at Hector’s side.

Ricky hadn’t been the one to let Dolly into his apartment, or to … heat spiked in his gut again, cranked by more than just anger towards his partnet … but it was his fault he’d been here tonight to have this shoved in his face. Trying to prove his loyalty leaving him having to watch as Dolly wrapped herself around that son of a bitch who hadn’t ended up behind bars fast enough. If Ricky had spent every minute or every day working on breaking up whatever Hector Dacre was doing at the club instead of clamping down around what he knew so hard he could crap a diamond, maybe Doll would be free by now. No ring shackling her finger or putting herself up on the block for her fiancé to buy like this was some ancient marketplace and Dolly was a …
The nausea burned a thousand times harder than the champagne would’ve done, maybe not as much as Dacre’s face would’ve done when he smashed a glass into it. Ricky would’ve had his ’I knew it’ moment then. The job would be entirely gone and Jo would be the one picking up her husband from a cell while Doll took care of him. Joel had to clamp down just as hard as Ricky did, without the practice at it there was an ache in his chest.
Manners came hard, colouring his use of Hector’s name. Hector, like they were on first name terms. Joel grunted at the club owner’s charming words, shaking the man’s hand with nerves twitching under his skin, wanting to crush. For Doll he held back, for the sake of not losing the badge when he was dragged up on assault charges. ”Work can be a real pain,” Joel said tightly. He fisted his hand as he drew it back, knuckles whitening then cracking as he curled it tighter. ”Takes a real toll on a relationship … leaves you deaf sometimes too, especially, if …” He’d been chattering over Hector’s chuckle, but the asshole wasn’t done with the posturing. Joel stopped like he’d taken a hoof to the nuts. The breath he sucked in through his nose wasn’t enough, it just left him standing like a statue, staring at that smug face.
Dolly’s giggle cut through it, another blow, but this one sharper, a blade to the heart. Jo. Jo was still his wife, even if it was just in name now, she didn’t deserve any of this, any of what had happened in her own home. Shame bit deep for a moment before it was washed away by Dolly’s quiet, almost meek voice. Joel cleared his voice, his lips twitching into a faint smile for her. ”S’okay,” he echoed, not bothering to finish what he’d been saying about if one partner in a relationship was just using the other, going purposefully deaf. ”I figured you would.” He hadn’t mentioned Doll to Jolene though, had he? The doc knew more about her than just about anybody else, but he’d not said a word to his wife.
Joel’s smile was for Doll alone, freezing on and off as she fluttered her lashes, as she trailed her hands over Dacre the way she once had him. He forced his fist to open, rubbed it over his own chest as though he was feeling out her touch there. ”I missed her too. Always wondered where Doll had gone, hoped nobody was takin’ advantage of her. She’s got such a good heart … would do anythin’ for anyone…” Even if they didn’t deserve it, although that went without saying.
There was a flash of triumph on his face as he Doll came to him. He smirked at Dacre over Doll’s shoulder, setting his hands on her back and sliding them lower. Joel turned his head slightly, touched his lips to the side of Doll’s head as hers found his cheek. He didn’t have to pull Doll closer to feel her body imprint on his again, the pressure against his chest as he breathed, the soft cradle of her hips a welcome against his own. It wasn’t easy to ignore the effect she had, although apparently Dacre was immune as Doll went back to him. ”I’m glad I could too, even if I didn’t end up winnin’.” Jealousy rose under his skin, the green haze drifting over his eyes as the waiter returned. ”Maybe I can get you both somethin’ to drink. Champagne? Or maybe Hector wants to get us somethin’ stronger from up at the bar…” Joel flashed his teeth as he lifted his chin towards the back of the room. Away from Doll.

Hector wasn’t entirely sure exactly what Hannya’s game was with this Joel man. It seemed like she wanted to make him jealous but then dropped the news Joel had a wife. He knew there was no point asking her though, he was just happy to play along with her, especially as it seemed like Joel wasn’t enjoying it. He was relishing in it just as much as Hannya was. “It makes all those moments you spend together a little more special.” Stomach-churning stuff, but that’s what a loving husband would say about his wife-to-be. He’d had hundreds of conversations with Hannya over the years and never once had Joel’s name crept into a single one of them. He was genuinely confused given she was an old-ass demon who didn’t have a best friend from when she was an ‘itty-bitty’ child. Until the ball dropped. “Oh you’re the Joel… sorry my mind is still a little bit frazzled. Probably from the auction, which was very exciting… I’m sorry you didn’t win, better luck next time though.” Hannya’s instructions to him didn’t include being an asshole, but it was fun. Plus, there was no way in hell he would let someone outbid him and flash their cash harder than him. Considering the garments on Joel’s back though he probably couldn’t afford anything over thousand dollars anyway. In fact, that was probably a stretch for him. Doll. He’d spent all this time thinking that Hannya’s body belonged to a girl called Hannya from the south, but apparently not. Not that it mattered as the girl who inhabited it once upon a time was probably dead by now. According to Joel this Doll girl had a good heart and would do anything for anyone, unlike Hannya. “Heartwarming.” He responded, glancing down at Hannya with a smile. “I’ve been taking good care of her” He turned his attention back to Joel, wearing the same smile he just flashed at Hannya. Warm and friendy, despite feeling none of those things. “And you seem like a great guy.” He broke away from Hannya with ease in an attempt to show he didn’t care that she was about to slip her arms about Joel. Fake jealously wasn’t going to satisfy Hannya anyway. Hector didn’t mirror Joel’s smirk though, instead, he stood there looking genuinely happy because he knew he would be the one to take Hannya home that evening. He glided his hand around Hannya’s shoulder, placing his hand in the upper middle of her back, “No need… keep your wallet in your pocket. I’ll grab us a few drinks from the bar.” He turned his body to Hannya, moving his hand to her hip as the other one snaked around the back of her neck as he pulled her close for a kiss. It wasn’t just a quick peck on the lips though, it was one of those deep passionate kisses. He couldn’t wait to get her back to his apartment. He pulled back, keeping her eyes locked on hers, “I’ll get you the usual.” He fully broke away from Hannya, casting his gaze on Joel. “Joe. I’ll get us both a rum and coke.” The guy’s name hadn’t slipped his mind at all, but Hector just felt like rubbing salt in the wound. He threw one last look at Hannya before disappearing in the sea of people, heading for the bar. JOEL MCGRATH HANNYA

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ OOOH, HANNYA LOVED IT WHEN THE MEN FOUGHT. SHE’D experienced it more than once in her lifetime━in the millions, really━but its excitement never wore off. Each time there were different men, different social settings, and different etiquette. Hector was from a time when men could draw their swords and battle it out, but Joel was not, and that likely wouldn’t happen here━though she wouldn’t be upset if it did.
Hector knew his job, though. He helped rub salt in Joel’s plentiful wounds and had jealousy surging from the man. It dusted Hannya’s skin like a summer breeze and filled her up with one deep breath.
Dolly was a girl with a kind heart, wasn’t she? Except for that tiny part of her that’d been consumed with jealousy for this man, and had eventually invited the wrong kind of divine intervention. Hannya was more than happy with her, though━especially when her past kept supplying these little meals.
She blushed at his compliments and let her head fall to Hector’s shoulder, admiring Joel as she did. Hector only added fuel to the flame, and her expression softened, turning sad for only Joel to see. He doesn’t get it, pumpkin, not like you do. Not like ya’ve always got me.
The hug was for added effect, and it did just the trick. Joel’s body surged with the sin she loved most, and Hannya stepped away knowing he’d keep aching for her━just like they all did. She barely suppressed her smirk when his hands slid lower, likely making a show of it to Hector, which she adored. Poor Joel, the married man, having to participate in a game of Monkey in the Middle with a girl he’d always overlooked. One he could’ve had if he hadn’t been so fuckin’ stupid. But now, because of him, Hannya got her fun.
Hector took his cue to leave for a moment, posturing as he did. Her arms went around his shoulders, giving him everything through that kiss, meeting his passion with visible fervour━just for Joel… and a little thank you to her ‘fiance’ for a great performance.
“Thanks, baby,” She hummed as he stepped away, furrowing her brow at his mention of Joe.
“It’s…” Hannya began, but Hector was already heading through the thick crowd and, slowly, her eyes landed on the man remaining. “Joel.” She said softly, as though she were still correcting Hector, though her gaze was locked on Joel now. She smiled sheepishly, offering a light, “Sorry,” on Hector’s behalf.
Hannya stepped in again, seemingly breaking that barrier that people in a relationship were never supposed to cross. Glancing over his shoulder to check that the coast was clear━though she knew Hector could care less━Hannya took Joel’s hands and led him through the sea of people in another direction. She slipped into a corridor likely only meant for staff, where they could talk in their own little bubble.
The volume dampened significantly, and she kept the upper hand, only letting him go when Joel’s back was against a wall in the nearest corner. Hannya could slip away if needed, but Joel? Oh, he was trapped, just the way she liked him. “I really wish you woulda won.” She admitted softly, letting go of his hands to press them to his broad chest. They slid outwards, and up to his shoulders as she moved in, nearing his face at an alarming rate. “I know I shouldn’t say it, but I haven’t stopped thinkin’ about…” Hazel eyes fell to his lips like she an addict without her fix. “... And I just… I can only imagine what we woulda done if it was you, not him,”
Hannya swallowed hard and dragged her gaze up from Joel’s mouth to his eyes, slotting her hips against his, feeling the hard lines of his warm body against Dolly’s soft curves. It’d been a long time since she was the frumpy kid in flannel who used to toddle alongside him every day, and she wanted to remind Joel of that every chance she got.

Dacre wasn’t just leaving a sour taste in his mouth, bile was burning its way up his throat. How much had Dolly told him about her old friend? That his wife had basically become a stranger to him at this point, a void in the apartment they shared. Someone he didn’t have those special moments with when they did finally get to spend some time together. Jo was his wife, it wasn’t supposed to be the way things were between them. He was meant to be at things like this with her on his arm, instead of feeling like he needed to tear Dolly away from this asshole. Joel curled his fingers into his palm, trying to swallow the jealousy back before he let it spill out and destroyed everything he had left here.
Forcing a smile at Dacre felt like it was gonna shatter him, little shards of green spilling out of him to cut them all to pieces. He gritted his teeth, a tiny tremor starting up at the corner of his mouth as he was forced to hold the gesture. ”Almost losing your fiancée to another man, I guess it’d get anybody worked up. Hope you make the most out of your prize.” A sentiment that almost choked him. Men like Dacre used people, wrung everything possible out of them before they discarded the husk left of a life that had started with such promise.
The smile for Doll had been softer, growing sad as Dacre smiled down at her. How long was it going to be before Dacre threw her aside? The sick feeling intensified. A man like that only took good care of himself. ”If anything ever happened to her …” Joel started before he caught himself. He grunted at Hector’s compliment, hearing the false ring to it. Dolly knew, she looked at him like the only one who understood was him, Dacre didn’t see what was there, only what he wanted to, the trophy wife who’d have every man in the room turning green with envy.
It was easy to let himself sink into the game after that, pulling Dolly close as she came to him, his expression only growing colder as Dacre stood there like a fool, smiling while his woman wrapped herself around someone else. Each breath was tinted with the smell of Dolly as she went back to Dacre temporarily. Joel brushed his knuckles over his mouth as he turned the offer to grab them drinks into an invitation for Hector to leave the pair of them alone. ”Sounds good,” Joel drawled, tearing his gaze away as Hector pawed at Dolly, a show of dominance by a man trying to stake out territory he was gonna lose soon enough. He didn’t look back until Dacre had broken away, leaving the two of them alone. ”You don’t have to apologise for him,” he told her honestly. ”He’s a big boy.” And an even bigger asshole.
Joel drew a deep breath as Hannya took his hand, wanting to draw her in and promise he’d get her out of there. She was doing it all on her own though, leaving Dacre at the bar as the two of them disappeared. He glanced over his shoulder as they slipped into a corridor off of the main room, making sure that Dacre hadn’t changed his mind. The moment Doll had him pressed into the corner, out of sight of the door, he was letting out a deep breath, shaking his head. ”I’m sorry, Doll. If I’d had the money … I wouldn’t have stopped. I would’ve got you away from him.” His hands settled on her upper arms, fluttering there for a second before he eased them to her sides, not pushing her away as he should’ve done. Jesus. His breath exploded out of him as her gaze fell to his mouth. ”Doll. I’m … I shouldn’t be doing this. I’m meant to be getting you away, not falling …” Into this. There was to unpack all the baggage of his marriage later, trying to find some way to convince himself that it was finally over.
His marriage wasn’t over yet though. He tried to remind himself of that as his hands slid lower, fingertips denting the soft flesh of Dolly’s hips as he held her against him. ”Last time was a …” He wasn’t going to call it a mistake, that’d be like a starving man apologising when he finally got a bite of food. ”I could smell you there for days after,” he whispered hoarsely. ”When your hands were on him just now, I … knew how they felt, Doll. I can’t stop thinking about it either.” And it was driving him crazy. He dipped his head, nosing at her throat. ”Come with me now. We’ll figure all the rest of it out later. Let me get you somewhere safe.” Jo would understand, she’d have to.

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ JOEL DIDN’T THINK THE WORST IN THE BEGINNING, AND THAT’S why she loved playing with him so much. It was the innocence, the fun, the unwillingness to accept his fate. Like a mouse befriending a cat, unaware that he was on the menu for dinner.
She’d consume him now if he let her, crowd and Hector be damned. But it was far too early. The more Dolly twisted and screamed inside her, the more Hannya wanted to torture him. She’d lost her chance to do this the innocent way; now it was Hannya’s turn.
Finally, he seemed to realize at least part of her game, and started in on the regrets. They were pathetic, and nothing she hadn’t heard before. She loved it, though━how desperate men always got in the beginning when they wrestled with their morals.
But… falling. Really? So soon? He was weaker than she thought; sex-starved and in love with the first woman who showed him any real attention. Dolly’s belly fluttered, full of butterflies, nearly exploding with excitement. She wouldn’t know what to do with him in this situation; she was lucky Hannya was in control. She was smart enough to realize it wasn’t the kind of love Dolly wanted it to be.
Her hips pressed into his, stilling with the press of Joel’s fingers, as if he could truly control her. “Don’t say it.” She whispered quickly as he trailed off, big, wet eyes slipping up to his. Dolly’s heart would truly break if he called it a mistake, but Hannya was far more resilient, and she knew that was just another thing they all said to make themselves feel better.
Finally, he relented. Hannya moaned softly at his admission, letting her hips roll into his. Her scent might’ve been gone from his apartment, but he’d never forget that sound, nor would he be able to mentally scrub away the feeling of her hips on his. “I want them on you,” She whispered, squeezing his shoulders as if testing the feeling of him beneath her fingers, “Only you. Always you. I wanna feel… everythin’ else…” Hannya’s mouth came up, dragging her teeth over his ear lobe, then bending her head to the side, welcoming his lips on her throat.
“You got no idea how… how much I wanna go with ya, pumpkin,” She whispered, opening her eyes and spotting Hector walking back through the crowd. Perfect timing. Hannya gasped, pushing at him as she leaned back again. “I can’t, I can’t.” She whimpered helplessly, staring up at him again, though her eyes were full of silent pleads this time. “Hector’s gonna be… suspicious if we’re gone too long. And I can’t━I won’t━” Her eyes said I’m scared, but that was just more manipulation. Hannya tore away from him and walked through the crowd back to Hector, nervously fixing her hair and dress as she did, playing the part of a nervous, cheating partner.
