til now. It was pretty picture postcard perfect. A small town in Tennessee, twin boys and their little sister. A farm complete with horses and a father's deep and abiding love for football that led him to play coach while his wife patched up the town's folk as a nurse in the ER. The truth was far grittier, a father pushing his sons too hard, one who went down a troubled path and Joel ... the kid just trying to keep the balance in the whole thing. Joel was the kid who got perfect grades, who did his chores without being asked and had a sweet friendship with a girl who'd been his best friend practically from day dot. When high school hit even that surface perfection cracked. Unknown to Joel a demon infested his best friend, killed his girlfriend and swanned out of town. His brother ended up in a coma for three months when his voices caught up with him and that caring momma asked for a divorce and high tailed it out of Cunningham. In the wake of that Joel only saw one path for himself. Law enforcement, an attempt to clean up the town and help the folks of Cunningham do the right thing. It didn't matter that Joel ended up in a marriage where the love slowly faded away leaving only duty, or that his partner wanted to drag him clear to Virginia to help with a narcotics case he'd barely tell him about. The right thing was the only important thing and that's all Joel's ever tried to do.
friends. Having an identical twin might've meant that Joel's closest friend without hesitation was his brother but unlike most twins Joel was never close to Vaughn. His best friend from kindergarten to high school was Dolly, until like his mom, she high tailed it out of town under a dark cloud. Since then Joel's pretty much kept to himself. Break through that surface civility and manners and you've got someone who'll be loyal to you for life but it's gonna take some work to crack that shell.
enemies. Undoubtedly Joel's made a few on the job. Start dealing in his town and he's gonna have an issue with it. Anything deeper than just the job Joel's unaware of.
family. Keith and Maren. High school sweethearts. A happily married, super prepared couple when their boys, Joel and Vaughn were brought into the world. A marriage showing some cracks by the time little Shelby came along three years later. A family entirely broken by the time high school ended. After his parents' divorce Joel saw nothing of his mom. After his brother enlisted he saw little of him too. Joel's a dutiful son and a decent brother but his family connections are stretched thin.
lovers. Joel's a man unlucky in love. His best friend's crush on him saw his first relationship end in death when the demon who slipped into poor Dolly killed Jeanine, making it look like a drug overdose. His second serious relationship ended up in marriage with Jolene but just a handful of years later that marriage is down to practically just cohabiting, the affection between the two of them gone and the only hope of getting anything back marriage counselling.
