Leah was fuming that the witch didn’t want money. Instead Cassie had handed Leah a list of magical objects to obtain if the spell worked. She couldn’t argue it either because Cassie had Leah’s imaginary balls in her hands, squeezing them tightly. She kept the list from Remzi, telling him the girl wanted money and Leah had already sorted that. There was nothing for him to worry about. All he had to do was turn up at the location which happened to be a disused factory on the outskirts of Mystic Falls. Cassie said something about space and somewhere with no fire alarms. The place was perfect. The whole resurrection shit was supposed to happen a few weeks ago, but she had to convince both Durmaz men that this would work. She gave Raik the address and told him if he wanted to turn up, he could, otherwise, Cassie would be dragging his sorry soul back into his body regardless of where he was. Remzi was just as resilient, but he was a key factor so she couldn’t turn her back on him and tell him to do as he pleased. She arrived at the factory early that morning so that Raik’s body could defrost on the warehouse floor. The man was a solid lump by now, but in twelve hours or so he would be nice and thawed out. Hopefully. Leah had made sure his body was covered with a white sheet, in an attempt to hide the huge slash across his throat that was still visible. The rest of Cassie’s list was easy enough. Candles, sage, matches. Remzi promised to bring along some personal items. She perched down next to Raik’s body, letting out a slow exhale as she ran her fingers through her hair. The nerves were overwhelming her body as she thought about what would happen if this didn’t work. Remzi would flip out, maybe even go for Cassie, forcing Leah to wedge herself between him and the witch. Promise number one, keep Cassie alive. Promise number two, don’t turn on Cassie if it did fuck up. She pulled the list of demands out from her back pocket, studying it once again. With her other hand, she took her phone out of hethr back pocket and took a photo of the list before sending it off to her non-biological dad. The man was a fountain of knowledge. Leah then pulled herself upright, disappearing out of the wardrobe to fill her day with meaningless work and souls. Eventually nightfall came and she reappeared back in the warehouse, except Cassie was there this time, getting everything ready. “Looks like the set of Practical Magic in here.” She stepped forward, glancing down at Raik’s body. The frost that had been clinging to his beard for months had melted away, but he hadn’t started to decompose. The smell wasn’t yet there. “His brother will be here soon with Raik’s personal belongings… but before he comes, if he asks about repayment or any shit like that you tell him I’ve already paid you, okay?” She moved away from Raik, observing the number of candles that lay around his body. Worry had started to set in, tightening around her stomach and causing her heart to beat a little bit faster. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE WONDERED WHETHER OR NOT THIS WAS a good idea. She’d thought the same thing about Kace, though, and that ended up not being awful━it turned out well, actually, so maybe this would be alright, too. Not bringing him back would be kinda selfish, wouldn’t it? Henrik risked a lot to resurrect Cassie after she died prematurely (and due to a ritual like Raik), so she was just helping someone like her. Thinking about it that way made the guilt a little easier.
Maybe the wishlist of rare items would help Nicky, too. Nothing would ease the burn of Mandy’s disappearance, but still. She didn’t want to fade into the background of uselessness as soon as some bad shit went down.
She couldn’t go to anybody for comfort, either. She and Linc were still on the outs (or, at least, it felt like it), Nicky couldn’t for obvious reasons, and there was no way Monique would listen to her whine. Even if it wasn’t about bringing someone back to life, she’d just… probably zone out or claim they had more important shit to talk about. Cassie wondered if the Harvest Ritual had done that, or if Monique would’ve been there for her before.
Maybe Cassie was difficult to be friends with now. Maybe she was easy before, convenient, and now they were only stuck together because of the Ritual.
No, no, that wasn’t freaking helpful right now. This was about bringing back a guy who’d been wrongly killed just like her, not about Cassie’s own high school bullshit. Granted, it was, like, murder-y, witch-y high school bullshit, but still.
They were a few weekends late to the original plan, but Cassie didn’t mind so much━it’s not like she had a packed schedule with a million things to do. The most she did now was sit at the shop and try to upsell the (few and far between) customers.
Wandering into the warehouse with her bag, she halted by the door, spotting the area━empty, save for the dead fucking body on the floor. Cassie sucked in a shaky breath, reminded herself that A. she’d seen and been through worse, and B. she’d volunteered for this. He didn’t… like, smell or anything, though, so it wasn’t too bad. After a brief pause, she continued forward and settled on the ground near the man’s body, huffing out a sigh.
As she set up, Cassie snuck glances at the man’s body, wondering about him. About his life, what he was like━if she could believe the shit Leah said. And… also why she, like, covered most of his body with a sheet but left his face visible. Was it bad under there? Was he gonna come back to life with smelly, blood-stained clothes?
Okay, none of that was her problem.
By the time Leah arrived, Cassie had formed a circle with the white candles, big enough to include the body, Cassie, and space for a few more people━plus the strategically set up ring of candles in the middle. They were arranged clockwise for each element in the order they would be called: Earth (green), Water (dark blue), Fire (red), Air (light blue) and Spirit (purple).
“Hi━” Cassie started, though Leah had already started in with her comments, making the girl frown. Okay, yeah, so her life resembled a witch movie a little bit, but she’d prefer The Craft. Actually, maybe not…
“Um, okay,” She replied to Leah’s next few words, though that was when Cassie realized she was supposed to get payment beforehand. Considering what Kace had said about Leah (and what Cassie witnessed herself), she shouldn’t have trusted her, but, well… it was hard not to. Especially when someone needed the same kind of help she had. “Just so you know, it is supposed to be paid beforehand. But…” Trailing off, Cassie smiled softly at the form she watched appear in the warehouse. He didn’t come from anywhere, just like Leah had, though she recognized him as the body on the floor. Raik. He was a lot better looking when he was, well, animated.
“Hi!” Cassie chimed, beaming at him from where she sat on the floor, trying to make him comfortable. “I’m Cassie. You must be Raik. I… I don’t wanna give you any false hope, but I’m gonna try my best, okay? I’ve only done this once.” Okay, so it didn’t sound that great, but bringing someone back from the dead was no easy task━the fact that she’d already done it had to count for something, didn’t it?!

He had been given the time and the place by Leah. Apparently his attendance was optional, but he didn’t trust anything the reaper said. It was very clear she was clueless about the whole bringing him back to life situation. The only thing that was holding him back was Remzi being there. It took him a few weeks before he checked in on his brother. He would watch over Remzi as he drank himself into a downward spiral, which was to be expected, but he hadn’t been back to see Remzi for a while now. It was aching to watch his brother live on, drinking beer after beer with a different woman in his bed every weekend. By this point Raik wasn’t sure if this was a coping mechanism or Remzi being himself. Salt was rubbed furiously in the wound by their parents as well by finding a woman for Remzi to marry. A woman who was clearly too good for Remzi as she appeared to be sweet and innocent. A person who didn’t need to be dragged into Remzi’s life and potentially end up dead. Leah bombarded him with questions about this mystery woman, but Raik pretended he’d never met her despite their five-minute facetime call. It was evident within the first few seconds Remzi didn’t deserve her. No matter the outcome it was going to be tough for Raik and Remzi. If the spells works then they have a massive fucking bridge to rebuild as brothers, but if it fails then Raik is stuck in limbo and Remzi will no doubt engage in even more reckless behaviour. He warned Leah that he was at the very end of his tether by now because being on the other side was crushingly lonely and he longed for peace. A peace that he was being denied because his brother needed him to come back to life. Even from the beyond he felt like Remzi was controlling his actions with his rash behaviour. Most would jump at the opportunity of being brought back to life, however the excitement just wasn’t there for Raik. He wanted to be alive, but he had yet to forgive his brother for what happened. His mind was constantly swaying between forgiveness and resentment. Whenever the pair fell out as children their parents would laugh, telling the boys they would be friends again by the end of the day. Their arguments were always short-lived, usually ending when Remzi would make a stupid comment and Raik would laugh. This was different though. It wasn’t like Remzi had cracked Raik’s favourite toy gun or Raik had lost Remzi’s favourite toy car. It wasn’t going to take more than a stupid comment from Remzi to fix this and Raik had no idea where to start. Raik approached the warehouse slowly, part of him wanting to bolt back towards Mystic Falls. He wasn’t ready, but he felt backed into a corner by Leah and Remzi. Finding peace in the afterlife wasn’t an option for him, so coming back to life was his only option unless he wanted to spend eternity feeling lonely and cold. As he walked inside he spotted Leah speaking to the other girl, who flashed him a warm smile. “Hey.” Then he spotted his body lying on the floor. Stiff and wearing the same clothes as the night he was killed. It was unnerving so he pulled his eyes away as Cassie spoke again. “Yeah that’s fine. Thanks for helping me out though. I really appreciate it.” Realistically he meant Leah and Remzi really appreciated it. He shoved his hands deep into his jeans pockets as he turned away from his body a little, until he heard another voice in the background. Remzi had arrived. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ REMZI STOOD USELESSLY IN HANNYA’S BEDROOM, staring down at his box of Raik’s things. It turned out his ‘future bride’ could, like, literally be someone else, so Remzi had used that to his advantage. Ayla didn’t seem to necessarily enjoy dressing up as her brother-in-law to fake calls to their parents, but Remzi didn’t exactly care about how she felt. He was supposed to get his brother back today, finally, and now he couldn’t decide on the only fucking task he was supposed to complete.
Bringing Raik’s personal items.
What the fuck was he supposed to take? They had to be meaningful, and they were apparently completely fucking necessary. Remzi reached into the box━the one he pretended hadn’t existed for a long time━and pulled out Raik’s Nazar, the one that matched Remzi’s necklace. They hadn’t gotten them at the same time━Remzi received his from their mom after he almost died in the hospital━but it still meant something, didn’t it?
He picked up Raik’s wallet and then put it back. That kinda shit didn’t matter. There was a picture of him and Katie from high school, and Remzi’s fingers trembled as he snatched it up and tried not to look at it… tried not to think about Katie’s parents. How they wouldn’t get the same treatment as Raik and Remzi’s━a stand-in for their dead kid ‘til the real one got back, the comfort of not knowing━of never knowing. That was Remzi’s fucking fault.
He stuffed the necklace and photo in his pocket and headed out, debating with himself the whole way. He wanted Raik back━nah, fuck, he needed his brother back━even if Raik never spoke to him again. It was Remzi’s fault, after all, he just… part of him hoped it would all be forgiven after this━like his effort would mean something to his brother after everything that had happened.
Leah’s involvement probably wouldn’t help but, fuck, what else was he supposed to fucking do? She was the one who’d set all this shit up. Without her, Remzi… fuck, he wouldn’t even have a chance at getting his brother back.
Remzi finally found the place, appearing in a blur in the main room. Leah was there already, and… Raik’s fucking body, surrounded by candles. Remzi quickly grew uncomfortable, like a crawling feeling snaking up his skin and turning his stomach. “Fuck, does he have to… be on the fucking floor like that?” Ninety percent covered in a sheet, but otherwise completely unprotected. His brother’s face was stiff and lifeless, completely opposite of how Remzi had always seen it. His eyes burned while he quickly looked away and found…
“Shit, it’s you? Daylight ring chick with the over-protective boss?” His brows drew together, staring at the little blonde witch. “Damn, I thought there was more than one witch in this town. Guess not.” He half-smiled, though he was uncomfortable with the fact that Jailbait knew about his dead brother… or anything more than what was surface level, really. “Uh… don’t know if these work, but…” He glanced to where the witch kept looking, finding nothing more than dead air, and then to Leah, not sure who he was addressing. In any case, Remzi pulled the necklace and photo out of his pocket and stood on the edge of the white candle ring, holding them out to Cassie, worried about stepping inside. At her instruction, though, Remzi cautiously walked into the circle and sat where she told him━on the other side of Raik’s body.
As he shifted into his spot, Remzi looked at Leah again, not finding the words to ask her to be closer. He needed her, and that was almost as scary as bringing his dead brother back to life.

Payment beforehand for something that might not work? No way. Leah was about to argue her point, reminding Cassie that she was the one that wanted some rare magical items. Things you couldn’t exactly pick up at Walmart, but Raik showed up. Thank fuck he showed his face. Then Remzi arrived. Relief washed over Leah again. Of course, he didn’t come with the same warm welcoming as Raik. “Would you rather us hang him from the ceiling?” She bit back, but immediately felt guilty. This was his brother lying on the floor. She took a deep breath, glancing over at Remzi, “He has to be here.” Her eyes flickered over to Raik for a second, considering whether or not to tell Remzi his brother was lingering in the room only a few metres away from him. Invisible and anxious. She frowned a little when Remzi announced that Cassie was the chick who made him his daylight ring with the boss who hesitated to help Remzi in the first place. “I’m assuming your boss doesn’t know you here?” She turned her attention to Cassie, “But don’t worry your secret's safe with us.” Leah wasn’t exactly going to go gossiping to everyone and anyone in town that there was a witch who could potentially bring people back from the dead, thus shooting herself in the foot. “My boss doesn’t know I’m here either.” Messing with the natural order and all that shit. It was enough to get her fired and sent to hell, but Remzi was worth it. For now, his happiness outweighed her life. She still couldn’t understand how the pair had reached this stage. Her stomach knotted as Remzi looked over to where Raik was standing. “I’m sure they're fine.” Leah assured him, in an attempt to draw his attention back to Cassie and her. Away from Raik. Leah watched as Remzi moved into position, taking a seat near his brother’s body, looking up at her. No words were needed, she knew he wanted her to step closer and tell him everything was going to be okay. Rewind to last year and she would have been telling Remzi to go fuck himself before throwing insults at him. She would have been keeping a distance between her and Remzi to show him that she doesn’t care about him. He was just another person in her life for her to play with, but things had shifted. She wanted to be close to him as well and screw pretending. She walked towards Remzi, carefully stepping into the circle to take a seat alongside him. There would have been a time when she would have argued with him, telling him there was no way she was going to sit on a dirty warehouse floor in her favourite jeans, but none of that mattered. Fuck the dirt and fuck the jeans. As she sat down she glanced over at him with a warm smile on her face. More genuine than the one she flashed Cassie a few seconds ago. Her lips parted as she was about to tell him she was here for him no matter the outcome, but she couldn’t bring herself to say it. Instead she reached over, took his hand and gave it a light squeeze before turning her attention to Raik’s body. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE SMILED AT RAIK, THOUGH IT SEEMED INAPPROPRIATE to take gratitude from a dead man she hadn’t yet brought back. “‘Course.” She said lightly, eyes flicking to the figure that appeared… hey!
He spoke before she could, though Cassie’s face was full of recognition. Dark brows raised, a half-smile pulling up the edges of her lips. It seemed like the wrong place to be so happy, but she wasn’t expecting someone she knew. And, well, she wasn’t exactly happy. Just surprised. Leah was rude, reacting sharply at the vampire’s comment (she assumed he was Raik’s brother and also the not-boyfriend). Cassie flashed her a frown before awkwardly trying to bring some lightness back to the exchange, “‘Parently not. Wish it was under slightly better circumstances this time, but…” Her smile turned sad, offering a weak shrug to the vampire.
“And yeah, I’m sure they’re fine.” She echoed Leah as he approached, leaning forward to reach for them. “It’s okay to come into the circle. Actually, I need you in here. Sit on the other end of him,” Cassie pointed, watching Remzi obey. Eventually, he was close enough to hand her the items he’d brought, and she flipped through them quickly before putting them in the centre of the coloured candles. It wasn’t her place to judge what they meant to Raik or his brother, so she had to assume they’d work just fine. Remzi’s participation was the most crucial part of the recipe anyway.
“Thank you,” She said to Leah, a little late, nodding as the blonde sat next to Remzi. “For your, uh, discretion, I mean. I don’t think I’m supposed to do this stuff, either, but Raik’s human, right? So… it should be okay.” Just like with Kacee, though he had the potential to become a wolf like his brother.
Cassie’s attention went to Raik next, motioning to the spot between her and Remzi, just in front of his body. “Raik, if you can sit there. Please stay inside the circle at all times. When you feel a pulling sensation, don’t fight it. Just follow it.” She’d felt it firsthand; she knew all of the feelings flooding through Raik right now, and she hoped she could do this as quickly (and effectively) as possible.
Remzi looked a little surprised, but she supposed he was the only one who couldn’t see his brother, so she ignored it, talking before he could. “Remzi, I need you to put a hand on Raik━over the sheet is fine. Keep your other hand joined with Leah’s, and Leah, you take mine. Remzi and Raik, you both need to focus the most.” Cassie sucked in a shaky breath, blew it out slowly, and gave the same instruction as she had with Kace. It worked that time, didn’t it? “Everyone should close their eyes and focus on a white light coming down and blanketing the circle, pushing out any darkness, anything impure. When I go through the elements, imagine each of their assigned colours filling the circle and Raik, along with any happy memories you have that might be associated with that element. Raik, you do the same, but for yourself. It’s really important that we all focus, okay? Even you, Leah. Just imagine that white light if nothing else.”
She waved a hand in the air, lighting all the white candles that enveloped them in the circle. The same hand fell to take Leah’s, and her other palm pressed lightly to the top of Raik’s head. Cassie tried not to flinch, but he was so cold, forcing the witch to squeeze her eyes shut like it would make any of this easier.
Eventually, Cassie began invoking the elements. The dark green candle burst to life as soon as she called on Earth, asking for strength and stability. Water, her element, came next with its deep blue colour, and she could almost feel it washing over her skin━she asked it to cleanse their circle and their path to completion. Fire, a red candle, to burn away impurities and impassion their concentration. Air, a lighter blue, almost white candle, to bring clarity of the mind for a successful ritual. Finally, Cassie called for spirit. This was always the most nerve-wracking part.
“Ancestors,” She began stronger than she had the last time, “I gave my life to be made closer to you, and I hope that allows you to understand my reasonings for another ritual like this. Raik was a human, taken before it was his time, though he wasn’t sacrificed for the same purpose I was.” Both were a little fucked up, but she wasn’t about to tell the Ancestors that. “I ask for strength and guidance now as I return his spirit to his body. I believe he deserves another chance, and I’m confident all of you would agree.” She felt the hairs on her arms stand, goosebumps covering her skin, and smiled softly. The purple candle lit, blazing hard and strong━she could feel it more than anything, and knew that the ancestors were with her.
Cassie felt the telltale sign of her energy depleting as she began reciting the Latin incantation, growing louder the further she got into the spell. It built heavily, like a weight pressing down on the circle, and then rushed like a gust of wind towards Raik’s body. The pressure dissipated all at once, and she pulled in a breath, eyes opening and snapping to Raik’s body. “Nobody leave the circle.” She said quickly, “I have to close it and then we can leave. No matter what happens, wait ‘til I close it. Don’t drop your hands.”

It was uncomfortable standing in a place where not only one but two people could actually see him. It felt as though he was already back on their side, until Remzi showed up and didn’t acknowledge him. His eyes settled on his brother as he walked through the warehouse, complaining that Raik’s body was lying on the floor. A small smile twitched on his face as he watched Remzi interact with the ‘Daylight ring chick.’ knowing if he could be seen, Raik would mutter to his brother that he should maybe address Cassie more politely, rather than calling her a chick. He edged towards Remzi to see what personal belongings his brother had decided to bring. Raik knew Remzi would have been running around that morning trying to find something personal, probably swearing a thousand times whilst rummaging through their belongings. At first he expected Remzi to pull out Raik’s socks or maybe even a pair of boxers, but he knew his brother would pull through in the end and find something meaningful. However he never expected Remzi to dig out the photo of Katie. He closed his eyes for a moment, tears stinging his eyes as he spotted the photograph. As they flickered back open he brought his hand up, resting it on his bare chest where his Nazar once lay. He removed it and tossed it aside not long after Remzi killed Katie. Filled with rage and wanted nothing to remind him of his sibling. The necklace was there to protect him from evil yet it wasn’t protecting him against Remzi. A person who had succumbed to evil. It should be okay. Cassie’s words didn’t fill him with confidence, but this was his only option. “Yeah I’m human.” Clinging onto that title with all his strength. He had no desire to be pulled into their world, which was filled with death. He headed over to where Cassie had told him to stand, trying not to glance down at his body but it was impossible not to look. He’d seen himself in the mirror a million times before but this was different. It didn’t look like him, at all. He pulled his attention away from himself and back towards everyone else, mainly Remzi and Leah. A small frown on his face as Leah grabbed hold of Remzi’s hand. She’d spent months trying to help the brothers, but he still didn’t like her. It didn’t matter anyway as Alya would soon be walking down the aisle with Remzi, leaving Leah in the past. Leah wasn’t good enough for Remzi, yet Remzi wasn’t good enough for Alya and Raik couldn’t decide which situation was the better of the two. He joined everyone sitting on the floor, closing his eyes as instructed. He cleared his head as best he could, listening to Cassie’s voice. Elements and memories. His mind raced through all his happy memories and all of them were with Remzi. For every one bad moment he had with his brother there were ten more happy moments to outweigh the bad. He tried to associate them with the elements, reminding himself to stay calm the whole time. It was difficult to keep his eyes screwed shut as he wanted to have just a little tiny peek to see what was happening out there. All he knew was he was yet to be returned to his body. He was still sitting on the concrete, listening to Cassie talk in Latin, at least that’s what it sounded like. Then he felt the wind brush against his face, then the pull Cassie spoke about, like two magnets being forced together. Raik didn’t fight the sensation either. Dying felt different. A black hole swallowed him instantly and the next minute he was standing in the corner of the hotel room wondering what the hell had happened. Maybe if he wasn’t completely out of it when he died he would have felt the same pull towards death that he was feeling towards life. He was no longer sitting on the floor with his eyes closed, but his body was now pressed against the floor causing him to gasp, oxygen filling his lungs as his eyes flickered open. Immediately he became aware of how cold his body was but the atmosphere surrounding him was a lot warmer than limbo. Raik sat up, pulling the sheet from his body before he pressed his right hand against his throat. The cut was gone. Then his gaze fell on Remzi, unable to find the words to say anything. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ EVEN DURING SOMETHING LIKE THIS, LEAH WAS still a bitch. He shouldn’t have expected anything different, what with sarcasm bleeding from her as though he’d ripped open her throat (again), but it still hurt. Just a tiny zing to his otherwise lifeless being, which it was in more ways than one, especially with Raik gone.
But she settled in beside him, a hand in his, and it was okay again. They forgave each other like that, offering little jabs, getting riled up, and then ultimately letting it go. He supposed there wasn’t anything better he could’ve asked for, though a lot of people (namely Raik) found their relationship concerning. But she was just like him, and he wasn’t gonna let her go.
He tensed when Cassie started talking again, clearly addressing Raik by name. Remzi followed her eyeline, squeezing Leah’s hand, but he found nothing. Blue eyes sought the empty air frantically, trying to spot Raik standing there, or sitting, but it seemed he wasn’t allowed to see him yet. He frowned, following Cassie’s direction and curling his free hand around Raik’s leg lightly, resting over the sheet. He was freezing, but Remzi tried not to flinch at the feeling, and squeezed Leah again. Fuck.
Okay. White light. Like a disco ball descending in the middle of the circle, he pictured it blasting away any shadows, and frantically plucked at his memory for happy memories. Everything seemed so fucking shitty lately, his head was full of all the stuff he’d done wrong, and he wondered if there was anything happy at all.
As Cassie went on, it got a little easier, like he was freeing a dam in his mind and allowing it all to pour out. Earth came first, and he thought of beating up that kid for his skateboard, then bringing it home, demanding Raik go out to learn with him. Raik was careful, but Remzi went full force, skinning his knees so bad he thought the asphalt would be permanently embedded in his body. He bled literally everywhere, and almost knocked his teeth out when he went flying after rolling over a sidewalk crack, but he kept trying.
Water was next. He struggled for a minute, then recalled that trip to the local pool as a family. It was the lowest-class fucking setup, but he remembered loving it there. Their mom sat in the shade with their dad, all covered up and shouting at the boys while Remzi tried to drown Raik in the pool. It was a little morbid given the circumstances, but it still brought a smile to his face━they were having fun, laughing, and Remzi didn’t mean it. He let Raik hold him under a few times, too, and that wasn’t all they did that day.
Fire. Fire, fire, fire. Complete opposite. Oh shit━he imagined the time they’d run into the street on a particularly sunny Saturday, no more than ten years old, each donning a magnifying glass. They were from the dollar store, made of cheap plastic, but he remembered loving them. Raik inspected bugs and plants while Remzi tried to set a small pile of leaves on fire, promising Raik that they’d be careful, though he had no intention of keeping that promise. Eventually, it started to smoke, and a flame blazed from the leaves before Raik could stomp it out. Remzi remembered laughing for hours at the expression on Raik’s face, absolutely loving the fact that he’d succeeded.
Finally, there was air, and Remzi took a minute to think about it. Did Raik getting on a plane count? He remembered it being a windy ass day, and their mom was fretting about it, all the while, Remzi pretended he wasn’t worried━wasn’t holding back his emotions. He hadn’t been there when the plane took off, but he could imagine it catching the air and lifting, taking his brother away to the military. Away from home.
Ah, shit. There was another element for witches, apparently. He didn’t know what the fuck he was supposed to think about for spirit, but his brain took its own meaning. It wasn’t so much an actual memory as it was just thinking about Raik. How much better he was on the inside than Remzi, how the people in his life actually liked being around him; he never made their parents worry or get upset, not about big things. He was the perfect son, and Remzi had stolen him from them. That was on him.
Thankfully, there wasn’t another fuckin’ surprise element. Remzi didn’t know how much more he could take of this, his damn eyes burned, and more tears were wetting his cheeks than he’d ever admit to.
He felt Raik shift under him. Remzi’s eyes snapped open, trained on his brother as he… he fucking sat up! He was alive! A mix of excitement and relief washed over his features, and he almost dropped Leah’s hand before Cassie’s words permeated. He frowned for a second, and lightly squeezed Raik’s leg. “Abi,” He choked, “Seni çok özledim.”
His gaze flashed to Cassie, and she seemed to do everything in reverse, though it was much quicker this time. Remzi hadn’t noticed the pressure in the circle until it was gone, as though it was holding him there, pinning each of them into place. Cassie dropped her hold on Leah and Raik, and Remzi watched as she nudged at the blood seeping from her nose.
All he wanted was to go to his brother, but he was transfixed by it, letting it call to him, change his face. Cassie met his eyes, looking frozen and scared, but Remzi still wished for Raik. He thought of the skateboard, the pool, the magnifying glass, the flight. How Raik was taken so easily, and how bad it hurt to lose him each time.
Finally, he managed to tear his focus from Cassie’s crimson upper lip, finding what was most important to him. His brother. Alive. Fucking breathing again. Remzi rushed towards him, shifting against the rough flooring of the warehouse, eventually able to throw his arms around Raik and haul him in for the tightest hug possible.

Raik knew his brother was sorry for everything that happened. He never meant to become a vampire, he never meant to kill Katie, he never meant to drag Raik into Leah’s drama with her half-brother. That was the problem with his brother though. He never stepped back to think about how his actions were going to affect everyone around him. Raik had spent his entire life defending Remzi, even when he royally fucked up and he knew he would never stop defending his brother, no matter how angry he was at him. The anger would subside over time and simply fade away into nothing. Yes, one of the reasons he was sitting in a circle with a witch bringing him back to life was because Remzi didn’t think about what he was doing, but he’d been punished for this. He’d spent months without his older brother under the assumption he would never see Raik again. He couldn’t even begin to imagine the pain Remzi was going through because the thought of losing Remzi filled him with dread. His brother, his best friend, his right-hand man. His everything. Every now and then he would wonder about what Remzi was thinking about. Were they imagining the same memories? A smile twitched on his face as he recalled their childhood. Earth was easy. His mind flooded with the memory of when he and Remzi would make mud pies for their mom, with sticks, worms and whatever else they found lying in the garden. She never appreciated the mud pies and would scream whenever one of them ran through the house, dirt scattering all over the floor with the odd worm falling out. When it came to water he struggled for a second. Sea? No, they never went on a beach holiday. There was that time their mom flooded the bathroom because Remzi had jammed crayons down the drain. Raik stood next to his brother handing him the crayons. The next time his mom used the sink she left the tap running for a few minutes and when she returned the sink had overflowed. Fire, hot, warmth. Remzi was always setting fire to shit when they were kids so it was hard to pinpoint an exact memory. Then he remembered when the pair first arrived in LA. The sun was blazing and the brothers headed straight to the beach. The whole day Raik was making comments about Remzi’s pale skin, calling him a fake Turk. Air was the most difficult but then a memory popped into his mind. It was the first memory without Remzi, but with Katie. Senior prom his circle of friends hired a limousine to drive them through the city on their way to the party. Katie opened the sunroof, sticking her head through the hole before forcing Raik to join her. The wind swept through their hair as they whizzed along the highway, although his eyes were on Katie rather than the city lights ahead because he was realising he was in love with her. Fuck, how many elements was Cassie going to run through? His mind was drawing a complete blank on spirit. The only thing he could imagine was his spirit sinking back into his body and him coming back to life. Then it happened for real. He was alive. Remzi spoke, squeezing his leg slightly as sensation flooded his limbs. Abi. It took him a few seconds to register what was happening. He was sitting up, alive and his brother's arms were wrapped around him, drawing him in for a tight hug. Raik couldn’t hold back the emotions any longer. Tears began to seep from his eyes as he placed his arms around Remzi. Things weren’t okay between the pair, but he’d missed his brother so much that it physically hurt him. He’d spent months on the other side longing to hug Remzi. “Ben de seni özledim.” Apologies and forgiveness could wait a little longer. For now, Raik was ecstatic to be alive and holding his brother again. REMZI DURMAZ Translation: I have missed you too - the end
