Considering he was Canadian the word ‘sorry’ didn’t slip out of his mouth with ease, rather he slowed the word, telling himself he had nothing to apologise for. It had been a week or so since Phoebe came round and the three splinted off from one another. It wasn’t hard to avoid Teddy either given Lawrence’s sleep schedule was the complete opposite of his best friends (thank you, Penny). The dust had settled a little and his anger had subsided by now, leaving him with the realisation he had to speak to his friend and offer an apology for losing his cool. There was no in between sometimes when it came to his temper. Whilst a human may have felt pissed at the situation, he felt rage. The dial was constantly jammed at maximum and he hated it so much. If he was in his own apartment that afternoon he would have slammed his bedroom door until the wood splintered and the door cracked, but this wasn’t his property to destroy with his anger. Looking back he couldn’t pinpoint what tipped him over the edge. He got caught up with the tension that was growing in the room until it finally snapped. Until Lawrence finally snapped. If the same situation played out back when he was a human he would have retreated to the corner of the room, offering no words whilst Teddy and Phoebe bickered. Phoebe would have still acted the same though, but maybe less bold. Sometimes it felt as if Phoebe was exactly the same person as before, but he wasn’t. The blood that filled his veins had somehow altered the person he was. The vampires back in New Orleans suggested that whoever he was now was just someone who was buried beneath his human self. Nonetheless, it didn’t mean Teddy deserved to feel the backlash of that. Each time he went to leave his room to speak to Teddy he would retreat a little, telling himself Teddy added fuel to the fire when he called Phoebe a liar and claimed he was forced to spend time with her. This wasn’t the picture he had painted in his head when he reunited with Phoebe. He pictured the three of them being close. He wanted Phoebe and Teddy to like each other, but they’d both gone and fucked it. His eyes flickered open just after midday. He could hear someone banging around the kitchen, but no sign of a child running around too. With a heavy sigh, he hauled himself out of bed. Time to clear the air with Teddy. He pulled his bedroom door open, leaving it open as he shuffled down the corridor. He cleared his throat once he approached the kitchen, peering in at Teddy. “Hey.” He spoke quietly, leaning against the wall. “I’m sorry about Phoebe… and I’m sorry I got so angry… I can’t control my emotions sometimes.” Especially in a room with two people he loved the most, yet hated one another and pushed the blame on him for bumping into each other, “She knows not to come around again.” The two didn’t want to make Teddy feel uncomfortable in his own apartment and there were plenty of places in Mystic Falls for the pair to meet. If absolutely necessary he could venture out to the student dorms, but he’d never been a fan of those dorms. TEDDY AARONSON

━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY TRIED TO SETTLE AFTER HIS RUN-IN with Phoebe. The second one, the one in his home with his child in the vicinity. The one that had Lawrence snapping as if this was Teddy’s fault, and effectively ignoring him for a week. Teddy wasn’t one to hold a grudge, not for something so minuscule in the grand scheme of things, but every time he tried to speak to Lawrence about it, his best friend was unavailable. Either asleep or at work, there seemed to be no in-between time. Perhaps that was on purpose.
Teddy didn’t like living with so much tension between himself and the people he shared a home with. He’d done this once in his life, when his mother was desperate for a non-siphoner, female heir and hounded him and Octavia day after day. Of course, the issue with Lawrence wasn’t quite to that extent, but it still came to mind whenever Teddy worried (which was often).
It wasn’t his fault that his best friend’s sister turned up when he needed someone, nor was it his fault that she didn’t seem to have internal guidance on when to be respectful. But it wasn’t Lawrence’s fault, either.
If Teddy knew anything, it was that you couldn’t pick your family.
Still, it would be easier to reconcile if Lawrence was around. Even now, while Julian was at school and Teddy was home prepping dinner, Lawrence was in his bedroom sleeping. This would’ve been the perfect time, but Teddy didn’t want to disturb him━all that would do was make the situation worse.
Trying to follow this recipe, Teddy scrunched his face while he read it, sticking the raw chicken into a bowl of beaten eggs. It went into the breadcrumb bowl next, then back to the eggs and back again. A signal piece was laid on the parchment paper-covered pan and Teddy’s fingers were already coated. He sighed, trying to pull off the little clumps gathered at the ends of his fingers. A bead of sweat pooled at his hairline and, without thinking, he reached up to wipe it away and thread his fingers through his hair. Not an inch in and he froze, making a quiet sound of disgust before sticking his hands in the sink. Teddy leaned over, trying to use his now-clean hands to wash the eggy breadcrumbs from his curls.
‘Hey.’
Teddy jumped at that, quickly (and blindly) trying to get the rest out. He stood up, shut off the water and turned, though his hairline was incredibly damp. Despite this━and the uncomfortable feeling of liquid pooled there, way worse than the sweat that’d started it all━he smiled politely. “Hey. Listen, it’s━it’s okay, Lawrence. I understand.” It wasn’t, not really, not with a child around, but he did understand, and he wouldn’t fault Lawrence for that. The week-long break gave Teddy time to reflect and allow all the fresh emotions to fade.
He wished he could tell Lawrence that it was good Phoebe wouldn’t come over anymore, or that she would finally respect some boundaries, but the words only had Teddy feeling guilty. He wasn’t sure why━Phoebe wasn’t a person who provoked sympathy━but he loved his best friend, and she was Lawrence’s sister. And this was his home, too, even if Teddy sometimes felt like he had more ownership over it.
“No, it’s…” Teddy sighed, “It’s okay. She’s your sister. If I can ask that it’s not when I’m around, then that should be fine. Just let me know when she’s coming over.” He nodded, then paused, adding, “And… Julian, too. I’ve always been cautious of who he gets introduced to, and I wouldn’t want him to expect that she’d be a constant figure in his life.” That wasn’t rude, was it? Perhaps Lawrence wouldn’t get it━he wasn’t a dad, after all━but Teddy had no other way of explaining. Julian was (and always would be) his first priority. It was bad enough that he’d already asked half a dozen times to show his Legos to ‘Auntie Phoebe.’

When Lawrence first met Teddy he had no idea he would turn out to be such a sensitive and caring person. He met someone who slaughtered a group of witches and warlocks without a second thought and for good reason too. Teddy would lay his life on the line to protect his son. If given the chance he would have told Teddy to steer clear of his sister in the first place. There was zero compatibility there. Teddy was looking for a lifelong partner who he could grow old with and marry. Phoebe was looking for a night of fun, which turned his stomach. Anything beyond that was considered a bit too full on for her. Their intentions were on the opposite end of the scale, but unfortunately, Phoebe had lured Teddy in for her night of fun before tossing him out again. Phoebe had explained to Lawrence why she kept all men at arms length, but she didn’t bother explaining that to Teddy. The smell of raw chicken mixed in with beaten eggs hit him as soon as he left his bedroom and it wasn’t pleasant. Lawrence scrunched up his nose a little as he headed towards the kitchen, but he’d rather that than the smell of fresh blood. There were a few dry droplets of blood on the clothes that were currently screwed up on his bedroom floor. Hannya’s blood, as always. She never cared whether it was messy or clean. A smile formed on his face as Teddy spun around, his curls stuck to his forehead. “Sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” Forgetting that it wasn’t both of them that had supernatural hearing. The shuffling along the corridor obviously went unheard over the sound of running water. “It wasn’t… things got a little heated.” Hopefully Julian had been so preoccupied with his lego that he didn’t hear the three bickering in the living room like school children. Lawrence was ready to put the unnecessary drama behind him. The deemed had been done and that was that. He wasn’t about to force Teddy to be friends with Phoebe because it was so clear he wasn’t a fan of her. Admittedly, Lawrence probably would have felt the same way if a girl did the same to him. Hurt and ghosted (a new phrase that had been thrown around recently). He couldn’t help but frown slightly at his friend’s comment. Phoebe was a constant figure in his life, but somehow wasn’t going to be a constant figure in Teddy’s life or even Julian’s. Keeping the two apart for the next few decades would be exhausting, but maybe in a wonderful turn of events, bygones would be bygones. “Honest, it’s fine. It’s probably easier for everyone if she doesn’t come around here again.” In other words, it was easier for Teddy. He paused for a moment, drawing his bottom lip between his teeth as he pondered. “Phoebe’s last boyfriend died and she blames herself for it… she says she killed him and everything but…” This wasn’t his secret to share, but he needed to tell Teddy. It would hopefully shed a bit of light on the situation. “Anyway. That’s why she’s so against relationships… she doesn’t wanna lose someone again.” TEDDY AARONSON

━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY WAS GLAD THAT LAWRENCE KNEW IT wasn’t actually alright. He’d only said that because he no longer wanted to fight with his best friend and, honestly, how could he keep butting heads with Lawrence? It wasn’t his fault. Phoebe wasn’t here apologizing, but Lawrence was, which meant something. He wondered how two siblings could be so different, but supposed the proof was demonstrated between himself and his own sisters. Perhaps some of them were similar in personality, but for the rest of it? They hadn’t been persecuted by their mom as Teddy had, so he gave them a pass for still believing her, but… by the end? Were their minds so polluted that they really couldn’t see the truth?
He supposed covens (and cults, a word he’d learned on the Outside) wouldn’t exist if people’s minds couldn’t be manipulated. He didn't think it’d gone so far with Phoebe, especially not after a hundred years out of there. She was just different from Lawrence, and Teddy couldn’t fault him for how his sister turned out, just as he hoped nobody would blame him for his mother’s behaviour.
Smiling lightly, Teddy nodded━it would be easier. This was Lawrence’s home, too, but if he never had to worry about Phoebe crossing that boundary again? Well, he’d take that option━especially since Lawrence was the one offering it. “Perhaps. I’m glad we can agree.” Instead of exploding into another argument. Teddy half-turned, switching on the sink again.
He managed to clean his hands and begin to rinse his hair again when Lawrence’s words gave him pause. Teddy froze, actually, and slowly stood up again, shutting off the faucet. Without speaking, he allowed the revelation to digest for a moment, and moved to find a dry tea towel. Teddy patted his forehead and the front of his hair where it was pretty much drenched.
Teddy had no idea Phoebe had been through something like that. Actually, Teddy had no idea Phoebe was capable of feelings whatsoever. He could, however, relate to losing a partner, especially when it was… your fault. The guilt hadn’t lingered to make him bitter, but that was just how Teddy handled it, and he had someone else to care for. If he didn’t have Julian to force him out of wallowing in self-pity, plus an extra hundred years (give or take) to sit in his grief, he could’ve just as easily turned out the same way Phoebe had. Callous, cold, pretending nothing affected you, using people before they could hurt you first. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t have the same thoughts following Octavia’s death━and even still sometimes thought he’d never find love again. Sometimes Teddy wondered if he even wanted to.
“Well,” Teddy sighed, leaning back against the counter with the towel in his hands, “I didn’t know that. That changes things.” It went without saying, but still. “I can’t say I’ve ever wanted to use someone after what happened to Octavia, but I can still understand what might drive her to do so. Thanks for letting me know.” Did that mean he wanted her around now? No, not really, but it definitely softened Teddy to Phoebe’s plight.
“I wish this all could’ve ended up differently.” Teddy half-smiled sadly at Lawrence, knowing he felt the same way. It was easy to picture Lawrence reuniting with his sister and then bringing her around, allowing the three of them to become friends but, unfortunately, it didn’t go that way━and that wasn’t his or Lawrence’s fault. “But I’m glad we’ve worked it out.” And that’s all that mattered to him━coming out of this with their friendship still intact.
Finally, Teddy turned back to the breaded chicken, “I’m trying this new recipe for dinner tonight; I think it’s called…” Teddy squinted at the recipe card he had propped up to follow. “Chicken Parm-e-san. It sounds strange, but it’s supposed to be popular. Have you ever tried it?” He asked, flashing Lawrence an excited grin.

Their friendship was back on track again after another minor hiccup. The first time was his fault after the whole drama with Hannya but this time there was shared blame (in his mind) but whatever. It was done with. He wasn’t necessarily agreeing with Teddy, but again, it was done. As soon as the words spilled out of his mouth he felt a pang of guilt. He shouldn’t have told Teddy about what Phoebe had told him, but it was too late now. He just wanted his friend to understand why his sister was standoffish with him and sometimes cold hearted. That wasn’t the real Phoebe. There was someone much warmer and loving lying beneath the surface, you just needed to scratch away at it for a while before you saw the person Lawrence loved unconditionally. Teddy had just completely misunderstood his sister and for good reason. She hadn’t done herself any favors with the way she’d acted. He could accept that Phoebe had used Teddy for a good time, but did it stretch anything beyond that? But there was a surge of relief when Teddy said it changed things. He didn’t want Teddy to dislike Phoebe forever, hopefully this would soften the dislike and shed light on the situation. “People react differently to things like that.” He said with a shrug. Teddy withdrew himself from love and Phoebe grew prickly. He nodded slowly in response to Teddy's comment, “Me too.” But the pair had been careless enough to jump into bed together and ruin any potential future friendship. Lawrence’s eye moved past Teddy and onto the breaded chicken that was sitting on the side. He broke into a warm laugh, “Course I’ve had Chicken Parmesan… I’m guessing you haven’t?” What the fuck were they feeding Teddy in the cult? Beans and rice? He joined Teddy at the counter side. “I can try and help but y’know what I’m like in the kitchen.” Like a bull in a china shop, but whatever, Teddy had the recipe laid out in front of them. How hard could it be? TEDDY AARONSON - the end! [/quote]
