Vampires were pretty much at the top of the food chain. They were the apex predators. There weren't many that were above them, bar the Mikaelsons and a werewolf on a full moon. At least that is what he was told by his sire. According to him vampires were pretty much untouchable, which could explain Hector's sky high confidence which sometimes bordered on arrogance. With each passing year he crept even closer to the top of that food chain as the baby vampires lingered beneath him. He had it all. He always kept an ear to the ground, wanting to know everything that was going on in Mystic Falls, so he wasn’t pleased when he found out there was a new species roaming around town. Half vampire, half werewolf, with a bite that was fatal. However, they could still be killed with a stake through the heart, unlike Lana. There was no daylight ring on her finger, she went into a frenzy over vampire blood and a stake through the heart did nothing but render her unconscious for a while. She was vague on what happened before Lawrence found her in the woods, but Hector knew whatever she was, it was unnatural. He found it impossible to believe that vampires would evolve into whatever Lana was, leaving him with the impression she was manmade. Created by someone who was looking to bring vampires down. Slowly other beings were creeping above him in the invisible food chain. He showed no mercy after Lana latched her teeth onto his neck. It was like prying a dog’s teeth from around its favourite chew toy, but eventually he managed to detach her from him. There was zero hesitation when he ran the wooden leg from the chair through her heart. She was a danger, not only to herself but to his club. Lawrence had brought her there, showed her the way and she was a loose end that needed tying up. An argument erupted between Lawrence and Hector thereafter. Of course Lawrence wanted to help her, but Hector wanted her dead. It didn’t go to plan though. By some miracle, she had been granted a third lease of life leaving Hector feeling displeased. Maybe someone was watching over Lana, granting her these miracles because he agreed to try and help her with these weird cravings. He hadn’t seen her for a while though, leaving him with the impression she had skipped town, which he was somewhat happy about. It was his second time in the gambling club, but he wasn’t there to throw chips down on the table this time. He just needed a drink and some time away from the bar. Hector stepped inside, flashing a forced smile at the bouncer near the door. Hopefully the staff heeded his suggestion last time when he recommended getting some better liquor, but as he drew closer to the bar to observe the bottles it didn’t seem like they had. That once forced smile was replaced with a genuine one when he spotted Pierre sitting at the bar, “Good evening.” He gave Pierre a light tap on the back before sliding onto the seat next to his friend, “How’ve you been? Everything okay with your son?” He asked as he settled into the seat. They weren’t as comfortable as his seats at the bar. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ A CERTAIN KIND OF NOSTALGIA CAME WITH returning to casinos. Poker tables, in general, brought up fond memories, though Pierre missed the days when he could read minds and rob his opponents blind. They didn’t like it very much, but Pierre certainly enjoyed it.
For now, he mainly relied on skill. And, because he was a vampire and businessman, he had a multitude of cash to spend on the game. It wasn’t an addiction, just a favourite pastime. A hobby, almost━one he’d been doing for more than a hundred years.
It also helped to focus on something other than Baxter being part kitsune and part vampire, along with the fact that his parents’ side profession was doing exactly that━altering people. They were so sure that Mal was behind this━who the hell else could it be? Who else could take their son, change him and wipe his memories? It didn’t matter that Mal had likely changed a hundred other people on his path with this other group; he’d gone after their son, and they wouldn’t stand for it.
Pierre and Lena were building their plan for retaliation. First up was to find Mal, and then Pierre had many wild ideas of how to exact their revenge. Most of which Lena would (or already had) turn down, claiming they were too difficult and “out-there.” He’d heard it all his life, though Lena was the only person he listened to.
Pierre took a seat at the bar and sipped his rum, taking a break from the tables for a while. It wasn’t long before his solitude was interrupted, a light clap on the back making him turn to raise his brows at Hector. For a second, he’d thought it would be Mal coming to corner him in this place, and, just for that moment, Pierre had been ready to start spitting insults at him. Instead, the Frenchman soothed his ruffled feathers with another drink, then grinned at his old friend, reaching out to pat his arm. “Great to see you again, Hector,” And he meant it. The last time had been when Hector returned their son to them━when he’d helped immensely. Pierre could kiss him again.
“Oui, oui,” He answered automatically, nodding, but then slowly came to a halt. Pierre shook his head and frowned, “Ah, non. Somezing is wrong with our boy,” He sighed, “‘E’s… don’t mistake my answer, I am happy we have ‘im back, but…” Lowering his voice, Pierre took a few nervous glances at their surroundings before leaning in. “... Baxter ‘as been changed. By an old friend, we presume. He was once a kitsune, now ‘e seems to be… a mixture of zat and a vampire.” Leaning back, Pierre stared down into his glass with a deep frown. “I don’t know how dzis is possible. ‘E is like a… hundred-year-old new vampire.” Pierre was confident Hector would understand how awful that was━they’d both gone through it, and control had come slow, with a hundred trials and failings along the way.

There was a time when Hector was convinced Pierre had attached some weird tracking device to him because every corner he turned the little French Canadian man was there. A huge grin on his face, which touched his ears as he’d thrown his arms around Hector, pulling him for a hug that was a little too tight at times. Next minute Pierre was in Mystic Falls and the minute after that his kid was asking Hector if he could borrow his phone, which earned him another rib-crushing hug with a kiss. Truthfully, he didn’t expect to find Pierre sitting at the bar, drinking alone. He thought the man would have been at home with his son. Their little family has reunited. One piece of positive news in a town where so much bad happened, some of which Hector personally contributed to, but that was different. He didn’t give a shit about ninety percent of the locals, but he did give a shit about Pierre and his son. He chose to live the life of a bachelor to the point he didn’t even go on dates with women or give them his number, but as he watched Pierre and his wife embrace their son there was the tiniest twinge of envy. It was a life he pictured with Evelyn and a life he had been actively avoiding since she died. It was one of the few times he hated being a vampire because the heartbreak was crushingly painful, so much so that he refused to feel anything like that again. He listened intently to Pierre, leaning in slightly as his friend did so to whisper that their son had been changed. Hector returned to his normal position, a frown just as deep as Pierre’s on his face. “So… he’s like one of those hybrids?” He wasn’t all that familiar with kitsunes, only picking up information Pierre had told him over the years, “This friend of yours, did he turn Baxter?” His eyes flicked up as the bartender appeared in front of them. Hector gave them a tight smile, “Double rum and coke.” Usually he would have spent a few minutes examining the offer of spirits behind the bar before pointing out exactly what he wanted, but he was far more interested in Pierre’s story. He waited for the bartender to walk off towards the other end of the bar before he turned his attention back to Pierre, lowering his voice slightly as he spoke, “I met this girl a few months back. A vampire. Someone brought her into the bar, found her out in the woods ripping a man apart… long story short she tried to bite me so I drove a…” He spotted the bartender wandering back towards the two with Hector’s drink in hand. “Cheers. I’ll start a tab.” He reached into his wallet, pulling out his credit card before handing it over to the woman. Again, he waited for her to walk off. “So I drove a wooden stake through her heart, but it didn’t even kill her… and she didn’t have a daylight ring on her finger. There’s something unnatural about her.” He reached out for his drink, taking a small sip, immediately regretting not pointing out exactly what rum he wanted. The woman had clearly reached for the cheap stuff, leaving a burning sensation as it travelled down his throat. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ A HYBRID? PIERRE FROWNED AT THE WORD, he didn’t think they were planning on calling them hybrids, but he supposed that’s what they were. Pierre shrugged noncommittally, dark eyes studying the liquid in his glass. “Oui, we believe so,” He sighed, watching the bartender leave before he continued, “Dzough, ‘e does not turn zem as you and I were turned. Dzey are operated on, like science projects. Baxter seems to be just as much a kitsune as ‘e is a vampire.” Pierre shook his head.
The worst part about this was the jealousy. How did Mal manage to figure it out? Why was he successful without them? The rest of the team was just as valuable as he was, and it was irritating to think about a group that faired better. Pierre hoped Mal’s new group treated him like he had them. Abandoned when things got tough.
Pierre listened to Hector’s story with intense focus, brows drawn together as he memorized each exchanged fact. His eyes skittered to the bartender as she interrupted them, offering a polite, pressed smile until Hector could resume.
His eyes blew wide as his friend finished, shaking his head until his gaze settled on the bar. He couldn’t believe it. “C'est incroyable,” Pierre sighed, though he clearly didn’t mean it positively. “‘E managed it. Mixing species zat cannot be mixed, super-charged vampires. Baxter ‘as been sensitive to sunlight, so perhaps dzat’s zee difference between pure vampires and mixes. Hybrids, as you said.” Pierre motioned to Hector, and then puffed out another breath, taking a long drink.
Once it was set on the bar again, he leaned forward, narrowing his eyes as they got that look in them again. “You know, we were on the verge of creating dzings like zis. We could ‘ave been zee first, comprendre? Dzen ‘e turned me into a vampire and left us.” Pierre made a sound of disgust, “‘E will not see us coming for him zis time. Mal will suffer for ‘urting my family, he will━” He’d started to increase the speed and intensity as his sentence when on, but then Pierre suddenly stopped, brows raising, eyes twinkling.
“Would you like in on dzis, Hector? Perhaps altering them ourselves will help us prepare…” Pierre trailed off, brows furrowing, “Did you evade dzis mutant vampire, or did she manage to slip away? Did anyzing hurt her?”

As soon as Pierre mentioned the word operate Hector’s face twisted into disgust. He was expecting something a little less sinister. He expected Baxter to have been turned under normal circumstances. Fed blood, had his neck snapped then fed human blood. “Who the bloody hell is operating on supernaturals?” There were so many questions running through his head. He had been called twisted by people in the past, but this was the true definition of twisted. No wonder Lana was so on edge when she came into the bar if she’d just jumped off an operating table. He hated that there was a small part of him wanting in on this scheme. If someone was out there creating a whole new breed of supernaturals with some groundbreaking experiments Hector wanted his name stamped somewhere. Just something to add to his ever-growing list of achievements, but his moral compass was tipping him towards staying in the right lane, for Pierre’s sake. This person had taken their son and changed him into a bloodthirsty creature. Hector couldn’t even begin to imagine the heartbreak Pierre and his wife were going through. If he was anything compared to Lana his cravings were strong. “Something stronger than us?” Stronger than Hector? There weren’t many vampires that could overpower him and he didn’t like there were rookie vampires out there with the same strength as him. Lana wasn’t easy to bring down. Hector’s brows shot up for an instant as Pierre mentioned he was also involved in these experiments at some point but he remained quiet until Pierre spoke of another man. “Mal?” He repeated, his voice remaining low. He flashed the bartender a quick smile as she placed his drink down. “Do you have a picture of Mal?” A face to the name so Hector could find him. One army of super vampires created by him and Pierre versus another army created by Mal. “I think we need to go to the source of the problem first… go for Mal.” Throw a spanner in the works and bring his operation to a halt, “I let her go… she was so scared of what she’d become… we’ve all been there.” A moment of weakness from him perhaps, “I haven’t seen her since, but all has been quiet.” Whenever Lana was she wasn’t causing havoc. ━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ HECTOR SOUNDED JUDGEMENTAL, OBVIOUSLY unaware of what his vampire friend had done before he became one. Actually, the three of them had a few experiments since, but his vampire life had primarily been focused on business conquests. Pierre sighed and sipped his drink, deciding Hector’s question was better left as rhetorical. Pierre wished he was the one successfully operating on them, though he would’ve left his son out of it.
“Far stronger.” Pierre’s dark eyes ticked up to Hector’s. “Imagine fighting anozer Lana, except she can also burn you alive or electrocute you.” And that was only the tip of the iceberg━it could get much more dangerous.
Thankfully, when Pierre mentioned his own experiments, Hector kept his judgement inside his head. Vampires (and other old beings_ weren’t usually known for their incredible filters. Unfortunately, Hector also didn’t seem eager to get in on the fun. Ah, well, Pierre could always try again━Hector didn’t say no, after all.
“Ah… non, not with me. Perhaps one of my contacts might, zee ones who told me ‘e was ‘ere. I will forward one to you. I ‘aven’t seen ‘im in more zan a hundred years.” It hadn't been long enough, but Pierre was ready to face the bastard now.
“Oui, oui,” Pierre sighed again and hung his head. “we ‘ave been trying, mon ami.” He raised his drink, frowning at the idea of squandered resources. “If you come across one again, do not let dzem leave. Dzey could be very useful.” Perhaps they could open them up and find out what was done differently; what made them successful.
“I never dzought you would ‘ave a bleeding ‘eart, ‘Ector.” Pierre chuckled grimly, and finally went to polish off his drink━until, of course, he was stopped again. His phone buzzed, and the notification revealed a message from his wife. He had to get back to her and Baxter now━he’d spent too long away.
“Ah,” Finally, finally, Pierre downed the rest of his drink. “I must return to dzem now, Baxter ‘as arrived ‘ome for a visit.” Standing, he clapped Hector on the shoulder. “Dzank you for your ‘help, ‘Ector. I will get zee picture to you. Au revoir, see you soon.” With a sad (but hopeful) smile, Pierre turned and left the casino, which had once been his home, and went to the two people that consumed his heart now. He would protect them until his dying breath.
