He’d never been much into birthdays, even as a kid. It was just another day on the calendar. There was never much to celebrate when he was younger. His dad was never around to sing happy birthday to him and present him with a cake. It was only Ricky who made the effort with a cake from the store that he paid for using cash he found lying around the house. Once Manny started working he would always make sure there was a cake on the table for Ricky as well. Up until his dad started to feed stories into his head. Ricky was a traitor who’d gone over to the dark side. He was beyond help and it was better if Manny just cut his brother off. How could they trust a cop? The very people who worked actively against their family. It was the worst betrayal. So one year Manny stopped with the birthday cake and never looked back. Whoever his brother had grown up to be wasn’t the person he knew when they were kids. He wasn’t completely against birthdays though. It was always rewarding to lodge a bullet in the back of someone’s head on their birthday. The day they were brought into the world they were also removed. It was poetic and somewhat ironic. The days didn’t exactly slip away with him so it was impossible to forget today was Ricky’s birthday. Maybe if he’d slammed a few tequila shots that morning he would have been tempted to hack off his other little finger and mail that to his sibling, but what was the point in throwing something in the mail when his older brother was so close by. In fact, only a few blocks down from Manny’s apartment, sitting in a fancy office surrounded by other snakes. Today would be a treat for Ricky as Manny was going to hand deliver his gift to him. A cake with the words ‘Happy birthday big bro.’ etched on top with icing, an oversized balloon and a gift bag containing a photo frame with a photograph of Manny, Ricky and their parents. The frame had the phrase ‘A family takes care of their own.’ engraved underneath. He considered taking a lighter and burning away the faces of his parents but resisted. Manny arrived at the police department around 2pm, heading straight for the front desk. “Good afternoon, beautiful.” He offered the woman behind the desk a warm smile, “I’m here to see Detective De La Peña… I came bearing gifts for his birthday.” He showed her the balloon and gift bag, “Is he around?”ENRIQUE DE LA PEÑA

━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ RICKY WAS ITCHING FOR A BREAKTHROUGH. Manny's activity seemed to be so loud and overpowering when they’d gotten there, though it soon faded and died out. Had Ricky started off too strong? Had Hector Dacre informed his little brother of the visit he’d received, and did it send Manolo running? It didn’t seem like something he’d do, but Ricky couldn’t be sure of anything anymore.
Not when McGrath, the partner he’d grown to trust far more than anyone else in years, ended up playing for the other field. Well, that wasn’t necessarily fair, but he clearly had a soft spot for Dorothy━even if she was a big player in their active investigation. McGrath hadn’t turned in his badge, however, and Ricky wasn't sure whether that was comforting or not. Perhaps he looked to prove himself, which was noble… or perhaps he wanted to stay on the investigation to feed Dorothy information and keep her out of trouble. Ricky sighed heavily, rolling his spine to sit up straight when he realized he was far too hunched over. He didn’t enjoy desk work so much, but it was rewarding to sit through facts all laid out in front of him and find connections. His fingertips touched two pages simultaneously, sliding them closer to highlight key dates. If Manny was in New York on that specific day, then…
“Detective de la Peña?” Jill’s voice sprung from his office phone, “There’s someone here for you at reception. Cathy was just going to take the gift, but I reminded her of what happened last time…” Ricky shuddered. It was actually his birthday today━did that mean he’d receive another one of Manny’s fingers in a box? Perhaps the same one after it grew back? That was if it was taken willingly, which he hadn’t thought of until months later… he was sure he’d seen Kaden’s face that day, but the idea was so ludicrous he refused to entertain it.
“Thank you for being diligent. I’ll be there in a moment. Hold the delivery person just in case.” He began to rise from his chair when Jill added,
“He isn’t a delivery person, Detective.”
Ricky frowned, slipping his weapon into the holster on his hip. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t quicken his pace on the way to the front, spotting Jill first, standing over Cathy, who was beaming up at…
His throat dropped into his stomach, and his gut froze with an unbelievable chill. Manolo. Ricky halted a few steps from reception, desperate to not show his surprise. He didn’t want Manny to see that he’d caught him off-guard, nor did he want the women to realize something was wrong. Caught between a rock and a hard place━as he was for almost all of his career━Ricky thought about his options. He didn’t want to talk outside, as it was too public. He couldn’t drag Manny back to his office; it would be far too easy for his brother to access their files.
‘Is it really your birthday, Detective?’ Cathy chimed, far more squeaky than he could handle at the moment, though she was a great distraction━Ricky was immediately torn from his internal battle. ‘Last time they just said it was, but is it really…’
Ricky didn’t respond with words, nor did he peel his eyes off his little brother. He merely grunted in response and moved to Manny’s side.
He was all grown up. It was hard to see, especially because Ricky had raised him until their father stole every good thing Manny could’ve become. It’d been years of chasing and only catching glimpses, but he’d never seen his baby brother so close in what felt like forever. He could reach out and touch him━could throw his arms around Manny and gather him into a hug, but none of that would be appropriate. It likely wouldn’t be reciprocated, either.
“Why are you here?” Ricky growled, though he knew the answer. To gloat. To flash his freedom in his brother’s face. To assert dominance by showing up to a fucking police station when he was the leader of a large cartel. “Come with me. I need to speak with you.” But when he shifted to stand beside Manny━careful not to turn his back on his brother━Ricky had no idea where to take him. He began walking anyway, bringing Manny towards the kitchen, where there was (thankfully) no one around and no sensitive documents.

It was difficult to gauge where this never-ending feud between Enrique and Manolo would end, but it wasn’t going to end in harmony. A day where the brothers put their differences aside, accept one another's an apology and move on with their lives. It would never happen. They were far too deep into this to come back unscathed. It wouldn’t end until one of them was dead, maybe at the hands of the other. At least that was Manny’s prediction. They were born into a world where death seemed to be the only solution to a problem. Manny wasn’t going to run from Ricky though, firmly believing there was no way his older brother would slap a pair of handcuffs on his wrists and send him to jail. No, Ricky wanted to save Manny, which was a laughable concept. It brought a sly smirk to his face whenever he thought about the pointless mission his brother had set himself on. Manny didn’t need to be saved and it was about time Ricky realised that. He was exactly where he was meant to be. His whole life had been building up to the man he was today. A role he was born into, alongside his brother, except Ricky turned his back on the family bringing shame to the de la Peña name. Detective de la Peña. It was disgusting what his brother had become. Before the woman picked up the phone to call Ricky another one got to her feet, “I’m not sure if he’s free right now, but I’m happy to take the gifts and give them to Detective de la Peña.” Manny didn’t even get a chance to say anything when the other woman pulled the sleeve of her shirt and the pair started to talk in a low voice. “Don’t you remember what happened last time… with the box and you know… the finger.” The women thought they were being coy, but Manny could just about pick up on their conversation with a tight smile on his face. It was great to hear that Ricky received Manny’s last gift safely. “I will call him now.” Manny flashed her another warm smile, “I appreciate it, sweetheart.”Manny stepped back from the desk, observing his surroundings at the station, half listening to the conversation between Ricky and the woman on reception. The walls had classic posters stuck to them, about illegal substances and robbery, telling people how many years they could be facing if they committed certain crimes. It was all a little too late if someone was down at the desk being processed. Some of his men were served similar times, some for crimes they didn’t even commit but took the fall for Manny or someone higher up the food chain. It earned them a gold star though and once they were out they would move further up the chain, if they made it out. Some of the men perished inside, just proving to Manny that those people weren’t cut out for this lifestyle. They were lucky to have gone that way rather than at the hands of Manny. He heard a door click open and as he spun around he spotted Ricky standing there, or at least an older version of Ricky from what he last remembered. Most people would have been proud of their siblings for escaping their criminal ridden family and making something of themselves, but Manny wasn’t proud of Ricky. Not even in the slightest. The tight and somewhat sinister smile that had been resting on his face since he stepped into the station grew wider as the brother's locked eyes. “Mi hermano.” Ricky didn’t offer him a smile though. Not even a fake one to make everyone think Ricky was happy to see his brother. “Because it’s your birthday.” He spoke as if that was the only answer to such a question. Manny kept his gaze locked on Ricky as he moved alongside him, instructing him to follow him into the kitchen. “Ladies. It’s been a pleasure.” He gave the two females on the front desk a small nod as he followed Ricky to what appeared to be a kitchen. Once inside Manny placed the gifts down on the table before carefully placing the balloon down near the table, the heavy end hitting the floor ensuring the balloon didn’t float away. ━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ “WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE FOR THE LAST FEW years, then?” Ricky nearly sneered, but he wouldn’t give Manny the satisfaction. Somewhere beneath that hard, rough surface, he was aching at the sight of his brother like this. How far they’d strayed from one another; the fact that his very presence put Ricky on edge.
This wasn’t the life he’d wanted for them. It wasn’t the one he built for them, but Manny made his decision when he killed their father.
And yet, even though Ricky should’ve taken it as a sign that Manolo was too far gone, there was still hope buried inside him. That same deeply hidden part that ached for his brother had hidden Manny’s name in the investigation, sure that he could fix this; find some way to bring Manny back to the light.
For a moment, he wondered if this visit was a step toward that, but seeing Manny’s face told him otherwise. He was smirking like the cat that got the cream.
He wouldn’t call it panic. He needed to speak to Manny━though it was more likely to be an interrogation━and he couldn’t do it in such a public setting, nor could it happen in his office. It wasn’t a panicked decision, but he needed the upper hand, and the kitchen seemed like his best bet.
Ricky circled to face Manny as soon as they entered, narrowing his eyes. “Are you crazy?” He began, voice sharp, tone accusatory. “Who do you think you are, coming here like this? With… what is this? Another finger?” Ricky practically growled, eyes boring into Manny━he had something to do with that, didn’t he? How could he not?
Reaching forward, Ricky snatched the bag and tugged out the tissue paper, lifting the ‘gift.’ It took a moment to register, and then he stayed there, staring at the photo━at one of the last times he was allowed to be a kid. The hand holding the frame tightened, knuckles going white as he stared at their faces. Their family… when there still was one.
“You come into my place of work…” He began, sucking in a breath, dark eyes flicking up to his brother’s. “... Into a police station while you’re a wanted criminal, and you threaten me?” Ricky practically tossed the frame down, letting it land roughly atop the table. “You’re not untouchable, Manolo. Remember that.”

Excuse? He didn’t need a fucking excuse. Maybe he just didn’t want to see his brother aka the man who turned on his family and became the black sheep. The man who’d rather join the blues than stand by his little brother who he’d virtually raised. So yeah that was his excuse. “I’m here now. That’s the main thing.” It was all fake smiles and forced pleasantries in front of his staff. Beneath the surface, both men were filled with anger, although Ricky’s anger probably burnt brighter. Yes, they were in Ricky’s place of work but Manny still had the upper hand in the situation, at least in his mind. It was as if he was almost testing his brother, seeing how far he could push him before he snapped. Those handcuffs resting on Ricky’s belt wouldn’t be used on Manny. He didn’t have the balls to arrest his brother in the middle of the police station he worked at. Not without trying to appeal to Manny’s better side, which had faded away into nothing by now. “A finger?” He pretended to sound shocked. He held his hands up to his brother, spreading his fingers wide. “All ten accounted for… well eight fingers and two thumbs if you want to get into specifics.” He lowered his hands, “No idea what you’re on about Enrique, sorry.” What was even more satisfying was the fact Ricky couldn’t even tell anyone about it because if confronted Manny could happily show he had no missing fingers. He would add a joke in for good measure too, “Not unless I can magically grow missing body parts.” Next time he may send something bigger, like a hand or a foot. Maybe that would send Ricky over the edge. Manny watched carefully as Ricky started to unwrap the gift. One that was guaranteed to tug viciously on Ricky’s heart strings. As he placed the picture into the frame, staring down at his mom, it almost triggered emotions in Manny. She was a totally innocent party and she didn’t deserve to die. Her death set the wheels in motion and set Manny’s future in concrete. “A wanted criminal?” Again, he pretended to act shocked. “Well then Dective de la Peña you better arrest me then.” His eyes drifted down as the frame hit the surface of the to harshly, fixating on that for a few seconds before looking back at Ricky. All traces of humor had dropped from his face, leaving him with a stern look. “You think this is a threat? This is just the tip of the iceberg… hay más por venir.” Well, maybe there was, maybe there wasn’t. ENRIQUE DE LA PEÑA - translation: there is more to come - wanna wrap up with yours?

━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ YES, A FINGER. A FINGER WITH THEIR family’s crest on it, a symbol their grandfather had come up with when he began his life of crime. Of course, Manny wouldn’t admit to it now, especially not when he could show off he’d grown it back like a fucking starfish. Now he knew for sure Manny had been in on it, almost trying to provoke something in him━worry? Care? And why? What would it matter? Was Manny trying to prove his older brother still cared for him? He should’ve already known that━Ricky was focusing his entire career on trying to turn this around.
Ricky shook his head and opened the gift instead, only growing more irritated at it. Well, perhaps irritated wasn’t the right word. The backs of his eyes burned, and he wondered how Manny could do something like this. Bringing their mother into it? What did he gain from that? Were there no morals━no humanity━left in him?
He gritted his teeth, finding no snarky response to Manny’s quip. He wasn’t the type for verbal back-and-forth; it would get them nowhere. They both knew Ricky couldn’t━wouldn’t━arrest him here, no matter how much he should’ve. It pained Ricky to not do his job correctly, but this was his baby brother, he had to give him a chance to turn around. And, more than that, he could only try Manny for the same crime once━he needed more evidence for his case. He needed Dacre, or one of his lackeys, to fold.
Matching Manolo’s stern expression, Ricky leaned forward slightly, as though he were showing a wild animal he wasn’t afraid. “Watch where you step, Manolo. I can only give you so much room before I’ll be forced to act.” He wanted to work through this carefully━Manolo couldn’t be aware Ricky was giving him too much leeway, but Ricky also wanted him to know that’s why he hadn’t taken him down yet. Or, at least think that was the reason, and not that Ricky wasn’t ready.
Ricky extended a hand, pointing almost violently to their mother’s face, “She died for this life.” He hissed, “She died because of him, because of his actions, and I took a risk trying to make sure you didn’t end up like her. You’ve signed your own death warrant, Manolo, no matter which way this goes.” But Ricky couldn’t be the one to do it. He’d visit his baby brother every day in prison for the rest of his life, but he would never harm him
“You need to leave.” Ricky huffed, picking up the frame and dropping it into the bag, then carelessly stuffing in the tissue paper after it. He didn’t want anyone to see it; it would be just his luck that one of the green fucking cops in the station remembered a single lesson from their high school Spanish class. Grabbing the bag (and leaving the balloon), Ricky reached out with his free hand and pushed it into the centre of Manny’s back, leading him out. Ricky’s heart ached for what had happened to their family, but he would change this. He had to.
