Lori told Winter from a young age to stay away from everything and anything that could be addictive. There was apparently a gene that ran in her family which meant one wrong turn could have her hooked on something for the rest of her life. She would end up dead well before her time was due. That included alcohol. For a long time she was too scared to even take the smallest sip of wine, convincing herself she would end up like her parents. It was only a few months ago that she built up the courage to actually try alcohol. Nothing heavy, just a strawberry cooler. She hated it. When she arrived at the Founders Day party she was offered a glass of white wine on arrival, which she gingerly accepted. It was just one glass. The one glass of wine soon turned into three or four glasses. Unlike the cooler, she actually liked the taste of wine and after her second glass, she noticed that her surroundings became softer. Her shoulders dropped and her body relaxed. Lori’s voice was ringing through her ears, but a few glasses of wine wasn’t enough to get someone addicted, but as she stood waiting for Lex to arrive she sort of understood why her dad drank so much. It was a way to block out whatever shit was happening around him. Granted, Winter didn’t need to block out anything. Life was good. Lex was paying for their hotel room, which was sweet and she had a new job at the museum. She leaned against the wall, her head resting back and another glass of wine in her hand. She thought about her new job for a moment. Okay, so maybe there were a few things she needed to block out. Most of the items Penny shoved into her hands were fine but every now and then she would have a flashback to a gruesome and brutal event. That day she felt like every single item she touched had some horrific backstory. She needed to unwind from all of that. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a stall, with a few people huddled around. Curiosity peaked and she headed over to see that people were putting their names down for auction. The woman explained that whoever bid the most for her would spend the day with her. Without the glass of wine in her hand Winter would have never have put her name down for that. She was terrified of human connection and Lori told her sometimes men would only want her for one thing. Mainly the two humps stuck to her chest, but whatever the wine was telling her to sign up. Winter strutted up on stage once her name was called with confidence oozing from her with every step. It was difficult to keep up with the cards flying up in the air every ten seconds accompanied by someone bellowing a figure. Regardless, she was eager to see who was going to be the highest bidder until someone at the back yelled a figure that was double what everyone else was offering. She strained her eyes to locate exactly who it was, partly because there were so many people but partly because the alcohol was blurring her vision. LEX CAMERON

━ one click and you are overwritten ━ EVEN WHEN HE WAS HOME, LEX DIDN’T REALLY LIKE leaving his house. Actually, he didn’t like leaving the entertainment room. He left for the sake of freedom, but that didn’t mean he’d be heading out any more often. Apparently, Winter had other plans.
Lex was content to sit in their hotel room and surf the web (or crawl inside it), shoving candy down his throat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He kept the blinds closed, lived like a hermit, and was happy. Why did Winter have to drag him out? Why did he agree?
Maybe ‘cause she pressed. And she was pretty. But also mostly ‘cause nothing was really going on with Will at the moment, so he didn’t have much to do at home other than some research and securing the firewalls… over and over again. So, yeah, he totally had time to go out. He just didn’t want to. But whatever, he said he’d go━especially after Winter’s run-in with her so-called FBI brother━so he’d have to find something to wear. Lex had a million penguin suits back home, but none he’d brought with him. It wasn’t as if he thought running away would include going to a bunch of snazzy parties.
So… Lex went out to shop. He probably hated shopping even more than parties, but he didn’t really have a choice. So, he bought some flashy fuckin’ suit that’d make alllll these small-town bitches jealous, and then he went to the Founder’s Day Party… ball, thing, whatever. Fashionably late.
Apparently, fashionably meant too late. Lex texted Winter after a minute or two of scanning the crowd trying to find her, but it went unanswered. He sighed, deciding to slip through the hoard of people and head towards the commotion, ‘cause it was more likely Winter was focused on whatever everybody else was.
Unless they were all focused on her.
His blue eyes expanded to the size of saucers when he saw her on the stage, her cheeks looking kinda… pink. Like, maybe she was embarrassed, but Lex kinda went to worse-case-scenario━Winter was totally drunk and ready to fling herself at all the dudes here. He couldn’t help the queasy burn in the pit of his stomach, but Lex refused to acknowledge it as jealousy. It wasn’t. It wasn’t even ‘cause he was worried about his friend, ‘cause they weren’t really friends, just… like, using each other for mutually beneficial reasons. He wasn’t worried about her or some stupid shit like that.
But then someone called out a high number━miles above the rest, which were already crazy amounts━and Lex cocked his head towards the man. He looked a little weird━short, balding with tufts of hair sticking out, and scraggly. Maybe that was just Lex’s personal opinion, but it didn’t matter. He froze in place, conscious bleeding into his phone. Sprinting through the internet, he found the man’s phone, then headed into his bank account. There was enough to cover his bid and then some, but not once Lex was done. The account flooded out, imaginary little coins draining until they ended up on Lex’s end.
Eventually, he slipped back out━just before the auctioneer announced the final call. Going once, going twice…
“Yo!” Lex barked first, hand shooting up, and then called out a number that doubled the stranger’s. There were a few gasps and murmurs, and the auctioneer muttered,
“Um, you have to actually have the money to pay now, kid.”
“I fuckin’ do.” Lex grumbled stubbornly, moving towards the stage. “Bet he doesn’t.” He added, a little quieter, and stood at the edge of the platform, raising a hand up to Winter. “C’mon,” Lex puffed, “Get down. I didn’t know you’d start partyin’ without me. Are you drunk?” Sure, he sounded judgemental, but what the hell. He wasn’t expecting to come to the party and be bombarded with… a bunch of feelings.
Before the countdown could even begin again, the same guy called out again, topping Lex’s offer. The boy ground his teeth together, blue eyes cutting back into the crowd from where they’d been trained on Winter, glaring at the dude who didn’t know his account had been drained dry.

Convincing Lex to come to the party was a struggle. The boy literally lived inside his computer. Winter was a little bit curious as to what he actually did in there and what it was like to be inside a computer. It must have been interesting though given he spent every waking moment locked in there, depriving himself of the outside world. She knew the party was Lex’s idea of hell, but Winter insisted he came with her. She didn’t give up until he caved and finally said yes, which had her bouncing with joy because she hated the idea of going alone. Everyone would be there with their date or partner, whereas she would have been standing in the corner feeling awkward and out of place. This fancy ball wasn’t her cup of tea, but if they were going to stay in Mystic Falls for a while they needed to participate in something. With no surprise Lex was late anyway. He was probably doing something super important with his computer that just couldn’t wait a few more hours. Maybe he went on some of those sites whilst he had five minutes alone, without Winter asking him what he was thinking of wearing to the ball, as if he was one of the girls. The auction would keep her occupied until he arrived. She knew it was the wine filling her with the confidence she needed to stand up in front of everyone and offer herself out on a plate. This was her idea of hell, but there was a first time for everything. Plus, she might have some cutie bid on her and they run off into the sunset together, once Winter got over her crippling fear of touching people. That idea was soon squashed when she finally sourced the person who had their card waving in the area. Ugh, he looked weird and a little sweaty until the bright light above him. Fuck, she didn’t even read the terms and conditions at the bottom of the paper before she signed on the dotted line. She had no idea what actually happened if this bald man won. Going once, going twice.— Shit, shit, shit. Then someone else yelled from the crowd, not only matching the weird man’s bid but doubling. “Lex?” She could just about make out his blonde hair cruising through the crowd towards the stage until he was at the end of the platform, waiting for her. “What? Drunk? Nah… okay maybe a little, but…” Whatever, she didn’t need to justify herself to Lex. With a heavy sigh she was ready to haul herself off stage, feeling a little grateful Lex had saved her from the man in the crowd. Then the same guy yelled out again. Winter crouched down slightly to Lex, “You gotta save me from that greasy man…” She lowered her voice a little, “Just bid whatever and we can make a run for it.” It wasn’t the first time she dipped out on something without paying and she wasn’t letting Lex lose money over her stupid idea to sign herself up for the auction because she was feeling wine confident, which was now fading away. Winter stood back up again, glancing over at the auctioneer as she flashed him a friendly smile but he glanced away from her and back towards the crowd. If this man won she could easily disappear into the sea of people before darting out the front door and heading back to the hotel. “Going once…” His voice boomed across the hall as she flashed Lex a pleading look. ━ one click and you are overwritten ━ LEX DIDN’T KNOW WHY THE HELL HE WAS EVEN HERE, or why the hell he was helping Winter out of this shitty situation. She’d gotten herself into it, right? So it was her responsibility to get herself out.
But he couldn’t just turn around and leave her with that fuckin’ bald dude. Lex could only imagine what that guy would wanna do to Winter, and even thinking about it had him shivering with disgust.
Draining his bank account was the first step, then out-bidding the dude was the next. Obviously, this old dumbass didn’t check his phone enough (or didn’t have alerts on), ‘cause he should’ve seen that he was about to pay a huuuuuge ass overdraft fee.
Elbowing his way to Winter, he frowned when she admitted she was drunk━a little bit or a lot didn’t matter, ‘cause she was about to get groped by some old dude for thinkin’ this was a good idea. Jeez, why did she do anything without him?
Not ‘cause he, like, wanted to see her all the time or anything. That’s not what he meant. Lex liked his space, but… he just meant that he was the smart one, obviously, and she shoulda listened to him more!
Lex glared through the dark crowd, finding Creepy Bald Dude somewhere in the sea of faces as he bet money he didn’t have on Winter. She crouched down without taking his hand and, once she spoke again, Lex awkwardly let it sink to his side, eyes trained on her face. “I’m tryin’.” He grumbled, frowning up at Winter, “Y’know, this was really stupid…” His whisper turned a little forceful━a little more panicked━as she stood again and the auctioneer called out another countdown.
“Fiiiine, jeez! This dude can’t give it a rest, huh? You think she’s gonna want that old, worn-out meat, man?” Lex cackled, successfully getting more attention on him. The auctioneer paused for a moment and then, with that same patronizing voice, said,
“Kid, you make a bet, or you stay quiet. This isn’t━”
“One million dollars!” Lex called out in his best Dr. Evil impression, raising his pinky finger to the edge of his lips. The auctioneer sighed into the mic, but Lex had already slipped away from his body, leaving it stuck in the same position.
The guy’s lecture was cut off. His mic went dead first, then the lights died. All their energy slid into Lex, and he was finally back in his own body as the audience began to quietly bustle and murmur about the power going out.
Lex reached toward Winter in the dark, curling his fingers around her ankle as gently as possible. “Winter,” He said lightly, hoping the sound from everyone else would cover him. He lifted his other hand despite the embarrassment he’d suffered last time, holding it out for her. “Grab my hand; I’ll help you down. Let’s fuckin’ diiip, bro.” It was easier to make a run for it in the pitch-black, right? Dude, again, he was so fuckin’ smart.

She felt confident on stage for all of five seconds before she noticed all the eyes staring back at her under the bright lighting. Stupid alchohol convincing her to do stupid things and now she was about to the reap the consequences as the awful looking man in the crowd was determining to buy her. Her stomach did somersaults as she thought about spending a whole day with him. Him, his greasy hair and sweaty armpits. Why the fuck wasn’t any hot men outbidding him? Suddenly her confidence dipped harshly. What did she think was going to happen? Some guy was going to win her, they could go on a cute date where she would sit about ten feet away from him and jump back whenever he got close. She knew he was going to piss at her before she even saw his face, but he was going to save her. All was well. She caught the frown on his face when she admitted she was a little drunk. Why wouldn’t she be? They were handing out free alcohol to everyone and she loved a freebie, even if it did drive her to climb on stage and offer herself up like a piece of meat. Drunk Winter was an idiot and would be kept under close observation in the future. She didn’t need Lex telling her it a stupid idea though. “I didn’t know that bald-headed asshole was going to bid on me. I thought…” The hot guys. “One million dollars.”Winter’s eyes shot over to Lex as she shook her head harshly, “Too far.” She said through gritted teeth. She was expecting a few thousand, but not a million dollars. The awkwardness she was feeling only increased as well due to everyone in the crowd whispering and gasping. Then the area descended into darkness. Lex. She almost let out a quiet yelp when she felt someone grab hold of her ankle, but she let out a sigh of relief when she heard Lex’s voice cut through everyone else. She crouched down, grabbing hold of his hand before leaping off the stage, her heels clattering against the wooden floor. “Jesus fucking Christ.” She spoke in a low voice as the two maneuvered through the crowd of people, holding Lex’s hand, keeping her head low incase the creep spotted her trying to escape. Soon as they hit the fresh air she broke into a smile which then turned into a hearty laugh. “That was a close call! Damn, I worried there for a second. Thanks for saving me.” She reached forward, pulling Lex in for a tight hug, knowing full well he probably hated hugs, but she was intoxicated and forever grateful Lex had stepped up to save her. ━ one click and you are overwritten ━ SERIOUSLY, WHY THE HELL DID EVERYBODY doubt him? Lex was badass as fuck. His powers here badass as fuck. Winter could see the future or whatever, but could she suck energy outta shit? Hack into stuff with just her mind? Restart a car battery?! Hell no! He was fucking sick and it was about time all these bitches caught on! Will, too! Actually, Will especially! Screw that dude; he’d be dead or in prison without Lex!
He hadn’t heard Winter’s ‘too far’ ‘cause he was already gone but, if he had, he woulda been like: Too far my ass.
It wasn’t too far when the lights were out and he was reaching over to help her down. Winter was probs thankful as fuck, and who got shit done? Who was the dopest psychic around? Lex, obviously.
It was kinda too far when she jumped down and, like, almost broke her ankle or whatever and he, like, grabbed her to keep her steady. ‘Cause then they got real close, and Winter was all smushed against him, and Lex was pretty sure he almost touched her butt when he put an arm around her waist. He was trynna help, dude! He didn’t want her to get her shit rocked like Zoey had, he wasn’t━like, that would be weird, they were just… like, not like that.
He peeled away as quick as possible━once he was sure Winter wasn’t gonna get fucked up━and led her through the crowd, trying to calm down as he did. The lights would be out for a while, so he wasn’t worried about that, but it was still better to get out faster. He wasn’t trynna take his sweet-ass time.
Once they were out the doors and into the street, Lex let out a sigh of relief. He’d stopped freaking out, Winter had stopped freaking out, and they could just━
Lex froze when Winter threw her arms around him. He didn’t really like hugs, he just wasn’t used to physical affection, but it was different to when he’d grabbed her. This time, she was thanking him for saving her, ‘cause obviously she really needed his help and he totally delivered.
Apparently, doing this hero shit felt kinda good. Lex was happy to save his, uh, friend (ugh), and he was kinda realizing why Will was so into it. Obviously, it made chicks all happy, too. He melted a bit, sighing and unfreezing from where his arms were stuck ramrod straight at his sides. They slipped around her, reciprocating the super close hug Winter had him trapped in, where he could feel her against his ribs again, along with the heat from her body. And he… oh, Jesusfuckfuckfuck.
“Aiiiiight,” Lex cleared his throat, stepping back and gently pushing Winter away by her hips. He’d hugged her for long enough, ‘kay? He was fine. And he’d saved her, so he wasn’t as big an asshole as she thought. Turning away quickly, he awkwardly pointed towards the Grey Haven. “Let’s, uh, get back. ‘Cause you need, like, sleep and bread or some shit.” Lex started to walk, but then he paused again and glanced over his shoulder, waiting just in case she was too wobbly and needed someone to hold onto again. Like, to keep her balance. See, he wasn’t that bad.
