❝ I'm Like A Shooting Star... I've Come So Far❞
” I didn’t know I had such a good aim…” Aubrey said to her friend impressed with the large stuffed panda she had won herself. Just by throwing some bean bags at cans. She didn’t even know she was such a good throw. She peered in the rear-view mirror as she drove and looked at the panda wondering briefly where she was going to put the damn thing.
Relaxing a little in her seat as she drove the car away from the carnival she and her best friend had just been to. Concentrating as this was a new car only just recently bought by her father and she wanted to look after it. Taking it slow, only just… doing the speed limit as she drove back in toward Mystic Falls square to drop Hazel back off at home.
” Did you have fun?” Aubrey asked her friend her eyes flicking ever so briefly to her before looking back at the road. Last thing she wanted was to be completely reliant on her father to ferry her from place to place. She had worked hard to get her licence and was working even harder to help her dad pay for this car… so she was determined to look after it.
While she was all excited about the fun at the carnival that they had just been too… and her friend seemed out of sorts, ” Haze are you ok? You seem… I don’t know…out of sorts. “ Aubrey asked her out of concern.
Notes: This sucks I'm sorry

Hazel wasted more money than she cared to admit on the fair games, especially when she watched Abi win a stuffed panda. She erupted into a cheer as the can flew off the shelf. Hazel stepped up next, confident there was no way she would miss the cans given she made the baseball team but each time the beanbag flew past the cans barely touching them. The only thing she won was a keyring, which she proudly displayed on her house keys. She jumped in the car alongside her best friend, “I know! That was awesome. You should totally try out for the baseball team with a throw like that.” She glanced back at the huge panda on the backseat for a second, “You should give him or her a name.” Her eyes lingered for a little longer as she imagined her new brother or sister sitting alongside the panda, all wide-eyed and buzzed on their way home from the carnival. Hazel hoped she’d be able to win fun prizes for her new sibling in the future, but she’d have to work on her aim. There was a spin in her stomach as she was filled with excitement about the fact she was getting a baby sibling. Carnivals were always fun for Hazel. Fair games, rides and all the cotton candy in the world. From the moment she stepped into the carnival she would be bouncing from stall to stall like a hyperactive kid and that was before the cotton candy. It was a chance for her to be a kid for a few hours whilst inside those walls. “Best time ever! Did you?” Of course Abi did, she had a stuffed panda sitting on the backseat as a trophy for a day filled with carnival fun. Radios were always tuned in nowadays, Hazel knew that, but it didn’t stop her from looking down at Abi’s radio when she started to hear the faint sound of white noise in the background. It was switched off, but Hazel had the urge to push the on button as if messing the dials was going to tune into the noise she could hear crackling in her ears. Then she heard Hazel’s voice echoing and she quickly snapped back to reality, “Huh?” She then broke into a short chuckle, realising she had been staring at the radio, “I was just wondering if there was anything decent on the radio” Instincts got the better of her as she reached forward and turned the radio on. The car filled with quiet music, but it wasn’t what she was looking for. She fiddled with the dials, flicking through radio station after radio station. Nothing helped. AUBREY SHEPARD

❝ I'm Like A Shooting Star... I've Come So Far❞
Flicking her gaze back to the panda which was taking up the backseat. She openly laughed when her friend said she should join the team, ” Haze you know I love you, but I suck at sports. I’m a complete klutz in every other aspect of my life.” Aubrey reminded her. Apparently, her hand eye coordination was off the charts good… but tripping over thin air that took skill.
When she mentioned about a name, she flicked her eyes back at the panda again a few times pondering. Then she grinned and added, ” Po. Kung Fu Panda…” She announced like a complete dork, though she was only joking. In truth she had no idea what she was going to call him as she had never expected for a second that she might actually win it, ” I don’t know. I’ll think about it.” She added in the end.
As they were driving away from the carnival and driving back into town Aubrey asked her if she had fun. She was coming away rather empty handed. She smiled when she announced that she did, ” Of course I did…” Aubrey laughed as she focused intensely on the road ahead of her. Silence fell between them for a moment, Aubrey focusing on the road while her friend… Aubrey flicked a glance at Hazel. Was intently focused on the radio.
Her gaze seemed to go completely vacant. Aubrey resisted the urge to wave a hand in her face to bring her back. Asking if she was ok which just got a huh sound from her. Aubrey laughed a bit, ” Girl you were completely away with the fairies just then.” Aubrey told her with a light chuckle to her voice. When she said about wondering if there was anything good on Aubrey let her play about with it.
Though concern eventually got the better of her when she seemed to be flicking through each channel, plenty with decent songs on, but nothing seemed to be making her happy, ” There are some CDs in the glove box if you don’t like anything…” She prompted gently, ” You sure you’re ok?” She asked again.
By passing the centre of town heading out toward the residential areas to drop Hazel off at home, they hit a dark road. It was short but completely dark, the only light provided was the headlights illuminating the path in front of her. Aubrey slowed down to do even less than the speed limit. Turning to face her friend again only for a split second and her gaze went back to the road as she caught something moving.
A person.
She sucked in a breath, and she hit the brakes turning the wheel in attempt to avoid who had stepped out in front of her car. Though it was too late at the corner of her car sent that person up and over the window on Hazels side. The sharpness of the turn had the tyres squealing and then the car was turning over. Rolling over a few times, her heart was in her mouth as the car veered off road into a ditch, thankfully the right side up.
For a few minutes everything was black, as she groaned. Blinking a few times as she turned to her friend who was still in the passengers’ seat, ” Oh god…” Aubrey groaned, ” Hazel!” She said as loudly as she could muster, her immediate priority was her friend, ” Hazel please. Answer me.” Aubrey asked as she reached out a hand covered in blood and small shards of glass to try and take hold of hers, ” Please god be ok…” Aubrey cried out as she attempted to move taking in the damage.

With each passing channel, she was convinced she was picking up distorted messages, but maybe that was all in her head. Maybe she was convincing herself she could hear something. It was only a few nights ago did she bring herself to turn the lamp off before going to bed, submerging herself in the darkness, telling herself whatever noise she thought she could hear was just the wind whistling outside. This wasn’t wind though, she was certain of that, but still couldn’t fully understand what it was. She accepted defeat and reached for the CDs in the glove box. “So old school having CDs.” She chuckled as she flicked through the selection before stopping at one, “Harry Styles!” She exclaimed as she quickly opened the case and pushed the CD into the player. Perhaps if she focused on the music playing in the car it would drown out whatever else she thought she could hear. Hazel didn’t want to go home because if she went home that meant she would have to go to bed then what? She’d be out in the woods screaming again in the early hours of the morning and uncle Kit would be racing to find her. The image of the dead woman in the woods flashed through her mind. Something which had burnt itself into her long term memory. As soon as she got home though she’d tell her parents and they’d make sure she was okay. They wouldn’t let her stroll out into the woods to find another dead body and everything would be okay. Everything was going to be fine. She tapped away lightly on the door of the car, singing along to the lyrics whilst glancing over at her best friend with a huge grin on her face despite the fear that was building up inside of her, using her own voice to drown out the whispers that were growing louder. Her dad told her sometimes it was better to give in to them, but Hazel was terrified. The fear rocketed even further when Abi slammed on the brakes as they hit something solid. Hazel let out a squeal as the person hit the windshield and the car tumbled into a nearby ditch. The sound of Abi’s voice rattled through her head as she slowly opened her eyes with a low groan. Her gaze darted around the car as it took her a second to realise what happened. “Abi?” She croaked as brushed her hair out of her face, her hand catching on an open wound on her forehead. She looked over at her friend, “Are you okay?” She shuffled slightly in her seat, slowly moving to unclip her seatbelt. Nothing hurt, but there was so much adrenaline rushing through her system. Her eyes widened as she turned to Abi, “We need to check that person is okay!” She exclaimed, with a little more hurry in her movements as she threw the seatbelt off her body. Hazel twisted her body around to open the passenger door that didn’t seem to budge when she pushed it. She shuffled about in the seat again, positioning her feet against the door as she kicked it a few times. Eventually, the door creaked open and she rushed to get out of the car. AUBREY SHEPARD

❝ I'm Like A Shooting Star... I've Come So Far❞
Typical that their fun night would end like this. Had such a fun time at the carnival. Candy floss, rides, and games… no thoughts of a family werewolf curse that she might face some day. It was just a good time with her best friend. Something it seemed that they both needed. Driving carefully on the way back, on the dark roads. Even driving slower than the speed limit. Aubrey was nothing if not careful.
She smiled a little when Hazel decided to raid the CD collection in the glove box of the car. She laughed when she exclaimed at the Harry Styles CD, ” Had to put that in there for you.” Aubrey laughed a little as she slipped his CD into the player. At least she was relaxing now, stopping flicking through the radio. Aubrey went back to concentrating on the road. Her lips started to mime the words to a one of the songs she knew.
When she flicked her gaze only briefly to her friend and then back to the road, a person was there waiting in front of the car. Everything from that moment went by so quickly that she barely had time to react. Slamming on her brakes and swerving to avoid the man but was too late and the corner of the car hit him, sending him up and over the car.
The car swerved, rolled, and tumbled into a ditch. Aubrey was out for only a few minutes, before groaning herself awake. Her head felt beyond sore, but that wasn’t her concern. Her friend was. She sighed with relief when she heard Hazel speak, ” I’m sore…” Aubrey answered but other than that she was ok, ” Are you ok?” Aubrey asked her. Hazel started moving quickly and then what she said registered.
The person she hit.
Aubrey started moving herself as well. Unclicking her own seat belt, ” Be careful...” Aubrey reminded her as Hazel started rushing to get out of the totalled car. Aubrey moved a little slower reaching for her own car door and it was a little stiff using the side of her body to force it open. She pushed herself out and stumbled her way up and out of the ditch and onto the road. She took in a shaky breath as she made her way over to the person, ” Oh god…” Aubrey spoke aloud to no one in particular. She didn’t even need to get close… this guy was dead…

In that brief moment as the car veered off the road Hazel was convinced she was going to die. She squeezed her eyes shut with fear as she waited for the impact. She was never going to meet her new sibling and her parents were going to be devastated. Darkness swallowed her, but thankfully not death. The light flooded her eyes not long after. It was like that night in the woods when she didn’t feel the branches and twigs digging into the soles of her feet as she sprinted through the trees. It was as if her body had switched off from the pain, which is what probably happened as she dragged herself from the wreck. Even the open wound on her head wasn’t hurting. Her body jammed itself in survival mode. “Yeah, I’m fine.” Nothing felt broken. Her limbs weren’t dangling at weird angles, which was a good sign. She didn’t care about herself though, she was more concerned with the person lying in the middle of the road, but surely they’d be okay. The girls were okay so that person would be okay. At least that’s how she was trying to rationalise everything in her head as she pulled herself out of the car. The white noise filled her head once more, but it was growing even louder. She could no longer ignore it as she considered giving in to the whispers, just like her dad said, but she couldn’t leave Abi and sprint off into the darkness. She followed Abi as they approached the person, but Hazel wasn’t even focused on the person. The noise was crushing her mind to the point she didn’t even hear Abi mutter something. “Shh.” Hazel whispered, as she turned away from her friend and the man, resting her fingers lightly on her temples as she closed her eyes. The person on the floor. Hazel spun back around, opening her eyes as her hands fell to her side. The urge to let it all out bubbled in her chest as she swallowed harshly, taking another step back from Abi. “I—” Her sentence was cut short by the sound of the piercing scream that left her mouth as she pressed her eyes shut. Her hands curled up in a fist, her nails digging into the palm of her hands as the scream ripped through her throat. Once she fell silent everything seemed clear. A hazy fog had been lifted from her mind as she opened her eyes, her gaze on Abi. “We need to call an ambulance.” But she knew it was too late for the person. AUBREY SHEPARD

❝ I'm Like A Shooting Star... I've Come So Far❞
There is a brief moment when something scary happens, that your life flashes before your eyes. When Abi’s car went careening off the road, when she tried to avoid someone who just stepped out into the middle of the freaking road! That is what happened to her. When everything stopped moving for a brief moment everything was black… before the world seemed to come back to her. Lights filtered in and she was careful not to move to much. Taking stock of her own injuries… she could feel all her limbs. Her head felt sore… and when she lifted her arm, she felt the warmth of blood on her head.
Calling for her friend to answer, praying that she wasn’t dead. She was relieved when her friend answered and told her she was fine. Hazel got moving first, determined to see if the person they hit was ok. Abi ran after Hazel slower telling her to be careful as she approached the person. Abi kept moving into the road, carefully. It was still a road and cars could still come speeding down it at any time.
Aubrey muttered her disbelief of what she was seeing. She looked at Hazel. Next thing she knew she was covering her ears as Hazel let out a piercing scream. Covering her ears to try and muffle the scream as it rattled around in her head. Sounds weren’t usually this bad. Aubrey crumpled to the ground covering her ears and her head. Eventually everything fell silent, and she looked up at her friend, who seemed to be more herself now.
” What-” Abi started to ask what the hell that was, then something fell over her. Pain shot through her body, and she let out her own scream. Her eyes shut as the pain swept through her. Sharp and intense. It lasted only moments and when she looked up again the pain was gone but her eyes shining a brilliant yellow.

It felt like a fever dream. Something she was witnessing from outside her body. The smashed car, Abi climbing from the wreck, the person on the road. Somehow she was a lot calmer than she anticipated she would be in a situation like this but it was probably because the voices were guiding her or trying to guide her. She wasn’t actually thinking, she was too busy listening, trying to make sense of what they were trying to tell her. Why wasn’t this easier? Why didn’t the voices speak to her using words? It was as if her abilities were trying to work against her, making it impossible for her to figure out the answer. The answer was lying in front of her. Dead on the road. She couldn’t hold it back a second longer. The same scream that brought her uncle Kit sprinting through the woods toward her months ago. Hopefully he wouldn’t be the first one to find her this time though because unlike before she was ready to call the cops. This was an accident. Totally different from finding a body in the woods with no sign of the killer. This could be explained and the pair weren’t going to get in trouble for this. She hoped. “I’ll explain…” Later, but she didn’t get to finish her sentence before Abi let out a scream. It wasn’t the high pitch scream that left Hazel. It was a scream of pain. Hazel rushed over towards Abi, reaching out for her friend's arm. “Are you okay?” But then Abi looked up at her and Hazel stepped back quickly, a look of disbelief on her face. “Abi… your eyes… they’re yellow!” She exclaimed loudly, turning around for a brief second. Was it the reflection from the car in the ditch? No, that was impossible. “Oh my… what is going on?” AUBREY SHEPARD wanna wrap up with yours?

❝ I'm Like A Shooting Star... I've Come So Far❞
What was happening tonight? Abi wondered to herself. The cold seeped into her skin chilling her to the bone as they pulled themselves from her car wreckage and back onto the road. Hazel ahead of her as she neared the body, as she had gotten out of the car much faster. Once Abi neared the road she didn’t need- nor want- to get closer to the body. They were dead.
Fear filled her instantly, shattered when Hazel let out an ear-splitting scream. Abi covered her ears out of protection. It lasted only a few moments and she stopped. She started to ask what the hell was that for? Screaming at seeing the body she could understand but they felt different somehow.
She barely got out the first word of her question when a rush of pain swept through her. Burning through her like a flashfire. Quick, sharp and intense, wrenching from her, her own scream as she collapsed to her knees. She felt Hazel’s hand on her arm. Abi looked up when the pain was gone, but her eyes were not her own. Instead that of a brilliant yellow, ” Yeah… yeah I’m ok…” Abi told her. Where had that come from… she thought to herself?
When Hazel jerked back away from her Abi was stunned, confused almost when Hazel told her. Abi looked at her eyes still shining, ” What?” Abi asked rhetorically. Her fathers warning then filled her mind. The trigger to their family curse. Her eyes flicked to the body…Oh no…Oh God no… She thought. She looked toward the body and realized what this might mean. Blinking her eyes a few times, eventually they faded back to their normal light brown.
She stood and was about to answer her question when she heard sirens in the distance, and blue flashing lights starting to come closer, ” I’ll explain later….”
