Finding this Cassie girl wasn’t exactly difficult so there was no need to walk around town asking every single person where to find this mystery witch. Basically, she didn’t need to draw any further attention to the situation. If people found out there was someone in Mystic Falls who could resurrect the dead all hell would break loose. She promised Kace she wouldn’t get Cassie into any sort of trouble or lead any undesirable people to her doorstep, which meant she didn’t share Cassie’s name with Remzi. She didn’t trust him to ask nicely for his brother to be brought back from the other side. Her plan was to sweeten up this witch, return Raik to Remzi then leave Mystic Falls. Detached herself from someone who was supposed to be just a one night stand, maybe a few weeks of fun at most. Deep down she wasn’t ready to turn her back on him, but she didn’t want to drag him any further into the feud. Everything was a fucking shambles and Leah had no idea where to start with any of it. One dead army man and one dead baby. She was racking up the black marks next to her name, rapidly. There was already plenty there before she died, but since becoming a reaper her moral compass has been stretched even further. From a child who would be just about brave enough to steal a chocolate bar from the shop to a woman who unintentionally took away a life before it had begun. Leah had been riding on the notion it was unintentional since then. There had been moments where she sensed Remzi judged her for what had happened, forgetting that she was doing it all for him. If it weren’t for him she would have never gone after Destiny in the first place. She had been watching her tongue with him since Raik died though, holding back those hurtful comments. The last thing she wanted was to put him back into the humanity-free version of himself because he’d ditch her again. She reappeared outside of Reid’s Pawn Shop just after 7 pm. She carefully tugged on the door handle, but it was locked, as predicted. Leah scanned her surroundings again before teleporting inside the store. She strolled towards the counter, studying various pieces that lay on the shelves. There were some pretty rings that would fit her fingers perfectly, but she didn’t want to set the tone off by stealing. Leah cleared her throat loudly as she approached the counter, “Hello?” She called out, bending down slightly as she observed the other pieces that lay beyond the glass cabinet. There were even prettier rings behind the counter. “Cassie?” She straighten herself up, leaning casually on the counter. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE FELT THE WOMAN’S PRESENCE BEFORE SEEING HER. She assumed it was a witch thing; the tingle that started from the top of her spine and crackled upwards, then exploded into the back of her skull like a mouthful of Pop Rocks. She was in the back sweeping and trying to tidy the magic-y area without disturbing too much. She’d used a spell to fix the front of the store, turning it from the shambles it’d been in back to the regular tidiness it always conveyed. The fact that Mandy was taken made Cassie’s skin itchy, always on high alert now, even if they weren’t open to the public again. The store had looked like what she’d threatened to do when Klaus came back, and Cassie convinced herself she was just being dramatic. Jumping to the worst possible conclusion.
Mandy would be back. Mandy would return, and she’d be okay, and everything would be normal again. Cassie came back. It took a few years of mental anguish, but she did, and she was confident that Mandy would, too. She had to.
Attempting to ignore the tingling sensation━which never worked━Cassie took a slow breath, stilling when she heard the voice. The door was locked. Wasn’t it locked?
Leaning her broom against the wall, Cassie began to move towards the front, pasting on her best Customer Service Smile despite how her hands began to tremble. Her heart pattered rapidly in her throat, and it only got worse when she heard her name. The stranger said her name. Knew it.
For a second, she was terrified. But then she remembered Kace’s warning, that he’d been pumped for info by some reaper lady, and somehow, that didn’t really ease her nerves. Before, she’d had Nicky to help her through this, but now there was no way she could ask him. He had way too fucking much on his plate.
Taking a slow breath, Cassie let it out shakily and walked through the threshold, ensuring she was about a foot away on the other side of the glass display case. “Hi.” Putting on a brave face, she turned her chin up and didn’t smile or cower in fear. “The door was locked, right? Like, you came in another way?” Now that she knew what this was (likely) about, she was sure the door was locked, but it was better to double-check.
“You’re… um, Leah, right? With the Ghost Problem?” A ghost problem Cassie wasn’t sure she could help with. Kace was a lucky instance; Cassie knew him, which probably helped. She had no idea who this guy even was, only that Leah claimed he was a good guy. But everyone thought their dead loved ones were good. And, morally sound or not, it was wrong to mess with the veil between the dead and the living. “Also… doesn’t this go against your whole reaper thing? Like, you guys are supposed to make sure people don’t come back, right? Isn’t that why there’s the whole ‘rogue reaper’ thing? ‘Cause it’s… not… in your job description?” Alright, so she used to pay attention during her witch lessons. There wasn’t much else to do.

Once Raik was back everything would be okay and back to normal for her or so she hoped. Raik would forgive Remzi and they’d go back to being best friends again. The witch was young, but she wasn’t that young. At least she was old enough and experienced enough to bring someone back from the other side. Leah didn’t know that much about witches but she knew it wasn’t easy for them to revive the dead. They didn’t just wave their hands, chant some bullshit and bam the person was back. Leah could hear Cassie’s shaky breathing before she’d appeared out of the back room. She wondered what Kace had actually told Cassie about her. The witch was nervous, so she assumed it wasn’t exactly positive things. “Hey.” Leah retorted, trying to plaster a warm smile on her face. “The door is locked. I can teleport… you don’t need to be scared or anything I’m not gonna hurt you… I promised Kace.” The guy she’d met like twice and had no real connection with but whatever. She nodded in response to Cassie’s comment. Well, technically she wasn’t the one with the ghost problem. It was Remzi but she wasn’t about to split hairs. A smile pulled on Leah’s lips as Cassie pointed out that what she was doing was against her job as a reaper. Again she nodded, “Pretty much… I’m risking everything by trying to bring this person back from the other side but…” She bit her tongue lightly as she stopped herself from saying she was doing this for someone she cared about. Fuck, she was risking everything for Remzi. “I could lose my job over this and if I lose my job I die… but I’m prepared to do that to bring Raik back.” Partially prepared. She wasn’t ready to die, again, but even if Death did find out about this there was a chance she’d claw her way out of the consequences, as always. “I don’t know if you know much about Darachs but they do these fucked up rituals to gain more power which involves killing innocent people… Raik was one of the people they used in their sacrifice and he didn’t deserve that… his brother isn’t coping with his death and I doubt his family will either. He’s one of those fucking golden children who’ve never done anything wrong in their life.” Maybe he’d jaywalked once or twice but that was about it. “So, can you help me?”CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ I PROMISED KACE. NOT, ‘I’M A GOOD PERSON’ OR ‘I wouldn’t do that,’ but ‘I promised.’ Wow, Cassie was fucking in for it, wasn’t she? This was why it was better not to acknowledge the dead outside of a closed setting; they asked for favours and then favours led to… this. Cassie didn’t regret meeting Kace or bringing him back to life, but still. He knew what she could do, and that meant people would go looking for the same treatment.
People like reapers. People who only didn’t hurt others ‘cause they promised.
And desperate people could be scary. But Cassie’s heart ached just a little bit for what this woman was going through, and how she would give her life up for someone else’s. Cassie didn’t know if reaper's lives counted in the balance, but if they did, then one life for another would even it out.
“You must love him a lot. Is he related to you? Or your boyfriend or something?” She was allowed to ask questions, right? Cassie was the one Leah wanted a favour from, so she was entitled to some answers about what the hell she was agreeing to.
Darachs. Yeah, Cassie remembered a bit about them. The evil counter to Druids━at least, that was how it was taught. They took lives for power and, in Cassie’s book (and pretty much the rest of the supernatural world’s), that was a really bad thing. “That’s awful,” Cassie whispered, allowing her heartstrings to be tugged successfully. She didn’t have any siblings, but she knew what it was like to be sacrificed for some sort of weird ritual, and that lent some sympathy.
‘So, can you help me?’
Cassie sighed dramatically. It was a loud, long exhale, and her eyes dropped to the glass counter. It’d been shattered not long ago, but they’d somehow picked up all the pieces and repaired it. There was a metaphor in there about her life, or maybe about Leah’s desperation to fix her own, but Cassie was too tired to put it together. “I can try.” She decided, looking back up at Leah. “I can’t promise it’s gonna work. With Kace, I knew him and it was kind of a fluke━I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to do it again.” She eased forward, hands curling around the edge of the display case, which wasn’t as warm as it used to be when all the lights were on.
“We’ll need to set it up. I need his body and a bunch of supplies━I can put together a list for you. And you gotta be sure everyone else is ready, too. I gotta have his brother there, and some personal items.” Not to mention the things she wanted in return━but it was in poor taste to mention them now. She’d done it for Kace because he was a friend, and even though it felt a little wrong to charge for helping a family, it’d taken a great deal of power out of her. Sometimes, she was scared she’d lose it completely━as if it wasn’t an infinite source to draw from.

She could adopt the sweet innocent act that she played for Cory. Kace had beaten her to the punch by telling Cassie about her and she wondered exactly what he’d told Cassie. He barely knew the real Leah, only the version of her that she presented that evening in the woods. She told him about her dad and a few things about Grey. He was her half-brother and he killed her so whatever he had told the young witch it can’t have been that bad. Her body tensed up when Cassie mentioned the word love, followed by boyfriend. Her mouth ran dry, her tongue sticking to the roof of her mouth as she considered her response. First that Krista chick and now Cassie. Was that the impression she was giving? That she loved Remzi? Impossible. She wasn’t capable of loving anymore, apart from herself. She pulled her tongue away from the roof of her mouth, “Um…” She cleared her throat, keeping her eyes focused on the witch, “He’s not my boyfriend… and I don’t love him… we’re just… friends.” Even the word friend made her feel uncomfortable. Leah didn’t have friends. She had people that she manipulated and used for her own benefits, then when she was done with them she’d pushed them aside, making way for the next idiot to venture into her web. Was Remzi her friend though? She was going out of her way to help him, something that friends did for one another, but there was a chance he wouldn’t have done the same for her. Instead he’d tell her that she was on her own and good luck, just to be a dick. The story worked a treat as Cassie’s comment slipped out in a whisper. She needed Cassie to feel sorry for Remzi and Raik, maybe even for Leah. Once she had the sympathy vote it would be easier to chip away at the witch, eventually convincing her to help. “I can try.” At that moment Leah felt like jumping over the counter and hugging Cassie. Of course, she couldn’t make any promises to her, “I understand.” Although there was no saying how she would react if the plan failed. Would she thank Cassie for her help and head off home? Or would she tell Cassie she had to finish the spell or risk dying? Her face dropped a fraction when Cassie mentioned Remzi. Fuck, she was good at manipulating Remzi but there was only so far for talents went. “Sure… give me the list, I’ll collect the body and his brother… next weekend?” She needed this over soon. “Name your price and we can discuss payment options next weekend.” Her bank balance was near depleted, but she could get money if she needed. ━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ JUST… FRIENDS? JEEZ, CASSIE WAS PRETTY CLOSE TO the other Harvest girls, but she wished her friends would do shit like this for her. Monique was, like, a little more selfish than the rest, but… okay, well, technically she was ancestor-focused, but it sorta seemed selfish.
Aaaanyway. She raised a brow at Leah but then wiped away the curious, slightly-judgemental expression with a small smile. That was fine, then, if Leah wanted to claim they were just friends. That wasn’t really the point here. The point was that her friend’s brother was dead ‘cause of a really shitty circumstance, and Cassie had to help. So she agreed, but she had a buncha conditions, general requirements and ground rules. Leah seemed pretty easy-going, though, which was the total opposite of what Kace had said.
“Okay.” Nodding firmly, Cassie turned and grabbed a scrap piece of paper and a pen. Facing Leah once more, she bent over the edge of the counter and began scribbling a jot-noted list.
- Candles: one green, light blue, dark blue, red, purple + multiple white
- Matches
- White sage
- Body
- Personal items - multiple
- Family member
At the bottom, she added her phone number.
“Okay,” Cassie sighed, standing up straight, though her eyes remained focused on her little list. She skimmed it again, and then handed Leah the paper. “This is good, I think. I’ll need you there, too, like… in the ritual. The warlock I usually draw from is… um, he can’t be there.” Cassie frowned, wondering who she was gonna ask for advice if Nicky was away. He’d help her think of payment, about what was acceptable, ‘cause it wasn’t important when she’d helped Kace.
“And if it works, I’d like… well, if you can find some rare magical items. I have a list of stuff I’m looking for…” Cassie trailed off as she whirled around again, puttering amongst the stuff behind the counter before she found Nicky’s wishlist. Returning in a flurry of anxious movement, she handed that to Leah as well. “It’s long, so at least five of those items. And, um, if you could gimme the list back when you’re done, ‘cause I don’t think we have any copies.” She probably should’ve made one, but there wasn’t a lot of time. And, if Leah ended up disappearing with the piece of paper, Cassie hoped Nicky could list them all again by memory. It was the least of his problems lately.
“Next weekend works. My number’s on the list of stuff I need for the ritual, so, like, text me the address or whatever. It’s better to do it where everyone’s comfortable, and where there’s space… and where we won’t set off any fire alarms.” Smiling sheepishly, Cassie nodded, “That’s everything. I’ll seeya next weekend.”
What the hell was she getting herself into? Again? The ancestors were not gonna be happy.
