You couldn’t spend your entire life wishing for what you didn’t have, what you’d had and lost. It was a lesson Riley was still struggling to hold onto at times. It had been all he’d had for years, but then the beach and the bite that had followed had changed everything. After he’d tried not to look the gift horse he’d been given in the mouth. He had an amazing life now, one that maybe had an expiration date coming up on it, he wasn’t going to wish away a single moment of what he had left. They’d just look back on those moments that had gotten them there fondly, not picking them apart, wondering how they could’ve done things differently to avoid ending up here with the clock ticking down, but it only would’ve destroyed what they had did have now. He just had to keep the faith that one day the two of them would end up back on that beach, the world shrinking down to the two of them again.
Riley sealed that silent promise between the two of them with a kiss, fixing there in the nebulous clouds of their future. He would tell Danny he loved him a thousand times before they got back there, even at moments like this when he knew his boyfriend was gleefully twisting every word. ”I love you despite it,” he teased right back, beaming that beatific smile. Riley hummed, shrugging as he studied the table like a man readying himself to leap off a fifty foot cliff – you knew it was possible, the real issue was figuring out how you were going to do it right. ”How about next time we go on a hike instead? Walking outdoors, that’s my thing.” He shot a grin at Danny. There wasn’t much that could be competitive in hiking up to the Falls, other than trying to avoid the dangerous things out there on the way, but time with Danny was the only part of the equation that really mattered. Riley snorted, the tiny list rolling through his head as Danny kissed him. He’d lose a thousand times over to keep this. He cupped Danny’s jaw, running his thumb over one high cheekbone as he hummed his agreement lightly.
Chances of him actually winning this were low, but there was as much joy in this little tussle as there was in the victory. Eyes still narrow, Riley puffed up his chest, growled into the kiss. His fingers stayed there, anchored in Danny’s waistband, his eyes searching those dark chocolate ones from close up until Danny pulled away and sank another ball. Riley ducked his head, groaning again. ”Oh, I’m pretty sure. I don’t think I’m gonna lose somehow. This is my day.” As much of a lie as he could manage. Maybe it wouldn’t be one if Danny kept missing on purpose. He clucked his tongue, letting his boyfriend know that it was absolutely clear exactly what he was doing. ”A vacation,” he said instantly. ”Just a weekend somewhere. Not running from things, but getting in some real us time before …” He wasn’t gonna say it out loud here. There wasn’t much of a forfeit in it for Danny, but it’d be a way to get what he wanted here without stringing out the planning, wondering if this would just mean that they’d be on their own if something happened. Riley bent over the table, studying the balls carefully before he took his shot and sank one into the far left corner. He beamed as he straightened up to aim again, waggling his brows at Danny like this was proof of his dominance here.

Danny knew that the time he had left was limited, he could feel it, but the truth was that he hated the way that it was weighing down on the people he cared about. Riley was living with it every day just like he was and so were the rest of the pack. There was a part of Danny that had wondered if it would be better for him to leave Mystic Falls behind and face whatever was going to happen alone but he wasn’t sure that he was strong enough to leave them all behind him. He had never thought that he would get to see Riley again after he left Hawaii but their lives had brought them back together and the years they’d had together were the happiest of Danny’s life. As far as he was concerned it was worth putting a target on his back to build the relationships that he had in his life now, he only wished that there could be a different outcome. They were all working hard to find a way to break the curse but right now it felt like it was inevitable that it would catch up with him sooner or later so he knew that he wanted to make the most of whatever time he had with the people he cared about, especially with the person he loved most. “If you say so,” Danny teased as Riley said that he loved him despite it. Danny knew that he didn’t mean it, they were only messing around and he was glad that they were still able to do so. As Riley suggested hiking next time, an amused smile touched Danny’s lips and he shook his head. “Where’s the fun in that?” he chuckled. The friendly competition was what made this most amusing to Danny, he never cared about winning but just being able to spend time with Riley like this was what made the most to him and he leaned into Riley’s touch as his thumb ran over his cheek. It was memories like these that he knew he would take with him wherever he ended up next and he hoped that Riley would hold onto them as well. “You keep telling yourself that babe, it’ll only make it more amusing when you lose,” Danny teased although there was a part of him that was wondering if perhaps he should take it easy enough on Riley that he was able to win this one. He had definitely improved in his skills but Danny had much more practice and that often came in handy. As Riley proposed that they had a weekend away if he won, Danny’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “If we did that I’m not sure I’d want to come back,” he admitted as his eyes met Riley’s. The idea of running away did sound incredibly tempting right now especially as time went on but he knew that he couldn’t do that. “It does sound like fun though. You know I wouldn’t argue with having you to myself for a whole weekend,” he added, watching as Riley lined up to take his shot. “And what will I get if I win?” he countered, unable to deny that he was curious, rolling his eyes playfully at the way Riley moved his eyebrows after potting another ball. It was a wonder he hadn’t eventually choked on his words with all that he was holding back from his parents. Growing up with two people who wouldn’t listen, wouldn’t budge an inch had left him reluctant to open up about how he felt, but Danny had changed that. He’d encouraged him and even when Danny hadn’t actually been standing there at his shoulder through tough moments, Riley had been sure he’d felt him there. Quiet, loving support, a taste of what could be enough to have him pushing when the bite looked like it was changing everything, including him. Now, with everything hanging over them, over Danny, he didn’t want to hold a single word of it back. People were always harping on about doing and saying things now because you were never guaranteed tomorrow and he’d been trying so hard to make sure he did that, even if it was just in joking over pool, or saying for the thousandth time that you loved someone. You didn’t let them go without it all, because the regrets were what would come back to choke you later and he had no intention of living like that.
The grin on his face stretched so far his face ached with it, only cracking when Riley laughed again. Danny knew most of it without him saying a word now, but he’d repeat it all the same. ”You know me too well.” Well enough to know that he wouldn’t change a thing about him. Even if it meant practically losing his shirt this time. Riley clucked his tongue, narrowing his eyes and shaking his head as though he was really going to argue a point Danny didn’t mean. ”I thought were established just how fun that could be the last time we went camping,” he mused. A tent out in the woods – not the safest spot, but somewhere of their own without people buzzing in and out – a weekend where they could just be with one another. That didn’t sound so bad now. It was a plan for the future, though, one for a time when this threat was behind them and they didn’t have to worry about making sure that the pack was close. The last thing he wanted was for Danny to be alone in the fight when that thing came for him. He could only hope that it would be an if, Danny was so certain that the moment the brand had appeared, any hope that it would never happen to him was gone.
Riley clutched at his chest before he looked up at his boyfriend, his face twisting like that had been an actual physical blow. Oh, it was all coming out tonight, blowing up this whole competition until he really was gonna be floored and groaning when the inevitable happened and he lost. ”Ouch! Just you wait til I win. You’re never gonna hear the end of it.” Or he was never going to hear the end of how his pride had run rampant before that fall. That probably meant that they weren’t going to take the weekend away that he was proposing, but it was one hell of a dream. ”You would,” Riley said softly, his amusement fading a little. ”Neither one of us is ever gonna stay away for long now.” Maybe before, but their lives were so enmeshed here, with the pack, with their families. Running would cut them off from those who mattered and sadly, maybe wouldn’t solve a thing. He could’ve ridden his high and potted another ball, but he was turning back to Danny, reaching out to draw him in. ”What would you want from me that you don’t have now?” he asked, his voice low. His eyes dropped from Danny’s, down to his mouth, fixing there for a moment before he sank into another kiss as quickly as he’d sunk the pool ball.

Danny had known the risks when he had decided to embrace his druid heritage, so many of his family who had done so before him had died because of the curse that had been placed on their family generations before and Danny had known that there was a chance that he might follow in their footsteps but the day the brand had been seared into his skin it had all become real to him. Still, he knew that he wouldn’t have changed a thing. He had been able to help Scott and the others out so much and it had given him and Riley the chance to be together and Danny knew that he wouldn’t take that back for anything in the world. Ever since the brand appeared he had felt like he was living on borrowed time and each day that passed felt like both a blessing and a curse – a blessing in that he had another day with the people he loved but a curse that it kept being dragged out. In a way he knew that it would have been kinder for Riley and his friends if the curse had claimed him quicker but Danny was selfish and he knew to make the most of every extra day he had. “Of course I do,” Danny chuckled as Riley said that he knew him too well. It worked both ways, Riley knew him just as well and given his track record before Riley came along, that was something that Danny hadn’t seen coming at all. Riley had changed so much for him and for the first time Danny knew that he had picked the right guy this time but sooner or later even that was going to come to an end and he knew that he could only hope that Riley would be able to keep going when it did. “You mean last time when you made me do the hard work by putting up the tent while you had the easy job of collecting fire wood?” Danny teased, an amused smile touching his lips as he looked over at Riley. Truth be told he hadn’t really minded too much but that hadn’t stopped him teasing Riley about it nonetheless. Right now the thought of hiding away was appealing but Danny knew that he couldn’t hide from this no matter how hard he tried so all he could do was face it when the time came. “Alright, bring it on,” Danny grinned, rolling his eyes at how hurt Riley pretended to be by what he’d said. They were only messing around, of course, and there was a part of Danny that wondered if perhaps he should go really easy on Riley this time and let him win but at the same time his competitive streak would no doubt make that difficult. As Riley said that he would return, a sigh escaped Danny’s lips. “I know. I can be selfish about some things but not others,” he shrugged. Their parents lived in town and they had the pack who were family to them as well so they had plenty worth sticking around for regardless of the dangers they faced. As Riley asked what he would want from him that he didn’t have now if he won, Danny’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment but he quickly snapped out of it when Riley kissed him and Danny kissed him back. “I-,” he began, his voice trailing off before he shook his head. He couldn’t say what he had been thinking, it would be far too cruel to put it out there when Danny knew that he was going to die no matter how much he might want it. “I’m sure I’d think of something,” he said instead, leaning forward and stealing another kiss although this one was deeper than the last. “Now, it’s your turn again.”RILEY PARKER

The jungle should’ve been his place in Hawaii, those lush groves of trees and steep sided volcanoes the sort of places he could lose himself in – in the less scary meaning of the word – for the weeks that they’d spent there. Camping out, poring over the geology while his dad had buried himself in his research, but Danny had changed all of that. He’d been a fish out of water, trying and failing at least half the time, to get out there on a board. Burning his shoulders those first couple of days, until those little reminders to toss on cream had finally started to sink in, trying to spend as much time with Danny as he possibly could. It didn’t matter how much he floundered through what was coming easy to everybody, only that he was floundering through it with Danny by his side, patiently teaching him what was never going to stick. Maybe he should’ve asked him to teach him how to play pool instead.
Danny had no such trouble when it came to camping. He’d gamely headed out into the woods with him here, doing just what he’d asked when he’d suggested Danny put up the tent while he grabbed some wood. Alright, maybe he had shirked the easy work but knowing that didn’t make him smile any less guileless as he hitched his brows and shot it at Danny. ”You mean while you put together our home while I sorted the hearth?” he tried, his words as sweet as his smile. Riley laughed, his nose wrinkling at the memory. ”I don’t remember either one of us complaining too much in the end. That was a good trip. Just the two of us and nobody else around, my amazing fire…” Riley let his voice trail off, pressing a hand against his chest as though he was tucking those memories into his heart. They’d already taken root there, every moment they’d been able to spend together imprinted in his heard, now hoarded with that knowledge that their time together wasn’t going to be endless, it wasn’t even going to be the decades he’d hoped would be the bare minimum.
He guessed that each of their friends would try and take their own moments with Danny wherever they could. Their memories held onto tight, like those they had of all their friends who’d been taken before. Some had come back, and God, he hoped that Danny was going to be amongst them, but there was no guarantee, and so he’d make sure they made as many memories together as possible, before. Was he guaranteed to win and get their time away together? Nope, and Riley knew it even as he wiggled his fingers in the air at Danny, like he wasn’t at least eighty percent sure that he was going to lose. His smile softened at the edges as Danny sighed, his brow furrowing. Riley stepped close, wrapping an arm around Danny, touching his lips to his temple, before they dropped and found his lips. ”You’re not selfish about those, because you’re a good man. I love that you give so much to everybody you care about.” He just hated that in the end it was that loyalty and love that was likely to get Danny killed.
Hearing Danny’s voice break off, Riley drew back just enough from the kiss to look into Danny’s eyes. His hand rose to his cheek, his thumb lightly lifting Danny’s chin to encourage him to open up again. ”You what?” he asked lightly, a small sound of frustration (more amused than anything) rolled out of him as Danny changed the subject. Riley rolled his eyes, returning the kiss all the same. ”I think you already did, but let’s see…” He huffed out a breath as he reluctantly drew back and studied the table again. ”I sink something this shot and you tell me what it was you thought of,” he challenged. Selecting his mark, he let out a slow breath, the cue kissing his chin as he got down low and it glided through his fingers to take the shot. The cue ball clacked into a knot, one of his shooting towards a pocket on the far end of the table. Close … close … Yes! He was already turning back to Danny, his smirk lighting up his face. Now the ball was in Danny’s court – own up or try and chicken out again.

Danny had never really been a huge fan of camping but he knew that Riley enjoyed it so for that reason he went. Truth be told it had been nice to have some time away with his boyfriend so he knew that he would do it again if Riley asked but it was never going to be his first choice. “You can spin it any way you want, you’re the one who wanted to go camping and you still left me with the most difficult job,” Danny chuckled. He hadn’t really minded but it was so much fun to tease Riley about it now that he just couldn’t resist. Danny knew that his time was limited so he wanted to make the most of these moments while they lasted. He had been spending time with his friends as well, Scott and Stiles especially seemed to be taking it hard that they hadn’t found a way to save him yet but they didn’t seem to want to give up anymore than Riley did. Danny knew it would take a miracle for him to get through this but the people he cared about weren’t giving up hope and he knew that he couldn’t either, he had to keep fighting to stay with Riley and everyone else he loved. “Alright, I’ll give you that. The time alone with you was amazing but I’d still rather have our bed than a hard floor,” he said, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at his boyfriend. It was the whole not knowing what was going to come next thing that scared Danny the most. If he ended up on the Other Side then he knew Henrik had brought plenty of people back from there before, including Riley, but if he ended up somewhere else then perhaps he might not make it back to the people he loved. Just the thought of having to say goodbye to them all broke his heart but he knew that that was his reality. Still, he was trying to stay strong for Riley and the others and in doing that he was avoiding his own fears as much as possible. It might not be the healthiest way of dealing with this but it was all he had right now so he knew that he really couldn’t argue with it. It wasn’t long after he sighed that Danny felt Riley’s arm around him and a half smile touched his lips as Riley kissed his temple before pressing a kiss to his lips. “There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you guys,” Danny said gently. He had known the risk he was taking when he had decided to embrace his druid heritage, he had always known that there was a chance that this might happen and he had been prepared to take that risk in order to help his friends but now he had so much and it seemed so cruel that it was now only a matter of time before that was all ripped away from him but it was the hand he had been dealt and he knew that all he could do was try and make the most of the time he had left. There was one thing Danny could think of that he would want if he won the game but he knew that he couldn’t say it out loud. He had already told Riley that if the worst happened and they were parted for good then he wanted Riley to move on and the last thing Danny wanted was to make any of this more difficult for him than it already was. As Riley asked him what he had been about to say, Danny shook his head and kissed him instead. “It doesn’t matter,” Danny assured him, knowing that he was already going to end up breaking Riley’s heart once when the curse caught up with him and knowing that the last thing he wanted was to do that again. “Riley, don’t,” he protested as his boyfriend said that if he managed to sink the shot then Danny had to tell him what he had thought of. Now more than ever he found himself willing Riley to miss but he didn’t, instead he managed to sink the ball with ease and Danny let out a groan as Riley smirked at him. “Clearly I’ve taught you too well,” Danny sighed, his eyes fixed on Riley for a moment before he looked back at the table. “I can’t tell you what came to mind,” he said at last. “I’m hurting you enough already, it wouldn’t be fair,” he said with a shake of his head, still not looking at Riley. “I’ll think of something else, let’s keep playing,” he insisted, hoping that Riley would agree to drop it and Danny could find a way to lose without making it too obvious so he wouldn’t have to voice a suggestion, let alone the one he’d just thought of. Put that way? Honestly, there was no way he could argue with it. Riley’s laugh trailed off with a sigh. ”You’re right, and you’re right,” he murmured. ”Next time we go we’ll switch it up. You can put your feet up and I’ll get the tent popped up.” He knew Danny wouldn’t take him up entirely on his suggestion, both of them were hard workers and were always ready to pitch in. He would take the heavier load and be glad of being able to do it because it meant that his boyfriend was here with him instead of … Riley swallowed back the rush of bitterness that had risen up his throat and the thought that Danny was going to leave him – entirely unwillingly. ”Alright,” Riley said warmly, letting his hand fall away from his chest. ”No more camping. We’ll glamp it up instead. Real beds, just me and you, somewhere amazing.” Hawaii again maybe. A trip back to where it had all started to celebrate it being able to go on because the threat that had branded Danny was long behind them.
He'd promised Danny that he wouldn’t give up his entire future to keep trying to bring him back, but how was he going to give up on all of this? Riley felt his throat clog with the tears that he wouldn’t let show as he held on to Danny, their lips pressed tight until Danny drew back to speak quietly. ”The feelings mutual for everybody, but especially me. I can do all of that because of what you’ve given me, and I can never thank you enough for that.” He could spend an entire lifetime trying to when they managed to break the curse that still lurked beneath Danny’s shirt. Settling his hand over it, Riley squeezed lightly, not trying to remind Danny of its presence, but reassuring himself that it was not taking their future let. His palm slid from there, up to the spot over Danny’s heart, the one he could still feel and hear beating strong. That he was going to take comfort from.
Betting his future on a game had never been a risk he would’ve taken before, but now Riley had done it, his eyes narrowing as Danny skittered away from offering up his part of the bargain. He made a noise deep in his throat, taking the kiss, but not letting himself be distracted from it. ”Oh, it does, you’re not getting away with that one.” Heading back to the table, he amended the bargain, not wanting to force Danny into opening up, but not wanting to lose whatever might’ve been wagered either. His brows were furrowed as the ball clacked into the pocket and he straightened up again, but he shot Danny a smirk all the same. ”I was bound to learn eventually. I learned how to be stubborn too.” Setting the cue aside, he moved close again, his hands coming up to bracket Danny’s face. ”Whatever it is you were going to say, I can take it. Fair or not, baby, I want to know. Please.” If Danny honestly couldn’t get the words out, he’d let it go, but this felt like they were hovering on the brink of something and it was Danny clutching his hand to pull him away from the edge that they might blindly tumble over. Good, bad, heart breaking, whatever was in Danny’s heart and mind, he wanted to know it.

“You do realise I’m going to hold you to that, right?” Danny teased, an amused smile touching his lips as he looked over at Riley. Truth be told Danny had never really been one for camping that much but he knew that Riley loved it so he was more than happy to go along with it to make his boyfriend happy. That was all Danny ever wanted, to make Riley happy and camping out was a sure fire way of making that happen. He knew that he wouldn’t really let Riley do all the hard work, Danny wasn’t the kind of guy who had ever liked sitting around twiddling his thumbs but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t tease Riley about it now. In a way it was a little bittersweet thinking about it because Danny knew that they might not get the chance to go again but they had made some amazing memories while they were there and he knew that he was going to hold onto those. “Now that’s more like it,” Danny nodded as Riley said that they would make sure they had real beds next time. “I’d love to take you back to Hawaii and introduce you to the rest of my family,” he admitted. He knew that they would love Riley and the truth was that it made his heart ache to think that they weren’t going to get to do any of these things. In another life perhaps they would have done but Danny knew the curse was going to catch up with him sooner or later, he could feel it in his bones. He still hoped that Riley and the others would find a way to bring him back but if they didn’t then at least they would all have the memories. One thing Danny knew for sure was that he didn’t want Riley giving up his life if they weren’t able to bring him back. Danny had no idea what happened to Druids when they died or where they ended up but if he didn’t end up on the Other Side then he knew that it wouldn’t be easy to bring him back if it was something that could even be done. He didn’t doubt how much Riley loved him, the guy told him that often enough, and Danny knew that Riley would fight to bring him back but he also knew that there might come a time when Riley would have to accept that it wasn’t going to be possible and he hoped that Riley would keep his word. “You don’t need to thank me, you’ve given me just as much,” Danny assured him gently. Riley had made him realise that he shouldn’t give up on finding happiness and Danny had definitely found that with Riley. Danny’s eyes closed as Riley’s hand found the mark on his side and from there it moved to his heart and Danny let his hand rest against Riley’s, taking comfort from his presence. “Please, just drop it,” Danny pleaded, knowing that he couldn’t voice the thought that had come to his mind. There was definitely one thing that he would want from Riley if he somehow made it through this but if he didn’t then saying those words out loud would only make it that much harder for Riley to move on and that was the last thing that Danny wanted. As Riley potted another ball and smirked at him it was pretty clear that he wasn’t going to do that and Danny shook his head as Riley said that he learned how to be stubborn too. “You didn’t need any help from me with that, you were already stubborn when we met,” he said, unable to stop himself from rolling his eyes playfully despite the way he felt like a lump was forming in his throat. Danny looked away as Riley cupped his face before letting out a sigh. He didn’t want to make it any worse for Riley if they weren’t able to find a way to bring him back but at the same time there was a part of him that felt like Riley deserved to know the truth and Danny finally lifted his gaze to meet his boyfriend’s. “Alright, I’ll tell you,” he said at last, his eyes having searched Riley’s for any sign that he might not want to know and finding none. “You asked what I want from you that I don’t have already if I win and the answer is simple. I want you to marry me,” he said, his eyes searching Riley’s once more as he tried to gauge his reaction. “I don’t know how much time I have left but whether it’s hours, days or whether you guys find a way to bring me back, you’re the love of my life and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”RILEY PARKER

Riley bobbed his head, his smile playing around his lips. ”Oh, I know you will. I’m relying on it.” Because hoping for that to happen meant that Danny would have to be there to make that threat come true. It was a small detail and ridiculous, because one promise would guarantee that he was still going to have Danny with him a year from now or ten, or even fifty, with the two of them heading out into the woods, walking with canes, but it felt like one more thing they were going to have on their side. Their future was going to be a happy one, filled with all of the plans they were making now. He was sure enough of it to feel his heart fill with even more love for Danny, if that was possible. ”The whole family huh? That sounds serious … and amazing. I’d go back there with you in a heartbeat.” This time without his dad hanging around his neck like a crook, just waiting to drag him away when things reached that breathless moment of standing at a precipice with the rest of his life spread out beneath his feet.
He still wasn’t sure if it was just luck, or fate, that had brought him to the very spot on a huge map where Danny had ended up. It was a blessing he hadn’t wanted to look at too closely. They had ended up together, and that was a miracle all in itself. Riley shook his head, looking into Danny’s eyes from so close that he could focus on only them. ”I do, I need to tell you everything – all that love, all the gratitude, every little thing.” While Danny could hear it. If this was it for them then he wasn’t going to be stuck with regrets afterwards. Feeling Danny’s hand close over his, on Danny’s chest, Riley kissed him again tenderly. Danny would probably be tired of the sound of his voice in the end, but he wasn’t going to let a word go unsaid … not by either one of them.
Moments later Danny was trying to get him to change the subject, but he’d opened the door now and Riley wasn’t going to hesitate to step through it. Riley shook his head again, his lips curling up faintly at the corners. ”Sorry baby, you know, I can’t drop anything.” He wished he could, but his brain wasn’t wired that way and at times it had been a curse. This time he refused to believe it was one. Riley held his tongue for a moment, bending back over the table to sink a ball. Humming as he stood, Riley half agreed. ”Maybe I was a little mulish, but you taught me how to stand up for myself, how to asked for exactly what I wanted.” And he was doing that again now.
Danny wasn’t meeting his eye and that started opening up a pit in his stomach. Had he pushed too far? No. He wanted no secrets between them and he knew that Danny had wanted the same thing. They’d do everything to protect each other, but not from one another. ”Thank you,” he whispered as Danny finally met his eye again. He smoothed his thumbs over Danny’s cheekbones, drawing him closer, like he could shut the world out for the two of them. Marry me. Riley dragged a deep breath in, but it almost felt like there wasn’t any oxygen in it. Staring at Danny for a moment, he wasn’t sure he could find the words. ”I want to spend it with you too,” he breathed. ”A day, a year, a century, anything that I can get with you, I’ll take. I love you so much.” The tears were already starting to burn in his eyes as he let out a strangled little laugh. ”Yes,”{/b] Riley said hoarsely. ”Yes, I’ll marry you. Bet or not. You know you’re not gonna get away with not letting it happen if I lose right?” It was too late now, he’d said yes, and that meant there was no going back.

“Sure you are,” Danny chuckled. Truth be told he knew that he wouldn’t be able to just sit around and do nothing while Riley did all the hard work because that just wasn’t his style. Camping really wasn’t Danny’s thing but even so he had gone along with it because he knew that Riley liked it and he knew that he would do the same thing again if given the chance. Being branded had made Danny realise that it didn’t really matter what he did a lot of the time as long as he got to spend time with someone he loved so he knew that he wouldn’t pass up the chance to spend some time alone with Riley like that again. Right now Danny had what really felt like a death sentence hanging over his head and he hated it not just because it felt like it was only a matter of time before he was taken away from everyone he cared about but also because he hated what it was doing to those around him. They were doing their best to stay positive and Danny was trying to do the same but he had seen how worried his family were when he had decided to embrace his druid heritage and he knew better than to take that lightly. As Riley said that meeting the whole family sounded serious, Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “You know I’m all in, I’d love my family to meet the guy I’m in love with.” It had taken them a while to come to terms with the fact that he was gay but his parents had made sure they knew that he was still the same person after they finally came to terms with it themselves. Danny wanted to share everything with Riley for as long as he could. He hadn’t thought that he would ever get to see Riley again after they parted ways in Hawaii but they were drawn back together and he was always going to be glad about that. They’d had the chance to be together and Danny knew that they had both grown during that time so he knew that that was never going to be a bad thing no matter what happened next. As Riley said he needed to tell him everything, Danny’s expression softened. “I appreciate that babe,” he said gently, leaning forward and pressing his lips against Riley’s. “You know I’ll never get tired of hearing it.” He had never been in a relationship like this before, he’d always had a habit of picking the wrong guys and he honestly hadn’t thought that his luck was ever going to change but then Riley had come along and changed everything and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. The moment Danny had hesitated he had known that he was making a big mistake, he knew that all of this was hard enough for Riley without wanting to add to it but he also knew his boyfriend wasn’t the kind of guy who could drop anything. “Not even just this once?” he asked even though he knew that it wouldn’t change a thing. Now he had let on that there was something that he wanted from Riley that he didn’t have now if he won and no matter how much he might want to spare Riley even more pain when the curse finally caught up to him, he knew that he wasn’t going to be able to do that. “You already knew what you had to do, you just needed a little nudge to do it,” Danny said gently. He knew that Riley’s life had never been easy given what his parents were like but he had come a long way during the time they had known each other and Danny really was proud of him for that. That still didn’t mean that he didn’t wish that for once Riley might forget about what he’d said and move on but Danny knew that wasn’t going to happen even as he tried to resist telling him. In the end he knew that he just had to accept that he didn’t have a choice in the matter and he leaned into Riley’s touch as his thumbs ran over Danny’s cheekbones. Danny hated that he had already opened Riley’s world up to so much pain with this curse and even as the words left his lips he knew that he was opening the door to so much more pain when he was gone and Riley was the one left behind to pick up the pieces but Riley had wanted the truth and Danny had known that he couldn’t keep it from him. For a moment Danny wasn’t sure whether Riley was going to say anything but then he spoke and Danny felt his eyes sting with tears. He already knew that Riley wanted to spend the rest of his life with him, that had never been in question, but getting married was a big deal and Danny had been nervous about asking. He knew that it wasn’t romantic in any sense of the word but Riley had asked what he’d wanted and he’d answered so there was no going back now. “Yes?” he repeated, hardly able to believe what he was hearing. “Of course I do. I can’t think of anything I want more than to marry you,” he admitted, his hands cupping Riley’s cheeks as he leaned forward and kissed him passionately even as a few tears escaped and rolled down Danny’s face. “I love you so much,” he breathed. He’d have laughed and said the guy he was going to spend the rest of his life with, but just the thought of the words had Riley’s throat closing up. They were true, he was going to be with Danny until their very last moments. That could be tomorrow though, or the next day, or even an hour from now. The not knowing him was killing him. Riley smiled though, not wanting to start staring at the clock on Danny’s life in case it made those numbers start to roll faster. He wanted them to slow to a crawl, for them have those long, happy lives that they deserved after all they’d both been through. His brows drew together faintly, but he was making that grin brighten. ”Then we’ll do it. I’d love to meet them. I’d say we should do the same with mine. How do you feel about a little trip to Boston at some point?” After this threat was off their back, when things were settled and good and they wouldn’t spend the entire time glancing in the rear view mirror like something horrific was going to catch up with them.
Love, at least the demonstrative kind had never been something his parents had never excelled at. Both of them could write beautiful versions of it, but when it came to showing it to someone other than each other, they’d fail miserably every time. Danny had been the one to teach him what it really looked like, how to give and accept that sort of love. Opening your mouth was part of it, you let people know how you were feeling rather than bottling it all up until it felt like you were going to explode. His love for Danny now spilled out in those soft words and the equally soft kiss Danny gave him. ”I’m glad you won’t, because I plan on making sure you hear it a lot,” Riley promised, drawing back to look Danny in the eye as he said it. He wanted to know that if the worst came to the worst, Danny wouldn’t go without those words being practically imprinted on his bones.
Riley knew that Danny still held some things close to his chest, not wanting to worry or burden the people he loved. He’d have kept holding whatever he’d thought of right there too, but there was no way he was going to let him do that. Their time was likely to be short and he didn’t want to be tearing himself apart wondering what Danny hadn’t been able to say. If it was something devastating, he’d fall to his knees and apologise, but Riley didn’t think that it was. Still smiling faintly, he shook his head. Nope, not even just this once. Riley’s brows rose faintly. ”Come on, tell me, please.” He wasn’t above continuing to beg either. Forget Captain America, he could do this all night. Making a low sound of agreement in his throat, Riley nodded. ”You were that nudge and I knew I could do it afterwards, because in the end you would be standing there right by my side – no matter what happened.” Danny had became his faith, his strength, his very heart.
His thumbs continued their slow, gentle journey over Danny’s face as he leaned into his touch, trying to tenderly guide Danny towards the words he still hadn’t said to him. It wasn’t a surprise that it seemed to work, that came from Danny’s words. Of all the things he’d expected to hear, it hadn’t been that, although he’d always imagined the two of them getting there one day. The tears that shimmered in his eyes seemed to be echoed in Danny’s. Riley tried to blink them away as he nodded almost frantically. ”Yes,” he said on a ragged breath. ”I want to be your husband.” No matter how long their marriage would be. He wasn’t about to doubt that they would get to say those vows to one another. ”I’m still gonna win. Then we’re gonna start planning, because nothing is going to stop this from happening. We’re getting married. I love you too. Forever.” The tears broke for both of them, streaming down their cheeks in the middle of the damn Grill.

Danny’s days were numbered, that much he was certain of, but it just made him that much more determined to make the most of every moment he had with the people he cared about. He could have dropped out of school and done anything that he wanted but he hadn’t done that, he had wanted to go to college and live as normal a life as possible until his family’s curse caught up with him and the truth was that he didn’t regret it one bit. It meant that he got to have moments like this with Riley and he wouldn’t change that for anything in the world. Danny knew that none of this was fair on either of them, they had found happiness and now it was going to be ripped away from them but Danny knew that he would never regret the time he had with Riley. “I say let’s do it. I’d love to meet your family,” Danny admitted. He had never thought that he would get to have this, his taste in men had been awful until Riley came along but the summer romance had turned into something so much more and it had changed Danny’s life for the better. “I like the sound of that. I knew I’d finally got it right with you,” Danny teased, letting his forehead rest against Riley’s as their eyes met. He’d had his heartbroken in the past and with Ethan he’d let him go because he had known that it was what was best for him but with Riley Danny wanted to keep him close. He knew that he would only end up breaking Riley’s heart in the end when the curse caught up with him but he also knew that he could trust Riley to handle it. Danny was doing his best to stay strong for those around him, Riley most of all, and it wasn’t easy but he was doing his best. He didn’t want Riley to worry about him anymore than he already was right now, he didn’t want Riley to know just how scared he was, but there were other things that he wasn’t so good at keeping to himself. “I’ll be by your side for as long as I can be and even after that I’ll still be with you,” he said, letting his hand rest lightly against Riley’s cheek. Danny had made Riley promise that when the time came he would move on with his life and it was a promise that he wanted Riley to stick to but that didn’t mean that Riley couldn’t still carry him with him. There was a part of Danny that had wanted so desperately to tell Riley what was on his mind but at the same time he hadn’t wanted to make things worse for Riley when the inevitable happened. He already knew that it was going to break Riley’s heart to lose him and Danny knew that the people he loved would do their best to bring him back but he wasn’t sure if that would be possible. Telling Riley he wanted to marry him was unfair but Riley had wanted to know and Danny had known that he couldn’t hide it from him. He wasn’t sure what he had expected Riley’s reaction to be but he was stunned for a moment as Riley said yes. “I want that too, more than anything,” he said, leaning forward and kissing Riley deeply. Danny wasn’t sure how long they would get together but he knew that he intended on making the most of every minute of it. “You’re still dreaming if you think you’re going to win,” he teased. “Why do I get the feeling that this is going to be the quickest put together wedding in history?” he chuckled, his hands resting against Riley’s waist as he pulled him close. “I can’t wait to marry you.”RILEY PARKER

Introducing Danny to his parents had tied him up in knots. He’d never come out to them, let alone ever brought home anybody to meet them up until that point. Riley had dreaded just how his mom was going to react. Maggie Parker had never handled a situation without drama in her life. In the end it had felt as though he’d tied himself up in knots over nothing. It had felt like maybe the fate was smiling upon them. Maybe. What was happening now had proved that there could still be nightmares in their future, but he wasn’t about to shy away from it all because he was afraid to take that step together with Danny. His family were going to love Danny the same way that he did. ”We’ll do it then. Maybe near Christmas. Do some shopping, spend time with them all.” Enjoying the future they would have together after this horror show reached its crescendo and they got to coast down the other side again. He wasn’t crazy, he knew that things wouldn’t carry on smoothly forever, but he was going to cling onto the idea that they’d have a smooth ride for a time again. He knew that it hadn’t been easy for Danny before they’d met. After all, he’d gone to Hawaii with the intention of moving on from what had happened with Ethan in Beacon Hills. Then neither one of them had really known that there would be a chance for the two of them to be together forever, it had just been a burning coal of hope in the pit of his stomach as he’d flown away from Hawaii. Glad for every moment of that time they’d spent together, Riley chose to focus on what more they could have, not what they were maybe going to lose out on. ”I was sure about that before I’d even gotten on that plane,” Riley promised, running his thumb over Danny’s cheek. God, he wanted to shake his head and ward off that broken future that Danny was imagining, but Riley couldn’t bring himself to do it. It might’ve been beyond them to stop what was coming, they might only be able to patch it up afterwards, the same way that Ben had when he’d brought him back. His hand dropped to Danny’s chest instead, then covered his own heart. ”You’re always going to be right here. I promise that no matter what happens that won’t change. I’ll love you always.” Moving on or not, nothing was going to tear Danny from his heart. Or the ring from his finger. Who knew how many days they had left before the worst happened. However many it was, it would be enough for the two of them to make that commitment to one another, he’d make sure it was. Riley suspected once the rest of the pack knew, they’d be dragging a priest right to them. Riley smiled, the expression definitely watery with the tears that were breaking free. ”We’ll have that. We’ll get our wedding and a life together.” And maybe it was wishful thinking, but he didn’t even want to voice the opposite, in case saying those words aloud put it right out there into the universe and made it happen. The laugh was definitely tear filled, but it rolled out all the same. ”If there’s one thing I’m dreaming about here, it’s getting married,” he told him. ”Because we’re not going to waste any time. If we get Stiles in on the planning it could probably happen tomorrow. I love you, and I can’t wait to announce that in front of our friends and family. I love you and I can’t wait to be your husband.” He looped his arms around Danny’s neck, drawing him in for a kiss that would seal that promise.

Danny hated feeling like he was living on borrowed time. He had known the risk when he’d decided to embrace his druid heritage, his whole family had warned him that he would be putting his life on the line but he had known that it was worth it to be able to help Scott and the others save Allison. That decision had brought Riley back to him and Danny knew that he was never going to regret it. Riley had said that he would have tracked him down anyway but Danny wasn’t so sure that the guy would have done that. It was only meant to be a summer romance but it had turned into something so much more and even though there was still so much that Danny wanted to do, he knew that he would at least be able to look back on his relationship with Riley without wishing that they had done anything differently. He had finally found an amazing guy after dating a string of guys who were all wrong for him before Riley came along and Danny was happy, happier than he had ever thought that he could be. Riley was doing his best to stay positive and make him believe that the curse wasn’t going to catch up with him but Danny knew better so he just kept on trying to make the most of every moment. “That sounds perfect,” Danny admitted. It saddened him a little to think that they might not actually get to do that but he could still hope that they would anyway. “It gives us both something to look forward to,” he added, an unspoken if I make it through this hanging in the air between them. Danny knew that he didn’t need to say those words out loud, they both knew what was on the line even if Riley might not want to admit it. As Riley spoke again, Danny felt a smile touch his lips. “So was I. I hated watching your plane fly away,” he admitted, leaning into Riley’s touch. There had been a part of him that had wondered what might happen if he had tried to convince Riley to stay but he had known that was crazy. They had only known each other for a short time while they were both in Hawaii but even so the feelings he’d had for Riley had been more intense than any he’d ever felt before. He had gone there wanting to learn about his heritage and get over Ethan at the same time and somehow he had met someone who had changed his life completely. “I know it won’t,” he nodded as Riley said that it was never going to change. “I’m going to love you forever,” he said gently. Even when he was gone Danny knew that wasn’t going to change, his heart belonged to Riley and it always would. “I hope so,” Danny nodded as Riley said that they were going to get to have their wedding and a life together. It felt like wishful thinking but Danny knew that it was something that he was going to hold onto regardless. Asking Riley to marry him now might have been a spur of the moment thing but the idea of the two of them getting married definitely wasn’t. Truth be told Danny had thought about it quite a few times but he hadn’t felt that it was right to bring it up with the threat of his family’s curse hanging over their heads. As it was Riley had practically dragged it out of him but Danny could see the joy in his boyfriend, no his fiancé’s, face and it was definitely worth it. “You and me both. I would say we could elope but I don’t think anyone would forgive us if we did,” he admitted. It he was honest he wanted to do this right anyway, he wanted to have all of their friends and family there to share in the day with them so he knew that they were going to have to plan something soon. “I love you too,” Danny said as he kissed Riley back. “You know, suddenly I’m not so interested in playing pool,” he said as he kissed Riley again. “What do you say we grab some takeout and head back home? You’ll just have to promise me you won’t go back to studying for the rest of the day,” he said as his eyes met Riley’s. RILEY PARKER

His parents were the poster children for not looking back. For them it was always move onto the next town, the next city, the next book, the next play. If something hadn’t go well in the past close your eyes to it and just carry on plunging ahead, because there were bound to be better things around the corner. Riley had never been able to get on with that way of thinking, the past affected everything, how could you just act like it had never existed? That probably meant he’d taken more to heart than he should’ve done, but that thinking had also given him Danny and he was never going to regret that. It didn’t matter if their future was possibly going to be short, because the love that he’d found with Danny was going to mean that he’d fight for every minute of that future he could possibly get.
Even the small things like visiting his family – hopefully without his parents deciding to pay a visit at the same time – were going to be stored away, treasured for later. ”Definitely,” Riley promised. He wasn’t going to start questioning if they’d manage to get to Christmas first. It was all positive thoughts and crossed fingers. ”I hated getting on it. If I thought there was a way I could get away with it I would’ve refused to get on board.” Then he hadn’t seen a way out from under his dad’s thumb though, not until he’d finally hit eighteen and then his parents couldn’t do a damn thing about it. In the end they’d found their way to one another without it. Death hadn’t separated them for long once, he had his hopes that it wouldn’t again and if something did happen, the love he felt was never going to change. Riley smiled softly, drawing Danny into another kiss. ”I want to hear that every day of my life,” he admitted hoarsely. And if he couldn’t, he’d still feel it, the memory of those words etched into his heart.
His faith was going to carry him through what might be a rough future. He was going to believe that they’d have their wedding, that they’d stand in front of their friends and families to make vows to one another. ”I know so,” Riley said firmly, his smile still in place. If Danny was determined to keep a smile on his face, then it was working. ”Definitely. I think Stiles would probably sulk for life if he couldn’t be best man for one of us.” Having the pack there was an absolute necessity, they’d become family as much as friends. Even though their whole night – their whole lives – had changed the minute Danny had proposed, he would’ve stayed and played pool all night if that was what his fiancé had wanted, but a part of him was glad as Danny brushed the idea of carrying on playing. Riley smiled into the kiss, nodding when he finally drew away. ”I’d say that sounds more like a celebration to me. No books, I promise. Just take out, maybe a bottle of something sparkling, and my future husband. God that’s never gonna get old.” Riley drew back just long enough to wave one of the waitresses over for them to be able to order.
