Lawrence wasn’t wholly convinced that Penny was a dragon. Firstly, Kit had never met her and his guess was purely speculative. Secondly, he could just be winding Lawrence up for leaving him to cover his shifts. Either way, he wanted to confront Penny about this. If she was a dragon that was a big deal, given she could breathe fire and fire was deadly to vampires. He was still somewhat convinced she was a snake, but there was no sign of the pack she would have apparently been travelling with. She struck him as a loner. Probably stayed working late at the museum because she had nothing else to do with her time, which is why Lawrence decided to arrive just before closing. The security guard didn’t put up much of an argument after Lawrence asked him very nicely to let him inside. The man was even kind enough to tell Lawrence exactly where Penny would be. Working in an office on the second floor, as predicted. It was a Friday night and here she was still working. He threw a few dollars in the donations box on his way in. He paused at the butterfly section for a brief moment, remembering how Penny punched him after he was nice to her. He spent the rest of the evening trying to understand why she punched him. Women liked men being nice to them, right? Apparently, Penny didn’t. It had been over six months since Penny slipped the ring from his finger with ease, but part of him was growing accustomed to this nocturnal life he was now living. Sleeping most of the day and heading out once the sun had set. Mystic Falls wasn’t exactly the perfect place to be nocturnal though. He would have been having a better time somewhere like Vegas or New York. Not a small town where everything closed at a reasonable hour. At least he had the bar though. A place where he had the keys to and could drink until just before the sun came up before rushing back to Teddy’s apartment. Just in time to see Teddy waking up to take Julian to school. Kit armed him with some information about dragons, but again, he didn’t exactly trust the wolf. It was apparent that he had some dislike towards vampires. So that soft spot he spoke about could be some way of activating her true form, then he’d be fucked. The only reason he came to the museum was to tell her he knew what she was since she had refused to tell him so far but it explained why she was such an angry little person. Lawrence headed up to the second floor, spotting Penny alone in one of the side rooms. He could hear the security guard downstairs locking up the building after ushering the final few customers out. He strolled over to the open office, stopping at the door. “Dragon.” He stepped inside, knocking the door stop out, letting the door swing shut behind him. He didn’t want that security guard listening in on their conversation. “Now I understand why you stole my ring.” Well, he didn’t really understand it but it gave some reasoning to her actions. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ SHE’D WOKEN UP AN HOUR AGO. It was still light out when she left her apartment for work, so Penny was yawning on her way in, but she was happy about this shift━it was better than coming in the early morning. Not only was it more in tune with her opposite circadian rhythm━that’s what doctors nowadays called it━but there were fewer people, which was always a plus.
Sitting on the floor, Penny sorted through the box of rocks Winter had already gone through as a sort of pre-screening. These were the ones they were considering for loans from multiple organizations, and Penny had already denied the ones Winter claimed were bullshit. How easily she trusted the girl would’ve bothered Penny if she was old enough to still care about things like that. This was work, and emotions had no place here━it was simply a terrific partnership, fulfilling for both of them.
Briefly, she thought about Lawrence’s ring and longed for it, where it was still tucked inside her office’s safe. She hadn’t moved it to her horde just yet; she still liked to take it out and admire it on occasion.
And, as if the thought alone summoned him, her worst (and best) possible fears collided. Like the obnoxious asshole he was, he kicked out the doorstop, effectively trapping them in there together. Penny would’ve loved to be stuck in here with just the rocks, but of course Lawrence had to be a part of the deal, too.
“No, wait━!” Penny strained, pointing at the door just as it slammed shut. Turning her glare up at the vampire, she narrowed her dark eyes, teeth clenched together. She didn’t know how he found out what she was, but she wouldn’t let him hold the proud feeling of besting her for very long. Warmth gathered in her throat, and Penny nearly crushed the precious rocks she was handling with microfiber cloths. “I’m glad you finally figured it out: that you’re a completely unobservant idiot. Now we’re locked in here. The door stop was there for a reason, Lawrence.”
Handling the rocks with more care than seemed natural for how angry she was, Penny gently placed them back in their cushioned containers and flung up from where she was sitting. She could break the lock and pull the handle right off the door, but that would likely set off the alarms━if not, then the cameras would surely capture her unnatural strength. “And there’s no one here at this hour. God, I was so happy to be in this office and away from everybody for the night… you really ruin everything, don’t you?” She shoved past him and tugged on the handle as if that would change anything━as expected, it was still locked.
Deflating over the door handle, Penny’s shoulders sagged forward in a sigh. Eventually, she turned back to Lawrence, but her defeated expression had morphed into rage. “Have you come here to cry about your ring again?” She hissed, “Because great, go ahead, you have all the time in the world now. Just be aware that I’m perfectly able to tear your head from your body━and more than happy to do it, too.”

His fiancee had been fed the same stories like everyone else. Lawrence died in a hunting accident. His body was too mangled to be seen by anyone. The story had holes in it from the start, but his dad was there to corroborate the story, telling everyone he held his son’s hand as he drew his final breath. It was an Oscar performance from them so of course Grace believed it all. The wedding dress didn’t go unworn though as she fell in love with another boy in the coven. It was a real relationship rather than one which had been forced on her by her parents. Once the pair were united her family had been promised great power. Perhaps Penny had done him a favour by stealing the ring. An opportunity to finally shed the person he was before and completely cut ties with his old life. A piece of jewellery that was a constant reminder of what he lost. Something to constantly remind him of his parents. Any gratitude he felt for his parents making him the daylight ring was lost when he arrived in Calgary alone. But not being able to walk in the sun sucked. All that aside he was ready to gloat about the fact he found out Penny was a dragon. He was feeling pretty proud of himself when he stepped into the office and announced his discovery. As always, she didn’t look happy to see him, even more so when he let the door slam shut. He stumbled to one side as she pushed past him trying to open the door, telling him he’d ruined everything, which was a bit of a push. “Why didn’t you bring the keys with you?” He hadn’t ruined anything. She was the one sitting in a room without the keys to unlock the door if it were to shut. He listened carefully to see if he could pick up anyone in the area, “Oh yeah. I think your security guard has just gone home… is he fat? His heart is beating way too fast for someone who's walking.” After that there was silence outside, but he could hear Penny’s heart thudding away in her chest. She was furious. Lawrence moved past Penny, carefully, placing his hand on the door handle to give it a tug. “Solid door.” He muttered as he turned back to Penny, “No I haven’t come to cry about my ring. I found someone to make me a new one.” His thumb ran over where his ring once was, “I’m picking it up tonight.” He quickly added, realising there was no ring visible on his ring. “And yes I’m aware you can tear my head from my body and you can transform into some huge dragon who breathes fire.” He retorted in a bored tone. He pulled his phone out of his pocket, “I’ll call someone.” He glanced down at his phone before letting out a loud sigh, “Do you have any signal?” He looked back up at Penny. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ WHY DIDN’T SHE BRING━OH, PENNY WAS GOING to murder him. It would cause more trouble than breaking a door, and her sister would likely be very upset, but Penny thought it was a reasonable response. If Cassandra ever met Lawrence, she’d understand.
… Actually, she’d probably befriend the vampire. She might even lecture Penny about being nicer and making friends━as if she were still a small child. Penny, however, would not befriend Lawrence. She’d hold off on murder for as long as possible, but if he kept getting in her way, then she’d likely lose all patience and just go for it.
“They don’t give the keys out━this is a specialized room for precious artifacts. If you… God, why do I bother?” Penny released an exasperated breath and pushed the heels of her palms into her eyes, trying to breathe through the desperation and rage coursing through her. He came closer, and she thought, Here’s my chance; I can be rid of him now. I’ll still be stuck, but at least I won’t be stuck with him.
She didn’t answer him about the security guard, and only pulled her hands from her eyes to snap, “Break that door, and I’ll break you.” With a fiery glare, one that had the telltale warmth gathering in her chest again. There would be nothing left of him but a pile of ashes. No one would know.
Teeth gritted, Penny walked back to her box and plopped down on the floor again, beginning to (carefully) rifle through it. If she could just touch a few rocks, she’d settle down. There was nothing like rolling a piece of gold between her fingers. “‘Picking it up tonight,’” Penny snorted, her voice suddenly cool and level as she plucked a small chain from its case, handling it with a microfibre cloth. “No, you’re not. Not unless, by some miracle, somebody comes back tonight. And we all know you have terrible luck.” A sly smirk pulled up one edge of her lips, dark eyes focused on the chain. Discreetly, Penny slid a thumb over the cloth and touched the gold to her skin, sighing slowly like it was a religious experience. For her, it was.
Again ignoring the mention of her being a dragon, Penny kept her gaze on the chain. “No, this room is thoroughly sealed, and the museum’s structure wasn’t designed to allow in signals that didn’t exist yet. Plus, it’s better to keep children off their phones. We’re stuck. Now, stop talking━if I have to be here for hours, it’ll save your life to keep the yapping to a minimum. Literally.” Turning her head his way, Penny let her face morph into the halfway point between dragon and human. Glimmering silver scales replaced her pearly-white skin, and, when she blinked, her eyes were suddenly a piercing yellow colour, with vertical reptilian pupils.
Staring for a moment, Penny blinked and it all disappeared, leaving her to turn back to her golden chain, smirking wider this time. She hoped to scare him into sitting down and shutting up, but Lawrence didn’t seem all that intelligent, so she assumed it wouldn’t work the way she wanted.

Lawrence was a self aware person. He knew he had the ability to rub people up the wrong way and get under their skin, but what the fuck was wrong with Penny? He was simply existing in that stupid cramped room and she was ready to decapitate him and for what? Letting the door close. It was hardly something that warranted this level of anger from the small dragon. Spending a few hours with him wasn’t the worst thing in the world. Instantly he threw his hands up in the air, “Duly noted. I will not break the door.” Again, why the anger? It was just a door and one of them could have easily ripped it off its hinges. He didn’t want to admit it out loud, but Penny could probably do it easier than he could. He watched carefully as she moved back towards her desk, bracing himself for an attack from her. Waiting for her to morph into whatever a dragon looked like in today's society. He just couldn’t picture it. Her body full of scales with massive wings that could carry her anywhere in the world. The same petite blonde he thought was sweet when he met her, but turned out to be one of the biggest thorns in his side. She was on one side whilst Phoebe was on the other, although Phoebe’s dug a little bit deeper given she was a sister trying to keep her brother in line. There was a little jump of glee in the pit of his stomach as Penny believed his story about picking up another daylight ring that evening, which wasn’t complete bullshit. He could easily hurry home and ask Teddy to make him one, after finding a ring of course. “You’re such a positive person.” A ray of fucking sunshine. No doubt her glass was half empty all the time. He narrowed his eyes into slits as her face formed those familiar silver scales, but this time she had matched yellow eyes to match. “You’ve made your point… you can obliterate me to ash in a matter of seconds.” Now he was letting her get under his skin even more so when she said they’d be stuck in there for hours. He didn’t have hours to spare, he had a seat at the bar with his name scribbled across it. The thought of the bar had him itching for a strong alcoholic drink. He didn’t even want to ask Penny if she had anything stashed in one of the drawers, knowing she’d probably give him some condescending lecture about how alcohol can’t be kept in the room because it’ll upset her precious rocks. He pushed his phone back into his pocket, as he slid down the wall to sit on the floor near the door. Away from Penny. Lawrence managed to remain somewhat quiet for thirty minutes, but it was impossible not to grow bored. Penny had her rocks to play with whilst he was left staring at a blank ceiling dreaming about the glass of whiskey he would have later. “So… you are a dragon then?” He titled his head towards her, ready for her to scold him again. “I mean it’s pretty dope… it beats being a boring old vamp like me, eh.” In a town full of vampires with one lurking around every single corner. He came to Mystic Falls for a break from being surrounded by vampires, only to be employed by Hector. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY WAS GLAD TO HAVE MADE HER POINT. SHE was glad Lawrence still had some listening skills, or at least half a brain to receive the threat and absorb it constructively. Not that she wouldn’t reduce him to ash if she had to, but Penny wasn’t really interested in murder, nor did she want to screw up her sister’s chances of settling in this stupid town. There would be nothing left of Lawrence, but there were cameras and witnesses that would’ve tracked his journey to her. That would surely ruin things.
If she’d been alone here, perhaps she would’ve killed him. Penny liked her job in the museum, but it wasn’t the only one in the world, nor was the school she attended. She could’ve left him in the dust (literally), but that wouldn’t be so smart (it wasn’t as if Penny’s choices weren’t generally impulsive, but still).
Surprisingly, Lawrence took the cue to sit in his corner and shut up. Penny thumbed the gold chain for a while, breathing in the warmth it brought, centring herself (despite the nuisance). Eventually, she slipped it back in its box and moved on, pulling out the small set of jewels that sat in their own, organized container of six felt squares. A gem sat in each, remnants from a crown. They hadn’t been preserved very well by the time they were inducted into their first exhibit, but Penny would likely fit them into a replica crown for display. Again, she sneakily slipped a thumb over the twinkling rocks, and then reached into the main box to fold her fingers around the replica. It might’ve been fake, but it was still solid gold, and holding it sent a shiver up her spine.
Just as Penny was slipping into the pleasant silence with her lovely, precious minerals, Lawrence’s grating voice interrupted her moment. Halfway through a satisfied sigh, Penny felt her throat tense, locking the rest of the breath inside. It burned up in that same fire in her chest. Only her eyes darted to Lawrence.
“Anything is better than being a vampire.” She muttered, though she didn’t sincerely feel that way. There was quite a lot worse, she could think of a few species off the top of her head, but the truth didn’t matter when she was talking to Lawrence. Actually, not much did. Especially not Lawrence.
Penny pulled her hand off the crown and found a ring instead. A wedding band from the seventeenth century, kept safe in its own container. Lifting it from the box, she popped open the smaller one and grinned at the ring. Solid gold and engraved with professions of love in Early Modern English. Penny wasn’t nearly rich enough for something like this in one of her many marriages, but it felt familiar.
Maybe it was familiar to him, too. Cutting her gaze to Lawrence again, she smirked, “This ring’s a lot nicer than yours was… but they’re both wedding bands, right?” The expression on her face said she already knew the answer. “You told me it was a gift from your parents…” Her voice was almost sing-songy. “... It’s not very polite to lie. You were supposed to get married, hm? Then you became… this, and your parents made you leave because they couldn’t stand that their child became a monster.” Penny tipped her chin up an inch, still smirking, as if this was all just a game. “Then you really were one.” Slowly, her eyes returned to the ring, and she saw flashes of her own marriages in it. Lawrence could’ve been another one of them, though he’d escaped death. But none of Penny’s husbands had joined the undead… at least, she didn’t think so.

So they fell into silence, for a while. It was when his dad would be concentrating on a spell whilst he and Phoebe would stand observing. Lawrence was able to remain quiet, most of the time, but Phoebe always grew bored quickly and started pestering her brother. Soon the pair would crack and their dad would tell them off for being so distracting. What did he expect though? They were just children who would rather have been outside playing with their friends, not watching their dad mutter Latin words, but apparently weekends were for playing and weekdays were for learning. It didn’t seem fair that all the other children weren’t expected to learn every single spell written in their family grimoire. Just like Phoebe as a kid, he grew bored of the silence and broke it. His lips parted as he was about to list off a number of species that were way worse than vampires, but they fell shut again as he realised Penny would just launch into more insults about him and about vampires. It wasn’t worth it. She wasn’t worth it. Instead he fell quiet again, eyes flickering up to the blank white ceiling above them. He couldn’t even drift off to sleep to help the time pass considering he had only just woken up to start his day. There was no sign of alcohol in sight either. Penny broke the silence this time though, passing comment on his daylight ring. His wedding ring. His gaze shot back to her, a small frown on his face. He rattled around in his memory, trying to remember their past conversations, but there was no way he would have shared something so personal with a one-night stand. It looked just like any other ring that with no obvious sign it was a wedding ring, but she knew it was. It was written all over her smug face, but she continued on, reeling off his past like it was some type of joke. His face fell instantly as he found himself lost for words for a moment. It was on the tip of his tongue to deny it all, but he was growing tired of her bitchy games. He wanted to ask how the fuck did she know all this, but he knew that would only feed into her ego. She would probably cackle like a little witch and tell him that was her business, not his. Fuck, he hated her and it was only now he realised this. “I didn’t lie. It was a gift from my parents… they made it into a daylight ring for me.” He responded. The band was part of a pair though. One for him, one for his wife, expected she never reached that title. He shuffled slightly, pressing his back against the cold wall as he looked up at Penny, sitting all high and mighty behind her desk. “Well done. You’ve done your research.” Like he was one of those stupid fucking rocks that lay in front of her. He pulled himself to his feet, strolling over towards the edge of her desk. Every fibre in his body was burning to grab her by the throat and throw her against the wall, but he wasn’t on a suicide mission. “Yeah, I’ve done things I ain’t proud of but you know what’s at the very very top of that list?” He placed both hands down on the desk, glaring at her with nothing but hatred behind his eyes, “Fucking you.” PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY WAITED WITH INTEREST, THOUGH SHE didn’t look over, and simply stayed smirking mischievously at the ring in her hand. She could imagine Lawrence turning red from where he sat a few feet away, buzzing and ready to explode like a firework. Would he actually do anything, though? The last time, his so-called ‘explosion’ ended in a fury of heat and passion, and when he’d booked a tour to seemingly irritate her all day, he’d kissed her. He wasn’t as angry that time, but his plan had started as a way to get back at her for stealing his ring, had it not? Lawrence was awful at this big, scary vampire act.
Daylight-ring, shmaylight-ring. He withheld the full story on purpose, and though Penny couldn’t blame him, it was interesting to see how Lawrence would react now. This wasn’t exactly fair, and she should’ve known how it felt━Finn liked to rub her long string of dead husbands in her face━but that didn’t stop Penny. He’d come in here to yell at her, and now they were stuck, so she would make the most out of a bad situation. Toying with Lawrence would be a fun pastime, and perhaps he’d think next time before trying to confront her.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t as angry as she’d hoped. Penny expected Lawrence to lash out and cry like a small child, but instead, he’d risen from his spot and walked calmly to her. Penny still didn’t look at him, keeping her dark eyes on the ring she held, slowly dragging her thumb across the golden edge.
As soon as he’d finished, Penny’s eyes ticked sharply up to Lawrence’s and narrowed. It stung, somewhere deep down where she still felt things, but perhaps not as much as he would’ve liked. And it wasn’t about him, either. It was about Penny’s long history with men she couldn’t keep, and the pain she felt each time she lost one. How could one stupid, baby vampire regret her?
He didn’t. She knew better than that. Penny calmly returned the ring to its encasing and stood, nearly brushing against Lawrence as she rose to meet him face to face. The edge of the desk was between them, but Penny easily shifted to mitigate that, never breaking eye contact━not even as she stuck her fingers in his waistband and tugged him into her.
The tip of her nose nearly touched his from their sheer proximity, and she could feel his breath, surprisingly warm, on her skin. Slowly, a grin spread on her lips, replacing her previously-blank expression.
“Then do better next time.” Her voice was half-whisper, half-hiss, eyes flicking down to his mouth and back up again. She wanted to kiss him as much as she wanted to punch him, but stayed utterly still, waiting for his next move. He’d bend to it again, to her━Penny was sure of it. And she wouldn’t be the one to kiss a weak fucking vampire and get rejected; she wouldn’t give him that kind of power.

He couldn’t work out exactly why Penny irritated him so easily. Yeah, she was a bitch and threw insults at him, but there was something about the way she spoke and the way she held herself that boiled his blood. He knew she was some kind of a pro at getting people to lose their temper. He hated that she knew something so personal about him. Something that he tended to keep a secret, sharing it with only those he cared about, and now she was using it to mock him. There was a quick surge of happiness when Penny’s eyes darted towards him, as though his insult worked. He could have launched into a whole speech, ripping her to shreds by telling her she was the worst person he’d ever slept with, which was a complete lie. She was nearing the top of the ranks. There was something intoxicating about her. Something that made him want to keep going back for more. He needed to break that cycle because he was too busy being stuck in the exact same cycle with Hannya. He couldn’t help that he was ridiculously attracted to women who were terrifying. The ones who could crush his skull without even breaking into a sweat. Those were the ones he wanted to bring pleasure to. He tensed up slightly as she slipped her fingers into the waistband of his jeans, pulling him towards her. Lawrence refused to look away, keeping his eyes locked on her as excitement flushed his body. It was a challenge on who was going to break first and Lawrence was struggling to resist. The door was locked anyway, there was nowhere for him to go. Whenever it came to Penny there was always a chance she was going to kill him if he kissed her, but it was always a risk he was willing to take. It added to the thrill. But yes, he was going to break first. The man had no willpower when it came to Penny and he was keen to feel her lips against his. He wanted, in fact, he needed, to explore every inch of her body again. He brought his right hand up, brushing his thumb across her lips softly. “I’ll stay out of your way after tonight.” Lawrence was certain it would be the last time he stepped foot into the building and certainly the last time he spoke with Penny. She could keep his daylight ring because maybe it was time he finally shed that last piece of his human life. His hand dropped as edged down towards her quickly, placing his lips against her, and wrapping his arms around his to bring her closer. Seconds later their clothes were discarded all over the room and he had Penny pressed up against the wall. They had hours to kill before someone would find them. Doing something was better than sitting on the floor in silence. PENNY BARTLETT - da end
