Most people didn’t have a smooth path through life. It might’ve appeared it on the surface, the good things that came to them shining bright enough to eclipse the tragedies that struck them all just the same. Noah knew that he looked like one of those folks who’d just skated his way through without any of the darkness clinging to him, but he’d taken his hits just the same. Blessedly the worst hadn’t happened to him, but he wasn’t blind enough to think it never would just because he still had his parents, his sister … his wife.
Hearing the man before him speak, Noah knew this wasn’t the time to bring that up. It would’ve been rubbing the guy’s nose in it unnecessarily when he was working to help pick him up, not do the opposite. Tossing his memory back, Noah remembered how it’d felt when she’d run from him. That’d been before the proposal, before the years together. Still scarred by what had happened with the pack that had been holding her, she’d bolted. Months later she’d turned back up on his doorstep, shivering, blind to what was happening right in front of her until she’d got his sister’s name out and that scream had come. Fear knotted tight in his stomach despite him knowing they were both safe now.
He tapped his fingers lightly around the fork in his hand, glancing down at his food. ”And you’re still trying to protect her from who you were?” he asked lightly. ”I’m not gonna bullshit you and say you’ll be able to patch your marriage back up, but have you thought about reaching out to her to see? At least then you’d know for sure.” There was a chance his wife was pining for him the same way he was her, especially if she had no idea where her husband had gone. It was always those holes in your life that tore at you the most, screaming at you to fill them. At this point he couldn’t imagine walking away from the life that he’d spent decades building up.
Noah made a low sound in his throat, nodding with a little more understanding about how important work was to the guy now that he knew it was all about trying to distract him from what had happened to his wife. He picked at his fries, nodding slowly at the man as he leaned back in his seat, obviously finished with his meal already. ”I guess that makes working 24/7 a little more palatable,” he agreed. He still wouldn’t have done it, but their lives were in very different places.
The thought of the venison still wasn’t sitting well with him. Noah eyed his burger again for a long moment before he took another large bite. He’d definitely stick to the other red meats. ”Maybe some time in the future,” he half agreed. The corner of his mouth half listed. ”I’d have to see if my wife or sister would be interested in it. You know what it’s like, I guess, juggling different palates with you live with someone. How long has it been since your marriage broke down?” It was nosy perhaps, but the guy had seemed willing to talk about it. He wasn’t exactly a marriage counsellor, part of what he did was about encouraging communication though.

In the city of fools, I was careful and cool but they tore me apart like a hurricane.
Carlton was beginning to notice that he chatted with the guy for a very long time. This was extremely rare for him to do. You wouldn't believe he was the same guy if you bumped into him months ago. A scared man who wanted to avoid others and keep them safe, it was a very lonely life. But the hurt about the way he ended and pushed his own wife away was the worst. He missed her comfort, missed her love and missed her company. He did anything to try and get her back but it was useless. She could have remarried with family now.
you need their input too. I am not too hard to find if you need some top quality venison Carlton wasn't the type to push stuff on others he was just happy to give advice to someone if needed when I first got here I wouldn't even sit in the open with others. So this is a great process for me. I was doing a lot of stuff to protect others, even the strangers now he got more control over his condition and understood it more. Holding onto the memory of his wife as his anchor. It took him a while to figure that out, but since then he has been able to get rid of the boring job In fact I am thinking of changing jobs. Working nights can be so exhausting and lonely, even though I enjoyed it at first. I am ready for a change now he then took another sip of his drink
to be honest I can't remember. But I can safely bet that it long enough that she could have found someone new, re marry and even have a family he took another sip of his drink as even though it hurt for him to admit those possibilities, he was holding on that she too was hoping he would return back or even make the call. do you think I should call her? He asked him, since he still had her number and he just hoped that she never change the number, it's all he could do at this point

”Maybe one day,” Noah murmured. It seemed as though there were more important things going unsaid here. With the way they travelled his diet wasn’t likely to change any time soon and he was fine with that. The only things he’d ever focused on in life were family and the work. His dad might end up remaining druid for the pack in Boston for another forty or fifty years, which meant that his place was in towns like this, trying to do what he could for people. Once things were resolved he’d be back on the road and it would be someone else sitting here in the Grill, offering up advice to random strangers.
Noah worked his way through his food, swiping fries through ketchup, decimating the pile of them as Carlton admitted that the town had changed him. He glanced around the Grill, trying to picture him as he’d been. They said leopards didn’t change their spots, but he’d seen plenty of people turn their lives around over the years. ”That’s pretty altruistic,” he murmured. ”I’m sure it was appreciated, even if people didn’t know what was going on.” Some here wouldn’t hear the subtleties to the conversation but Noah thought that maybe Carlton’s change had been something he’d had to get used to, something he’d settled into. Most who ended up in the supernatural world had gone through the same thing.
Sandy brows rose as Carlton admitted he was thinking about changing his job. ”Really? Maybe a change would be for the best. I dunno how you managed it. It really wouldn’t be my sort of thing.” Then again, his work didn’t really work to a set schedule – other than his teaching, of course. There’d been plenty of times when he’d dragged himself into a classroom after just an hour or two’s sleep because something else had come up the night before. It was probably an indication that he should make a choice too, but Noah wasn’t sure he was ready to set aside academia. Maybe if he ended up emissary for a pack, that seemed a long way off for now though.
The pile of fries had shrunk, most of his burger gone now. A glance at the clock above the bar showed that the place was probably gonna start filling up again soon. His wife would probably be home soon, like so many others in town getting back after work. ”Maybe,” Noah said, shrugging slightly. He might’ve been able to advise about a lot of things, but he wasn’t about to call himself an expert on relationships. His hadn’t had the most conventional start. ”You won’t know unless you reach out. I’d say if you’ve got her number, then give it a try. If she has moved on at least you’ll know. Maybe then you can do the same.”
Swallowing down the last couple of bites of his burger, Noah glanced around for the waitress for the check. It was time he got back to his own family, putting in the work that it took to stay together under the difficult circumstances everybody went through. ”Let me pay for that,” he offered, gesturing to the guy. He caught the waitresses eye at the offer, smiling at her. ”Hey, can I get both checks?” His wallet was already out of his pocket, a few bills being counted out.
