She didn’t even need somewhere to rest her head at the end of the day. All those pesky human needs had been taken away from the moment she became a reaper. Her stomach was never empty and her body never craved a glass of water. It was marvellous. It still didn’t stop her from drinking countless espresso martinis and eating pizza though. She did however need somewhere to sort all her belongings. Stacks of skimpy dresses with heels to match. All her makeup and beauty products. The first couple she was crashing with decided to sell their house suddenly, which was pretty selfish of them, leaving Leah to find somewhere to put everything. She was pretty surprised to find out Hannya had an apartment in town. Another being with no need for sleep who was willing to share her space with Leah. The next minute Remzi was in the apartment as well. Temporarily, she made sure of that. Needless to say he could no longer stay at the hotel. A place filled with too many harsh memories, even for Leah. Raik’s dead body slumped against the body whilst his soul stood in the corner looking confused as hell. This whole thing started with their dad and Leah’s mom, but somehow the feud was passed on to the children. At least she hadn’t gone after innocent people, involving them in this family argument, until the evening in the warehouse. Leah had justified it to herself by now though. She didn’t mean to kill their baby, it was an accident, therefore she wasn’t hundred percent to blame for it. There was still a part of her buried deep deep down that felt guilty, but she refused to acknowledge that because then she’d find herself on a slippery slope. Fuck, if only she could turn off her emotions like Remzi. So she was doing the second-best thing: ignoring what she did and focusing on Raik. Kace had given her a lead on some witch though. A piece of important information that had been lost during the chaos recently. Remzi was barely around out and about doing fuck knows what and then there was the whole thing with Destiny. Also she needed some kind of plan to get this witch on their side and agree to help them. Leah lay in Hannya’s bed, her eyes closed but not asleep. That annoying ring kept going off in her head, but she’d been ignoring it for hours now. It was a call someone else could get. Her eyes flickered open when she heard banging around the kitchen. A place where most of the cupboards lay bare and the fridge had no food, only bottles of wine. With a heavy sigh, she pulled herself out of bed, expecting to see Hannya in the kitchen when she emerged from the bedroom. Someone who could help alleviate her tension, but instead she saw Remzi. “Morning.” She strolled out of the bedroom, taking a seat at the island near the kitchen. “I might have found a way to bring Raik back by the way. I met a guy the other week who’s been brought back to life by some witch in Mystic Falls.” She propped her elbows on the table, leaning on the palms of her hands. “Just gotta convince this witch to help us.” And to find said witch. ━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ IT WAS EASY TO stop thinking about dead brothers and dead babies when you had distractions like these. A reaper and a demon, both sexy as fuck, curled around him Scarface-style every night, plus free accommodations? Remzi was pretty much in Heaven━nah, wait, no mention of that ‘cause then he thought of Raik (even if they were Muslim and technically it was Cennet, but same shit). It was still the afterlife, and that… it wasn’t the kind of comparison he wanted to make.
The only downside about this was the kid. Hannya’s, apparently, though she didn’t look much older than him. It was weird━he definitely knew what Leah and Remzi were doing with his mom, and Remzi wasn’t trying to be anybody’s stepdad or some shit like that.
Okay, no mention of dads, either, even if the dad in question was that shithead who’d killed his brother. Fuck sake, there it was again…
He crawled out of bed looking for something to do, but ended up elbow-deep in the refrigerator. It was stocked full of good shit, high-quality shit, but Remzi went directly for the Chinese takeout stuffed all the way at the back. It could’ve been fucking moldy for all he cared━he wouldn’t get sick from it, and it was something to pass the time with.
Remzi was leaning back against the counter and stuffing his face full when Leah wandered out. It was just them now, left alone in someone else’s apartment, and it felt a little like when they used to pick targets for Remzi to drain, and then take over their lives for a little while. Partying in their empty homes, drinking all their liquor, taking money for whatever else the pair might’ve wanted later on.
He grunted through his stuffed cheeks and nodded upwards at Leah, munching through the cold heap of fried noodles in his mouth. They were definitely at least three days old, but this kind of processed shit didn’t go bad… right?
And there Leah went, breaking his fucking relaxation. Remzi’s head had been empty while he munched through the shitty food, and now it was back on his dead fucking brother. Groaning as though she’d spoiled his meal, Remzi let his neck flop backwards, pulling the container away and letting it drop to the counter. He kept chewing, swallowing a bit too much at one time. His throat felt like it was stretching to accommodate all the fucking noodles, and for a split second he thought he’d choke to death, but then it was down, and Remzi was wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
“Might have. Aren’t witches total fucking whores, though? And not in a good way.” Not like Leah and Hannya. He grimaced and rubbed at the painful feeling in his chest, but it faded within moments. “Like the dude who made my daylight ring. Couldn’t go half a second without telling me I was an asshole and that he wanted to lay me on my ass. And I know it’s me, but, like, straight up, I was being nice.” He raised his hands, palms out, testifying his innocent. “Is she gonna want money or something? Because unless we’re robbing a bank or I’m doing five years behind bars for moving some product, I’m strapped.”

She knew this idiot didn’t taste human food the same way anymore, but it didn’t mean his nose had been cut off. The smell of whatever the hell he was eating hit her as soon as she walked into the kitchen. “That smells foul.” She knew her comments would simply go in one ear and out the other. There was a look of disgust as she sat down, eyes on the vampire as he inhaled the food. One thing was for certain he was coming nowhere near her once he’d finished those noodles. Did he just fucking groan? As if Leah’s news was an inconvenience to him. “I’ve been searching everywhere for someone who can bring Raik back and you stand there and fucking groan at me.” She snapped. Ungrateful bastard. She expected a bit more gratitude from Remzi, considering she had gone out of her way, and risked her job to help him bring his brother back. Witches weren’t exactly the most helpful people, but it was a start. She thought he’d be happier than this, instead, he was busy throwing roadblocks at her. “I don’t know what she wants in return. I haven't found her yet, but it’s something.” She was convinced after Raik died Remzi would have turned it off again as she saw firsthand the grief that crushed him when she delivered the news. She thought maybe the pair had been moving in a new direction. Leah had been on her best behaviour with him since Raik died. No more dangling other boys in front of his face to get a reaction or purposely pissing him off. Maybe it was because she felt guilty or maybe it was because she’d finally admitted to herself that she cared about the idiot. Remzi hadn’t exactly done the same though. Whilst he wasn’t dangling other girls in front of her face, he was still sleeping around town which stirred some anger in her. She fucking shed tears for him and here he was screwing his face up at Leah’s news. She kept her mouth shut about the high turnover of girls though and the countless number of bottles he was polishing off every day. Leah was happy to share Remzi with Hannya too, but now he was turning to her for blood rather than kissing Leah’s neck, itching for a taste of hers. She didn’t want to do anything to push him over that edge, again. “Even if she did ask for cash we can get it. You’re acting like you can’t compel people to do shit and I can’t teleport anywhere.” She could easily teleport herself inside a bank vault. Something she’d never thought of until now. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ REMZI NEARLY CRUSHED THE TAKEOUT BOX IN HIS GRASP. It wasn’t her comment about it, but instead how Leah suddenly snapped at him, like… fucking telling him he had to be chipper or some shit. His icy blue gaze cut sharply to her own, glaring with the noddles halfway in his mouth. “Fuck off,” He growled through them, chewing until they cut off and he could tilt his head back and swallow. “Sorry if I don’t have much fucking hope after all this shit. You’ve been searching and coming up dry, and I don’t wanna get my hopes up before you’ve even secured it.” Remzi didn’t want to get let down again, going through another wave of that constant guilt as if he was finding out for the first time again.
Plus, even if she found someone, would Raik return and want everything the way it had been? Could Remzi stomach enough meaningful apologies to have Raik forgive him? They were brothers, family, fucking blood━Raik would get over it, right?
The uncertain outcomes kept him at bay━held Remzi on the sidelines with a stomachache like he was still a child. Maybe it was the noodles. Remzi puffed out a breath and dropped them to the counter by his hip, wiping his hands on his jeans.
Was it something? Really? Something was minuscule, it wasn’t an answer or a guarantee, and so Remzi wouldn’t bet on it. Not on the surface, anyway. If this fell through, he’d drop just a little bit more. Filling a glass of water from the filtered cooler in the fridge, Remzi rested against the counter once more, staring the kitchen at Leah. He wanted things to go back to the way they used to be; when it was fun and he didn’t have so many… fucking morals.
“Everybody’s on fucking vervain in this town... or whatever other shit you didn’t tell me about.” He grumbled, “You’ll have better luck… maybe,” Remzi muttered, then added under his breath, “... Just make sure you don’t go after any more pregnant bitches.” He knew she did it for him━nah, who was he kidding, this was Leah. It was probably more selfish than she wanted to admit. Anyway, even if it was to avenge Raik, Remzi started to feel so fucking weird about it. Shitty. Guilty.
Maybe he was better off without his humanity.
The thought alone had him sighing, deflating, eyes falling to his water. “Just tell me it’s not some connection through Hannya, Raik wouldn’t… I don’t wanna have his soul attached to Hell or a demon or some shit.” Sipping from the cool glass, Remzi itched for blood instead, briefly wondering if Hannya would get him some if he asked. Where was she, anyway? She was always willing to offer up a vein.
“She tell you when she was gonna be back?” Remzi asked, gaze flicking back up to Leah, just the hint of a sly smile on his lips. She was being nice, supportive, but maybe that was exactly why Remzi was needling at her. He wanted them to be normal again. Remzi would be a disappointment to everybody but they’d fucking deal with him anyway, Raik would be alive, and Leah would be a pain in his ass but a constant he couldn’t part from.

It was glaringly obvious that Leah had never lost a loved one, which wasn’t surprising given she only gave a shit about one person throughout her life. Well, it was one person until she met Remzi. Now it was two but the chance of her losing Remzi to death was improbable. No, she would probably lose her by him walking out of her life and telling her fuck off. From her outward actions and choice of words though you would never have thought Leah wanted to keep Remzi in her life. Those moments of weakness at Whitmore were a blip. Now she was left with a grieving vampire and no idea how to comfort him. She missed the old Remzi. The person he was before Raik died. She wanted to grab Remzi and tell him to get a grip. Everything was going to be okay. Exactly. She was the one who had been searching whilst he moped around the apartment, drank himself into a coma or ripped a human apart. She was the one who had been running around like a headless chicken trying to find someone who could help them. “Fine… I’ll keep you out of this but when Raik is back I’ll be sure to tell him you didn’t lift a fucking finger whilst trying to save him.” She bit back, her body rigid and flicker of tension in her jaw as she spoke. One quick swoop and she could snap his weak neck. The thought was always there. True, almost everyone was on vervain in Mystic Falls, but Remzi wasn’t clever enough to think outside the box. To use that pea brain that was rattling around in his head doing absolutely nothing. “I can teleport.” She repeated bluntly, but whatever it was clear he didn’t want to know. When she promised Remzi she’d bring Raik back from the other side she thought Remzi would have at least done something to help her. Anything. “Fuck you. That pregnant bitch killed your brother… don’t forget that.” The blood of the dead baby was on Remzi’s hands too if he looked close enough, alongside Raik’s blood. She was growing tired of choosing her words carefully around him. Leah placed her hands softly on the counter, her nails tapping against the surface lightly. “No, his soul wouldn’t be attached to jackshit. He’d come back as a human… good as new.” With the trauma of dying and spending months alone on the other side. Remzi flicked the conversation over to Hannya, as though the demon was more important than his brother. She knew that wasn’t the point, he was trying to stir the pot a little between them. “Fuck knows.” She shrugged her shoulders, relaxing back into the chair. “If you’re looking for a meal you might have to head outside in search of one.” The demon was happy to provide, but Leah still refused even though that control she had over Remzi was slowly slipping away thanks to Hannya. ━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ ‘... but when Raik is back I’ll be sure to tell him you didn’t lift a fucking finger whilst trying to save him.’
HE THOUGHT ABOUT HITTING HER. IT WASN’T A thought he was particularly proud of, but it was there, and Remzi knew he couldn’t kill her, so what the fuck ever. His gaze shot to Leah and narrowed, unbelievably irritated━but, more than anything, he was fucking heartbroken. He wanted his brother back more than anything in the world, and Leah kept rubbing it in his fucking face. He couldn’t get his hopes up because what if it didn’t work? What if he put all this time and energy into this, started planning for the future, and got nothing from it? He hoped she’d be able to talk shit later on. It would mean Raik was back.
Instead of responding, of letting heartbreak pour from his mouth, Remzi stuffed his face with more noodles. How was he supposed to beg for Leah in this scenario? For a softness he barely got, that he didn’t deserve, and from the person who’d started all this? That wasn’t true, he knew it, but he was still struggling with his responsibility. It was her brother, after all, her fucking war. He’d just stuck himself in the middle of it in a half-assed attempt to piss her off.
Right, she could teleport. She could ruin everything and get him locked up before he could see his brother, too. It would be just like Leah to do some shit like that on purpose. Leah was the cause of almost every bad situation since he’d arrived in Mystic Falls.
“Yeah? Did her baby kill him, too?” Having switched the noodles out for water, Remzi took a cold mouthful and let the icy water cool his throat. It did nothing to ease the burn in his eyes or the desperation to rip into a fresh vein, but it helped for a fraction of a second.
That was it. It was the kid, the innocent one in all of this, that made him feel like shit. Remzi had intruded into Leah’s shit with her brother, and suddenly two people were dead━maybe more. That wasn’t an eye for an eye, that was just… fucked. It’d always rubbed him the wrong way when his friends (back in Detroit) had talked about their pregnant girlfriends like they meant nothing. Like they’d still smack them around even though their kid was inside her.
He hadn’t said anything, though. He just thought he was a little better than them, and then it turned out he was worse. Fuck this. Had Leah made him this way, or was he always this shitty? Did she just bring out what was already buried inside?
“Good as new.” Remzi repeated with a snort, slamming his cup on the table just a little too hard. Water splashed out and over his knuckles, spreading over the counter. “Just like I did?” His voice raised, booming loudly across Hannya’s apartment. “You mean he fucking died and got resurrected and everything’s gonna be the exact same? Are you fucked?” He was shouting now, and guilt trembled through his every nerve, making him feel like a monster. He was a fucking monster.
He might just head outside. Or, instead, maybe he’d tear through her best friend on the kitchen table and Leah could sit there and watch. It’d be just like Hannya to stroll through the door now━she always had perfect fucking timing. “Maybe I will. It’ll be better than sitting here fuckin’ listening to you bitch at me.” They hadn’t lived together in all the years they’d known one another, and it’d gone alright a majority of the time. He figured that, under better circumstances, they would’ve been alright. They’d still fight, though, ‘cause it kept shit interesting. But this wasn’t like that. Remzi was tired, sad, and just not in the fucking mood.

She couldn’t help being spiteful, truly she couldn’t. It bled out of her like poison and even if she tried to stop it, it would seep through her fingers. She had no control over it. It was her default setting in situations like this. Remzi wasn’t praising her for all she’d done, but instead, he was trying to bring her down by telling her the plan was hopeless before he’d even had the chance to digest what she’d told him, much like he wasn’t digesting the noodles he was ramming into his mouth. She kept her eyes locked on him as he glared at her. Of course, she’d struck a chord, that was her intention. To hit him where it hurt, which was his dead brother right now. He didn’t bite back though. She was expecting him to launch the noodles across the counter and storm out of the apartment or even grab her by the throat. Her words rang true though. Remzi had wallowed in guilt and grief since Raik died instead of helping her to find ways to bring him back. The night she broke the news to him she was convinced he wouldn’t give up hope, but it diminished rapidly. She knew that Remzi was scared to bring Raik back from the other side because there was a chance his older brother wouldn’t forgive him for what happened. She’d heard from others that it was impossible to hate your own flesh and blood, but she couldn’t relate. Her mom, dad and Grey. She despised them all and longed to dance on their graves. There was still hope for Raik and Remzi. They didn’t have the dysfunctional fucked up family she had. They loved and cared for one another, again just another thing she couldn’t remotely relate to. That was it though. She couldn’t relate to half the people around her. All the love and compassion they had for one enough made her feel uncomfortable, which is why she chose to surround herself with the demons and unhinged vampires. That’s why she chose Remzi in the first place, but it wasn’t playing out the way she hoped. Leah wasn’t dumb, she knew she was broken. Not a standard broken though, like when a girl goes off the rails for a few months after her first heartbreak. It was hardwired into her brain. Then Remzi brought up the baby. “Fuck you.” She spat harshly. In a mirrored response he struck a chord with her. She refused to have this dead baby lingering over her head for eternity. It was an accident. A fucking accident. Leah glanced down at the cup, watching the water spill from the sides over the counter. She glanced back up at Remzi, his words ringing through her ears as he bellowed at her. “He’ll come back as a human… obviously things won’t be exactly the same because he died, but at least you’ll have your brother back.” She didn’t match his tone, rather she kept her voice low as she spoke. She wasn’t in the mood to get into the screaming match with the vampire. “Bitch at you?” She exclaimed, shuffling off the seat to stand up. Leah marched around the counter, over to Remzi’s side to face him. “I’m trying to help you.” She raised her right hand, pressing her index finger into his chest hard, “If you don’t want my help anymore just saying the fucking word and I’ll leave… I’ll leave you and I’ll leave Mystic Falls.” Her tone was sharp, but there was emotion lying behind her words which could be heard as she spoke. This was getting too much for her to handle. One word from Remzi and she’d teleport out of that apartment. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ REMZI TOOK (AT LEAST) MORE THAN HALF THE BLAME. Leah might’ve dealt the blow that ended in bloodshed and… the baby, but Remzi was the one who’d started meddling. The one who’d involved himself and shared his brother’s name.
He felt guilty, blamed himself, but he took it out on Leah. It wasn’t like she was innocent, either.
Been there, done that. He wanted to say, ensuring he would piss her off completely. But Remzi hesitated, then let his focus snap to Leah’s pisspoor fucking promises. If she got Raik back, he wouldn’t be the same. Would he rather stay dead? Even if it was too early and all Remzi’s fault, would Raik decide to keep everything… the same? Remzi was the vampire, he was the one thrust into all this, and Raik was just a human━never involved. He’d be human when he came back, sure, but… he’d still experience something unnatural. Supernatural. Was it unfair of Remzi to try to turn this around?
He was doing it for himself, right? Even if he wanted Raik to live, to have another shot at the life stolen from him prematurely, it was still fucking selfish. Maybe that’s why he found himself on a see-saw of decisions, going back and forth with Leah. She was working hard to resurrect Raik, and Remzi wasn’t sure it was the right thing anymore.
At least you’ll have your brother back. But that was just it━it was for him. For Remzi. He’d died for only a few moments, not nearly as long as Raik had. It had to be worse.
Leah came sauntering up, facing him head-on like she was ten times her size. Remzi craned his neck to glare down at her, watching Leah with a set jaw. She was trying to help. He knew that.
And as much as he liked to yell and piss her off, he couldn’t… she’d been around for so long. She was the same kind of terrible he was, the only person he trusted to never judge his actions too harshly. They poked and prodded at one another, dug up bullshit to offend and ridicule and hurt, but he couldn’t imagine his life without her.
Remzi wished he could tell her to fuck off. That he’d find someone else to start shit with or, better yet, he’d fix himself and head down a straight path━the one his mom laid out for him after his overd-se. None of it would be true, though, and even the thought of separating from Leah made Remzi feel emptier than he already was. He’d lost Raik━he couldn’t lose Leah, too.
His lips parted, an angry expression on his face like he was about to spit verbal lava at her, but they slowly closed again. His brow remained furrowed, confused about how he felt━how he’d react. All he knew was that he couldn’t lose her.
Remzi wasn’t about to admit that, either.
Instead of leaving like he might’ve done any other time━just walked out in a huff, slammed the door and didn’t look back━Remzi slowly rolled forward. Bending to her height, he slipped his arms around Leah, gathering her tiny body into him. He couldn’t find the right words, so he said nothing. Remzi tucked his face into the safe crevice of Leah’s neck and closed his eyes, breathing her in.
They might’ve been monsters, the worst fucking people he knew, capable of destruction in every way, shape or form, but Remzi felt safe with her. Loved wholly and entirely in a way he’d never experienced before, and not with conditions. His family wanted to change him, but Leah loved him despite how terrible he was, and he loved her the same. Maybe that wasn’t right, maybe they both should’ve been better, but it was what he needed right now.
She was everything he needed.
