Josie’s hand was still shaking as she turned the page of the book she was reading and she quickly wiped away the tears that threatened to fall. Being born a witch meant that she had always known about the supernatural world and her dad had been teaching her how to fight for as long as she could remember. She knew that the world she lived in was dangerous, after all Rafael had been killed by someone because his name had ended up on the hitlist and she knew that Elias had died the same day that his foster parents had lost their lives too. No one seemed to be immune to loss but Josie’s family had been pretty fortunate until that night when Jed had lost his life. He hadn’t been gone for very long but Josie had missed him more than she had ever thought she could. Jed wasn’t related to her by blood but he was still her brother and she loved him. She hated the fact that he had sacrificed himself to save Ben but the truth was that she understood why he had done because if it was Hope in danger then Josie knew that she would give her life up for her in an instant, it was what anyone in her family would do for the one they loved. She couldn’t blame Jed for what he had done but she was determined not to let it happen again to him or to anyone else. It was late so Josie knew that she should probably be asleep right now but she couldn’t bring herself to even try, certain that the moment she closed her eyes she would see Jed die all over again and that was something that she didn’t want to happen. Her parents knew what had happened and Josie wanted nothing more than to see them and take comfort from being around them but she knew that she couldn’t, not when she felt like she had failed Jed and Ben. She had known how serious the curse was, Jed had told her a bit about it and she had learned even more from Ben himself while they were hanging out, but she still hadn’t been find a way to stop the monsters from coming after him. If she had been able to do that then Jed wouldn’t have died and Josie knew that she needed to right that wrong. She was already on her fourth cup of coffee when the sun began to rise and she didn’t even look up from the book she was reading when she heard footsteps approaching. “What time is it?” she asked as she shifted the book over to the pile she had read and pulled the next in front of her. So far she hadn’t been able to find anything that would break the curse but she was starting to think that perhaps that was the wrong way to go about it after all. ━ the heart wants what it wants━
Hope stepped back from the sleeping form of the student who had finally shifted back from her dragon form. Hope gently moved the covers over her before she quietly made her way out of the room. Hope murmured a spell under her breath and with a gesture of her hand, she locked the door, just as a safety precaution. The magic should wear off in a couple of hours which she will barely feel since she was asleep. Today had proven to be a hard day, for everyone involved. But especially for Jed, Ben, and Josie. They are the ones who felt the loss more than anyone who was currently present at the school. Of course, that's not to say that his parents would not have felt that grief too, but they weren't there to witness it. Not like Ben and Josie had.
Needless to say, Hope was concerned about her girlfriend. She didn't like seeing her in pain and Hope could tell that she was going through a lot of emotions and none of them were exactly good ones. Hope had been fortunate enough to never experience loss permanently. Rafael had died, but due to her blood coursing through his veins, he became a hybrid and so she didn't lose him permanently. But that had still hurt quite a lot. Hope wanted to give Josie her distance, but at the same time, she didn't want to spend her time uselessly, so she began checking her own resources to hopefully find a way to break Ben's curse. But the hours that she spent researching weren't exactly fruitful, mainly because she was far too worried about Josie's well-being as the hours sped by and she soon realized that the morning was starting to rise already if the chirping noises gave anything away.
Hope bit down on her bottom lip before she placed her book down and quickly pushed herself up so that she could make her way to where Josie was. Her footsteps were loud enough to alert Josie of her presence which was good because she didn't want to scare her. "Way too early, Jo." Hope's soft voice soon made itself known as she began making her way to her girlfriend. "You've been looking through the books for hours now and I'm pretty sure you have consumed like..." Hope glanced at the empty cups of coffee with a concerned look on her face. "Four cups of coffee." Hope pulled a chair and moved it closer to Josie before she sat down, her hand reaching to grasp Josie's shaking one. "Tonight was pretty scary, huh?" Hope's blue eyes searched for Josie's. "You know that keeping it all bottled up isn't good for you, Jo. You can talk to me, you know that, right?"

Josie knew that she never wanted to have another night like that one. She had been fortunate in that her family had remained unharmed by the hitlist and everything else that was going on in Mystic Falls but then Jed had decided to give up his life in order to save Ben’s. Josie wanted to be mad at him but the truth was that she couldn’t be, not when she understood why he had done it. Ben had been cursed thousands of years before and he was doomed to die and regenerate only for it to happen all over again. She understood why Jed had wanted to save Ben from going through that again because the truth was that Josie would want to do the same if it was Hope who was going through all of that. Love could make people do crazy things and her brother was no exception to that rule. Josie had known about the curse ever since Ben had arrived at the school but she hadn’t truly understood just how bad it was and how easy it would be for other people to end up getting hurt until now and she was determined not to let anything happen to anyone else. After they’d put the dragon to sleep Hope had agreed to take care of it and that left Josie to head to the library and hit the books. Josie knew that she was exhausted, she could feel it the moment she sat down, but she was too wired to sleep after what had happened and she knew that she didn’t want to see Jed die all over again the moment she closed her eyes. Instead she started going through as many books as she could and completely lost track of time, relying on coffee to keep her awake. It wasn’t healthy, Josie knew that, but it was all she could do right now and she was glad that the other students had at least seemingly decided to head to bed early. Where Jed was in that moment she wasn’t sure but she knew that he was safe and that Ben would make sure that nothing happened to him again. Hours passed by without Josie even realising it although it came as a comfort when it was her girlfriend’s voice that answered her question about what time it was. “I thought you’d gone to sleep. Is the dragon okay?” she asked as she paused in what she was doing, knowing that a break for a little while would probably do her eyes some good. She hadn’t stuck around to find out who the dragon was, too worried about Jed to be able to think about that, but now she couldn’t deny that she was curious. “Soon to be five, I think,” Josie said, stifling a yawn as she looked up to see Hope approaching. Josie wasn’t used to staying up all night, there were times when she and Hope had stayed up late texting and others when she had ended up watching films with her siblings but this was different and she knew it. As Hope took her hand, Josie moved her free hand so that it was covering Hope’s. “It was really scary, I’ve been trying not to think about it,” she admitted as she met Hope’s gaze. “I know I can. I can talk to you about anything but I’m worried that if I think about it then I’ll start crying again and if I do that I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop,” she said, her voice already breaking slightly as she spoke. That wasn’t what Jed, Ben or her parents needed from her right now, they needed her to be strong and find a way to break the curse or at the very least stop the monsters from going after Ben so that no one else would end up getting hurt, she always felt like she had to try and be the strong one. “I wouldn’t be able to sleep even if I tried. But yeah, she’s okay. Asleep, for now. I put a spell just to be sure she won’t go seeking a new round.” Hope said with a quick nod of her head following as she made her way over to her girlfriend who looked like she was going to fall asleep at any given moment. She looked tired. They stayed late at times, texting each other but that’s different from what was happening right now and Hope knew that all too well. “Or, you could come with me and get some sleep. We can always pick where you left off tomorrow. Or, well, technically today.” Hope offered even though she knew the answer to that question already. Her eyes were focused on her girlfriend and they showcased the concern that she felt for Josie.
Hope nodded her head slowly as Josie expressed that it had been really scary and that she was trying not to think about it. She stayed quiet as she listened to her girlfriend, the way her voice broke slightly was already making Hope’s heart hurt. “Well, if there’s one thing that I do know, is that burying how you feel is never the answer. Forcing yourself to be distracted by something else isn’t the answer either. You’ll only burn yourself out and the pain will still be there, Josie.” Hope said in a soft voice as she offered Josie’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Allow yourself to feel sad, Josie. It doesn’t make you a bad person. Jed means a lot to you and what you witnessed today was— haunting, for lack of a better word. So, if you need to cry it out, I’m here. I’ll hold you until you feel better.”

“Thank you,” Josie said sincerely as Hope said she’d done a spell to make sure that the same thing wouldn’t happen again. “I don’t think any of us could deal with a repeat performance,” she added. Josie had never expected something like that to happen, Ben had explained about the curse that had been placed on him but Josie had never truly appreciated just how awful it was until now or how easy it would be for someone else to get hurt. She knew that what had happened wasn’t an accident, Jed had deliberately pushed Ben out of the way and she wanted to be angry with him for that but the truth was that she couldn’t bring herself to feel that way because she knew that she would have done the same thing for Hope. Jed had already given his life up for Ben once and Josie knew that she didn’t want him to do that a second time so she was more determined than ever to find a way to do something about the curse. “I can’t, I need to find a way to break this curse,” Josie said with a shake of her head. “Sleep will have to wait.” She was exhausted but losing her brother like that had affected her more than she could put into words and she knew that she needed to do this. “Will you stay with me though?” she asked, knowing that she would feel much better knowing that Hope was there, she always did. Josie knew that the moment she closed her eyes she would end up reliving the events of the night before and the truth was that she wasn’t in a hurry to do that so she hoped that Hope would understand. “I know it will and I’ll deal with it but not yet. I didn’t take Ben’s curse as seriously as I should have done and Jed died, I need to do this,” she breathed. “They’re counting on me.” She already felt like she had failed them, she had promised that she would find a way to break the curse but she hadn’t managed to do that yet. Josie knew deep down that this wasn’t her fault but so many “what if’s” were running through her mind right now that she wasn’t ready to accept that. Right now all she could focus on was that Jed had given up his life to save Ben and she needed to find a way to stop him from doing that again. Josie was doing her best to stay strong but as Hope spoke again she felt her eyes sting with tears. “I do feel sad, every time I close my eyes even for a moment I see him die all over again. There wasn’t anything I could do to stop it,” she said, a few tears spilling over her lashes before she quickly wiped them away. “I can’t break down now, I can’t,” she breathed although more tears were starting to fall now as it began catching up with her now that she had no choice but to think about what had happened. Before she had been keeping herself distracted but now things were different and it didn’t matter how much she wanted to go back to focusing on the book in front of her she just couldn’t bring herself to do it yet. “I can’t believe he died,” she said, her voice shaking with each word. Raf had died too but it was different for him as he’d died with Hope’s blood in his system. Jed’s body had been burned beyond all recognition and she wasn’t sure if anything she or Hope could have done would have been enough to bring him back if Ben hadn’t done so. “I want to be angry with him for doing something so reckless but I can’t because I would have done the same if it was you who was about to die.”HOPE MIKAELSON

“No problem, really.” Hope responded with a soft voice, her eyes relaxing on Josie again before she started making her way over to her girlfriend. She brought a chair and sat down next to her girlfriend, her eyes focused solely on her. “Yeah, one match was enough.” It was definitely a tough wakeup call. A reminder to Hope that her friends, or most of them, were mortals and anything could happen that could lead to their death. Unlike Hope, who wasn’t as easy to get rid of. There was that haunting thought that if it weren’t for Ben reviving Jed, she didn’t think she would have been able to bring Jed back, same with Josie, too. He had been burnt beyond recognition that they wouldn’t even know where to start when it comes to healing him. Hope blinked a few times to get rid of the thought because there was no usie thinking about that. Ben had brought him back and from the surprise that she saw on his face, it was a whole new power that he didn’t know he possessed. “You look like you’re gonna pass out, Jo. I don’t think you’re helping anyone at the moment. You’re just making matters worse for yourself.” Hope’s voice was soft as she spoke. She didn’t want to sound mean, she was just concerned about Josie’s safety. “I wasn’t planning on going anywhere.” It could be because Josie was afraid of closing her eyes because it would just be a constant repeat of what she had witnessed tonight, so Hope didn’t push her to go to sleep and instead stayed by her side.
Hope frowned slightly as she listened to Josie. She could tell that her girlfriend was blaming herself for not finding a way to break Ben’s curse sooner. “I get it, Jo. You don’t have to do this alone, though. I’ll help you.” Hope said with a quick nod of her head following. “We’ll find a way.” Did that Hope know that for sure? Not really, no. But that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to try her hardest to find a way to break Ben’s curse so they wouldn’t have to experience another loss. “But you can’t push yourself too far, Josie. You’ll burn out. I can’t watch you do that to yourself. So, please, take it easy.”
Hope’s eyes softened as she listened to Josie talk about how it made her feel to see Jed die. She gave Josie’s hand a gentle squeeze to let her know that she was there for her. She reached her hand out to gentle wipe Josie’s tears away. “What happened wasn’t your fault, Josie. I’ve learned the hard way that you can’t save everyone, no matter how hard you try.” She had tried her hardest to prevent Rafael’s death, but in the end, it happened anyway. “If you keep blaming yourself like that, it’s only going to cause you more pain.” Hope told her in a soft voice, knowing that better than most.
Hope’s eyes remained on her girlfriend, listening to her as she talked, her heart squeezing. Her eyes softened as she listened to Josie, her hand giving Josie’s a gentle squeeze. “I get why he did it, too. I would have done the same thing if it was you who was about to die. I guess what they say about love is true. It makes you reckless.” Hope’s voice was soft as she spoke. “I’m sorry you had to see it, Jo.”

“Is she okay?” Josie asked before nodding as Hope said that one match was enough, unable to deny that she was worried about the girl that had attacked Jed and Ben. She knew it wasn’t the girl’s fault, Ben had told her that some supernaturals were only affected when they shifted and it looked like that was definitely true of dragons. Josie knew that the girl hadn’t had a choice in the matter, something had come over her after she’d transformed and Josie was glad that they’d managed to stop her before she had hurt anyone else. Jed had given up his life to save Ben but Josie didn’t know whether it would have even stopped after he died. That wasn’t something that she would ever wish on him, though, he was her friend and Josie knew that she had to find a way to stop him going through this all the time. Truth be told she was so grateful to Ben for bringing Jed back, she didn’t blame him for what had happened any more than she blamed Jed or the girl and she was glad that he’d done something that she wasn’t sure she or Hope would have been able to do. Magic could do incredible things but Josie hadn’t even known where to start when it came to healing Jed, most injuries were easy enough to figure out how to heal and Henrik had showed them a way of bringing people back to life but Jed had been burnt beyond all recognition and Josie had no idea how to bring someone back from that. Ben had seemed surprised that he’d managed to bring Jed back himself so Josie wasn’t sure if he had even known that he was capable of it but either way she knew that she was going to have to make sure to thank him when she saw him. “I’m okay,” Josie said although truth be told she wasn’t sure whether she was trying to convince Hope of that or herself. “I’ll sleep later, I promise,” she added gently. “You’re just as bad as I am, I imagine you’re pretty tired as well,” she said, studying Hope carefully for a moment. It hadn’t been an easy night for Hope either but she seemed to be taking it all in her stride and Josie was proud of her for that. “Thank you,” she said, giving Hope’s hands a gentle squeeze. She always felt better when Hope was with her and Josie hoped that being near her would keep those awful memories at bay. There was a part of Josie that hoped that Hope might stay with her when she did eventually go to sleep but she was a little nervous about asking. “Thank you, you have no idea how much I appreciate that,” she said gently. Josie had known that she could count on Hope, they had been there for each other through everything even before they got together and that hadn’t changed. She knew that trying to do this on her own wasn’t going to work, she needed input from others to give a fresh perspective on things and hopefully see something that she was missing. She was already starting to wonder whether she was going about this the wrong way by trying to find a way to break the curse straight away, perhaps instead there was a way to mask Ben’s presence from them and stop the monsters from going after him even if it was only temporarily. “I will, I promise. I’ll try and pace myself and I know I can count on you to tell me when to stop.” They had always been able to do that for each other and even though Hope had tried to tell her to stop now Josie was pretty sure that Hope understood why she wasn’t ready to do that just yet. Right now focusing on finding a way to break the curse was easier than focusing on the fact that Jed had died but the moment Hope brought it up it became all that Josie could think about even though she was doing her best not to think about that. “I know you’re right but it’s easier said than done,” Josie admitted, leaning into Hope’s touch as Hope wiped her tears away. She did blame herself for not working harder to find a way to break Ben’s curse but she knew that she needed to find a way to stop. “How do you do it?” she asked gently. It was something that she had always admired about Hope, she was always so strong and capable of doing just about anything, and Josie knew that she needed to find a way to take a leaf out of her girlfriend’s book right now. As Hope said she would have done the same thing for her, Josie felt her heart ache. “It really does,” she agreed as Hope said that love makes you reckless. “I know I haven’t said this but I do love you Hope, I hope you know that,” she said gently. She was in love with Hope and the truth was that she had been for a long time even before they got together. She had wanted to say it for such a long time but now she’d had a wakeup call and she knew just how quickly a life could be cut short and she knew that she didn’t want to waste another moment of it. As Hope said that she was sorry she’d had to see it, Josie shook her head. “It’s okay. To be honest I’m not sure I would have believed it if I hadn’t,” she admitted. It would have been easy to stay in denial and refuse to accept that it hadn’t happened but she had seen it for herself so she didn’t have that luxury and she knew deep down that that was probably a good thing.
