What was wrong with the last place she’d never know. OK, that was a lie. Standing in the lobby, waiting for the elevator to creak its way down through the building, Phoebe rolled her eyes and suppressed a shudder. It had been a man’s apartment – a bachelor’s pad, if they even called them that anymore – one step above a dorm room. There was no soul to it, no heart.
Phoebe pushed the thought of her own dorm room aside. There was some heart to that at least. No bare walls – although she drew the line at the ridiculous posters most of the others plastered their rooms with – no mismatched, picked up in a rush from whatever place sold the cheap sort of crap you could leave behind in a year or two when you wanted to disappear from town. Her room had a scattered of photos tacked up on a cork board over her bed. Nights out here in town, in the village, a black and white image of a family on a lake front hidden beneath the cover of the modern day. Home lingering despite the decades that’d passed since her parents had practically chased her out of it. That she couldn’t have said about Lawrence’s place.
Her finger hovered over the button for his previous floor as she stepped into the elevator, before she readjusted and punched another. She was sure her memory wouldn’t have failed her but she dipped for her phone in her bag all the same. No, she had it right, the apartment number right there in the text Lawrence had sent. New digs. Not a word of explanation. Typical man. Maybe if he hadn’t been so typical his daylight ring would’ve still been on his finger and he wouldn’t have ended up pretty much trapped in those four walls.
Maybe it was karma.
Her top lip caught between her teeth and her tongue Phoebe lounged back against the wall of the elevator, swinging slightly on the pivot of her heels. She would’ve laid money on Teddy not falling for the same trick. She huffed out a snort of laughter. Teddy would’ve been so shocked at the feel of a mouth on his finger that he’d likely have been staring, mouth hanging open, heat rising into his cheeks until those lips had retreated with a pop that was almost echoed below. Lawrence had undoubtedly been distracted too, although it seemed as though common sense had retreated from his brain with the flow of blood south.
If the ring wasn’t back on his finger by the end of the month she’d drag every detail about his ‘female friend’ out of him and she’d track her down herself. You didn’t spend decades playing at being Barney Fife and not pick up on a thing or two about tracking people down. Once an investigator, always an investigator and now she had the extra bite that the thought of Lawrence having a senior moment and frying himself to death because he opened the drapes brought her too.
Phoebe eyed her reflection in the dinged metal wall of the elevator. A muddied version of herself but clear enough for her to catch the gleam of her teeth as she bared and snapped them. Try and take the brother she’d just gotten back and oh, she’d bite alright. Snap.
Lawrence was going to get his own version of the teeth when she got into the apartment. It was barely past six, the sun was still up, which meant he was likely cowering behind the closed drapes, rocking back and forth in withdrawal. In an hour or two it would dip below the horizon and then she was dragging him out. This was enough.
Another glance at the phone, eyes snapping up from it to compare to the numbers on the door opposite when the elevator pinged open finally. A slow turn on the cheap industrial carpet, the numbers counted off one after another until she paused in front of the new one. No keys. Probably on purpose after her last visit.
Lips pursed, Phoebe rapped her knuckles on the door, a quick trill of them. A wait that had her rolling her eyes and tapping again. There’d been no real sound on the other side but it squeaked open after a minute. Whiskey eyes dropped from where they’d been lifted to a stop almost a foot over her own head – OK, more like 8 inches with the heels she had on – down, down to the eyes that were closer to her belly button.
She tipped her head, brows furrowing as she looked at the tiny figure of what she would’ve been sure was a child anywhere but in this town. Phoebe’s lips curled up slowly, that shrewd look keeping them pinned. ”If you tell me she was a witch and this is some sort of curse to punish you further, I’m going to laugh,” she warned. ”Lawrence?” Her voice rose, the toes of her shoes digging into the carpet as she leaned forward to try and look past the kid without getting close enough for those little hands to come anywhere near her.

━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY DIDN’T WANT TO say that life in Mystic Falls was finally turning around. Every time he did, something terrible happened. He’d just started to get used to having not only a best friend, but somebody to rely on, and then Lawrence disappeared. Granted, it wasn’t Teddy’s fault and he knew that now, but the whole thing with Phoebe… well, that didn’t make him feel any better.
But things were easier. Julian would be attending regular school in less than no time, and the Salvatore School had been working out great for him so far. It was easier to have half-daycare/half-magic training, especially when Teddy couldn’t conjure his own, and it was difficult (and guilt-inducing) to have Julian fill up an amulet for him.
Maybe they weren’t easier. They were just settled. Octavia’s loss was no longer a constant ache, but rather a gaping spot in his life he missed. His feelings about Phoebe (although the happy ones were momentary) proved he was ready to move on. If only there were someone who wouldn’t just leave after he’d started to get used to the idea of having them around.
Ruffling his curls under the showerhead until they were free of suds, Teddy shut off the water and climbed out, once again thankful for modern plumbing━one of the luxuries he didn’t know existed until he’d left the coven. Drying off his hair first, then his body, Teddy wrapped the towel around his waist and moved from the tiny bathroom into the bedroom. It was when he was picking out clothes that he heard the door and hoped that Lawrence was keeping an eye on the toddler and would open the door.
‘Lawrence?’
Evidently not. Teddy quickly slipped on a t-shirt, in a worried rush to greet whoever was at the door. If they were calling Lawrence’s name it wasn’t likely one of his mother’s henchmen, but the voice was still jarring. In only a shirt and his towel, Teddy held onto the terry cloth as he left the bedroom.
Before he could even make it out, Julian was beaming up at the stranger, proudly announcing, “I’m a witch!” And reaching for her hand to drag her inside. “Lawrence’s sleeping, I think. Dad’s in the shower. Come in!” Sounding like his mouth was full of spit━or perhaps it had something to do with the peanut butter smeared on his cheeks━his sounds were a little off. ‘Fink’ and ‘duh’ in place of ‘think’ and ‘the’, but otherwise he’d developed normally━much to Teddy’s relief.
Just two short steps into the apartment and Teddy was joining them, heart thumping rapidly in his chest until he saw… Phoebe? Oh, great. It was awkward enough that she ended up being Lawrence’s sister, but now she was in his apartment? And with Julian clutching her with… was that peanut butter? Where the hell was Lawrence?
“Oh. Hi. Lawrence didn’t say you were coming over.” Teddy mumbled uncomfortably, keeping an eye on her while he reached for Julian, who didn’t seem to want to let go. He cursed himself now for putting the apartment in Julian’s name━at the time it’d seemed like such a good idea.
“Wan’ some peanut budder?” Julian asked sweetly, staring up at Phoebe with big, brown eyes, swerving around his dad’s hand to start leading her to the kitchen.

Ninety percent of the time Lawrence loved living with Teddy, then there was ten percent of him that missed his old apartment. Firstly, his friend only had decaf coffee and secondly, he had absolutely no spirits in his house. Not a single bottle of whiskey in sight. The two things that fuelled Lawrence most days, along with blood. He didn’t make a deal out of it though because Teddy had been kind enough to offer his spare room to Lawrence. In fact, he jumped at the opportunity. Two best friends living together. Plus there would be an extra pair of hands around the place to help out with looking after Julian, although Lawrence wasn’t much help sometimes. Whenever Teddy was working late at the graveyard Lawrence would be feeding Julian whatever the hell he wanted. Marshmallows covered in chocolate? Sure. A bag of chips and dip? Yeah, why not. Plus Lawrence’s bedtime stories weren’t exactly fresh out of Disney either. He’d tell the kid about his time in New Orleans or teach him spells he knew the Salvatore school wouldn’t, given he spent his first few years at the school. He told his sister he’d moved apartments, but he didn’t tell her he was living with Teddy. She was under strict instructions to only come round during certain times of the day whilst Julian was at school and Teddy was at work. Even then she couldn’t step inside, which was a relief given there were pictures everywhere of Teddy, Julian and Octavia. Feeling the sun through the window wasn’t like feeling the sun outside, but it was enough to keep him happy. A bit of warmth on his otherwise cold skin. He shuffled up in bed as he heard someone knock on the door, although he didn’t move, assuming it was for Teddy until he heard a female's voice ring through the apartment. Phoebe? Shit. He quickly jumped out of bed, throwing his bedroom door open seconds after Teddy stepped out. Julian was already busy inviting her inside. “That’s because Lawrence didn’t know she was coming over.” He shot a glare at his sister as Julian was guiding her to the kitchen. Lawrence pulled his bedroom door close behind him, “Julian. Phoebe is super allergic to peanuts so maybe not.” He could see his sister was keen to be released from the child who was covered in sticky food. “Why don’t you go and play with the lego in your room? Carry on building that cool fort we were working on yesterday.” Julian hesitated, obviously wanting to play with his new friend Phoebe. “I’ll come and help you in a bit.”That was enough to convince him as he dropped Phoebe’s hand and rushed off towards his bedroom. Lawrence waited until the door clicked shut before turning back to his sister. “I told you I was busy today.” Well, he wasn’t unless being busy meant lying in bed all day drifting in and out of sleep. Eighty years was plenty of time to lose track of someone’s life. Lawrence had lived an entire lifetime since their parents had popped the ring on his finger and sent him off to be someone else’s problem, somewhere else. Just as she’d lived her own in almost as time. Two kids dead within a handful of years would’ve been a tragedy to anybody but their parents had seemed to shrug off their undeath like their biggest problem with it all was finding a regent for the coven. No tears, no broken hearts, no long period of mourning for anyone but the two of them.
A handful of months was plenty of time to catch up on at least the broad strokes of those eighty years. Lawrence’s time in New Orleans, his move here, his best friend who – and it hadn’t been a purposeful two fingers up at Lawrence, she’d had no clue who Teddy was at the time – had ended up in her bed. Her decades spent out in the wilderness, Josiah – God how her heart had ached to talk of him again – the village, the badge, her decision to do something more that had led her right to the club and the reunion with her brother that Phoebe had thought she’d never see.
They were as close as they had been then but they didn’t live in each other’s pockets, despite Lawrence perhaps wishing she was a little less bullish about working her way into his life from time to time. It wasn’t lucky for him that she’d started turning a deaf ear to the word don’t before she was even out of diapers. Don’t didn’t get your ring back and it didn’t send you scurrying away from the door when it turned out your rat of a big brother had somehow caught himself snarled up with someone with a child.
As Lawrence failed to appear immediately at her yell of his name, Phoebe looked back down at that tiny form. Peanut butter smeared cheeks bulged with a grin, equally smeared fingers closing around hers in a way that had her squelching back an ew. Phoebe’s heels skittered a little at the doorway like she’d find herself slamming up against that invisible wall that kept vampires out of the homes of unsuspecting meals on legs. The child tugged and she was two steps into the apartment before Teddy appeared. Interesting and horrifying all at the same time – either short stuff here was the youngest vampire she’d ever seen or someone savvy had put the apartment in his name, not realising that the childish welcome was going to blow the doors right open.
Those amber eyes settled on Teddy, dipping from the damp spotted t-shirt to the towel and the bare legs and feet beneath – surprisingly smooth in contrast to the pelt on his chest. Amusement pulled at her mouth faintly as she ignored his presence for a moment to dip her head towards Teddy’s child. ”Are you now? I was too. I think daddy might be out.” And had been long enough that he was relatively dry, although those curls were still wet and tight. They’d have curled cool around her fingers if she’d slipped in the way she had done that night.
Her smile curled tighter, her hand swinging the child’s lightly. Lawrence had obviously kept what was going on from both of them, although, in Lawrence’s defence (not that he deserved it, the rat!) he hadn’t known she was going to appear. ”Hi,” she chimed lightly. She didn’t let Lawrence off the hook, just smiled down at the child as he offered her some of what was spread all over his little urchin face. ”I’d love …” Some. Along with an explanation for just why her rat bastard brother had finally chosen now to keep his mouth shut. Had he been trying to scheme his way right to this?
As though the pet name rolling through her head had summoned him from his bed, Lawrence finally appeared. The greasy grip the child had on her was leaving her cringing, her lip trembling as it fought not to curl in disgust at the situation. Phoebe let the boy guide her into the kitchen, casting a look at Lawrence over her shoulder. ”There are a lot of things Lawrence has been keeping to himself,” she said sweetly. As he tried to cut off the urchin’s offer of something to eat, Phoebe clucked her tongue. ”Uncle Lawrence is confusing Auntie Phoebe with the sister he didn’t try hiding things from. I’d love some.” No, no, actually she wouldn’t, but she wanted to see Lawrence twist and as long as he did she could put up with the … ulk. The minute her hand was free she was wiping all of this off on Lawrence. Rodents were supposed to like peanut butter weren’t they?
Phoebe settled her other hand on the child’s hair for a moment, one seemingly clean spot on him. She bent slightly. ”It’s OK, you go do what Uncle Lawrence says. I’ll come visit later hmm? See that fort?” After she’d paid Lawrence back and gotten through the absolute awkwardness of coming face to face with the man she still hadn’t let down lightly (it wasn’t like she’d actually promised to).
The moment the child was gone, Phoebe gagged slightly and stepped closer to Lawrence to wipe the peanut butter off against his shirt. She’d have asked for Teddy’s towel if they’d been alone but this was awkward enough as it was with the spectre of her big brother right there. ”No, you didn’t,” she chided with that faint saccharine tone. ”Seems like you’ve forgotten to say a lot of things.” Forgotten with double quote marks around the razor sharp word.
Her eyes drifted pointedly to Teddy, softened slightly as they lit on him. ”Like the identity of your new room mate. I take it he didn’t tell you that I like to drop by and keep an eye on him when he said yes to this?” Her brows hitched, her whiskey eyes cutting sideways to the rat for the moment. ”You’re looking well.” There was a hint of warmth in her throat as she looked back to Teddy, her smile creasing as she took another look at him in the towel and t-shirt and remembered the lines of all that lean muscle when she’d peeled his clothes away that first, and only, time.

━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY THOUGHT HE’D NEVER been so uncomfortable in his whole life. Standing there half-naked, covered only by a towel that began to feel as though it was invisible, watching this family drama commence. He could’ve walked away━probably would have if Julian hadn’t been in the mix. His son was right in the thick of it, revealing himself to Phoebe (Teddy thought this would happen much later in their relationship and then, when he didn’t hear from her, not at all) and dragging her further inside with the offering of peanut butter. Thankfully, Lawrence came quickly, though it wasn’t fast enough.
And it didn’t necessarily help.
Phoebe went with Julian into the kitchen, leaving Teddy to scurry behind them, standing off to one side to avoid blocking Lawrence’s way. He had to do something about this, didn’t he? Couldn’t he? Julian was reaching up towards the jar on the counter, where the label was covered with an opaque layer of peanut butter. Just then, Lawrence convinced him out of it, earning a deep frown from the toddler.
She dropped hints, though, and in Teddy’s silence he considered what she might mean. Was this a surprise for her, too? Was it Lawrence’s way of squishing together the two people closest to him so they’d… become civil with one another? If it was, this was the worst way to go about it.
Julian looked up at Phoebe with a big smile, excited at the notion of showing off his fort━this meant he had a lot of work to do to impress her. “Otay!” He chimed, flashing the grin at Teddy before releasing Phoebe and wandering off to his bedroom.
A surprise to Phoebe might be different than to Teddy, but he still didn’t understand how she was taking it so well. She didn’t seem nearly as uncomfortable as he was, though that was what had attracted him to her at first. Then, her willingness to forgo all regular expectations in human interactions quickly bothered him. Teddy had to learn all etiquette only a few years ago, and even he knew that this wasn’t right. He wondered if being a vampire had anything to do with it━sometimes, Lawrence could be jaded and self-destructive as well.
Her gag had his frown deepening. Teddy didn’t assume it was directed exclusively to the peanut butter, only growing deep offence on behalf of his son. Julian was just a kid, he didn’t have the best manners (he had an excuse, unlike some people) and was excited to meet someone new; what was so wrong with that? Peanut butter could be washed off━but Phoebe resorted to wiping it on Lawrence’s shirt. “There’s a sink.” Teddy muttered, nodding to the stainless steel basin next to the jar of peanut butter.
Finally, she addressed Teddy directly, and his knuckles squeezed a little harder around the towel. “No, he didn’t.” Dark eyes cut sideways to Lawrence, aiming that frown in his direction now. It wasn’t long until it was back on Phoebe. “He also didn’t mention you don’t like kids. If you have a problem with Julian, you’re more than welcome to meet elsewhere.” Teddy didn’t like being rude, but she’d started in, and he wasn’t about to lay down and show his belly when it was his apartment. Actually, he didn’t plan on doing that with Phoebe ever again.
“Thanks.” Voice strained, Teddy thought about saying ‘I wish I could say the same about you,’ though that would not only be hurtful, but also a complete lie. His cheeks got a little redder at her compliment, and he had to turn his head down while forcing the smile away. He was still uncomfortable, but he also wished things could’ve been different for them━at the very least, that they wouldn’t be forced to see each other again. Clearly, he wasn’t getting any wishes this year.
“Are you two fine here, or…” Teddy took a backstep towards the entry to the kitchen, eyeing the pair as though they were keeping him hostage.

He had never been a huge fan of children, probably detaching himself from them on the realisation he would never have his own but he’d warmed to Julian pretty quickly. The first few times he visited Teddy’s apartment he would react just as Phoebe did, however he was much better at hiding his disgust as Julian reached up to say hello to him. He didn’t want to upset Teddy by jumping back immediately, so he would remain glued to the spot with a fake smile on his face that over time became genuine. On the other hand, his sister wore her emotions on her face and he knew she was dying to get that slimy substance off her hands as soon as the child broke free. She should have been thankful it was only peanut butter and not something else. He stepped back from Phoebe after she’d wiped her hands on his t-shirt. His jaw twitched, trying not to snap in front of Julian especially as she claimed he had been hiding things from her. Hardly. He was just cautious with what he told her, given the situation. He did it for Teddy more than Phoebe though. He knew his friend wouldn’t have reacted well in an awkward situation, but now it had been forced upon him. All of this could have been avoided if Lawrence had apologised to Teddy sooner, told him his sister was back and introduced the pair before they met elsewhere and hooked up. It made his stomach flip whenever he thought about it. Lawrence wore a forced smile on his face until Julian disappeared into his bedroom. Once the door clicked closed it dropped from his face. Both of them had a look of irritation on their faces as they looked at him. Like any of this was his fault. The pair of them exchanged words about Lawrence as if he wasn’t standing there in the room with them. “I assumed you knew she would be coming around sometimes.” Surely Teddy had some common sense rattling around when he offered his spare room to Lawrence. He looked over at Phoebe, “Sometimes… not all the time… and you don’t need to keep an eye on me. I managed to look after myself perfectly fine for the past… fuck knows how many decades.” Perfectly fine was a slight exaggeration considering the number of times he went over the edge. An edge he was now teetering on with Hannya in his life. He was the one who needed to keep an eye on Phoebe. Partying every weekend in the club, kissing various different people, dragging herself home at sunrise. Granted, he wasn’t all that surprised given how rebellious she’d been as a child but it still didn’t stop him from worrying about her. She would There was a roll of his eyes when Phoebe complimented Teddy, like that was going to make everything okay. The tension was growing with each passing second and Lawrence felt like he was the only one who could do anything about it. He despised how everything had transpired. When he came over to Teddy’s apartment and told him about his sister he imagined they’d all be good friends. Movie nights at Teddy’s apartment or brunch at the Grill. Instead his best friend and his sister wanted to avoid each other like the plague. “Look. You two need to sort this out because I’m not gonna keep tiptoeing around because you both got drunk one night and… y’know… please.” His gaze immediately darted over to his sister, eyes widening slightly telling her she was the one who needed to apologise. Teddy had nothing wrong in this situation, everyone knew that. PHOEBE MURPHY - i said poor teddy but actually poor lawrence </3

Here lies Phoebe Murphy (or Jones, or Wierzbowski, or whatever the surname of whoever her parents had somehow convinced to marry her was). Wife, mother, grandmother. Terribly missed.
Phoebe supposed that her epitaph would’ve been that unimpressive, and stifling if the vampires had never crept into the valley. Her parents would’ve always had grandchildren on the cards for her, their little back up plan, just in case Lawrence didn’t manage to produce the next generation of well behaved little witches and warlocks to lead the coven towards the next millennium. They’d have shackled her with it all, walling her in with the notion of family so she spent the rest of her days standing with her nose pressed up against the invisible wall sealing them all into the village.
She studied the child clinging to her hand with those filthy fingers, her gaze flicking up to Teddy as Julian reached for the peanut butter. Was it less disgusting when they’d popped from your own loins? Like you didn’t wretch as spit and mushed up peanuts smeared onto your skin (or worse)? Probably. She hadn’t been trapped in her parents plan though, the bite had shattered those walls and guaranteed she was never going to reproduce.
Whiskey coloured eyes narrowed at Lawrence. He didn’t seem to have half the trouble with this that she did, that was suspicious all on its own. By the time she looked back down at Julian, the smile was back, the question filed away to fire at Lawrence like a bullet later. She touched the boy at least, not scrubbing that hand off on her dress, or Julian himself, as her reassurance – only needed because Lawrence had tried to kick her straight under a bus – had worked on him. Phoebe kept up the act until Julian disappeared through the door, then the act was falling to pieces, that gag rolling up as she wiped the hellish combo on Lawrence’s shirt.
A sink? What for? Phoebe looked back at Teddy, brows hitching like he’d suddenly appeared from nowhere until realisation dawned. She shrugged, inspecting her fingers for a moment before she wiggled them at him. ”No need, all clean.” For the moment. She’d be scrubbing the remnants off in her brother’s tears by the time she’d torn a couple of layers of skin off of him for hiding the punch line here. From the two most important people in his life it seemed.
Phoebe’s lips twitched, her eyes dropping pointedly as her gaze had slid over Teddy, leaving him squirming enough to tighten his grip on the towel. Worried that she’d peel it off of him like she’d done his clothes in her dorm room, fingers trailing the lean frame until she pressed herself right up against it again? Lawrence deserved to squirm, but really, she had a little more control than that. ”What happens when you assume, Lawrence? Ass, out of you and me … and Teddy.” Apparently they were supposed to be psychic.
As Teddy’s voice sharpened, actually diving under her shields to scratch her a little, Phoebe reached out and gave her brother a shove to the shoulder. ”Look what you’ve done now. He wouldn’t have done, because I don’t have a problem with kids, especially yours.” Her scowl sharpened at Lawrence. Would she have said she actually liked kids? No, but that was splitting peanut butter smeared hairs, wasn’t it? She hadn’t gagged until that mess had been on her hands and Julian had already toddled out of the room. That had to give her some points here.
Her arms curling over her chest, Phoebe softened the blow enough to have Teddy thanking her – of course he would, that sweet underbelly would likely have him saying please and thank you to everything, along with the softer slide of ‘sorry’. Words that always took a push to get out of her own mouth. Her head tilted, that same dry really look on her face as she side eyed her brother. ”Looked after yourself so well that some random thief managed to steal your ring with a little finger sucking. I think your definitely of ‘perfectly fine’ and mine are two very different things.” Phoebe said the words sweetly, although there should’ve been an ‘I told you so’ stamped right on his forehead.
All of a sudden both Teddy and Lawrence seemed to be aiming to scoot out on the other, leaving her to clear up both problems here. God. Rolling her eyes, Phoebe took a step towards Teddy. Her left hand extending, index finger aimed to skewer her brother in place, her right reached out to slip two fingers into the top of Teddy’s towel in warning. ”Or,” she chose. ”If this is the way the pair of you treat visitors, it’s no wonder you can’t keep them around.” She pointedly evaded the fact that she’d been the one to ghost Teddy, of course.
Phoebe’s lips curled faintly, her hair tossed back over one shoulder as she eyed Lawrence. ”You’re going to cringe every time the subject of me sleeping with Teddy comes up instead? I think this is a conversation for all of us. Were you ever going to tell me about Teddy or were you hoping for this? I come around, its just me and Teddy here and we hash it out so your best friend’s bruised heart gets mended and perhaps you earn yourself a brother-in-law finally? If that was your plan it’s a rotten one. Look at how uncomfortable you’re making Teddy now.” Clucking her tongue at her brother, Phoebe rubbed the backs of her fingers lightly back and forth beneath the snug rim of the towel, like she was soothing the man she’d already made more uncomfortable than Lawrence probably ever could.

━ i started to dream again ━ THIS WAS ANOTHER REASON HE SHOULD’VE never moved on from Octavia. Being a widower suited him. It was hard to date when you had a child, and even harder when you got ghosted by a woman who turned out to be your best friend’s sister. Teddy had only been out a handful of times━alright, once, and she’d vanished, too━and every time seemed like a bust. He was ready to throw in the proverbial towel. Not the actual one around his waist, but the saying that was pretty common. He didn’t really understand it. It probably had something to do with sports.
“And I assumed you would’ve let me know first.” Sure, maybe Lawrence couldn’t have warned Teddy because he didn’t know, but perhaps he could’ve mentioned that he’d told his sister he’d moved or… something. This wasn’t just Teddy’s home, it was the one he shared with his child, and Lawrence was well aware of how dangerous it could become for Julian.
Especially yours. Teddy tried not to take it to heart. He cringed, hoping that (somehow) tensing up his body would form a protective layer over himself that Phoebe’s words would just bounce off of. It wasn’t mean, obviously, which was the entire problem. It made a little fire of hopefulness start in his chest, and he immediately felt stupid for it. Phoebe was just toying with him, with both of them, which seemed to be her favourite game. Teddy didn’t really know enough about people to be able to do the same, and he didn’t appreciate silver-tongued sirens.
Or… wasn’t supposed to be an option. It was supposed to be an escape, a wordless ‘okay, bye’ that allowed him to race out of his own kitchen. It didn’t matter at the minute; he’d relinquish his hold on his apartment if it meant Lawrence could get Phoebe out, like coaxing an animal through the door just to quickly slam it behind them. Maybe they needed that peanut butter after all.
Teddy gulped audibly as Phoebe’s cool fingers moved beneath his towel, suddenly chilling his shower-warmed skin. “There’s a difference between ‘intruder’ and ‘visitor.’” He squeaked. Unfortunately, Teddy seemed to have an abundance of the former. Perhaps he needed more friends than just Lawrence.
He didn’t dare to move, pinned to the spot with Phoebe’s… no, he had to not think about it, otherwise Lawrence would get even more uncomfortable than he already was. Actually, Teddy would probably be ready to find a whole new place to live. It would be difficult to get a passport, but he might be able to manage it. No more Mystic Falls, no more United States. He and Julian could go somewhere no one would find them.
Running, however, proved futile. One half-step and Teddy’s towel was slipping, the knotted edge ending up useless under Phoebe’s fingers. If he couldn’t take three steps in his apartment, how the hell would he run to another country? Something akin to a whimper slipped out of Teddy’s mouth, both hands reaching forward to clutch both sides of his towel before it could slide any lower than Phoebe’s palm. A bit too much skin showed, but then he was hiking it up, breath catching nervously in his throat. He only heard part of Phoebe’s spiel, shooting her a desperate look before his attention turned on Lawrence. “I hate to agree with her,” Teddy mumbled, the clearly as loud as it was silent. “But I thought we would communicate better… and not hide things from one another.” He frowned, not eager for a repeat of the night he met Phoebe. He’d been so incredibly lonely, and it was all because Lawrence was embarrassed.
“But, um, honestly, you’re both making me uncomfortable.” Dark eyes flicked back to Phoebe, not totally aware that she was just teasing her brother. “And my heart isn’t bruised.” He said, shielding the very thing he denied, “I just don’t like liars and people who aren’t accountable. It isn’t right. I thought we had a nice time, but it turns out you didn’t feel the same way, and now we’re forced to see each other again.” Teddy paused, still frowning heavily, then added, “I guess your plan didn’t work out so well, but it’s not fun for me, either.” Apparently, Lawrence’s supposed plan was working after all.

He’d been living with Teddy for all of five seconds and the conversation about his sister hadn’t exactly crept up yet, so he hadn’t even had the chance to tell Teddy that Phoebe might visit every now and then, whilst his friend was out the house. The same way he was going to tell Phoebe that his new housemate was Teddy. He didn’t expect this situation to play out quiet so quickly. It was news to him that Phoebe didn’t have a problem with children, especially ones that wiped peanut butter all over her, but he was certain she was only saying that to keep Teddy happy and to make him look bad in some way. Maybe as a human Lawrence would have been a decent parent, not that he would have been given a choice. His parents would have pestered him until he gave them a grandchild. No doubt they would have been given the same speech to Phoebe as well. They needed to keep their lineage going, whether they wanted kids or not. One side was cut when Lawrence died, then a few years later their precious bloodline was severed completely. Lawrence pressed his lips together into a thin line as Teddy hinted that his sister was intruding in his apartment, whilst her fingers were wrapped around the top of his towel. “Phoebe.” He snapped in a warning tone, looking over at her as she teased Teddy. Trying to make him blush, again. He wanted to snap at Teddy too and remind him that he was the one who put the apartment in Julian’s name and if he’d spoken to Lawrence about it beforehand he would have told his friend it was a bad idea. He had no right in telling Teddy what to do with his apartment, but handing it over to a child covered in peanut butter wasn’t wise. In fact, his silent point was unfolding in front of their very eyes. Phoebe was inside. Lawrence’s mouth hung open in disbelief. They were now agreeing with each other and turning on him. “Fu—” There was a child in the vicinity, with listening ears, “I’m not hiding anything… Phoebe, obviously I was going to tell you I was living at Teddy’s but I haven’t had the chance because I haven’t seen you recently… and Teddy, I thought it would be pretty obvious that my sister might come over from time to time since I haven’t seen her for decades because I thought she was dead.” His response came out a little more strained and cutting than he anticipated, but this was on them. Not him. Both making him uncomfortable? He sighed loudly, making his way towards the kitchen to grab a sponge off the side and attempt to get the peanut butter off his top. If the sun wasn’t soaring in the sky he would have stormed out of the apartment by now. His eyes darted up towards Teddy, with a burning urge to tell his friend not to call his sister a liar, but that would only add fuel to an already burning fire. “You’re not forced to see each other.” He looked down at his top as he scrubbed away furiously, “I can meet Phoebe elsewhere, that way there’s no chance of you bumping into her and us both making you feel uncomfortable.” The peanut butter wasn’t coming out, but rather just smearing across his top. He threw the sponge back in the sink. The frustration he felt towards Phoebe a minute ago had now bounced over to Teddy. PHOEBE MURPHY TEDDY AARONSON

At any other time Phoebe would’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with her brother against anybody else. The rest of their family was literally and figuratively dead to them, and had been from the moment they’d sent their children out into the world changed, with nothing but a bespelled ring on their finger, but even before they it had been the two of them holding the line against the family expectations. Perhaps one day Lawrence would still have ended up leading their coven and she would have sprouted a half dozen children to make sure the line didn’t peter out, it wouldn’t have changed the bond between them too.
Yet, as Lawrence attempted to throw both her and Teddy under the bus over what was obviously his screw up, Phoebe smiled victoriously over Teddy’s grip. She smiled sweetly at her brother, as it to say see – your problem! Only it wasn’t, not really. Lawrence had made it hers – alright, maybe she’d made her own when she’d left Teddy in her bed that morning after – but him being Teddy’s best friend was what had added the thickest layer of awkwardness here. There wasn’t room for the two of them in Lawrence’s life if there was this minefield between them.
Phoebe might have been focused on herself the majority of the time, or seemed to, but Teddy’s cringe hadn’t escaped her. She wasn’t impervious, despite those appearances. They had to find a way through here, today preferably, she wouldn’t shuffle back out of her brother’s life or act like whole parts of it didn’t exist because she’d damaged a few egos.
Her fingers in Teddy’s towel were her anchor here until this was thrashed out. Phoebe’s brows rose, her lips curving with Teddy’s attempt to classify her as an intruder. As though Julian hadn’t invited her right in. ”Lawrence,” she shot back, her tone far sweeter than her brother’s. ”Do you want to remind Teddy that I can’t go where I’m not invited, or should I?” Like Teddy would’ve forgotten what vampirism was like. Being wanted by a child and two grown men were very different things, of course. She hadn’t ghosted the child – that would’ve been a cruelty she wasn’t capable of, no matter what feelings Teddy thought she had towards the boy. Or lack of them.
Discomfort seemed to be working its way deeper than just how far her fingers had invaded, enough that Teddy tried to pull away from her. Not so clingy now, was he? Phoebe made a little hushing noise, like she was trying to soothe a fractious child. Her thumb joined the connection, brushing in an arc towards his belly button as Teddy clutched at the towel. ”Careful,” Phoebe sing-songed. ”It’s getting a little … slippery in here.” Especially for Lawrence in a room where his footing as the centre of this little triangle was suddenly growing treacherous.
Her head tilting, Phoebe sharpened her smile at her brother. Lawrence hadn’t hidden much from her, except for this little development, which made the whole thing all the more suspicious. ”It’s really not that painful,” Phoebe muttered lightly. As though her opinion were a bear trap and stepping into it would sever a limb. ”Weren’t you the one to tell me we all needed to communicate more, Lawrence?” Of course at the time it had been a shove towards her calling Teddy and patching all of this up before it got this far, but that was just splitting hairs. The only thing doing much on the concealment front in the kitchen now was the towel and its abilities on that front were dubious.
Hazel eyes started to drift down Teddy’s chest, towards that scatter of dark hair she mapped on her way down the last time, disappearing beneath the top edge of his towel. A study that was cut off with Lawrence’s complaint. As though what she was doing hadn’t been painfully obvious, Phoebe’s gaze snapped back up to her brother’s. ”As you reminded me, there are these things called phones now. I get that one finger’s lighter than the others but all it would have taken was six little words … Phoebe, I’ve moved in with Teddy. See, not hard?” Something was though and Teddy was uncomfortable with it … unlike the last time.
Sighing heavily, Phoebe considered drawing her fingers back. She tapped her fingertips against the taut surface of skin and muscle, rolling her eyes eventually before she met Teddy’s. ”Did I ever say I didn’t have a nice time?” Semantics again. After the morning after she hadn’t said that she had. ”My plan?” Forced.
All of this had grown twisted and bitter, like thorns working their way deeper until you’d almost tear your skin to get them out. ”I would’ve hoped it was want more than forced, but I guess I read everything with Teddy wrongly,” Phoebe said, her voice almost cold as she tried to hide the fact that both of them had merrily jabbed those thorns deeper, like they wanted to make sure she could feel it. ”Oh, don’t you worry. When Lawrence wants to see me, he knows where I am … without roommates to worry about.” Just that empty room that Teddy had filled for a night.
Phoebe gave the top of Teddy’s towel a fond little tug before she let go and went to step past him. Shoulders back, head up, like all of this rolled off like the shower water that had beaded and worked its way down Teddy’s skin. ”I’ll let the two of you patch this up. I know where I’m welcome … it was a pleasure again, Teddy.” She patted his chest as she slipped past, barely enough room in the doorway for the two of them. ”It was a pleasure meeting you too, Julian. Sorry I can’t stay.” Pausing at the boy’s bedroom door she smiled, wiggling fingers at him. Intruder indeed.

━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY KNEW, ON SOME LEVEL, THAT PHOEBE was manipulating him because he didn’t know any better. Though he tried hard to learn, he was mostly ignorant about the modern world and the typical ways of life. Though they’d had similar upbringings, Lawrence and Phoebe both had far more time than he did to grow accustomed to it. Not only that, but they shifted and grew with each decade that passed, allowing them to reinvent themselves and learn new things as they approached. Teddy didn’t have that luxury.
He also didn’t have the luxury of privacy as Phoebe’s thumb slipped up his belly. A shudder went through his whole body, forcing him to be… even more uncomfortable in front of his best friend. Even though he didn’t like Phoebe much, it was still easier with her, perhaps a little better━she’d seen it all before, anyway.
His knuckles went white around the towel’s edge, gripping so hard he worried he’d burn right through the fabric and stab himself in the palms. Another whine emerged, pure pain this time as he bent slightly, trying to hide his embarrassment━if at all possible.
Was Lawrence mad at him now? He seemed to throw out the ‘dead sister’ excuse, which had Teddy furrowing his brows and momentarily focusing on something other than his towel (and its current lack of security). “That isn’t fair. All I asked was that you warn me first.” Now, though, Teddy didn’t want her around at all. Goddess, he didn’t even want Lawrence around anymore! (Though, he figured the latter was more temporary)
‘Did I ever say I didn’t have a nice time?’
“No, you ceased to say anything at all, which is the problem.” He grumbled, shaking his head. She was pressing again, toying, and Teddy couldn’t help but fall victim to her traps.
As Lawrence scrubbed peanut butter from his shirt, he seemed to grow colder. Phoebe, too. Teddy was quite aware he was becoming angry, but that was heat and passion for his argument, not a desire to hurt either of them. He’d never see Lawrence become so bitter. Why was it Teddy’s fault that he felt uncomfortable in his own home? All he wanted was to voice his opinions to his best friend and be heard. Teddy would never throw it back in Lawrence’s face, but he’d done plenty of questionable things, and Teddy fought to put his judgements on the back burner and be there for him.
He frowned, not finding the words to express how he felt before Phoebe started up again. He wasn’t sure why his knee-jerk reaction was to correct her, to claim that no, she hadn’t misread him, that he’d had a great time. Instead, Teddy clamped his lips together and tried desperately not to let the weakness seep out.
Yelping as she tugged again, Phoebe finally released him and Teddy straightened up, letting out little puffs of air, happy to be free of her. Before fully departing, though, she patted his chest and Teddy curled in as if he’d been punched, a little worried her palm would bring a lot more force with it. He watched her go, giving Lawrence a worried glance.
“Bye-bye, Phoebe!” He heard Julian call back, missing the B in her name so it sounded like ‘Fee-ee.’ “I’ll make sure this’s done when I seeya next!” There was a clatter of legos, waved at Phoebe in a goodbye, and, eventually, Teddy heard the door and released a long breath.
His gaze moved to Lawrence, mouth still shaped into a frown. He wasn’t sure what to say━there was clear tension here, unrest, but it wouldn’t be settled immediately. He didn’t know how it would be, only that he had to go change━perhaps take another shower. Scurrying from the kitchen to the bathroom, Teddy escaped the awkward situation like a rat fleeing the scene.
