For a while now Leah had been ignoring most of Death’s little calls. She would pick a soul every now and then, but that wasn’t her priority anymore. She was focused on getting Raik back and doing something about Grey and Destiny. Her hatred towards the couple was eating her alive. She still couldn’t understand why they attacked Raik in such a way. Her non-biological dad provided her with some kind of answer though. Something about druids choosing to take a darker path and having to kill people. There was no surprise to hear that Grey would take such a path, but Destiny? She seemed too innocent and was probably being manipulated by Grey. She tried to warn the sweet girl on the picnic blanket to stay away from Grey, but she chose to ignore Leah’s warning. Even going to the extreme of carrying Grey’s child. Leah had never been good at controlling her anger. Act then consider the consequences later was usually her way with approaching everything in life. Apart from Grey. She wanted to take her time with him, but maybe she’d taken too much time. Allowing herself to become distracted by Remzi and her reaper duties. As a result, Raik’s dead body was lying in a freezer. She could have taken her half-brother out the moment she arrived in Mystic Falls, but instead, she decided to play games with him and Destiny. She was ready to finish what she started all those years ago, but perhaps death was a consequence far too kind for the pair. The need for revenge was strong before but now it was a must. Not even for her own sake, but for Remzi too. Raik’s death had driven the pair closer to each other to the point Leah openly admitted she cared for the vampire. She cared so much she was willing to risk everything to bring Raik back by ignoring the little bell ringing inside her head. Countless lost spirits out there waiting to be taken to their final resting place, but they were being left. Waiting for someone else to come and pick them up. She knew it wouldn’t be long until Death found out, meaning she had to get everything in order before that day came. Leah was capable of talking her way out of anything, but her flirtatious charm didn’t exactly work on the boss. There was never any weight behind the promises made by Leah, but she wasn’t prepared to break the one she made to Remzi. Raik alive, Destiny and Grey dealt with. First, she’d go after the weaker half of the pair. Destiny. She wasn’t going in unprepared either like she did that day in the park. Armed with mountain ash, chloroform and a secluded warehouse hundreds of miles from Mystic Falls. There was no chance Remzi was going to stab her in the back either this time. They were on the same team and for once she actually trusted him. It was an uncomfortable feeling, but one she was willing to embrace for him. What she was doing to Destiny would probably amount to stalking, but it wasn’t as if the other girl could see her lurking in the shadows. Invisible to the naked eye. Leah decided to wait until Destiny was leaving Grey’s apartment one evening. It was surprising the couple had chosen to stay in town knowing there were two people out there wanting them dead. She knew the exact route Destiny took home and she knew the quietest spot to appear behind Destiny, cover her mouth and teleport out of there without anyone noticing. The girl was a dead weight against Leah’s small frame, with extra weight from the bump too. It wasn’t difficult to move Destiny to the chair in the warehouse and tie her down using cable ties. First her ankles then her wrists. There was a small smile on Leah’s face as she was doing so, feeling like she was in some kind of action movie. She sprinkled a small circle around Destiny of mountain ash. She stood a few feet in front of Destiny, growing impatient waiting for the girl to stir. Had she used too much chloroform? She didn’t exactly do any research before dousing the cloth. Leah clapped loudly, “Wake up bitch.” She stepped forward, one hand reaching for Destiny’s shoulder as she shook her harshly. “Finally. I thought you were never gonna wake up.” Leah stepped back again, both hands interlocked behind her back, watching Destiny carefully. “Did you really think you’d get away with killing Raik? Oh, yeah, by the way the guy you killed his name was Raik not Remzi. You killed Remzi’s brother.” She brought her hands forward, glancing down at her fresh manicure, giving Destiny a moment to get her bearings. “How does it feel to have killed someone?” She moved across the room, grabbing the other chair that was situated near the wall. She hiked it up before walking back, the heels of her boots dragging across the concrete floor causing an echo in the empty room. She placed the chair down in front of Destiny. She sat down, one leg folded over the other. Her hands rested lightly on her knee as her eyes were fixed on Destiny. “Raik was a military man y’know. Went to all those wars, served for his country and all that shit. He was as pure as they came… a little bit boring but heart of gold. Remzi said something about his brother saving some kids after their school was blown up.” Just speaking about Remzi’s brother was stirring a rage inside of her. “You’re worse than me. I had a reason to kill my dad and go after Grey, but you went after Raik for no reason.” She felt her nails dig slightly in his skin, as the fury was rising. The emotion. ━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ HER HEAD HURT TERRIBLY, and as Destiny came to, she realized it wasn’t just because of all the crying. But there was that, as well━her eye sockets felt like they’d been hollowed out. Her chest, too. All its contents were left behind in Grey’s apartment with the only one who’d truly had them in years.
Something was wrong. Not just with that, but physically. Destiny tried to bring her hands to her belly, wanting to check on Petyr, but they were stuck. Her head lolled sideways, then up, straight, and she wondered why it felt so fucking heavy.
‘Wake up, bitch.’
Oh, are you fucking joking? Really? Now?
Destiny groaned━there was no doubt when she heard that irritating, high-pitched voice━as Leah shook her. It was almost sick how she immediately wanted to be with Grey again, especially after everything she’d only just said to him. It didn’t excuse the shit he’d pulled tonight, but she’d effectively isolated herself.
“For an awful pain in the ass, you have impeccable timing.” Destiny muttered, fruitlessly tugging on her restraints, trying to rub at her eyes. She thought she was trapped before while in Grey’s hold━she’d much rather that than this. Destiny blinked slowly once her eyes peeled open, scanning her surroundings. It was relatively empty (save for her bag in the corner), industrial, and completely abandoned. Her eyes ticked back to Leah, brow furrowing, trying to focus on the blonde despite the pain radiating at her temples.
“What?” She asked. Leah’s words permeated slowly, and Destiny was one step behind with each bit of information released. “No, we… his name was Remzi. Your boyfriend.” Destiny puffed tiredly, trying to sort through everything Leah was saying while the mental cloud slowly lifted. Her head tipped back as Leah brought her own chair over, staring lazily at the ceiling. “Felt great taking something from you, and then powerful as fuck when I slit his throat.” Her voice was bored, almost like she didn’t care, though there was a thread of venom to it. Bringing her chin down again, she raised a brow at Leah. Destiny wasn’t in the fucking mood for this, not after everything, and she wouldn’t show Leah any of the softness beneath; the guilt she felt for killing Remzi, how awful it was to go through that again, and then two more lives taken right after.
Leah was trying to make her feel bad about it. Seriously, this bitch was trying to stir up some sort of remorse. “Yeah, a medic. I know.” He was a healer, a required sacrifice. Destiny felt awful for doing it, but clearly the guy had some sort of shitty side if he was getting with her.
‘You’re worse than me. I had a reason to kill my dad and go after Grey, but you went after Raik for no reason.’
Destiny let out a sharp, condescending laugh, giving Leah an incredulous expression. “You had a reason to go after two people who never did shit to you?” She scoffed, “Your mom stepped out on her husband━how is that Grey’s fault? You’re just a psychopathic bitch. I’m not playing this fucking game with you.” Destiny leaned forward in her chair, squinting partly from the lights and partly in a glare. She didn’t get very far anyway, not with that big belly impeding her. “My reason for sacrificing Remzi was protecting myself and my baby from you. And the fact that you came for me first. Don’t act like it was out of nowhere.”
Wiggling her fingers, she made a fist and released it over and over, trying to bring a bit of feeling to them. They weren’t necessary for the use of her abilities, but it was still better to have free reign instead of being bound. Actually, anything was better than this. Destiny spotted the ring of mountain ash on the ground and frowned, remembering its importance from her lessons with Grey. Great.
“Let me go,” She sighed, eyes ticking up to Leah’s, angry that she had to beg for her freedom more than once tonight. “At least release my wrists. You’ve got me in a circle of mountain ash, so obviously I’m not going anywhere.” Destiny muttered, giving the zip ties two more tugs. She wanted to do that outside check on Petyr, and she needed the brain fog to melt away. Would the healing ability pulled from her boyfriend help that? Oh, that was fucking ironic. Destiny let it bleed through her, just as he had all over her hands, forcing the confusion and tiredness to dissipate and release her. Destiny breathed slowly, concentrating almost all of her energy on making sure Petyr was still wrapped up and protected.

Leah hadn’t taken much care of Destiny’s belongings when she tossed the handbag in the corner like it was trash. She took a little bit more care when securing Destiny to the chair though due to the massive bump balancing on the front of the other girl’s frame. Another child for a Maddox to ruin. She was hoping to kill Grey before he had an opportunity to spread his DNA anywhere. Hopefully, Destiny would see sense soon and run away with the offspring, giving it a chance. She had built an image of Destiny in her head long before the pair crossed paths. She’d been watching the girl for a while and came to the conclusion that Destiny was good-natured and kind, but far too trusting of others. She was convinced it would be Destiny’s ultimate downfall, but now she also had blood on her hands. When she found Raik’s body shattered the image she had of Destiny. “Sorry. I’ll be sure to text you next time.” She spoke through gritted teeth, watching as Destiny tried to tug herself free. “Let’s clear one thing up. Remzi is not my boyfriend.” She was quick to retort. Destiny’s tone irked her even more causing her to let out a cold laugh. “No. You killed Remzi’s brother, Raik. Remzi’s still breathing. So you took fuck all from me, darling.” What felt powerful as fuck was telling Destiny that she’d messed up. It was bliss. She slid her phone out of her back pocket, “Hang on.” Her nails tapped on the screen for a few seconds before turning the phone to Destiny. She’d pulled up Raik’s Instagram, “See. Raik.” She swiped through a few posts, pausing for a second on each picture. Some were solo shots, others were pictures of him with his family. “Mama and Papa Durmaz are gonna be devastated.” Leah locked her phone again, sliding it back into her pocket. She winged a brow as Destiny told her she knew Raik was a medic already confirming her suspicion that Grey and his bitch were sacrificing people for more power. Then Destiny threw the word sacrifice out there. Whatever the fuck the pair were doing for more power she didn’t care, but their actions were bleeding into her life by a fraction. It was laughable that they went after Raik thinking they were taking something from Leah. The only thing they’d done is push Remzi and Leah closer. She was quick to get to her feet when Destiny scoffed, saying she had no reason to go after her dad. “My dad, Grey’s dad, was ruining our pack. The night he turned up at our house he was looking for a fight. He came armed with wolfsbane and everything. I was protecting my pack.” Leah only snapped when Malcolm went for her non-biological dad. The man who raised her as his own despite knowing the truth and the man who didn’t even deserve the name dad. “Grey was going to tell the pack the truth about my mum’s affair.” She couldn’t watch her non-biological dad go through all that pain. The pack knowing his wife turned her back on him and climbed into bed with Malcolm. “So, I was protecting myself and my family from Grey and his dad.” She kept her voice level and calm as she spoke even though she was furious. Recalling the story of what happened between her family and the Maddox’s always stirred emotion deep inside. She wasn’t born a psychopathic bitch, but life had forced her to become one. Leah shook her head in response to Destiny’s request. She knew the mountain ash could hold her back, but she didn’t want to do anything to give the other girl the upper hand. “What’re you gonna tell the ankle-biter when they’re older? Mummy and daddy went on a killing spree for more power? In fact, how many people have you killed now? You need a few to complete the whole weird ass ritual right?” DESTINY BACCARI

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ HONESTLY, DESTINY WASN’T EVEN being sarcastic. It was almost funny how on-point Leah was with her interruption. Destiny wasn’t any more likely to give up Grey, of course━despite their fight, and the painful severing, she still loved him. She wouldn’t turn her back on him so easily, especially not to Leah.
Tipping her head forward again, she smirked sourly at the whole ‘Remzi’s-not-my-boyfriend’ thing. Yeah, Grey wasn’t Destiny’s boyfriend, either━the label didn’t really mean shit. The smirk fell at the sight of Leah’s phone, however, tired eyes narrowing at the screen. The username ‘raiknotrake’ at the top, the multitude of posts… no, this was more of Leah’s bullshit, and Destiny wasn’t going to fall for it. She shook her head slowly, careful not to jostle it too much and cause more pain. “Fuck off. I don’t believe you. He told Grey his name was Raik, and that that guy’s name is Remzi. Was Remzi.” She paused, then laughed, “And if he lied, then he’s probably an even shittier sibling than you are.” Her trust was still with Grey. Maybe it shouldn’t have been, not with everything that’d only just come to light, but that was different. An undefined relationship was different than taking somebody’s life.
Despite her employee digging into Grey’s background and attempting to slander his reputation, Leah’s bullshit, and everything that only just happened, Grey would never lose her loyalty, her belief in him. Letting go of that felt like releasing a piece of herself, of the life she’d built in Mystic Falls, and she wouldn’t do that━not to either of them.
‘... I was protecting my pack.’
Destiny smiled sourly at Leah’s obvious display of emotion━the way she jumped from her chair to defend her actions. Grey hadn’t told her this much detail, but she was sure the three of them could agree that he wasn’t the best father. Their family curse, though━that wasn’t anybody’s fault. She let Leah finish her story, waiting for a good explanation as to why Grey deserved this, but, as expected, she came up with nothing. “And?” She frowned, “He was gonna tell them the truth, so he should die for that? A couple of words wouldn’t threaten you or your family. He didn’t deserve that.”
She tugged harder on her restraints, then paused and focused her energy on the chair. Destiny was cleared of the brain fog now, and so she could easily break the wooden arms. With a quick jerk of her hands upwards as the wood broke downwards, the zip-ties snapped under the tension. She’d seen a video about it somewhere, at some point in her life, where a woman broke her zip-tie bindings by driving her knee upwards between her wrapped wrists. Obviously, Destiny’s hands weren’t bound together, so she had to come up with her own version.
Sighing heavily with relief, she pressed both palms to her belly, rubbing it in little circles to soothe herself. “That’s better.” She sneered. Despite her outwards appearance, Destiny was doing everything in her power not to tremble beneath Leah’s gaze. She didn’t want to fear the stupid bitch, but now Destiny felt utterly alone. It was unlikely Grey could find her here anyway, but now she wondered why he’d even want to. He wasn’t looking for her━he was in his apartment thinking she never wanted to see him again.
She knew she was lying when she said she didn’t want him, but now Destiny knew she needed him. Not just now, but forever. She couldn’t go on without Grey in her life.
“Don’t talk about my baby.” Snapping the same words she’d said to JJ, except with far more unrestrained venom, Destiny clenched her jaw tightly. The sacrifices were for him, everything was for Petyr, and he’d never have to know or do any of it━like Grey said. Promised.
“What about you, huh?” Destiny asked instead, blue eyes narrowing up at Leah. She was still bound at the ankles, but she had no desire to break free and have nowhere to sit━she assumed she’d be here for a while. “I bet the number’s reached ridiculous levels considering you like to make up stupid reasons to excuse murder. And you’re not a werewolf anymore… so what are you? Do they only let psychopaths join your new little club?” Her smile was sickly sweet, taunting. She almost hoped Leah crossed the circle so she could take her down.
Destiny didn’t want to encroach on Grey's rivalry with his sister, or the fact that Leah was supposed to be his demon to be rid of, but Leah had involved her. And, if it came down to protecting Petyr, Destiny was pretty sure Grey could forgive her for stealing the spotlight.

Of course the stupid bitch wasn’t going to believe Leah, even when she was scrolling through Raik’s Instagram and now she was throwing it back at her. Back at Remzi. “Remzi told Grey his name was Raik and that Raik was Remzi. Stupid idea yeah, but how was he supposed to know you were gonna slit his brother's throat?” What Remzi did wasn’t that bad. He fucked up but there was no way he could have foreseen the consequences. She wouldn’t let him bear any blame in this situation. It rested heavily on her shoulders and her shoulders alone. “You robbed the world of a good person. A family of their son.” Remzi of his brother. Every time she looked at him she could see the flicker of pain behind his eyes. When she dragged Destiny into the warehouse there was a part of her that was considering showing an ounce of mercy to the other girl. Telling herself that Destiny was being controlled by Grey and it wasn’t her fault she was so damn trusting and craving love. That changed as she looked at the sly smirk on Destiny’s face. Leah rolled her eyes in frustration. Grey had probably only shared half the story with Destiny, just like Leah had with Remzi and everyone else around her. “He brought it on himself just like his dad did.” The truth ruined her life, planning something dark deep inside her which had grown over time. Grown to the point she was threatening a pregnant woman in an abandoned warehouse. “I’m wasting my breath with you anyway. It’s clear Grey has already painted me as the big bad villain.” Manipulated her into believing he was a good person. “Ooo. We love a strong woman. Using the hands you used to cut Raik’s throat” Leah said in a mocking tone as Destiny broke herself free of her restraints. One blink and she could be inside that circle snapping Destiny’s neck or even better exercising that killing touch she apparently had. The mention of their unborn child brought emotion to the surface for Destiny causing a smirk to pull at the corner of Leah’s red-painted lips. Poor baby had no chance in life. Destiny swerved the question, throwing it back at Leah only causing the smirk to grow wider on her face. “Please. I’ve only ever killed one person. My dad” She said proudly, folding her arms across her chest and resting back on the seat of the chair. The invisible contract she signed with Death prevented her from killing anyone so the number remained at a solid one. “I’m a reaper. I collect people’s souls after they die to take them to heaven or hell. That’s how I found out about Raik.” Out of all the jobs she could have been called to that day it had to be Raik’s dead body. He looked so scared standing over in the corner, even more, scared when she announced he was dead. Now he was lingering in limbo somewhere. Waiting to be brought back as Leah had promised. “You're gonna go to hell when you die by the way. Killing someone is a pretty big no-no and secures you a one-way ticket to hell… even if you were doing it to protect your ‘family’” She brought her fingers up, mocking quotation marks when she said, family. “You’ve killed people, innocent people, to get more power. That’s pretty fucked up. So don’t sit there pretending you’re a good person because you’re not.” At least Leah owned the fact she was a bitch. She didn’t hide behind any false personality like Destiny was. DESTINY BACCARI

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ “I DUNNO, MAYBE BY not being a dumbass?” Destiny scoffed, “He knew the relationship between you and Grey, and he knew enough to tell Grey to keep me from going to work ‘cause you were gonna be there.” She wondered, briefly, if that was just a setup, though that wouldn’t really make sense. Either way, her boyfriend was an idiot. Destiny hoped the guilt ate him alive.
Brought it on himself. Oh, Destiny wanted to reach over and squeeze Leah’s throat until she dropped dead. Her fingers curled into her palms, making fists and likely creating half-moon marks from her nails. Leah was the big, bad villain. There was no way she could paint or twist this that wouldn’t make it true. Her explanation was the same as Grey’s, so why did that make him a liar? Destiny spared them both from a rebuttal and rolled her eyes instead, then created a more comfortable space for herself.
Leah was mocking her, but Destiny merely smirked up at the bitch. “Yup, exactly.” She stated plainly━was Leah wrong? No. Did Destiny feel bad about it? Well, yes, but protecting Petyr was more important. And she’d been under the impression that Raik was an awful person. That was different now, and perhaps it’d affect her more once she wasn’t fighting for her life.
At any moment, Leah could step over the line and kill her. It was as easy as that━Destiny was trapped. Not just how she’d been for years, but supernaturally bound to this circle. Even using her abilities to snap the chair’s arms drained her.
‘Please. I’ve only ever killed one person. My dad.’
Destiny raised a brow, eyeing Leah thoughtfully. She seriously doubted that, but the woman’s following explanation was actually interesting and potentially helpful for Grey. If Destiny ever got out of here, and if she ever got to see him again. Fuck.
In any case, it seemed a little far-fetched. There were likely more things out there than Destiny knew about, but reapers? And who made this dumb bitch one of them? Why should someone like Leah get to choose the fate of the dead? Destiny didn’t even think she believed in Heaven and Hell. There might’ve been some sort of afterlife, and she definitely thought there was something to karma, and what you put out into the universe was what you got back, but Heaven seemed a little far-fetched.
Still, the idea of eternal damnation was unsettling. Kinda fucking scary, honestly.
Family. Leah mocked the word, and tears sprung into Destiny’s eyes. She’d told Grey she didn’t want it anymore, but she did. It was all she fucking wanted━even if it would be a poor imitation, according to Leah’s judgement. It didn’t matter; at least they’d have something. It would be ten times better than this.
“Yeah, maybe I’m not a good person,” Destiny sucked in a breath through her teeth, staring at Leah with a deep frown, “Maybe I’ve done too much shit to earn a happy afterlife, but I’m not gonna apologize for protecting my son.” She could feel him moving there, underneath her fingertips, and began to breathe slowly, hoping that calming herself would continue to keep Petyr safe.
“What’s your endgame here, Leah? Keep me locked up in this mountain ash ring for days… and for what?” Destiny shook her head, totally and completely exasperated by this already, though she stayed on high alert. If Leah came across that line, she had to protect herself. “I’m gonna need to pee soon, y’know. Kid constantly pressing on my bladder and all.” Testing the limits to Leah’s humanity was strange and a little nerve-wracking. She was a cold, callous bitch ninety percent of the time, but was clearly worked up about the whole Remzi/Raik situation, which meant there was a heart way, way deep down.

Yes, Remzi knew the strained relationship between her and Grey and he knew what he was doing when he approached Grey, but that didn’t excuse their actions. “Keep telling yourself that if it helps you sleep at night.” They fucked up, there was no way of denying it. They killed someone innocent in all this shit. Leah would defend Remzi until her very last breath in this instance and she wouldn’t stand for someone speaking badly of the vampire. Regardless of her words, Destiny wasn’t snapping. She wasn’t crumbling like she expected, tears falling from her eyes as she cried to Leah telling her she was sorry. There was nothing but bitterness which angered Leah even more. She wanted a reaction out of Destiny. A slither of regret, but there was nothing and she wasn’t going to apologise for her actions either. She promised Remzi she would sort this out though, but what was her endgame with this bitch. A smirk crept across her face as she kept her eyes focused on Destiny. A cold stare as she watched the other woman speak about this unborn kid. “Reapers can manipulate memories y’know.” Ultimately she had the upper hand in all of this. Destiny's powers were nothing compared to hers. “Well, there’s a lot of things we can do.” She disappeared, though remaining where she stood yet invisible. “Drop the act Destiny. I know you’re scared. I can sense it.” She slowly walked around the circle as she spoke, her voice travelling through the warehouse. “Did you know reapers have a killing touch as well? I could simply touch you on your shoulder and kill you.” She reappeared behind Destiny after she spoke, bending down slightly so her lips were next to Destiny’s ear. “Boo.” She whispered softly before letting out a sharp laugh. She was done trying to guilt trip Destiny. It was time to turn it up a notch. Instantly she placed her hands on the side of Destiny’s head, her fingers digging into the girl’s temple as she concentrated. Whenever she did it with Damien in LA it was easy. They found a drunk guy, infiltrated his mind and off he went none the wiser. The guy was somewhat drunk and she had Damien alongside her to help. This time it was just her and Leah. Destiny’s memories weren’t that easy to get through. Years of flashing images before her images as Leah furiously searched through until she found Grey. The first day they met. There was a sea of memories after that, all filled with happiness but Leah tried her best to fill it full of anger and hatred, painting Grey in the same image as Tanner. It was taxing and she found herself losing strength with each passing memory. Destiny was fighting her, but Leah refused to let go. She was determined to ruin every single memory Destiny had of Grey until she hit a wall. Leah eventually let go and stepped back quickly out of the mountain ash. She brought her hand up to wipe away the blood that was seeping from her nose. There was a hum from her back pocket and she pulled her phone out. It was Remzi. She tapped back with the address of the warehouse. Slowly she walked around to the front of Destiny, who wasn’t in a good way. Leah was drained, but Destiny looked even worse. Completely drained of colour and barely responsive. Fuck. She started to panic, “Oi.” She bellowed loudly as Destiny began to stir. Oh, what the fuck had she done. The bloke back in LA was fine. She pulled her phone out texting Remzi to meet her. As soon as she hit send she pulled up her contact list. Her only option was Cory. The kind sweet reaper who would undo all this shit. Her eyes flickered between Destiny and her phone as she typed out a message to Cory, sending him the address for the warehouse. DESTINY BACCARI

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ SHE WASN’T WEAK. Not anymore, and she never would be again. Destiny pressed her hand to her belly, hoping to feel Petyr move again as her heartbeat quickened. Leah began to resemble a giant cat stalking its prey, which was concerning, to say the least. He wasn’t shifting, though, and she tried not to think about it too much━not now, not while Leah was about to eat her alive.
Suddenly, the woman was gone, and with her went the terrifying expression. Destiny tried not to gasp, keeping everything under wraps, attempting not to come across as panicky. Blue eyes moved slowly with the voice, and she concentrated on raising a forcefield, casting it over the pair of them━her and Petyr. “Who wouldn’t be a little nervous while stuck in a room with a crazy bitch?” Her voice didn’t sound as strong as it had moments before, but she focused anyway. She had to protect Petyr. He was what all of this was for. Without him… none of it really mattered.
‘Boo.’
Destiny was naturally pretty jumpy. Small sounds scared her even when she expected them, but this had her nearly launching out of her seat. She gasped sharply, accidentally letting the protection go. Her brows furrowed together, desperate to concentrate and get it back up again, though Leah’s touch came before she could complete it, leaving them completely vulnerable.
It was worse than when she’d lived through it. Every strike, every harsh word, every lie twisted until they came from Grey’s mouth, not Tanner’s. She remembered the love they shared━each moment where she felt safe and powerful because of Grey━except now they were tainted. Smudged with black ink by Leah’s hand until Destiny couldn’t tell the difference between Tanner and Grey anymore. Once, they’d been completely different, polar opposites in a way that made her so happy. But now?
She tried to keep hold of the good things for as long as she could, desperate to squirrel them away for later━for Petyr. For their family. Family. They were supposed to be one, not this. Tanner took away so many chances for a family, but Grey was excited for one… until he wasn’t.
She couldn’t remember it properly━it wasn’t tangible; Destiny couldn’t recall what she was wearing that day or any conversation before, but she could see it. Grey didn’t want them anymore. He’d actively tried to take Petyr from her, just like… no, it’d always been him. Grey hurt her. Destiny could remember it now. He carved a declaration of his ownership into her skin, and he stole every bit of love she had and crushed it between his fingers.
He would’ve killed her if she hadn’t gotten free━hadn’t come here. To his sister.
Destiny screamed in agony, her head dropping forward when Leah released her. She couldn’t feel it━being gone━but she was. Stuck in a constant loop of trauma.
Eventually, like swimming to the surface after holding her breath for too long, Destiny broke through. It wasn’t Leah’s beckoning that woke her; she could barely hear that over the disorganized flurry in her mind. It was Grey… but it wasn’t. She felt the splicing of memories, how they tried to repair themselves and failed, unearthing each second of violence.
“No, no,” Destiny cried finally. Her sweatpants were soaked━she’d been wearing them since she came from Grey’s place. Grey. Even thinking about him made her flinch, hands trembling as they pressed to her thighs. Her palms were like sponges against the fabric, absorbing the liquid, and when she turned them over, they… “No.” She repeated. It was supposed to be better━but what made her think it would be? Grey hurt her just as bad. He’d wanted this. He was lying each time he said he wanted Petyr.
Maybe it was the blood loss, or maybe it was the stupid bitch scraping out the innards of her mind, but either way, Destiny was dizzy. Her vision was white around the edges, and she could almost see the walls the mountain ash created. It was a blueish hue surrounding her, keeping her locked in. She couldn’t even focus on Leah; she couldn’t see anything but blue. Her head tilted as she peered at it, eventually losing her balance and falling directly off the side of the chair━which was incredibly easy after she’d ripped the arms off.
The wooden seat tipped over as Destiny fell, landing on her hip. Though futile, one arm curled around her bump to protect him, the other hand pressing to the floor to cushion the blow. It didn’t work, not really. A sharp pain shot from one side of her pelvis to the other, and as the chair slid halfway out of the mountain ash ring, Destiny’s head bounced off the opposite side. That dull blue came to life then, brightening and pushing back at Destiny like an airbag. It was just like the time Ta━no, Grey slammed her into a wall. She remembered feeling it━the way the drywall cracked under the pressure of her skull.
“You did this to him!” Destiny screamed suddenly, head cocking up to glare at Leah. The angry expression cracked, giving way to her sobs. “He’s your nephew! He’s your fucking nephew! How could you━he never━” She pushed herself to sit up, wiping her cheeks on the backs of her hands. “You can hate me, hate Grey━but Petyr… he didn’t do anything to you. You never gave him a chance.” Destiny knew this feeling, and she knew this was it. The dread swept through like a breeze and brought her straight to grief.
There was still a tiny possibility. Her body was fragile, but it was possible, and she wanted to hang onto that. She could help him, raise him, and she’d do it on her own. Grey didn’t want him, but Destiny did. Leah was right, she was a shitty person, but she’d love Petyr and protect him forever. “No, no, I can’t━” She tried to heal herself, letting the healing energy flow through her, but there was nothing left. It touched her head and her hip, the spots of physical pain, but it couldn’t cure this. She was helpless, useless, just as she’d always been.
Digging the heels of her palms into her temples as if she could put her mind back in order, Destiny cried out again, wondering how much pressure it would take to end this.

It had been peaceful at least. Not all were. Sometimes there was so much violence that Cory thought he could almost feel it like soot on his skin when he got away from it. He’d stand – more like squat – in the tiny shower at the motel, trying to wash it from his skin when he knew that none of it would ever really leave his brain regardless. Maybe that was the benefit of only doing this after you were really dead – there was less of that human part of you left, so you could be like Leah or Damien or, worse somehow, Elias. Or maybe it was just the curse of doing this with a thin skin.
His mouth twitched faintly into a smile as he let go of the girl’s hand for her to run across the yard of the house where he’d dropped her off to fling herself into the arms of a far older man. ’Grandpa!’ There was a joy in the word that loosened something a little in his chest that got so tight when all of this went the other way and they fought the idea that the afterlife was going to be so much worse than where they’d been. She hadn’t fought, the thing in her brain had taken her in her sleep and hadn’t let her do that but she wasn’t bitter about it and it helped.
Drawing in a breath, Cory raised a hand as the teenaged girl turned and waved to him. Some were prepared to go when it was their time and this was one of those. He turned away as they disappeared into the house, disappearing in a blink from the heaven the girl would share with her grandparents.
The motel unfolded around him. The room as small as he always remembered it, the two beds, Dani’s stuff in one half of the room, his own in the other, all packed neatly like his life hadn’t spread back out like everybody else’s yet. Some part of him held back like he had one foot in what had been and one in what was now.
Cory huffed a breath out, dragging his bag up onto his bed. Time to change it. He wasn’t gonna end up an automaton like Elias, maybe he’d take a leaf out of Leah’s book like that. He had a handful of snarled t-shirts in his fist ready to dump into the rickety chest of drawers in the room when his phone buzzed in his pocket. At least it was a real call and not one of those uncomfortable tugs in his chest that meant someone else in this town had died. It didn’t mean it had to be pleasant though.
Leah.
He almost ignored the message – no explanation of anything of course, just an address like he was a servant expected to pick up her messes – but he didn’t have it in him. After the night with Leah and Hannya at the club maybe he should’ve done, Leah had tried to prove to him how much of a chicken he was then. Heat spread up from beneath his collar at the thought but he didn’t shove it back in his pocket and continue unpacking. Cory the choir boy went.
The warehouse was quiet … too quiet. It was the sort of place that would’ve given him the heebie-jeebies as a teenager (probably as Brooke had dragged him into it for a laugh), as an adult who dealt with Death as a living it still shot a shiver down his spine. Cory padded through from one room to another, his throat tight as he called out. ”Leah? Leah, I swear to God if you’ve dumped with this because you couldn’t be bothered I’m gonna …” He almost heard her retort, although it was all in his head. ’What Cory? You’re too afraid to do anything.’ It would’ve come with a mocking laugh, a dare, and he would’ve gulped, the thought drying up.
A faint blue glow shone through the next doorway, disappearing for a moment to be replaced by something brighter, warmer, dimmer. That was snuffed out too, letting the shadows swim back in as he stepped through into an open space. This one wasn’t empty. There was a ring of what looked like black ash on the floor. Big enough for the remnants of a chair, for a woman to be balled up there. She cried out and Cory flinched before he started forward.
Six feet out and he gasped too. It wasn’t ash smeared on the sweatpants she wore, not on her hands or seeming to pool on the concrete. It was dark and red and everywhere. Cory felt the tremors start in his chest as he vanished in a blink again, like he didn’t even want to take the time to walk those last few feet to her. He was outside the circle and then in it, his hands spread in the air, fingers shaking as he knelt next to her. ”No … no, no, no.” The bulge of her stomach had been obvious before but now all the pieces of the puzzle the nightmare in the circle were clicking into place. Not this. They couldn’t have been called for something like this.
Cory went to reach for her, but he hesitated, not sure where to touch, how to make this better because he wasn’t taking them both. Leah was not dumping him with this, not tearing some hole in him with this because she was trying to teach some lesson about growing a pair. He didn’t want to harden up in the way she obviously had straight out of the womb. ”I’m sorry,” he whispered hoarsely, finally settling his hands on the woman’s shoulders. ”We should … we should get you out of here. Get some help. The hospital … maybe there’s something they can do to help. It’s gonna be alright, I … I promise.” Eyes that were filling with tears before the probably lie spilled out wheeled around the room. ”Leah!” There was anger in it now, ringing off the walls until it tailed off into a weak, mewling cry that felt like it came from right there beside them.
No. Oh God, no.

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ THIS TOWN WAS A huge fucking let-down. Even before Raik’s death, Remzi had to deal with the cops, Leah being an asshole, his brother up his ass… the only good thing about this place was the fact that most of the bitches here were stupid and always chock-full of the good stuff, like little blood bags prancing around on silky smooth legs.
He almost missed getting ragged on by his brother. Raik wasn’t in his ear constantly telling Remzi he was wrong, and now that Remzi realized how wrong he was all the damn time… well, it was just a shitty fucking feeling. He was the reason Raik was dead, but, as per usual, it was easier to blame somebody else. In this case, Leah presented two somebodies on a silver fucking platter.
Grey and Destiny. Leah’s shitty half-brother and his bitch; they killed Raik… even if it was Remzi who’d put a target on his brother’s back by making him seem like a viable target.
Leah had promised she’d make this right, that she’d bring Raik back, and Remzi left it in her hands. He supposed it was better he didn’t know her plan, anyway━otherwise he might just fuck it up again.
Remzi’s fangs unlatched from the stranger’s neck as soon as he felt his phone buzz. Barely pulling back more than an inch, he tugged it from his pocket and glanced down, sighing heavily at Leah’s message. He wanted to go, and he was trying to practice better control nowadays. It was just… irritating to not finish his meal. Even after his stint with no humanity, Remzi still only possessed half a conscience. Plus, wiping their minds was easier than getting rid of a body.
“You’re gonna forget this.” Remzi hissed after taking the back of her neck in his hand, staring deep into her eyes. “You’re gonna forget you met me, that you came here, all of it. Understand?” She gave a little nod, and Remzi tugged her up by the arm as he stood. Taking her upstairs to the normal club, he gave her a quick pat on the ass and vanished.
Within moments, Remzi appeared at the door of some sketchy-looking warehouse, though it wasn’t half as bad as some of the places he’d been back home. He double-checked the address in the text before tucking his phone away and heading inside, following the sounds of screaming. Fuck. What the fuck was Leah…?
Appearing in the main room had Remzi coming to a halt in the back corner. He got his answer then.
He’d never seen her before, but he assumed this was the chick━the one Remzi had actually protected once before. Sure, it was for selfish reasons, but still. And now she and her stupid fucking boyfriend murdered his brother.
Remzi rushed up to Leah’s side in a blur, wrapping an arm around her waist because physical touch felt right for them now. They’d broken some sort of barrier before, when Raik died, and though it was extremely uncomfortable to acknowledge, he couldn’t go back on it. They couldn’t go back on any of this. Especially not…
He saw it just before the stranger━the other guy━blipped into the circle and screamed Leah’s name.
Remzi knew he should’ve felt bad. Maybe one day he would, but right now all he could think about was himself━how he’d lost a brother, how he’d suffered at her hand. She deserved to fucking suffer, too.
“Holy shit,” Was all that came out, veins appearing under his eyes as Remzi looked at the scene that was so close he could almost reach out and touch it. It was gross, but he supposed that was part of being a blood-sucking-dead-dude. “You okay?” He mumbled into Leah’s hair despite the other guy’s angry shouts, giving her a gentle squeeze on the hip. God would definitely have something to say about Remzi’s stance at the moment━so would his mother. His instinct was to help the woman in need, and, if it were anybody else, he would’ve. But fuck this bitch.
“Hey, you don’t know what kinda shit she’s done, man. This isn’t Leah’s fault.” Remzi snapped back at the dude who looked like an inflatable tube man━y’know, those fucking things that wiggle in the wind outside of car dealerships. Tall and gangly. Also reminiscent of Gumby… if Gumby was addicted to smack.
Either way, the words felt wrong as soon as they left his mouth. This was wrong, but so was murdering his brother.

Leah wasn’t sure what she felt at that moment, in fact, she was in shock. There was a trace of guilt in her. It didn’t extend to Destiny, especially after Destiny had just sat there and indicated to Leah that didn’t even regret killing Raik. In fact, she was gloating about her actions. Sitting in the chair, acting like she had done the right thing by slitting Raik’s throat. This was never Leah’s intended consequence, but as always she ploughed forward without considering what could happen. She just wanted to fuck with Destiny and Grey’s relationship. “He’s your nephew! He’s your fucking nephew! How could you━he never━” Bit of a stretch as she never considered Grey to be her brother. “You should never have gone after Raik. He didn’t do anything to you!” Another innocent party caught in the crossfire in this ridiculous long feud between Grey and Leah, along with Destiny, Remzi and the unborn baby. She needed Remzi there for support. Someone on her side, someone to tell her she hadn’t completely fucked up. As for Cory, she was the only one she could trust to sort this out. The baby, the memories. All of it. They both responded to her call, first Cory who hurried over to Destiny then Remzi. Instantly she felt better as Remzi rushed to her side, a hand on her hip giving her a reassuring squeeze. She nodded slowly in response to his question, although she wasn’t okay. She was far from okay. The anger in Cory’s voice took her back a little. She’d never heard him speak in such a tone. “She killed Remzi’s brother for no reason so I tried to manipulate her memories but it didn’t work.” She hadn’t exactly done the worst thing in the world. If Destiny could throw about the excuse of protecting her family then Leah could. She was doing all this to protect herself. Her body stiffened up at the sound of the weak cry coming from inside the circle. “You gotta reverse this… please.” She spoke to Cory. She pulled her eyes away from him and turned to Remzi. There was a strong chance Cory would run off to Death to tell him everything, turning her into a wanted woman. “We gotta get out of here.” She said quietly to Remzi before the pair vanished out of the warehouse. ━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ IT WASN’T AS PAINFUL as Destiny imagined. She began to lose faith rapidly with her mental decline━why would she get to have Petyr? She kept trying to bring children into all the wrong situations. Maybe she deserved this mental anguish so they wouldn’t have to suffer through the physical. Despite the gruesome scene around her (and in her head), there still wasn’t any pain. She couldn’t feel him go, but she knew he was gone━he was there a second ago, just a second before, rolling and shifting and sending elbows into her ribs, and now he wasn’t.
“I’m sorry!” Destiny screamed back to Leah, and she was. She never would’ve gone through with it if she’d known it would lead to this. If she’d known how psychotic Leah was, thinking that this was a comparable move━as if this was fair.
She didn’t notice the stranger until he was there, in her space, in the little circle that was her prison and somehow her safe zone all at once. Leah wasn’t inside it anymore, she’d left Destiny here alone, but now he was encroaching so fast that she flinched away. It sent Destiny back into the mountain ash barrier, bouncing off with another blue flash. She ignored the way it pushed at her body, blue eyes made even bigger as she stared. He looked friendly, but since when did that mean anything? Leah seemed sweet when they first met━so did Grey. So did Tanner. Obviously, Destiny was an awful judge of character, and she didn’t wanna make the same mistake again, especially not now.
But why did it matter? Her palms pressed to her belly, and absolutely no comfort came from it anymore. She’d already lost everything that mattered.
Tears continued to roll freely down her cheeks, her chest rising and falling in that panicked gasp of breath, just like it had with Grey━maybe it wasn’t just Leah who did this. Perhaps it’d started with Grey. Her memory of the events less than half an hour prior twisted and tangled with another━when she found out she wasn’t the only girl Tanner kept around. She remembered accusations from both sides, insults, a backhand━that was Grey. She could still feel the burn on her cheek from earlier.
She didn’t notice the man settling his hands on her until it was too late━where would she move, anyway? His touch wasn’t cold and jarring like Leah’s, though; it was gentle and somehow had a wave of peace washing over her. Destiny released a shuddered breath, eyes ticking up to his. His words were as soft as his touch, and they had her nodding slowly before she’d really understood them. “Okay,” Destiny whispered first, and then slowly started shaking her head. “No, I… I need to go home. I wanna go home.” They could get to the hospital after, but it felt like she’d been trying to get home for hours and everybody kept getting in the way. She likely couldn’t curl up in bed and sleep this away like she wanted to, but at least she could change, see Berlioz, maybe have a moment to breathe.
One hand came up, fingers curling gently around the man’s wrist, completely unaware of whether or not her palms were dry yet.
Leah said it again━put the blame on Destiny for all of this. Her brows furrowed, head turning to find Leah wrapped around someone else. That was the brother━the right one. Why did Leah get him? Why did she get to have somebody she loved at her side during this, like she was the one who needed comfort? “It wasn’t for no reason!” The words ripped from her throat with such a strain that she thought it might bleed, too. Destiny sputtered and swallowed, trying to repair the damage before she looked again to the man inside the circle. “It wasn’t for no reason,” She repeated to him, softer now, sniffling, willing the stranger to believe her with no proof except what was in her eyes. “We went after him because she’d already threatened me. I just wanted to protect my baby,” Destiny sobbed. She sounded like a broken record. She felt… just fucking broken.
In an instant, Leah was gone, and Destiny was jealous of her again. Anger boiled beneath, but there was no energy left for it to rise. “She… she did something. I don’t know…” Swallowing hard, Destiny pointed weakly to her head. It felt wrong, whatever was going on, it was just a constant loop of the trauma she’d gone through again and again and she needed it to stop. “Is it hurting him? Can you help him?” He’d promised she could get help, right? Maybe he knew━maybe he could help Petyr by reversing this. Hope filled Destiny’s eyes suddenly, looking down at the little globe where he was buried beneath. Her altered and spliced mind was reminded then, however, of the red stains filling the area in every direction. There was no cure for this.

Leah was a liar. The sort without the burden of a conscience to even make them feel bad for spewing out that shit afterwards. Once upon a time he’d trusted her, letting his own tragedies guide his admittedly too tender heart in a way that meant he’d played right into her hands. ‘My brother killed me’ – like it was a huge wrong that needed to be righted and like a good little boy he’d trotted right back to Death and had pled Leah’s case. Cory felt sick about it now, his stomach twisting up in knots tight enough to choke him. He’d heard half the story and all the gloating Leah had done about it afterwards. He wasn’t just chicken, he was an idiot.
The invisible choke chain she’d slipped around his neck right back then pulled tight again. He shouldn’t have answered her text, coming to clean up her messes when she called. He should’ve left the minute he’d realised this wasn’t normal. He should’ve left her to deal whatever she had done here, but that would’ve meant leaving a piece of who he was there, caught under a spike heeled boot as she tried to grind the saintliness out of him (she probably would’ve sworn it was for his own good too). And it would’ve left her there alone, bloodied and hurt, maybe dying.
Cory wanted to scream, could feel it rising like lava in his throat as the pregnant woman tried to scramble away from him. She came up against some invisible shield, light flaring blue from it as she brushed it. Tears were streaming down her face, panic sending her breathing into panicked gasps. It was like she was afraid of him, probably for good reason. Whatever had happened her had left so much blood that he thought he was drowning in the smell of it. Wrong, so painfully wrong with that bulging belly right in the middle of it. Babies were meant to come into the world screaming at the outrage of being ousted from that happy little nest they had in there, they were meant to settle in their parents arms, basking in the love that rolled out of them. They weren’t supposed to…
God, Leah.
The girl just a short while before had been hard, she’d been so young, but this was a thousand times worse and Cory was sure he didn’t have him in it to fix this or make it right in the least. The hospital might not be enough but there were doctors at least, weren’t there? They had medicines, there were surgeries, they saved babies all the time. She didn’t flinch from him when he touched her, but there was another shuddering breath, a nod that had something loosening inside of him. At her plea to go home, Cory shook his head, something in his chest fluttering in time with it. ”B-but they can help. I think you n-need someone, someone to help with …this.” He looked down at the blood through a screen of tears as that cry came again. Too late for one of them but maybe not her too.
Leah was going to have so much to fucking answer for. As if she knew what he was thinking she suddenly seemed to appear right there. A dark haired guy wrapped at her side, like she was some delicate flower who needed someone right now, instead of being the thorn that poisoned everything. Cory’s eyes went hard as he took the two of them in, the reaper and the vampire!. He almost flinched at the black veins that suddenly crawled beneath the guy’s eyes. ”You’re right, I don’t, but I know you Leah. What the hell is this?” His eyes cut cold as ice to fix on the guy. ”Is it the baby’s fault too? What have they done?” They said babies were born free of all sin but it seemed as though Leah had come out happily wrapped in hers to wreak hell like this.
The laugh that rolled out was strained, watery as the tears that glittered on Cory’s lashes. It didn’t matter what this woman had done, if she’d done anything at all, Leah was a born liar after all and he knew better than to believe her now. ”The way your brother did you? Can you even hear yourself right now? She did something you could’ve had her locked up for and instead of doing it the normal way you brain fuck her? What’s wrong with you?” There was almost a plea in his voice for an answer but the weak cries that were tearing at him still – and was that a flinch on Leah’s part? – like one speck of truth would somehow make all this better. The woman hollered out too, sputtering, looking up to him to explain when she didn’t have to, he knew none of it was as Leah – or that asshole with her – had explained it. ”You d-did right.” As a mom you were supposed to protect your kids.
Cory’s eyes burned as he looked back up at Leah with misery all over his face. He wasn’t a magician, he didn’t even know how half of this reaper shit worked. Augustus hadn’t shared enough with him and wasn’t there now to help when he needed him. ”Me? You think I can fix this while you run away? Leah!” The bark of her name didn’t make her stay. Like the coward she was, Leah ran and the two of them were left alone in that blue lit cell of power.
Sinking to the floor, Cory tried to gather the woman into his lap. One hand found her temple gently, like a single brush of his hand would fix all that had happened. He tried for a smile for her, the tears swimming all the harder. ”Whatever she did … I’ll try and fix it. I promise, I’ll try.” Memory manipulation, just another one of those things mentioned off-handedly like he could learn it on the job. As she asked about the baby, Cory pressed his lips together and shook his head. ”I don’t know,” he lied hoarsely. The cries had tailed off to those little whimpers, calling him a liar. The baby was beyond pain now, he thought. ”Let’s … let’s get you home and I’ll try. I’m gonna do everything I can for both of you. Hold on.” Cory wrapped his arm around her, his other trailing down to settle near the floor at the last second. To take her … and the baby … to where she desperately wanted to go, to try and fix everything Leah had destroyed. Cory let his eyes fall shut and in a single heartbeat they were gone from that cell.
