— here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one —
Alex released a small whimper as he flinched in his sleep, his hands tugging at the sheets beneath him in a tight grasp. "No..." Alex whispered in his sleep, his brows tugging into a deep frown. "Nagyanya... Távozz tőle." Grandma... Get away from her." He begged, the lights in his room flickering on and off as his magic began seeping into reality before it stopped altogether as he began shaking his head furiously. "Állj meg. Kérem." Stop. Please. No matter how hard he begged, no matter what he did, they were still hurting his grandmother right before his eyes. He'd never felt more helpless. She was looking at him with so much fear in her eyes, she was looking at him like she was waiting on him to do something, to save her but he couldn't He could barely move. No matter how hard he tried to summon his own magic, he was useless.
Alex shook his head and looked down in his dream, whispering again and again that it was just a dream, that the worst had happened already, that his grandmother wasn't even alive anymore, but he couldn't wake up. Those beings... They were starting to shout at him to open his eyes and when he finally opened them in his dream, he saw them pointing their guns at his siblings. "No, no, no..." Alex sobbed as he watched helplessly, his feet still glued to the ground beneath him. He couldn't move. When he looked down to see why he couldn't move, he saw hands gripping his ankles which tore another sob from Alex because it was his grandfather holding onto him, begging Alex to help him. "I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."
Why couldn't he wake up? He wanted to wake up. He wanted this dream to end.
Alex shouldn't have taken matters into his own hands. He shouldn't have finished those beer bottles yesterday but he was starting to feel really exhausted from spending countless nights without any sleep. Ever since he was a kid, he suffered from insomnia that seemed to stick with him to his adulthood. It wasn't as severe as most cases, but it still forbade him from going to sleep like a normal person. He'd usually find ways to exhaust himself to the point where he could finally catch some sleep but those nights weren't so peaceful. They were always filled with nightmares.
Alex whimpered again in his sleep as he tugged harder onto the sheets underneath his body, his head shaking left and right as he released another shaky breath. "Stop... Please." Alex wanted to wake up. Why couldn't he just wake up? He just needs this nightmare to end.

━ watch me make them bow ━ HARMONY COULDN’T SLEEP. Not while she felt Viktor slipping away from her with every moment; she was terrified that she’d wake up one day and he’d be gone. Maybe just into the other room with his siblings, but he’d still be drifting from her. The fear that he would’ve disappeared without saying goodbye returned. Tears pricked her eyes, and Harmony didn’t bother to hide them or clear them away before they could be noticed. Despite her worries, Viktor was fast asleep beside her, his heartbeat thumping steadily under her palm.
She tilted her head up from where it rested on the spot where his chest merged with his shoulder, studying the shape of his profile in the dark. The gentle dip where his eyebrows cushioned his nose, the seemingly perfect slope downwards. His forehead was relaxed, not wrinkled like it sometimes (always) was at her, brows furrowed and angry. She hated how pretty and perfect his lips were, a little too nice to be wasted on a man, Harmony thought━or maybe she was merely worried that someone else might find them kissable, too. Someone prettier, nicer━someone who didn’t cause him so much stress and didn’t actively try (successfully) to upset his family. She loved his loyalty to his family more than anything━so why did she keep trying to poke holes in the only way to his heart?
Pretending not to care clearly wasn’t working anymore, not after her birthday. Oh, God, her birthday. She couldn’t begin to explain how that made her feel.
Her plan, now, was to make it too difficult for him to stay. Though it was probably her biggest fear, if Viktor chose to leave, everything would be easier. If he left, she wouldn’t have to keep going through this. She could move on.
Shifting closer, Harmony pressed the same slope of her nose and her forehead into his cheek, nuzzling despite the rough patches scraping her skin. She breathed him in like it was the last time and buried her face into his neck, enclosing around his warmth despite how she overheated.
She thought she might’ve been drifting when she heard the noises seeping through thin drywall like a burst pipe. Harmony tried to ignore it at first, assuming it would stop, but it didn’t. For all the negative aspects of being a siren, she didn’t have many advantages━no super-hearing like Viktor━and instead strained to make out the muffled words. It was Alex. She could tell by the side of the room the sound permeated from, though it took a little longer to figure out what he was saying.
He was apologizing. Begging, likely stuck in a nightmare, and though Harmony was probably the least maternal woman in this group full of vagabond wolves, she had a soft spot for the kid. He wasn’t a wolf━wasn’t like the rest of his family━and, yeah, sure, it helped that he looked at Harmony as if she was an Angel.
She attempted to talk herself out of it before carefully slipping from the bed, eyes on Viktor to make sure he wouldn’t wake. This went against what she’d just been planning, but Harmony couldn’t help it; the poor thing sounded absolutely petrified. Some part of her definitely didn’t want Viktor to go. Hell, she was only just tearing up at the thought of it. Ugh. It was getting worse every Goddamn day.
Wiggling into a pair of soft, loose pyjama shorts and a cropped tank top, Harmony took one more glance at Viktor before quietly scurrying out the door. He wouldn’t have been happy if she went over there stark naked, but it might’ve cheered the kid up.
It was only a few steps to Alex’s━siblings flanked them on all sides━and then she was inside with the threshold quietly closing behind her again. She could see the lights flickering through the tiny window that faced the outside, but now, on the inside, she could see he still wasn’t awake.
Harmony approached cautiously, trying to send her words to him without speaking, attempting to draw him from the dream. There was that whole thing about not waking people who sleep-walked, and while this wasn’t technically the same, waking someone who was sleep-magicking seemed far more dangerous.
“Alex, you’re having a bad dream, honey. Wake up, and it’ll go away,” She wasn’t sure if they would find their way to him, and perhaps she was prepping herself before coming closer. Again, Harmony wasn’t very maternal or good at the whole “consoling” thing. She acted purely on gut feeling.
Carefully climbing into his bed, Harmony stilled over him for a moment, on her knees with a hand on his chest. He was shaking and jerking violently. She shushed him softly before diving right in, laying next to Alex and gathering him up in her arms. Like a comforting straightjacket, Harmony held him tight, hoping it would stop the movements━and the magic before someone outside wondered what the hell was going on. “Shh, shh,” She hushed, barely raising her voice to try to catch his attention. “It’s just a dream, it’s just a dream. I’m here. You’re okay, you’re not alone,”
She’d tell herself she did it for Viktor, but even that meant more than she wanted to admit.

— here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one —
Alex had never felt like he was trapped in his own mind as he did in that exact moment as he struggled helplessly to wake up from that nightmare that seemed to stretch ahead of him infinitely. He was beginning to believe that he was never going to wake up from it. That was until he heard a voice calling out to him. A voice that momentarily made him move his hands away from his ears when he tried to cover them to block out the sound of his grandmother’s helpless screams of agony. It was strange how her voice suddenly seemed to make all the horrible sounds around him disappear. He was no longer listening to his grandmother beg him to help her and his grandfather seemed to have received his ankles from his strong grip. Alex looked around him with the same terrified expression as everything seemed to turn blurry as if he was looking at the world without glasses. “H–Harmony?” Alex called out, but he couldn’t see her anywhere. It was suddenly so quiet that he could almost hear the sound of his own rapidly beating heart. “Please… Help me…” Alex pleaded in that same broken voice of his as he looked around him again to see if he could spot her anywhere. But he was all alone here, standing in the destruction of his own family.
“Ébredj, ébredj, ébredj fel…” wake up, wake up, wake up. Alex repeated under his breath with a shaky voice, tears still streaming down his cheeks like rainfall down a window. Seamless and unstoppable. Alex paused that mantra when he heard that same voice again, calling out to him, assuring him… He knew that voice. It seemed to be coming from all around him, but then she spoke again and it was a little easier to pinpoint where the voice was coming from this time around. With a gulp, he slowly started following that voice, his feet no longer glued to the ground beneath him. Alex stopped and glanced over his shoulder at his grandmother to find her already looking at him with that same helpless expression on her face as if she was pleading with him to stay here. Alex walked the opposite way because staying here wasn’t an option.
Alex followed Harmony’s voice until all his surroundings started to fade away and that fear was soon replaced by a kind of warmth that he had never felt before. It was strange, but also not in a bad way. It was that very same warmth that woke him up from his sleep and had finally stopped manipulating the lights in his room from that surge of power that seemed to leave him in waves due to his weakened grasp on the control he had over his magic. Alex let out a shaky breath as he slowly seemed to recognize his surroundings and also seemed to realize that he was actually in the warm embrace of none other than Harmony. “It was actually you…” Alex rasped, his voice deep with sleep. He thought it was just his own subconscious playing games with him. “I—” Alex found himself facing some struggle piecing his sentence together, his thoughts were still all over the place but he slowly seemed to realize that his head was resting against Harmony’s chest which made his face heat up in an instant as he slowly leaned his head away from her to look at her. “T–Thank you.” He whispered in a soft voice as he wiped his eyes from any traces of tears. "I didn't, uhm..." Alex paused to piece the sentence together in his head first. "Hurt you, right?"

━ watch me make them bow ━ WHAT WAS SHE DOING HERE? Did Harmony really think she could help Alex? Or anybody for that matter? She was just as useless at that as she was about staying anywhere for a long time or allowing her loyalty to lie with just one person. Viktor was pushing all of her limits, all of her preconceived notions about herself, so it made sense that his family would merely be an extension of that. It didn’t mean it didn’t scare her or make Harmony feel like she was an imposter here.
She could hear him beg for help, and though Harmony wasn’t sure whether it was in his mind or out loud, she was glad it meant that he could hear her. She was already a little better at this than she thought, now all she had to do was somehow coax him out of this nightmare.
“I’m here, milyy, I’m here. You’ll be alright,” She whispered, settling her hand on his chest until she threw caution to the wind and held him in her arms. He couldn’t thrash around this way, and perhaps if his movement was restricted, he’d wake up.
Finally, the lights stopped flickering, and she could feel Alex begin to settle. Harmony loosened her grip on him cautiously, though she didn’t let him go far. “Yeah,” Harmony breathed, letting out a long, slow breath, relieved he was okay━or at least waking up, which was a good starting point. God, she was way too attached to these fucking wolves.
Smiling down at him, Harmony shook her head at his gratitude, giving Alex a soft squeeze in response. “You don’t have to… thank me,” She mumbled. It felt weird coming from her mouth, especially as someone who lived for praise of every kind. Harmony liked being recognized for the things she did, but this felt… different. Like she didn’t mind. Like she’d do it again, as many times as he needed.
Slipping one hand up from his back, Harmony cupped his cheek and used her thumb to clear the tears away, shifting a few inches down so they could lay face to face. “No, you didn’t. I’m alright.” She mumbled, wrapping her arm back around him once Alex’s cheek was dry enough.
“I can stay for as long as you want,” Harmony tried to be the best shoulder (or chest) possible for Alex, though she was sure he might rather one of his siblings. They all seemed incredibly close-knit, which wasn’t something she was familiar with. She turned it on, her siren abilities, but attempted to focus it in a certain way. Instead of attraction, she wanted Alex to feel safe, warm and comforted. “Or I can go if you want that, too.” She added, unsure why she hoped he didn’t want that. Everything about this was new and strange.
“What were you dreaming about?” Harmony asked and, before she could stop them, the next words tumbled from her lips. “... If you wanna tell me.” Normally, she just demanded the information. She’d done it to Viktor a dozen times, but Alex was too fragile, and she hated imagining herself as the one to break him.

— here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one —
Alex had only felt this warmth once — and it was the kind that his grandmother gave. The way she would hold him and comb her fingers through his curls, untangling them as she went along, telling him stories that would help him uneasy mind relax and finally succumb to the pull of sleep. He thought he was never going to experience that same warmth again but he was proven wrong and when his eyes fluttered open, they relaxed on the person who was emitting that special kind of warmth and found it to be none other than Harmony. The sight of her placed a tired smile on his lips. “But I do. It’s usually not that, erm, easy to wake me up.” Alex revealed, his eyelashes still hanging heavily but he worried that if he went right back to sleep, he’d fall back into that god-awful nightmare again and it would consume him whole this time, leaving nothing behind.
Alex’s eyes fluttered shut momentarily when Harmony’s hand cupped his cheek, the feeling of her thumb wiping away his tears was enough to make his smile grow a lot warmer. “That’s good. I never want to hurt you.” Not only because she meant a lot to his brother, but because she was starting to mean a lot to him too. He wondered if that was Harmony’s true charm, being able to worm her way into your heart and sit there cross-legged. His eyes seemed to finally open when Harmony moved her hand away from his cheek, his eyes relaxing on her once again, watching her in the darkness of his room, having to squint just a tad bit to be able to make out her features in the dark.
“Thank you.” Alex said in a soft voice when she told him that she can stay for as long as he wanted. “No!” Alex responded all too quickly and a bit too loudly before he quickly apologized. “Sorry. Please stay.” Alex soon spoke up, his tone was quieter this time around. “You remind me of home.” Alex added a moment later. “I never thought I would feel that again.” Not a day goes by that he doesn’t miss his family and most nights, that type of loneliness was all too consuming for him. It would leave him gasping for air.
“Uhm…” He began, gnawing on his bottom lip momentarily. “Yes, I want to tell you. Talking about it is not easy, though.” Alex explained in a soft voice as he leaned back a little bit to be able to look at Harmony better, his head resting on the pillow again. “I was dreaming about my family. The people who attacked us… They were hurting them. Only this time, they looked like actual monsters. I know it was them because they were holding the same guns they used to gun them down like animals.” Alex sniffed, his eyes stinging again as they filled with tears. “I could not help him, like I could not help them that day, too.” Alex lifted his hand to his eyes to wipe his tears away. “I was useless. I — still am.” That was the part he hated the most. His siblings had their werewolf abilities while he had magic but it wasn’t the same. “Has Viktor told you about what happened to our family?” Alex questioned, unable to hide his curiosity.

━ watch me make them bow ━ YOU REMIND ME OF HOME. HARMONY WOULD’VE LAUGHED if the moment hadn’t been so serious. She was sure Viktor would say the opposite, that Harmony was everything bad about the modern world, but she was happy her abilities were good for something other than sexual attraction. It was still manipulation of some kind, but at least it was making Alex feel better.
She smiled instead of going on with some self-righteous response, letting him relax there in front of her. Harmony slipped her fingers through his curls again, brushing lightly, whispering, “Take your time.” She would’ve offered to hear it in Hungarian, but it would’ve been too difficult for her to mentally translate and piece together with the crumbs she’d learned from Viktor. In the beginning, they mostly spoke to one another in Russian.
Before she could say it, though, Alex went on, and she just listened instead. For once, Harmony had to shut up and be there for someone else and, surprisingly, it came naturally. She wondered if perhaps she did have some maternal instincts.
“I’m so sorry, sweetheart,” She whispered, feeling his pain heavy on her heart. Her love for Viktor extended to his family, it seemed, though she wouldn’t admit to any of it. It didn’t matter, though, because they were constantly finding ways to prove it to one another. “But you’re not useless. You’ve never been useless. I promise.” Harmony swallowed thickly, trying to beat down the urge to run from a conversation so open and full of feelings. “Just because your abilities are different doesn’t mean you can’t protect them now. We don’t grow claws or sharp teeth, but we can still be there for the people we love.” Harmony didn’t have anybody like that until now, and she didn’t know how far she was willing to go to protect them until the topic was pressed.
But she knew what it was like to live without offensive abilities. The most she could do was force someone to carry out her bidding or eat them; even Alex was more helpful than that.
“He told me most of it, I think,” She admitted. Like suggestions━she put a lot of it together herself. “I don’t think he likes talking about it, either. I know that your pack was attacked, how he became your Alpha, and how he got here.” Harmony slid her hand from his hair, using the backs of her fingers to wipe Alex’s tears after he’d done the same, trying to care for him the best she could. “Do you want to tell me the story from your point of view?” She asked in a whisper, wondering if Alex just needed to be heard by someone. He seemed like the child that got weighed down by the rest, keeping his head down and never causing trouble; the soft one who always felt more than the others━or just wore it more.

— here lies a toppled god, his fall was not a small one —
The apology that left Harmony's lips felt so genuine that it made him feel lighter. His lips stretched into a thin smile as he gently shook his head, causing a strand of hair to interrupt his vision momentarily before he brushed it back with the back of his hand. "Don't apologize. It's okay," he assured her in a soft voice. In a way, it felt like Harmony could feel his pain, could understand what he was feeling and that helped him find comfort in her presence some more. She would take good care of Viktor and he would do the same, too. Alex knew that much because Viktor had always taken care of them. When Harmony comforted him and told him that he wasn't useless, he could feel tears beginning to gather in his eyes all over again. Oh how he had longed to hear something like that for so long... Alex wiped his tears away with the back of his hand, though when he sniffed, it became clear that Harmony's assurance had pushed him to tears. She sounded so sure when she said that and that only made the tears reappear. His lack of werewolf abilities had always been Alex's biggest insecurity but thanks to Harmony, it was beginning to bloom into something else that he couldn't understand just yet, but it was definitely something beautiful, something that was created solely by Harmony's assuring words and touch.
Just where had she been all his life? His brother truly was lucky to have her and so was Alex because now that she's a part of his life, a part of their pack, he was unwilling to let go of her because she already meant quite a lot to him. "Thank you," Alex responded softly, his eyes relaxing on Harmony once again as he leaned back a little bit. He had to squint his eyes a little bit to be able to see her in the dark, but if he looked hard enough, he could see her. Perhaps that's what Harmony is, that comforting presence in the dark that assured you that no matter how dark your nights got, she'll always be there. Alex could always feel his fear of the dark beginning to ebb away and it was all thanks to her. "My grandmother always told me that I can be powerful too. Like them. Maybe no claws or fangs, but I can protect them if I practice hard enough. I can protect you."
Alex nodded his head slowly. It didn't come as a surprise to him that his brother didn't like talking about what had happened to their family, their pack. "Viktor, he may not be good at talking about what pains him, but he is good. He'll be good for you. He's good to us, too." Viktor always had the best intentions in mind when it came to their pack, like a true Alpha. Alex was honored to call him his Alpha. "It's not e—easy talking about it, but you are one of us now. I feel you should know." Alex nodded his head solemnly as he parted his lips to take a deep breath. It was such a deep breath that it felt like he was about to go into a deep dive and in a way, he was. He was about to dive into his memories to extract the details of the most painful night that he's ever experienced. The same hand he used to extract those memories wished that he could toss it out of his mind entirely, but it was doomed to stay there until he inevitably aged and passed.
"We were attacked by hunters. The day of the attack wasn't the first time I had seen them. I saw them passing by on their boats. At times, they would dock at the bay, but they always said they were passing by and we believed them. Until they came back in, em..." He made a big gesture with his hands. "Big vehicles with big wheels... They had weapons. Deadly machines... They were here for us. Not villagers, but us." Alex's eyes slowly shifted to the lights hanging overhead when they began to flicker in a beat that resembled the bang, bang, bang he heard that night. Rapid shots, rapidly falling bodies, blood everywhere. On the green land below until he could barely make out the green color anymore. "Then there were these things that they threw... Looked like big rocks, but they made a big noise and it took out a lot of us." It was the first time that Alex had been truly exposed to the real damage of those weapons created by mankind. Weapons created to kill one another... How terrifying. "We hurt them too, we hurt each other but the noises weren't stopping, the screams were only getting louder and louder. I thought we were going to die, I was prepared to fight them til death, but Nagyanya — grandmother — made us run to the plane. She promised she'd come too, but she was gone, too." Alex bit down on his bottom lip as a long pause stretched between them and it almost looked like he wasn't going to keep going. "Viktor had to take over from Nagyapa, he was sick. Very sick. Black blood. Never seen anything like it before. He was not going to make it. I believe we all knew it. Nagyapa included." To this day, the pitch black color still haunted him in his dreams. Just what had those hunters used to kill them?
"We had very little fuel in the air. If we kept going any longer, we would crash and not survive. Viktor made a landing in a base, it was safe and there, we stayed until Viktor left to look for a better home for us. We did not stay much longer on the island because of no food. Resources were very low. We went to a port, near Canada. It was nice there. The water was — magical. So were the people. Nice and welcoming. Felt like it had potential to become home. But we had to leave to look for Viktor. A pack with no Alpha has low, em... potion — potential — to survive. I was able to locate Viktor. He was in Virginia." Alex struggled momentarily to pronounce the word but seemed proud of himself when he got it right. "This is how we came here." The lights had long stopped flickering as he finally moved on from the painful subject of the brutal murder of his loved ones.
"I'm sorry, talked a lot. I'm curious about you, too. I feel I don't know much about you. Do you feel comfortable talking about yourself, too? I'll listen."

━ watch me make them bow ━ I CAN PROTECT YOU, HE SAID. HE WANTED TO PROTECT Harmony for some Godawful reason. She held her breath, throat tensing, and suffocated the instinctual reaction that emerged. To shield herself, push him away, deny, deny, deny. Harmony froze instead, her fingers in his hair, forced to endure the warmth that came with his words.
Love. It was love, and it was scary and unfamiliar.
She nodded, though it was more like her head stuttering, hesitant and unsure at first. She was trying to agree with his grandma━he could be just as powerful as them. Harmony didn’t know for sure, but she knew it would make Alex feel better, and so she encouraged him.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to relax before he hit her with another bomb: He’ll be good for you.
Harmony knew that already. Viktor was calm, traditional, and steady━all traits that rivalled Harmony’s opposing ones. She didn’t want to admit it, though━Viktor being good for her. That thought was scary in and of itself. She didn’t want to rely on him in any way; she wanted the freedom to cut ties and run at any moment, but it was already clear she’d lost that ability. The beginning of this night proved it. Coming to her brother’s room to comfort him proved it.
You are one of us now. There it was again. The words that simultaneously froze Harmony to her core and warmed her heart to the fullest degree. She loved them, though the feeling was unfamiliar━she’d never felt this familial love before, and ‘new’ meant terrifying.
Finally, Alex began their story from his perspective. Harmony held him as he told it, finding it far easier to sink into this. The focus was on him now, and though she’d always preferred everyone’s eyes to be on her, she liked this much more. Captured by Alex’s storytelling, the emotions that dripped from each word, Harmony felt the pain in her gut as though she were hearing it for the first time. She imagined craters blown out of the earth, werewolves being tossed through the air as a result of the violence, and ending up mangled and bloody━whether or not they were immediately dead. “Grenades,” She offered, though it didn’t matter, not really.
Her hands cupped his cheeks, trying to calm him as the lights flickered, swallowing what felt like needles in her throat.
The mention of his grandmother gave Alex pause, and Harmony’s hands rubbed lightly at his arms as though she were warming him. She didn't know if he’d continue, and whispered a light, “It’s okay,” even if it wasn’t. She meant that it was okay if he wanted to stop there, if it was too hard for him, and she recognized the differences between his story and Viktor’s.
Harmony knew what happened next. Their grandfather. He was the main player in Viktor’s retelling, the one mentioned more, while Alex seemed to focus on his grandma. She thought it was sweet; the way they were raised, close to one or the other. Harmony figured she would’ve had that, too, if her mother wasn’t so fucking poisonous. She lost everything to that woman, and it wasn’t fair that Harmony’s childhood was hindered by her. She wondered how her life would’ve been different if she’d grown up with them━she saw it even between siblings now.
Viktor was strong; he took his role as Alpha without complaint, and did what he had to do to protect them. But he was also controlling and terribly fucking stubborn. Alex was gentle and soft, which had its positives and negatives, like anything else. He was led by his feelings, and promised to protect people who didn’t deserve it━like her.
Finally, he continued. The part came about their grandpa, leaving on the plane, and the rest was new to her. She felt guilty, too, and not because of what Aliz had said━or, rather, accused. She felt guilty because of Alex. He was left without a brother, an Alpha, while she was playing mind games, tricking him into coming to America and trying to keep him under her thumb. Viktor was fun for her… until he wasn’t.
Until she realized there was more, and she cared about all of that. The extras. Like the one in her arms now. The one she’d only just met but wanted nothing more than to care for and protect.
“I’m sorry for that.” She whispered, blue eyes skittering down, full of guilt. She wouldn’t admit it to his sister, but Alex deserved an apology. “For keeping him here, away from you guys. I promise he never stopped looking for a home for all of you; he didn’t care about anything except that damn plane, and I tried to keep him from it. I guess I… before I ever met you, you weren’t real to me, y’know? I never had faces for the names.” But that wasn’t an excuse, and she knew as much. Still, she hoped he wouldn’t hold it against her━Alex was the only Kovacs she got along with… including Viktor.
“How did you find him?” Harmony asked softly, “Did you use magic?” She didn’t know how any of that worked━she barely knew the extent of her own abilities. Harmony likely had more knowledge about werewolves than she did sirens.
Talk about herself? Harmony cringed at the thought. “Don’t… don’t apologize; it’s okay. You didn’t talk too much.” She meant that honestly. Harmony didn’t mind listening to Alex, though she usually adored taking most of the attention. Again, everything seemed to be flipped in a conversation with Alex, and she didn’t know how to feel about that.
“Uh… I dunno what to say,” She laughed sheepishly. She hadn’t even told Viktor where she came from. “I grew up kinda opposite to you guys. I mean, my… Nagyanya and Nagyapa,” Her pronunciation was a little off, but she’d heard the words enough to repeat them from memory, grinning cheekily at Alex. Unfortunately, that didn’t save her from speaking. Her grin died as quickly as it’d emerged. “... They stopped coming around when I was little. It was just me and my mom, and she wasn’t… like, friendly.” She didn’t know how else to explain it, and sighed. “Like, it sounds like you were really close to your grandma, that she was sweet and helped you a lot. My mom wasn’t like that; she didn’t want me around, and I didn’t wanna be around her. I was sixteen when I left.” Harmony swallowed thickly, “Well, she kicked me out. I started showing signs that I was like her, and she didn’t want competition, I think. So I’ve been on my own ever since. When I met Viktor, I thought I could use him for a ride and be done with it, but… I’m still here.” She shrugged, smiling sadly. The story came with as little detail as she could manage, but she hoped Alex would appreciate it anyway. God, who was she kidding? He was sweet as fuck, of course he would.
“Viktor doesn’t… really know any of that, though, so can we keep it a secret for now?” It was hard to explain why she wanted it to come from her━if at all━but hopefully Alex could respect that. He was easier to talk to, and he wasn’t… well, she didn’t have the same relationship with him as she did with Viktor, so it was different. She didn’t have to keep her cards so close to her chest, like a shield to keep him at a distance.
As if trusting his family was any better.
