They hadn’t locked her out of the whole campus at least. There’d been no sledgehammer of power slamming into her when she’d driven onto campus the week before to meet Mikey. That crackle, slipping over her skin like static hadn’t hit until she’d been in the admin building. A subtle warning to any Meraviglia to stay clear.
Mab leaned against her car in the same lot she’d called Mikey to, the cardboard boxes he’d helped her gather up lined up in the back seat. Whitmore wouldn’t want to be too obvious, not when witches were ten-a-penny in Mystic Falls. Put up the magical version of the Great Wall of China around the centre of campus and people were going to notice.
A bitter smile had Mab’s cheeks dimpling. She tangled her fingers in the warm cuffs of her denim jacket and tugged them down to cover her knuckles. Use the blood of a single family and what you had was an invisible line she alone couldn’t cross. She could have contacted her great-grandmother and left her to handle this. If she old woman had been able to tear herself free of her self-imposed madhouse she’d have stood at that wall, wailing and beating her fists against what separated her from all that mattered. She hadn’t made the call yet though.
Chicken.
Maybe she was too yellow bellied to want to see the evil old witch again. Maybe it was wisdom. There was no way she would get her reward if her great-grandmother was the one to break St. John free from his cell.
Feeling the bite of the night air slither under her sleeves, Mab stomped her feet. The days were getting longer, warmer. If they were going to do this, it had to be soon, before summer hit and students stayed out late enough that there would always be someone around to see what they were up to. For now the lot around her was empty, everybody tucked up safe and warm in their dorm rooms, blind to what she would Cassie and Tobi do tonight.
Unfortunately the girl might prove to be her sticking point. Out by the Burial Grounds Cassie had demanded details instead of riddles before she would come on board. The curse of randomly finding another naïve magic user. She’d been forced to act on the fly, and that, Mab pondered, might end up the downfall of this entire plan. Tobi had been hooked with the thought that the brother who had murdered him and his siblings would be imprisoned for good. Other than looking for a little chit-chat with the ancestors she hadn’t been able to tell if Cassie needed anything. Need meant desperation and desperation gave you a crack to jam your nails into.
Mab refused to look down at hers as she scraped a boot heel across the ground. Short and unpainted, they looked fine but if they’d reflected what she was desperately clinging to they would be bloodied, torn right down to the quick. Her great-grandmother had known exactly how to play her, just how desperate she would be to get Joe back and finally be free of the chains she’d been clamped in even before she was born.
Cold green eyes that didn’t warm often without being forced these days rose as light finally split the shadows around the lot. She doubted her little acolytes had arrived together – uniting in their distrust of her – so it was one or the other.
Mab waited until they got close and she was bathed in that splash of light to smile big enough to flash teeth. ”Right on time. The punctuality’s appreciated.” The opposite would have been met sharply, her great-grandmother’s lessons passed on. She turned, dragging open the door to dig into one of the boxes. Plucking a pair of coveralls from the box, she held them out. ”You ready to play a little dress up? You’ll need to change before we go in, both of you.” A warlock worried about keeping his murderous brother at bay, a judgy eyed teenaged witch looking to commune with the ancestors, and a woman desperate to break free of her own cell. What could possibly go wrong?

He must have paced around his bedroom a thousand times over the past few weeks, asking himself whether it was a good question to meet Mab and this other witch. Why did she need two of them? If she was so powerful and mighty, as she acted, why not just her? So many unanswered questions that Mab had swerved. Tobi wasn’t stupid enough to trust her though. She was kept at arm's length and any sign of trouble he’d be gone. Tobi was close to telling one of his siblings what he was up to, but no doubt they’d snitch. Back in the day, they would have kept each other secrets but now they were so terrified of losing each other again that their parents were involved in every single little part of their life. He couldn’t exactly act like a spoiled brat about it either given he was expected to be eternally grateful to his parents for bringing him back. Once he sat down and thought about it though he realised he would too tell his parents if one of his siblings had sealed some weird-ass deal with a witch in Coffee Bean. Kai could have been behind the whole thing, using Mab to lure him out to the darkness to kill him. His stomach dropped at the mere thought of that as he lit up a rollie for the fourth time that day. Tobi hung out of his bedroom window, like a rebellious teenager, puffing away as he weighed up the pros and cons along with any backup plans he could put together. He did what he always did and fell back on his magic, searching through the family’s spellbook for anything that could help to ensure he came out the other side alive. There was no fucking way he was going back to the other side anytime soon. Linking spell was about as far as he got in his searches, but he lacked most of the ingredients, namely the blood of whoever he would link himself to. Ideally, he’d link himself to Mab, but he knew she was too smart to fall victim to such a spell. So, it would just be him and his rusty bicycle turning up that evening. No backup, no fancy spells, nothing. Tobi had always considered himself to be a fearless person, but that shattered whenever it came to Kai. There was nothing stopping his brother from killing him a second time. It was a humbling feeling. For the first time in forever, Tobi was actually on time. Rolling into the car park at the exact time agreed. It was a Christmas miracle, but the truth was he wanted this shit over and done with so Mab could keep her end of the deal. If all this went to plan he would be the hero of the family for saving them. If it didn’t then his family would be grieving his death. Again. With one hand on the handlebar and his other hand using his phone as a flashlight, he pulled into the car park. He could make out the figure of Mab as he drew closer and he could hear someone behind him. Tobi glanced over his shoulder, slowing down as he did so. It must have been the other witch. Younger than he was expecting. He scooted in next to the vehicle, letting his bike fall to the floor. “Couldn’t be late to the great Alcatraz breakout.” He looked past Mab, eyes falling on the building behind. Didn’t look like a place that was keeping some vampire hostage. He looked back at Mab as she spoke again, handing them both a coverall each. “Cute.” He said as he took one from her. Tobi sized it up against his body before slipping his jeans off without hesitation but kept his top on. He stepped into them, shuffling them up his body ungracefully. The clothing hung off his frame. “Not so cute.” He glanced down at his body before looking over at the young blonde witch. “Tobi” He placed his right palm on his chest, with a warm smile on his face. “What has she coerced you with?” CASSIE LUANNA & MAB CARMELLO

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ OKAY, SO SHE DIDN’T tell the other girls. They were sorta swayed already (especially Monique), and Cassie had already made up her mind, so she unconsciously(ish) left out anybody who might tell her ‘no.’ Nicky said to be careful and to not trust Mab, which she was already gonna do anyway━but a little spell for the price of a grimoire? And maybe more than one? That was totally worth it.
Plus, all the shit happening with the other vampires in her life gave Cassie another reason to help with this one’s comeuppance. Not that she was vampire-phobic now, she actually felt really bad about being so mean to Linc, and she’d make it up to him whenever he decided to come back. If he did. She felt even worse for (momentarily) hoping he’d disappear as soon as he was allowed in the sun again.
And then Niklaus and shit… which, like, don’t even get her started on that whole thing. Plus Davina.
Then God, there was Nicky’s missing sister. She felt totally terrible about that. Everything was up in the air, and she couldn't help but wonder if it could’ve easily been her. It sounded so conceited that she’d never say it out loud, though. It was just scary.
Maybe she should’ve been putting her energy into helping find Mandy instead of some nameless vamp that was another witch’s problem. But she knew Nicky would ask for her help if he wanted it. Maybe this was a family thing and, despite feeling more at home with Nicky than she ever did in her coven, this only proved that they weren’t family. Not when it really mattered.
She took the bus to Whitmore and walked towards the building she’d been directed to, her head snapping up when a guy passed on a bike. He looked back at her, and Cassie, with her curls bouncing, popped her chin and gave him a bright smile, masking all the awfulness she felt underneath. He was the one to check her out first, right?! There was nothing wrong with trying to make the best out of a bad situation.
Except for the fact that she watched the bike-riding dude slow to a stop near a woman by her car, and then recognized the woman as Mab. Okay, so maybe he wasn’t checking her out, and was just the warlock that Mab had already mentioned.
She walked up after the guy got there, flashing Mab a friendly smile before quickly realizing that she didn’t really deserve it. Especially when she handed them those ugly coveralls. Mystery Warlock dropped his pants immediately, and Cassie glanced over at his bare legs before quickly looking away, her cheeks drowning in a pink blush. Dropping her backpack full of just-in-case items, she took the outfit from Mab and followed the warlock’s lead, shimmying out of her jeans before stepping into the coveralls.
‘Not so cute.’
Cassie shrugged once the coveralls were zipped up, doing a little two-step bouncey-dance and turning to him. “Really? I think they’re adorbs. Maybe they could be a brighter colour━oooh and have a belt to cinch the waist━but otherwise they’re totally vintage.” Placing both hands on the smallest part of her torso, Cassie pushed the material in just as a belt would, and then popped a hip to pose. “See?” She giggled, then did a little wave.
“I’m Cassie!” Who already felt better now that she knew the warlock wasn’t old (like Mab) and rude (like Mab). Apparently, Cassie wasn’t just a special case when it came to Mab’s behaviour. It was just her personality━which totally sucked. Like, didn’t she know you can’t make any friends like that? Cassie did. She knew it all too well, but she figured Mab wouldn’t appreciate that kind of advice. “Nothing really,” Cassie shrugged, blue eyes ticking over to Mab. “Just as many grimoires as I can carry, or something like that. You?” Dropping her hands from her hips, Cassie bent to pick up her jeans and stuff them in the backpack. The bag dangled from her hand when she stood again, looking directly at Mab.
“Alright, I guess you wanna get this show on the road. Wait… do coveralls mean we’re breaking in?” She spoke the words in a stage whisper, though the story on her face was more excited than worrisome.

They’d both had the balls to turn up, she’d give them kudos for that.
Tobi appeared out of the darkness, the screen of his phone lit-up in lieu of a real set of lights on his bicycle. He practically reeked of doubt but that just showed he had some smarts to go along with the balls. She’d practically grabbed him by them when she’d fixed on his brother as leverage. There was a chance Tobi would run straight back to his family to say the mean witch lady had hinted that the big bad in the family had broken out of the magical cell they’d put him into but Mab was glad to see Tobi hadn’t. Those smarts again. He let his bike drop to the ground. Hell, he’d be lucky if it was still there when he got back. Whitmore wasn’t exactly known for being lawful, kids were wild … and that rule breaking streak was what she was laying money on here.
Mab’s eyes ticked up to the smaller figure walking in, coming from the direction Tobi had, then flicked back to him. Cassie was smart enough not to go poking too deep around this either, she hoped. One sign of trouble caused by either of them and it wouldn’t be the campus security guards slapping them on the wrist. ”Worried about detention if you were? Or losing out on your prize?” Or he was just a good kid. She should have winced at that thought but concern for others wasn’t something her great-grandmother had ever drummed into her. This was all about getting what she needed, everyone else slid down the list from there, including St. John.
The coveralls were already hidden beneath her jacket and hoodie, a layer of disguise for her even though she had no intention of trying to get too far into the Augustine facility here on campus. Magical alarms would sound and every asshole in the place would come flooding their way. Mab snorted as Tobi and then Cassie reached for the coveralls. ”I wasn’t exactly looking to be on the cutting edge of fashion here. Any brighter and you’re gonna stand out in there … which is kind of against the point.” At least Tobi just flashed a little leg before he ended up swamped in the clothes. ”Coerced? I can hear you, you know Tobi. Coercion sounds ugly. This is a job, quick and simple.” If they did what they were told.
Cassie’s reaction had been far brighter, earning a small sound in Mab’s throat. She looked at them both with a narrowed eyed gaze, stepping aside to let both of them toss their possessions into the back of the car, better tucked away than left on the floor in the parking lot, looking like a couple of students had taken the risk of running off into the shadows half dressed for a fumble or two before security rousted them. ”Cassie, Tobi, Tobi, Cassie.” Her teeth bared, her jacket tossed in on top of the box. The cold nipped in despite the layers she wore. ”A grimoire, one each for both of you and that’s after the two of you get St. John out of his cell."
Dark brows hitched in feigned innocence as Mab met Cassie’s eye. The girl had doubted her that first time, now there was more excitement than fear here. It seemed as though the teenaged witch was far more prepared to piss off the local cops than the ancestors. ”Can you call it a break in if you’ve got the codes?” For part of the building at least. The last door would take the sort of magic she couldn’t bring to bear in there. The store room she’d talked Mikey into didn’t have any keycards that would get them that far into the facility. Mab dipped her hand into her pocket and retrieved lanyards for each of them. ”Don’t drop them and if they don’t work on the second try don’t keep wasting time on them.” She crooked a finger as she walked past them, encouraging them both to go with her. The first door was the one she’d passed through with Mikey the last time … when it had been unlocked. This time it took just a tap of the card around her neck to have the keyboard lighting up green and the door popping open. Glancing behind her, just to make sure they weren’t being watched, Mab held the door open for the two of them to slip past her.

Tobi’s obsession with Kai had led him to the car lot at Whitmore. He was so fixated on dealing with his brother that he looked past the glaring red flags Mab had been putting up since they met. A woman who claimed she could do what his whole coven couldn’t. The shit didn’t even sound believing yet here he was agreeing to help Mab with whatever plan she had brewing up. He hadn’t figured out why she needed him specifically. It wasn’t as if he was armed with all the magic in the world. Without the coven alongside him, he was a hell of a lot weaker. Samuel had been banging on about the light on the front of Tobi’s bike for weeks now, but it was summer now. Lighter nights and all that shit so there was no need. He should have known Mab would have wanted them to meet after sundown, leaving Tobi gliding through the streets using his phone. It worked just as well. He whizzed past a blonde girl, glancing back for a brief moment. Was she the other one? Or just a student on her way home? She flashed him a smile and Tobi was about to return the smile when his bike hit a small bump causing him to turn back around instantly. The bright curly girl was in fact Mab’s second accomplice. She didn’t give Mab the same warm smile as she’d given him. She didn’t want to be there either. “Pleeease I’m probably older than you… on paper.” It was exhausting as hell living in this teenager's body. “I’m a punctual person.” When he said the same thing to Evelyn at the Christmas party she looked at him like he had two heads. There was no time for modesty when putting the overalls on. The quicker he put them on the quicker they could be out of there. “Yes! A bright colour would be so much better.” Maybe if he rolled the sleeves and legs up they would look better too. He glanced over at the other girl, “Digging the belt idea. Something to accentuate the waist.” Not that he had a waist to accentuate underneath the fabric. He was built like an ironing board. “Clearly.” His gaze fell on Mab, with a tight smile on his face. Tobi had no room to talk about fashion, according to Ethan, who constantly made jokes about his out-of-date fashion. Now he’d be calling it ‘vintage.’ after Cassie’s comment. Coerced was a pretty fitting word for what Mab was doing. Okay, granted there were no threats lingering over their heads as such, but she was still lingering something over them. For Cassie it was grimories. “Coerced. Asked nicely. Basically the same thing.” He said with a shrug before looking back at Cassie, “A promise to keep my psychopathic brother locked in a prison world forever.” Apparently the coven had failed to do so. A break in? “God damn it. My parents are gonna be pissed.” He muttered to himself quietly. Well, they’d only be pissed if he got caught. Nonetheless, he threw his cell and wallet into the trunk of Mab’s car, “Yeah we get it. One vampire in return for the grimoire. No vampire, no grimoire.” Self-explanatory. He reached forward and took hold of one of the lanyards. “Understood.” He said with a firm nod, slipping the lanyard around his neck. Tobi glanced over at Cassie, “Let’s do this shit.” He spoke confidently before following Mab into the building. CASSIE LUANNA & MAB CARMELLO

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ “A GRIMOIRE, SOZ. You totally made it seem like more, though. Jus’ sayin’.” Cassie rolled her eyes playfully, sending Tobi her brightest smile. “Um… sounds like some major family drama. I’m an only child, though, so… can’t relate.” Cassie giggled. Honestly, even though she’d only just met Tobi, she really hoped everything worked out for him. That sounded real stressy, and she wouldn’t put it past Mab to flake.
Shit, should she be worried?
Well, Cassie figured it didn’t really matter anymore, ‘cause they were about to head inside. Break inside. She laughed at Tobi’s comment about his parents, entirely sure it was a joke until she realized he wasn’t laughing. Whoopsies. “Pretty sure the cops still say it is,” Cassie said to Mab, trying to gloss over the whole parents thing, and grabbed the lanyard from her. “Cool! Now we look all official.” Slipping hers over her head, Cassie let it dangle from her neck and began walking in the same direction, though she stayed a few steps behind and trotted alongside Tobi.
“Don’t worry,” She assured him in a voice just above a whisper, “We’re not gonna get caught. Anybody who sees us will be like ‘ew, no way somebody would wear those outfits without being paid to’ and they won’t suspect a thing.” Cassie giggled, nudging him softly.
Thankfully, Mab’s key card allowed them to enter, only complimenting Cassie’s point. She flashed a wide smile at Tobi, “See?! Told ya. We’re all good.” Scurrying through the door, Cassie started walking forward proudly, though began to slow down when she realized she didn’t exactly have a gameplan here. Mab was more than a little tight-lipped; she probably wanted to be all in charge and whatever. Cassie stopped and turned, smiling at both of them like this was all normal. “C’mon, slowpokes,” She said lightly, though her voice was extremely quiet━she was still super worried about getting caught.

Mab tucked her tongue into the pocket of her cheek, her teeth biting down on it for a moment to avoid the temptation to snap her fingers at the two of them to get them back on the track. She’d never really been through that teenaged mooning phase, fluttering lashes at the opposite sex just because they were cute. There’d been on room for that in her great-grandmother’s home. Sweet talking? Twirling her hair around her finger? Putting on a pretty dress just to try and convince some idiot with no clue about what was really important. Prom? No. All a waste of time. Just like this.
She waited impatiently, biting her tongue again as Cassie tried to turn the whole thing into a fashion show. Like blending in what wasn’t of importance here. A bland look pasted in place as Tobi shot back an answer to her sarcasm about just that. Green eyes flat, hard, lips not so much as twitching in response to that tight smile on his lips. Eventually the two of them would focus, if not? That thought had her twitching faintly. At least the two of them knew what she might be capable of, Mikey had walked into the whole thing blind.
Now the sweet smile returned, a quick flash of teeth as Tobi tried to split hairs. Coercion was what would come now if they didn’t hurry up. The last time she’d been here they’d left the building burning, if that hadn’t done something to pep up security she wasn’t sure what would. ”Not close,” she said simply. ”A promise to get what you so desperately want. That’s a bargain, a deal.” The same as Cassie had for the grimoire that she was now dickering about. Mab sighed, tilted her head. ”You both have what you want out of this. Agreed?” There was something just a little impatient in her voice for now.
Too much time and too much information had already passed. She was starting to feel impatience building under her skin. The Augustines weren’t fools, someone would be watching the campus and this was suspicious enough. ”Only if you get caught, Tobi,” Mab reminded him as Cassie laughed at his mutter. ”The cops won’t even know this happened if you don’t screw up.” One vampire, one grimoire each. They both got what they wanted and she would exchange St John for her freedom and Joseph’s life. Not such a complicated equation.
Getting into the building with the keycards would be the last easy part. Mab handed each of them one, was glad to hear Tobi stop joking as he slipped it around his neck. Official, just the janitorial team arriving for the last part of the clean-up. Her jaw tightened with the urge to tell the girl to be quiet, but that didn’t matter, not yet. She swiped her own card, already feeling that faint tingle of power crackling over her skin like static. Last time she managed to get as far as the store room before it had started to overwhelm her.
The two of them went in ahead of her. Mab let the door swing shut quietly before she lifted her chin to gesture past Cassie. ”That way. The doorway at the end of the hall.” The cards should work there, and then it became more of a guessing game. ”You’ll go ahead of me. There may be a spell on the door, but it’s not there to stop you. You go through. The storage facility should be on the left. You follow the hallway until you find a more heavily shielded door. It won’t open with your cards so that’s all gonna be on you. Don’t forget the directions. If you get caught in here, I can’t do anything for you. You understand?” Mab’s voice grew tighter as she advanced down the hallway. Only a few corridors away the vampire was rotting in his cell, as much a pawn in this all as they were. One to be sacrificed now. The spell crackled harder over her as she approached the door, the cold sweat slicking skin gone pale as she stopped a few feet short of the store room door and pointed ahead where Cassie and Tobi would have to go alone.

Obviously Tobi agreed to whatever shit Mab needed behind that door otherwise he wouldn’t have been stripping down to his jocks to climb into a hideous boiler suit. He turned his attention back to Cassie, “An only child? How does it feel to live my dream?” Maybe one or two siblings would have been fine but his parents needed a set of twins so they were churning them out until they had Liv and Luke. No wonder Tobi didn’t give a shit about the coven and they’re stupid rules. To say that Mab went out of her way to find Cassie and Tobi for this big adventure it seemed like she had little faith in the pair. As if they were going to get caught. He’d spent a large part of his teenage years sneaking in and out of his bedroom window without getting caught so this would be a breeze compared to that. Tobi let out a quiet laugh at Cassie’s joke, “Yeah… isn’t that the reason you got us these awful outfits and cards so that if someone sees us we can pretend we work there.” A get out of jail free excuse, but he doubted it would wash well. If the pair ran into trouble they were pretty much screwed unless they used their magic, which he wouldn’t even think twice about. Of course he would unleash hell on anyone who threatened to stand in their way. Despite his light-hearted jokes, the life of his family was on the line. He needed to find a way to lock Kai up again because currently, they were all walking around with a target on their back, waiting for Kai to strike a second time. He followed Cassie into the building. Cassie stormed off ahead as if she knew where she was going, which was a relief because Tobi didn’t have a fucking clue where to go. He glanced back at Mab as she spoke, although there was a blank look on his face as he tried to process the instructions given to him. Shit, he probably shouldn’t have smoked before coming here. “Sounds good.” He flashed her a wide smile before turning back to Cassie and scurrying along to join her. “Okay I process about half of what she said… something about a door and a shield.” He registered the first bit which was to go straight ahead to a door that may or may not have a spell on it. Tobi continued to follow Cassie down towards the first door, treading carefully and glancing back over his shoulder to see if anyone was there. They approached the first door, which didn’t open with the keycard. “I love how Mab just hangs back there y’know near the exit ready to leave if anything goes wrong.” He wasn’t sure whether Mab couldn’t help them if they got caught or didn’t want to help them. He placed his hand on the locked door, “Dissero” He muttered quietly and the door clicked open. He looked over at Cassie with another wide grin on his face before pushing the door open. “Okay… so… what now?” He turned to Cassie, realising he couldn’t remember the rest of the instructions from Mab. ━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ OF COURSE MAB WASN’T GONNA FOLLOW them in━she’d leave the heavy lifting to her witchy-minions and disappear when shit hit the fan. If. Totally an if; she wasn’t gonna put any bad vibes into the universe.
Donned in her ‘jailbreak’ attire and super-official keycard, Cassie slipped through the first door with Tobi on her heels and turned to beam at them. Cassie gave Mab her best salute, chiming, “Yes, ma’am, yes!” In a (very awesome) military-dude impression.
Soon enough, she and Tobi were alone, and Cassie snorted at his admission. “Don’t worry, I remember. Forward, left, storage, spell, jailbreak.” Cassie nodded curtly, still half in that soldier act.
Tobi did the first spell and, because Cassie knew Mab would be staring like a total control freak, she turned to twiddle her fingers at the older woman before they disappeared. The door shut behind them, and Cassie puffed out a breath like she’d been holding it in for years. “Storage room on the left,” She answered first, and then, “God, Mab’s so, like, ugh. I’m so happy I’ve got you here now to talk about her, ‘cause, like, oh my God.” Cassie laughed, and though she was aware she hadn’t said many words at all, she trusted Tobi to get the gist of it. He seemed like he was around her age, though he’d made that comment about being older than Mab on paper. Cassie wasn’t, but she could still kinda relate.
Cassie popped open the door to the storage room with her keycard, getting a bit of glee out of the satisfying beep and green light. Pushing the door open, she held it for Tobi and then kept wandering forward. “It’s like she’s never met a real person before us. And, like, what the hell is this even for? She didn’t tell me. Did she tell you?” Cassie asked, looking sideways at Tobi. “I mean, she said it was about this vamp dude letting her uncle die, but not that she killed him, technically. I dunno. Seems sus.”
Finally, they approached the aforementioned ‘heavily shielded door,’ and Cassie tried the same simple unlocking spell Tobi had used earlier. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. Cassie wasn’t entirely sure it was a boundary spell, but she did the reversal anyway, “Consilium.” Thankfully, with a little magical shove, it worked. Smiling brightly and totally proud of herself, Cassie practically skipped into the next room.
Until she saw what was in there.
It was literally a prison cell. Her stomach clenched, a deep frown pulling the edges of her lips. She saw the guy in there, probs the one Mab was after, and cleared her throat awkwardly as she stepped in. “Um… hi.” Cassie practically squeaked, “Are you… the vampire?” She realized Mab had never given her a name. “We’re here to break you out!” Cassie added, raising her arms for a little fanfare, giving measly jazz hands.
With one quick look at Tobi, she nodded, took a deep breath and lifted her arms. Then she started a spell━the spell━the one that would finish this job for Mab (and then hopefully make her leave them the fuck alone). The metal binding popped, and any magical spells dropped, setting him free. Even if Mab wanted to go after him or whatever, Cassie was happy they were gonna set this guy free. She knew what it was like to be trapped, and she wouldn’t wish that on her greatest enemy.

The mix of ice cold water and his own spilled blood had run in pink rivulets over the floor of his cell. Concrete stained by it after years of being painted by the result of the Augustine’s experiments. Enzo sprawled back against the bars, legs splayed in front of him, what was left of the white t-shirt they’d tossed in after him a week ago hung in a spider’s web of threads over his chest. His head lulled listlessly, eyes dulled by the loss of blood staring down at the smooth skin of his chest. No sign of Maxfield’s torture. Not a single mark left on him after decades of this. Enzo let his eyes shut, frowning heavily before he slid down to lay flat on the floor. That had always been Maxfield’s aim, seeing how much they could withstand, trying to build himself something that could take more while destroying everything they seemed to be. The perfect killing machine. The perfect threat. Just as Chiara had once believed her pet vampire would be. If she could see him now she’d have revelled at just how low he’d been brought - right before she stomped him out like a cockroach.
A week past he’d thought the time had finally come. Laying his head back against the floor, Enzo frowned and closed his eyes. Most of what happened outside the cell he had no awareness of, but on the table, again, he’d heard the sirens start to shriek, a rain of water somewhere outside of that stark white room. Maxfield had hesitated for just a moment before he’d rushed out. There was a hiss of air, a scent of smoke on what escaped into the room and then raised voices outside. He’d strained against the restraints, feeling the battered sack of his heart squeeze harder like he could wring another ounce of strength out of his weakened body. He hadn’t got as much as a millimetre of give out of them before Maxfield was back, looking a little rumpled, but ready to launch right back in.
Had it been a coincidence, or had Chiara Meraviglia finally tracked him down? Each passing day added weight to the doubts. By now she was likely dead and he was merely using the memory of the woman who held him in her blackened fist to mark off his days in his own personal and eternal hell.
Everything around here was well maintained - all the better to make sure that the experiments didn’t manage to break through a weakness and escape again - but there was still a faint hiss of the door to the storage area opening before the girl bounced through. Enzo saw the flash of blonde hair from the corner of his eye, the figure in the blue work suit, small and delicate, nothing like the women who had worked for the Augustines on and off.
He pushed up on his elbows, pushing back towards the rear of the cell as he returned the frown that twisted her features. There was a guy behind her, taller, just as thin with gawky hands and wrists sticking out of the arms and legs of the identical suit he wore. Enzo saw echoes of himself in the kid, although he’d had tuberculosis to blame for his gaunt appearance. ”Hello,” he croaked. It felt almost strange to talk, after months of being kept in here alone - Flynn had been taken and hadn’t returned again, if he was lucky he was dead.
The vampire. Enzo started to laugh, the sound breaking off into a cough as the girl flapped her hands around, an obvious celebration. ”And you’re the witch?” He nodded wearily. Chiara’s people had come, just a few decades too late to have themselves any sort of a worthy opponent. ”I guess Chiara wanted to do it herself. Those bones gettin’ a little old to make the trip to … me … huh?” But she hadn’t died. The Queen of the Black Hand had held on long enough to do what she had sworn.
There wasn’t enough blood in his system to make a real play for the girl, or the silent scarecrow behind her, but Enzo pushed to his feet. He backed up against the bars as the spell began to spill from her lips. The sensation was familiar, crackling over his skin like electricity, leaving something inside of him crawling before the lock popped.
Freedom.
Like a bubble bursting it was all gone. He could breathe again, move again and there were no flames to stop him this time. ”Give her my regards.” The words emerged in a growl as he threw himself at her, at them both. Black veins crawled under his eyes, fangs piercing his gums to glean in the light. There was another momentary bite of magic, pain erupting in his head, but then they were tumbling down. His fangs grazed flesh, just enough blood spreading on his tongue to give him a boost as he scrambled over them and blurred out of the prison that had held him for more than 70 years.
