She wasn’t there for the history, she just wanted to touch everything. Like a little kid at the toy store, wanting to put their grubby hands on everything. That was Winter. The museum was a toy story and everything inside were toys to her. Obviously she knew someone somewhere cared about this shit and would kill her for touching something, but that's why they keep the very old stuff behind those glass cabinets. Keeping the kids and Winter away from them. Touching people and finding out what could happen to them wasn’t fun, but touching something historical and finding out its past was. It was the only ability of hers that she was a little bit scared of. She still wasn’t sure where it all came from either. Her auntie Polly could have been a complete nutter, making all those stories up about seeing things. Her dad didn’t seem He was quick to tell Winter she was talking rubbish when she told him about her brother and the photograph. He also dismissed her when she told him she foresaw his death. She mourned the loss of her dad but in the same way everyone else. She shed a few tears before leaving the house. That was about as far as her grief stretched. It was difficult to cry over someone who didn’t give a shit about you. This time she’d be more vigilant. Not like in Seattle where she was caught within a few minutes. Plus, this was a smaller museum in a tiny town. She was kind enough to throw a few dollars in the donation bucket though and a sweet wrapper. Okay, the sweet wrapper wasn’t on purpose but it was stuck to the dollar. She dug the naked sweet out of her pocket and slipped it in her mouth, chewing on it as she wandered through the first floor. Nothing was standing out to her, so she moved up to the second floor and eventually the third. Ugh, everything was behind stupid glass cabinets, leaving her peering in like Dudley staring at that snake in Harry Potter. She would occasionally have a read of the information alongside it. She pulled a second sweet out of her mouth, popping that one into her mouth. Eyes darting around the Saxons history section until she spotted a gold-looking helmet in the corner. There was some red rope about it, but no glass. She hurried over towards it. Apparently, it belonged to some soldier, but she didn’t need to read all the information on the little plaque. Winter peered over her shoulder, making sure the coast was clear before edging forward to place fingers on the helmet gently. A noise pulled her back to reality. History was about to repeat itself as Winter turned around, with the sweetest smile on her face. The other female didn’t look as sweet though. “Before you tell me off… that should be with all the Roman shit over that” She pointed towards the other section, still chewing on her hard sweet, “Belonged to some kind of king, maybe…” She didn’t get that far before she was interrupted. “And…” She turned back to the helmet, pulling yet another sweet out of her jean pocket, “He died from a sword through the throat so the helmet did nothing for him in the end” She didn’t give a shit about sounding crazy, but she didn’t want this helmet to be in the wrong section with wrong information attached to it. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY HAD COME IN as late as possible that day, eager to work later into the night, which was exactly when she felt the most productive. Well, it was when she was the most awake, too. The museum was silent at night, and she didn’t have to worry about people and customer service and all of the shit that (in her opinion) shouldn’t have been her job. But Mystic Falls was small, and so they shared the wealth around━if you could really call it that.
She was carrying a box of artifacts through the history exhibit when she saw one of those pesky museum-goers reaching out to touch part of the display. Penny nearly threw up from her rage.
Feeling her fingertips warm and sizzle around the box, she stomped over and glared, snapping, “Don’t touch that!” Was she fucking stupid? And then had the nerve to tell Penny it was in the wrong exhibit? She listened to the nonsensical babble, growing more and more irritated until the end of the girl’s explanation. Penny had been around a long time, and she knew how to sniff out bullshit, but this did not feel like bullshit. She wasn’t about to underestimate the girl’s age due to her looks━appearance meant nothing in the grand scheme of things; Penny knew that━but the evident confidence in the girl’s face swayed her (or at least made her think twice). And it wasn’t as if Penny and her sister were the only supernatural creatures in Mystic Falls━not by a long shot.
“And how do you know that, hm? Are you some sort of witch?” Her tone was condescending, as if speaking to a petulant child━which she most likely was. Furthermore, it could be easily passed off as a rude remark; witches weren’t real, of course. Penny hadn’t lived until four centuries after the end of the Anglo-Saxons, and she wondered if this girl was truly old, or simply just a kid with special powers. Either way, Penny was missing out on precious time with her rocks.

Her Aunt Polly told her that no one would ever believe Winter if she told people she could see into the future, so she might as well own it because they’d laugh it off. Psychics had been around since forever and no one seemed to bat an eyelid. Some would be labelled crazy, like her Aunt Polly, which Winter was keen to avoid. She took her Aunt’s advice though and embraced what she’d been given, even making a living out of it. Almost everyone who came to her was skeptical. They were just there to see what the girl with the crystal ball had to say. Her dad was her first non-believer and that didn’t work out too well for him. In a few years though they’d realise that Winter was telling the truth. Even then there would be a few people who’d claim she was reading body language or some shit. It didn’t help that there were whole documentaries out there debunking psychics. Winter prepared herself to be yelled at again by a member of staff. Calling her an idiot for touching artifacts and asking her did she realise how old the item was. A simple touch could make the whole thing fall apart, but realistically it was their fault for leaving it so open on display. The piece was literally within arm's reach where a kid could touch it with their chocolate-covered paws. At least Winter’s fingers were clean. This woman who was confronting her was intimidating though. Most of the staff looked pissed, but she looked furious. Like she was about to snap Winter in half, but the worst thing that was going to happen was she’d been kicked out of the museum. “Nope, not a witch. Though that would be pretty cool.” If psychics existed then surely witches and warlocks did? She often wondered what else existed out there. Like, did angels and devils exist? “When I touch things I can read the history. Not everything though, like, if I touched this cardboard box I wouldn’t see anything because it’s a bit of cardboard.” She chewed down on her sweet, her eyes still on the helmet, “But something like this has a crazy amount of history.” Hence why her prints were now on it. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY THOUGHT ABOUT PUBLIC execution and when it’d stopped being socially acceptable. She was nearly branded a thief━well, she was, it just healed. Then they tried to cut her hands off. Anyway, Penny knew if she strangled this girl in the middle of the museum Penny would be the one suffering the consequences. Maybe she could drag her to the back and figure something else out.
‘Nope, not a witch. Though that would be pretty cool.’
Raising a brow, she waited for a few more moments, hoping for something else to bleed from the girl’s lips. She had to give herself away in either direction, didn’t she? Either she was something supernatural, or she wasn’t. The girl’s interest and innocent curiosity lent to the fact that she might be something━just not a witch. She didn’t immediately laugh and whisk Penny’s accusation away; instead she… ah, there it was.
“Well, why not the cardboard box? Surely it has a history. It was created, and about a million hands touched it before mine.” Raising her chin an inch or two, Penny looked down at the girl━literally and figuratively. She considered her options here. Either this girl was a total liar and trying to wiggle out of this, or she was incredibly useful.
“Fine. Come with me.” Without giving the girl a choice, Penny rested her box on one hip and used her newly freed hand to snatch the girl’s wrist, dragging her to the back rooms. Down a few corridors and through one doorway brought them to Penny’s office, where she finally released the girl.
“Right. Sit down.” She hissed, shutting the door and setting down her box. “Or don’t, I don’t give a shit. Just don’t move.” Penny rounded her desk and kneeled down to the safe below it, inconspicuously putting in the code. Once it opened, the dragon retrieved Lawrence’s ring and locked the safe again. She stood, holding it out to the girl. “Take this, tell me its history.” This was the only way she could verify the girl’s story and learn more about Lawrence━enough to (hopefully) throw something back in his face the next time he got ballsy and came to bother her.

She could totally do this girl's job. Walk around with cardboard boxes, outing things in the right place. People study artefacts for a long time to determine the origin but winter could do it with a single touch. She didn’t care if people thought she was weird. She was cool. Even if Lex constantly told her she wasn’t but then he’d be quick to defend himself when she called him an AI. Winter watched as the other girl eyed her up. A judging gaze darted up and down her body causing Winter to frown a little. Was she trying to see if she was hiding something under her clothes? Stealing a piece of history to study at home. Or maybe she was just sussing Winter out. “Yeah but it hasn’t got much of a history.” It would have been boring to watch some measly box get passed around for years, from hands to hands, “I don’t really know how it works. It’s usually old shit, like jewellery, guns, helmets…” She glanced back at the helmet for a moment. “Maybe it’s just shit with an interesting history.” She mused to herself as the other girl grabbed hold of her wrist. Here we go. She was about to get thrown out of the museum. Usually, the security guards would guide her towards the door, but this member of staff was personally escorting her out of the building. God, she could at least loosen her grip a little. Winter wasn’t some criminal who was running out with jewels sorted in her bra, but then she realised the employee was tugging her away from the exit. This was going to be even worse than being thrown out. The girl was planning on telling her off. As instructed Winter sat down on the chair in the corner of the office, scanning her surroundings as she did so. “I don’t have any parents you can like call to come and pick me up y’know.” As if her dad would have bothered to move off the couch. The girl wasn’t retrieving a phone though, but a ring. Something to test Winter’s abilities. With a sigh, she took hold of the ring. She’d never been one to work well under pressure. She took a deep breath, holding the ring in the palm of her hands and closed her eyes. It took a few seconds before anything came to her. “It’s old.” Although the employee probably already knew this, “A wedding ring, but the wedding never went ahead. Sad times… The groom to be was like banished by his family or something because…” Her blood ran cold as further images flashed in her mind. A vampire? “It, um…” She paused, swallowing harshly as her stomach turned over, “The dude has killed people. Ruthlessly. Sometimes with another girl as well but he dumped her which he seemed really cut up over.” Claiming to be a psychic was fine, but saying vampires existed was absolutely absurd. “Um, okay so he moved to some city, ah wait, New Orleans… I’ve never been there, but it looks pretty cool… um, more dead people, failed relationships and lots of partying… and now we’re in Mystic Falls. Long lost sister he thought was dead, a cute best friend and a very good looking woman who he’s… oh ew.” Her eyes fluttered open, “Did you steal this from someone?” She exclaimed. A bar, the vampire and the employee sucking on his fingers. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ “OH, POOR YOU. JOIN the fucking club, kid.” Penny scoffed, not bothering to ease the girl’s concerns. She’d realize soon enough that Penny wouldn’t rat her out, but instead use her to her advantage.
Penny was much too old to flood with childlike excitement at the first sign of something good happening. She’d gotten it when her sister returned to life, but that was a one-time thing. Penny didn’t expect her existence to be filled with happiness all the time, as it hadn’t for the majority. However, part of her wanted the girl to be right, to have this new tool in sorting the museum’s artifacts. The other part couldn’t wait to grind the ‘I told you so’ in her face like sand in her eye.
The hesitation had Penny holding her breath without realizing it. Finally, the girl started speaking, and Penny’s eyes widened, a smile growing on her lips. It was masked by the time she was finished, though, with all these new facts stuck in Penny’s back pocket. A wedding ring? Being banished by his family━yup, that was the fact-check she needed. The other things were just helpful.
Apparently, she wasn’t the ‘very good-looking woman.’ Penny wasn’t jealous, but who the fuck else would bother sleeping with that irritating sad-sack? There had to be better-looking men in Mystic Falls. Men like Finn, who were tough on the inside and out, not those like Lawrence who cried every time something minor happened to them. He was still sad about his wife and kids, but that wasn’t minor, and Finn didn’t let Penny take his ring━he nearly killed her for it.
Speaking of, it seemed she had a knack for plucking the wedding rings off these boys.
‘Did you steal this from someone?’
Penny leaned forward from where she’d been hovering above the girl and plucked the ring from her hands. “That’ll do.” She stated simply instead of answering, and slipped the ring onto her middle finger, admiring it. In all honesty, it pained her to part with it for as long as it took the girl to relay the story. “It’s my ring, and that’s all you need to worry about. I’m Penny, the museum’s mineralogy curator, and I’d like to offer you a job here, working under me. You’d be able to make money by verifying different items for me━money that would likely go a long way for an orphan.” Penny shot down a condescending smile, acting as though she hadn’t pulled that one out just to strike a nerve.

Winter glanced over at the stranger as she declared she was also an orphan. “Just saying.” She muttered, following the blonde to one of the many offices. She didn't call the cops though, instead she handed Winter a ring. A wedding ring nonetheless. Once that she’d apparently stolen from this unnamed vampire. When Winter questioned about this she leaned forward and took the ring back, telling her it was her own ring. Winter wasn’t convinced, but whatever. It wasn’t her ring, she didn’t care about it. It was unlikely someone who had actually stolen something was going to call the cops because Winter touched a few dusty artifacts. The only thing she’d ever stolen for personal gain was a few sweets from the store near her house. She also stole other things such as milk and bread, but that was in order to survive. Sometimes the store employees saw her doing but never did anything. It was a sad scene watching a child take the essentials when there were aisles full of toys, sweets and other fun things. “A job?” Winter exclaimed, her eyes widening with excitement. A real job as well, rather than taking dollars from members of the public to tell them about their future. Fuck, a real job meant paying taxes and shit. Winter hesitated for a moment, especially when Penny threw the orphan word back at her. It sounded like her dream job though. Touching old items and finding out their history. “Maybe.” She didn’t want to sound too keen, despite the excitement in her voice a few seconds ago. “I’ll have a think about it and come back to you.” Maybe even negotiate a salary of some sort, rather than being stuck on a minimum wage like the Mystic Grill and Coffee Bean were offering. Winter got to her feet, “I’m assuming you ain’t gonna call the cops and I’m free to go yeah?” She couldn't wait to run back to Lex and tell him everything, not that he'd care. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ OF COURSE THE LITTLE ORPHAN WOULDN’T TAKE Penny’s proposal outright. She had to think on it, digest it, do some research, and wonder why something positive was happening to her. Was it too good to be true? Well, the child would crawl back into her rathole and have to decide for herself but, ultimately, Penny trusted the money would drive her back to the museum. The dragon could understand (and relate to) the hesitation━the feeling that she didn’t deserve what was presented.
But Penny could see how excited the girl was a second before, and then how she attempted to coolly play it off like Penny was blind━or stupid. “Fine.” She tried not to sound too condescending or to snort too loudly. She was confident the history-reader would be back here, but Penny wasn’t exactly willing to let such a useful ability run away.
“Sure.” She pasted on a too-sweet smile, tight at the edges, and leaned sideways, snatching up one of her business cards from the desk. “Call me when you’re ready to accept my offer.” Handing over the card, Penny’s grin turned slowly into a smirk, and she moved back to tend to the box she’d previously been holding, letting the girl go freely.
