Whilst Lex was off playing with his new friend, Ben? No. Matt? No. Whatever he had one of those standard traditional names unlike Winter who only received her name because her mom felt a shiver up her spine and saw snow on the ground outside. She couldn’t even be arsed to thinking properly of a name for her daughter, too busy rushing to get ready so she could leave the hospital. Returning to the life she had chosen to lead and a baby in her arms wasn’t going to stop her. She placed Winter down on the floor as she went about her business, ignoring the screams of her newborn. Obviously, Winter couldn’t remember any of this. It was just pieces of information she had picked up from her dad, when he was coherent. Sometimes the kids at school would mock Winter for her name until she punched them in the face. They quickly learned that she wasn’t going to let people bully her because she was a little bit different. Tatty clothes hung off her body and she was using a carrier bag as a school bag, until Lori gifted her a rucksack. Looking back, it was definitely stolen. Vivid images of Lori in the kitchen prying the security tag from the bag before handing it over to Winter. No doubt half the stuff in her house was stolen. When she was younger Winter would ask about her mom. Begging her dad to tell her stories about her mom, desperate to feel a connection with the woman who had given birth to her, but Seth had no stories to tell. He barely knew Dahlia when he got her pregnant. It registered with her from a young age that her parents didn’t give a shit about her. Jeremiah did though. Winter sent him a text as soon as she arrived in the small town, telling him she was in Mystic Falls with a friend. By friend she meant a random boy, she’d met at the fair and agreed to drive him here. Thank fuck they managed to get the van started again, otherwise, Winter would have been showering Lex with frogs. Lex wasn’t really giving her an answer when she asked how long they were staying for. She was convinced he liked being awkward on purpose, but after a few months, she realised they weren’t leaving anytime soon. Winter headed off to the library that morning to print off her resume. Unlike Lex, she didn’t have the bank of mom and dad to fall back on. She’d start at that coffee shop that always looked busy, then maybe that Grill place. So annoying she wasn’t allowed to serve drinks yet, leaving her cleaning tables. She walked down the sidewalk, reading her resume as she was walking, glancing up every now and then to make sure she wasn’t able to crash into someone. This time she looked up, but her gaze didn’t flick back down immediately. What the fuck was Jeremiah doing her? She stuffed her resumes into her little tote bag before walking across the road towards him, a skip in her step. “Planning on surprising me?” She beamed, with a grin on her face as she stepped up off the road. A deep frown on her face as she looked him up and down, “Have you cut your hair? And the fuck is with these clothes” She edged back a little taking a full look at him. “I like it. New year, new you. Ready to impress the ladies of Mystic Falls” With his sister at his arm playing wing woman. “Anyway, I’m walking around town handing my resume in everywhere and anywhere, but let's get a milkshake” There was that ice cream parlour she’d walked past a few times that looked popular. ━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ TRUDGING DOWN THE STREETS of Mystic Falls, Elias felt a buzz at the back of his skull like he was about to get another Reaper call. He had to be the first one there, as well, otherwise, who knew what Damien or one of the others might do. Instead of a call, his phone buzzed with another message from that damn group chat. He sincerely regretted giving Leah his phone number. Elias considered not responding, figuring he could do without the bullshit they yapped back and forth, but he was typing back almost instantly. Cory seemed like an alright kid; maybe if he wasn’t such a little bitch he’d do a bit better in life.
Deciding on whether or not to pick up a coffee━because De León might want one and would bitch at him if he didn’t get it for her━Elias stuffed his hands back into the pockets of his trench coat and didn’t halt his journey until some child came waltzing up like she knew him.
‘Planning on surprising me?’
At first, Elias was merely confused, hazel eyes ticking back and forth as if he could find the person she was actually speaking to. She stepped back, however, and made a bunch of comments about his look that had his face twisting up. The ladies of Mystic Falls? Who the fuck━
He didn’t cut in until he was able to, when she suggested milkshakes and seemed to finally breathe. “Who the fuck are you?” Elias asked, standing in the same place, rigid and incredibly uncomfortable. He was sure he had no idea who she was, that they’d never met before, and now he was suddenly wondering about the population of crack heads in Mystic Falls. “Listen, kid, you have me mistaken for someone else. I’m not getting… milkshakes with you.” The idea of them alone had him wanting to gag, a disgusted expression drifting over his otherwise sharp features.

She was forever grateful that Jeremiah made the decision to find his little sister. There was finally someone in her life who gave a shit about her and it was actually someone who was blood-related. She even had someone to put down on paperwork when they asked who her next of kin was. Before she’d write a fake number for her dad, even a fake address. It wasn’t as if he would answer the phone anyway and even if he did he wouldn’t leave the house to check up on his only daughter. Jeremiah had been there to fill in the blanks about her mom, finally getting answers to questions her dad had been dodging for years. To no surprise, their mom was a waste of time as well. Maybe it had been a blessing in disguise that her mom died. She gave him the bare minimum information when he asked about her trip to Mystic Falls. She didn’t know how to explain she’d met another psychic and they were able to bond over their abilities, but that was about it because realistically the pair had nothing else in common. Lex was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, whereas Winter wasn’t. It was a little bit strange that her half-brother had come all the way to Virginia to see her, but Winter was just happy to see him. Bouncing across the road with a smile on her face, but he wasn’t wearing the same expression as her. In fact, he looked confused as hell as she rattled on about ladies, milkshakes and his fresh cut. “Shut up.” She replied with a quick laugh. Needless to say Jeremiah looked very uncomfortable with the whole situation, “Are you okay? You look a bit…” Not like him. Not as friendly and approachable, as he usually is. “The milkshakes at this ice cream parlour look insane. I really want to try the oreo one.” Winter leaned forward and tugged on his coat, “Come on. Let's go!” ELIAS ELLIOTT

━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ SHUT UP? SHUT UP? Who the hell did she think she was talking to? This was one of the many reasons Elias absolutely loathed children━their complete disregard for authority and lack of respect. He’d never acted like this as a teenager, which was his rough estimate of this girl’s age. She looked like jailbait.
“Why would I be okay right now?” Elias scoffed sourly. The crazy bitch pretending like she knew him was now asking why he looked uncomfortable━there was no fathomable reason for all of this, was there? She was irritating him faster than Elias thought possible, and he was irritated a lot.
Still on about cookies and milkshakes and whatever else. Elias made one swift movement with his arm, breaking her hold on him and scowling at the girl. That was the last straw━he wasn’t placating her anymore. “I won’t tell you again; I don’t know you, and I don’t want to get milkshakes.” He nearly hissed, jaw clenched as he looked down his nose at her. “If you’re… mentally unwell, maybe you should find somebody to help you take care of that.” She didn’t seem like those cracked-out homeless people one would find in a subway station, but Elias couldn’t think of any other reason for her to be so confused. His birth family had never been part of his life, and so he’d completely forgotten about his brother being a possibility.
Elias took a step back, then to the side, trying to get around her and out of her vicinity as swiftly as he could.

Okay, she wasn’t enjoying Jeremiah's vibe. She narrowed her eyes at him, folding her arms as she did so with a look of irritation. “I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking you. Gosh!” She said with a heavy huff. He had the cheek to say she could be a stroppy teenager at times, yet here he was being moody and standoffish. There was a flash of hurt across her face as Jeremiah pushed her away. Her mind wasn’t processing why he was being like this. Had he decided to turn his back on her? Leaving her completely alone in on this stupid planet. She felt her stomach lurch as tears almost sprung to her eyes. Maybe he was just pretending, but it wasn’t a funny joke. Plus, she’d never know him to joke in such a way. She watched as he stepped backwards, trying to escape her. “I’m not crazy.” She said sternly, stepping sideways to stop the male from leaving. “Who are you? Because whoever you are, I know someone who looks exactly like you. Identical in fact…” Her voice trailed off. Identical. “Fuck.” She muttered to herself, this time she was the one who stepped back staring intently at the other man. “You’re the one who was adopted.” She hated that Jeremiah's brother had been swept up by a nice family whilst he was left behind to deal with their mom. It didn’t seem fair that one twin got given everything whilst the other was neglected all his life. “You’re Jeremiah's twin.” Now her stomach lurched even further as she thought she was going to be sick. Suddenly the thought of having milkshakes fizzled from her mind. ELIAS ELLIOTT

━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ ELIAS WAS NEARLY FREE, but then the child stepped into his way and… dared to ask his name? After all this? After she thought she knew him anyway? He clenched his jaw and willed himself not to use more force on the girl━he’d snap her like a twig if she tried anything more, but he had to be careful. He wasn’t a mere human any longer.
“Leave me alone, kid.” He would arrest her for harassment if that’s what it took. Thinking only of himself, not following her mental trail at all, Elias kept his eyes on his goal: the rest of the fucking sidewalk. He couldn’t believe he’d let her dictate his actions for this long, and then…
‘You’re the one who was adopted.’
Elias was about to shove past her by then. He wished he had.
His hazel eyes snapped down to the girl, narrowing at her. She’d moved away by then, and had (unfortunately) captured his attention. Elias never thought about his birth family, the junkie mother and twin brother who meant nothing to him. He could take a fucking DNA test if he really cared that much about his genetics, but he wouldn’t have this child smearing shit about him around town. The last thing he needed was De León getting hold of information such as this.
“Mystery solved, then.” He said sourly, glancing around to ensure nobody was paying attention to them. He thought about teleporting them out of there and speaking to her someplace more private, but that would be far too obvious (and risky). “My name is Elias, but you can call me Agent Elliott━or, better yet, don’t refer to or contact me at all. And I’m an only child.” Stepping around her again, this time successfully, Elias had walked only three steps when he was mentally cursing himself and slowly turning around, glancing at her over his shoulder.
“He doesn’t live near here, correct? I was under the impression we were never likely to cross paths. Are you his…” Elias’ eyes trailed up and down her frame for a moment, looking rather perturbed and judgemental. “... consort? Ward?”

Jeremiah was warm and friendly, but this man wasn’t. He was rude and abrasive and for what? All because Winter mistook him for someone else and invited him out for milkshakes. Whoever the hell adopted him obviously didn’t teach him basic manners. Her words brought him back for a brief second, but he didn’t even care. He didn’t ask about his twin brother. When Jeremiah came knocking at her door, Winter was over the moon to find out she had other family members out there besides her deadbeat dad. “Well fuck you Agent Asshole.” She snapped loudly as he turned back around to leave. Clearly, he didn’t want to draw attention to himself but Winter didn’t care. She had spent her whole childhood being ridiculed so a few stares from strangers on the street wasn’t going to upset her. She made a mental note of his name so she could run back to Lex and ask him to do some checks on his fancy laptop. He claimed to be an absolute genius on the internet so surely he could track down more information about Elias. Birth parents, adoptive parents, that sort of thing. Winter watched as Elias went to walk away, but he stopped, turning back around to face her. Seattle. Whoever made you that promise was an idiot.” America was huge, but it wasn’t impossible for Jeremiah and Elias to never meet. “Consort or ward? Were you brought up in the 18th century?” Gosh, this guy became more and more irritating with every passing second, “Half-sister. We share the same mom.” Elias could put the rest together, after all he was an Agent and it seemed his life had been an absolute breeze compared to Winter and Jeremiah’s, which made her dislike him even more. ━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ AGENT ASSHOLE. SURPRISINGLY (OR PERHAPS NOT), IT WASN’T the first time he’d been called that. Elias took it in stride━if people like that thought you were an asshole, then you were probably doing your job correctly. Elias knew he was for a fact… but it was nice getting the reassurance.
“That’s the part where you’re supposed to introduce yourself.” Elias spoke in a demeaning tone. Clearly, she needed a little help to remember.
He should’ve left when he had the chance (now that he finally did). But of course, he was just a little bit curious. He didn’t care about them, not really, but this could easily spiral out into something he did not want. And if this kid decided to stick around… ah, he shouldn’t have told her about his job. She could show up at the police station and start wailing about him━that would be just his luck. Though, Elias wouldn’t hesitate to claim she was a troubled, homeless kid with mental issues and see her get carted off. At least it was true.
Seattle. Far enough, but what the hell was she doing here? “Nobody promised me anything; I said I was under the impression. Why have you come to Mystic Falls on your own, then?” And why wasn’t his biological ‘brother’ with her? Was she alone?
“No, that’s how you speak when you’re raised in a household without a dr-g problem and an average IQ level above seventy.” Elias scoffed, though he wondered if she even had a home, especially considering she was related through their mother. How had she survived in that ‘family’ long enough to avoid being taken away? It was a gift, Elias knew as much, but they were practically mangy dogs━they’d stick together through anything.
He nodded slowly, turning around to face the girl, though he didn’t come any closer. “I assume you stayed with your mother, grew up with him?” Not that he really cared, but it was his job to collect information on people, and he wanted a mental profile on this girl… this girl who was not his sister.

“Winter… but you can call me Your Majesty.” The oh-so-special agent liked to pretend he didn’t give a shit but it wasn’t every day someone came up to you on the street and claimed to be a family member. As the conversation dragged on she regretted ever opening her mouth in the first place. Whatever genes Agent Asshole picked up from his parents were the polar opposite of Jeremiah and the more she glared at him the more she started to pick apart his features. Everything about Elias was harsher than Jeremiah right down to the shape of his nose. Why the fuck did he care about why she was in Mystic Falls? Was going to run back to his special little office, log onto his special computer and search Winter’s name? Maybe when she first ran away her name would have flagged up in the system, but it wasn’t as if people were looking for her. Lex on the other hand had a family itching to find their son. “I live here.” Anyone else she would have rattled off the story about how she met Lex and the pair travelled here together in her battered van, but she wouldn’t give Elias the privilege of listening to that story, especially if he was an agent like he alleged. Lex’s name stayed out of her mouth. So he spoke using outdated words because he was scooped up by an intelligent family and had a silver spoon forced into his mouth from birth. Maybe his adoptive parents were the ones who lodged the stick up his ass as well. “I was raised by my dad actually.” In an environment that wasn’t much better than the one her mom would have provided, but again, she wouldn’t tell Agent Asshole that. For all he knew her dad could be an aerospace engineer with lots of money and a noble prize under his wing. “Our mom is dead.” She added very matter-of-factly with a shrug. Unlike her dad’s death, the death of her mom never fazed her given Winter had only just been put on the Earth. She’d seen pictures of her mom, but there were no stories shared with her about how sweet and loving her mom was. Her dad had nothing to say about her. In fact, he barely knew the woman he impregnated. ELIAS ELLIOTT - wanna wrap up with yours?

━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ ELIAS SUPPRESSED HIS LAUGH AT THE NAME ‘Winter.’ Seriously, how did someone go from Biblical names like Jeremiah and Elias to a fucking season? Even if they were doing smack. He only quirked a brow at her follow-up, not finding it nearly as amusing as she seemed to find herself.
He stayed for a moment. Only a moment, just to inquire, because why the hell not? He wouldn’t go searching for his biological family, and the information in files wasn’t the same as the kind that came from a family member’s mouth. It was more likely to be truthful or filled with biases that factual evidence didn’t contain, but Elias’ interest was vaguely peaked nonetheless.
She lives here. Present tense. Great. Mystic Falls was a small enough town, they could run into each other again. Thankfully, Elias could teleport and turn invisible.
By her dad? Interesting. Usually, fathers━especially in those situations━were less likely to take ownership of their children. Statistically, of course. She couldn’t have had an upbringing much different from how he imagined his brother’s to be, given her attitude and that they were familiar enough to get milkshakes. “Interesting.” He commented lamely, though it wasn’t, not really.
Our mom is dead.
He hoped she meant hers and Jeremiah’s because his mother wasn’t. Elias’ expression remained stoic━it didn’t send a flare through his stomach or his chest, and it didn’t spark anything in his brain. There were no feelings, no attachment, not even mild longing or curiosity. He simply didn’t care; Winter didn’t seem to, either. “Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later.” Elias spoke in the same manner she did, “My mother is still breathing, the last time I checked.” He added (just to drive the point home).
“I would appreciate your discretion with this; I’m not interested in meeting anyone else with a biological relation to me. And I assume we won’t see much of each other, either.” Elias knew it wasn’t strange to assume she’d want nothing to do with him after this━they’d clearly both rubbed one another the wrong way. He nodded curtly, then turned and walked in the opposite direction, eager to finally escape.
