If it was possible to have years knocked off his life his trip with Remzi certainly would have done that. Even though it had only been a few weeks Lawrence was glad to be back in Mystic Falls. Back home. At least Remzi wasn’t here either, causing mayhem and killing humans. He knew from the outset he wouldn’t be the one to force Remzi’s emotions back on, but he wanted to try and help the other vampire flip the switch back but it was hopeless. Apparently, Remzi had a brother living in Mystic Falls, a connection to his human days but then Remzi went and crossed a line by killing his brother’s first love. There was nothing more he could do for the other vampire, only to try and keep Remzi from making too many mistakes and cleaning up the dead bodies from Mystic Falls to New York. He hated to admit it to himself but there was a part of him that was envious of Remzi’s humanity free existence. He was void of all emotions and that in itself was exhilarating. For those few weeks in New York Lawrence lived as a real vampire. Avoiding the daylight, drinking all night and feeding off humans, before compelling them to forget. Remzi didn’t bother with the last part and drained every drop from his victims. It left an itch in his throat though after drinking from blood bags for so long, but he wasn’t going to bring that type of behaviour back to Mystic Falls (apart from avoiding daylight obviously). It could be easy to be swallowed up by that lifestyle. He did it once in New Orleans, basking in the perks of being a vampire with little regard to human life. Those few weeks with Remzi he slipped back into that life too, whilst trying to keep Remzi under control. Realistically, he owed Remzi nothing. The pair were friends, but not best friends, but Lawrence was doing it all to stop himself from feeling guilty over the fact Remzi had flipped the switch. He felt somewhat responsible for it as if sold the very idea to the other vampire by telling him how amazing it could be. Once it was all over and done with though, Remzi would be left with crippling regrets. Trying to explain to Teddy where he was going and why was challenging. Lawrence didn’t exactly explain the whole situation to his best friend but rather some washed-down version that another vampire needed his help. It was apparent Teddy had no idea that this little switch existed inside of a vampire's head and Lawrence didn’t want to go through all that with Teddy over the phone as he was trying to pack. It was something to be revisited over a bottle of tequila (or a cup of tea for Teddy). Back to the grind, as the humans would say. Back to the bar. He told Hector at the very last minute that he’d be leaving town with no real return date but promised he’d be back as soon as possible. Remzi made that decision easy for him when the pair pulled into a gas station and Remzi proceeded to snap Lawrence’s neck, leaving him behind to continue his emotion free killing spree alone. He didn’t start work for another hour and a half, but he was keen to leave Teddy’s apartment as soon as the sun set. Those fancy windows Teddy had in his apartment were literally saving his life at the moment. He arrived at the club. The place always seemed so quiet and empty without customers in there, but there was Kit behind the bar. “Hey” He called out as he approached the bar, sliding onto one of the seats at the end, “Can you pour me a shot of…” His eyes scanned the bottles behind the bar for a moment, “Tequila” Something to warm his insides before his shift. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ KIT COULD STILL FEEL her on his skin, like a thin layer of sweat, except she was worked into his epidermis. Long blonde hair around his fist or spilling onto his shoulder━usually like a platinum waterfall on her own shoulder, though, pooling down to whatever surface they were on. Fuck. He should’ve been thinking about Katja, the woman who’d slinked her way into his home, but perhaps that was exactly the reason he didn’t━Katja was a little too permanent, and a little too scary. The demon━despite literally coming from Hell━somehow was not. Normally, he could avoid her, she wasn’t so interested in him now that Kace was back, but because of Lawrence, he’d been working down there a lot more often. It was easier (or so he thought in the beginning) to mark all of Lawrence’s shifts as taken by Kit, and then just give it up when the guy got back━which wasn’t supposed to take so long.
Sometimes he wanted to be home, and sometimes he didn’t mind being at the bar. However, working so many days in a row had him aching to curl up in bed alone━something he didn’t get much of anymore. Alone-time. He couldn’t exactly smother a grown man, Kace was probably eager for his freedom, but Kit wasn’t sure what to do. Should he reach out to Kandace? Should he call their parents? Both… seemed like a shitty idea. Alright, scratch that. One thing at a time━let Kace get climatized to life again.
Apparently, Lawrence was supposed to show up today, too. Kit would believe that when he fucking saw it. God, he was gonna wring that fucker’s little neck (only ‘cause Kit knew he’d survive it). And, speak of the devil, waltzing in like he owned the place. They weren’t even open yet━Kit was busying himself behind the bar, ordering around his staff and setting up━and Lawrence wanted a fucking drink. Suddenly remembering the douchey English guy who’d almost killed him, Kit debated leaping over the bar and knocking the piss out of Lawrence. “You want me to fuckin’ wait on you now?” Kit growled, nearly snapped, turning to glare at Lawrence head-on.
“Where the hell were you, man? You can’t just take off without sayin’ when you’ll come back━that ain’t cool. Thought the older you get the more responsible you are?” Kit scoffed, dropping his hands to the bar and shaking his head. “I had to cover all your damn shifts, had those stupid━” Glancing left and right, he lowered his voice, “Bloodsuckers━wonderin’ why I was servin’ them drinks in their bar. What's wrong with you? Do you even want this job?” Was he allowed to fire people? He could probably give Hector a good enough reason for it, but Kit would be a complete hypocrite if he didn’t offer second chances.

The town was small enough for Lawrence to find Remzi’s brother. Apparently, they looked similar, prompting his mind back to when he first met Remzi, convinced he’d just see him upstairs with Phoebe, but he hadn’t crossed paths with that man again. He wasn’t going to ask Phoebe either because she’d probably tell him to not get involved. At least Remzi was a hundred miles away from Mystic Falls, causing mayhem somewhere else. Leaving Lawrence to return to normal. It wasn’t as if Lawrence had those normal working rights humans did. He didn’t sign some fancy contract about his working hours or what type of holidays he could have so when he asked Hector for paid time off he was faced with a solid no. It worked both ways though. He could have left town and never returned, but he found himself with too many connections now. It wasn’t like before where he could grab his bags and move onto the next place without having to consider anyone. Now he had Teddy and Phoebe. One day he’d have to leave though. There were only so many years you could go unnoticed until a neighbour commented about your youth. Then there were only so many years you could laugh off such a comment before it got weird. New Orleans was the expectation in all of that. A place where nobody seemed to give a shit about what was happening in the city, even down to the dead humans. Kit didn’t look pleased to see Lawrence as he took a seat at the bar. “Um, no? Keep your fur on wolf boy. I can get the drink myself” The fuck was wrong with him? He was pretty sure it wasn’t a full moon yet. It was too early in the day to be dealing with a testy werewolf. People had the nerve to say vampires were angry people, but wolves were full of rage. “I didn’t just take off. I told Hector I’d be gone for a few days cause I had something to sort out and it took longer than expected” He hadn’t sorted anything out either. Instead, he was left on the side of the road with a broken neck. He quickly raised his hands in defence, “In fairness, I didn’t think I’d be gone that long” Though he wasn’t really thinking when he went off with Remzi. “Should have given them a quick nip” There had been a few times Lawrence wondered whether it was Kit who bit him last year. He didn’t strike Lawrence as the type of wolf who chained himself up. “It’s not all vampires down there y’know” Majority yes, but they’d now open their doors to any immortal. Including silver things like Penny. “We sometimes get snakes in there” He said with a firm nod. KIT CLARKE

━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ YEAH, COULD GET THE drink himself my ass. Lawrence didn’t even make a move for it, either, so Kit let him stew there━fuckin’ asshole. He was tired from all those shifts, no matter how much money he was making. At some point, it just wasn’t worth it anymore, though he often tried to look at the bright side. “A few days.” Kit repeated, puffing out a breath. How often would he keep saying ‘a few days’ before he understood that it wasn’t just that? That Kit wouldn’t be so pissed if it’d just been a few days?
“Ya coulda called to update us.” Kit muttered, not taking Lawrence’s bullshit as his final answer. It was just irresponsible, but that’s what happened with vampires, he supposed. If you lived long enough, you started disregarding the rules.
‘Should have given them a quick nip.’
Alright, Kit grinned at that. Still didn’t pour Lawrence a drink, though, but he rumbled out a quiet chuckle. He’d thought about it on more than one occasion, though the vampires down there made him more uncomfortable than anything else. Like Lawrence, they were unwilling to follow rules unless they were set out by Hector himself, and they were so… lackadaisy with taking advantage of humans. Kit never thought of himself as taking advantage, plus, chicks never ended up dead after a night with him.
Snakes? Kit immediately furrowed his brow, moving to lean against the counter, arms folded. The only snakes he could think of were the ones he’d taken down with Katja what seemed like a lifetime ago, and he was pretty sure there hadn’t been any vetalas sneaking into the club.
“Vetalas? Since when have ya seen a vetala in Emerald City, man? Or even in Mystic Falls?” Kit scoffed, shaking his head. “They travel in packs and look like snakes, and they’re nasty as fuck. You sure that’s what ya saw?” He nearly bragged about taking down a few of them, but that would require revisiting a time that caused too much stress. In any case, he was pretty sure Lawrence was bullshitting him━or he was just incredibly confused.

His hand remained empty as he sat at the bar. Not whiskey quenching his hunger. Clearly Kit wasn’t going to get him a drink. “Look. I’ll cover whatever shifts you want up here for the next few weeks and I hate working up here just as much as you hate working downstairs.” Humans leaning over the bar, yelling their orders at him as if his hearing couldn’t pick up a pin dropping in the room. Plus the sound of racing hearts on the dancefloor was difficult to shut out. Immediately he frowned, looking at Kit, “I sent a message to Hannya to say I wouldn’t be back for a few days and she said…” He reached into his pocket, pulling his phone out as he searched through his messages, “No worries baby. I’ll be here when you get back. Kiss, kiss, kiss.” He placed his phone down on the bar, “I thought she’d pass the message on, but maybe that was naive of me.” Hannya didn’t give a shit whether Kit knew about Lawrence’s return date. He probably should have texted Kit himself, but he wasn’t going to respond with spicy pictures. At least his joke had Kit smiling, which meant all was forgiven in Lawrence’s world. Fuck, he still was grabbing Lawrence a drink though. He slid off his seat as Kit mentioned something about vetalas. He moved around the back of the bar, grabbing a bottle of whiskey from the top shelf. “Vetalas?” He returned to his seat, cracking open the bottle of whiskey before taking a sip. Penny was mean, but he wasn’t sure if she amounted to nasty. Nor did she travel in a pack. “Nah, this one was on her own. I met her a few months back. The bitch stole my ring.” He held up his naked hand, before letting it fall again, “She had weird silver scales on her face. Like… quite beautiful if I’m being honest.” The way they caught the lights in the bar that evening was mesmerizing, but it didn’t quell his anger though as he lost control of his anger for a split second. “Awful temper as well.” He offered the bottle to Kit. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ KIT STARTED TO SHAKE his head before Lawrence finished what he was saying. “Nah, I need to be in, ‘specially since the weather’s gonna get warmer and we’ll get busier.” Plus, he needed something to do. There were a certain number of hours a week he had to work as per his probation requirements, and shit always got… complicated if he was alone for too long. He craved it now, sure, but what happened when he got it? Quiet surroundings always made his mind unbearably loud.
“Still.” He grumbled. Hannya should’ve passed along the message, but, “That ain’t an actual update. We’re not around for whenever you wanna pop in and out. ‘A few more days’ ain’t concrete.” It wasn’t a date, which was what was required━y’know, for responsible employees. Clearly, Kit was wasting his breath. And getting a little squeamish every time he thought of Hannya with Lawrence. “Ain’t naive; it was just stupid.” He added with a small grin.
Kit turned to watch Lawrence with a raised brow as he walked around the bar, finally getting his own drink like he’d said he would. He took the good-quality stuff, maybe thinking Kit wouldn’t charge him for it, and then sat back down. Resuming their conversation about the ugly snake things, Kit settled back into his position over the edge of the bar.
The more Lawrence spoke, the more Kit realized he was just confused. A grin spread over his face, slowly but surely, at its broadest once Lawrence was finished sharing his story. Kit chuckled again, louder this time, thoroughly amused and letting all the previous annoyance wash away. “That ain’t a vetala or a snake, man,” Blue eyes ticked to the bottle that was offered, and Kit frowned, heavily debating it for a moment. He’d been trying to do better, really, and drinking at work wasn’t that. But… fuck it, it’d been a tough fucking week. And Kace was back now, so whatever. He wasn’t feeling so shitty anymore━or so he assumed he shouldn’t be. “That bitch is a dragon.”
Kit pulled out two glasses and set them between both men, using a clean rag to wipe the top of the bottle━and giving Lawrence a pointed look while doing so. He poured them two fingers worth as he explained, “Likin’ shiny shit, gorgeous, scales and batshit fuckin’ crazy? Gotta be.” Setting the bottle down, he took a swig of his glass before he continued. “Vetalas are usually dark and gross, like actual snake-lookin’. Dragons got that fire, right, so it only makes sense that they’ve got short fuses.” Like werewolves━but he didn’t add that. “I’ve got a dragon chick, too; she told me ‘bout them. ‘Bout all of you.” He said it as if he wasn’t one of them, “They’re usually old as fuck. Strong, kinda scary. They might look all dainty and fuckin’ cute, but I bet either of ‘em could rip both our heads off without breakin’ a nail. My advice would be not to go pissin’ her off. Get yourself a new ring and hope she doesn’t swipe that one, too.”

Lawrence almost let out a low groan as Kit mentioned it would be getting busier with the summer months drawing near, which meant there was a chance he could be roped into helping out upstairs. There was no way Hannya would be peeling herself away from downstairs so it would be left to Lincoln and Lawrence to fight over. Lincoln’s twitchy behaviour may have earned him a few weeks downstairs. “Well the offer’s there.” An offer he secretly hoped Kit wouldn’t take him up on. “Thanks for covering my shifts though.” While he was running across the country putting out fires caused by Remzi. He broke into a small smile, nodding in agreement. It was stupid of him to assume Hannya would pass the message on, but he was trying to avoid having to text Hector. The demon only liked playing manager when it suited her, i.e. bossing everyone around. Was he missing the point? He looked perplexed as Kit let out another laugh. He was almost certain that Penny was a snake of some description. “That bitch is a dragon.”Now it was Lawrence’s turn to let out a hearty laugh. “A dragon?” He repeated in disbelief. “As in those creatures that fly in the sky and breathe fire?” There was no way such things existed. He would have heard of them by now, surely? Then again he had no idea about demons until Hannya slipped around his neck. His parents didn’t tell him about every single thing that existed in the supernatural world as a kid. They were too busy trying to shield their children, forcing them into a life of a hermit. He watched Kit use a rag to clean the top of the bottle, making a point whilst doing so. He frowned slightly as Kit only poured them two fingers' worth. He preferred his glass to be full to the top. “You know it’s impossible for me to carry any type of illness or disease.” Whilst the humans were being knocked down by polio in the fifties he remained fit and well. “She certainly has a short fuse.” He’d witnessed Penny’s rage when he grabbed her in the bar, demanding she returns his ring. Small, cute but kinda scary. That described Penny in a nutshell. “Fuck.” He muttered, as he knocked back the two fingers' worth of whiskey. Hannya had him by one ball and now Penny had him by the other. Why was he so attractive to these types of ruthless women? He reached for the bottle, pouring himself another drink, stopping when it hit halfway. “How’d you kill them?” He knew he didn’t stand a chance against Penny, but he needed to know her weak spots. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ KIT HAD NEVER SEEN a full dragon━as in, one that looked like something out of a Disney movie━but he knew they could take their shape. He hadn’t believed Katja at first, unable to wrap his head around it. He could turn into a wolf, though, so what was so different about it? … Probably that wolves were real.
“Yup.” He nodded, grinning at seeing Lawrence’s disbelief. It was fun to drop that sort of shit on people, especially this guy━Kit kinda liked proving that, just because Lawrence was old, it didn’t mean he knew everything. In other words, vampires ain’t shit━but Kit was already aware of that.
“Me either. I just don’t want any stray blood gettin’ on the bottle, also it just… ain’t sanitary. Don’t be fuckin’ gross.” It just seemed wrong, like something his grandpa would’ve shouted at him for doing. He didn’t know why all these old fucks had their common decency removed more and more each decade.
Settling back on the edge of the bar, Kit sipped his drink, listening to Lawrence’s description and his slow descent into realization. From what he’d learned, dragons were pretty rare, and he would’ve said it was weird as fuck that two of ‘em were in this town, but this was Mystic Falls, and he’d learned to not expect anything less than fucking crazy. Maybe he’d tell Katja when he got home; she might wanna know about another dragon in town… did they like other dragons? He figured they weren’t pack animals… would be terrifying if they were.
Pushing away the thoughts of a herd of dragons flying through the air like Canadian geese, Kit raised his brows at Lawrence’s question. This felt wrong, like he was betraying Katja by answering, and the answer about who he favoured between them was incredibly obvious.
Kit sighed lightly as he watched Lawrence dump all the alcohol into his glass. Hector definitely wouldn’t like that, and though Kit wasn’t a stranger to working while intoxicated, he was trying to get better. He thought about Hazel, and about his niece, and it stopped him from grabbing the bottle and joining Lawrence. Instead, his fingers wrapped around its base to cover it and put it back on the shelf where it wouldn’t be tempting any longer. Coming back to the bar, and the rest of his drink, he’d left a long enough pause to think about what he was going to say.
“Don’t think ya can. I mean, do you really wanna try goin’ after a giant, mythical lizard who breathes fire and has impenetrable scales for armour?” Well, Kit wouldn’t say they were impenetrable, considering his night with Katja just a few hours ago.
Grinning at the memory, Kit raised the hand with his glass and motioned to the centre of his own neck, all around his Adam’s apple. “They’ve got a… soft spot ‘round here, though; I think it’s where their fire comes from. Probably the only way to hurt ‘em. Oh, and they hate phoenixes, apparently, which are also just as rare. So, uh, maybe try to find a phoenix.” Not at all serious, because Lawrence was fucked if he tried to kill this bitch, Kit chuckled into his cup before taking a long sip, nearing the bottom. He left the last of it for now, dragging it out. The burn in his throat wasn’t anything near what Katja could produce━he’d only ever felt it second-hand, but the heat against his lips and tongue was strong enough to make him grateful that her skin acted as a barrier. He couldn’t imagine what it felt like for her.
“So… what, you wanna kill this chick just ‘cause she stole your ring? Sounds kinda unfair, man. Think about all the people you’ve taken blood from, huh? Don’t it make sense to have a little give-n-take? Not even just with her, but… in general.” Kit was definitely selfish, but he’d never met more self-absorbed assholes than all the vampires he knew. He tolerated them, but man were they the worst.

He was struggling to comprehend that someone as small as Penny could transform into something huge like a dragon or maybe she was a tiny dragon. Either way, it was clear he had bitten off more than he could chew with her which was a common occurrence throughout his life. As soon as he arrived in New Orleans he was reminded that he would lose in a fight against a vampire twice his age. “Can they be old as fuck?” He was fairly certain Penny had a few centuries on him. No one was that miserable without decades of trauma and bad stuff happening to them. “Being a vampire ain’t that bad.” He retorted with a small smile. Catch him on a bad day and he would have been saying something different. He pictured Kit as someone who would dive off the deep end though and unable to control his urges, much like Remzi. He’d seen the wolf knocking back the alcohol as if he was trying to wash away something and those early days when he spotted Kit leaving the staff bathroom with a runny nose. Lawrence’s gaze followed Kit as he put the bottle back on the shelf. It didn't matter as there were shelves full of alcohol downstairs where he wouldn’t be monitored by Hector’s second pair of eyes. He just didn’t care as much about the job compared to Kit, knowing if anything happened he could head back to New Orleans to find work. Although now he had Teddy and Phoebe to consider before fleeing the town. Heading for a soft spot in the centre of her neck didn’t seem completely undoable. “She’s not always covered in scales and breathing fire.” He would have needed to get to her when she was vulnerable but he doubted Penny ever lowered her defences even just for a second. Lawrence finished off the rest of his drink, glaring at Kit as he did so. “It was my wedding ring. It has sentimental value and…” He’d already explained this to Penny; she clearly didn’t give a shit so Kit probably didn’t either. “I don’t know what me drinking from humans has to do with my ring.” He set the glass down on the bar, pausing briefly, “Also we need it to survive just like you need potatoes and water to keep things ticking over.” Of course Kit had managed to steer the conversation towards his dislike of vampires. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ “YEAH, MAN, ‘COURSE THEY CAN. LIKE I SAID, they're rare as shit, and so any dragon you meet’s probably older than you an’ Hector combined. They don’t gotta be, though.” Kit knew Katja was about his age, not nearly as old as she could get━like as old as her mom. She’d outlive him, though, and the thought… well, he’d always wanted to die sooner rather than later, but that was before he had his brother back. He also thought, briefly, about helping her repopulate the dragon race, and then Kit started to feel really sick.
Raising his glass to finally polish off the last of it━he really needed it now━Kit tipped it in Lawrence’s direction before downing the liquid. It sat back on the bar, Kit’s fingers idly spinning the glass. He chuckled because Lawrence had a point, but Kit was a little worried he was still doing Katja (or maybe her species) a disservice. “Don’t fuck around with that shit too much, man… gotta respect the endangered species list.” Kit joked lamely, blue eyes slithering up to watch Lawrence get all weird about his ring.
A wedding ring? Shit, who would marry this scrawny, pale bastard? Maybe he was a bit more desirable a hundred years ago or… however old he was. Kit raised his brows, listening to Lawrence’s little rant about potatoes before shrugging. “Dunno, man, jus’ sayin’ there’s consequences to what we are. Wouldn’t it be cheatin’ if I had a ring that made me not shift on a full moon?” The blood part was fucked up, but Lawrence was right, there was no way around it. The daylight ring, however? That wasn’t a necessity━Lawrence was doing just fine without it.
Leaning away from the bar, Kit took his glass to the dirty dish tray and set it upside down, stealing a glance at the clock as he did. By the time he made it back to Lawrence, he was already talking, “Alright, man, pack it up an’ get goin’. We’re gonna open soon, and I still got shit to prep.” Not entirely; he just wanted to stop talking to the stupid bloodsucker. Kit got his wish, though, and cut lime wedges in peace until the doors opened.
