Chase eyes Mikey’s bedroom door – closed despite it being mid-afternoon – and wondered if he should drag him along to Roxxi’s place. There’d been a time, before the Agnellis, before all the lies and the gang shit, where the two of them would go along with their dad on jobs. Handed hammers, set to work, even if it was just to drive nails into scraps of wood to keep them busy and out from underfoot. Not like the days he spent with him after Mikey had ended up in an eight by six cell when they’d been desperate to stop him from going out there after the Agnellis. His dad had been determined to wear him out then, knowing if he was asleep before they even got home in the van he wasn’t gonna go out looking for some sort of retribution for a brother they’d already washed their hands of.
Nah, shit. Bad memories and Mikey needed to do more with this freedom than sit around watching his brother empty out a blocked u-bend. He needed to get out, get rid of some of that prison pallor and find a life here.
Hitching the tool belt up on his shoulder, Chase hefted the tool kit in its shiny little red metal box in the other and headed out the door. Mikey had spent long enough being walled off from what was going on with his family but after all that had happened with Nemo – the squirrely son of a bitch – he’d been trying to keep them all safe by boxing them up in his life. Work. Family. Woman who’d abandoned some fancy restaurant with him to sprawl in a booth in real date night clothing to put away her weight in burgers. Each one protected from the nastier side of his life without having to raise a weapon.
Yet. That mocking little voice followed him all the way to the car.
You started opening doors up on your life and stuff you’d rather keep hidden was always gonna come creeping out. It was the cost of carrying a badge, one he hadn’t had to worry about when Mikey was behind bars, somewhat protected by the Agnelli scum, and he was living the life of a real dedicated monk.
Cranking the music on the way over there, Chase pushed it out of his head. Nemo might’ve been shivering in fear as he cowered under a rock somewhere but the rest of Emiliano’s brood were a thousand miles away. Mikey was free of them finally, safe, and vow of chastity had slowly started eroding. If things carried on the way they were – and the way the tune blasting out of the radio suggested – life was gonna be beautiful. No more blood, no more beatings, just the chance of some white picket fence at some point and little kids with dark eyes and mischief filled grins hanging off of their uncle in the yard.
Mikey, and definitely Roxxi, would’ve told him he was getting ahead of himself, but after years of feeling like he was living on a knife edge, the blade held by the Agnellis, just waiting to slip, it felt good to feel like he was on solid ground again.
The building wasn’t that different to his own as he pulled up outside it. Mystic Falls definitely seemed to have a mould, the old preserved, cause God help ‘em someone put up some glass monstrosity of a skyscraper right on the square. Solid brick walls, no sound bleeding through, big windows, lots of light. Slightly shitty landlords who wouldn’t handle problem pipes. Chase retrieved the belt and box from the passenger seat and caught the door as someone else headed out, returning the neighbour’s smile with one of their own. The elderly woman called after him as he headed in. ”I’ve got some jobs around the apartment if you’re looking for work,” she said sweetly. He dipped his chin, smiled coyly at her. ”It’s not my day job, ma’am, but maybe sometime…” The elevator doors went to slide shut then, leaving him scooting inside with ‘such a nice young man’ drifting quietly after him. At the rate he was going he’d be rooting under the sinks of half the people in the building.
Up on Roxxi’s floor he rapped knuckles against her door, leaning against the wall beside it to offer up a beaming smile to the spy hole – a wise move for a single woman even in a town like this – when he thought she was approaching. ”Your local Mr Fix It’s here to take care of your pipes,” he rasped. A little shiver went through him. He was glad he hadn’t offered that to the old lady downstairs, she might’ve been a little too keen to take up his offer then.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ LANCIANDO CAUTELA AL VENTO━or just being a dumbass. Calling it something different didn’t change what it was. In any case, Roxxi was slipping into this comfortably━too comfortably. Practically fucking comatose to the danger every time she brought him lunch or curled up next to him in bed, seeking nothing but warmth and a few hours of snuggles.
But this pity party was heard a little too fucking often; it was worn out by now.
Other than all that, she was happy Chase was coming over. Like her mother, she cleaned until her fingers practically bled and started cooking a real Italian dinner. She hadn’t promised it on the day he was coming to look at her sink, but it was Saturday, and she had nothing to do all day until Chase came over. Now she’d have someone and something to do.
And while Roxxi had done everything else imaginable to impress him, she was still wearing an old t-shirt and pyjama shorts, too warm to put anything else on━at least she’d showered (not that it would do anything for the sweat produced from slaving over this meal).
It was a little weird planning a meal for them from recipes her mother taught her, like feeding an egg to a chicken, but she pushed that thought away as quickly as it came. She wasn’t one of them anymore; she had nothing to do with that. It was dishonest, sure, but that was the whole point of cutting herself off from them━Roxxi wouldn’t be involved in their shit anymore. Maybe Chase would see that, too.
For now, though, she’d keep her mouth shut against her better judgement and Jo’s advice. No use ruining a good thing.
She heard his heartbeat and his steps before his knuckles were on her door. Roxxi padded over, grinning as soon as she heard Chase’s voice, only worried for a moment that it might’ve been someone else. Glancing in the spy hole just to steal a look at his face, she pulled open the door, beaming at him. “You could’ve just come in, you know,” Drawling out the invitation like it wasn’t another step, she slipped her hands up to his cheeks and pulled him in for a friendly greeting via mouth. “Oh Dio, you look so sexy like that, tools and everything. Surprised you didn’t get mauled on your way over here.” He would now. Her hands slid down his chest for a healthy feel before she was taking a few slow steps back, stretching his shirt with her until she let it go. “My pipes need some good tender loving care, baby,” Roxxi purred, trilling her tongue on the roof of her mouth before turning around.
It was only a few short steps into the apartment before hitting the small wooden table with her kitchen set up in an L-shape behind it. The oven was going, stove, too, but Roxxi lingered by the table for a moment, picking up a black olive. She had small dishes of olives and different kinds of nuts, and a little charcuterie-reminiscent plate with slices of salami, mortadella, prosciutto, pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano. “We’re not supposed to eat dinner until after seven-thirty, but I figured we could have some lunch, too. Then spend most of the time… grazing.” Going back and forth from the food to each other, hopefully. “You know, after you fix my sink.” Making quick work of the olive, Roxxi peeled the pit from her mouth and tossed it in a separate dish set out for that reason alone.
Turning away from Chase again, she pulled open the cupboard under the sink and pointed at it, the whole thing looking unbelievably sad with a pot under it, already half-full of leaky water since the last time she emptied it. “Incapace.” She muttered. Normally, Roxxi was pretty strict about using her native tongue around Chase, but cooking all these old dishes really put her in the mood━both kinds, Italian and otherwise. His presence handled the second bit almost exclusively. Facing Chase once more, Roxxi raised her brows, already smirking devilishly, “You’re going to take your shirt off before you start, right? I’ll only provide payment if I get half-naked labour.”

The apartment was clean. Those Sunday mornings spent tossing cushions back on the couch – he wasn’t deep enough into bachelor territory that he hadn’t spent a little of his patrol office pay on throw pillows and drapes – making sure the sink was entirely emptied, not cherry picked for what was needed, the vacuum run around the place often enough that they weren’t choking on dust bunnies. No dirty laundry left in heaps on the bedroom floor, no scum gathering in the bathroom sink.
No scent of home cooking wafting over him when he got home from a shift. No woman greeting him in a t-shirt worn thin enough that it draped like some Greek Goddess’ toga. No real heart.
Chase got hit with the holy trinity as Roxxi opened the door and beamed at him. All warm and damp from the cooking, hair curling in that way women’s did when the humidity got to it and left you wanting to tug on those little curls and let them spring up around your fingers. He gave in to it, palm coming up to settle warm at the back of her neck as she palmed his face to kiss him. The sort of warm welcome that would’ve led into one of those cheesy porn videos that teenagers had always been passing back and forth. The handyman turning up at the door to find a bored, lonely, totally freaking hot housewife looking for a little tending too. ”Walk in without knocking? I think my guys call that breaking and entering.” Chase played innocent, like his ma wouldn’t have given him hell for doing it. You kept your manners, especially when everything put that pinch of worry on her face after Mikey had gone.
If it hadn’t been for Roxxi’s overly friendly neighbour he would’ve been buzzing her from downstairs anyway. Sliding his hand down to the small of Roxxi’s back, Chase shrugged, a little smug pulling at his lips as they parted from hers. ”One of your neighbours half tried. I think she booked me in for next weekend. No pipe cleaning but …” He winced apologetically, like a five foot nothing old woman with concrete permed grey curls and soup chicken skin had stolen him away. Chin dipped, regarding those fingers plucking at his shirt to draw him in, Chase grinned slowly. ”Which set d’you want taken care of first?” he asked, his voice rasping out rough. If she was anything like his ma there’d be slapped hands to keep everything on schedule with dinner. God forbid the chicken burn or the potatoes turn out like bullets.
There were little dishes on the table, pretty little things his ma would’ve liked. If it had been his place the olives still would’ve been in the plastic tub from the grocery store, same with the salami and the cheese, if he’d even managed to get that fancy. Chips, dip, left over take out warmed up if you were lucky. There was that glint of mischief in Chase’s eyes as he watched the way the olive slipped into Roxxi’s mouth and out again. He imagined her lips would carry that hint of brininess now. ”Priorities first huh?” he asked, that thread of humour to his voice. ”You’ve really got it all set up. Guess we both prepared.” He hitched the tool box, shrugged the shoulder with the belt on it. Both of them making a complex task look easy maybe, although he was way more impressed with everything she’d done.
Setting the tool box down next to the sink Chase hummed, the way his old man always had done when he was looking at a problem – dark eyes squinting, that faint repetitive cluck of his tongue, the canny way his lips would curl when he realised he could justifiably up the price. ”Sounds like a pretty unbalanced deal to me.” Those dark eyes slid over, up, running over the line of lean muscle up to the bottom of those pyjama shorts and then higher. The curl of his lips became a full on grin. Chase’s tongue slicked his lower lip and then he was chuckling, nodding. ”I guess not so unbalanced after all. Not gonna ask if you’re gonna take your shirt off. Might get a little painful.” Mock grumbling, Chase peeled off the plaid shirt he’d thrown over the old t-shirt he was fully prepared to toss if he got rank pipe guts all over him when he got the u-bend free. He tossed it over the back of a chair, paused with his fingers curled into the hem of the t-shirt. ”Am I gonna get a coffee starter here?” Tit for tat, one added amendment in the deal leading to another.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ PRIORITIES, YES, BECAUSE SHE was tired of using a good pot (like her Nonna would’ve said, though it was average kitchenware) to fill drain water with. That was where she needed a man to come in, and thankfully Chase was━apart from the comic book shit━a real man’s man. A career in which he used his brain and got his hands dirty, the skills to fix things around her home, and the look of a boxer━for all those, she figured she could forgive the geeky-ness.
After opening the bottom cupboard to reveal her problem, Roxxi stepped back and swiftly grabbed a piece of cheese from the table, gnawing on her snack while she waited for the help to undress. He was being a tease, though, complaining for some odd reason or another. Ah, he wanted her to strip, too, even though it was completely different and she’d cooked all this food for him. Men. Well, she had said that’s what drew her to him, didn’t she?
Just as his useless overshirt hit the back of the chair, Roxxi held the cheese between her lips and lifted off her own, tossing it atop his. Grabbing the pecorino slice to free her mouth, both hands went to her hips, staring expectantly at him. “Coffee, t**s and the seven-course meal I’ve been slaving over all morning? You really are impossible to please.” Grumbling in Italian, Roxxi turned to start up the coffee maker, flashing him a sideways grin. “Get your shirt off and that tool belt on, Buckley.” Roxxi ordered, stretching over the counter to pull two mugs out of the top cupboard in the corner after popping the rest of the cheese in her mouth.
Once it was poured, with Chase’s just the way he liked it━it was sad that she knew that now, wasn’t it?━Roxxi couldn’t even make the short distance (about three steps or so) back to him without getting distracted. She practically dropped their mugs on the counter, beside his toolbox━somehow managing to not spill anything━and latched onto Chase’s shoulders. His chest was warm against hers (though she was like a personal sauna at most times)━comforting and inviting. Roxxi curled one arm over his back while the other hand drifted up to the side of his head, thumb tracing down the shell of his ear as she kissed him. Hard at first, passionate but not exactly meaningful, while trying to pull him towards the table.
“Alright,” She hummed against his lips after a moment, patting the side of his head as if Chase was the one that needed to calm down. “Let’s not get distracted,” Roxxi slipped her hand down that sharp jaw, pressing her thumb to his chin to open his mouth. Her tongue slipped between, the tip of it grazing along the bone that drew the dividing line of his upper jaw. It came out and over the middle of his top lip, practically claiming him like an animal would. Roxxi nipped at his lip before finally tipping her head back, a little breathless but with a broad grin, staring into those pretty charcoal eyes.
“Bet my neighbour wouldn’t be this friendly though, huh?” And if she would be, whoever she was, Roxxi had no reservations about setting her straight.
Humming softly, and preoccupied again, Roxxi mumbled, “Mi ecciti così tanto.” Her head dipped down, licking a broad stripe over one collarbone and along the base of his neck, eagerly embracing Chase even before he got all sweaty.

Had the request been floating around in Roxxi’s head while she’d been cutting things up and arranging them in their little dishes? Scales tipping back and forth in her head, counting up who was gonna owe who what for this. A plate, of what he was sure was gonna be some stellar pasta, more than enough payment for the U-bend, the nuts and salami, now they were gonna cost him extra, even if he did just steal every bite of them from those fingers that were plucking through the bowls while he considered if he was ready to pay them. This was how guys got in trouble, the back and forth on who owed who until suddenly you realised someone you literally owed your shirt. Chase gave a little huff through his nose, his lips tipping up for a second as his eyes grew sly for a second. Least it wasn’t someone so bad to owe his shirt to.
His skin didn’t pebble with goose flesh as that inch of tan skin appeared beneath the hem of his t-shirt and the waistband of his jeans at least. He stood his ground, eyeing Roxxi steadily in challenge until, without an inch of damn hesitation she peeled her t-shirt off, leaving just those pyjama shorts hanging on her hips and his mouth hanging open. Chase thought he huffed again but, fuck, it was more pant than puff. He swallowed hard, his laugh rolling out low and dirtier than any joint on Bourbon Street. ”I had to get something out of the bargain other than the five extra pounds I’m gonna be carryin’ when you roll me outta here,” he crooned. Chase peeled his t-shirt off slowly, still lazily eyeing her as she started work on his coffee. When he left – once all the pipes in the place had been tended to.
He tossed his shirt aside, reached for an olive and had it between his teeth just as Roxxi stretched up over the counter and almost inhaled it as he sucked in his breath. Chase convulsively huffed a breath out and had it rolling back into his mouth. He crushed it between his teeth, grinning around it like he hadn’t come close to choking himself at the sight of a goddess right there preparing him coffee. ”Yes ma’am,” he managed roughly. The stone appeared, gripped between his front teeth as he slipped the belt around his waist. It hung low around his hips, drooping low enough to almost pull his jeans with it.
Hand on the belt, eyes flicking between the steamiest brewing he’d ever seen and the sink situation, Chase dipped down for a moment, checking the tightness of the nuts on the pipe – both tight enough that nothing should’ve been leaking. He plucked some kitchen towel from the counter top, wrapping it around the joints and turning on the faucet to run for a moment while he leaned back against the counter. Roxxi slid in, coffee set aside without any burns sustained. All warm skin, heating up further as she wrapped her arms around him. ”Careful with my coffee,” he warned lightly. ”Wouldn’t wanna be wasting the kisses all of this is getting on burns.” It wasn’t the bare line of her torso his lips ended up pressed to though. She kissed him hard instead, lips salty with the cheese she’d nibbled on, hands greedy as she pulled him towards the table.
Dark eyes flickered open to narrow dark slits, something sly in the grin that was half stifled against her mouth. Chase clucked his tongue against the roof of his mouth, his hand a chiding pat against her hip that stilled and pressed as Roxxi began to work his mouth open. ”Us huh? I’d say I was pretty focused til…” Til his voice trailed off entirely as Roxxi was licking her way in and out of his mouth and over his top lip cutting off all logical thought. Maybe in both of them. His head dipped a little, maintaining the distance between theirs as he tried to catch his breath. Dinner was gonna be a cold banquet eaten in bed at this rate.
Chase hummed low, hands flexing on Roxxi’s flannel covered hips as he considered boosting her up on the table. The nuts would scatter all over the floor like marbles but they could just clean up later right? ”I dunno, she seemed pretty racy to me. A total flirt. She didn’t have these though … hers were a little scrawny.” He trailed his hand down her hip, fingertips finding the groove between the muscles of her outer thigh, a teasing mapping of where he was gonna explore later. Onyx eyes peered between the twin fans of long, equally dark lashes, dropping to that quick and talented mouth. ”What does that mean? You dirty talkin’ me Professor?” He clucked his tongue again, nuzzling his face into those dark curls he wanted wrapped around his fingers – shit the sink. Grumbling, Chase did as he’d half planned, boosting Roxxi up onto the table and breaking away just long enough to flip the faucet off and avoid that pot under the sink spilling over like his libido was gonna at any moment.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ “JUST FIVE? IF YOU leave here only five pounds heavier, I haven’t done my job.” Roxxi snickered, glancing over just in time to catch that glorious frame being put on display. She couldn’t help herself after that, honestly. She was just a woman; how could she maintain control after seeing a muscular man shirtless and wearing a toolbelt? A man she’d been depriving herself of at that, because the no-sex rule wasn’t only for his torture.
He was right about burns, though. Poor guy would be scalded, and Roxxi would have to somehow explain how her bare chest magically healed while she was rubbing him down with aloe. Actually, perhaps an “accidental” spill wouldn’t be the worst idea…
Nah, she was getting as much attention as she wanted now. Those big, rough hands on her hips━though, they could’ve been skimming up her body and she would’ve been happier━and the shuffle to the table. Maybe she’d have to let her rule slip a bit… he was so… ugh, and tasting him had Roxxi forgetting every reason she’d been holding back. The edge of the table pressing into her ass reminded her that it’d be a couple little moves, and they’d be set.
Even talking about her neighbour couldn’t work Roxxi’s brain out of it. She was beginning to think this suspicious character wasn’t even real, but she wasn’t pinned between Chase and her kitchen table, so Roxxi was the real winner here. Happily drowning in her hunky manly-man, licking and touching wherever she wanted. The Italian drifted from her mouth without a second (or even first) thought, somewhat wishing he had a translator gadget stuck in his ear at all times. Maybe it was hot because he didn’t know what she was saying. Her breath moved down his skin, ready to catch her tongue or her teeth on his━
Very suddenly, Roxxi was ripped from her mission down his chest and dropped onto the table. The man-handling would’ve been fine if he’d stayed, but instead, Chase was breaking away and running to her sink as that soaked bit of fabric looked like it would give up at any moment. Her pot, though? That thing was solid.
Finally coming back to life, she sucked in a breath to cleanse herself of all… that, and grinned, fingers wrapping around the edge of the table. Roxxi leaned forward slightly, intrigued, and finally answered his question. “It means ‘you’re going to flood my house, dumbass.’” Snickering, she glanced over her shoulder at the little tray they’d narrowly managed to avoid completely destroying. A few nuts had gone astray, and one olive—until she picked it off the table and popped it into her mouth.
Slipping off the table, Roxxi left the olive pit behind and moved to Chase. She grabbed his hips when she got to him, bending over to start at the base of his spine, dragging her tongue over each vertebrae on the way up. Once she reached the back of his neck, Roxxi pressed her bare skin to his, arms wrapping around his waist like she wasn’t being a total distraction—again. Raising onto her toes and bringing her lips to the shell of his ear, she finally translated in a husky whisper, “I said, you turn me on.” Once more, she repeated the sentence in Italian after its English counterpart, then nipped the cartilage of his ear. She settled her cheek to his shoulder for a moment, just enjoying the feel of his muscles beneath her fingers and the scent of him mixed with her home.
“I thought you knew what you were doing?” Roxxi teased as she broke away, giving him another squeeze around the waist before she did. Returning to the stove━where her water finally began to boil━Roxxi popped in the spaghetti and started on the quick pasta dish.
After a few minutes, she pulled two low bowls from her cupboard and began setting out enough for each of them. “Apertivo is olives and nuts. Antipasti is the meat and cheese,” Roxxi nodded over her shoulder at the table, “They’re not supposed to go out together, but I won’t tell if you won’t.” She winked, attention going back to the pasta. “Primi, first dish, we’re having cacio e pepe. Which is just pasta, Pecorino-Romano, Parmesan, pepper and butter. It’s good, though,” Once enough of it filled their bowls━equal heaps for both, because if Roxxi had learned anything, it was that she ate as much as a full-grown man━she wandered over to Chase with only one.
“First break. Or… second?” It’d only been a brief distraction, but still. She wrapped a bit of pasta around the fork and pulled it from the bowl, cupping her hand beneath to catch anything that might fall. The journey from the bowl to Chase’s mouth was made without mess, ending in Roxxi slipping (shoving without permission) the fork past his lips and then shooting him an expectant look.

If she kept it up with that side of their bargain here and the meals she brought by the station for their lunches, he was gonna end up more than five pounds heavier. He’d seen it when guys had gotten hitched in the neighbourhood, quick meals picked up on the way home from work and drunk off at the local bars giving way to those home comforts, dinner cooked for them every night, couples eventually becoming families and those guts that had been lean, skinny, a couple years before were suddenly bulging out over belts as those guys went soft. Chase had seen his old man’s getting there, that softness that left him hitching his pants up to under that shelf on the job … until Mikey had been sentenced. Everything had boiled down, boiled away then, grief did to you. That was in the past now though, Mikey was back and hell, maybe it was time they got a touch of the soft.
Chase smirked as he glanced over at the table, teeth nipping at his lower lip near the corner. Soft after all that, and the chef wouldn’t be so bad, even if it meant the next time he was back here, fixing a pipe or hanging a picture, those love handles mighta sprouted. Hers were … perfect, a full curve under his hands, no sign that eating her own cooking on a daily basis – or what they had going on – was packing five extra pounds on. His fingers flexed on them, her mouth working on him … his just plain working to get her worked up with talk of her neighbour. He woulda said he wasn’t doing a bad job of it, not when the Italian started spilling out. It was hot as the steam rising off the pans on the stove, working its way under his skin until it was ready to steam out of his ears. Five seconds more and it might’ve done but this thing of theirs … that was fucking cursed.
First the comic book store and her job pulling her away, then a dozen more tiny little things, each time they took a micro-step forward but it had been just that, like they were dancing around the edges of it, getting a toe closer with each new tune but then they were spinning away, that need left burning in the pit of his stomach. This time he’d been the one to cause it, the fucking sink that he’d turned on about to spill over.
He cursed as he boosted Roxxi up onto the table and broke away, wanting to avoid flooding the kitchen for the sake of his burning libido. Teeth caught around his tongue, Chase flipped off the faucet, bent to study the pipe. Wet at the joint, like he’d thought it would be. Either something had blocked it at that point, or more likely the seal had just gone. An easy fix, not worth anywhere near as much as the dinner and … her. Looking back, he looked sheepish at least, rubbing his knuckles under his bottom lip. ”Nah,” he rumbled on a chuckle. ”That wasn’t a swipe about the sink. That was … hot, sexy.” A slap on the wrist sure as hell wasn’t that and he wasn’t about to take tone over feel.
Dark eyes dipped to where she plucked up the olive, the muscles in his jaw twitching as he watched it pop past her lips. Now he knew what was wrong with the sink they could … shit. Chase grumbled low in his throat as he heard her slip down from the table. ”I was gonna say stay put…” he grouched, but Roxxi wasn’t heading back to the stove. She was pressing in close behind him, dragging her – jesus. He paused, hands curled over the edge of the sink as he started to straighten, her arms going around his waist and that steamy heat drifting rapidly south again. Roxxi’s lips were against his ear, those words spoken in that same tone. ”I knew it,” he said smugly, letting out a small sound as it rolled out in Italian to be punctuated with a nip of her teeth. Swallowing hard, he reached back, settling his hand warm against her hip against as he laughed. ”Keep questioning me and I might just drag this out. A seal’s come loose, left the pipe dripping. I think I know how it feels.” The heat reflected in his eyes as he turned himself, suddenly bereft of that heat against his back.
Watching her with one hand still propped, he grumbled under his breath, shaking his head. She really was gonna be the death of him. The sink could wait til later, the fix probably likely to take him all of ten minutes as he rewrapped the pipe and screwed a new fixing in place. His pipes, however, they were in danger if Roxxi kept up. Get it over with, man. The warning to himself pinballed around in his head. Chase dropped to his knees, working the fixings loose to pop the U-bend off. He set it in the pot, squinting into it just long enough to see it was pretty much clean as a whistle. ”You’re talkin’ dirty again,” he sing-songed, watching her setting out the pasta. The menu was reeled off in a way that was a hundred times easier to understand than the one at the restaurant. ”This makes my ma’s stuff like a beginner’s.” He was being spoiled, oh he knew that.
The pan caught the dribble of water as he stood again to wash his hands off. Before he had them half dry, Roxxi was there, pasta winding around the fork, lifted to his mouth. Chase held his hands out, keeping them off of her as he plucked the pasta from the fork with his teeth and tongue. The salt and the bite of the cheese and pepper filled his mouth before that creaminess washed in. Mmm. The sound was more a groan than actual words. Chase licked the sauce from his lip, nodding. ”Damn good, my ma’s a rank amateur.” She’d have swatted him at that but sorry ma, gotta talk the truth. Eyes narrowing, Chase shook off his hands and finally settled them at her waist. ”For?” His voice was a low drawl, another rumble in his chest. He had an idea but this was the dance and he wasn’t about to leap a step ahead without drawing her with him.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ “WELL, WE CAN’T LEAVE your pipe dripping now, can we?” She didn’t want to. Roxxi wanted on him now, she felt a little feral when she thought about it━he was the only thing she was thinking about right now━but the food had to be cooked. That’s all they were waiting on. The actual pipe and the food. She couldn’t just leave the slow cooker to burn the meat.
Ah, pipes and meat. What a fiasco.
‘You’re talkin’ dirty again,’
The edge of her full lips ticked up in a grin, ready to list off the rest of the menu once he’d tasted the primi. She liked sharing this piece of herself with Chase, even if it was coated in an outer layer of desire━maybe even more so because of that. It made it something that was their own, no longer tainted by thoughts of her family. She could teach Chase bits of her language, stuff him full of food, and it would lighten the injustices that brought them together… at least in her fantasy world.
Roxxi waited patiently for his reaction after feeding Chase a forkful, beaming when she got her praise. It didn’t stop her from raising a hand and lightly bopping him on the side of the head, though. “Don’t talk about your mamma like that,” She hissed, but then tipped her chin up and turned the grin up a few notches brighter. “But thank you, grazie,” With a sharp nod, Roxxi curled another bit of pasta around her fork and stuffed her mouth full, enjoying the familiarity━at least she’d picked up one of her mom’s positive traits.
“For food.” Roxxi stated obviously, sound clambering out around all the pasta, though her grin was mischievous. Another fork twist and she was back to feeding Chase from what’d become their communal bowl. “Ah… later, secondi is allesso di bollito. Slow-cooked beef on fresh, crispy buns. There used to be a little shop near home; we lived right outside Città del Vaticano━ah, Vatican City━so there were a lot of tourists. Not unlike Bourbon Street at night.” She smiled, knowing he’d understand as well as she did, “Anyway, they were famous for this sandwich. It was always easier to get in the cooler months with fewer tourists,” Without taking another forkful for herself, Roxxi set the bowl on the counter and hummed contently, slipping her arms around Chase’s shoulders and moving closer.
“Contorni is ‘side dishes,’ we’ll have artichokes.” Her voice was low now, a soft hum to punctuate the words as if she really was dirty-talking. “Formaggi e frutta is next; fruit and cheese only. Caprino cheese and figs, with mozzarella and grilled peaches.” She swayed on him gently, and then slid up to Chase’s ear, whispering the dessert to him. “Dolce will be tartufo. Two different gelato flavours, then the balls are rolled in chocolate powder. And when you split them open, the melted chocolate oozes out and into your mouth,” With a sigh, Roxxi closed her lips on his earlobe, pulling gently. She lingered for a moment before tipping her head back far enough to grin lazily up at him. “And limoncello for digestivo, which is the last. It’ll be chilled, you know, good for after all that warmth.” She purred, lifting onto her toes to press their lips together.
Dio, screw the fucking food. If they stayed in the kitchen, she could still make sure nothing burned.
Roxxi kissed her way over his chin and down the centre of his neck, mumbling, “Keep the belt on,” as she went lower, sinking to the floor to take care of that leaky pipe.

It was instant, a gulping swallow and a hoarse choir boy voice. ”No ma’am.” If he had still been seventeen and squirming on the couch, sat between his prom date’s mom and dad while he waited for her to come downstairs, he’d have been dripping with sweat – the fearful kind, not the sort that was gonna bead his skin even without all the steam in the air from the pasta Roxxi had been cooking when he’d arrived. Chase huffed out a rough breath, his throat feeling desert dry despite that. Maybe he should’ve taken a moment to dip his head under the faucet once he’d figured out what was wrong with it. Cool off, make sure he didn’t blow before the main course was even on the table.
Roxxi had already been slipping him little treats since he walked in the door. Appetisers, as though his appetite really needed that much help when she was around. His taste buds and other parts of him were already sparking up as Chase dropped to his knees to start taking the pipe apart – the sooner he got the work over and done with, the sooner they started working their way through the menu, which was gonna be rounded out with the woman herself. Fingers dipped into the belt he wore as he set the pipe aside, trying to dig out something to work the corroded tape loose from around the pipe with.
When Roxxi got close again, he abandoned it. They weren’t really gonna be using the sink until after all of this anyway. His hands were clean, for now, his mouth … occupied, ravished by whatever she’d put together in a pan. Dinner as a kid had always just been dinner, no real room for anything fancy when both his parents were working their ass off to try and give one of their boys a good start. They taught him manners enough that he should’ve known better than to bring his mama into it. Roxxi bopped him, leaving him pouting for a second before he grumbled and grinned, like he’d been caught mushing down his peas and hiding them beneath what was left of his potatoes. ”I’m not bad mouthin’ her,” Chase promised her. ”Just sayin’, you got her beat by miles. Although, you ever try her meatloaf, you might just cry a little.” His grin grew in an echo to hers, his tongue tracing his upper lip as she tasted a mouthful for herself.
That edge of heat boiled up into it as Roxxi answered his question. ”Mm-hmm,” Chase rumbled lightly. He watched every subtle shift of her mouth as she started to reel off the menu again. It was like the menu back at the restaurant they’d tried, things he didn’t understand until they were explained, that little pang in the pit of his stomach as he pictured her running through the streets of Rome, probably out later than she should’ve been, charming shop owners into one of those buns. ”And you made them for me? They sound incredible.” Like the woman who’d made them.
She set the bowl aside, bellied up to him again. Chase mock narrowed his eyes at the mention of artichokes, then cheese and figs, peaches in something that sounded like it was savoury, no pie there, although … oh baby … there was ice cream, he knew that much. Dolce, sweet, like that mouth that had him shivering. ”Sounds like an aphrodisiac,” he croaked. Chase’s fingers flexed on her waist, palms scraping over her bare skin as they headed for the small of her back. ”And you’re getting me drunk. I definitely think we’re gonna need something to cool down later. You’re getting’ everythin’ steamy.” Especially him. His hand slid up the dip of her spine as she kissed him, his fingertips dipping under the screen of dark hair to settle at the nape of her neck as Roxxi kissed him.
It looked like they were gonna be eating everything cold, whether it was meant to be that way or not. He let out a shuddery breath as she dragged her mouth down his neck. Chase’s head tipped back, his eyes slamming shut as Roxxi sank lower. His lips curved, his hand settling on top of her head. ”Yes ma’am,” he purred, more a velvety rumble this time. He’d put all the tools at his disposal to use before the night was out.
