At least it was the middle of the afternoon and not the middle of the night. It was a cold comfort as Clea edged her way along the nest of alleyways that ran along the backs of the buildings that faced onto the square. In an hour or so the sun would be low enough in the sky that the pools of shadows that were restricted to just the corners behind the dumpsters would come creeping out, swallowing almost the whole cramped space in darkness. By then she planned to be well out of here, sitting at the bar at Campbell’s, either celebrating what she’d managed to foil or trying to boil the nightmare of it out of her head with the biggest drink she could convince Olivia to pour.
That morning had been cold, the bitter air nipping at her fingers as she’d rushed from her car to the front door of the Grill to open up. By the time she’d battled her way through the breakfast and lunch rushes the air had warmed a little, the sun chasing away the clouds and the most of the memories of last night’s dream. Not all of it though and she had still felt the bite of that as she’d left work ten minutes ago.
Clea had stood at the mouth of the alleyway a couple of doors down from the Grill, feeling that ice slide its way through the pit of her stomach. The clock had been ticking in her dream, a relentless tick tock that had stopped when she’d woken. Now it ticked again, an irritating little taunt beneath the pounding of her blood in her ears. Get into her car and drive away, leaving whoever she had seen to their fate – undoubtedly she’d read something about it in the newspapers in a couple of days and feel like crap – or go slinking in there. A witness to another crime that she’d have to lie to the cops about, unless Jordan was the one sent to check out the call. He was the only one she could be entirely honest with, anybody else would either find the ‘I dreamed someone was in trouble’ crazy enough to shuffle her off to a locked ward or would turn those cold eyes on her that told her she was in the sort of trouble her sister would usually deal with.
Hands pulled from her pockets, fingers curling and uncurling just in case. Clea crept towards the next corner. Maybe she did need her mind tested after all that had happened in town. She could’ve called someone else in to look at this, gone to find a tall, dark, not so much a stranger anymore for an afternoon that would take her mind off of everything that went down in Mystic Falls. That would’ve pushed the problem onto someone else though and she hated just passing the buck.
The walls were probably covered in stuff she didn’t want to think about but Clea pressed back against a corner of the brick lined space. The mouth of another alleyway opened up inches from her shoulders, its narrow slot echoing with the sound of voices. They were muffled but there were definitely two. Maybe the dream wasn’t that far wrong. The ticking in her ears intensified, making it almost impossible to ignore now. This was it, burst in there or run.
God, running was tempting.
Hands out like she was some computer game character about to throw a fireball at an opponent, Clea threw herself around the corner. ”Leave him alone!” She could have thrown something across the alley at the two then but in a heartbeat her mind went blank, her face screwing up as she tried to figure out the logistics of the tall, dark, maybe more of a stranger than she’d thought and the smaller form in front of him. ”Damian … what are you doing out here?” Frown deepening, Clea let her hands sag. She hadn’t been able to see faces in the dream, wasn’t even sure she’d seen the size of the people. If it had been Damian in her head, would she have known? God, she hoped she would’ve done, but she hadn’t seen this.

━ in this world that kills beauty ; even gods cannot survive the fall. ━ Damian had spent the longest time searching for his sister, a part of him despised her after learning of what she had turned into. He had given up his life to keep her safe, he had made that deal to bring her back and now it feels as though he had died and endured those endless years in Hell for nothing. It was like she had chewed up her gratitude and spat it right back at his face. It irked him to no end, knowing that she was so mercilessly capable of doing such a thing to him. She did not sound like his sister any longer. There had been a few unlucky fellows whom had the displeasure of meeting his sister, the marks of her fangs still visible in their necks. One of the unlucky fellows was standing right before his eyes, talking about his sister as though she was something straight out of a fairytale. It was clear to Damian that the man had been compelled to utter nothing but lies. He kept saying things that made no sense as he continuously contradicted his own self which made Damian grow more and more upset with those endless lies as he reached to grasp a fistful of the man’s ugly navy blue shirt and tugged him close. “I have had enough of your lies, do you hear me? You either tell me the truth now or I will make you wish you never left your mother’s womb, you pathetic slug—” Damian’s threat was interrupted at the sound of a hauntingly familiar voice which made him release the man’s shirt from between his fingers. He turned to look over to find none other than Clea, his eyes returning back to normal as they were no longer pitch black.
“Ah, little one…” Damian had never exposed Clea to his demonic side. The side of him that was capable of making men and women squirm and scream in pain. He had always been so tender with her. Almost too much to the point where he wondered if his human side was beginning to make an appearance after being suppressed for so long.
“I could ask you the same thing, I—” Damian was interrupted when he heard the sound of the man cursing and before he could so much as run away from Damian, he grabbed him by the back of his shirt and tugged him back to where he was standing. “Ah, not so fast, my friend, I believe we are still not quite done with our discussion.” Damian didn’t address the man in the same tone he addressed Clea with. It was harsher and less human.
“Please, help me. He’s going to kill me. I… I don’t even know who he is! Please, I have kids!” The man attempted to plead with Clea which made him frown in an instant. “Kill you? Now that’s a bit of an exaggeration there, pal. I was not going to kill him. I was merely asking questions about my sister but he’s been babbling nonsense.” That pathetic little worm. Damian could feel himself beginning to tighten the hold he had on the man’s shirt which cut into his airways, making him go red in the face as his hands flailed helplessly until Damian loosened the hold that he had on his shirt after reminding himself that Clea was right there.
His eyes soon moved to settle on her, his expression softening a little bit. “Is it not time for you to head to work, little one?”

Nope!
Clea’s throat tightened as Damian looked over at her, his eyes fading from what she was sure had been a far darker black than the normal coffee brown, the pupils drowned out in that sea of … double nope!. She refused to believe that the guy who’d saved her life and had taken her out on her first real valentine’s day was the thing she’d been brought here by. The thing that had woken her from her dreams with a yelp, the clock’s tick of that danger echoing relentless in her ears util she was absolutely unable to ignore it … like him.
She licked her lips, found herself steadying as they tipped up faintly at the corners. The sense of danger was still there in the air, like she’d end up tasting it on the air. ”Hey.” The greeting slipped out hoarsely, the frown easing back into place as she looked from him to the guy he had pressed up against the wall. He wasn’t dead yet and with it being Damian there was little chance he’d end up that way. Damian was the sort of guy to rescue people, not to kill them.
As the man tried to bolt, the curses slipping out of him like some sort of verbal grease, Clea started forward a couple of steps. Damian’s fingers were curling into the guy’s shirt, dragging him back like he was nothing more than a squirming child. ”It’s OK,” Clea started to promise, ”he won’t do anything. You can trust him.” Only the guy patently didn’t. He seemed desperate not to continue their ‘discussion’. Damian’s tone was colder, harsh enough to have Clea curling her arms across her chest as she studied him and not the guy who suddenly started to babble.
Looking back at him, Clea blinked, shaking her head rapidly at his babbled plea. She pulled her hands free, held them up like she could ward off the twisted impression this guy had gotten of Damian. ”Nobody’s going to end up dead, I promise you. See…” She gestured at Damian, like his promise was all they needed to hear to make sure it wasn’t going to happen. The mention of his sister had a shudder rolling down her spine, the flicker of memory it brought enough to have her easing closer to Damian like she could bask in that reassuring air he’d radiated from the moment he’d scooped her up in the alleyway behind the Grill. Her white knight, taking her to his home, patching her up with the care of a man not capable of that sort of violence.
Green eyes lifted from the man who was choking himself as he tried to escape. He had been searching for his sister then, just like she’d once searched for her own – although SJ and Morgan sure as hell weren’t going around trying to feed from people. ”You think she’s here again?” she asked lightly. ”Maybe if he calms down … sir, I can promise you if you stop all of …” This. She gestured at him, going to reach for the guy and then stopping herself. If he’d stop for two minutes they could get this done civilly and she could get out of there, her job done, the huge favour she owed Damian for all he’d done for her starting to be paid.
They all seemed to be in a holding pattern though. The guy was still twisting around, her gaze was twisting back and forth between the two men in the alleyway, unsure how she could step in here and really help, Damian looking towards her with his expression softening back to the one she was used to. ”Work? No.” Clea shook her head, gesturing back in the direction she’d come. ”I was just coming from there. I’d … uh … there was a sense of like déjà vu … I kinda felt like I had to …” Way to go explaining that the thing in her head had decided to give her a heads up on this little meeting. Most people didn’t want to hear all that psychic mumbo jumbo that always just came off as new age bullshit anyway.
Taking that final step in, Clea settled her hand on Damian’s arm, fingers curling around his wrist, right where his grip on the guy had just loosened. There was always a danger in being the peace keeper, heading into war zones with her dad had taught her that but this was about family. ”Cross my heart, if you tell him what he needs to know about his sister, you’ll get to go home. You said you had kids right? You get what it’s like when you get desperate about family. What were you asking him?” She tipped her head up, looking into those eyes that had started to undo something in the pit of her stomach the moment she’d really seen him for the first time.

━ in this world that kills beauty ; even gods cannot survive the fall. ━ Clea seemed to believe that he was not going to kill the man — she was the one reassuring that nameless rat that he wasn’t going to kill him and that was enough to make the edges of his lips curl upwards in a small smile. He wondered if she was confident he wouldn’t do that because he had only shown her his good side, or if she believed in him. Either way, he was relieved that she didn’t immediately back away from him and call him slurs, especially that one damned slur that starts with m and ends with r. The man said something about why he should believe her when he was the one held in place like a rebellious kid captured by their parent before they could sneak out of the house. “I have been telling you the same thing nonstop, haven’t I? To trust me. If I wanted to hurt you, I would have done it already and believe me, you do have a perfectly punchable face.” Damian soon realized that maybe he should not have said that as the man only struggled harder, his arms flailing in the air which only made Damian snort. Idiot.
His eyes traveled back to Clea, her reassuring words him momentarily which made Damian relax a bit. He was definitely grateful for that because he could already feel his own patience running thin. He wasn’t the type to put up with that sort of behavior for long, it was one of the reasons he rarely interacted with humans. Clea was just — an exception. She was special. Damian nodded his head slowly at Clea’s question. “I have not seen her since that day at The Ruby Slipper club. She has been MIA ever since, but recently, more and more people have been walking around with these wounds.” Damian gestured to the puncture wound on the man’s neck, jabbing his finger at it. “Man up.” He grumbled when the man winced in pain. “I checked the camera where this unlucky lad works and there she was, clear as day.” Damian’s nose wrinkled in distaste. Talking about his sister always left a sour taste on his tongue. He despised it. Damian’s eyes moved to the struggling man again before he parted his lips to let out a sigh. He wasn’t sure how to make him calm down, how to make the guy willingly speak in a civil manner. He did know very … uncivil ways, though. But he would rather not do any of that in front of Clea.
Damian’s head tilted slightly to the side at Clea’s words, his curiosity visible on his expression as he watched her for a moment or so. “Oh.” He mumbled, brows furrowing. “But that’s incredibly dangerous, little one. Granted, I would never hurt you, but if I had been someone else…” Damian trailed off with a soft sigh falling from his lips before his eyes softened again. “But you didn’t care about that, did you? You still decided to check it out, still decided to stop, well, me. You have an incredible heart, little one.” Damian’s voice was rather soft as he spoke. ”You know, if you let me go, you two could have some alone time—” Damian was about to tighten the hold he had around his shirt to get him to choke on his own words but then he felt Clea’s fingers curl around his wrist and that made the thought disappear within seconds.
Damian hoped that Clea’s words would get to the man. She was a lot more human than Damian could ever be. He could feel the man nodding a few times, confirming that he was saying the truth when he had a family. He raised his hand, holding two fingers to confirm that he had two kids. Damian’s attention moved to meet Clea’s eyes when she directed a question at him. Those eyes were nothing short of beautiful. “When I checked the CCTV, I saw my sister saying something to him and she was not using her power on him. No, she was talking to him. I want to know what she told him but he keeps lying to me.” Damian said with a frown digging into his features. ”I can’t tell you, man. I can’t tell you. She’ll find me. She said I can’t tell anyone, especially this guy named Rian, or something. It was a super weird name.” This time, the answer was different and it made him tense at the mention of his human name. It seemed like Clea’s words had worked like a charm.
Damian should have controlled his anger, he should have let Clea do the whole convincing part because it was clearly not one of his strongest suits, but instead, he turned the man to face him and wrapped his fingers around the man’s throat, lifting him into the air which made his legs kick back and forth helplessly. “Trust me, what I’m capable of doing to you and your family is far worse. What did she tell you?” The man only closed his eyes and shook his head as best as he could, his face going red from the lack of oxygen.

People weren’t kidding about the fight or flight reaction. It was hard wired into all of them and like this guy, Clea had always tended towards flight. It was a natural instinct to want to get the hell out of dodge when something terrifying was happening. The truly brave ones didn’t even consider giving into it, they were the ones that waded into that trouble to try and help. Damian had done that for her. The hulking form appearing in that alleyway to sweep her up and shield her from the nightmare that was his own family. She’d tried to do the same, channelling her real family, her adoptive one, Damian too. Squaring her shoulders to rush into battle, or in this case to walk into the middle of it like some sort of peacekeeper.
She sighed as the man doubted her. Would she have done different in his situation? Maybe, but she wasn’t the one holding back secrets here … well, not really. Her gaze twitched up to Damian at that. It wasn’t like she’d managed to say ‘surprise, I’m a psychic’ yet. She made a small choked sound as Damian tried an ‘I told you so’ that ended with a ‘your face was just asking for it’. ”I could cross my heart and promise if it makes you believe it anymore,” she told the man, trying not to study his face too hard to see if Damian’s observation was right. ”Hey. Hey! Stop it.” Making an abortive grab for the guy’s flailing arms, she sighed. This wasn’t gonna go anywhere until some sort of truth spilled out into the fetid air around them.
What the man said wouldn’t necessarily lead Damian to his sister but it would be a breadcrumb, one he’d obviously been looking for. Clea’s eyes fixed on the wounds at the man’s neck as Damian pointed them out, her hand creeping up to the point where her own had been. They weren’t proof that it had been his sister feeding but it was a red flag – almost literally. Her brow furrowed, she looked up at Damian instead of the wincing man. ”Like she did at the Grill? God, she’s got balls of steel.” Maybe there was a hint of sympathy on her face now as she looked back at the squirming man. ”I guess it didn’t show where she swaggered off to.” Probably to her next meal, leaving a trail a mile wide behind like she wanted her brother to chase her. Was it a game for her?
It seemed to be for most of them, taunting the people trying to stop them. That was almost what she’d anticipated when she’d crept away from the Grill this afternoon with that worry curling tighter in the pit of her stomach. She saw the concern on Damian’s face and offered up a small appreciative smile. ”I’m tougher than I look,” she promised. ”And … it’s not the first time.” Lips pinched slightly, she shook her head, a chuckle stoppering up behind. There wasn’t really much choice in the matter but she did do it because she didn’t want to ignore those cries for help. ”That makes two of us,” she said firmly. Her expression pinched as she shot a look at the guy, a sound of disgust rolling out of her even as the heat rose in her cheeks.
This wasn’t the place … not for any of this. Curling her hand around Damian’s wrist she tried to break it up, to get them moving to the point where they’d all get what they needed – and they could out of here to somewhere that wasn’t making her skin crawl. Clea had looked up at Damian but she caught the man’s nod, progress. ”There, that’s easy then, buddy. All you have to do is tell him.” Not using her power, that meant he hadn’t been compelled, the only block was … fear. She felt that, the knot in her throat. ”She’s not going to find you,” she promised, the frown returning at the mention of ‘Rian’. Who the hell was his sister running from? A maker? ”Damian saved me from her once. We can protect you too.” It was a gentle nudge.
What rolled out of Damian wasn’t gentle. Shit. She was scrabbling for him immediately, hands on his arms, trying to worm her way between the two men before he choked the life out of the one his sister had made a meal out of. ”Stop! Damian, please. This isn’t you, don’t hurt him. I can get him to tell you. Please, put him down, let me talk to him. We’ll find out what she said and we can get out of here. Can you do it for me?” The man’s protests had cut off into those stomach churning noises behind her, the life being choked out of a man who just wanted to get home to his family. Damian wanted to find his but this wasn’t the way to do it. Her hand crept to his cheek, trying to get him to look back down at her.

━ in this world that kills beauty ; even gods cannot survive the fall. ━ Damian's eyes drifted to rest on Clea, his expression softening a little bit. There was something about her that showed she was worthy of every last bit of trust. He could tell that the other man was starting to feel the same way, too. Though he still wriggled like a bug that has been sprayed with bug-killing spray. It was embarrassing, for the man, that is. For Damian, he was having a good time watching him struggle like that, arms flailing around.
Damian let out a scoff as he nodded his head in agreement with Clea. "That, she does." His sister's extraordinary skill wasn't her speed or her ability to woo men and women alike, no, it was her ability to bounce on his nerves effortlessly. It pissed him off to no extent, really. "No and that's the part that's pissing me off the most. If the cameras had caught her, I wouldn't be here talking to Mr. Wriggle arms right here who has been wasting my time with his gibberish nonsense." He jerked his chin in the direction of the man, his lips parting to let out a soft sigh.
"And I do not doubt that, not even for a second.” Damian's tone lacked any sarcasm in it, if anything, his tone was genuine. Damian quirked an eyebrow at the statement that soon followed, his head tilted slightly to the side. "Well, I do hope you plan on elaborating on that one day. I would love to hear it." Damian added not long after, forgetting all about the guy's existence for a moment, all too focused on Clea. Until, of course, he decided to ruin it when he opened his mouth but Damian shut him up all too soon.
Damian could tell that his sister's true power lay in the fact that she could make men twice her size shiver in fear like this. She had him so swallowed by his own fear that he was uttering nothing but complete nonsense to try and push Damian in a completely different direction but he wasn't falling for it. Quite the opposite, actually. He could see right through his little act. Maybe it had everything to do with the fact that he had been exposed to that sort of manipulation one too many times to know how to spot it with ease. "I'm quite capable of handling her. I have done it once and I can easily do it again." Damian's tone was nothing short of confident but even then, his confidence was still not enough to make that annoying little ant speak and so his control snapped before he could reel that anger back in like he had always done in the past, refusing to give in to his demonic nature but there were certain times when that very same demonic nature won with ease. He just hated the fact that it had happened in front of Clea when he had only wanted her to see the best of him.
That dark intent to hurt and kill was so strong that it nearly consumed him whole. That man's neck was fragile and he could so easily snap it like a twig without even breaking a sweat but before he could succumb to that, it was Clea's voice that brought him back. The sound of her voice and the feeling of her hands on his arms, trying to make him release the guy before he could choke him to death was enough to make him snap out of it, his dark and soulless eyes regaining the light in them again as they flickered back to normal, the harsh grit of his teeth relaxing as he slowly lowered him down. The man coughed and gasped for air, calling Damian all sorts of names for that crazy stunt that only made him even more terrified. His eyes slowly moved back to Clea, blinking a few times in a feeble attempt to keep that anger under control. "Alright, little one. Have at it." Damian said with a nod of his head following, his expression shifting into one of guilt for a moment. "I'm sorry that you had to see that." He could still remember her clearly telling him that it wasn't him, but it was. He was capable of doing so much worse... He was just always scrambling to show only the best of him to Clea because the thought of driving her away scared him. "I'll keep my distance." Damian held up his hands in a mock surrender gesture, keeping his eyes fixed on Clea because he worried that if he were to look back at that agitating guy, he'd go back to strangling him to death.

She’d have said bravery ran in the family, but there was a world of difference not giving a single fuck – like Damian’s sister – the white knight thing he’d done for her. The siblings were night and day, which had to have been making that search for her a thousand times harder for him. She hadn’t known about her sisters for most of her life, had only spent time with SJ afterwards, but Clea knew that no matter who SJ had turned out to be, she’d have wanted to find her. That was a bond you couldn’t break. Even if they were bloodthirsty monsters.
Clea swallowed hard, her heart squeezing for Damian – although that sympathy wouldn’t extend to his sister. She rubbed her fingers lightly over the wounds on her throat. Maybe that had been part of his sister’s game, forcing people to feel that bolt of terror at the thought of ratting her out. ”So just one thread to pull,” Clea said lightly. That thread was reluctant, for whatever reason. She knew the frustration of having one right there and wanting nothing more than to pull it. Damian was desperate to pull it, even if it meant snapping the string in the process. By now Mr. Wriggle Arms had to be feeling that urge rolling off of the taller man.
No matter how much frustration poured from him, how much of an edge the air had taken on, Clea couldn’t see anything more than the man who’d scooped her tenderly up, the one who’d cleaned her throat and pressed the band aids into place with such care. The one who’d kept her safe all night when he could’ve just let her wander out there alone. The corner of her mouth lifted further as he spoke with such conviction now. Without the man still squirming there beside them she might’ve flexed in proof, but this was a ticking time bomb, one pushing parts of their reveal into the future. ”One day,” she promised with a nod. ”After this … after you’ve found your sister, I think we need a long talk.” One where she put all her cards on the table, just to make it fair.
That priority squeaked back in, on the man’s pointed voice. For someone so close to having the truth shaken violently out of them he was awfully keen to provoke a reaction. Was it honestly better to get yourself killed than face the woman again? That thought had a shudder running through her, her fingers running back and forth on Damian’s wrist like it would somehow soothe all of them. ”See,” she said softly, trying to urge the guy into opening up. ”There’s no need worry. You have both of us on your side.” Although maybe she wasn’t as confident about it as Damian was, there was something in his voice that had her stomach twisting in appreciation. He’d saved her, she wasn’t forgetting that at any point.
Maybe she wouldn’t forget that snap either. It had seemingly come from nowhere, fear rolling through her in an instant. This time her grab wasn’t so gentle, her heartbeat hammering in her throat as she tried to protect both of them – Damian from himself as much as the man from him. She stared up at him, those eyes that had darkened from their usual velveteen brown to something that had her throt going tight. He was more like the thing she’d seen in her dream, but still, she couldn’t be afraid of him. As he seemed to settle, she raised a hand, brushing the backs of her fingers over her jaw like she was calming an animal. ”I’m sorry you had to go through it,” she said, countering his apology. Clea let her hand trail down from his jaw to his shoulder, reaching for one of those hands he held up, gripping it as she turned away to the man behind her.
Clea raised her chin, looking the guy in the eyes with that stubborn look on her face. She might’ve looked like a pushover but she wasn’t. ”You’ve seen what he can do now. Do you honestly want that on your side or against you?” she asked coolly. Taking a step in, Clea stretched the bridge of their hands between her and Damian behind her. ”All he needs is a hint, some direction to start in. It’s a family thing. You have your own right? A brother? A sister? Someone who matters enough that you would do anything for them. That’s all he wants to do for his sister and right now you’re the only one who can give them that news.” Seaglass eyes settled on the man’s. She didn’t have that ability to sway people’s minds the way some psychics did, but she wasn’t without charm either.
The man grunted, trying to pull back as she reached for-his arm but there was nowhere for him to go. Clea closed her other hand around his arm, pleading with her eyes. He shook for a moment, then seemed to settle like all the air was going out of him. ”The hotel,” he managed eventually. ”There was a keycard, that fancy place on the square. If she thinks I saw it …”
Her lips curving, Clea winked at him. This was more than they’d had, maybe enough to get her finally. ”Cross my heart, she’ll never realise where we got the news from. Go!” She didn’t know if Damian was done with the guy but she was pretty sure they were going to get much more out of him. As the man scrambled away, all flailing limbs and whimpers, she turned back, turned her gaze up at him. ”Do you want me to come with you?” If she shoe was on the other foot there would’ve been no stopping her rush in that direction.

━ in this world that kills beauty ; even gods cannot survive the fall. ━ Damian nodded his head slowly, his frustration probably eating away at his face, begging to be released, preferably on Mr. Wriggle Arms over there because, truth be told, he had a perfectly punchable face and Damian was merely seconds away from closing his fist and caving in to that temptation but for Clea's sake, he had to hold back. It was strange how hard he was trying not to give into his nature. He shouldn't shy away from harming others, if anything, he should be bathing in the blood of his victims by now, but his hands stayed relatively clean of any blood like some sort of faulty demon. If any other demon were to see him, they would kill him and send him back to Hell just to make sure that he gets tortured for long enough to erase every last bit of good in him forever. "A thread that I want to cut off with razor sharp scissors very soon, please." Damian said with an exasperated sigh falling from his lips not long after, looking every last bit done with that stupid cat and mouse chase with his sister. If you ask him, he'd much rather spend his time with Clea instead. It was strange how hard he was trying to make sure that his sister doesn't hurt anyone else while in actuality, between the two of them, he was the one who was most likely to actually kill someone. Was he being a hypocrite? Most definitely, but he'd rather be caught dead than to admit that out loud. His eyes soon found Clea again, her words making the edges of his lips quirk up into a smile. "I would certainly love that. I do have quite a lot that I need to talk to you about and I am quite excited to hear what you have to say to me."
Clea seemed to be doing a lot better at talking to the guy. Maybe it was comforting words or her sweet voice, either way, she was doing a stellar job so far and he could see the guy beginning to look affected by it. He knew that if he opened his mouth, that look might just fade away entirely, so he didn't say anything and let Clea do the talking instead until all of that went to shit and he lost his patience because that little shit was dancing around the topic so elaborately and so obviously that it made something in Damian snap. The sooner that asshole talked, the faster he could get this matter finished before it could fester and grow into something that he can't quite contain. Clea's apology made his expression soften before he shook his head. "It's quite alright, love." When Clea held his hand in her own, he felt a small smile tug at the corner of his lips as he allowed himself to fully enjoy the feeling of her smaller hand in his own. He experimentally ran his thumb over her knuckles before his attention drifted back up to Clea and the other man as she took it upon herself to try her luck and it seemed to work a lot better than his attempt had. "Finally, you little schmuck." Damian breathed out an exasperated sigh followed by a shake of his head. "What I meant to say was, thank you. Your secret is safe with us." Damian fixed his wording, offering a thin-lipped smile that stretched too far to be actually genuine before his attention moved to Clea as she promised the guy the same thing before she told him to go. Damian offered a sarcastic wave of his hand before he watched him run away, looking like he was seconds away from collapsing on the ground.
"Impressive work, little one. You're a rather dangerous one, aren't you? I do have a feeling that I'd fess up anything you ask me to if you try that on me." Damian praised with an impressed grin forming on his lips. If he didn't have her with him, he wouldn't have been able to get much out of that guy. He would've stayed in the same vicious cycle of losing his patience over and over again. Damian allowed his thumb to gently trace over her knuckles again at her question. "It might not be safe for you, little one." Damian didn't doubt her ability to protect herself but he was still worried about her. "I, for one, would love to have you with me but my sister isn't ━ nice, as I'm sure you know already." Damian was aware that Clea had experienced his sister's cruelty first-hand already. "Would you like to come with me?" Damian turned the question around to really know if she wanted to come with him. "It won't hurt my feelings if you wish to keep a safe distance between you and my sister. You know my priority is making sure you are safe."

For years after she’d learned about her sisters, there’d been no sign of them. She could Google with the best of them, could see things in her dreams she wished she couldn’t – everybody else’s painful future – but her own search had led nowhere, not until she’d finally caught sight of SJ in the mists of her sleep. One thread, that had been all she’d had – not so different to Damian, with his sister now – but she’d wanted to wrap it around her hand and hold onto it. Even without the look on his face, Clea would’ve been sure it wasn’t entirely the same with Damian. After all, her sister didn’t go around trying to drain innocent people, and she certainly didn’t threaten them hard enough to have them practically peeing in their pants, and her own family wanting to …
Clea’s brows drew together faintly with concern. Damian seemed frustrated with the hunt, but what was he going to do when he actually got his hands on her? Would all of this trouble melt away, leaving it the sort of reunion she’d ended up with when she’d finally found SJ? Or would it be filled with bitterness, all the pain of getting there colour everything. She guessed that waited to be seen, but however it turned out, she’d be there, no running this time from a conversation that was certain to be twisted and painful in more ways than one. Clea swallowed hard, but her smile curled up to echo his. Difficult was a sliding scale when you had a smile and that kinda promise waiting like a safety mat. ”You say that now,” she said, a hoarse edge to her voice. Would he light up the same way when he found out that she could practically see every creepy thing in this town coming? Including this little interlude in the alleyway.
That news might have comforted the guy Damian had intimidated, if he wasn’t already squirming like he was going to shake himself to pieces from the fear that Damian’s sister had instilled in him. If he wasn’t terrified that the guy, the - no, she wasn’t going there, even if that shift in Damian’s eyes had unsettled her the same way – man in front of him was going to start pummelling the truth out of him. Clea felt that cold slide through her own gut before she steadied both herself and Damian with that brush of her fingers. His were warm around hers as she found his fingers and squeezed. It wasn’t alright, not really, not when things happened that could tear apart your whole world.
Relief ran through her as the brief hit of truth rolled out of the guy. Clea dipped her head, her grin squelched. Her eyes rolled up, meeting the man’s as he began to scramble away from her. ”We’re eternally grateful,” she shot after him, knowing that beneath that sarcastic edge, Damian probably was. Gratitude had never seemed to be a problem for him, at least from what she’d seen.
Turning on her heel, Clea shrugged, a little self conscious about her role in getting what they needed out of a guy who’d just needed the right sort of pressure to get that key turning. Alright, maybe there was some pride there, enough to have her taking a tiny half bow as the praise rolled out. She looked up at those eyes that had returned to the warm brown that had settled soft as velvet on her nerves, even at their first meeting. ”Only dangerous if you’re trying to keep secrets from me. I get the feeling that’s not a problem with you.” When it came to her at least. The mysteries shifted, seeming to spill out with a bright honesty that was a little disconcerting until you realised you wanted to hear it. And she did want to, all that they were prepared to tell one another, once Damian’s sister was in hand.
Lifting her other hand, she covered his, drawing him towards her, like she needed that wall of heat. Maybe she did, there was something quivering in her stomach at the thought of seeing the woman again. ”I might not have looked it the last time, but I can defend myself. I’m stronger than I look.” When she could see it coming at least. Last time Damian’s sister had blindsided her, it wouldn’t happen that way again. ”Oh I know,” Clea promised tightly. She gave his hand a little tug, continue to try and erase that feeling of nervousness with his presence. Just minutes before the flash of his eyes had left her doubting him, but with the return of the brown that trust had come back.
Lips pressed together, Clea nodded at his question. Her brows furrowed, her hand peeling from the top of his to settle lightly on his arm. He’d gone after the guy alone and had been stumbling through the dark, trying to shake the answers from him. ”Right now, mime’s making sure you’re safe too. You’re not talking me out of this one. It’ll hurt my feelings if you try to.” Although she was joking about that. One corner of her mouth ticked up as she dragged him around until her arm was linked with his and she could bump him back the way she’d come. ”It’s just across the square, we can walk. Do you really think she’s still gonna be there?” Maybe she was like the beasts vampires were meant to be, hiding out in their dark little warrens, only poking their heads out again to kill.
