— when you look at yourself, are you a man or a monster? —
Elio's eyes slowly scanned his surroundings, with a frown digging into his features. It was too crowded in there, and he hated it, there were different people bumping into him and each time, he looked over his shoulder to glare at them before he stared ahead again. He wasn't here for a 'fun' time or to get wasted, he had someone he was looking for. He wasn't going to fuck them up in here, but he was going to keep an eye on them until he could get them alone.
Elio really had no idea that he was going to meet his mother here, of all places. His eyes relaxed on the dancers and while some felt arousal at the sight of exposed skin and curvy bodies, he didn't feel a single change, not even a little. He grew up all too accustomed to the sight of exposed flesh that seeing others exposed like that did nothing to him, and he wasn't exactly in touch with that side of himself, so most of the time, he was completely unaware of what got a rise out of him.
He got himself a drink to keep him company and kept his eyes focused on the man who had a hit on his head worth five grand. Not only that, but he wondered just who he had to piss off to wind up with a fucking hit on his head for that price, but he wasn't complaining. The money would be enough to keep him afloat for a while. All he had to do was kill that motherfucker.
Elio leaned back on his seat, his legs spread to get comfortable as he moved his drink up to his lips, taking a quick sip from it. The couch he was sitting on dipped, and he didn't have to look to know that it was someone looking for an ounce of attention. Their hand soon rested on his thigh, which made the edge of his lips tug down into an unimpressed frown. "Fuck off." There was a hint of offense on the girl's expression before she got up and left him alone, murmuring something under her breath about him being a rude asshole. Elio looked over at her for a moment before his attention drifted back to the man he was keeping an eye on. "Fuck." He mumbled when he couldn't see the man anywhere. Elio pushed himself up from the couch and pushed past a few people as he looked around for the man. During his search, he bumped into someone hard enough to make him step back. "Watch where you're fucking going," he told the woman with a bite to his tone, though there was something about her that seemed to make him stop.
Elio eyed her for a few moments before he shook his head and looked away so he could go back to his original mission. Where the fuck did that guy go?

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ SHE COULD FEEL SOMETHING. A challenge, maybe? It wasn’t her friendly ghost; Hannya would’ve known within seconds━they would’ve met somewhere in the middle. She could sense it from upstairs, and in the depths of Hector’s office, knees flattened uncomfortably to the floorboards. It was better than the marks on her thighs from the edge of his desk digging into her flesh, Hannya supposed. It didn’t matter much either way. Nothing permeated this skin permanently, and nothing ever would━not unless she chose to abandon it.
Dolly cried out from within, begging for her freedom, and Hannya cackled back at her. Yeah, never mind. She’d keep the human alive for at least thirty lifetimes, forever mentally a teenager, tortured day in and day out seeing what her body was being used for.
Speaking of.
Rising up to stand, still in her heels, Hannya grinned devilishly at her boss. “Back t’work,” She crooned, voice sweet and sing-songy, before turning and slipping out. As soon as she was through the threshold, Hannya’s smile dropped, her focus trained on the doorway to the stairs and nothing else.
Sinking down into the lower level, into her kingdom, her hazel eyes scanned quickly, flicking through each unfamiliar face, trying to find the exact body emitting that energy. Her energy, but weaker. Hannya waded into the sea of bodies, playing a game of Hot and Cold with whatever it was until she felt like she was on fire.
It touched her. Hit her, forcing her body to go rigid with a single step to steady herself again.
Burning.
‘Watch where you're fucking going,’
Searing.
It was anger now, welling up at the disrespect, but how could she not recognize her boy? Elio, not that pitiful recreation she’d met before, but hers. A son if she ever had one, could have one, Hannya’s in every way possible. And he was about to leave.
Reaching out to snatch his shirt collar, she roughly tugged Elio back to her and smacked him clean across the face before grabbing his jaw in her hand. “How dare you speak to your mother like that?” Clicking her tongue, Hannya let it sink in for only a moment before that same smirk she’d given Hector spread back across her face.
“Hi, baby,” She cooed, voice gentle now, releasing his jaw to slick her fingers up to his cheek, cradling it in her palm. He looked the same; five years hadn’t changed his features dramatically, only became sharper, less child-like. She wasn’t sure whether she liked it or not. Bending forward, Hannya pressed a kiss to the apple of his other cheek before taking the time to grin at him again. “Missed ya. How’dja find me?”

— when you look at yourself, are you a man or a monster? —
Elio had felt it the second he entered the ruby slipper club, there was a pull, though he wasn't sure where that pull was taking him or why he was feeling that way. He wasn't here to dance or have a good time, he was here to finish off some asshole who was causing a lot more trouble than what he was worth. Elio knew he had messed up when his eyes left his target because if there was one thing he had learned, it would be to never look away from his target. Now, it was a game of cat and mouse, and he was more than ready to capture that lousy mouse between his teeth and eat it.
How dare you speak to your mother like that?
But his original plan got trampled under powerful heels when the collar of his shirt was grabbed, tugging him back to his previous position and once again, his hard eyes were relaxing on the same woman who had bumped into him. His lips parted to say something and whatever he was going to say, was not going to be pretty, but the words died on his tongue when he got slapped, the impact making him turn his head, the sound of the impact consumed eagerly by the loud music in the background and when his jaw was grabbed, his fists clenched hard as his lips parted to say something, but her sentence effectively turned him mute as his eyes widened. Mother? His eyes scanned the unfamiliar features staring back at him, his confusion apparent on his expression for a moment before it seemed to ease away. There was something about her that felt so familiar, and it sure as fuck wasn't her face because that face was not the one he was used to. He'd sensed that when he was a kid, still under her care. That darkness that resembled what he had within him.
It's actually her.
Elio felt a shiver rush down his spine at her touch, his eyes closing momentarily and with his eyes closed like this, he could tell it was her. It wasn't some elaborate hoax to catch him off-guard. He could point her out in a crowd, or in the dark because he knew her, or he at least thought that he did until she left and simply never returned.
That reminder was enough to make him open his eyes and push her away, wrath visible in his eyes. His cheek still tingling from the kiss left there that reminded him of the old days, that made him feel like no time had passed at all. He had to remind himself that it had been five years since they last laid eyes on each other. "You missed me?" Elio repeated, venom dripping from his voice, before he scoffed. "No, fuck you." He was so angry at her for leaving, but at the same time, maybe it was his fault that she'd left. Perhaps he wasn't enough for her to want to stay.
And somehow, that thought made him angrier.
His eyes were soon consumed by a complete dark gray color. "Fuck. You." He pointed his index at her. "You don't get to act like my mother." Elio took a moment to really look at her before he shook his head slowly. "You don't get to fucking do that, not when you don't even look like her anymore. Not when it's been five fucking years." Five whole years of thinking 'what did I do wrong?' five years of forcing himself to be independent and fearless to make her proud, but she never came back to see it for herself. She never came back.

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ SO, PERHAPS HANNYA HAD been expecting an unrealistic reunion. She forgot how fickle human emotions were and, just because Elio was her brood, didn’t mean he wasn’t at least partly one of them. The host was around when Hannya was absent, so it only made sense that he resembled one of them.
His emotions wafted out so thickly Hannya thought she might just be able to drink them from the air. He was angry and betrayed, and Hannya was torn by them. Elio was just about the only other being she truly cared for; his hurt made her hurt, but she was still a demon on top of it all━and his negativity was what she fed on.
Elio’s eyes fell closed, their shared demon energy swarming each other in a cloud, and Hannya knew he was testing this, testing her. She couldn’t be offended when she’d taught him so well━was it ‘teaching’ or trauma? Ah, no matter.
Hissing at his shove, so bold as to put hands on her again, Hannya settled in his wrath, releasing Elio’s shirt with two steps back. Though they shouldn’t have, her lips ticked up at the edges when hatred spilled from him, her own voice a purr in major contrast. “Fuck me?” She stayed where she was, though, not testing his space━yet. Elio could have his little tantrum, but in the end he’d return to her. He had to. Hannya wouldn’t accept any other outcome.
‘Fuck. You. You don’t get to act like my mother.’
Her brows went up, almost mocking Elio’s irritation, still somewhat unsure why he was so furious━then the accusations came. He wasn’t used to this skin, and he felt… abandoned? “Oh, poor muffin,” Pouting as she would at a baby━as if he was still young enough for it━Hannya reached out to lay her palm against the centre of his chest. He was warm and solid━again, she thought about how he’d grown a lot in five years━but he was there, and he was hers. She let him feel it for a second, that dark energy, born of Hell, that made them who they were━that made them one.
“It’s only five years. I blink and a decade is gone,” When you’d been ‘alive’ as long as Hannya had, time passed differently. In true selfish demon fashion, though, she’d forgotten that her progeny wasn’t used to it. Still half-human, he’d craved a mother who was as loyal and as settled as the wind. “Why’re ya so angry, sweet boy? Ya hadta leave th’nest sooner or later, huh? ‘N ya look like you’ve been flyin’. Look atcha, Elio. Darlin’.” Nearly whispering the words in Dolly’s twang, eyelids drooping, she gave him a coy smile. “You don’t wanna keep bein’ mad, now do ya?” She was more than happy either way.
“We change shells often, honey bun. Can’t ya do that?” Now more curious than tempting, Hannya’s focus really honed in on her baby━as if she could read him like a book just like this.

— when you look at yourself, are you a man or a monster? —
Elio could have sworn that, for a moment, he felt a whole new emotion other than anger and hatred. It left an acid taste on his tongue, and it seemed to take him a moment to realize that what he was feeling was fear. If he were a coward, he would've scrambled to take the insult back and apologize instead, but Elio had been taught by his mother to never be a coward. "Yes." Elio snapped through gritted teeth, his own eyes narrowing into slits. It seemed to cover up the fact that he was scared of her. It was so easy for his hatred to consume that fear and erase it from existence before it could sprout in his chest and make him beg for forgiveness instead.
Elio hated how one touch from Hannya was enough to make him feel like a kid again, make him feel like no time had passed at all. His anger wavered and for a moment, his eyes seemed to spill less hate. Elio looked down at the hand on his chest then back again at his mother who did not look familiar at all and if he didn't know her well enough, he would've thought that the woman standing in front of him was just fucking with him but no. It was her, he could feel it. He could almost taste that darkness that seemed to always loom over her. "Don't talk to me like that." Elio warned, but for some reason, he didn't seem to lean away from her touch. He refused to acknowledge that voice in the back of his head telling him that the only reason he wasn't pulling away was because he missed her. "I'm not a little kid anymore."
"It might have passed in a blink for you, but for me, it wasn't that quick." There was still so much hatred in his voice as he refused to relent, refused to allow himself to acknowledge just how much he had missed her.
"Why?" Elio repeated, with a scoff following. "Because you left when I needed you." He shook his head, the edges of his lips dipped down in an angry frown. "If I had to leave the nest sooner or later, why couldn't it be later? I waited for you to come back. I kept telling myself there's no way you would do something like that, but it turns out you were more than fucking capable of doing something like that, I was just a fucking idiot."
Elio almost wanted to forget everything and start anew. Almost. But he wasn't going to do that, he was going to make sure his betrayal was heard loud and clear. "Oh, trust me, I do." That was his answer to his mother's question, his eyes narrowing into slits as he clenched his jaw hard. Elio's eyes scanned the body that his mom was in and when she asked if he can't do the same thing as her, he shook his head slowly. "I can look like someone else, but that shit ain't permanent." Elio's tongue prodded at the inside of his cheek as his eyes finally moved up to meet his mom's. "But you know what? I'm glad you don't look like her anymore. Makes it a whole fuckin' lot easier to hate you."

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ OOOH, HE WAS SO SNAPPY. Like a kitten succumbing to natural instincts, batting wildly at a treat dangled above. Poor, sweet little Elio, just a victim to circumstances━a casualty of war. Hannya truly cared about him and his wellbeing, but his feelings? That was a much harder sway.
His words were sharp, but he didn’t push her away again, and Hannya knew he could feel it━them. “No, clearly you’re not, but you’ll always be my baby,” She hummed, slowly moving in closer, dipping her head to flick her tongue along the shell of his ear. “I get to talk to you how I want.” Her whisper was like a snake’s hiss, smooth, low and drawn out, but incredibly dangerous. Leaning away again to mean his eyes, Hannya watched him continue his little hissy fit, complaining about all the things she’d never heard a demon whine about.
He waited? Hannya watched him curiously, hand finally falling from his chest. She didn’t understand why anyone would do such a thing━she wanted humans to fawn over her, but didn’t know why he hadn’t taken her disappearance as a sign to pull on his big boy pants and get out of there. A small piece of her━or perhaps Dolly━felt for him. It pierced the human’s fragile heart, and she whined about all the people Hannya had hurt. The rest of them Hannya didn’t care much about, but Elio was different. Perhaps Joel, as well, but she assumed that was merely Dolly’s interference. Elio was never shared, though; Elio was Hannya’s.
“Wasn’t ‘bout you, gumdrop.” Raising a brow, suddenly confused, her voice gentle like a mother’s ought to be. “It wasn’t your fault, just hadta move on. S’what we are, what we do.” She paused, a grin beginning to pick up the edges of her lips. “Never stopped thinkin’ ‘bout you, though.” That wasn’t explicitly true, she didn’t think about him every second of her life, but it was a human saying that just made sense. And, ultimately, Hannya was trying to cradle him so he wouldn’t be so damn angry. It was better when it was forced outwards, not at her, but she was still amused in any case. “And clearly ya didn’t need me, baby. You’re doin’ just fine on your own.” Motioning to him again, Hannya smirked proudly. She’d done that, and she’d done a damn good job, too. He was perfect━all his little cracks and chips, too━they were beautiful.
‘But you know what? I'm glad you don't look like her anymore. Makes it a whole fuckin' lot easier to hate you.’
Until those words, Hannya was still wearing an amused expression. Until those words, she wanted to wrap him up in her arms as if he were still a baby and hold him ‘til he stopped crying. But now? What an ungrateful little shit. “That crack wh-re I was in before, the one who looks like your mama, is dead. I dumped ‘er body; they called it an ov-rdose and cremated ‘er. Now she’s probably in some mass grave somewhere.” Grabbing his face how she had before, except with her fingers digging into his cheeks this time, Hannya kept his head pointed directly at hers. “Watch your fuckin’ tongue, ya hear me? You couldn’t hate me if ya tried, baby. Stop whinin’ now and tell me why you’re in Mystic Falls, huh? ‘Stead of bein’ so rude, just fill me in on what I missed.” Smiling sweetly now, Hannya dropped her hand, patted and rubbed his chest, then his shoulder, squeezing it to see if she could bring him in for a hug. “Bet you are glad I don’t look like her anymore, hm?” Humming softly, she raised her brows at Elio, trying to gauge just how human he really was.

— when you look at yourself, are you a man or a monster? —
Elio had grown quite a bit since the last time she had seen him, but she was still talking to him like no time had passed at all, like he was still a child which bounced on his nerves in a way that was visible on his expression as a frown began tugging at his features unpleasantly. “No, you don’t get to do that anymore. You lost the privilege the second you walked outta that door, so don’t bullshit me.” His words were laced with venom and underlying hurt that he wasn’t allowing himself to feel because if he allowed himself to feel it, it would soon become visible on his expression and he didn’t want her to see it.
Elio had so much that he wanted to say to her, he wanted to show her just how much she’d hurt him when she walked out of that door. He had so much underlying anger and betrayal that he wasn’t even sure where to start. Elio knew deep down that it was his own fault for relying so much on her and for getting attached when she always gave off the impression that she wasn’t going to be around forever. It was his own fault for expecting too much. But he still couldn’t help but feel upset about it because it always felt like she was the only one who understood him at times. She was the only one with that kind of darkness that matched his own.
She was the only one like him.
Elio’s eyes narrowed slightly as he listened to Hannya, his jaw was still clenched tightly. “Yeah, well…” Elio trailed off when she told him that she had to leave, had to move on. From him. “I wish it wasn’t.” Elio answered instead when she told him that it’s what they do, his voice losing most of its heat but his eyes surely never did. Elio’s brow quirked up when she admitted that she never stopped thinking about him, he shook his head with a small scoff following not long after. It seemed to affect him, though as his frown slowly eased away. At least he wasn’t the only one who was stuck thinking about her. “When you say that I clearly didn’t need you, are you just saying that to make yourself feel better? Because that was not my fucking experience.” His words left a bitter taste on his tongue and truth be told, he wanted to take his words back the second they left his lips because they made him look weak, made him sound weak, too.
Elio’s frown disappeared almost immediately as he listened to Hannya, his hands soon leaving the safety of his pockets as he stared at her while she revealed the fact that his mom was actually dead. “What?” Elio’s voice was barely above a whisper as his expression shifted into shock and before he could say anything else, his face was grabbed between Hannya’s fingers, her nails digging into his cheeks in a way that made him release a small groan. Elio lifted his hand to close his fingers around Hannya’s wrist, though he wasn’t doing anything to pry off the hold she had on his cheek. He met her eyes without saying anything for a few moments, still trying to process the fact that his mom was dead, but she was also right before his eyes. Should he mourn her death? Or should he be relieved that she’s still right there in front of him? That was the darkness he grew up with and that’s the comforting yet haunting presence he got used to… But there were still moments when she was soft and caring. There were moments when she gently cleaned his wounds and told him to take better care of himself. He could easily remember that one time he came home to find her holding a cake for him on his birthday and that was the only birthday that Elio had ever celebrated.
Fuck.
Elio had never been more torn. Elio snapped out of his thoughts again, his eyes settling easily on Hannya. “I’m here for you. I’ve been looking for you.” Elio revealed, panting as if he had just finished running an entire marathon. When Hannya released him from her grip, he didn’t move back and this time, when she touched him, he didn’t step away from it as if it had burnt him. Elio was still wrapped up in the fact that he wasn’t going to see her again, so wrapped up that he actually relented and moved closer into Hannya’s embrace and it felt both right and wrong at the same time, but he still didn’t lean away until a few moments later and when he did, he heard Hannya’s question and his lips parted and closed a few times and for once, he didn’t direct an angry glare at Hannya. “I don’t know.” Elio breathed out instead as he ran a hand through his hair, brushing the long strands away from his face. “I don’t fucking know.” He repeated as he lowered his hand back by his side. “How much of it was actually you and not her?” Elio asked after allowing a pregnant pause to stretch between the two of them. “Back then, when you... and her... were taking care of me. Was it mainly you who was taking care of me?” Elio asked as his eyes settled on Hannya again as he crossed his arms in front of his chest.

━ make you beg for it, plead for it, until you feel like you breathe for it ━ HANNYA DROPPED HER HEAD to one side, only by an inch, curiosity ruling as she stared at Elio. “I don’t gotta make myself feel better, darlin’,” Her smirk was cruel. Hannya didn’t often feel guilt, and if she did, it was usually Dolly’s residual feelings leaking through. She enjoyed that Elio was dependent on her, that his only weakness was Hannya. “S’true. Ya look good. Like you’ve got it under control. You became a man without me, sweet baby,” He’d always be hers, though, and Hannya wouldn’t let him forget it.
It was clear as she grabbed his face, forcing Elio to look at her, focus on her, though that had to be what he was always doing, wasn’t it?
Was he… sad about that other body? Really? She felt it wash over him more than she could read it on his face, quirking a brow as her own irritation grew stronger. What did he need her for? Was she any better than Hannya? No. He’d mostly known Hannya, anyway, and surely that had made his life much better.
‘I’m here for you. I’ve been looking for you.’
Aw, he was just the sweetest. Pleased by his reaction, knowing he couldn’t keep himself from her for long and having proven it, she grinned wide━like a predator about to catch its prey between its teeth. Elio moved in, and Hannya gladly accepted him, arms sliding around her boy and pressing him to her chest. She released him easily when he wanted, hands gliding down his arms to gently take Elio’s hands in her own.
He began to grow irritated again. Elio didn’t glare or start to get hateful like she thought he might; he simply crossed his arms, and Hannya let go of his hands to ensure his movement could be carried through. He seemed to want space between them, a gap, perhaps protection through folding his limbs over his chest. Hannya wasn’t inclined to give it.
“Yes. It ain’t like I’d let the human take control most of the time,” Hannya laughed as though it was a terribly silly notion on its own. Elio wouldn’t really know that, though, would he? It was all him in there. “I’m your mama, baby, no matter what shell I’m wearin’ or how long I’m gone for. Now how ‘bout we getcha a drink and relax a bit, hm? Sound nice?” Purring her words, she reached up to touch his arm and began to lead him away, to the bar, eager━despite how human it sounded━to reconnect with her son.
