Anyway, it was more for fun now than anything else, ‘cause who even knew if Lex was gonna get his inheritance anymore. His dad wanted to start grooming him to take over, but that shit was kinda hard when Lex wasn’t even at home.
And he didn’t miss it. He was having way more fucking fun in Mystic Falls, and screw all of them for making him want to leave.
So, on top of all that fun, he was gonna mess with Hawthorne junior━‘cause why the hell not? It just so happens they were in Mystic Falls at the same time, and Lex knew all their dirty laundry━so he’d definitely start taunting Adam with it.
First appearing through Adam’s earbuds, the music crackled and sputtered like some old-timey record player before Lex’s voice rang out━he felt like the caller in Scream. “Heeeey, Wonder Boy.” Snickering, Lex made his voice just a little too loud, “You can hear me, right? Yeah, I know you can,” And then the volume dropped again. “Don’t freak out ‘cause everybody’s gonna think you’re crazy. Do your mom and dad know which school you’re at right now?”

Adam's day had started like any other ━ there was still underlying tension from having lied to his dad for so long and sometimes, it grabbed him from the neck and squeezed, so tightly he could barely even breathe. He wanted to fix things, but he lacked knowledge of how to do so. It was his fault for lying for as long as he had, he knew that much. Adam's lips parted to let out a small sigh, his eyes lifting to scan his surroundings as he seemed to snap out of his thoughts just on time for class to be dismissed.
Adam pushed himself up from his seat and started making his way out of the classroom along with the other students. He had his book hugged close to his chest as he kept mostly to himself. Now that he had a free period to do whatever he wanted, he pulled his phone out and placed his earbuds inside his ears. He clicked on 'Spotify' and played one of his most recent playlists just to keep his head in check, he didn't want to wander off deep into his thoughts because he worried he'd never actually resurface if he did that.
Adam buried his phone inside his pocket along with his hands and continued walking down the corridors, hoping to reach the end, so he could step outside for a bit to clear his mind, but he ultimately stopped in his tracks when his music started glitching, making him cringe slightly at the unpleasant sound that resembled a dying record player. "No, don't do this to me, c'mon..." Adam thought it was just his earbuds dying on him, but it was much more sinister than that, as a man's voice emitted from his earbuds. His brows furrowed in his confusion as he looked around him, wondering if it was just someone talking next to him, but he could've sworn it was emitting from his earbuds. Adam pulled his phone out to stop the music, but the voice still continued. "What━?" There was something about the other's voice that made anxiety awaken in the pit of his stomach, his lips parting and closing as he looked around him to see if anyone else could hear this, if anyone could help him. He received odd looks from other students, and the voice came back again, making him gulp past the lump in his throat. How did he even know about this? "Who is this? If this is some sort of prank, this really isn't funny. How do you even know━?" About my parents and about me? He had so many questions circling in his head all at once, but he wasn't sure he'd be able to receive an answer for any of them.

“What, didja think it was you screwing up your phone’s music instead?” Lex cackled, akin to how Johnny Depp laughed in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory━except more pitchy and annoying. “It’s not a prank, dumbass. And I know lotsa stuff, so just keep listening and stop being annoying, huh? Hey, y’know what, maybe━” Pausing for a moment, he focused until he appeared on Adam’s phone screen, all bright whitish-blue and muffling his face behind the tones of colour, making everything a little hazy. He looked like a face━mostly━just without all the substantial parts that made someone human. Lex could see Adam perfectly fine, though, and smirked up at him.
“That’s better. Okay, for starters, how the fuck do you mess with the lights and shit when you’re not even a psychic? You know what that is, right? A psychic? Since you go to this weird-ass school?” That was a significant discovery for him on its own, this supposed school like some sorta weird teen movie, like Sky High or some shit. All Lex really knew about was psychics, thinking they were the only things on the planet, but he guessed it kinda made sense that they weren’t. But Adam’s family━as far as Lex knew━weren’t psychics unless they hid it really well.

Adam's lips parted and closed a few times when the voice coming from his phone seemed to see right through him. "Uhm━ maybe..." Adam admitted, his voice now showcasing some embarrassment as he eyed his surroundings warily before his attention settled back on his phone. "You're kinda━" Adam paused what he was about to say as he watched the screen suddenly turn bright to the point where he had to squint his eyes. As his eyes adjusted to the bright light, he could see someone, but he couldn't see his face clearly. It somehow made the whole experience a lot scarier seeing the other person like this.

"I, um..." Did Adam suddenly lose his ability to speak? Adam gulped harshly past the lump in his throat, unable to hide the fact that he was actually scared shitless right now. "It's kind of, um..." Adam bit down on his bottom lip to stop himself from talking when he noticed the fact that his voice came out a little too shaky. "I know what a psychic is, I'm not that." Adam pointed out as he scratched the back of his neck sheepishly. "Also, the school isn't weird. You're kinda mean if I'm being honest." God, he sounded like such a pussy talking like that. Adam wanted to show that he wasn't affected by the man, but it was already too clear on his face that he was scared.
Adam's lips parted and closed uselessly for a few moments. "If you wanted to know what I was, you really didn't h━have to do all of this. I'm a special child, according to the school? I'm n━not calling myself special, I promise. It's just what we're called in the uh, lore, thing." Adam pointed out as he bit down on his bottom lip worriedly. "Is this━ is this all, sir?"

He wasn’t a psychic? Lex had almost expected Adam to say he didn’t know what they were. So if he wasn’t a psychic, then what the hell was he?

Before all the essential questions got answered, Lex was sputtering out loud laughter at Adam and how stupid he continued to be. Seriously, he was like a little kid, so Lex talked to him like one. Putting on a baby voice, he sneered, “Aww, did I hurt your feelings?” And snorted a laugh. God, was this guy for real? “Dude, if I’m being honest, you being such a little bitch kinda makes me feel better about myself. Like, are you gonna cry right now?” He cackled sharply. It was almost like smacking Adam with his own arm and going Why’re ya hitting yourself? Why’re ya hitting yourself? Why’re ya hitting yourself?
Wait, what the hell was a special child? Lex made a mental note to rummage through the school’s files later. He didn’t want his confusion to be known, though, so he kept chattering. Special? Like you take the short bus to school?” He teased, incredibly mean-spirited, and motioned from his mouth upwards. “Like… elevator doesn’t go all the way up to the penthouse?” Lex almost doubled over from laughing at his own joke. He thought he was hilarious.
“Hold up━did you just call me sir?” He halted suddenly, then let another laugh bubble up and out. “That’s crazy, man. I almost feel bad for you━why’re you so nice and shit?” Lex said the word as if it was dirty and disgusting, and, truthfully, it almost turned his stomach to think about how this kid got through life.
“Okay, so back to the special child shit. So you’re not a psychic but you can do psychic shit. Is it just electrical shit? And you’re not the only special child, huh? Kinda defeats the purpose of them bein’ special, but whatever.”

Adam bit down on his bottom lip when the other continued to pick on him. Was he really that easy to pick on? The other's words were sharp as knives as they continuously hit him again and again, creating one deep wound after the other but he refused to give the other the satisfaction of seeing him cry. "No, I'm not gonna cry!" Adam looked around him, offering a sheepish smile to the students when they looked at him like he had suddenly grown a third eye or something. He awkwardly waved and turned around to continue walking. "Well, sir, I'm glad that I'm making you feel better about yourself." Adam mumbled instead of telling the other off. Great thinking, Adam.
Adam's eyes widened slightly at the other's words before he let out a chuckle at his joke even though it wasn't that funny but Adam didn't want to embarrass the other by not laughing. "Uhm, sir, you kinda have the humor of a preschooler, it's kinda funny, actually. But no, not that kind of special. It's just what we are called, I guess?"
"Oh, uh, yeah... I did? I didn't want to be rude to you or anything like that." Adam justified himself with a shrug of his shoulders following. Just because the stranger was rude to him doesn't mean he should act the same way. "Why am I nice? Um, my parents raised me this way? Look, sir, maybe you're just having a bad day and you're taking it out on me... I'm here if you wanna talk about it? You could come over to my house and we can have a meal together if you want? We can be friends, you, um, you don't have to be so... mean, I guess."
"Oh, um, no, no, it's not just electrical. I can kind of, uh, mind control people? But it's only for a limited amount of time and it gives me the worst headache, so I rarely do it. I'm also like, uh, super strong?" Adam explained before he released a soft chuckle as he nodded his head in agreement. "Yeah, I'm not the only one. I only know this because we were kinda all slaughtered by this demon? Kind of a long story, very painful, do not recommend it." Adam subconsciously rubbed the front of his throat. "Do you, um, have any other questions? This is like the most intimidating way anyone has asked me about my powers, not gonna lie."

He almost had a clap back going━you have the humour of a preschooler━but then it turned into another compliment. Adam was clearly incapable of being an asshole, even when it was deserved. Yo, not even that━he had no backbone.
“I don’t wanna come to your fuckin’ house for a God damn tea party, man!” Lex shouted, cackling, his body gyrating with the full-body laughs, still within the parameters of Adam’s phone screen. “I ain’t havin’ a bad day. I just wanna fuck with you ‘cause you’re weird, and your dad and his fuckin’ company suck.” He rolled his eyes, though he knew Adam wouldn’t see it, as his face was still mostly hidden from view. “Also, I’m not being mean, dude. Some people just aren’t little bitches like you are.”
Lex scoffed at first, though it turned into a bigger kind of condescending laughter at the mention of super strength. “Really? Good thing you can Hulk Out, dude, honestly. You’re gonna need some kinda protection. I bet you get your ass kicked a lot just for bein’ an easy target, huh?” Lex was pretty lanky himself, but that was why it was better to pick on Adam this way━with one of his strengths.
A demon? Seriously? Maybe this guy was a little fucking crazy. “Slaughtered? Bro, you’re trynna tell me you came back to life after dying via demon?” His laugh was incredulous━a little bewildered, honestly. He’d meant to fuck with Adam a little more, but this new info was kinda freaky. Like, he wanted to deny the existence of some Biblical shit, but what leg did he have to stand on? He was a freakin’ psychic, Adam was a ‘special child,’ so why couldn’t there be… literal demons? He tried not to seem too surprised, though.
“Good. It’s supposedta be intimidating, kid. Tell me more about this demon shit. You get special powers when you come back to life, or what?” Was that why he went to this weirdo school? “So, like, do your parents not know you’re a freak? Is that why you’re hiding this school from them?”

Adam released a soft ‘oh’ when the other turned down his offer, rather cruelly. “That’s — That’s fine, then. No worries.” He said over the sound of the other’s laughter, though he had no doubt that the sound of his cackling laughter had easily drowned the sound of his voice since he’d spoken too quietly. Adam’s eyes widened slightly at the mention of his dad and his company. “Wait, wait— Uh, sir? You know my dad? What happened?” Adam hurriedly asked with a frown of confusion tugging at his features as he glanced down at his phone. “Oh… I see.” Adam cleared his throat, trying not to showcase how hurt he was to be called that. Man, that guy was cruel, wasn’t he?
The sound of the guy’s condescending laughter was enough to make him want to shrink on himself, his features twisting into one of discomfort at his words because it brought back unpleasant memories that he had to blink out of to dismiss. “Well, uhm, kinda? It was mainly in high school, though. Not here, though. People are nicer here.” Adam revealed with a quick shrug of his shoulders following. “I’ve never had to hulk out, though. Violence is never the answer, y’know?”
Adam wondered if he was giving away too much, but it was already too late to take it all back, anyway. “Yup! Isn’t that crazy? He was kinda, uh, raising the devil, too. Like, actual Satan.” Adam chuckled before momentarily wondering if that made him sound like a maniac so he decided to stop laughing about it as he instead cleared his throat.
“Oh, no, no. Not when I came back. My powers were always kinda, uh, there?” Adam revealed with a quick shrug of his shoulders following, his eyes focused on his phone even though he couldn’t see much. “Wow, sir, uhm, you know a lot, huh? Um. Yeah. They don’t know about my powers. I guess I don’t wanna shatter their world by saying too much. I wanna protect them, Sir.” Adam said with a quick nod of his head following even though the other couldn’t see him. "Sir, can I ask you a quick question? Why do you do this? The whole hacking thing, I mean... Do you do it because you enjoy it?"

“That’s wild, man. You better not be lying to me.” Lex muttered, though he’d do some research himself. If Adam was this willing to word-vomit this info, surely other people had told their friends━hopefully through text, too, so Lex could easily collect the info. Maybe he’d even send Winter over to read Adam’s history, get details and whatever, plus prove whether or not he was lying.
But he’d always had his powers? That was crazy. Lex figured that’s why they called them special children and not special teenagers, though.
“Shitty way of protectin’ them, man. Like, what if Actual Satan comes back and goes after them, huh? Then they won’t know how to defend themselves. Seems pretty selfish to me.” Smirking, Lex watched Adam nod, then stutter out a question of his own.
“Duuude,” He snorted, “We’re not friends, don’t try to ‘get to know me’ or whatever. I do it ‘cause I’m good at it, like you should pummel people ‘cause, apparently, you’re good at that. Also, yeah, ‘course I fuckin’ enjoy it. Who wouldn’t enjoy calling up little bitches like you to make ‘em cry?” Lex scoffed, though he bristled and panicked when he heard Winter coming through the hotel room door.
“Shit,” He cursed, glaring at the screen though Adam still couldn’t see him. “Alright, I’m goin’, but this ain’t over, kid. Sleep with one eye open and shit.” Lex laughed loudly, though he purposely made it so it wasn’t clear whether or not he was joking. Quickly, he ended the call and thought about, like, the Devil and stuff.
