The grief and guilt was overwhelming, to the point it was almost crushing him. He’d mourned the loss of people before, seen countless people get shot or blown up whilst working in the military, but there was no light at the end of the tunnel for this loss. This couldn’t be explained away by telling himself it was just part of the job. Reminding himself that he signed up to join the military and with that came inevitable death. He thought he’d left all that behind when he was discharged, but apparently not. He was left asking himself every single day why did Remzi kill Katie? The sweet kind girl he met at school was now dead because of his brother’s need to feed on people. Remzi had no answer to Raik’s questions either. His face was void of emotion as Raik cried over Katie’s body, almost like he didn’t care. Perhaps it was time to pack his bags and head back home, without his brother. Showering his parents with more lies about their youngest but at least Raik would be away from it all. He packed his belongings soon after Katie was killed and moved to another room in the hotel, unable to spend another second in the presence of his sibling. A single room, no brother on the other side. For the first time in a year, he was alone. Remzi had truly gone off the rails and even Raik couldn’t bring him back this time. In spite of everything, there was still something keeping him tethered to his brother. He wanted to turn around and leave him behind, but he couldn’t. They promised each other since they were children that they’d always look out for one another. If he made his way back home there was a chance Remzi would follow as well. Back to their parent's house and cause even more mayhem and destruction or worse do something he couldn’t come back from. Raik left his room just before dusk, head down as he walked in case he bumped into Remzi as he was leaving the hotel. The job at Campbell’s bar was enough to keep him distracted for now. Painting a fake smile on his face every day as he made small talk with the locals. He’d never been in a face serving job before and until this point, he was enjoying it, but it was hard to pretend to be happy. In the military when they lost someone they could take comfort in one another. Grief was shared among the group but now there was no one for him to share it with. He slipped on his coat as soon as he stepped out of the hotel, ready for another painstaking shift at the bar. A few hours to ignore everything that was going on. He zipped his coat up as he started to walk through the streets of Mystic Falls. Once he was far enough from the hotel he lifted his head up a little as he strolled along the sidewalk, hands deep in his pockets and his face expressionless until he spotted a blonde heading towards him. The same blonde vampire he’d met a few months ago in Campbell’s bar and threw a sea of questions at her, desperate for answers about a daylight ring. He still felt bad about cornering her in the alleyway. “Hey” He announced as he drew closer to her, “I didn’t realize you lived here as well” Having not seen her since that day he assumed she was one of the tourist passing through, possibly going to that secret bar for vampires that slipped out of Remzi’s mouth one night. ━ sorry can't save me now. i'm not okay i feel so scattered ━
EVER since turning, Danielle hadn't been the same. It was like the old Danielle had died, metaphorically of course. And it sucked more than anyone would ever know. Becoming a vampire had ruined everything she had worked for. Either way, she was damn good at her job and no one and nothing was going to tell her otherwise. Whether she liked it or not, she had to deal with her own trauma and guilt. How it managed to twist her into unrecognizable pieces, all jagged edges. It was no wonder how many ended up cutting themselves on the sharpness of her... and it was all because of that damn demon and vampire. But it was more than that, turning into a vampire had changed her forever, mainly the constant thirst for blood that she couldn't exactly ignore. The more stressed she became, the harder it was to control her urges.
That had been years ago though and it seemed like more than a few years ago, it felt more like a lifetime had passed since her time in the bureau, since she was human. This year she would have been turning 31, alongside of her twin brother which was an entirely other ordeal. Her other half, her twin brother, was alive. He was breathing, and she couldn't be any happier about that. However, despite her twin brother being alive again, she could shake how she was feeling. This sense of... dread that washed over her like a cold blanket. Maybe it was the fact that she was a vampire, maybe it was the fact that she craved human blood. Or maybe it was the fact that she didn't know who she was anymore. Hell, Danielle didn't know anything anymore.
She just felt so incredibly lost.
Although she tried to hide it as best as she could. One thing Danielle hated was being called weak, or even appearing as such. Much like Brooke, she had a tough exterior that made it difficult for people to approach her, or even get to know her. It was entirely intentional, too many people had gotten hurt in her life and she just couldn't afford anyone else to fall prey to her disaster of a life. But no matter what she did, it seemed that people just kept getting hurt. That was never her intention, but that was just how things turned out, like she was a walking bad-luck charm. How comical.
It was a brisk winter evening as she walked along the streets of town, no destination in particular in mind. It was her day off and Luke had practically begged her not to come in, to take some time to just breathe. Easier said than done, being alone in her thoughts was much worse than being overworked. Danielle would much rather be at work, but she knew deep down that Luke was right. Even if she didn't want to admit it. 'Hey,' She heard a voice in front of her which caused her to snap out of her thoughts. In front of her was that human who had bombarded her a while back with questions about his newly turned vampire brother. God she really wasn't in the mood for twenty questions. Hopefully everything worked out with him and his brother, but knowing how vampires were, how they seemed to break everything they touched... it was unlikely.
Pulling her hood down, Danielle swept her newly dyed brown hair over her back as to get it off her shoulders as she neared the guy. 'I didn’t realize you lived here as well,' he said to her as they both stopped a few feet from one another. "Yeah, I live in town. How, uh, how did everything work out with your brother?" She asked, slightly curious herself whether or not there were another bloodthirsty vampire running around town or if his brother had learned how to control himself. The last thing this town needed was an out of control vampire running loose, then again, what else would she expect from a town with mystic in its name?

The brothers had fought before. Stupid little arguments, like over who won a board game or most recently who owed who money (it was always Remzi owing Raik for things). It was his brother that had dragged him out here on this stupid road trip, promising some quality bonding time but it had fallen apart in the end. Raik hated Remzi for what he did, to the point where he was convinced there was no turning back on this. There was no forgiveness. How could he? There was no forgiveness to give anyway, his brother had yet to ask for it. Not a single sorry had slipped out of his mouth since that evening. There was no trace of emotion in his younger sibling and Raik just couldn’t understand why. So many questions raced through his head every day. It was giving him a headache and keeping him up half the night, as he tossed and turned, reliving that moment. Holding Katie’s body, trying to stop the bleeding, yelling at Remzi for help. Soon the questions turned back on himself, asking himself whether there was anything he could have done differently. Maybe he spent too long choosing between which bagels to get for the pair or maybe he shouldn’t have engaged in small talk with the cashier. It was impossible to know how long Katie had been laying there though before Raik rushed through the door with a smile on his face, excited to spend the morning with his first love. Rekindling a relationship he thought was dead in the water and long gone. Raik was filled with joy when he received that text from Katie. There had been a few fleeting relationships here and there since then, but none of them compared to her. She was special to him, but now she was gone. As children, the brothers would engage in the whole tit for tat, but there was no room for that here. Raik wasn’t exactly going to travel up to Detroit to kill Remzi’s ex-girlfriend. There would be a long list of girls for him to choose from. It wouldn’t compare though. Remzi didn’t love those girls the way Raik loved Katie. His heart ached, even more, when he received a text message from his mom that morning asking how things were going with Katie. Even his mom was excited about the pair. He didn’t text back though, unable to type out yet another lie to his mom. This one was bigger than any he had told before, yet despite what Remzi had done Raik would still lie for him. Still trying to protect his younger brother even though he had gone too far to be saved now. Raik saw the look on his brother’s face that morning, it wasn’t a look he’d ever seen before. Everything about him was so void and empty. Raik couldn’t help but feel he had failed his brother yet again. Failed to save Remzi from himself, as he plunged into this reckless behaviour that had serious consequences. More serious than falling in with the wrong crowd and waking up in a hospital bed after overdosing. How, uh, how did everything work out with your brother?"Raik let out a nervous laugh, as he nibbled at his lower lip. More lies could slip out of his mouth, telling the other vampire everything was fine. “He got a daylight ring” He wished his brother had never sourced one, allowing him to feed on people day and night. Before Raik knew Remzi was back in the motel room, waiting for sunset, but now he had no idea where his sibling was. “He’s being a bit weird lately though… acting out of character” He used that term lightly. Remzi embodied the meaning of chaos and recklessness, but this was a little too much even for him. “I don’t know how to explain it but it’s like he doesn’t care about anything. Like, he doesn’t even care about me” That last part hurt to say because the brothers vowed to stick together through everything, but now Remzi didn’t give a shit about Raik. DANIELLE COLLIER

DANIELLE tilted her head in confusion as the guy laughed nervously at her question, which was innocent enough, but by the way he reacted to it she could tell something had happened. Maybe something happened to his brother? Or maybe his brother had done something to someone else? God, the last thing this town needed was another rapid vampire running loose, especially ones who were lucky enough to get a daylight ring, which weren't easy to come by. Thankfully she had managed to get her hands on one, otherwise her life would have been a hell lot more depressing if she had to be a slave to the shadows. But even though daylight rings are a blessing to some, those on the other end of a vampire's fangs may not think so. Some vampires were even more dangerous during the day and if they had the freedom to roam about during the day and night, it could cause more problems than it was worth.
'He got a daylight ring.' Well, at least this guy's brother got a hold of one. But she was beginning to get the impression that the guy was hoping his brother never got a daylight ring. It was actually sounding a lot like he regretted helping his brother get one. "Isn't that a good thing?" She questioned, not really understanding why he was so bummed out about his brother getting his hands on a daylight ring. That should have been a good thing considering their last interaction when he practically bombarded her with question after question about vampires. But there had to be more to this story that he wasn't letting on quite yet. Had to be with how he was acting.
'He’s being a bit weird lately though… acting out of character. I don’t know how to explain it but it’s like he doesn’t care about anything. Like, he doesn’t even care about me.' And there it was, the explanation she had been waiting on. Danielle knew right away why he was acting so weird about his brother getting a daylight ring, especially now that she knew what she did. "It sounds a lot like your brother turned off his humanity. That would explain why he is acting our of character and doesn't seem to care about you." She explained sympathetically. This couldn't be easy for the guy if his brother turned off his humanity.
Seeing how the guy was acting, she knew now that she could never turn off her humanity, because she didn't want her own brother to act like this guy was - so defeated. So unnerving because of the unknown he faced with his brother not caring about anything in the world anymore now that his humanity was shut off. Danielle couldn't ever do this to Cory, to turn off her emotions completely as to shut herself off from her twin. The two had been through so much together and for him to be alive again, she didn't want anything to jeopardize her time with him as it was so incredibly precious now that she had him back in her life again. Of course, their time together had always been precious, but the moments they shared were even more so now that he had been brought back to life and in her life again.

He didn’t want to unload his problems on this poor woman. She’d already pinned him up against a wall before warning him about his actions, which did scare him. The strength was impressive, but also intimidating. She could snap him in half if she wanted. The first time Remzi came at him he only managed to subdue him using his military training and sheer luck. Looking back he now realised that he was about to be Remzi’s meal. If his brother came at him again he wasn’t sure if he could stop him. Luckily his brother had yet to make a dive for his neck, but as time ticked on the possibility of being a Remzi’s meal grew each day. He trusted his brother, but not this version of him. Some dead vacated thing that was killing people with no remorse. Every day he woke up wishing he followed his brother to the party and stopped all this from happening. He shared some blame for everything that had unfolded thereafter for letting Remzi stumbled off to some party despite being trashed. Raik didn’t even know his brother had a daylight ring until he saw him strolling around at midday, bold as anything. No burning skin or dashing off into the shadows. What could he say to the woman though? Yeah, it was a good thing at first, but now his brother was there tearing everyone and anyone apart, probably having the time of his life. Just like he did with Katie. Raik didn’t want to say those words out loud, instead, he shrugged in response with a low hum in his throat. He tried not to think about Katie, knowing her parents were probably sitting at home waiting for their lovely daughter to return home from their trip, filled with excitement after being reunited with her first love. As soon as he saw her step off the bus his heart melted. All those feelings he felt before rushed to the surface and the past was suddenly forgotten. They were even planning a second trip together, but now she was dead. He was too scared to ask Remzi what he’d done with the body but he was even more scared to think her disappearance would be linked back to him. He didn’t even have Remzi to compel them this time round. "It sounds a lot like your brother turned off his humanity. That would explain why he is acting out of character and doesn't seem to care about you." Immediately he frowned, “His what?” His humanity? “As in the human part of him?” But he wasn’t even human? At least that was the conclusion he had jumped to when his brother died and grew fangs overnights. DANIELLE COLLIER

━ sorry can't save me now. i'm not okay i feel so scattered ━
DANIELLE remembered the last time the two had met. He had asked her every question possible about vampires, because his brother had apparently been turned into one. She couldn't deny that she felt bad for him. The poor guy was just trying to find out every possible bit of information that could help his brother and she related to that way too much. She was just like him, willing to do whatever was necessary to help her brother, even if it meant putting herself in danger. Cory was everything to her, meant the world to her. She would put her life on the line to protect her twin brother. Now that he was back in her life, she wouldn't ever let him go again. Whatever she had to do to make sure Cory was safe... she would do, no matter the cost, no matter what it took. She wouldn't lose him again. She couldn't emotionally or physically handle going through that loss again. If she did... she knew it would cripple her entirely. It wasn't something she would ever be able to recover from.
Not that she would want to at that point.
Upon her telling him about the humanity switch and how his brother probably had it turned off, he frowned almost immediately. 'His what?” His humanity? As in the human part of him?' Danielle nodded, "His humanity, the human side of him. The part of him that makes him, well, him. Emotionally speaking. Without his humanity turned off he doesn't feel anything for anyone. He's numb if you will and if that's the case, you probably want to steer clear of him. Vampires with their emotions turned off are dangerous and have zero regard for human life. It's all about survival." She explained as she looked at Raik sympathetically. If his brother had his humanity off, it would take a lot for him to switch it back on, if he ever did that is. Vampires who turned their humanity off did so for a reason and getting them to turn it back on would take a lot of coaxing and persuasion. Thankfully she hadn't ever turned her humanity off, but there were times she had gotten close to doing so and if she ever lost Cory... guarantee that she would shut it all off and not feel a damn thing.
"My advice? Don't go near your brother right now if his humanity is off. Vampires tend to turn their emotions off for a reason. It'll take a lot for you to get him to turn it back on, but in order to do that, you'll need to appeal to his human side. What makes him him if that makes sense." It wasn't much advice, but she didn't really want to see Raik die at the hands of his brother. That wouldn't be helpful to anybody and she really didn't want to have to try and track down his brother and end up if he continued killing people. That was the last thing the department needed. The last thing this town needed if she were being quite honest. But she hoped it wouldn't get to that. She wanted Raik to help his brother, yes, but she also didn't want to see him harmed either. Whatever he decided to do... she just hoped he was careful doing it.

He wasn’t sure if her explanation made him feel worse or better about the situation. He’d spent days telling himself that Remzi wasn’t capable of murdering someone they knew, someone Raik cared about, but then there was a time he told himself that Remzi wasn’t capable of murder full stop. A time before everything fell apart. He’d give anything to rewind time, back to when Remzi was human and the brothers were happy together. Cruising across the country, windows down with the wind rushing through the car as Remzi is struggling to follow Google maps and giving the wrong instructions. In the moment, it was frustrating when his brother was yelling at him to turn at the very last second, leaving Raik yelling back that it was too late to turn and they’d miss the junction. He longed to be back in the car with Remzi sitting alongside him. No matter what happened though he would still love his brother. Remzi could rip through the town, killing everyone he saw and Raik would still love Remzi. It hurt because he could see the side of his brother that no one else knew. He wasn’t a bad person, just someone who was trying to find their way in life. His life hadn’t been as successful as Raik’s and he’d overcome many obstacles that Raik had never faced. Obstacles that Raik should have been there to help his brother navigate. If only Raik never joined the military they would have never been where they were today. Her words fell on deaf ears though. How could he steer clear of Remzi when it was clear he needed his older brother? “But… surely he feels something for his family?” For Raik? Dani repeated the same advice though. Avoid his brother. “He has no reason to turn his emotions off.” He insisted, but the realisation then hit him hard. There was a chance Remzi switched it all off because of what happened on Halloween. He couldn’t bear to entertain the idea that maybe this was his fault and Katie’s blood was now on his hands. “I… I’m guessing it’s not as easy as asking him to turn it back on?” He was cautious not to overwhelm Dani with questions, again, but he was struggling to process the information. Appeal to Remzi’s human side? But his brother wasn’t human anymore? “I think all of this is my fault.” He spoke quietly, a slight crack in his voice as he started to think about arguing with Remzi on Halloween. DANIELLE COLLIER - wrap up with yours?
