During the day he was thankful for the quiet streets of Mystic Falls. Fewer bodies surrounded him, making him feel uneasy. The area was simple enough to navigate without leaving him feeling overwhelmed and lost. It was a good choice going from chaos to peace. From overcrowded conditions to ample greenery, with crisp clear air. He even had a bedroom to himself for the first time in his life. He’d gone from sharing his space with his younger brother to sharing with scary hardened criminals. The type that rummages through your stuff as soon as you step through the gates, looking for contraband to steal. By the time he was done serving his time Mikey looked like one of those hardened criminals, but he never stole from the new kids walking through the door. If anything he tried to help them ease into prison life, having been in their position once before. He was careful not to let the newbies get overly familiar with him. He didn’t need some youngster following him around like a lost puppy, hoping he would provide some level of protection because he wouldn’t. They needed to take a few punches. It was character building after all. The nighttime had him on edge. Virtually silence bar the odd noise here and there. However, it was getting better as Mikey was growing accustomed to his new surroundings. Drifting off into a restful night's sleep, usually dreamless. Sheer blackness for a few hours. The next step was to sleep through to his alarm which rang through the bedroom at 8 am, giving him enough time to drag himself out of bed to see his probation officer. His own personal babysitter was allocated to him by the government. Mikey still hadn’t dialled any of the numbers of potential jobs handed to him by his probation officer. He didn’t want to be bombarded with questions about his past. So, every morning when he saw his probation officer he lied about calling the numbers she gave to him. He lay still in the darkness, staring at the ceiling which he could just about make out with the light that seeped through the blinds. Waiting to drift off whenever his body told him it was time to sleep. He closed his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath before hearing a clunk in the kitchen. Mikey’s eyes opened as he shuffled himself up in bed, listening carefully. The noise was certainly coming from inside the apartment. He told himself it was probably Chase getting something as he tried to settle back into the pillow. He couldn’t relax. He needed to check to make sure it was Chase, otherwise his mind would run away with ideas that someone was outside waiting for him in the dark. Quietly he slipped out of bed, sitting on the edge of the bed as he pulled a pair of sweatpants on. He got to his feet, carefully making his way over to the bedroom door. Mikey listened carefully. There was definitely someone in the kitchen. He reached for the shirt hanging off the wardrobe, throwing it on, the front unbuttoned. His left hand rested on the doorknob as the nails on his right hand grew into sharp claws. The only perk of being a kanima. He opened the door, as quietly as possible, stepping out into the hallway. Mikey walked down the hallway, his right hand behind his back, ready to swipe at any moment. The door to the kitchen was ajar, illuminated by the light from the fridge. “Chase?” He called out before pushing the door open. Immediately he frowned,] “... Roxana?” His right hand remained behind his back as the claws started to retract, “What’re you doin’ here?”ROXANNE BRASCHI

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ROXXI HAD NEARLY CHEWED her nails to the quick in Chase’s bed. He was warm and soft while settled into his bed, sleeping like a log as most men did. Not Mikey, though. She could still hear his heart beating, and it was much too fast to be the chest-thumping of a man at rest. She wondered if he could hear her heart, too.
It was easy to ignore his presence while she was busy with Chase━while he was awake━and she’d managed to tire him out but not herself. It was useless now, laying there thinking. The Agnellis seemed to be closing in, and with each passing day she worried more and more, wondering if she was keeping Chase safe by staying close or putting him in further danger. It’d always been the latter, but she’d fooled herself with the former. Now Mikey would know she was seeing his brother, and all her actions were coming full circle, closing in on her so tight she thought she might suffocate.
Right, that was it. She couldn’t do this anymore. If it wasn’t her family, it was the fact that she was growing feelings for Chase when this was meant to be nothing of the sort. At first, she’d run from him, but then she couldn’t get away for long enough, and now she was sitting with a foot in each camp. Constant contradictions, typical stupid bullshit, it was going to make her head fucking explode.
She did hesitate before crawling out of bed, though. Roxxi admired his sleeping face one last time, deciding if she was really going to split. She was getting up now, right? So she should be going. One kiss pressed to the battered bridge of his nose━as if Roxxi could heal all Georgie’s damage that way━and she was on her feet, slipping back into her clothes. She didn’t look at him while she rushed out of his bedroom, hearing nothing now except the rush of blood in her own ears. Roxxi lingered between the doorway to the kitchen and the entrance, though, delaying the inevitable by heading for the fridge. Bent over and peering into it, her hair and eyes illuminated by its light, she tried to talk herself out of leaving. They wouldn’t change Chase like they had Luke; they’d destroy him. She wanted to protect him, save him, but she’d barely escaped by the skin of her teeth, and she was family.
‘Chase?’
Tilting her chin heavenward, Roxxi started begging. Dio, perché mi torturi in questo modo? So di non essere senza peccato, ma per favore risparmiami. Solo per stanotte. Ah, but you reap what you sow, and Roxxi had made all the wrong decisions purposefully. They all led her here.
The fridge’s light brightened dangerously for just one moment as she breathed, trying to work through this. Straightening her back just in time to see the realization spread across Mikey’s face, Roxxi feigned surprise. Lying directly after praying for help? She really had strayed. “Mikey?” She squeaked, knowing he could hear her whisper without much straining. “I’m… I was staying over with Chase. What are you doing here?” Taking a moment to pause, to let him see the realization on her face, too, Roxxi’s eyes blew wide as she motioned to him. “Oh, merda. You’re the brother?” The brother who’d roped them all together even before she’d reached this country.

Mikey had no choice but to settle in Mystic Falls. When he stepped out of the gates his options were very limited. He could have gone to his parents, but he didn’t want to face that rejection if they didn’t let him in. It had been so long since he’d actually seen them in person, they may no longer recognize their son. Apparently, the phone calls were easier than visiting, according to his dad. His mom couldn’t face seeing Mikey locked up for so long. As though they had failed him as parents. They hadn’t though. Look at Chase. Mikey failed them as a son, bringing trouble to their door constantly. They could have tossed him aside years ago, but they never completely severed their connection. His second option was a halfway house. Mikey would rather stick pins in his eyes than live in one of those. So to Mystic Falls, it was. His brother was taking good care of him anyway and providing him with the support he needed to keep on the right side of the law. Mikey wasn’t sure how safe they were in Mystic Falls though. He still wasn’t convinced by Chase’s story in the hospital, his mind telling him it was something more than that, but he had to trust his brother. Chase said they were safe so Mikey told himself it was true. There was still a nagging feeling deep inside they weren’t, but what could he do? He couldn’t exactly pack up his belongings and leave town. Realistically, would he ever feel safe again? Obviously, it was going to be Chase in the kitchen. The two lived in an apartment, so unless someone climbed the wall outside. He didn’t hear anyone come through the front door. Yet he couldn’t relax until he checked. Just to make sure so he could slide back into bed and stare at the ceiling for a few more hours until morning came. No wonder some of the ex-convicts turn to drink once they get out, to drown the memories out and catch some sleep. Roxana looked just as shocked to see him. “Are you breakin’ in?” He asked in a low voice as he closed the kitchen door quietly. To steal what? Their food? Then she told him she was staying over with Chase. His brother. It took a moment for the sentence to register with him. “What? What do you mean you’re here with Chase?” He was praying the two hadn't slept with the same woman. Of course the first woman he has sex with falls into bed with his younger brother. “Wait… you ‘n’ Chase?” Were they a thing? Oh fuck. “Are you the woman he’s been goin’ on dates with?” He exclaimed, still trying to keep his tone quiet. Chase had mentioned a woman he’d been seeing, but never delved into the details with Mikey. He kept it very vague, saying it was early days for the pair. ROXANNE BRASCHI

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ SURELY, MIKEY HEARD HER heartbeat fluttering in her chest. Roxxi was pretty sure she was having a panic attack, and it was only growing worse the longer they stood there. Mikey was going to tell Chase and then Chase was going to get upset that she’d left and then she’d have to make up some sort of lie to get him to forgive her because God knows she wouldn’t be able to give him up. And then…
What the fuck was wrong with her?
Mikey closed the kitchen door━so they could talk without waking Chase, she figured━but it made her feel trapped and claustrophobic. Wasn’t he supposed to be the one feeling like this? Wasn’t Mikey[ the reason they were in this mess?
Good thing her real nerves lent to the fake surprise of finding him here. He probably thought she was stalking him or something, slipping into his apartment to climb into bed with him later. Honestly, Roxxi couldn’t decide if that was worse than the truth or not.
“Yes, I’m breaking into your lavish apartment.” She muttered, rolling her eyes before the long, thick pause, waiting for him to reach the conclusion. Finally, Mikey got there, and Roxxi sighed heavily, shaking her head as if it was just landing for her, as well.
The fact that he knew about her━that Chase had told his brother about her━shouldn’t have made Roxxi so giddy. Her cheeks felt hot, a smile tugging up at her lips before it was quickly wiped away. No, she was being stupid━it was a bad thing Chase had told Mikey about her, and it was a bad thing that they were crossing paths now.
“Yes.” She puffed, taking a small step towards him and closing the fridge door behind her. “I didn’t start seeing him until after I met you, and obviously I had no idea. Please do me a favour and don’t tell him? Not yet, anyway, not so soon after what happened.” When Nemo happened, and Chase was laid up in the hospital while surely both of them were overcome with worry. Roxxi closed the distance with a few more strides and laid her hand on Mikey’s arm, “He doesn’t need more stress. We’ll tell him later, capisci?” Her smile was gentle, almost pleading, and she squeezed his bicep lightly before moving around him and going for the kitchen door.
“I do like him, I just… I have to go.” She sighed and, instead of quitting while she was ahead, added, “It’s not you, I already wanted to leave.” And perhaps she shouldn’t have admitted that much, but Roxxi was dressed in clothes she clearly wouldn’t sleep in and had her purse in hand, ready to go.
Before she could change her mind, Roxxi flashed Mikey a sad smile over her shoulder and scurried out both doors, though her heart never stopped its erratic pace. That was awful━all of it, from seeing Mikey to abandoning Chase in the middle of the night. All she wanted was for Chase to give her up for good, to throw his hands in the air and tell her he couldn’t do it anymore━as if she’d been awful to him at any point before this. It was just hurtful, wasn’t it? Like she was trying to break his heart.

Never had Chase and Mikey been interested in the same woman, but then they had only been back in each other's lives for all of five seconds after spending so long apart. Although they did once send a valentines day card to the same girl in the neighbourhood but only because she was considered ‘cool’. Mikey thought it would boost his reputation with the gang if she said yes and who knew what was going through Chase’s mind. It didn’t matter anyway, because she didn’t respond to either of them and by the following week they’d forgotten about her. Since then there hadn’t been a moment they found themselves fancying the same person, until now. Mikey had no idea what he felt towards Roxana. She’d been there for him during the full moon and helped him when he had no one else to turn to. Maybe the gratitude he felt towards her had spiralled into him liking her. If he was twenty years younger he may have run away with that idea, but now he tried not to put too much thought into it. He couldn’t allow himself to latch onto the first woman who approached him straight out of prison, especially given she was standing in Chase’s kitchen telling him that she and Chase are something. Now she was telling him not to tell Chase, “Um…” It hadn’t been the first time he’d lied to his sibling, but all that was behind him now. That was the old Mikey. The one who stood back and watched his brother get beaten up. The person who lied to his parents every single night about where he was going, “Okay.” He found himself mumbling with a short nod. She was right, Chase didn’t need more stress in his life after what happened. “But we gotta tell him soon.” But how soon was soon? Tomorrow? Next week? He couldn’t stand around listening to Chase speak of the new woman in his life knowing full well he’d been there already. It would tumble out of his mouth sooner or later, Then she dropped the second bomb. She liked Chase. “Right…” He muttered, watching as she collected her purse, insisting she was leaving anyway. A flickered of tension in his body as she reached forward and squeezed his bicep. The same hands that had been on his body once before, except with passion. The same hands that had been exploring Chase. Once the door shut behind her Mikey stood in the kitchen for a few seconds, in silence, thinking about what the hell just happened. Why did it hurt a little when she said she liked Chase? Fuck. He sighed softly, pressing his fingers into either side of his temple. He paced around the kitchen for a while, like he would often do in his cell when he couldn’t sleep until he finally left the kitchen, strolling back towards his bedroom knowing there would no sleep for him. He paused outside of Chase’s bedroom, tapping lightly on the door before pushing it open. His eyes adjusted the dark and he could just about make out his brother’s figure in bed. “Chase…” He waited until Chase stirred a little, “That woman has left by the way… y’know the brunette one with the… I’m goin’ bed.” He clicked the bedroom door closed before returning to his own bed. ******** He had broken pieces of sleep throughout the night, but now he lay in bed wide awake staring at the ceiling for what felt like the millionth time. He pulled himself out of bed, throwing on whatever clothes were scattered across the floor. He made his way into the kitchen, taking a moment when he entered to remember the night before. Roxana and Chase. “Fuck.” He muttered to himself as he sat down at the table, resting his arms on the table as the door to the kitchen. “Morning.” Mikey glanced over towards Chase. “So. I met your mysterious woman last night.” Well, not for the first time, but he promised Roxana he would keep quiet about that. For now. ROXANNE BRASCHI & CHASE BUCKLEY - over to ange

Sleep shouldn’t have come as sound as it did these days. Nemo was still out there somewhere, either under a rock somewhere in the foulest corner of town, or back in Emiliano’s lair in New Orleans, whines like a chastised puppy rising into those raging screams as delusions bit again. He wasn’t here though, sticking himself back under his nose, finally back to something resembling its normal grizzled lines months after Nemo had broken it again, or under Mikey’s, sending his brother snarling and fighting the way Agnelli had probably hoped he would. The seeming quiet hadn’t left him sitting on his ass though, out on the streets of Mystic Falls every day Chase felt like he’d been in some constant state of watchfulness, just waiting for that moment, when his life would blow up again. Last night he’d shuffled into the apartment with Roxxi, finger to her lips before he’d pressed his own there to keep the noise from dragging Mikey out of bed. There was telling his brother about this woman who’d fed him to busting, whose mouth could have had Lucifer himself blushing and there was shoving it under his nose when the guy had spent twenty years without a woman in touching distance. He wasn’t gonna be asshole about it but the day was coming when those dinners were gonna end up here, the three of them around the kitchen table with candles flickering and some decent beer and pizza on the table. A day when those looks he snuck when he thought Roxxi wasn’t looking were gonna spill into stuff tripping out of his mouth in the clumsy poetry sorta way she had tripping through his brain. Chase had eased over her when she’d slipped under, curled into him like he was the radiator beneath the covers not her, dragging his phone back to his side of the bed to set his alarm – work wasn’t gonna slide away cause he had someone to tug him back into that hot pocket. Forbes wouldn’t care about that, just about the pile of files building up on his desk while his family agenda had taken front stage. His arm had slipped around her, drawing her back into his chest to press a kiss to that tender little spot behind her ear before he’d fallen asleep too. Most nights he dreamed now – the wheel wrenching itself out of his hands as the car had slid sideways, the yelp of the dog that always had his heart lodging itself up in his throat (what kinda fucking sicko would hurt an animal?), the sick snap of bone and dull thud of fists. Dark doorways and stoops, blood drying on his skin to flake away under the shower, ruby runnels of water rolling down over his feet as he’d shook with adrenalin and confusion. Not last night though, with Roxxi there he’d gone into that dark like a rock into water. Drifting down, still and hidden in all that black under light had sparkled again. Burying his face in the pillow, one arm crawling across the tangled, cold sheets, Chase swatted for his phone alarm for the other. In the dark of his bedroom it was still, no quiet trill of the alarm. ’Chase…’ What? He grunted, turning his head just far enough to catch sight of Mikey outlined in the doorway, the hall behind him barely lit. There was enough light though, enough to see that Roxxi wasn’t in bed anymore. No clothes on the chair in the corner of the room, no lingering warmth like she’d just slipped out to the bathroom. Just that quiet confirmation from Mikey that the brunette – like there was more than one woman sharing his bed – had gone. ”Fuck.” The curse slipped out quietly as he flopped onto his back to squint up at the ceiling. His palm pressed flat against the sheets where she’d been, the frown cutting deeper into his brow. What the hell, Roxxi. * * * * * * * * * * Time jumpy * * * * * * * * * * Forget getting back to sleep in any sorta meaningful way. He’d spent most of the night laying there in the dark, wondering why she’d gone without a word of explanation – not even the full on bullshit excuse of having to teach next morning. Half an hour before the alarm started to buzz Chase had slipped out of bed. A quick shower, dressing in that semi-dark in his room, the quiet pad out to the kitchen cause Mikey hadn’t come crawling out of his room yet – probably hiding out til he’d gone to work and there was no chance of him sulking ‘round the place, maybe. He had toast cooking and coffee dripping into the pot when his brother finally emerged. The curse on his lips like a greeting until the real one came. Chase hitched brows but shoved a second cup into the machine all the same as he sipped from his. ”Mornin’.” No good about it really, especially not when Mikey brought Roxxi up again. ”You said last night,” he crabbed tiredly. ”Roxxi tell you why she was heading out? You know, since it was kinda unexpected. Thought maybe you’d finally end up meetin’ over breakfast. Finally breaking toast you know?” Like she was actually slipping into his life instead of balking at the last minute, slipping back in after with a kiss and some glib comment. His jaw tightened, his posture going stiff as he heard a sound at the door. Like nothing had happened. Fuck indeed.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ALRIGHT, SO BY THE time she arrived home, Roxxi realized she was being stupid. Her bed didn’t feel as comfortable without Chase beside her━the revelation was horrifying━and it didn’t feel right wrapping around her pillow when she could’ve easily been clinging to him. She’d fucked up. It was too late to turn around and back out of this thing with Chase, so she may as well enjoy it… until it all crashed and burned.
In any case, it wasn’t his fault, and he didn’t deserve to feel so shitty about it just because Roxxi couldn’t make up her mind. Her working sink taunted her when she flipped on the faucet to get some water━it wouldn’t be leak-free without him. He did things for Roxxi, and all she offered in return were blue balls and an empty bed.
She couldn’t sleep the rest of the night.
She’d written out half a dozen versions of the same bullshit text message but didn’t send any of them. Little excuses for why she left━none of them true or even believable━but at least there’d be something.
In the end, Roxxi decided it would be nicer to come back. Chase probably hadn’t woken up at all during the night, and she’d arrive with breakfast, and all would be forgiven. Sure. Yes. That made sense. (Like one of the reasons she liked him so much didn’t exist anymore━Chase wasn’t a fucking idiot.)
Stopping by some cutesy, small breakfast shop just as they opened, Roxxi picked up three egg sandwiches on bagels, two sausage and one bacon, and three coffees. She and Mikey would keep their promise to each other and not say anything, and it would be a nice ‘first meeting’ over breakfast. She convinced herself that everything was fine the entire way back to Chase’s apartment.
She heard them as she slipped through the door, heading right to the kitchen and trying not to be sheepish as she moved head first through the threshold, popping in like she was interrupting. Not like this was planned. If Mikey could hear her heart thundering nervously in her chest, he hoped he’d keep that to himself.
“Morning!” Roxxi chimed, raising the grease-spotted bag of food in one hand and the tray of drinks in the other. “I thought I’d pop out to grab us some breakfast, you know that bagel place that just opened in the square that I have been dying to try…” The end of her sentence trailed off, consumed by tension even as she’d laid the items on the table. Roxxi stayed stuck by the kitchen door, stomach knotting, a realization washing over her that it wouldn’t be this easy to fix what she’d done━not this time.
“You told him?” She turned her accusatory glare at Mikey. Frustrated, uncomfortable and irritated that she had to deal with the consequences of her actions, Roxxi let out a loud groan and shook her hands in the air wildly. “For fuck’s sake, Mikey, did prison teach you nothing about being a snitch?!” She snapped, balling her hands up into fists and forgetting that neither of them had told her that little Mikey-factoid.

He wasn’t one to get himself in other people's lives. If he spotted a neighbour kissing goodbye to someone who wasn’t her husband he didn’t give a shit, but whatever the fuck was going with Roxana and Chase involved him. Unfortunately. He knew Mystic Falls was small, but this was too much. The woman who helped to lock him up every full moon was lying in bed with his brother. He watched as his brother slipped another cup into the machine as Mikey bit down on his tongue gently. Soon. She said she would tell him soon, so he was prepared to give her some time to come clean to Chase. Technically, they’d done nothing wrong. It wasn’t as if she was hoping in bed with Mikey one night and then Chase the next. At first, he was a little thrown off when Chase referred to her as Roxxi. “Um… no not really. I think she said something about… a family emergency.” It was the only lie he could think of that sounded plausible. Now he was sitting praying that she wasn’t some orphan who had no family. Fuck. He hated this but tried to shake it off and pretend everything was okay, but his body stiffened up again once he heard the door open, then close again. He predicted it was her before she walked through the kitchen door. Her heart was racing just as fast as his. His eyes ticked up at her as she placed the bagels and coffees down on the table, her tone bright and cheerful as if there was no tension in the air. Chase seemed irked that his woman dipped out in the middle of the night and Mikey was trying his best not to wear his emotions on his face. His eyes fell down on the food for a second before Roxxi spoke again, throwing her words at him. “I— What?” He’d barely said good morning to his brother before she came bursting through the door wearing a huge grin. “For fuck’s sake, Mikey, did prison teach you nothing about being a snitch?!” His gaze darted straight at his brother, with a deep frown on his face. “You told her?” He exclaimed as he got to his feet, the chair legs scraping along the floor loudly, “You can’t just go around tellin’ people I went to prison. You know I gotta keep a low profile ‘ere.” That was his story to tell, not Chase’s. One word to the wrong person could have the Agnellis flocking to town for him or even the neighbours starting some crazy petition to have him removed from town. He’d heard stories about ex-criminals moving to small places like this only to be forced out a few months later after everyone found out they’d served time. “What else have you told her?” Did he tell her about the Agnellis or Georgie? Did he tell her how Mikey did jackshit when Chase got beaten up? Or how disappointed their parents were with Mikey? The dread he felt before had been replaced with anger. His secret was out thanks to his brother and Roxxi had probably run home to type Mikey’s name in Google. A part of him wanted to defend himself, explain to her that he wasn’t the person painted out by the press, but someone who lost his way in life. He wasn’t a thug or a violent criminal like they said. He was just a kid trying to fit in. ROXANNE BRASCHI & CHASE BUCKLEY - over to ange

Once was just a thing, you know, it happened, you laughed, you moved on. Twice, now that had you looking again, that thought twisting in your brain and your gut with a painful little tug. Third time and you knew something was wrong. Chase felt that knot pull tight when he walked out into the kitchen and Roxxi wasn’t there either – like Mikey had been wrong and it was just some momentary blip in the night that was all gonna be explained this morning in a way that would blast away any doubts. Something was rotten in the state of Virginia and he just didn’t wanna see it.
Christ.
He wanted to grind the heels of his palms into his eyes as he stood at the counter, wanting to work something loose in his brain to have this all fitting right in his head. Didn’t work, wouldn’t until he had all the evidence in place, his brain just wasn’t built that way. Chase dropped them, brewed up the coffee for him, the one for Mikey while his brother dropped Roxxi’s excuse into place for her. ‘A family thing’. Not that he really knew much about her family, the conversations that way definitely being one sided. He’d pulled little bits of himself out for her, stories of when he and Mikey had been kids, telling her about his dad, the way he’d learned by watching over his shoulder … how things had slid a little later, although he wasn’t about to tell her about what his brother had gone through, that wasn’t his story to tell and Mikey was putting all that behind him now.
Chase nodded as he passed the coffee off to Mikey, his eyes barely lifting to meet his brother’s. Maybe she’d call later, slap that band on over the phone as she told him about some maiden aunt who’d fallen and broken a hip or something. ”I guess that’s a story I’ll get later, you know, when she gets a chance.” Toast in the toaster forgotten as he told Mikey about how he’d thought they’d finally meet, he’d sunk down at the table. He stiffened as the door finally opened then. Not a major emergency then, he guessed, no reason to twist his gut up out of guilt cause he’d taken all that ‘I don’t talk to them anymore’ as a reason to mentally call bullshit on what Roxxi had told him.
Brows furrowed faintly, Chase slumped back in his chair, fingers curled around his coffee cup, thumb moving restlessly over the side of it as Roxxi appeared in the kitchen doorway. The smell of food rolling off of the bag she held in one hand, the better smell of store made coffee overlaying the bitter smell of what came out of his own machine. All brightness and light, her voice practically chirpy until it drifted off. ”Hey,” Chase managed tightly. He swallowed, the bitterness of the coffee joined by a thin thread of bile as Roxxi’s story clashed nastily with Mikey’s. ”I guess there musta been one hell of a queue. You were up early.” It didn’t take the muttered words for Roxxi to be talking over him, the accusation tossed at Mikey with an edge that hadn’t been there seconds before.
Like he’d faded into the background it was suddenly verbal warfare between Roxxi and Mikey, people who were supposed to have shared little more than a single sentence the night before. Another twist in his gut, that pang shooting up into his chest. What the fuck. ”Hey.” The single word did nothing to stop Roxxi’s words from driving all that hurt that musta been sat like a bubble in Mikey’s stomach since the cell door had first slammed on him, growing and growing outta shame until it burst now.
Chase’s brows furrowed, the coffee cup rattling on the table as he shoved it away from himself. Coffee slopped over the edge, his head tilting up as Mikey pushed to his feet. Brows rising, Chase jabbed a finger on the table, then at Roxxi. ”You think that’s pillow talk for me man? I’m gonna go round tellin’ everybody my brother’s big dark secret? What kinda brother do you think I am, man?” He’d wanted nothing more than Mikey to be able to move on. Mystic Falls was a fresh start, nobody here looking at Mikey like he was about to pull a gun and rob them too, wondering just how long it was before he brought Emiliano’s shitty Eye of Sauron down on them. ”No, I didn’t fuckin’ tell her …” Which meant... Throat going tight, Chase looked up at Roxxi with that doubt growing in his own gut.
He pushed back slowly, tiredly, like he was just coming off of a triple shift instead of having what was meant to be the first big breakfast with his brother and his girl. Muscles bunched, jumped in his jaw as he eyed her. Roxxi had done some digging of her own. It was so damn easy picturing the professor in her office, googling that pulp faced guy who’d hit on her at the comic store, filing away all those dirty details of a life that had taken just as many knocks as his face. Finding out about Mikey. ”You get the whole story?” he asked tightly. ”Or did you just read what they put out there and thought huh, you know, maybe they both got bashed around a little, that’s kinda hot.” He wasn’t a partaker but he knew there were enough twisted up people out there who found the badge or the orange jumpsuit kinda appealing. But Roxxi hadn’t … when work had called she’d bolted. ”Why’d you go?” His voice was tighter now, like the question was gonna choke him. It hadn’t been to get breakfast and it hadn’t been cause Aunt Maria had tripped over her tea cup Yorkie and couldn’t get up again.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ OH, FUCK. SHE WAS DEEP IN IT NOW.
Had Mikey really never… her mind ticked back through the dozens of conversations during full moons, when her anchor━his fucking brother━began to work spottily, and realized that he hadn’t. Chase didn’t, either, which would’ve been better to bet on━you know, if she would’ve thought it through. If she hadn’t, Chase would be wondering why it’d come out between them during a two-minute conversation the night before.
She didn’t know which revelation was worse. Actually, yes, she did, and she’d much rather Chase know she slept with his brother before they got together than her lineage.
Apparently, Mikey hadn’t told Chase much of anything about Roxxi━which was great, but put her directly in the line of fire. Her angry expression retreated quickly, replaced by shock and immediate regret.
“Fuck off.” Roxxi spat the words first, without thought (as usual for her, except when she carefully held back pieces of herself from Chase). She hated the accusation—as if spending her whole life believing he was the story's true hero and that Mikey had fallen victim to her family was for naught. As if she’d ripped from her own blood and destroyed that piece of herself just for it to seem like she’d given no effort. Roxxi knew it was too sharp, especially when she was the one at fault, but she didn’t offer an apology or even a moment’s hesitation. She just kept barrelling on, though her eyes twinkled with tears and she wasn’t sure if it was the anger, the allegation, or that she actually knew everything. Maybe it was the pain that blossomed in her chest when she realized Chase immediately gave her a way out—an excuse—so that she wouldn’t be revealed as the monster she truly was.
“The whole story. Enough to know you…” Her eyes ticked to Mikey, then back to Chase. “… Both of you were caught in a shitty situation. And that you pulled yourself out of it.” She smiled softly, proudly, perhaps divulging a little too much, but this was what she’d always wanted to tell him—that he was her fucking hero from the moment she found out. “And that I wanted to see you again. Dio; you can’t blame a girl for looking up the guy she keeps running into, especially when his newest photo online has to be from a year ago.” Roxxi snorted, trying to be playful for a second, but the sheepish expression crept in again. “You always tell me I should lock my door more, that this town isn’t so quiet and safe. I didn’t think I’d Google your name and get a bunch of news articles about you and your brother.” But it didn’t bother her; she wanted him to know that.
But why did she leave? Because she was part of the family that destroyed their lives and couldn’t stand to lie to him anymore? Because she liked him so much that it put her in pain to keep doing this? Roxxi thought about lying (clearly Mikey hadn’t said anything), rattling off more bullshit that’d likely have Chase giving up on her. But she couldn’t anymore, not when she was finally faced with this decision. Perhaps this was better━having to look him dead in the eyes and say it━as sneaking back in would’ve allowed her to make the decision mentally, and who knows whether or not she would’ve stuck to that.
“I was being stupid.” Roxxi mumbled, staring down at her hands and feeling so out of place. She often drifted through a room like she was the only person there, or at least the only one invited, and now she felt… wrong. Maybe she should’ve stayed away. “Can we talk about it later?” Her eyes glanced to Mikey again, hoping Chase would understand, but then she wondered why it was assumed she could even stay.
Because if she didn’t stand her ground now, she’d likely disappear from his life for good (in this form, at least). Decide she didn’t have the nerve to keep doing this and take herself out of the equation; keep protecting him otherwise, but not doing this anymore.
That day in her kitchen proved how easily she could fall into domesticity with Chase. How Roxxi could forget herself, who she really was to him, and keep playing house forever. Just because he was someone she looked up to didn’t mean she thought they’d ever meet, much less get along so well that (for the first time since high school), she found herself thinking about her future with someone else, and what that might entail.
“Please eat something, guys,” She spoke to both of them this time, motioning to the paper bag on the table, relying (just like her mother) on food to make her feel better. Roxxi couldn’t stomach anything at the moment, but if it was appropriate, she would’ve grabbed a pan and started cooking like it’d do anything to ease the tension swimming through her━or the room.

Mikey felt a pang of guilt as soon as he threw accusations at his brother in the midst of the moment. Of course, Chase didn’t tell Roxxi. Chase spent his childhood hiding Mikey’s secrets from his parents so he wasn’t going to let this one slip (even though it was barely a secret). His brother was the only person he could trust, one hundred percent. Fuck, he didn’t even snitch on Mikey when he climbed through the bedroom window with a stab wound. He didn’t even say anything when the gang beat the shit out of him, landing him in hospital. His dad knew his sons were lying about what had happened and spent hours yelling at Mikey. The blame and guilt were painted on so thick by Chase’s bloody and broken face and his dad telling Mikey that he was the older one. He was supposed to protect his little brother at all costs, which he’d failed to do. On countless occasions. Chase’s lips were forever sealed with Mikey’s secrets, only parting to allow lies to seep out of his mouth to their parents. Their parents didn’t believe the lies either, but neither of them would crack. If gossip of Mikey’s location fed back to the gang Chase’s head would also be on the chopping block. Mikey first, but the Agnellis would probably go after Chase as well, just for the sake of it. They’d do anything to twist that knife in a little bit further, hitting Mikey where it hurts. They could have sent Chase home that evening after a beating for spying on them but instead, they dragged him along for the ride to make an example of the two. In Roxxi’s defence, there was no way she’d have known Mikey’s name when they first met. The pair didn’t exchange names until months later. After their bizarre encounter in the woods. He pushed his tongue to the top of his mouth, slowly calming down as his brother jumped to his defence but Roxxi bit back instantly. Her voice matched the tension that had been building in the room. This was the part he hated more than anything. A person telling him they’d read about what happened and formed some kind of sympathetic opinion of him. The prison guards sometimes did it, but it was the counsellors who were the worst. “You don’t know the whole story. You’ve read whatever the fuck is written online which is…” Bullshit? He’d read some of the stories and most of them reported did report the facts of what happened, but they always painted Mikey to be some kind of thug, “Just because I fucked up it doesn’t mean my brother did too. He had nothin’ to do with it, at all.” A little white lie, but he didn’t want her knowing Chase was there that evening. Now wasn’t the time or place to tell Chase about what happened between him and Roxxi. It was probably enough to push him over the edge and kick her out of his apartment. He glanced down at the bagels on the table, with zero desire to eat anything but reached forward and grabbed one anyway. “I’m gonna go for a walk.” He mumbled, his gaze flicking between the pair before landing on Roxxi, “I’ll leave you guys to talk.” Giving Roxxi the chance to let slip the truth about what had happened between the two, knowing she would probably back out. With a bagel in his right hand, he left the kitchen, heading for the door to leave the apartment. ROXANNE BRASCHI & CHASE BUCKLEY

The feeling of a knife in the back shouldn’t have been unfamiliar to either Buckley brother by now. Emiliano and his boys had jabbed one deep enough into Mikey to wreck decades of his life. The cops had a word for it now, PC as hell, but pretty on the nose. Life changing injuries. That had been what they’d done to his big brother. What Roxxi had done? That wasn’t quite on the same level. Chase could still feel it though, that prick of a knife tip in a heart that had gone more than a little tender for her.
He curled a hand over his chest, rubbing, like he could somehow massage it away. There’d been looks when he’d joined the PD in New Orleans, people who knew the exact sequence of events in that bodega. They hadn’t had any of the context that had led up to Mikey following Georgie into the place, but it hadn’t mattered. Guilt was guilt and until he’d proved that he wasn’t his brother there’d been those looks – narrowed eyed suspicion, the inability to believe that the same brush hadn’t tarred both brothers.
Maybe it was a little cowardly, but he hadn’t wanted to see that same look in Roxxi’s eyes. He’d met her a world away from all of that, in a new life where Mikey was supposed to be able to escape from that past and not carry on being Chase Buckley’s criminal big brother. Now it was all out in the open, spread on the breakfast table like the damn bagels that just felt like a gloss of bullshit on whatever had happened during the night.
Chase’s head ticked back and forwards, a faint burn behind his eyes matching the one in his chest. A faint snort as Roxxi told him to fuck off. Nah. He was the one with the blade twisting in him now, he wasn’t gonna take it, not from someone he’d thought was better than that. His fingers curled, nails biting into the skin beneath the t-shirt, tiny red crescents burning into his skin to join the scars their ‘shitty situation’, as Roxxi was now putting it, had already put on him. ”Not the whole story,” Chase said hoarsely. He met her eye for a second as her gaze ticked to him and then looked away, his mouth pursed as she tried to make this better. His throat went tight as Mikey went to defend him. ”They didn’t report the whole of any of it.” Mikey had been used by the Agnellis, tossed to the jackals when Emiliano’s own screw up son had ended up bleeding out on a bodega floor because he was a fuck up, like all of them.
Fuck. Why’d she have to smile when his eyes were locked on her mouth, expecting to see more of that outrage, not the pride that started the blade sliding out again. A warmth glowing over that nick in his heart like she was gonna heal it with just a couple of words. How much of a fucking sap had he turned into? ”The guy she keeps runnin’ into, who didn’t deserve a little privacy?” OK, maybe that was a low blow. Chase licked his lips, forcing his eyes up to hers. He’d told her to protect her, cause that feeling didn’t stop buzzing in that primitive bit of his brain and Nemo, that fucking lying snake Emiliano had sent after him, could curl around her throat and bite her just because he knew just who’d feel that pain then. ”I’m a cop, Roxxi. We try and protect people. I woulda told anybody …” His hand left his chest, scrubbed over his face as he frowned. What kind of cop was he that he hadn’t done the same with her? The kind that trusted. Foolishly perhaps.
He’d seen what he wanted to, hadn’t he? A stunning woman who didn’t recoil from him like he was about to grab her purse or assault her, like he really was the brute his face made him out to be. Maybe he should’ve known it was too good to be true. Roxxi had read what the newspapers portrayed him and Mikey to be, that was the guy she’d gotten all hot under the collar over, that was the guy she’d slipped out on last night with another lie. She couldn’t even look him in the eye as she came up with her excuse.
Lips pressed together, Chase wondered if he was gonna puke up the couple of mouthfuls of coffee he’d drunk, they were definitely curdling in his stomach. He glanced away, met Mikey’s eye and then looked down at his fingers where they rested on the edge of the table. Thick fingers, short nails – not bitten, he wouldn’t allow the nerves to get that bad – scarred at the joints. ”Stupid?” he echoed, a touch of that strained humour at the edge of it. Like she was admitting it had been a mistake. Chase hung his head, pressed his shoulder blades back into the slats of the back of the chair. She was looking at Mikey now, like he was the one who was gonna say yeah or no to this.
Slowly, at her urging, Chase shifted in his seat. Mikey was already reaching for the bag, snagging one of the bagels and pushing back from the table like this was the one thing he had the power to run from now. ”Mikey,” Chase croaked, ready to call his brother back. ”You don’t have to…” Go. Like he was about to kick Roxxi out and shut the door on her, the two Buckley boys sticking together. Mikey was out instead, that label of ‘criminal’ slapped on his back again because Roxxi hadn’t known to leave it all well enough alone.
”We’re not done with this,” Chase said hoarsely when they were alone. He tugged the bag towards him, the nausea still swimming in his gut stealing any appetite he’d had. ”He’s not part of that world anymore, OK? I don’t want you pryin’ into any of that with him.” She could pick at him, he could take it, but Mikey was off limits. He hadn’t invited Roxxi into their lives, or into his heart … that was all on him. Chase lifted out one of the breakfast bagels, picking a piece off the edge just to force something down his throat, like it would remove that lump lodged there.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ALL ROXXI WANTED WAS TO GRAB HIS CHEEKS AND SAY, “BUT I do know the whole story, I do, and I’m so proud of you for it. I know you went through so much because it was forced on you━both of you━and you’ve remained my hero since that day. I want to protect you, I’d lay down and die for you, you used to be the only thing that kept me from losing myself or turning on full moons. It’s you, Chase, it’s you and that whole Goddamn story my uncle wove for you. I know it like the back of my hand because I lived it, too.” But she couldn’t, wouldn’t, and she’d have to live with the fact that he’d hate her for this━for lying and sneaking around. For not telling him what she knew, never asking about it, just allowing it to bark out of her mouth when she was trapped in a corner.
He wouldn’t accept any of it anyway. Not as a half-truth and not as the full truth. He didn’t believe that she knew the full story, that she shared a name with the perpetrators, and that’s the way it had to remain. Roxxi gritted her teeth and blinked away the clouds in her eyes, furrowing her brow when he said he wanted privacy. He wanted her in every way under the sun; he wanted her to share his bed and stay there until morning; he wanted her to meet his fucking brother… but she couldn’t Google his name? Whatever, he was upset, she could get over that━but the next excuse? That he was a cop? That she meant nothing, the advice was given to anybody who bothered to listen?
Why was he allowed to hurt her now? Roxxi’s hand jumped up to dash a tear away, wondering when this had switched so suddenly. She had been the one to avoid wounding him, bending over backwards to keep him out of harm's way, but now Chase claimed that she didn’t matter? “Okay.” Her voice was little more than a croak, feeling that familiar pain in her throat. It was like a tense strain, threatening to rip right through the skin and take her heart with it.
Okay, I understand.
Okay, I don’t mean any more to you than some random civilian.
Okay, I won’t stay next time. I won’t even come back. I won’t be here.
Selfishly, it seemed like the best way around this. But she couldn’t━it wasn’t fair. He liked her, he wanted to be with her. She wasn’t built to lie down and take this; she never had been. Even before his influence. And she’d dealt with so much to get to this point with him, so she wouldn’t let him go now. Fuck Chase Buckley, he wasn’t fucking going anywhere.
“Stupid.” Roxxi repeated sternly, still clenching her teeth together so she wouldn’t snap at him. Her excuse wasn’t simple or idiotic or even lacklustre; she didn’t want to admit it, didn’t want to turn around on her decision now and start really doing this with him━come Emiliano or high water━but it felt like she was forced into a split-second decision. One where she was a moment away from having him or losing him. This was what she got for waiting.
Chase deserved someone better, nicer. A woman who didn’t share blood with the people who’d ruined his family━but that was just it. Her family was torn apart by the same people; it was their kinship, in that way, that brought them together.
Mikey escaped this, and she wondered what it was like to step out of the thick tension and be able to breathe again. She wanted to breathe in Chase, wanted to go to him and press into that broad, strong chest, let him wrap his arms around her and kiss her head and make this go away. She didn’t want the hardship that came with this conversation, the walking-on-eggshells she’d already managed to fuck up, but that was all Chase wanted. And she knew she couldn’t deny him.
“I know he isn’t. I wasn’t prying.” Roxxi mumbled. Was this a difference between men and women? Roxxi had dozens of friends over the years who scoured social media profiles━Roxxi often did it with them━in search of all available information about whichever man was their focus. Did Chase think it was weird? Did he relate it to his own profession, or was he merely offended that it was his family now? She thought about the day he’d come to fix her sink and wished for that simplicity again.
“I was stupid because I thought I had to leave; I was scared about being… more with you, I guess. I like you, and I don’t feel this way very often. All the shit with your brother didn’t affect the way I…” But it did━it was every reason she tried (and failed) to keep him at arms’ length. Roxxi moved to him, hesitant in her first step and then a rush all at once until she was standing at Chase’s side, taking the hand that’d put a piece of bagel into his mouth. It was so large that it almost couldn’t be covered by both of hers. “I’ll go again. If you want me to.” The words were forced, choked from her throat and not at all what she wanted to say. She wanted to demand his forgiveness, or even that he would just forget about it entirely. “And I don’t have to come back this time. But I wanted to make it better; I wanted to make sure I didn’t lose you because I was being stupid. I shouldn’t have said that to him… I just… well, you know how I am. I can’t stop my mouth when it starts.” Roxxi rolled her eyes playfully, then smiled, though it all bled away once she squeezed his hand and refocused, leaning back on the edge of the table. “I didn’t mean to be rude; I only… I guess I was upset that I couldn’t just change my mind and slip back in when I wanted because Mikey had obviously said something. I know that’s my fault━being mad that I was called on my bullshit.”
This was harder than she’d thought it’d be━admitting she was wrong. Roxxi wanted to stomp her feet and demand he take her at face value, but he’d already bent and twisted himself for her. He put off sex for months, he dealt with her aloofness in the beginning━even still, clearly━and now it was her turn to step up. She thought about pressing in for a kiss like that could cure everything, but held off, staring at him with those big, glassy, doe eyes. “I’m sorry.” She whispered, finally, because her dad always used to say you could fix a lot with an apology. Not centuries worth of generational trauma, but maybe it could be a bandaid for this. For right now.

So much for the fresh start. Mystic Falls was a town where everybody’s nose was in everybody else’s business but nobody here had a clue about the all the shit Mikey had gone through. Maybe Forbes had it in her little black book that his brother had been incarcerated, that would’ve been stamped all over his record, but she could see it for her damn self that he was jumping through every hoop they asked him to. He hadn’t started dealing out of the club or knocking over the local liquor store. The Buckleys were out from under the Agnellis thumb and it was gonna stay that way – with Mikey’s fresh reputation in-fucking-tact.
Ah, why did it have to be her? Fuck. It just made it worse. Roxxi had seen every ugly part of him, every scar impressed on him by years of trying to take the Agnellis down, of trying to clean up the city and she’d let him know that she’d seen the beauty in every damn one of them even when he couldn’t see it. Every ounce of the ugly it really was slid down into the pit of his stomach, swirling around until Chase wanted to throw it up all over the kitchen table.
Hope got you nothing but an extra twist to that knife when it slid in. His parents had hoped that Mikey wouldn’t be found guilty for a murder Georgie had committed, they’d hoped their boy would somehow find his way free of the trouble that’d been dragging him down. Once the Agnellis had got their hooks in him that was all fucking hopeless. If it had been Emiliano’s own son up there on the stand they would’ve twisted the law until he slid free. Mikey wasn’t really his though. No matter how much his little brother had tried to get him free, it hadn’t fucking happened for twenty years … or at all. Roxxi had slid those cuffs back around Mikey’s wrist with a single admission. She already had them around his.
Chase’s eyes met hers and he wanted to fucking curse. That blade was double sided and he was twisting it just as bad now, some little part of him wanting her to feel a little of the pain those bastards had inflicted on his family for more than twenty years. Only the tears she was blinking away were threatening to fall like the blood that’d drip from his fingers as he stabbed her back.
Fuck. Rubbing at his face didn’t stop him from hearing that pained croak to her voice or from seeing her brush a tear away. One that he’d put there.
What the fuck did it say about him that even now, when was hacking away at all that hope he’d been holding on to like the world wasn’t fucking shitty enough to his family that they were never gonna break, that those tears were threatening to take the steam out of his hurt. Roxxi had been stupid, he had been too. So damn trusting that he’d stopped trying to see when the other shoe was going to drop. For that Chase knew he owed his brother an apology. This was on him.
He didn’t blame Mikey for running the hell out. It wasn’t stupid for him to try and escape that slap of a past that had come over what was meant to be a pleasant breakfast, one where he got to share those two parts of his life, safe in the knowledge that neither one was smeared with the Agnelli curse anymore.
Focusing on the bag, on the bagels that were undoubtedly a peace offering, Chase tried to draw the line in the sand. Would it get nudged further out if they got past this? Maybe, but it was gonna be there no matter what, because he’d failed protecting Mikey once, he wasn’t gonna let it happen again. Chase swallowed hard, the bread sticking in his throat as Roxxi mumbled at him. ”You just wanted to know, about me,” he said almost numbly. She’d tumbled down that rabbit hole, silently digging instead of just asking him or trusting what she saw on face value – like he had.
Another chunk of bagel torn free, squeezed practically back to dough between his fingers as the truth really began to pour out. Still excuses, stopped dead in their tracks as she approached. The piece of bagel dropped, the bit he’d eaten feeling like it was wedged somewhere in his chest. ”You coulda told me,” he said hoarsely. ”About all of it. I thought you knew you could speak to me .. about anythin’.” Because he liked her too, and that, that was so fucking rare it had been hard to believe at first. Someone like her, wanting to be around someone like him, those little barbs she tossed out with that wicked edge just jokes to get him laughing, blushing.
Chase’s fingers curled into Roxxi’s as she took his in both of hers. So delicate, so warm, yet capable of sweeping away a shitty day at work in just a single touch. This … this wasn’t so easy to fix. Still, he frowned, his fingers tightening like he could hold her there. Should he be holding her there? God. ”Don’t,” he rasped. ”I didn’t want you to go last night, even with …” The laugh was strained when it emerged, like it was gonna help loosen the lump in his throat. That mouth was what had gotten him in the first place, picking him out of the crowd, slipping under his skin.
Dark eyes rolled up to study her face. Mikey had covered for her, cause he was a decent fucking guy, passing on the truth as he knew it, not throwing the table and those bagels across the damn room when the actual truth rolled out. ”He didn’t call it bullshit when he told me. He trusted what you said, I trusted it …” He trusted her, and maybe that was gonna come back to bite him on the ass now. If she hadn’t brought up Mikey’s being in prison this all woulda melted away by now, leaving maybe just a little sting in his pride. That bullshit had all come to light though and now it was scattered between them like the tattered bagel on the table.
Nodding slowly, Chase held her eye when she finally looked at him again. A fucking world in those glassy eyes – genuine pain, genuine apology, still everything he’d imagined that they mighta ended up with. He swallowed again, the lump loosening this time. ”Accepted.” He gestured towards the door with his other hand before it curled slowly around the back of her thigh. ”He deserves to hear it too. This is … his life he’s tryin’ to make here. Mikey deserves to be able to do that, if you read everythin’, you should believe that too.” The breath rolled out of him long and heavy, his head tilting back slowly. ”This wasn’t the breakfast I expected … the bagels are … good though. You gonna stay?” That question came with a weight, one that would sit like lead in his stomach, tearing a hole right through him if she said yeah now.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ DON’T.
HOPE SWELLED IN HER CHEST WITH A SHARP INHALE, AS IF THE oxygen gathered there was the feeling itself. He wanted her to stay. No, more than that, he wanted her. She was terrified and excited all at once, eager to feel what it was like to be loved properly and by a man with all the traits she admired. All Roxxi had ever wanted was to be like Chase. Even upon hearing stories about him soaked in bias and deceit, where he was painted to be the villain, Roxxi knew the truth━she knew what was right and what was wrong. She hoped she resembled her father in that way━her ancestor, Aronne, too━that she’d carry out a life resembling theirs.
Perhaps what troubled her was the path she’d already begun to take. Building a relationship based on lies wasn’t what her father would do. He was honest and never held his love behind locked doors, only to release it on the odd occasion. He let it flow freely, showering his wife and his children… and all but Roxxi had betrayed him in the end.
But when honesty would drive her and Chase apart, when it’d perhaps put him in more danger, she couldn’t help but hold back. She’d be as truthful as possible now and in the future with Chase; Roxxi couldn’t lose him. This was as close to that as she wanted to get.
“I only told him I had to leave,” She said quietly, “I didn’t ask him to pass along the message. I guess… whatever he said doesn’t matter now.” Roxxi mumbled, finding no reason to debate semantics. “I’m sorry.” She said again, sighing, because it was just another thing to string her up with. Chase wasn’t, though━he was offering forgiveness when Roxxi wasn’t sure she deserved it.
Accepted.
Roxxi began to smile, feeling his warm hand slip around her leg━she nodded quickly, though she’d agree to just about anything now. “I do. I will; I’ll apologize.” Though she doubted Mikey would want to touch her with a ten-foot pole after this. She assumed he’d come slinking back during the next full moon, and she’d say it then. Chase was right, and she wanted nothing more than for them to have long, full lives without Agnelli slime anywhere near them ever again.
She saw him relax, his head lolling back, exposing a bit more of the neck she wanted to get her lips on again. Roxxi slid forward, fitting herself onto Chase’s lap, arms sliding around his shoulders. “Of course I’ll stay.” She mumbled, and she meant it. She’d stay for good, burrowing into Chase’s life and offering anything and everything she could give. Dipping her head to his lips, Roxxi kissed him meaningfully, trying to say more with her mouth than words could ever articulate. They shifted after a long moment, trailing a line down the warmth of his neck until her head tucked in and she was squeezing Chase in her arms.
She’d stay frozen there for a moment, holding him, being held, and then she’d try those delicious fucking breakfast sandwiches.
