Everything had pretty much fallen apart since Halloween. The brothers were barely speaking to one another bar a few texts here and there. They hadn’t even discussed what happened on Halloween, the issue just brushed under the carpet with everything else. A carpet that Raik was terrified to even lift up. He didn’t want to admit to himself that his brother was a killer. Someone who was capable of taking another person's life. But it wasn’t just that which was a wedge between the brothers, it was Remzi’s attitude. He couldn’t place what the hell was wrong with his young brother. Clearly, he had secured himself a daylight ring too as he was out all day and all night, popping home every few days to collect something. They didn’t need to be in Mystic Falls any long and Raik’s purpose had now been served. His mind was screaming at him to go back to Detroit, but it was impossible to turn his back on Remzi. He missed his brother. Raik had even said sorry to Remzi for Halloween. As if it was his fault the two girls were dead. Maybe if he hadn’t snapped Remzi wouldn’t haven’t let leash on them. But Remzi simply didn’t care leaving Raik terrified he had lost his brother forever. There had been someone there to keep his mind occupied. Someone to text good morning to and good night to. His high school sweetheart Katie. His first love, his first everything. His mom basically had her dress picked out for their wedding day, convinced the couple would marry but their life goals got in the way. Mainly Katie’s desire to go to college and move a hundred miles away from Detroit. Within a few days, she suggested heading over Mystic Falls to see him. He didn’t push it too far by suggesting they could share a hotel room together. There was a chance they could pick up where they left off as teenagers. Just seeing her again made his heart skip a beat and butterflies swirl in his stomach. It was a bit of relief when Remzi texted him to say he was in North Carolina, leaving Raik to catch up with his first love. He’d even gone as far as telling his mom Katie had come to visit him. Again, she was picking out her wedding dress. Everything slotted back into place for the two, as though no time had been long between them (at least Raik felt like that). He bit the bullet and suggested they go on a date. Out for dinner somewhere in Mystic Falls. Soon as it hit 8 pm she was tapping on his hotel room door, looking breathtaking. The evening was perfect to the point they woke up the next morning in Raik’s bed. He pulled himself out of bed, promising her he’d be back soon with breakfast. Orange juice, baked goods, fruit. Whatever she wanted, he’d bring it to her. The store was five minutes from the hotel, with the bakery next door. Raik was back riding the elevator up to his floor within 20 minutes. Another few more steps he was at the room door, swiping his keycard to get it. “I didn’t know what to get… so I got one of everything” He announced as he stepped into the room, focusing on sliding his key card back into his jeans pocket. He glanced up, the door closing heavily behind him. Remzi was inside the room, wearing that same look he saw on Halloween in the bathroom, but somehow he looked differently. Unapologetic as Katie lay on the bed, blood seeping out of her neck. “Siktir” Immediately he dropped everything on the floor, running over to the bed. “Remzi, what have you done?” He yelled as he grabbed a towel off the floor to press into her neck with shaky hands, “What have you done?” Rage flooded his voice as tears started to brim in his eyes, “Do something! Give her your blood or something… just… fucking save her”He looked back at his brother, realizing there were just void blank eyes looking back at him REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ TRUTHFULLY, REMZI HADN’T MEANT to snack on Raik’s bitch. He was enjoying the warmth of the sun on his skin after running into Rose the day before, though ‘running into’ wasn’t a good enough explanation. It wasn’t a coincidence, he knew as much without her even having to admit it, and it should’ve rocked him more than it had. Everything was still on the same wave, though. Slow and steady and flat. But no remorse meant no guilt, no more nights or mornings laying in bed like he had with that girl when it’d all changed. He couldn’t worry about it, though━didn’t care enough to. He cared about his next meal.
Which just so happened to be Katie. Upon slipping into the hotel room, she’d looked a little embarrassed, spouting some bullshit about waiting for Raik and Remzi supposedly being in North Carolina. She’d cowered as he’d come closer, and her fear only spurred him on. Her death chalked up to a matter of (forgettable) moments. Remzi certainly would’ve forgotten, too━if he hadn’t gotten caught.
He’d torn into her, ruining Raik’s sheets━or the hotel’s━in the process, and only pulled away in a blur of movement just before the door clicked open and his brother’s voice flooded in. It wasn’t guilt eating at him, or getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar━Remzi was simply finished and licking the rest from his lips, silently wishing humans held more blood. Less than two gallons wasn’t nearly enough to satisfy his appetite for the moment.
‘Remzi, what have you done?’
Raik’s question came twice, the second more irritating than the first. He took a few steps back to allow his brother to move through the space, fruitlessly pressing cloth to her wounds. “Drained her, obviously.” He muttered as though Raik was the inconvenience and turned to walk towards his own bed. “That’s not going to help her, abi. You’re trained in medicine; you should know this.” Remzi snorted, pushing some leftover blood from his cheek into his mouth.
He wanted Remzi to save her? Chuckling at that, though it was a sound clearly void of all humour, Remzi dropped to his bed and lounged as if nothing important was going on. And, to him, nothing was. “Why would I do that?” He snorted, watching Raik freak out like he hadn’t seen literal dead bodies in his lifetime. “She’s dead. If I give her my blood now, she’ll just end up like me. You wouldn’t want that, right?” Sneering, Remzi pulled open his nightstand drawer, rummaging around for anything he might need for the next few days.

There had been so many times that Remzi had gone too far, but every single Raik would forgive him for whatever stupid shit his brother had done. Like the time Remzi ruined Raik’s favourite action figure by throwing it on an open fire to see what would happen. It melted of course and Raik was devastated. After that, he was always careful to keep his favourite toys away from his brother, in fear they would be ruined. That’s what he should have done with Katie. He should have never left her behind in the hotel room, knowing there was a small chance Remzi could come back. He’d lost friends before, out there on the field. He’d even watched one of his best friends get shot. Raik had dealt with death more times than he wished to, but Katie didn’t sign up to the military. She didn’t come to Mystic Falls knowing there was a chance she could be killed. It wasn’t just by anyone though, it was Remzi who had caused this. Obviously he’d drained her. Remzi was speaking to him like this was an everyday occurrence. As though he hadn’t done anything wrong. “Why would you do that?” He yelled, desperately pressing the towel into her neck. “Yeah but you’re a vampire whose blood literally heals people!” He turned back to Remzi, realizing his brother was walking away. He wasn’t even fazed about what was happening. No apology or reasoning. Nothing. She was dead. Raik reached over slightly, pressing his fingers hard into Katie’s neck. No pulse. “No… no…” His voice trailed off, shaking his head as the tears started to spill out of his eyes, “This can’t be happening” None of this felt real, rather some awful nightmare that he was going to wake up from at any second. He lifted his hands from the towel. “How could you?” He looked back at his brother. Remzi had made some bad decisions in his life and hadn’t always been a model member of society, but this was out of character for him. This was unforgivable. The fact Remzi didn’t even care about what he did replace Raik’s feeling of loss with rage. A rage that he’d never felt before against his own flesh and blood. He got to his feet, eyes locked on his brother. “I don’t even know who you are anymore. You’re… you’re a monster” Maybe this whole transition thing had done more than make him immortal, maybe it had changed who he was as a person. Raik made his way round to Remzi’s side of the bed, watching as his brother searched the drawers. He raised his left hand, placing it on Remzi’s shoulder and tugging it hard to turn his brother around to face him. A handprint was left on Remzi’s shoulder from the blood that was still wet on Raik’s hand. “I’ll never forgive you for this” The tears were still hot in his eyes, falling down his face. As quickly as he could he raised his right hand, swinging his fist into Remzi’s cheek. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ LIKE LEAH WHINING IN North Carolina, Raik was being fucking annoying. Remzi was ready to leave as soon as he was done rifling around for anything important, sputtering sarcastic replies whenever Raik said something stupid━like ‘this can’t be happening.’ “Got some shitty news for you, buddy.” He muttered under his breath and then snickered at his own joke, not bothering to look up at Raik until his brother came barrelling over, still pissy about the dead bitch on the bed. Talking shit to Remzi like it mattered, like he cared.
Remzi hadn’t answered Raik’s other question, the how could you, because he didn’t feel like it, and it wasn’t going to be a real response anyway. Raik was trying to pull something out of him that wasn’t there anymore.
‘I don’t even know who you are anymore. You’re… you’re a monster.’
Immediately, he stopped rummaging around and slowly turned his head to look over his shoulder at Raik. Remzi’s face was sombre, as if the words had hit home, and he stared at his brother with those big, blue eyes, appearing truly hurt. After a moment, it all broke, and Remzi scoffed, mumbling, “No fucking shit.” Before going back to the drawers. “I don’t know why you’re so upset; she’s not even that hot.”
He smelt the blood before feeling Raik’s touch. It folded over his shoulder, forcing that wet, sticky sweetness to press his shirt to his skin. Remzi turned willingly, eyes trained on his shoulder instead of listening (or watching) Raik. Hungrily, as if he hadn’t just drained an entire human, Remzi desperately grabbed at the cotton surrounding his shoulder and pulled, trying to get it into his mouth. He had one taste of it before catching the blow, more irritated (that he hadn’t seen it before) than in pain. It barely even moved his head, and Remzi’s eyes were back on Raik in an instant, his mouth trained into a thin line under his beard.
He couldn’t care less that Raik wouldn’t forgive him. What he did care about, though, was his fun running out before it was due, and Remzi would do pretty much anything to stop that. Raik would tell someone if he was angry enough; he’d barely been able to get questioned by the cops even though Remzi had been lying to him the whole time, claiming he hadn’t done a thing. Snatching the bottom of Raik’s jaw in his hand, Remzi straightened his brother’s head and held him steady, leaning in to focus on his eyes. “You don’t have to forgive me, but forget this. Forget I was here, that Katie died in that bed. You’ll clean up the body and scrub the place of evidence, and then you’ll forget any of it happened. Katie came, you had a nice time, and then you dropped her off at the airport, and she left.” That should do it. If her family came bitching and moaning, Raik wouldn’t have a clue of what really happened.

Raik couldn’t understand what was happening. What the fuck was happening? Katie was dead and Remzi was walking around the room like everything was okay. He was seeing a side of Remzi that he never thought he would. The side that Dominic was talking about. The side that managed to get everyone's skin. But it was worse. His nightmares had come true. For so long now he’d been worried his brother would do something tragic, something he’d regret. Raik believed all this when Remzi was a human, following those reckless thoughts that entered his head before realised afterwards how stupid he’d been, only to do it all again the following weekend. Raik had lost the battle. He failed in keeping Remzi from ruining himself. The boys had stupid little play fights when they were younger, usually with Remzi taking it too far and throwing Raik over the couch or something, but in that moment Raik was swinging at Remzi with hate fuelling his punch. He intended to hurt his brother, but it was never going to match the hurt he was feeling. There was a tightness in his chest, a sob that was trying to force its way out as he looked back at Remzi. His brother. The one he shared his birthday with. The one used to beat up the other kids for being mean to Raik. The one who promised he didn’t kill that human when they arrived in Mystic Falls. He’d been so blinded by his love for Remzi that he couldn’t see past the lies that were coming out of his sibling’s mouth. Maybe he’d been in denial, telling himself that Remzi wasn’t capable of killing someone. There was no way his younger brother could take someone's life. Raik tried to tug away from Remzi’s grip, but it was too strong. For a second he thought he was next. His body tossed to the floor alongside Katie’s, but those teeth remained blunt as his brother started to speak to him, but the words didn’t have any effect. Instantly Raik realised what his brother was doing, “Seni sikerim” He launched both hands into Remzi’s chest, pushing him hard, “Seni sikerim!” He took a step back from Remzi, fresh tears now welling in his eyes, “I hate you” Words he’d never uttered to Remzi before in his life. He turned away from Remzi, quickly pushing the tears from his face as he grabbed his coat from near the door. Raik quickly zipped it up before opening the door and leaving. REMZI DURMAZ
